SUMMARY:4eme Rencontres de Cluny (Cluny)
DESCRIPTION:As ecological urgency grows and political support for the green transition comes under increasing pressure\, what space remains for ecology in Europe? At the 2026 Rencontres des pensées de l’écologie in Cluny\, GEF brings together political\, academic and civil society voices to explore how Green and democratic forces can confront the far right and put ecology back at the heart of Europe’s political future. \nAbout the event\nLes Rencontres des pensées de l’écologie return to Cluny from 13–15 November 2026\, bringing together researchers\, political representatives\, activists and practitioners to confront some of the key debates and divisions shaping ecological thought and explore the foundations for a shared ecological project. Since their creation in 2022\, the Rencontres have sought to move beyond traditional silos\, creating a space for dialogue on the political\, social and economic transformations needed to build ecologically sustainable and socially just societies.  \nAs part of the 2026 edition\, the Green European Foundation will contribute to two European discussions on Friday 13 November. The first\, 2026\, annus horribilis pour l’écologie?\, will examine the place of ecological issues in recent electoral choices and the apparent gap between the urgency of the climate crisis and its political salience\, bringing together perspectives from France and Belgium. Later that evening\, L’Europe bascule-t-elle inexorablement vers les réactionnaires? will broaden the conversation to Europe\, exploring how democratic and ecological forces can respond to the rise of the far right and build credible pathways towards ecological and social transformation. SUMMARY:GEF Event on Data Centers (Belgrade)
DESCRIPTION:Behind every digital service\, AI system and cloud platform lies a physical infrastructure that consumes energy\, water and land. As data centres expand across Europe and the Western Balkans\, who benefits from this digital transformation\, who bears its environmental and social costs\, and who gets to decide?\nAbout the event\nEurope’s digital transformation is accelerating\, bringing with it a growing demand for data centres and the infrastructure needed to power AI\, cloud computing and other digital services. While these developments are often presented as essential for technological progress and economic growth\, they also raise urgent questions about environmental sustainability\, resource consumption\, democratic accountability and digital rights. \nAcross Europe\, communities and civil society organisations are questioning how these projects are planned\, regulated and governed\, and whether their benefits outweigh their environmental and social costs. These debates are becoming increasingly relevant in Serbia and the wider Western Balkans\, where questions of water protection\, natural resources and environmental justice have long been at the centre of public mobilisation. As plans for new data centres emerge across the region\, there is an opportunity to connect these local concerns with wider European discussions on the future of digital infrastructure. \nOn Monday 23 November 2026\, the Green European Foundation will organise a day of discussions in Belgrade building on those themes. Bringing together European experts\, researchers\, environmental organisations and civil society actors\, the event will unpack the growing debate around data centres\, starting from the fundamentals of how they work and exploring their implications for environmental protection\, European regulation\, digital rights and democracy. \nHow can European policies ensure that digital development respects environmental limits and fundamental rights? What can we learn from communities already confronting the expansion of data centres? SUMMARY:Who Is the City For? Rethinking Mobility\, Care and Public Space (Lisbon)
DESCRIPTION:What changes when we design a city around the people who live in it? From the journey to school to the safety of a public square\, everyday experiences reveal whose needs our streets serve and whose they overlook. Join us in Lisbon to explore how cities can make more space for care\, connection and shared public life. \nAbout the event\nCities are places where we work and consume\, but also where we raise children\, care for relatives\, meet our neighbours and go about our daily lives. Yet urban planning often gives greater priority to cars and economic activity than to these everyday needs.. Women\, children\, older people and others who rely on accessible\, safe public spaces are the first to feel the consequences.  \nOn Saturday 28 November 2026\, the Green European Foundation\, in collaboration with Instituto José Tengarrinha\, brings together experts\, local councillors\, civil society actors and urban practitioners in Lisbon to ask what a more welcoming and livable city looks like in practice. Drawing on European experiences from Portugal and Spain to Croatia and Belgium\, the event will foster transnational exchange on feminist urbanism\, mobility and the design of public spaces.  \nCombining discussions with hands-on workshops\, the day will invite participants to develop a vision for their own cities and explore how to work with diverse communities and stakeholders for transformative urban policies and thinking.
