Italy Fit for the Future
The Green European Foundation organised with support of the Italian NGO coalition Sbilanciamoci! a conference looking at various Green proposals for overcoming the current sovereign debt crisis.

The conference took place as planned with the title L'Italia capace di futuro - Un'economia verde per uscire dalla crisi - Proposte per l'oggi e per la prossima legislatura. The overlapping, on that very day, of the presentation by the new Italian Government of its first economic decisions to Parliament lead to some of the Party representatives not being able to attend or send substitutes. Radio radicale broadcast the whole event nationwide, both audio and visually.

The speakers

All civil society organisations which had confirmed their participation did attend, including the heads of Italy's largest environmental NGOs, trade union leaders and two senior Confindustria - Italy's industrial companies umbrella organisations - officers. Several high ranking politicians gave inputs as well: the Italian Greens President, the Radical Party national secretary, the two members responsible for econmic policies and green economy within the Democratic Party's national leadership.

The Italian head of state, Giorgio Napolitano, sent a message to the participants calling for greener growth policies in the current difficult crisis.

The participants

Over 150 people attended, from Sbilancamoci!'s member organisations, Green economy companies, various government departments, universities and political parties.

The contents

The event discussed ten sets of proposals for the Italian and European economies to overcome the crisis prepared by Sbilanciamoci!,  as well as the European Green Party's Paris declaration - A Way out of the crisis in Europe.
