FACE OF POPULISM

How can we avoid falling into the evils of identity-based retaliation and into a scenario of repression and regression of rights? How do we protect political ecology from these deviations and work to reassert the democratic ideal in the face of populism?

The first Political Ecology Meetings should have started on Thursday, March 12.

In view of the evolution of the spread of the Covid19 coronavirus in Belgium, public health experts and the authorities recommend the cancellation of the gatherings of (more than 1000 people).

1,400 people are expected to participate, in one way or another, in this edition of the Rencontres de l’Ecologie politique, showing their interest in an exceptional program.

Despite the uncertainties about the extent of the risk and the recommendations to be applied, we believe that our fair responsibility is to take part in measures to prevent the spread of the virus as much as possible.

We therefore took the difficult decision to postpone the Political Ecology Meetings in the same place (BEL Brussels, Tour & Taxis site) from 23 to 25 October this year.

Additional information will follow shortly.

About the event

Identity permeates many contemporary debates in Europe. With national – populism, the temptation to withdraw into oneself and incite hatred endangers the functioning of our democracies. Moreover, disillusionment with politics is spreading in many quarters and is not sparing movements engaged in environmental struggles either. The left is hardly immune to these populist temptations, the political results of which, however, are often negative.

The plenary session is part of the Political Ecology Days, organised in collaboration with Etopia and will feature Justine Lacroix, Florent Marcellesi (ES), and Sherilyn MacGregor (EN). Moderated by Michel Genet.
