SUMMARY:GEF Green Horizons Academy - Good for Nature (Belgrade)
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nThe GEF Green Horizons Academy (GHA) is an annual space for discussion and idea development around the future of environmental and social policies in Europe. This year’s edition\, Good for Nature\, will focus on advocating for strong biodiversity protection policies and empowering civic engagement in environmental efforts.  \nIn 2025\, nature protection activists and green minded individuals in general face mounting challenges. The EU’s Biodiversity Strategy 2030 is under pressure\, environmental laws are threatened by corporate lobbying\, and civic movements face increasing repression amid a growing trend of authoritarianism. Meanwhile\, in Serbia and across the Balkans\, local movements struggle to protect ecosystems from extractivist industries\, such as lithium mining and hydropower projects. In this context\, GHA: Good for Nature will bring together civil society representatives\, grassroots activists\, EU policy experts\, and decision-makers to strategize and build knowledge on defending nature and strengthening environmental democracy.  \nThe two-day conference will feature a public panel debate\, a field trip to explore local environmental challenges\, workshops\, and networking opportunities.  \nProject Background\nGEF GHA: Good for Nature is part of the Green European Foundation’s broader mission to promote a sustainable and socially just future. This year’s edition follows the 2024 discussions on extractivism and the European Green Deal’s external impacts\, shifting the focus toward biodiversity and nature restoration as central pillars of Europe’s green transition\, as well as avoiding the clashes that can happen between the fight for biodiversity and the development of sustainable energies.  \nProgramme\n\nDAY 1: PUBLIC EVENT – no pre-registration needed\n16:00 Arrival of the participants and public\n17:00 Panel 1:  Biodiversity and consistency in EU policies \n\nIgor Kalaba – Center for Environment\, (Bosnia and Herzegovina)\nBelma Šestović – Wildlife Montenegro\nNataša Đereg – National Convention on European Union in Serbia (NCEU)\nVanja Jakšić – WWF Adria (Belgrade)\n\nModerator: Žaklina Živković\, Polekol \n18:30 Panel 2: Ecosystems\, local communities and decarbonisation \n\nIvan Milosavljević – Rangers of East Serbia\nAleksandar Dragićević – Eco activist\, Montenegro\nMilja Vuković – Blue and Green initiative\nAndrey Ralev – Bankwatch SEE\nMarko Mirč – Institute for Biological Research “Siniša Stanković”\n\nModerator: Iva Marković\, Polekol \n20:00 Dinner for the participants and speakers – at the venue \nDAY 2: CLOSED DOOR – only selected applicant\n09:00 Workshop 1: Sandra Jovanović – Biodiversity Expert – EU policies for the people!\n10:30 Workshop 2: Discussions around case studies with the participants and lessons learned from the day before’s panel discussions\n12:00 Field trip to Bara Reva\, Lunch\n14:00 Ana Džakić\, NGO Bela Čaplja (White Heron) – Presentation about the local struggle\, Networking opportunities\n18:00 Trip back to Belgrade\n19:00 Dinner & Goodbyes \n\n\n\nPracticalities\nDate: 28-29 March 2025\nLocation: Belgrade\, Serbia / online live retransmission on our partner’s instagram channel\nVenue: KC Grad\, Braće Krsmanović 4\, Belgrade\, Serbia\nLanguage: English\nCosts coverage: We will provide catering during the event and cover any travel costs within Serbia. SUMMARY:EGAT Czech Republic (Akumulátor): '23-'24 edition
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nSign up for Accumulator and become one of 15 young activists! You don’t need a CV full of experience. What’s important is the motivation to change things around you .During this programme\, you will explore different aspects of politics and activism with experts in green issues\, including journalists\, academics\, experts\, and politicians. We will awake your sense of initiative and support your skills in advocacy\, teamwork\, campaigning\, and work with the media. Together we will go through a whole range of approaches and tools that will help participants do their bit to change the world for the better. It is important for us to connect theory and practice. Besides practical skills\, we will focus on important cross-cutting themes such as climate change\, education\, feminism and more. \nIn addition\, you will become a member of a wide alumni network\, which includes all former participants who today are often engaged in activism\, politics and other exciting projects. Together we organize a big alumni weekend every summer where we get together to share our experiences. \nWe are starting this year’s Accumulator with a weekend at the end of October 2023\, in the spring of 2024 we will meet in Brussels with young people from Finland\, Lithuania\, Latvia\, Spain\, Poland and Croatia who are delving into similar programmes as the Accumulator. \n  \nParticipation Requirements\n\nYou are between 18 – 24 years (recommended)\nYou live in the Czech Republic (but you do not have to have permanent residence in the Czech Republic or Czech citizenship)\nYou are willing to be proactive and participative\nYou have to participate in ALL phases of the training: please check details below.\n\nIf there is any obstacle (for example financial\, or regarding health or language) that could prevent you from participating in the project\, let us know and we will adjust the program and conditions so that you can still participate. The accumulator is an open and inclusive space and all young people are welcome to apply despite their background. \nApply HERE by August 27! \n  \nCost\nOur goal is that all selected applicants are able to participate in the Accumulator\, regardless of financial possibilities. Nevertheless\, we ask for a solidarity fee to be able to fund all the activities. Please consider what your personal financial contribution possibilities are for the realization of the Accumulator. You can let us know the amount of your contribution when filling out the application form HERE. Please note that the amount of the contribution you are able to provide won’t influence the selection process. \n  \nProgram\nThe EGAT Akumulator consists of two weekend trainings and separate preparation for these trainings. It also includes a one-week study trip to Brussels\, which is preceded by the EU for Beginners e-learning course and a preparatory meeting that will take place over a day the week before the visit to Brussels. \n1. Accumulator\, 20 – 22 October 2023\, Veronici Centre\, Hoštětín \nSYSTEM ERROR: How to change it?\nDuring the first weekend\, we will get to know each other and decide how we want the entire Accumulator to work together. We will share our expectations\, fears\, experiences\, and motivations. In short\, we will try to create a safe environment for everyone to feel good and positive about the training.\nWe refer to the time in which we live in different ways. However\, the common denominator is often the word “crisis”. We are talking about a climate\, economic\, global\, energy crisis\, but also a crisis of imagination. During the first weekend training\, we will cover a little bit of all of the above. Through formal and non-formal education methods\, we will try to think together about how individual crises are related to each other and try to examine problems at system level. \nWith a focus on deepening the ability to think systemically\, we will try to understand the basic concepts that we will work with during the following weekends. We will talk\, for example\, about capitalism\, but also globalization and colonialism. \nAt the end of the weekend\, we should have a unified level of knowledge\, clarified shared values and a deepened ability to think systems. \n2. Accumulator\, November 24-26\, 2023\, ČSOP Hostel\, Vlašim \nENVIRONMENTAL MOVEMENT: From where and where? \nFrom theory to practice. First\, we will clarify the theoretical roots of political ecology\, then we dive into activist political practice. Who are the green actors? What and who is involved in the environmental movement? How to become part of the change? We will solve all this during the second weekend together with specific actors from environmental organizations and platforms\, for example Greenpeace\, Fridays for Future or Re-set. In addition to activism\, we will also explore the waters of politics with members of three political parties – Pirates\, Greens and Future. \nFinally\, we will focus on creating campaigns. What to watch out for? What is the good practice of well-known environmental organizations? \n3. Preparation for a study stay in Brussels\, March 2024\, one day (online or offline) \nThe main topic of the third weekend will be the European Union. The Impact Europe e-learning course will allow us not to have to deal with how the EU works all weekend\, and we can then go straight to a critical discussion about its pros and cons and the relationship between its policies and the policies of the Czech Republic. We will talk about how political processes at the national and European level can be realistically influenced. At this meeting\, which will take place online or offline\, we will share practical information about the study trip to Brussels. At the same time\, we will open here some of the topics that are dealt with at the European level by experts\, MEPs and activists that we will meet in Brussels. \n4. (BST – Brussels Study Trip) Study stay in Brussels\, spring 2024 \nEUROPEAN GREEN ACTIVIST’S TRAINING – EGAT \nAccumulator takes place in various forms simultaneously in Finland\, Croatia\, Spain\, the Czech Republic\, Poland\, Lithuania and Latvia. Participants from these countries will meet for a one-week excursion in Brussels to share knowledge from individual trainings and take a look behind the scenes at the activities of the institutions of the European Union. We will visit the European Parliament and meet people who work in various positions in Brussels. Even with several members of the European Parliament. \nBut Brussels is not only about the EU\, and we will have the chance to learn about local initiatives and how grassroots activism is done in a place where European politics intersects with Belgian politics. \n  \nWho will train me and how?\nNon-formal education lecturers Zuzana Kašparová and Miriam Macurová will guide you through the training and excursion to Brussels. Both have been active in the field of alternative education for several years and educate young people to take an active approach to public affairs. They themselves are socially engaged in the topics that will be discussed at the trainings. Both were members of the non-profit educational organization Be International. Zuzana is dedicated to the feminist project Vyhonit dábla\, she is the author of the program “Na zachodce” for CT\, she is involved in the activist crip collective and lectures on a freelance basis\, for example sex education or intercultural competence. Miriam works as a campaigner and expert on European climate policy at Greenpeace\, where she is also part of the environmental education program. The program is thus created on the basis of real experiences from the public space. \nThe program itself is based on meetings with people from practice\, i.e. politicians\, journalists\, experts and activists\, who will introduce the participants to politics and public events based on their experience. \nIn addition to workshops and guest lectures\, the program is based on informal education. His methods are based on working in groups with an emphasis on individual initiative. So what you get from the Accumulator depends on how much you put into the training. An important part of the educational process is the sharing of experiences and reflection. \nIn informal education\, they learn by experiencing and trying new things\, which not only leads to new information\, but also to the acquisition of practical skills and thinking about values. It is not graded\, it does not know the role of the teacher\, it is voluntary and the participants are themselves responsible for what they learn. \nDeveloping the ability to work in a group is essential for the Accumulator. Although everyone takes away newly acquired skills and knowledge\, we believe that the ability to collaborate collectively is crucial when trying to change the world around us and when involving other people in future activities. \n  \n\nThis EGAT programme is organised by Green European Foundation with the support of Institute of Active Citizenship and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. \n

DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThe youth organization “Protests” in cooperation with the Freedom and Solidarity Fund announces applications for the summer camp “Young Activists Academy” or JAA! It will be a great opportunity for young people to get inspired and prepare for active participation in civil society. \nThe camp will be held on 25-27 in August near Kandava\, Latvia. It is organized as a part of “European Green Activists Training – Latvia”. “Young Activists Academy” will be a 3-day camp\, during which we will introduce young people with little or no activism experience to various NGOs and movements\, such as the Green Movement\, as well as inspire them to actively participate in civil society. We will identify local problems and find ways how we can solve them and become heard at the political level as well. We will learn how the European Union and its institutions work and how you\, as an individual\, can be heard in it. We will identify  the threats to European democracy and how we can prevent them while also promoting an inclusive\, feminist and green society. \nProject “JAA” is organized by the “Freedom and Solidarity Fund” in cooperation with the youth organization “Protests”. The project is funded by the Green European Foundation through the “European Green Activists training” project. \n  \nWho can apply?\nWe are looking for young people between the ages of 15 and 30 who speak and understand the Latvian language. We will give preference to younger young people from the regions of Latvia and/or with less experience of activism\, but we invite everyone who is interested in the topics raised to apply. \n  \nPractical information\n  \nThe camp will be held in Latvian. \nThere is no fee to participate. SUMMARY:How to protect a Post-Growth Europe? (Sofia)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nGreen policies that respect planetary boundaries and allow the Global South to develop seem incompatible with unlimited economic growth in the EU. We need a realistic scenario for a future in which we consume more sparingly but live better together\, a scenario that concepts of degrowth and post-growth can offer. \nThe war in Ukraine completely changed the global landscape. Today\, the idea of ending GDP growth in the EU encounters new and important geopolitical impediments with power and wealth being measured in military capacity. Can a degrowth Europe build strength and resilience in this context? \nTo tackle this issue\, the Green European Foundation is organising a series of expert meetings across Europe\, including the present one with the support of BlueLink in Bulgaria. Outcomes from these expert meetings and further research and interviews will feed into a final publication to be launched in autumn 2023. \nWe invite Bulgarian researchers\, activists and policy makers with an interest in green policies and geopolitics to present papers and/or engage in an analytical discussion defined by the following analytical framework: \n\nWhat are the tensions and synergies between managed degrowth within the EU and the EU’s ability to achieve its geopolitical objectives\, such as promoting security in a broad sense?\nCan tension be mitigated? If so\, how?\nHow would it be possible to optimize the possibilities that degrowth offer?\n\nNot every question has a definitive answer and we promote creativity\, analytical thinking and fresh approaches to the challenge. \nProject background\nThis event is part of GEF’s Geopolitics of Post-Growth project\, which explores the tensions between degrowth/post-growth and geopolitics. The project aims to ignite a conversation between critics of economic growth and progressive thinkers on foreign and security policy\, who now often operate in separate circuits. It aims to find solutions beyond naïve anti-militarism and convenient belief in green growth.  \nSpeakers and Programme \nFurther details to be announced.  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: April 28th\, 14:00 – 17:00 CET \nLocation: House of Europe – 124\, 1000 Sofia Center\, Sofia\, Bulgaria \nLanguage:  The seminar will be held in Bulgarian\, but presentations in English are acceptable. \nRegistration: Researchers\, experts\, activists or politicians wishing to join the discussion with academic or conceptual contributions\, opinions and opinions\, or as discussants on the subject\, are invited to register for participation via this link. Only registered participants will be admitted to the event. \nIf you have any further questions or wish to discuss your potential contribution\, please reach Pavel Antonov\, PhD at tel. 0888 704 661 or by e-mail at office@bluelink.net.  \n  \n\nThis expert seminar is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of BlueLink and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. SUMMARY:Call for Participants: Green Horizons Academy
DESCRIPTION:About the Call\nThe Green European Foundation and the Organisation for Political Ecology POLEKOL are launching a call for participants for the first Green Horizons Academy\, under the title “The Good Story.”   \nWe are looking for participants that are active in environmental movements\, civic initiatives\, academic institutions and/or political organizations with green policy agenda. This three-day event will give you the opportunity to:  \n\nLearn about political ecology and the green political idea in Europe \nPut forward ways to bring the green agenda into practice in South-East Europe  \n\n\nImprove your green values communication skills \nCreate an affirmative green narrative on sustainability\, alternative to the populist one \nNetwork with potential green-minded allies \n\nContext\nThe Green Horizons Academy is an educational programme that aims to expand the imaginary of the broad green movement towards the alternative liveable future across Europe. Addressing the climate crisis and environmental issues is a home ground for the greens. Still\, we need to prepare for the forthcoming battles of narratives\, especially at a time where everyone is “playing the green card”. \nPopulists and conservative authoritarians\, especially in countries with a weak green opposition\, are casting a long shadow over social movements and appropriating environmentalism. Europe’s narrative of openness and solidarity has been put to the test amid the pandemic. The Academy is a space for theory and practice that can serve both for political actors to step into closer communication with the people\, and for citizens to politicize the growing environmental struggles. \nThis year’s Green Horizons Academy’s main topic is building a successful narrative around green values that resonates with the broad public\, therefore its title – THE GOOD STORY. \nDuring three days of lectures\, debates\, and workshops\, we hope to inspire European green actors and raise the capacities of citizens from South-East Europe in their approach to presenting green values and agenda. GHA will also examine the resilience of the existing Green political organisations in the region and offer the space for authentic policy debates designed for and from the region. The time has come for green-minded actors to create a cultural uprising\, painting our views as possible\, tangible\, and popular! From the academic field of political theory to the environmental activists and new movements\, the Green Horizons Academy will present\, discuss\, and articulate democratic\, feminist\, sustainable and just alternatives. \nPracticalities\nThe Green Horizons Academy will take place in Belgrade\, Serbia from 15-17 October. The language of the event is BCS and English\, and translation will be provided.   \nPlease apply by filling out this online form. The application deadline is Monday\, October 4th. If you have any questions\, please send an email to organizacija.polekol@gmail.com.  \nAll applicants will be informed about the selection results by October 6th.  \nAs we are still in the middle of the pandemic\, as a safety precaution\, all participants will be Covid tested at the spot\, right before the event starts.   \nThe programme will be held in a hybrid model\, where selected participants are in the physical space\, and evening sessions are live streamed for the public.  \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation\, with the support of PolEkol and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.
