SUMMARY:The socio-economic model of the Commons in Europe (El Prat de Llobregat)
DESCRIPTION:Context\nLocal governments have to rethink their way of doing politics with more and more citizens’ initiatives emerging across Europe that are establishing new organisations\, introducing a shared economy and leave the image of a passive citizenry behind them. The challenge ahead is therefore to build specific structures and processes that foster synergies between the public and the commons domain. \nThese developments could lead to a prototype of transformative cities\, being the driving force introducing the socio-economic model of the Commons as the new paradigm. Governmental structures however must be reformed to constitute a so-called Partner State\, where politicians perceive their constituency as a community of citizens with a lot of experience and creativity and top-down politics are left behind. \nAbout the event\nBy highlighting several best practices from Catalonia and all over Europe and in particular the municipal level as the most fertile ground for commons practices\, this conference will showcase inspiring examples of how this Partner State can be realised and organised in the best possible way. \nDraft Programme\n9:30 – 10:00 REGISTRATION  \n10:00 – 10:15 WELCOME Susanne Rieger\, Green European Foundation Co-president \n10:15 – 10:30 INTRODUCTION TO THE CONFERENCE Sergi Alegre\, Fundació Nous Horitzons \n10:30 – 11:15 KEYNOTE: A NEW SOCIO-ECONOMIC MODEL – COMMONS IN EUROPE Dirk Holemans\, Director Oikos Think Tank and City Councillor of Ghent (Belgium) \n11:15 – 11:45 COFFEE BREAK \n11:45 – 12:45 MUNICIPALITY AND THE COMMONS \n\nThe case of Barcelona Lluís Torrens\nThe case of Prat de Llobregat Lluís Mijoler\n\n12:45 – 13:45 ECONOMY OF THE COMMONS \n\nEsperanzah! SUMMARY:Greening the Economy in Balkans: Cooperative Society (Belgrade)
DESCRIPTION:Context\nAt the beginning of 2018\, a publication The Revision of the Economy in the Balkans: Change Policy\, Not Climate\, as well as a green economy manual\, was published as a part of the transnational project carried out by Green European Foundation supported by Blue Link Bulgaria\, Sunrise Macedonia and Networked Serbia. \nThe research done in the previous years has shown immense potential and pointed out the fact that these national economies are currently going in a different direction: subsidising multinational companies and mega infrastructure projects\, privatizing natural resources. A process of political centralization\, by taking competences from the local level and exclusion of the citizens from the economic and social decisions is evident. In this political environment\, the only possible solution is a creation of bottom-up\, self-organized\, citizens’ initiatives with a purpose of association of labor and services. The countries of the region have their own historical legacy of a cooperative economy in socialism\, which is now in a process of renewal. \nAbout the event\nThe research has shown the immense potential of the process of greening the economy in Balkans\, which is currently challenged. The conference will aim to present the relevant results of the study and to be a platform for discussion on how to start a green business in Serbia and on the cooperative model as one of the viable solutions. \nThe conference will be an occasion to present the main results of the research published in The Revision of the Economy in the Balkans: Change Policy\, Not Climate. The event will host two panel discussions with prominent organisations and individuals working on the green economy in Serbia. \nProgramme\n11:45 – 12:00 Opening a conference\n12:00 – 13:30 Panel: How to start a green business in Balkans? \nHristina Odžaklieska\, Sunrise Macedonia\nMiloš Stančić\, Networked/GAJP\nJelena Plavanski\, PKS- Belgrade Chamber of Commerce\nIvana Marković\, Trag Fondation\nModerator: Violeta Jovanov Peštanac\, Networked \n13:45 – 15:15 Panel: Green Cooperatives and Cooperative Economy: Innovative Forms of Economics \nRepresetative of Baštalište\nRepresentative of Association for Sustainable Development (ASOR)\nStjepan Car\, Green Energy Cooperative (ZEZ) Hrvatska\nKristina Cvejanov\, Serbian Packaging waste Recyclers Association\nModerator: Iva Marković\, Polekol \n15:15 – 15:30 Closing word: Žaklina Živković\, Networked \n Stay tuned for updates\nSubscribe to our Facebook event\, where you will receive reminders and the latest news on content. SUMMARY:Transforming the society from the City of the Commons (Vitoria-Gasteiz)
DESCRIPTION:Context: European cities as the key element of transnational governance\nMore and more cities across Europe and worldwide are organising themselves through initiatives such as Eurocities\, Fearless Cities\, Fabcities and many more\, to work together in areas such as climate policy\, renewable energy or urban economy. \nEspecially cities with progressive governments are spearheading this development and are becoming the key factor of transnational governance.  Oftentimes the respective initiatives start from the bottom up and there must then be a fertile ground provided by local administrations so they can flourish. Those new types of relationships between the public sphere and the commons can become the key drivers within a transformative city model that will ultimately help us achieve more just and ecological societies. \nAbout the event\nThis conference aims to serve as a collective reflection on the urban governance of cities and the limits and functions of the cooperation between administration and an active citizenry across Europe. Experts from Italy\, Belgium and Spain will share their experiences and best practices that are implemented in other cities. SUMMARY:Who Will Deliver(oo) the New Economy? - Technological disruption and new forms of regulation (Brussels)
DESCRIPTION:Context\nCompanies presenting themselves as mere digital platforms\, such as Uber\, Airbnb\, Deliveroo\, etc.\, are changing our economy in a rapid pace. These techno-economic disrupters not only change the way we produce or deliver services\, but also lead to radical changes in the labour market\, the availability and the organization of work. They question the existing regime of our national welfare states with a social security system build on full employment in stable and localized jobs. \nThe crucial question is how we will be able to re-embedded these new companies that tend to ignore legislation and deny the European social contract. This is more than an economic issue: more flexible and precarious jobs feed the growing insecurity in our society\, which is a feeding ground for populists and national authoritarianism. So we need progressive answers that embrace the possibilities of digital platforms while at the same time empowering workers and their freedom and building new systems of social security. \nProgramme\n13:00-13:10 Opening words (Aurélie Maréchal\, Director Green European Foundation) \n13:10-13:35 Keynote – The Need for a Green Transformation. Freedom and Security in Uncertain Times (Dirk Holemans\, Director Oikos Denktank)\, followed by a Q&A \n13:35-14:00 The Ethics of Things. Staying Human in the Robot Age (Jochanan Eynikel\, Business philosopher Etion) \n14:00-14:35 A Manifesto to Reform the Gig Economy (Antonio Aloisi\, PhD candidate University of Milan) \n14:35-15:10 Cabfair – We Can Do Better than Uber (Duncan McCann\, New Economics Foundation) \n15:10 coffee break \n15:20-16:00 Panel debate –The European Dimension\, moderated by Aurélie Maréchal \n\nPhilippe Lamberts (MEP Greens/EFA)\nFrank Moreels (President European Transport Workers Federation)\n\n16:00-16:45 Panel debate – The Future of New Economy \n\nMeyrem Almaci (President Groen party)\nAntonio Aloisi  (University Milano)\nDuncan McCann (New Economics Foundation)\n\n16:45 Reception & Networking \nMore information\nThe event is free of charge – to register\, please fill in this form. SUMMARY:Eco-innovations for Economic Change & Shared Prosperity (Sofia\, Bulgaria)
DESCRIPTION:This event is a part of the ongoing project “Revision of the Economy in the Balkans: Change Policy not Climate” which aspires to raise awareness among stakeholders\, politicians and the general public for the economic potential of a Green Economy in Serbia\, Macedonia and Bulgaria\, to stimulate changes in consumption and production patterns\, and promote a participatory approach to policy making. The project is implemented jointly by the Green European Foundation\, BlueLink Foundation (Bulgaria)\, Networked (Serbia) and the Sunrise Association for Sustainable Social and Economic Development (Macedonia). \nConference:\nThe topic of the event is closely related to one of the major priorities of the Bulgarian presidency of the EU\, which starts on 1 January 2018\, as defined by the so-called EU presidency trio – Bulgaria (Jan-Jun 2018)\, Estonia and Austria\, during the meeting of the Council of the EU ministers of the environment which took place on 13 and 14 July\, 2017 in Talin. The priority refers to eco-innovations as an engine for the transition to circular economy and stimulating green investments in energy transformation and clean technologies\, in order to spur the overall competitiveness and achievement of shared prosperity across the EU. \nA comparative study focusing on European climate\, renewable energy and Green economy policy landscapes took place between April and September 2017 in Bulgaria\, Macedonia and Serbia. The most important conclusions from the study will be presented and discussed at the conference\, as well as in 3 national research publications\, Green political handbook and journalistic materials published on regional electronic media – BlueLink. \nProgramme:\nPlease download the detailed programme of the conference here. \nRegistration:\nEnquiries regarding participation and logistics are expected by 06 November 2017\, to the attention of Mrs. Eva Stefanova\, EU Projects assistant\, at the following email address: eva@bluelink.net.

SUMMARY:Conference ‘Dealing with extreme weather events’ (UK)
DESCRIPTION:Context\nClimate change is going to increase the frequency and severity of extreme weather. Already we are seeing the impacts of this\, with unprecedented flooding in the North of England in December 2015\, flooding in Spain in 2016 and the heat wave in Paris in 2003. How can we learn from these events so that we are better prepared in future? \nConference\nDue to climate change\, extreme weather events become more likely and hence instability and uncertainty for the communities affected increases. SUMMARY:ECOPOLIS 2017: Digital Together - For a Just Society
DESCRIPTION:The main theme of Ecopolis 2017 is the impact of the digital era on relationships between people\, between people and organisations as well as between people and politics. In spite of the insecurity of the modern world\, the rapid speed of advancing technologies will not slow down or go away. On the contrary\, our reliance on these technologies will only increase in our daily lives. Therefore\, it will be crucial to empower people to work together\, share ideas\, and connect with politicians in new ways. \nWhat is Ecopolis?\nEcopolis is a full day event incorporating several key note speeches\, high-level panel discussions and round table workshops\, which will converge around the possibilities of digital technologies to unite people in different ways. The panels\, among others\, will for instance be entitled ‘Tools for democracy’\, and ‘Individual autonomy and digital commons’. A core question will be how we can build political communities in the digital era and what policies can be developed on the EU level to facilitate this goal? \nThe aim of Ecopolis is to set up a fruitful dialogue between different sectors of society on the socio-ecological challenges\, to provide a platform for exchange of innovative ideas and perspectives. The Green European Foundation will contribute to the European dimension of this event and interpretation in English\, French\, and Dutch will guarantee broad accessibility to the event. \nProgramme\nThe full programme of Ecopolis 2017 can be found here. \nSpeakers\nSpeakers will be Yochai Benkler (Harvard University Professor and co-director Berkman Center for Internet & Society)\, Ana Naomi de Sousa (Filmmaker and journalist)\, Kate Raworth (Economist and author)\, Aral Balkan (European Cyborg Rights Activist and designer and developer )\, Jeroen Olyslaegers (Novelist and playwright)\, and many more. SUMMARY:European Youth Conference 2017 in Gdańsk
DESCRIPTION:The three-day Conference in Gdańsk addressed issues including globalisation and European and nationalist answers to it. From  24 to 26 July\, we explored the current challenges to open societies and inclusive democracies\, and how people risk being divided along lines of integration and identity. Moreover\, the programme included practical workshops and ample space for networking.   \nWe discussed important points of reference and processes that are shaping the worldview of engaged young Europeans\, who on an everyday basis are searching for ways to make a socially responsible\, just and sustainable Europe happen\, and also focus on the causes of and reactions to growing feelings of uncertainty\, injustice and fear in EU member states in a beautiful setting at the Baltic Sea.\n \nGEF Workshops\nThe Green European Foundation contributed to this conference with three relevant workshops: \n\nWIDEN YOUR OUTLOOK – NETWORKING SESSION (Tuesday\, 25 July\, 15h-17h): To face today’s challenges\, it is crucial that grassroots movements and activists connect with each other and collaborate to strengthen their impact. This session reflected the needs of youth leaders to expand their network and identify resources which the other organisations/ participants present at the event can offer them.\nONLINE LEARNING FOR GREEN POLITICS (Tuesday\, 25th of July\, 17h30-19h00): During this workshop\, we shared the experience of Green European Foundation in developing e-learning programmes. Furthermore\, the workshop provided an interactive space for exploring ways in which the participants can make use of new (online) technologies to advance their own learning and activities.\nTELLING THE STORY: GETTING YOUNG GREEN VOICES HEARD (Wednesday\, 26 July\, 11h-13h): This workshop aimed to give participants some tips and tools to make their voice heard. From coming up with an angle to turn an important topic into a compelling news story\, to pitching their proposal and getting their work published – we walked them through the steps to get their story out there.\n\n More Information \nOther useful information can be found here: http://calendar.boell.de/de/event/european-youth-conference or you can send an email to eyc2017@pl.boell.org. \n\nRegistration: Applications closed on 30 April 2017 \nDate: 24 to 26 July 2017 \nVenue: Europejskie Centrum Solidarności I European Solidarity Centre\, Gdańsk (Poland)

SUMMARY:"Green Values\, Religion and Secularism" in Dublin
DESCRIPTION:The project Green Values\, Religion and Secularism\nFollowing the successful implementation of the project Green Values\, Religion and Secularism over the past two years\, and the publication of a book under the same name\, this conference addressed themes which arose from the seminars held during the past year to promote the book\, and which were outlined in the concluding project report at the end of 2016. \nThe Conference\nIn an era of trending populism\, the conference intended to remind a wide audience of both academia and Green activists of the necessity to consider the values underpinning European democracy and civil society and to engage in a dialogue to educate a wide public on Green viewpoints on how these values can be practiced in the world today. The event aimed at engaging in dialogue with academics on and religious communities on Green values and with Greens on the topic of religious and philosophical values. Therefore\, the debate built on the following themes\, which emerged during the project activities over the past two years. \nProgramme\nThe green critique of modernity approaches a religious critique of humanism\, understood as humans being the measure of all things. Green values are also critical of the idea of the isolated individual as the basis of social and economic life. What are the core values which inspire ecological and social activism? \n9:30-13:00h MORNING SESSION \nWelcome and Introduction: Andrew Pierce on behalf of the Irish School of Ecumenics Trinity College and Nuala Ahern on behalf of Green European Foundation and GFI. \nChair Dr Geraldine Smyth (Adjunct Associate Professor\, ISE): ‘What are the core values which inspire ecological and social activism?’ \n\nDr Erica Meijers (Theologian and Co-Editor of ‘Green Values\, Religion and Secularism’): the work of the German poet Novalis shows that the critical tradition of the Enlightenment and the longing for a world that is whole has always belonged together. They can both contribute to an inclusive humanism today.\nDr Andreas Weber (Biologist and cultural change expert): Only a science\, politics and economics that puts the living world at its heart will be truly sustainable. Andreas discusses the idea that nature is a living commons and is not only about competition\, but also about the commoning activities of a myriad of individual agents living in an ecosystem.\nDr Cathriona Russell (Assistant Professor in Theology\, TCD): Integrating the good life and duty in environmental ethics.\nDr John Feehan (Geologist\, botanist and environmental philosopher): Science\, Spirituality and the Tao: Inching towards a Deeper Consilience.\nFollowed by Q&A session.\n\n14:15-17:00h AFTERNOON SESSION \nChair Dr Andrew Pierce (Head of Discipline Irish School of Ecumenics): Spirit has been conceived as superior to the earthbound and the carnal in western philosophy since the Greeks\, Moreover spirit has been located in the male mind and sexuality and materiality in the female body. Does the papal encyclical ‘Laudato si’ alter the idea of sin to include the desecration of the material world? \n\nDr John Dillon (former Regius Chair of Greek at Trinity College\, founder and Director Emeritus of the Plato Centre);\nDr Mary Condren (Centre for Gender and Women’s Studies TCD; Director of Womenspirit Ireland);\nDr Jacob Erickson (Assistant Professor\, Loyola Institute);\nCatherine Devitt (Environmental Justice Officer\, Jesuit Centre for Faith and Justice);\nFollowed by Q&A session.\n\nMore information\nRegistration: For more information\, contact the Green Foundation Ireland.\nDate & Time: 1 July 2017\, 9:30-17:00\nVenue: Trinity College Dublin\, Irish School of Ecumenics

SUMMARY:To Migrate Is Human
DESCRIPTION:The debate provided a temporal and spatial tour of the facts around migration beyond the current primarily negative narrative. \nAlthough migration is a human phenomenon and has always taken place\, the global crises\, such as the Syrian civil war\, and migratory movements over the last decades have led to a revitalisation of the Nation State and to the return of borders. \nThe event aimed to explore historical examples and lessons of integration to highlight a way forward by proposing a constructive way to deal with migratory movements. By hearing the stories of migrants\, the benefits for society were made clear. The event is a part of GEF’s transnational project in 2017\, which wants to contribute to the development of a New Narrative on Migration for Europe. \n  \n  \nMore Information\nRegistration:  by sending an email to: greeneconomicsinstitute@yahoo.com \nDate: 12 June 2017 (The event is taking place as part of the Green Economics Institute’s Annual Conference from 10 to 12 June) \nVenue: St Hugh’s College\, University of Oxford\, United Kingdom

SUMMARY:"Crossing Borders - Refugee and Asylum Policy in Europe" Conference in Berlin
DESCRIPTION:This event addressed the scope and the causes of the ongoing crisis in relation to Refugee\, Asylum and Migration policies in Europe. Furthermore\, it analysed the EU’s lack of political consensus and co-ordination in the process of decision-making and the impact of this situation on the ongoing crisis. \nThis conference included experts from Europe and the US\, as well as from the EU’s southern neighbour regions\, who discussed crucial issues of Europe’s asylum and migration policies. \nSome of the most important debates that this event aspired to contribute to are: \n\nWhat are our responsibilities as Europeans in face of the refugee crisis?\nHow do debates in Europe differ between countries? What are the reasons for these differences? And how much common ground will we be able to find?\nHow can we create a European refugee policy that enables us to act in solidarity\, while also respecting the Geneva Convention?\nIs it possible to establish a European minimum consensus that goes beyond repression and closing the borders? Or will we instead have to form changing and flexible alliances between member states to decide\, for example\, whether or not to receive refugees or how to cooperate with neighbouring countries that serve as a refuge for refugees and migrant workers?\nHow can we create a common EU border regime?\nHow can the EU improve co-operation with its neighbours\, in order to stabilise Europe’s external borders and improve the conditions for refugees in the initial receiving countries?\n\n  \nPROGRAMME: \nDAY 1: Thursday\, 26th of May (Open to public) \n15h00 Welcome and introduction by Ralf Fücks (President\, Heinrich Böll Foundation\, Berlin) \n15h15 Keynote debate: Europe’s Responsibility – Europe’s Future \nSpeakers: Sven Biscop (Professor and Director “Europe in the World”\, Egmont Royal Institute for International Relations\, Brussels)\, Rosa Balfour (Senior Fellow\, The German Marshall Fund of the United States\, Brussels) and Ralf Fücks (President\, Heinrich Böll Foundation\, Berlin) \n16h45 Panel: European Realities \nSpeakers: Pernilla Bäckman (Researcher\, Swedish Institute for European Policy Studies\, Stockholm)\,  Thanos Dokos (Director-General\, Hellenic Foundation for European & Foreign Policy\, Athens)\, Piotr Buras (Head of Warsaw Office\, European Council on Foreign Relations\, Warsaw)\, Steffen Angenendt (Head of Research Division\, German Institute for International and Security Affairs\, Berlin) \n18h45 Keynote and Panel: Cosmopolitanism\, International Law and National Interests \nSpeakers: Carol Batchelor\, Director of the Division of International Protection\, UNHCR\, Geneva)\, Kathleen Newland (Senior Fellow and Co-Founder of the Migration Policy Institute\, Washington D.C.)\, Aboubakr Jamai (Professor and Dean\, School of Business and International Relations\, IAU College\, Aix-en-Provence/Rabat)\, Rebecca Harms (MEP\, Chair\, The Greens/EFA\, Brussels) \nDAY 2: Friday\, 27th of May (Closed to public) \n10h00 Keynote 1: Europe’s Asylum Policy – A Vision Limited by Realities \nSpeakers: Lotte Leicht (Advocacy Director\, European Union\, Human Rights Watch\, Brussels) and Yves Pascouau (Director of Migration and Mobility Policies\, European Policy Centre\, Brussels) \n11h30 Debate 1: European Asylum Policy: Shared Responsibilities\, Shared Obligations  \nSpeakers: Matthieu Tardis (Research Fellow\, Centre for Migration and Citizenship\, IFRI\, Paris)\, Maciej Duszczyk (Professor and Head of Research Unit\, Centre of Migration Research\, Warsaw)\, Sara Prestianni (ARCI\, Roma) and Reinhard Bütikofer (MEP\, Chair\, The European Green Party\, Brussels) \n14h00 Keynote 2: Europe’s Border Protection – A Vision Limited by Realities \nGerald Knaus (Chairman\, European Stability Initiative\, Berlin/Istanbul) and Doris Peschke (General Secretary\, Churches’ Commission for Migrants in Europe\, Brussels) \n15h30 Debate 2: Repelling\, Sealing Off\, Relocating: Risks and Ramifications of Europe’s Border Protection \nSpeakers: Andreas Takis (Assistant Professor\, Aristotle University\, Thessaloniki)\, Metin Çorabatır (President\, Research Center on Asylum and Migration\, Ankara)\, Manuel Sarrazin (German MP\, Alliance 90/The Greens\, Berlin) and Emina Bužinkić (Activist\, Centre for Peace Studies\, Zagreb) \nLOCATION: Heinrich Böll Foundation\, Schumannstraße 8\, 10117 Berlin\, Germany \nLANGUAGES: The conference was translated simultaneously in German/English.

SUMMARY:"Expulsions" author Saskia Sassen to participate in a debate in Brussels
DESCRIPTION:Saskia Sassen is professor of Sociology at Columbia University in New York. She is an expert on transnational migrations flows and a reference on globalisation. Her books have been translated into 12 languages and she is a member of the Club of Rome. Her criticism of growing inequality has earned her the label of the female “Piketty”. \nThe discussion was introduced by Gie Goris (Mo Magazine)\, with the participation of two special guests: Isabelle Ferreras (Sociologist at UCL\, researcher at FRNRS\, associate at “the labor and worklife program” of Harvard Law School) and Florent Marcellesi (Spokesperson for the Spanish Greens in the European Parliament\, member of the European Parliament as of next October\, and expert in international cooperation). The lecture was held in English\, with translation to French and Flemish. \nSassen’s most recent book\, “Expulsions: Brutality and Complexity in the Global Economy” describes how capitalism has entered a new phase that is increasingly brutal\, even for those who may previously have felt shielded. The usual concepts of injustice and poverty are no longer sufficient to explain the current dislocation\, both socio-economic and ecological\, which is translated by a sharp rise in inequalities and unemployment\, an increasing number of people in incarceration\, as well as the accelerated destruction of land and water reserves. The time has come to recognise these tendencies as exclusions\, or even as expulsions: from one’s livelihood\, one’s home and even from the biosphere which renders life possible. \nWhat Sassen attempted to demonstrate is the complexity generated by the combination of knowledge or technologies\, used within the financial sphere as well as towards the destruction of the environment. This complexity contributes to an obscuring of the responsibilities in this situation. \nPlace: IHECS\, Rue du Poinçon – 1000 BXL \nDate: March 8th\, 2016
