SUMMARY:GEF Report Debate & Lunch: Building Security Through Values
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a timely conversation on rethinking European security through values\nOn 23 April\, GEF will host a discussion and lunch around its recent report\, New Idealism for a Disrupted Europe: Building Security Through Values\, bringing together policymakers\, researchers and practitioners to discuss how values-based politics can contribute to strengthening European resilience in a rapidly shifting geopolitical landscape. \nDrawing on lessons from Central and Eastern Europe\, including Ukraine\, the report encourages Europeans\, but also Greens and progressives to rethink traditional approaches to security—challenging established assumptions and opening space for fresh perspectives. The “new idealism” it advocates aims to harness the power of values across a wide range of areas\, from military and social resilience to diplomacy and democracy promotion. \nThe conversation will feature a panel of experts from across Europe: \nTomas Tomilinas\, Member of Parliament\, Democrats for Lithuania (Demokratų sąjunga „Vardan Lietuvos“) and Committee Member\, European Green Party \nOver the years\, Tomas Tomilinas has worked to advance social reforms\, reduce poverty\, and improve climate policy. Lithuania has made major investments in green energy and stopped a nuclear project in 2012. Tomilinas was one of the leaders of the referendum campaign against that nuclear power plant\, and later served twice in the ruling coalition. He was elected as member of the Committee of the European Green Party in 2025. Back in 2021\, he was expelled from his former party for voting in favour of LGBTQ+ rights in Parliament and that resulting in the creation of the Democtrats party\,a proud member of the European Green Party. As Vice-Chair of the Party and vice-chair of the Parliamentary Committee on European Affairs\, he works hard to change the country’s position on EU decision-making reform\, including ending the single-country veto. He’s author of numerous social projects and initiatives\, articles and three books; he’s a consultant for trade unions\, specialist of adult education and co-founder of the NGO Social Investment Management Centre and political think tank Institute for Democracy (2023) and other organisations. He ha also worked as coordinator of party working groups for preparation of electoral programmes (2012\, 2016\, 2020\, 2024) and was co-initiator of the establishment of trade unions in retail chains (2007). \nGabriela Svárovská\, Member of Parliament; Co-chair\, Czech Greens (Zelení) \nGabriela Svárovská has been a member of the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Parliament since October 2025. In the parliament she serves as a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Committee on Environment. She is a Co-Chair of the Czech Green Party. Ms Svárovská has extensive experience in diplomacy\, human rights\, and civil society. She previously served as the Director of the Human Rights Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic and held key political roles as Press Secretary to President Václav Havel and Advisor to Senator Marek Hilšer. In the non-profit sector\, she co-founded the Prague Civil Society Centre\, an endowment fund dedicated to supporting civic activism and independent media across the countries of the former Soviet Union. Her career has been defined by a commitment to democratic values\, international security\, and the protection of universal human rights. \nJoanna Kaminska\, Mediation and Dialogue expert\, European Parliament\, European Green Party Committee \nJoanna Kaminska has facilitated confidential\, high stake dialogue between political party leaders\, mostly in Central and Eastern Europe and advised on security and democracy building Europe’s top decision-makers for over 15 years. She has served as foreign and security policy advisor to the President of the European Parliament David Maria Sassoli\, and worked on coalition making and consensus building between European political forces for over a decade in the area of security and defence. Political negotiations\, democracy building and fostering dialogue between difficult political personalities are her passion. Currently she works as an advisor on mediation at the European Parliament’s mediation team\, where she forges the culture of compromise between political parties in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine during the war.\nJoanna holds a PhD from the University of London\, Royal Holloway College. She has extensively published on the foreign and security policy and Eastern neighborhood issues. Her last book published with Palgrave Macmillan is entitled Poland and the EU Enlargement: Foreign Policy in Transformation.\nBetween 2018-2024 she was also a Brussels municipal council member. Since 2021 she is a National Council member of the Polish Green Party Zieloni. In December 2024 she got elected to the European Green Party (EGP) committee\, political body managing green parties in Europe\, where she is responsible for building security and defense narratives. \nRichard Wouters\, Project Lead\, Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks\, Netherlands \nRichard Wouters is a project lead at Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks\, the think tank of the Dutch Green party. He is the editor and co-author of various GEF publications\, including ‘Geopolitics of a Post-Growth Europe’ and ‘New Idealism for a Disrupted Europe’. \nLiza Bezvershenko\, Independent Civil Society & Advocacy Specialist \nLiza Bezvershenko is a Ukrainian civil society expert based in Brussels\, specialising in EU-Ukraine relations\, European integration\, and democracy promotion. She acts as Advocacy Coordinator at the NGO European Resolve\, where she contributes to European security and democratic resilience by advancing research\, fostering dialogue between civil society\, decision-makers\, and research institutions\, and supporting public engagement through awareness-raising initiatives. \nShe is a recipient of the 2024 Young Diplomat Award and has been repeatedly featured in international media as a recognised voice for Ukraine in Brussels. \nModerated by Roderick Kefferpütz\, Director\, Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung EU Office \nRoderick Kefferpütz has been the Director of the European Union | Global Dialogue office of the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung since May 2023. SUMMARY:Making our economies fit for the people and the planet (Brussels)
DESCRIPTION:About the event:\nGeopolitical tensions and inequality between and within countries highlight the urgent need for a socially just transition that leaves no one behind. While the EU has taken significant steps through the EU Green Deal\, contradictions persist. Wellbeing is mentioned in EU documents\, but a comprehensive plan for making human and planetary wellbeing a priority in decision-making is still missing. \nAs we strive for an economy that aligns with human needs and planetary boundaries\, new economic approaches are emerging across academia\, civil society\, and institutions. The publication we are launching aims to address this challenge by developing ideas and political proposals to turn the EU’s ambition to “work towards an integrated framework for wellbeing” into action. \nOur political brief is the result of a one-year-long exchange within a  Knowledge Community of more than 60 experts\, mapping key challenges and offering recommendations to guide European institutions in making wellbeing a reality. Join us for the launch event to explore the findings and exchange ideas on pathways forward. View the agenda here. \n\nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 4 March 10:00-12:30 – the debate will be followed by a networking lunch\nLocation: Topos Parlement\, Brussels\, and online\nLanguage: English\nRegistration: please register now to join the event \n\nThis publication launch is organised by the Green European Foundation in collaboration with the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP) and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Strengthening Participation in the Energy Transition: Five action areas for the new EU policy cycle (Brussels)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nDespite the surge in support for right and far-right parties in the European elections\, polls show that European citizens continue to see climate as a top priority for the EU.  The transition to renewables can bring energy security and cheaper bills whilst being the only credible response to the climate crisis. This session will examine how ensure better participation and inclusion in the energy transition in the new EU mandate.   \nProject background\nOver the past year\, the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung European Union and the Green European Foundation have gathered a Knowledge Community of more than 30 energy and social policy experts from very diverse backgrounds. The group has developed a series of five briefs with recommendations for the EU’s new policy cycle\, covering five action areas for boosting participation in the energy transition: energy sharing\, electricity tariffs\, renovation one-stop-shops\, just transition governance and local transition management.   \nAt this launch event\, the core authors from the Knowledge Community will present their key findings and discuss them with stakeholders from EU institutions\, local government and civil society.   \nSpeakers\nThe event will feature interventions from the following speakers and be moderated by Philippa Nuttall\, from the Financial Times’ Sustainability Views. \n\nBenedetta Scuderi\, MEP Greens/EFA\, Italy \nThomas Pellerin-Carlin\, MEP S&D\, France \nIvo Schmidt\, Acting Head of Unit\, Chief Economist\, DG Energy\, European Commission \nFrank Siebern-Thomas\, Head of Unit\, Fair\, Green\, and Digital Transitions\, DG for Employment\, Social Affairs and Inclusion\, European Commission \nMāra Berzina\, Secretary General\, Council of European Energy Regulators (CEER) \nSorcha Edwards\, Secretary General\, Housing Europe  \nVincent Fristot\, Vice-Mayor of Grenoble\, Responsible for Energy transition\nIhsane Haouach\, Energy expert and author\, and Advisory Board Member for the Brussels-Capital Region Regulator for Electricity and Gas (Brugel) \nLaurens Rutten\, Senior Energy Policy Officer\, The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) \n\nProgramme\n\n\n\n14:00 \nWelcome and introduction  \n\n\n14:15 \nFireside chat with Benedetta Scuderi MEP and Ivo Schmidt (DG ENER)\n\n\n14:40 \nPanel 1: How to strengthen participation in the energy transition in the new EU policy cycle: just transition and multi-level governance \n\n\n15:35 \nCoffee break \n\n\n15:55 \nPanel 2: How to help households: tools for citizens’ fair participation in the EU’s energy transition  \n\n\n16:50 \nClosing remarks\, Frank Siebern-Thomas (DG EMPL)\n\n\n17:00 \nDrinks reception \n\n\n\nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 21st November\, 2pm-5pm CET   \nLocation: The Press Club Brussels\, Rue Froissart 95\, 1040 Brussels   \nLanguage:  English    \nRegistration: Please register in advance here (https://forms.monday.com/forms/cb2ddef2838c251f69a58c6d430d2655?r=use1 )  \n\nThis event is co-organised by the Green European Foundation and Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung EU\, with the financial support of the European Parliament and Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung EU to the Green European Foundation. SUMMARY:A European Green Caring Society
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThis event marks the launch of the GEF Political Brief: A European Green Caring Society – Overcoming Fragmentation. This publication is a result of a Knowledge Community led by Proto(to)pia founder and GEF core expert Céline Charveriat\, with contributions of a wider group of experts. It examines the interconnections between care for the climate\, biodiversity and the environment on the one hand and care for humans on the other. It argues that the related systems are currently in a twin crisis and advocate for integrated political solutions. \nKey proposals to achieve this goal are put forward in the Brief. They include extending the EU’s Do No Harm principle to encompass both human and environmental care\, fostering a green care sector\, implementing ecological and progressive tax reforms\, establishing a People’s Sovereignty Fund and creating a new Commission Vice-Presidency for Caring Societies. These initiatives aim to bridge policy silos\, promote sustainability\, and ensure social equity\, thus fostering a resilient and inclusive European society. The concept of a Green Caring Society also has significant international implications. The interconnected nature of both the ecological crisis and public health risks necessitates global cooperation. The EU must minimize the negative impacts of its (care) systems on the rest of the world while maximizing positive outcomes through mutually beneficial partnerships. Supporting a global green care strategy and advocating for the rights of future generations and nature are essential components of this effort. \nA Green Caring Society can bring the EU closer to its citizens and enhance overall well-being while respecting the planet’s boundaries. This unified approach of green and human care policy strands has the potential to significantly enhance public support for the European project and ensure a sustainable\, resilient future for all. \nOn the 11th of July Celine Charveriat will present the Political Brief\, after which we will have experts joining us for a panel discussion. \n  \nSpeakers\n\nCéline Charveriat – Founder of Proto(to)pia Consulting and core expert of the Knowledge Community A European Green Caring Society\nRobbie Stakelum – Head of Policy and Advocacy Social Platform\nNicolas Galudec – Senior Policy Advisor at United Nations Environment Programme\, Brussels office\nSylvia Lorek – Chair of Sustainable Europe Research Institute Germany (SERI)\nBlanca De Riquer Gatell – Advisor Greens /EFA group in the European Parliament\nMaria Nikolopoulou – Member of the European Economic and Social Committee\nModerated by Taube Van Melkebeke – Policy Manager at Green European Foundation\n\n\nAgenda\n9h30: Doors open \n10h – 10h30: Opening of the event\, presentation of the Political Brief A European Green Caring Society – Overcoming Fragmentation \n10h30 – 12h00: Panel discussion: moving towards a European Green Caring Society – what steps to take in the next EU legislation? \n  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 11 July 2024\, 9h30 – 12h \nLocation: Mundo Madou\, Av. des Arts 7/8\, 1210 Brussels (Room: Artemisia)\nand online (link will be shared with registered participants) \nLanguage:  English \nRegistration: This event is free and open to all. SUMMARY:Dismantling the growth narrative
DESCRIPTION:About\nPerpetual economic growth on a finite planet is unsustainable\, yet entrenched economic and media forces persist in upholding it as the sole truth. How did this ideology of growth become so dominant? And more importantly\, how can we shift towards constructing new paradigms? \nTo explore these pressing questions\, GEF is launching the  Spanish translation of the publication\, “On the Narrative of Growth: Unlearning Dogmas.” Delve into thought-provoking insights and participate in a compelling debate on reimagining our economic future. Don’t miss this opportunity to gain a firsthand impression of our publication and contribute to the dialogue shaping our collective tomorrow. Stay tuned for the forthcoming English translation. \nWith this event we wish to contribute to dismantle the discourse of economic growth so that other visions of the world can penetrate the social imaginary. SUMMARY:Green Thinking on Defence and Security (Brussels)
DESCRIPTION:  \nAbout the event\nThis event will feature the launch of two brand-new GEF publications. We will discuss their content with the authors alongside two expert panels\, leaving  ample time for questions and networking.   \nLAUNCH: Credible yet Critical? Green Approaches to Defence (upcoming) – with GRIP \nIn a shifting geopolitical landscape\, Greens are grappling with the interplay between their traditional pacifist roots and the post-February 2022 security challenges. This report delves into their evolving stances on key defence issues\, from EU military cooperation to disarmament\, offering insights into the varied approaches adopted by Green parties from eight EU countries. Expert viewpoints featured throughout provide further feedback and inputs as to what a Green defence policy could (or should) look like. As Europe navigates turbulent waters\, the report calls for renewed commitment to progressive and principled approaches to security and defence. \nLAUNCH: Geopolitics of a Post-Growth Europe \nIt is unlikely that we will be able to defuse the climate time bomb\, let alone other ecological threats\, as long as our economy continues to grow. But what would the end of economic growth mean for geopolitics? Could a European Union that is the first to embrace post-growth still be a global actor? Would it be able to defend itself\, its allies\, democracy\, human rights\, and the international rule of law at a time when aggressive autocracies are invading or threatening their democratic neighbours? By igniting a conversation between critics of economic growth and progressive thinkers on foreign and security policy\, this report addresses uneasy questions that few have dared to ask.   \n  \nProject background\nThis event is part of the Green European Foundation’s thematic focus on geopolitics\, peace\, and security. In a complex\, fractured\, and volatile geopolitical environment\, GEF works to bring together CSOs\, activists\, academics\, and other experts for open and multi-faceted discussions on Europe’s security challenges. With a clear eye on the future\, the foundation aims to cultivate green thinking and European policy proposals that address not just the crises of today\, but can build resilience in a more just and sustainable world.   \n  \nSpeakers\n\nAgatha Verdebout – Groupe de recherche et d’information sur la paix et la sécurité \nAntoine Oger – Institute for European Environmental Policy\nLaëtitia Sédou – European Network Against the Arms Trade \nNicoletta Pirozzi – Istituto Affari Internazionali \nOlivia Lazard – Carnegie Europe\nRichard Wouters – Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks\nRoderick Kefferpütz – Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung EU\n\nAnd more to be announced!  \n  \nProgramme\n15:00 – 15:15 Opening words  \n15:15 – 16:30 Presentation and panel discussion on Green Visions on European Security   \n16:30 – 16:45 Coffee break  \n16:45 – 18:00 Presentation and panel discussion on Geopolitics of a Post-Growth Europe  \n18:00 – 19:00 Closing remarks and networking drinks  \n  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: Wednesday\, March 6th (15:00 – 19:00 CET) \nLocation: Press Club Brussels Europe \nLanguage: English \nRegistration: This event is taking place in person with limited spots. SUMMARY:Post-Growth Geopolitics: Europe at a Crossroads
DESCRIPTION:  \nAbout the event\nOur current socio-economic model is leading us to a dead end\, that’s widely recognised.  However\, concerns abound that a Europe prioritising the abandonment of GDP growth as a policy goal may face potential disadvantages on the complex geopolitical chessboard. \nFor the past year\, GEF – with the support of its partners – has been exploring the possible geopolitical consequences of a post-growth Europe. This launch event will highlight the importance of this topic\, delve into some of our main findings and recommendations\, and spotlight the Spanish translation of the resulting report. With our panel of experts\, we will reflect on the difficult challenge ahead for Europe\, standing at the crossroads of navigating a substantial environmental and climate crisis while concurrently surviving in a  progressively intricate geopolitical landscape. \n  \nProject background\nThis event is part of GEF’s project Geopolitics of a Post-Growth Europe\, which explores the tensions between degrowth/post-growth and geopolitics. The project aims to ignite a conversation between critics of economic growth and progressive thinkers on foreign and security policy\, who now often operate in separate circuits. It aims to find solutions beyond naïve anti-militarism and convenient belief in green growth. Find out more about the project and its findings at geopoliticspostgrowth.eu. \n  \nSpeakers\n\nGaya Herrington – Research and econometrician. Author of ‘Update to Limits to Growth.’\nJesús A. Núñez – Geopolitical expert. Co-director of IECAH (Institute of Studies on Conflicts and Humanitarian Action)\nRichard Wouters – Think tanker at Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks. Coordinator and co-author of Geopolitics of a Post-Growth Europe.\n\nModerated by Lourdes Lucía\, lawyer and publisher. \n  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: Thursday\, February 8th at 17:30 CEST \nLanguage: Spanish and English (simultaneous translation will be provided) \nLocation: Online\, via Zoom. \nRegistration: Please register in advance via this link in order to receive the Zoom details. \n  \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Fundación Transición Verde\, and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Sources of Rest: Sustainable Tourism in Serbia (Belgrade)
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nThe development of tourism is an important aspect of the economic activities of a country because it enables the inflow of foreign capital\, economic growth\, and job creation. It also holds invaluable opportunities for exchange and understanding between and beyond the citizens of Europe. However\, inadequate development and implementation of tourism plans can make it impossible to use its potential in an adequate way. The business and development of this economic branch\, especially in less developed countries\, generally has disastrous consequences for the environment and the local community. The development of mass tourism in popular locations leads to the mass exploitation of natural resources and their destruction\, while most of the income goes to the owners of large hotel chains and companies at the expense of the local community\, which is mostly engaged in seasonal work.  \nSerbia is a country that has many natural beauties and a huge tourist potential\, but that potential must not become an object of exploitation. In order to prevent this scenario\, it is necessary to adopt adequate plans and strategies\, and for that it is important to organize discussions and hear the opinion of not only experts and the civil sector\, but local communities\, which are the most important element of tourism development planning and whose opinion is generally the least heard. In this panel discussion\, we will discuss the findings of such local discussions in the Stara Planina region and reflect more broadly on what the future could hold for fair and carbon-free tourism in Serbia.  \nContext\nThis event is part of GEF’s Fair and Carbon Free Tourism project\, which aims to identify and create conditions for collective action against detrimental social and environmental impacts of tourism. By engaging stakeholders in partner countries and developing a European transnational discussion on these challenges\, we seek to build a community interested to transform this sector in the direction of low or zero carbon intensity and with a specific focus on social and economic justice.  \nSpeakers\nKatarina Lević – MA in Political Sciences and PolEkol researcher\, who studied spa tourism and tourism on Stara Planina  \nNataša Gligorijević – Director of the Center for Sustainable Development of Serbia  \nMilan Zlatanović\, MA in Political Sciences and PolEkol researcher\, who studied tourism on Stara Planina   \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: Saturday\, December 17th at 17:00  \nLocation: Cafe Bar 16\, Cetinjska 15a\, Belgrade\, Serbia  \nLanguage: Serbian  \nRegistration: No advance registration is necessary\, but you can join our facebook event for the latest updates.   \n\nThis event is organized by the Green European Foundation with the support of PolEkol and with the financial support of the European parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:"Just Transition For A Better World" Book Launch (London)
DESCRIPTION:Context\nThis event is organized by the Green European Foundation (GEF) with the support of Green House Think Tank as part of the transnational GEF Just Transition project. \nThis project tackles the question of a Just Transition – transforming from an extractive to a regenerative economy in a just and equitable way to find the necessary support among the population. It seeks to show that the green family\, including GEF in its specific role\, is a leading actor in the development of futureproof politics and policies\, developed in a sensitive way that keeps in mind local specificities. \n\nAbout the event \nAs we argue in this book\, a just transition requires a new social contract. A new contract for Europe – this time a social–ecological contract – can only be written from a global perspective\, taking into account human rights and respect for nature worldwide. At the same time\, this major transformation will need to be very context specific. The event will feature chapter authors introducing the concept of just transition\, describing the Spanish experience\, sectoral initiatives in agriculture and aviation\, and the role of youth and climate justice movements. \n\nSpeakers\nChair: Natalie Bennett\, former Green Party leader \n\nDirk Holemans\, coordinator of Think Tank Oikos & Co-President of GEF\nJoaquin Nieto\, Former Director of the ILO Office for Spain\nAnne Chapman\, Green House Think Tank\nSean Currie\, co-Spokesperson for the Federation of Young European Greens\n\n\nPracticalities\nDate: Tuesday 20th September \nTime: Doors and drinks served from 17:00 \nEvent starts at 18:00 and ends at 20:00 \nLocation: Bookmarks bookshop\, 1 Bloomsbury Street\, London WC1B 3QE \nRegistration: Sign up here \n  \nAdditional Reading\nJust Transition Is About Systemic Change \nJust Transition Time for a Rethink \nCoronavirus Recovery and Just Transition in Spain: A Unique Opportunity \n“We should approach this transition as an opportunity”: An interview with Adam Tooze \n  \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Green House think tank and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. SUMMARY:'A European Just Transition for a Better World' Book presentation (Brussels)
DESCRIPTION:Context\nThis event is organized by the Green European Foundation with the support of Oikos Think Tank and Member of European Parliament Sara Matthieu\, to present the book on Just Transition\, published within the GEF project Just Transition. \nThis transnational project tackles the question of a Just Transition – transforming from an extractive to a regenerative economy in a just and equitable way to find the necessary support among the population. It seeks to show that the green family\, including GEF in its specific role\, is a leading actor in the development of futureproof politics and policies\, developed in a sensitive way that keeps in mind local specificities. \nAbout the event \nAs we argue in this book\, a just transition requires a new social contract. A new contract for Europe – this time a social–ecological contract – can only be written from a global perspective\, taking into account human rights and respect for nature worldwide. At the same time\, this major transformation will need to be very context specific. The differences between European regions are enormous\, not least in terms of income disparity between and within countries. So\, too\, are the financial\, innovative and structural capacities to shape and implement the transformative changes that are needed. From these perspectives\, we critically appreciate the European Commission’s Green Deal. \nThis and more will be discussed this evening. \nSpeakers\n\nSara Matthieu\, Member of European Parliament (Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance)\nDirk Holemans\, coordinator of Think Tank Oikos & Co-President of GEF\nJoaquin Nieto\, Former Director of the ILO Office for Spain\nAnne Chapman\, Green House Think Tank\nPhilippe Pochet\, General Director of the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI)\nModerator: Annabelle Van Nieuwenhuyse\n\nPracticalities:\nDate: 11th May \nTime: Doors open at 19:45h \nEvent starts at 20:00h and event ends at 21:30h\, including a drink \nLocation: Zilverenzaal/Foyer en dakterras\, Beursschouwburg Brussels (20 – 28 Rue Auguste Orts\, 1000 Brussels). \nRegistrations: Registrations are open << \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Oikos think tank and Member of the European Parliament Sara Matthieu and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. SUMMARY:Practicing Food Sovereignty in the Climate Emergency
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nGEF\, with the support of Green Foundation Ireland and Cultivate\, has built on our 2020 publication ‘A Question of SCALE’ and the findings of a webinar held in June 2021 to produce a new pamphlet: ‘Food Sovereignty\, Climate Action and Local Resilience.’ \nThis launch event will include conversations with leading Irish and European advocates of regenerative agriculture\, rural regeneration\, and sustainability. Drawing from the pamphlet\, it will explore how we might take climate action and strengthen the resilience and wellbeing of our local places through the practice of food sovereignty. \nContext\nThis webinar is part of the project Climate Emergency Economy–organised by GEF with the support of Green House Think Tank\, Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks\, Green Foundation Ireland\, and the Foundation for Environment and Agriculture. The project explores policies required in ‘hard-to-reach’ sectors for Europe to reach zero carbon. In 2021\, activities are centred around three key pillars: agriculture\, hydrogen\, and transport infrastructure and trade. \nSpeakers\n\nThomas Waitz – Austrian MEP (Greens/EFA)\, ecological farmer and forester\nEwa Sufin-Jacquemart – Director of the Green Polish foundation “Strefa Zieleni”  \nJudith Hitchman – Food sovereignty activist and president of Urgenci\, the global Community Supported Agriculture network \nMike Small – Scottish freelance writer\, journalist\, author and publisher.  He worked in the Fife district of Scotland to develop new models of organizing around local food that culminated in a book titled Scotland’s Local Food Revolution. \nLisa Fingleton – Artist\, grower\, writer and filmmaker based on an organic farm on the Wild Atlantic Way in Ireland. Her book The Local Food Project explores the power of growing and eating local food. \nBridget Murphy – Regenerative hill farmer based in County Sligo and Core Group member of Talamh Beo\, an alliance of farmers\, growers and land-workers on the island of Ireland. \nModerated by Davie Philip (Cultivate / ECOLISE.eu) \n\nPracticalities\nThis webinar will be taking place via Zoom\, in English. As always\, there will be an interactive Q&A section which will allow full participation by those attending.  \nPlease register in advance via this link. Contact info@greenfoundationireland.ie with any further questions.  \n\nThis project is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Green Foundation Ireland and Cultivate\, with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.  \n

SUMMARY:Dark shades of green: The political struggle for the narrative of the young environmental movements in the Western Balkans
DESCRIPTION:About this event\nThe right-wing has for a long time been associated with climate denial and justifications of industrial pollution. However\, this rhetoric seems to be changing\, and environmental issues are becoming central to right-wing politics. In the Western Balkans\, environmental problems are emerging as a mobilizing factor across different political actors and social movements. Issues that are traditionally claimed by the progressive greens\, are now coming into focus of the populist right\, opening new fields for reaching and engaging otherwise passive citizens. Driven by the unsustainable re-industrialization\, the growth in the construction sector\, and new\, often foreign investments in mining\, fossil fuels\, land grabs and destruction of nature\, environmental threats are ever more mobilizing the citizens on the anti-establishment wave. Catching sight of the loss of the EU perspective and the increased post-truth crisis during the pandemic conditions\, the right wing is not missing their chance. The struggle for nature is often painted with nationalist and traditionalist narratives. \nOn the other hand\, the greens nor the left do not seem to be keeping pace with these developments\, appearing unfit to offer credible alternatives to the populist narratives of the local grassroots movements. The environmental civil society initiatives\, and the social justice and human rights organizations\, are not connected enough\, and their knowledge and experiences are atomized. In addition\, many actors are insisting that the environment is intrinsically an “apolitical” issue\, accusing each other of “hijacking” it. These processes are not only happening in the Western Balkans\, however there is an important specific context related to the recent history and genealogy of the green movement. In the context of a blurred EU perspective for the Western Balkans\, and in the absence of strong green and left alternatives\, will the right wing populism succeed in appropriating the topic of environmental justice? How can the progressive forces be enabled to take the lead in environmental struggles? \nThe discussion is opening one of the important questions of many about the future of green politics in Europe. We are happy to use this opportunity to present Serbian translations of the publications with extended analysis of political ecology from the greens perspective – the Green European Journal editions: A World Alive: Green Politics in Europe and Beyond and 2049: Open Future. \n  \nSpeakers:\nBalša Lubarda is an environmental sociologist specializing in environmental communication\, radicalism\, right-wing politics and political ideologies. He is also a Doctoral Fellow and the Head of Ideology Research Unit at the Centre for Analysis of the Radical Right\, as well as a member of the Emancipatory Rural Politics Initiative (European branch). His research has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as Environmental Values\, Sociologia Ruralis and other non-academic outlets\, including New Eastern Europe\, Fair Observer\, Open Democracy\, Undisciplined Environments\, Altre Economia etc. Balša has also provided commentary for The BBC Radio 4 and The New York Times. \nDamir Zejnulahović is a PhD student of sociology at the Faculty of Philosophy of Belgrade University. He completed his undergraduate studies of sociology at the same faculty\, where he took courses in “Culture” and “Politics” modules during his undergraduate studies. He got his Master degree in sociology\, at the same faculty\, defending his master thesis „Ideological underpinnings of a conservative Srpski pokret Dveri”. The focus of his research interests are political sociology\, sociology of knowledge\, historical sociology\, critique of ideology. \nIva Marković is an environmental activist and researcher in political ecology from Belgrade. Her current focus is on water as a common good and on developing alternative policies for sustainable governing of natural wealth. Her interests are in commons\, natural resources management\, social impact of climate change\, degrowth\, just energy transition and ecofeminism. She is involved in organizing left and green actors and networking inside the environmental movement. She is a co-founder of Right to Water (Pravo na vodu) initiative\, organization for political ecology Polekol\, Women For Environment network\, and active in the Save the Blue Heart of Europe campaign against small hydro projects in the Balkans. \n  \nModerator: Aleksandra Tomanić (tbc) \n  \n  \nPracticalities:\nThis event takes place on Zoom\, please register and join via this link. \nSimultaneous interpretation Serbian – English will be provided for this event.

SUMMARY:Understanding growth in different ways – the implications of transcending the growth paradigm in Europe
DESCRIPTION:About this event\nFor the launch of the Ten thoughts on Growth report\, written by the economist and environmental researcher Mikael Malmaeus and published by GEF and Cogito\, we will be holding a webinar to discuss the concept of growth from different angles. When the vaccine has reached out in society we can expect a recovery of the economy. The European Green Deal is one of many initiatives on how we are to invest to come to a green recovery\, but will we keep within planetary boundaries? \nThe discussion around sustainability and growth often ends up in confusion and locked positions. The purpose of this report is to clarify where we should reach consensus\, and where we have the essential lines of conflicts in our thoughts on growth. \n  \nSpeakers\n\nMikael Malmaeus – Author of the report\, board member in Cogito and researcher at The Swedish Environmental Research Institute\nKlas Eklund – Senior Economist and author with a background as a Chief Economist of SEB. 2001-2010 he was a member of the European Commission’s Group of Economic Policy Analysis. He has written several books on economic growth and sustainability\nMagda Rasmusson – economist and political expert with the minister of financial markets and former spokesperson for the Young Greens in Sweden\n\n  \nModerator\n\nMaria Wetterstrand – CEO of Milton Europe in Brussels\, opinion leader on environment and policy\, former leader of the Green Party Sweden\n\n  \nPracticalities\nWhen? Wednesday March 24th 18.00-19.00 \nWhere?  https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89869853908 \n\nLanguage\nPlease note this webinar will be in Swedish language only

SUMMARY:European Positions on Unconditional Basic Income
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nBarbara Prainsack’s new book on an Unconditional Basic Income “Vom Wert des Menschen” has received a lot of attention in recent weeks. At a time when many people have lost their jobs and the economic outlook is uncertain\, an unconditional basic income (UBI) sounds tempting. The Green European Foundation\, with the support of its Austria partner FREDA\, has invited Barbara Prainsack to discuss her thoughts and basic theses with us. \nIn order to delve even deeper into the topic\, we want to bring further perspectives to the table: Sabine Jungwirth (Federal Spokesperson Green Economy) brings her economic expertise and Barbara Huemer (Green Spokesperson for Women\, Work\, Employment\, Human Resources\, Science\, Research & Development) shares her experiences. \nEuropean perspectives will be provided by Antje Schrupp from Germany\, who has been dealing with the feminist aspects of a UBI for years\, and by Francois Denuit\, researcher and staff member of the European Parliament with a focus on an EU-wide UBI. \nContext:\nAfter gathering comprehensive expertise and setting up transnational networks through a three-year long project on universal basic income\, GEF and its partners continue building on the outputs and successes of this work on the topic. \nThe transnational project ‘Change of Mindset – UBI\, Climate and Social Change’ seeks to spark a stronger civil society dialogue to bring about the change of mindset needed to raise acceptance of universal basic income among the public and to deepen the debate on our conceptions of productivity and work. Together\, we dive \ninto the exploration of UBI as a tool of the urgently needed ecological transition and part of social security in a (post-)pandemic\, climate change world. \nSpeakers:\n\nBarbara Prainsack – author of “Vom Wert des Menschen” (Austria)\nSabine Jungwirth – Federal Spokesperson Green Economy (Austria)\nBarbara Huemer – Green Spokesperson for Women\, Work\, Employment\, Human Resources\, Science\, Research & Development (Austria)\nAntje Schrupp – journalist and political scientist (Germany)\nFrancois Denuit – researcher and staff member at the European Parliament (Belgium)\n\nModeration by Carlotta Weber (Strategy Manager at the Green European Foundation) \nProgramme:\n19:00 – 19:10 Onboarding & Welcome (00:10) \n19:10 – 19:20 Reading/Presentation by Barbara Prainsack (00:10) \n19:20 – 20:10 Panel discussion \n20:10 – 20:20 Input by Francois Denuit \n20:20 – 20:30 Panel discussion \n20:30 – 20:45 Audience Q&A (optional) \nPracticalities:\nThis event will take place primarily in German. \nThe event will be streamed live on YouTube\, please tune in here.

SUMMARY:Just Transition (Kickoff)
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nTo introduce the concept of Just Transition to a wider audience\, Oikos and the Green European Foundation invite Béla Galgóczi\, senior researcher at ETUI (European Trade Union Institute). In this online interview\, Béla will explain to us what Just Transition really means\, and which currents and recent developments there are. He will also give some concrete examples from the world of work. \nContext:\nThe Just Transition project has as its aim to inspire and inform citizens about the implications of a just transition to a highly sustainable economy\, which involves more than technical measures. We need a new economic system that cares for people and the planet\, in which all costs and benefits are fairly distributed. How do we sustainably transform our labour market? How do we make sure the transition to renewables is inclusive and equitable? These are some of the questions we try to answer. \nSpeakers:\nBéla Galgóczi\, ETUI (European Trade Union Institute) \nInterviewer: Dirk Holemans (Oikos) \nPracticalities:\nThis is an open webinar. Please register here to receive an event reminder and further details on how to join in. \n  \n— \nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Oikos Think Tank and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Green it!
DESCRIPTION:we are launching our first ever crowdfunding campaign and we want you to be part of it! We will raise 5000 Euro to kickstart Green it!\, an online platform\, which will serve as a database of green experts and training resources.  \nOur idea is simple: we will start with an online platform to make available training materials and resources\, as well as allow for the recognition of those trainers who use sustainable\, inclusive and forward-thinking methods in their work.   \nWe are on a mission to improve the quality of green training all around Europe and we need you!   \nWith the generous support of our community\, we raised over 10% of the target in the first hours of the campaign. Now we rely on you to help us make Green it! happen.    \nEvery contribution helps – the number of people donating is important. If you can give 10 euros\, that’s another demonstration of interest\, likely to encourage another person to follow you. But if you’re able to give more\, that’s brilliant\, and gets us closer to the goal.  \nWe simply cannot do this without you.

SUMMARY:Greens in Government
DESCRIPTION:The Alliance 90/The Greens Party has succeeded in taking over governmental responsibility in the majority of the 16 federal states. This is a great success for the party. However\, in order to remain successful and to encourage general confidence in politics\, a sober look at the factors which led to the success and which will continue to do so in the future is required. How does good governance work? How does government participation change the decision-making processes and the political objectives of a party? How does good cooperation between those responsible in federal and state government function?\n\nParting from the experience of German Greens in coalition governments\, we had a discussion with representatives of different Green parties with hands-on government experience. You can watch the entire event in English on demand here.\n\n\nSpeakers:\n\nArne Jungjohann\, Energy Analyst & Political Scientist\, author of “Greens in Government”\nChristine Milne\, former Australian Senator & leader of the Australian Greens\nGustav Fridolin\, Minister of Education Sweden\, Swedish Green Party Co-spokesperson\nModeration: Marta Loja Neves\, Editorial Board\, Green European Journal\n\n\nWhen: Friday\, 31 March 2017\, 18:30 – 20:00\n\nWhere: Room 4A\, Global Greens & European Greens Congress\, Arena and Convention Centre\, room 4A\, Kings Dock\, Liverpool L3 4FP\, United Kingdom
