Green Economic Conference in Istanbul: Can Degrowth be a Solution?

Istanbul hosted another event on Saturday, December 19th, as part of a series of economic conferences organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of the Green Thought Association.

The Green Economy Conference was at its 6th edition this year and discussed the deficiencies of the existing global economic system. The seminar provided degrowth proposals as answers the challenges that humanity faces today, which were followed by proposals of a transition towards degrowth.

Humanity is now at an important juncture, given the challenges brought to surface by the Triple Crisis of 2008. Today, we are consuming 50% more of what our nature’s yearly biocapacity can supply. We reached and are even going beyond the planetary limits.

Is it possible to continue with the business-as-usual scenario in which economic growth has been put as a panacea for problems ranging from poverty, rising inequality and environmental degradation? Or should we really start to question the idea of endless economic growth?
