SUMMARY:Tourism in Times of Climate and Social Crisis (Barcelona)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nFrom the COVID-19 pandemic to the war in Ukraine\, inflation to the energy crisis – the tourism sector has been dealt many blows in the past few years. At the same time\, mass tourism is itself implicated in several of our biggest challenges today: carbon emissions\, housing shortages\, crumbling infrastructure\, poor working conditions\, and the list goes on. As we look to transforming our economies and societies\, the green and just transition of tourism is a crucial element.     \nIn this half-day conference\, we will tackle the question of tourism around three dimensions: mobility and infrastructure\, labour and public services\, and climate and environment. With experts\, academics\, trade unionists and politicians\, we look forward to lively and thought-provoking exchanges.    \n\n  \nContext\nThis event is part of GEF’s Fair and Carbon Free Tourism project\, which aims to identify and create conditions for collective action against detrimental social and environmental impacts of tourism. By engaging stakeholders in partner countries and developing a European transnational discussion on these challenges\, we seek to build a community interested to transform this sector in the direction of low or zero carbon intensity and with a specific focus on social and economic justice.  \n\n  \nSpeakers\nAurora Pedro Bueno – Director of the New Green Transition in Tourism department\, University of Valencia  \nDeborah Pérez – trade unionist at MagmaCultura  \nJavier Pacheco – General Secretary of CCOO Catalunya  \nJosé Antonio Donaire – Tourism research institute of the University of Girona  \nPau Noy – President of the Foundation for Sustainable and Safe Mobility  \nSergi Alegre – Fundacio Nous Horitzons  \nTilly Metz – Greens/EFA MEP and member of the Committee on Transport and Tourism [tbc]   \nVictor Català – former Blanes City councillor   \n\n  \nProgramme\n10:00 Welcome and Introduction – with Javier Pacheco and Sergi Alegre  \n10:30 Tourism\, Mobility\, and Territorial Balance – with José Antonio Donaire and Pau Noy  \n11:30 Break  \n12:00 Tourism\, Public Services\, and Working Conditions – with Deborah Pérez and Victor Català  \n13:00 Tourism in a Climate Crisis Context – with Aurora Pedro Bueno and Tilly Metz  \n  \nPracticalities\nDate and time: Saturday\, October 8th (9:30 – 14:00 CEST)  \nLocation: CCOO de Catalunya Assembly Space – Via Laietana 16\, Barcelona   \nLanguage: Catalan  \nRegistration: Pre-registration is not required\, but please arrive on time.   \n  \nRelated reading\nThe Case for Not Flying \n \nAnthropogenic Venice: Surviving Life in a Lagoon \n \nSteering Tourism to a Greener Course in Belgrade \n \nSeeing Mobility in a New Light \n \n  \n  \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Fundacio Nous Horitzons and the financial support of the European parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:The Future of Eastern Europe Conference (Riga)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nWe are pleased to announce the Conference on the Future of Eastern Europe organized on 6-7 June in Riga\, Latvia. The conference will be organised by GEF with the support of Cooperation Development Networks Eastern Europe (CDNEE)\, Green Thought Association (Turkey)\, Sustainable Development Forum Green Window (Croatia)\, Green Institute (Greece) and Ecopolis Foundation (Hungary). The Conference aims to unite the voices of young green activists from Eastern Europe to talk about the future of the region\, and the challenges and opportunities for an ecological and progressive turnaround. \nContext\nThis is the first event as part of our 2022 Transnational Project The Future of Eastern Europe and Ecodemocracy. Democracy in Eastern Europe is hanging by a thread. Authoritarianism is growing and nationalist narratives are reopening old conflicts. The Pandemic has exposed governments’ inefficiencies to react to any sort of crisis and contributed to heighten polarisation in an already polarised society. On the other side\, hope is on the horizon as progressive movements are taking over power at the local level\, as well as at the rapidly growing mobilisation of public around environmental issues. How could we leverage these small steps and use them to strengthen the Green movement in the region? \n\nProgramme\n\nDAY 1 – (6th June) Monday\n10:00-10:15 Opening of the conference (Live Stream)\n\n\n\n\n10:15-12:00 Eastern Europe as a region – a story of turbulent transformation (Live Stream)\n\nDescription:  For more than thirty years Eastern Europe is a region of independent nation-states. During this period there was the promise that after a long struggle democracy and well-being would be achieved. Looking at it today\, it is clear that most Eastern European countries are far from democracy and the well-being of citizens.\nIn this session\, we will try to analyse and reflect on the last decades of Eastern Europe\, mainly focusing to find the roots of current problems and possible solutions by looking back at the recent history – what shaped the region\, how the democratisation and transition took place.\n\n\n\nSpeakers: \nSonja Schiffers\, Director of Heinrich-Boell Foundation\, South Caucasus Office\nAnastasiya Dorofeeva\, Belarusian Green party\, Belarusian anti-nuclear campaign\, hub “Green foundations”\n\n\n\nModerator: Luka Gudek\, Green European Foundation\n\n\n\n12:00-13:30 Influence of Global Powers: Eastern Europe at the crossroads between democracy and autocracy (Live Stream)\n\nDescription: Discussing political dynamics and transformation of Eastern Europe cannot take place without paying attention to global powers and their involvement in the region. \nWith this session we aim to map global powers: EU – China\, Russia and US – and their interests; What role do they play in supporting democracy and progressive agenda or the opposite – encouraging and financing anti-democratic\, right-wing and authoritarian forces. \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\nAnton Cherepenko\, the Free Hong Kong Center in Kyiv\nZarina Burkadze\,  Associate Proffessor of Political Science\, Ilia State University \nRaluca Besliu\, Fundraising Manager\, Green European Foundation and contributor of the Green European Journal focusing on Eastern European affairs\nTeo Comet\, TILT Coordinator at European Greens\, Board Member at Green European Foundation \n\n\n\n\nModerator: Giorgi Ptskialadze\, Network Coordinator of CDN\n\n\n\n15:30-17:00 War in Ukraine: Context\, Present and the Effect on the region (Live Stream) \n\nDescription: Russian aggression against Ukraine is continuing. Every day we are witnessing atrocities\, war crimes and violations of international law from the Russian side\, at the same time Ukraine is bravely defending its people\, sovereignty\, democracy and even Europe as a whole.\nIn this session\, we will take a look at a few different aspects of the conflict: the context of the war\, the historical roots of Russian aggression\, the current events\, as well as what greens should do to help Ukraine\, and how the ongoing war affects countries in the region.\n\n\n\nFacilitator: Katya Andrieieva\, Executive Committee Member of CDN\n\n\n\n17:30-19:00 Energy – a veto point and/or a chance for democracy? (Live Stream)\n\nDescription: The energy we choose reflects the systems we support. In this session\, we will discuss energy as the core factor for sustaining authoritarian regimes and the way the energy sector influences political dynamics. As well as we are going to focus on the possibility of democratisation through energy – decentralisation\, renewables and the prospect of energy cooperatives in Eastern Europe. \n\n\n\nSpeakers:\n\n\nManana Kochladze\, Bankwatch Strategic Area Leader – Democratization and Human Rights\n \nYevheniia Zasiadko\, Head of climate and transport department at Ecoaction – Centre for Environmental Initiatives\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshop: Sandy-Kyriaki Fameliari\, ElectaEnergy Cooperative\n\n\n\n\nModerator: Lusine Kosakyn\, Executive Committee Member of CDN\n\n\n\n\nDAY 2 – (7th June) Tuesday\n\n\n10:00-11:30 Eco-Democracy as a new paradigm for Eastern Europe\n\nDescription: The Workshop aims to add a philosophical\, ethical and institutional dimension to the conversations on the Future of Eastern Europe happening at the Conference. It hopes to bring together the different voices and ideas from the wealth of participants and facilitate a meaningful discussion on how to put Ecology at the Centre of Democracy.\n\nHow can we make democracy more ecological? What kind of changes do we need to apply to our thinking about participation\, institutions and decision-making to put ecology and the environment at the forefront of our political systems? \n\nThese are some of the questions that we’ll be asking and trying to answer at our Ecodemocracy Workshop!                              \n\n\n\nFacilitators: Anna Maniadi and Dimitris Papageorgiou\, Green Institute Greece            \n\n\n\n12:00-13:30  Conflicts in Eastern Europe: the theory and beyond\n\nDescription: \nThe session aims to provide participants with the basis of conflict theory and conflict resolution and analyze the conflicts in EE through case studies.  The session encompasses theoretical and practical parts that will be conducted through non-formal education methods. The objectives of the session are 1)to understand the concept of conflict (origin\, causes\, consequences)\, 2) to discuss the mechanisms of handling conflict\, particularly\, conflict resolution\, and 3) to explore the conflicts that happened in EE in recent years\, their consequences and current state.\n\n\n\n15:30-17:00 Open Mic\n\n\n\n17:30-19:30 Movements into politics: Green Wave in Eastern Europe (Live Stream)\n\n\nDescription: For the last decades\, if you checked the electoral map of Europe intending to see how Green parties have been performing\, you would see a clear pattern: Greens in the west and north do well – they get elected in national and regional parliaments\, city councils\, win mayorships and even participate in governing coalitions; while in the east – you would see a grey colour representing either absence of Green parties from the political landscape or lack of support and therefore relevance. However\, in recent years the pattern is dissolving and becoming a blur\, the Green wave spreading to the East. \n\nDuring the panel\, we will discuss the ongoing Green wave with newly established Green political parties across Eastern Europe with the aim to analyse current success\, find the patterns and similarities\, understand the importance of grassroots movements and civil society\, map challenges\, envision the future and their influence on the political landscape.\n\n\n\nSpeakers:\nJustine Pantelejeva\, Progresīvie\, Latvia\nPredrag Momčilović\, Ne davimo Beograd\, Serbia\nSopo Shubitidze\, Mtsvaneebi\, Georgia\nMozemo Croatia TBC\nStefan Vukmanovic\, Ura Montenegro\nVesna TBC\nKoray Doğan Urbarlı\, Green Party Turkey\n\nPracticalities\nDate: 6-7th June \nTime Zone: Eastern European Summer Time (EEST) / Coordinated Universal\nTime (UTC) + 3 \nLocation: Rija VEF Hotel\, Brīvības 199c\, Riga\, Latvija\, LV-1039  \nFormat: Hybrid format (some sessions will be Livestreamed) \nLanguage: The main language of this activity will be English. But not being comfortable with interacting in English should not prevent you from applying. GEF & CDN strives to create an inclusive atmosphere at the events\, where participants are encouraged to express themselves and ask for clarifications or translations from peers that speak the same language. \nCosts: Anyone is welcome to take part in the conference with their own expenses. There is no participation fee. \nIn addition\, CDN can cover the participation of a limited number of applications of young greens and activists from Eastern Europe (with a maximum age of 30). Meaning the cost of travel\, and lodging (accommodation in multi-bed rooms\, vegetarian/vegan food and refreshments). \nIn any case\, take into consideration choosing the most economic and environmentally friendly means of travel (lowest price + travel time + CO2 emissions) and in case the trip would take less than 15 hours only travelling by land (train+bus) is reimbursed (IRPs §9.1). \nDeadline: 20th of May (if applying for CDN to cover your participation.)\n \nYou will be informed by e-mail approximately 1 week after the deadline. Please add office@cdnee.org to your contacts\, so that you do not receive our reply in the spam folder. \nIf you have any questions\, do not hesitate to write us at office@cdnee.org \nRegistration: Registrations are now open!  \n\n\nAdditional Reading\nBulgaria’s Greens: From Street Protests to Government \nHow Green Independents Broke Through in North Macedonia \nExtraction and Energy Transition in Serbia \nCan Protests Steer Serbia Back Towards Democracy? \nThe War in Ukraine is Part of the Soviet Empire’s Unravelling \nThe Unfinished Business of Building Bosnia-Herzegovina \nThe Romanian Protest Wave: A Path to a New Political Era?\nBelarus’s Struggle for Democracy \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of CDNEE and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. SUMMARY:Women* in Power
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nThis international conference brings together speakers from all over Turkey and Europe to highlight commonalities and explore the solidarity and struggles of gender studies in green policy. It is the second edition of the conference\, and just like last year\, we aim to bring together activists\, politicians\, and academics to share their thoughts and build a stronger movement for gender and environmental justice. \nContext: \nIn October\, Turkey finally ratified the Paris Climate Agreement\, asserting its claim to be an important part of the global climate struggle. However\, in July its government left the Istanbul Convention against violence against women\, despite being one of the first signatories and in defiance of countless protests\, actions\, and calls throughout the year.\nThe usurpation of the rights of nature on one hand and gender-based violence\, discrimination\, and inequality on the other are crimes that occur every day in Turkey. But faced with worsening conditions\, the climate\, ecology\, women’s and LGBTQI+ movements have also started to grow. We witness their developing and spreading resistance against male domination\, which imposes itself as the only reality\, sees nature and people as resources and exploits them.\nGreen thought emphasizes the importance of combining climate and ecological struggles\, women and LGBTQI+ struggles\, for a better and liveable world where the rights of all people\, living things and nature are protected. We believe in the need to emerge and the globality of solidarity – issues with which this conference seeks to engage. The international conference forms the closing of a year-long project on centralising gender equality and feminist perspectives in green policies. \n\nProgramme and Speakers\n13:00 – 13:10 Opening  \n\nModeration: Bahar Topçu Board of Green Thought Association & Climate Activist \n\nSession 1: International Solidarity  \n\n13:15-13:30 Faika El-Nagashi – Austrian Greens Member of Parliament \n\n\n13:30-13:45 Anuna De Wever – Belgian climate activist  \n13:45-13:55 Q&A \n\nSession 2: Debates on Gender and Climate Justice  \n\n14:00-14:20 V’cenza Cirefice – Activist / Researcher\, Environmental Justice Network Ireland \n14:20-14:40 Özge Doruk Activist /Researcher – Report Presentation On the Issue of Climate Justice: Field Notes from Bozkurt\n14:40-15:00 Kristen Biehl & Özlem Aslan Researchers (Sabancı University SuGender) \n15:00-15:15 Q&A \n\n\nPracticalities: \nAudience: This conference will take place online and is open to the general public.  \nDate: Saturday\, 11 December (exact times to be announced)  \nLanguage: Turkish and English\, with simultaneous translation  \nRegistration: Please register in advance via this link.   \n  \n\nThis online conference is organised by the Green European Foundation\, with the support of Green Thought Association and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.  \n

SUMMARY:Feminists in the Climate Movement at the Green Hub
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nWomen and minorities are more likely to be affected by the consequences of climate change but are also the key people who can bring about change in their communities. Countries with more diversity in decision-making have more ambitious climate policies. But diversity doesn’t just magically happen  – it must be encouraged. Women and non-binary people need specific training to make change in traditionally male-dominated places of decision-making.  \nThis year\, GEF has selected and supported a group of twenty Feminist Climate Ambassadors to do just that. We have also run a series of public events on the nexus of gender equality and the climate crisis\, and are exploring ecofeminism and ethics of care as a potential framework for societal change. Our Green Hub programming continues this work!  \nProgramme:  \n11:00 – 12:30 Ecofeminist Roundtable: Conversation Circle on Ecofeminist Experience\, with the support of Oikos  \nAs individual selves\, we are part of a web of relationships with both human and non-human others. Within ethics of care\, we maintain nourishing and caring relationships.   \nIn this workshop\, we discuss what this entails for us\, and we put ethics of care into practice by creating a safe space for us to connect\, tell our stories and listen to each other. There is space for self-expression and deep listening.  \nThe session will be completed by a moment of body-care (through breath work and movement). Care for our physical bodies supports the connection to ourselves and helps to solidify the connections between self and the self\, self and the fellow participant\, and ultimately towards self and the world we live in.  \n  \n15:00 – 17:00 Rethinking People\, Planet and Profit with Feminist Climate Ambassadors\, with the support of Visio  \nJoin GEF’s Feminist Climate Ambassadors to renew your thinking about the three dimensions of sustainability. SUMMARY:Climate Emergency Economy at the Green Hub
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nAlongside several partners\, GEF has been investigating the requirements of a so-called Climate Emergency Economy. We’ve focused on the questions and sectors that pose a particular challenges such as agriculture\, transport infrastructure and trade\, and hydrogen for the green transition. \nWhich sectors should be prioritised for limited “green hydrogen” and what are the geopolitical implications of hydrogen imports? How does zero carbon relate to food sovereignty and the EU’s Farm to fork strategy? And what needs to change in transport infrastructure investments in Europe and overseas (e.g. through foreign aid) to ensure a zero-carbon future? \nJoin our sessions at the COP26 Green Hub to engage in this debate and learn more about our findings! \n\nContext\nThis webinar is part of the project Climate Emergency Economy–organised by GEF with the support of Green House Think Tank\, Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks\, Green Foundation Ireland\, and the Foundation for Environment and Agriculture. The project explores policies required in the most difficult sectors to decarbonise for Europe to reach net-zero emissions. \nPracticalities\nThese sessions will all take place at GEF’s COP26 Green Hub. SUMMARY:Ecopolis: Dare to Care
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nThe global Covid-19 crisis brought healthcare into the spotlight. But care extends beyond the strictly medical: it includes everything we do to preserve and restore the world. The erosion of the welfare state\, the plundering of the Global South and the crossing of planetary boundaries are worrying developments. And what about the connection between the exploitation of man and of nature?\nWhat if tomorrow we found the courage to truly care for all people and other earthlings\, for our unique living world? Seeing nature merely as raw material for plundering man\, and man as merely driven by competition: can we put that behind us? Can care be a new starting point\, based on connectedness and generosity? Can care\, as an emancipatory principle\, underpin politics and economics?\nEcopolis makes room for these questions\, and many more\, during a day of lectures\, conversations\, workshops\, literature and performance. The analyses and proposals come together from many perspectives: alert carers and emancipated people in need of care\, inspiring researchers and committed artists\, fellow citizens who start from the local context and guests who bring in experiences and wisdom from indigenous cultures and the Global South.\nBecause ecological challenges know no national or linguistic borders\, Ecopolis is diverse\, international and interactive. \n  \nContext\nEcopolis is the perfect annual day to meet people who care about a sustainable future. SUMMARY:Radical Humanism and Ecological Conversion: Ivan Illich and Alexander Langer
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nIs Europe ready for the ecological conversion that scientific evidence stresses on us? \nIvan Illich and Alexander Langer are influential interpreters of the economic critique of consumer society. Their work and practice offer many stimuli for reflection and action in the contemporary context. \nThis conference will offer the opportunity to compare Illich’s and Langer’s views and proposals\, and to examine not only their freshness and relevance but also their critical aspects. \nThe seminar will dedicate sessions to the translation of theoretical thinking into practical choices as they emerge from the different programs and practices of the Green political sphere\, in order to design and develop new humanistic approaches and environmental strategies. \nContext\nIvan Illich and Alexander Langer are two of the most authoritative interpreters of a critique of the consumer society based on the theory of market self-regulation. \nIllich’s importance in representing a critical voice towards the Western social model\, by now of global dimension\, is well known. We aim to venture further and discuss the personal trajectory and new message that he wanted to propose without coming to terms with the corruptive logics of a consumerist society\, and how can this apply to the present generations. \nLanger spoke of the social desirability of an ecological conversion even before Pope Francis did so in his Encyclical. This can only succeed when it is socially desirable. What we need is a ritual passage which has the allure of solemnity: an “ecological constituent\,” and a widespread commitment to reconsider our ways of living\, producing\, consuming in order to make our life-styles compatible with the limited amount of resources the world can provide. \nThe various conference contributions will study the religious aspects\, those linked to agricultural and territorial choices\, the theme of the frontier\, and the economic and political aspects measured by the real goods and needs of the civil communities throughout Europe. \n  \nProgramme and Speakers\nFriday\, 22/10  \n17:00 Conference opening  \n\nMauro Bozzetti & Franz Tutzer \n\n17:30 “In the sign of the flying fish:” Ivan and Alexander  \n\nBarbara Duden\, Hannover University \n\nSaturday\, 23/10  \n9:00 It is not enough to be indignant. SUMMARY:Green Horizons Academy: The Good Story
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nThe Green Horizons Academy is an educational programme that aims to expand the ideas surrounding the green movement towards the alternative liveable future across Europe. Addressing the climate crisis and environmental issues is a home ground for the greens. Still\, we need to better prepare for the forthcoming battles of narratives\, where everyone is “playing the green card”. \nPopulists and conservative authoritarians\, especially in countries with a weak green opposition\, are casting a long shadow over social movements and appropriating environmentalism. Europe’s narrative of openness and solidarity has been put to the test amid the pandemic. The Academy is a space for theory and practice that can serve both for political actors to step into closer communication with the people\, and for citizens to politicize the growing environmental struggles. \nThis year’s Green Horizons Academy’s main topic is building a successful narrative around green values that resonates with the broad public\, therefore its title – THE GOOD STORY. \nOver three days\, we hope to inspire European green actors and raise the capacities of citizens from South-East Europe in their approach to presenting green values and agendas. GHA will also examine the resilience of the local Green political organisations and offer the space for authentic policy debates designed for and from the region. SUMMARY:Recovering sustainably from the pandemic
DESCRIPTION:The European Green Deal – Thinking Locally\n  \n\nThe impact of the Covid 19 pandemic on Europe’s economy\, health systems and democracy is enormous. In terms of European policy it will now be important to shape the economic construction in Europe in a socially and ecologically sustainable way. The policy fields of climate\, energy\, environment\, digitalisation as well as economy\, labour and social affairs must be thought together in the European Green Deal and shaped in such a way that social cohesion in Europe is strengthened. Germany\, as the most populous and economically strongest country\, will have to play a central role in this tour de force. The EU’s ability to act will continue to depend largely on the German government’s will to act. The Annual Conference on European Policy 2021 of the Heinrich Böll Foundation will therefore focus on the question of which European policy priorities the new German government should and must set after the federal elections in autumn 2021. \nAt this year’s annual conference on European policy\, which will also take place online\, European representatives from politics\, science\, political consultancy and civil society will analyse and discuss the current crisis and appropriate strategies to overcome it. \nThe focus is on the local dimension of the European Green Deal. \nIn many places\, municipalities are seen as the new bearers of hope. Initiatives at the local level are already making a difference in many areas and are seen as potential drivers of the socio-ecological transformation\, be it in the energy transition\, sustainable mobility and infrastructure or in public space. We want to let some initiatives have their say and present good examples from practice that show the way forward and provide inspiration for imitation. \nSpeakers\n\nRasmus Andresen\, MEP\, EFA/Greens\, Brussels\nDr. Franziska Brantner\, German MP\, Alliance90/The Greens\, Berlin\nAnnika Hedberg\, Head of Sustainable Prosperity for Europe Programme\, European Policy Centre\, Brussels\nDirk Holemans\, Co-president of the Green European Foundation GEF\, Brussels\nBenedek Jávor\, Representative of the City of Budapest\, Brussels/Budapest\nAres Kalandides\, Professor of Place Management\, Manchester Metropolitan University\, Manchester\nPhoebe Koundouri\, Professor\, University of Economics and Business\, Athens\nAudrey Mathieu\, EU Climate Policy Officer\, Head of Berlin Office\, Germanwatch\, Berlin\nNeil Makaroff\, European Policy Officer\, Reseau Action Climat\, Paris\nBozena Ryszawska\, Professor\, Wroclaw University of Economics and Business\, Wroclaw\nClaude Turmes\, Minister for Energy and Spatial Planning Luxembourg\, Luxembourg\nDr. Ellen Ueberschär\, President\, Heinrich Böll Foundation\, Berlin\nSanna Vesikansa\, Deputy Mayor\, for Social Services and Health Care\, Helsinki\n\n\n\nPractical information\n\nTime: Thursday\, 10 May 2020\, 14.00 – 19.00 CEST \nConference languages: English/German with simultaneous translation \n\nFull programme and registration:  See the Heinrich Böll Foundation website here

SUMMARY:Green Economy Congress
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nToday we live in a time of great crisis\, confronted by one of the severest challenges that humanity has ever faced: COVID – 19 is seen as health and ecological consequence of the „business as usual “model that ignored boundaries of environmental capital\, social inequalities and economic unsustainability. The Western Balkans region is affected on many levels: its fragile democracy is deteriorating\, natural resources commodified\, and local communities completely left on their own. There is no time to waste – we need to act now! \nFor four years now\, Green Economy Congress aims to build synergies with actors who are developing positive initiatives in the Western Balkans and EU on a narrative which allows us to have a bigger impact in the society transformation. In 2020. more than ever we need to work together to overcome the crisis. What gives us hope is that all over the region\, citizens are taking direct action – fighting for river conservation\, demanding clean air and pointing out on damaging practices like deforestation\, excessive extractive industry\, unsustainable tourism\, etc. Public policies and action from decision-makers are yet to follow. \nThe coronavirus crisis recovery and EU Green New Deal can be a chance to reshape a sustainable\, inclusive economy\, stimulating industry\, protecting essential biodiversity systems and tackling climate change in Western Balkans – but only if it has a holistic approach. For two days\, on October 15th and 16th\, 2020. this year in digital space\, using lectures and panel discussions\, we will try to map this momentum. \nContext:\nThis is the fourth edition of the Green Economy Congress\, a successful conference series that has connected experts\, activists\, and academics across the Western Balkan and beyond. While this year’s edition will be taking place online\, we hope to continue connecting great speakers and participants and sparking inspiring discussions on the topic at hand. \nSpeakers:\nGreen Agenda for Western Balkans: Politics & Policy \n\nLiljana Popovska\, DOM Macedonia\nLjiljana Jokić\, URA Montenegro\nIva Marković\, Organization for political ecology Polekol\n\n(Un)sustainable: tourism in nature protected areas \n\nMilan Ruzic\, Bird Protection and Study Society of Serbia\n\nAgenda 2030: Path for Green Balkans \n\nNatasa Gligorijevic\, Center for Sustainable Development of Serbia\n\nMy Green New Deal: Green Economy from Idea to Reality \n\nVeljko Nešić\, Small food producers in Serbia\nPredrag Milovanović\, Organela\n\nGreen Cities and The New Urban Agenda \n\nSiniša Trkulja\, independent expert\n\nClimate Neutrality in Western Balkans: Time to set a new path \n\nVedad Suljic\, Regional Education and Information Center for Sustainable Development in South-East Europe\nAna Petrovska\, DOM Macedonia\n\nProgramme:\nOctober 15th\, 2020 \n\n11: 00 – 12: 30 Panel Discussion – Green Agenda for Western Balkans: Politics & Policy\n13: 00 – 13: 45 Lecture – (Un)sustainable: tourism in nature protected areas\n\nOctober 16th\, 2020. \n\n11: 00 – 11: 45 Lecture – Agenda 2030: Path for Green Balkans\n12: 00 – 13: 15 Panel Discussion – My Green New Deal: Green Economy from Idea to Reality\n13: 30 – 14: 15 Lecture – Green Cities and The New Urban Agenda\n14: 30 – 15:45 Panel Discussion – Climate Neutrality in Western Balkans: Time to set a new path\n\nPracticalities:\nThe Green Economy Congress will be taking online on 15 and 16 October\, from 11:00 to 16:30. \nLectures and discussions will take place in Serbian and English\, with simultaneous translation provided. \nPlease apply here. SUMMARY:For a new territorial perspective - imagining post-urban alternatives (Paris)
DESCRIPTION:Event background\nThis event is part of the transnational project Cities as Places of Hope in the European Union which explores progressive city networks and their potential to foster real change – may it be on food\, energy or migration policies. Cities are organising themselves increasingly in trans-local networks and are pushing the boundaries of traditional governance structures. \nAbout the event\nThis conference\, organised with the support of Guillaume Gontard\, French Senator\, and Fondation de l’Écologie Politique will delve into the subject of post-urbanism and its implications on municipal politics. \nOur landscapes are undergoing major changes\, first and foremost the concentration of human settlement in major metropolitan areas. Promoted by governments for decades\, these concentrations and densities appear less and less ecologically habitable\, sociologically fair\, economically viable and democratically constituted. In response to this socio-ecological excess\, a different territorial perspective opens up\, initiated by alternatives that offer other places\nto live and forms of life\, more respectful relationships to environment and other living beings\, forms of cooperative economies and more functional direct forms of political action. \nSuch ideas and practices can highlight new paths towards a ecological\, post-urban society. \nDraft Programme\n13:30 Registration \n14:00 Opening – Guillaume Gontard\, French Senator\, and Alice Canabate\, Vice-president of Fondation de l’Écologie Politique \n14:15 First Roundtable – Saturated European metropolises or the need for a future of post-urban territories (and policies) \nWith: Guillaume Faburel (Lyon University 2)\, Mathilde Girault (Lyon University)\, Sébastien Marot (École d’architecture Paris-Est) \n15:30 Presentation of “Bioregion 2050”\, a report from the from the Momentum Institute and the Forum Vies Mobiles \nWith: Yves Cochet\, Agnès SinaÏ and BenoÎt Thévart \n16:15 Second Roundtable –  Alternative socio-ecological formats and perspectives for the bio-region in Italy and France \nWith: Ilaria Agostini (Bologna University)\, Christophe Laurens (Master Alternatives urbaines de Vitry sur Seine)\, Daniela Poli (Florence University) \n17:45 Conclusion and synthesis – Guillaume Gontard and Guillaume Faburel \nPracticalities\nThe event will be held in French. SUMMARY:Our Future: Fair & Healthy Food (Brussels)
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nA systemic crisis permeates our food and agricultural sector. Food\, turned into a commodity to generate profit\, feeds the greed of the few rather than the stomachs of the many in a healthy way. Decades of yield maximization and export-oriented monocultures in a globalising economy have broken our food and agricultural chain. Business-as-usual has become impossible. \nBut the tide is changing. More and more research and policy reports and practices point to a hopeful alternative approach to food and agriculture: Agroecology\, as an integrated vision\, aims to reconnect soil\, plants\, animals and humans with the environment. It integrates the social dimension of a fair and sustainable food system. At the same time\, more and more cities put this vision in practice in concrete urban food policies. It is now the time for a new EU policy\, reflecting and supporting this holistic vision. \nProgramme\n09:00 Registration \n09:30 Words of welcome by  by Dirk Holemans (Green European Foundation) \n09:45 Fair & healthy food: presentation of GEF paper by Kati Van de Velde (Think Tank Oikos) \n10:05 Our food as a commons: Jose Luis Vivero Pol (scholar\, Head WFP VAM Myanmar) \n10:25 Towards ecologically & socially resilient food and agriculture systems by Thomas Van Craen (CEO Triodos Bank) \n11:20 Diversity & inclusion in food practices: Deirdre Woods (food justice practitioner & researcher) \n  \n11:40 Towards a Common Food Policy for the EU by Olivier De Schutter (Co-chair of IPESFood) \n12:00 How to build a better world: Challenges & opportunities in the global governance of food security by Mario Arvelo (Dominican Ambassador to the UN in Rome & Chair of the Committee on World Food Security)\n \n12:20 Urban food policy: the city of Gent by Tine Heyse (Alderwoman city of Ghent) \n12:40 Reaction by Paulo Caruso de Lima (Liaison Officer\, FAO Brussels) and Q&A with the audience \n13:00 Closing remarks by Petra De Sutter (MEP Greens/EFA) \n13:30 End \n  \n\n  \nRegistration\nEntrance to this event is free\, but spaces are limited and registration is required. \nIf you would like to attend this event\, please register via the form found here.  \n\n

SUMMARY:Cities as Places of Hope (Brussels)
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nIf we look at the European Union today\, many things do not appear so bright: rising far right nationalism\, Brexit\, member States resisting alignment on policies concerning climate change or migration. \nHowever\, there is another\, more optimistic perspective of Europe: one that sees how hopeful movements are unfolding and where progressive cities\, together with their citizens\, are succeeding in developing future-orientated answers. \nCities are the social laboratories where new answers are designed\, tested and implemented. Think of local food policies\, cities full of bikes and public transport\, renewable energy systems. Those iniatives are embedded in cross-border networks\, sharing knowledge and experience\, aiming for a sustainable society that respects social and ecological boundaries. \nWe will welcome speakers at the forefront of these inspiring movements in cities\, to discuss and exchange on their experiences and best practices! \nProgramme\n16:00 Welcome \n16:10 Cities as places of hope in the EU: presentation of the GEF paper – Merlijn De Rijcke\, Oikos Think Tank + Q & A \n16:35 How a bold and progressive local mobility policy improved the living conditions of the residents of Ghent – Filip Watteeuw – Alderman of Mobility of the city of Ghent + Q & A \n17:05 Coffee break \n17:25 Agathe Cavicchioli\, Interim Head of City Diplomacy at C40 \n17:55 Municipal power – Vedran Horvat – Director of Institute for Political Ecology (Croatia) and GEF Board member + Q & A \n18:25 BEES Coop (TBC) – Brussels’ first participative supermarket + Q & A \n19:00 Networking drinks \nRegistration\nAttendance to this event is free\, please register your place via the form found here. \n\n

SUMMARY:Climate Emergency – Raising Ambition (London)
DESCRIPTION:Event Background\nWith the consequences of climate change beinng increasingly perceptible through extreme weather events (both worldwide and in European countries)\, verifiable research is urgently needed to set targets and policies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions by the amount necessary to secure a livable environment. At the same time\, policies to reduce greenhouse emissions are often attacked for threatening existing jobs.  \nGEF’s transnational project “Strengthening Climate Targets\, Creating Local Climate Jobs” sets out to explore what greenhouse emissions reductions would mean in practical terms for our job markets and economies\, and whether jobs could be created in rural areas across Europe. Can both a safe and just economically sound life for all be achieved? To this end\, our project undertook research on the potential to create more climate jobs in three EU countries with diverse historic and economic prerequisites: United Kingdom\, Ireland and Hungary. In 2019 the project is expanding also to Poland.  \nAbout the Event: \nThis climate energy conference is a one-day event for those looking to act on the climate emergency.  What can local authorities and communities do?  What scale of change do we need to be looking at?  What could the benefits be for jobs and local economies?  How do we keep fossil fuels in the ground?  \nSpeakers:  \n\nAndrew Simms\, (Rapid Transition Alliance) – the Climate Emergency\nNadine Andrews\, (Green House) – Climate psychology & cultural shifts\nPaul Allen\, (Centre for Alternative Technology) – Zero Carbon Britain\nJonathan Essex and Peter Sims\, (Green House) – Climate Jobs\nSam Mason (PCS Union) – Need for a Just Transition\nFatima Ibrahim (IPPR Environmental Justice Commission) – Need for a Just Transition\nYves Marignac\, (Association négaWatt) – Europe-wide transition\nSimon Pickering (Councillor\, Stroud District Council) – Reducing in-house emissions\nPhilip Webber (formerly of Kirklees Council) – Street by street retrofit\nIan Christie (University of Surrey) – Widening the coalition\nAgamemnon Otero (Repowering London) – Renewable energy\nPage Dykstra (Community Supported Agriculture Network UK) – Land/Food Transition\nRobert Read (The A Team Foundation) – Land/Food Transition\nJohn Webb (Herts WithOut Waste) – Materials/Waste Transition\nNeil Pitcairn (United Kingdom Without Incineration Network) – Materials/Waste Transition\nStephen Joseph (Transport Policy Consultant) – Transport Transition\n\nProgramme:  \n10:00-10:30 – Registration & refreshment \n10:30 – Welcome and introductions – Natalie Bennett Green European Foundation\, Anne Chapman Green House\n– The Climate Emergency – Andrew Simms\n– Climate Psychology and cultural change – Nadine Andrews\n– Questions and discussion\n– Introduction to parallel sessions and workshops \n11:45 – Tea/ coffee break \n12:00 – Parallel sessions – Making a plan\n– Green New Deal and Just Transition – Fatima Ibrahim and Sam Mason\n– Climate Jobs – Jonathan Essex and Peter Sims\n– Zero Carbon plans – Paul Allen (Centre for Alternative Technology) and Yves Marignac (negaWatt) \n13:00 – Lunch and information/discussion tables on:\n– Reuse and recycling – Herts WithOut Waste & UKWIN\n– Sustainable and Active Transport – Stephen Joseph\,\n– Renewable energy – Repowering London\n– Food and farming – Community Supported Agriculture Network & Team A Foundation\n– Street by street retrofit – Philip Webber (formerly Kirklees council)\n– Local councils – Simon Pickering\, Stroud District Council \n14:30 – Workshops – Making it happen\n– Making an Action Plan – Simon Pickering\, with Jonathan Essex and Peter Simms\n– Identifying key enablers and blockers of a step change in emissions.\n– Widening the Coalition – Ian Christie\, Surrey Climate Commission\n– Establishing partnerships\, setting up a local climate commission and citizens assemblies. \n15:30 – tea/coffee break \n15:45 – Making change happen – Feed back from workshops and panel discussion chaired by Natalie Bennett \n17:00 – Conference Ends \nPracticalities: \nConference fee: £10 \nPlease register for this event via the form found here. \n\n
