ECOPRO (Ecological Production in a Post-Growth Society) is an ongoing transitional project that started in 2015. With this project, we aim to structurally nourish the discussion on a post-growth society, by exploring different pathways for development, which can contribute to a profound transition towards social-ecological production.

With this project, we provide new perspectives on the future of production and consumption based on sustainability and fairness. Growing inequality and structural unemployment in the EU, along with the transgression of the planetary boundaries, show that the growth-based economy is no longer a feasible development path for the contemporary society. Therefore, we look here for alternative solutions as a part of the big move to go beyond growth.

In 2015, ECOPRO explored pathways towards ecological production as part of a sustainable economy that enables low-carbon and fosters social equality. A framing paper from 2015 is still available in EnglishSpanish and French, along with the Green European Journal article that explains the ideas behind the ECOPRO project last year.

In 2016, the central theme of the project was “Sustainable Work for All in a Post-Growth Society“. It aimed to sustain and enrich the Green narrative on a post-growth economy and the role of work within it, with special emphasis on “work of the future” (sustainable jobs) and “working beyond the job” (as more than paid work). Moreover, the project sought to stimulate debates around feminist, care and gender divisions within the labour-perspective.

The participants of the project were eight national Green foundations from different regions and Member States of the European Union — Austria, Spain (Catalonia), Croatia, Belgium, United Kingdom, Hungary and Ireland.

In the framework of the ECOPRO project, a series of Framing Papers have been produced, outlining the focus on sustainable work in a post-growth society. The paper from Oikos (Belgium) is available for download in English and the paper written by Beate Littig for Grüne Werkstattschriften (Grüne Bildungswerkstatt, Austria) is available for download in English and German!
