SUMMARY:Just Transition Essay Competition
DESCRIPTION:Context\nThe competition coincides with the publication of our new book\, ‘A European Just Transition for a Better World’\, a collection of chapters revolving aorund the transformation from an extractive economy to a regenerative one in a just and equitable way. As described by Dirk Holemans\, co-President of the Green European Foundation and the book’s editor\, the just transition marks “the meeting of necessity and ethics“. \n  \nAbout the Competition\nEntries should engage with this collection\, referencing chapters and applying the concepts\, history and political analysis it develops to the political economy of the UK (a free e-book will be shared on request). While the proposed essay can be academic or persuasive in style\, it should be rigorous in its argumentation and references. It may make use of previously submitted (but unpublished) work. Entrants do not need to have\, or be in tertiary education\, and we welcome entries that can engage personally as well as conceptually with the subject (for example\, those written from the perspective of workers\, organisers and activists). \nThe winner’s essay will be published in print and promoted by the Green European Foundation and Green House ahead of the UK book launch event\, which the winner will be offered travel expenses to attend. The event will take place on 20th September at Bookmarks bookshop in Bloomsbury\, London\, chaired by former Green Party leader Natalie Bennett. \nEssays are encouraged to take a broad interpretation of the subject\, and to provide an overview across different themes\, which could include: \n\nJust transition in the context of the cost-of-living crisis\, rising labour agitation and lower growth futures (see for example this webinar)\, and how these factors could impact the political and policy landscape.\nThe electoral appeal of just transition-related policies and agendas (Green New Deal\, Green Industrial Revolution) with reference to recent UK national and regional elections.\nDevolved nation initiatives around the just transition\, referencing recent progress in Scotland\, Wales and Northern Ireland.\nThe role of ‘place-based just transitions’: local and democratic engagement in planning through e.g. Local Authorities and Citizens’ Assemblies (e.g. Bristol).\nCritical perspectives on the just transition\, for example on the strategic role of the labour movement in the ecological transition relative to youth (e.g.\nThe Hidden Pitfalls of the “Just Transition”). \n\nThe role of sectoral transition plans (e.g. energy\, manufacturing\, transport\, advertising) versus economy-wide planning and policies.\n\n\nInterested?\n\nContact info@greenhousethinktank.org to confirm your interest and eligibility\, and to receive the e-book of A European Just Transition for a Better World.\nPrepare a 300-word pitch on the political potential of the concept of a just transition in the UK. The pitch should make clear its interactions with the book and the proposed scope and style of the essay.\nProvide an example of previous writing– academic or otherwise – on a related topic (e.g. climate crisis\, labour movement\, political economy)\, around 1\,500-3\,000 words in length.\nSend your pitch and previous writing to info@greenhousethinktank.org by midnight on Sunday 24th July.\nThe winner will be notified by 28July and asked to submit a 2\,500-word essay by 21st August. Runners-up will also be invited to submit full-length essays for publication by Green House.\nThe winner will receive prize of £500 upon publication; have their essay designed and published by the Green European Foundation and Green House; and receive travel expenses to attend the UK launch of ‘A European Just Transition for a Better World’ in London on 20th September.\n\nPracticalities\nEntrants should be under the age of 30 or in full-time education at undergraduate or masters degree level. Please note that the Green European Foundation and Green House will retain the editorial control of all publications. \n  \n\nThis contest is run by the Green European Foundation with the support of Green House think tank and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. The European Parliament is not responsible for the content of this contest.

SUMMARY:Eco-innovations for Green Economic Change & Shared Prosperity
DESCRIPTION:Context\nEU policies and strategic documents\, such as Europe 2020\, the EU Energy Roadmap 2050\, EU Climate Adaptation Strategy\, outline approaches to renewable energy and Green and circular economy in order to end the overuse of resources and the social inequality and mitigate climate change. But how do they apply to post-socialist member states and candidates countries in South Eastern Europe? How can eco-innovations contribute to a lasting change of economy and society at large? What are the drawbacks and challenges of Green economy that we need to deal with\, to make sure it brings shared prosperity and environmentally sustainable development for everyone? And how can politicians\, activists and business communicate effectively\, to take society at large on board of the transformation to green economy? \nConference\nResearchers\, policy analysts and practitioners are invited to propose papers in response to these\, and related questions\, for the conference ‘Eco-innovations for Green Economic Change and Shared Prosperity in Bulgaria\, Macedonia and Serbia’ on November 9 – 10\, 2017. \nThe conference is part of the ongoing project “Revision the Economy in the Balkans: Change Policy not Climate” project by the Green European Foundation\, organised with the support of the BlueLink Foundation Bulgaria\, Networked Serbia and the Sunrise Association for Sustainable Social and Economic Development Sunrise from Macedonia. The project aims to foster economy transformation towards environmental\, low-carbon and energy efficient reduction\, along with increasing prosperity and equity in society. \nA comparative study of the policy landscapes in Bulgaria\, Macedonia and Serbia\, practical and political recommendations to achieving equitable Green economy in the three countries will be presented and discussed at the conference. The event will respond to one of the priorities of Bulgaria’s forthcoming presidency of the EU in 2018: eco-innovations as a driver for economic progress. How can they work for achieving shared prosperity and democratisation of the society? \nCall for papers\nWe welcome submissions of research papers\, position papers\, investigation presentations\, or multimedia/film presentations. Abstracts can be submitted by Sunday\, October 8\, 2017 via email to office@bluelink.net. Find all the guidelines for submitting your abstract in this brief guide. \nParticipation\nNo participation fees will be charged for this conference. The working language will be English. In case you have any questions\, please contact the Bluelink team by sending an email to office@bluelink.net.
