SUMMARY:Transformative pathways for tourism in post-pandemic Europe
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nThis webinar will offer space for debate among various academic and political organisations across Europe on the sustainability of tourism and the influences the COVID-19 pandemic has had on this sector. This will be an opportunity to share experiences and be inspired by the practices of others. Some of the research findings from the project will be presented but also expanded to a broader debate with engaged scholars and researchers. \nContext:\nThis event is part of the Green European Foundation’s Fair and Carbon Free Tourism transnational project. The project aims to identify and create conditions for collective action against the detrimental social and environmental impacts of tourism. In many countries\, tourism is a generator of GDP and fully employed in a growth-oriented consumerist economy. However\, there is an underestimated environmental and social impact of tourism. \nThe impacts of tourism-induced economic activities are often underestimated\, and while social impacts are increasingly being considered in some of the tourist hubs of the project partners’ countries\, for instance in Barcelona\, Dubrovnik\, Salzburg\, or Ohrid\, environmental impacts\, in particular\, are often not (yet) addressed. \nSpeakers:\n\nRobert Fletcher\, Waegeningen University\nFilka Sekulova\, University of Barcelona\nNikolina Rajković\, Institute for Political Ecology\nClaus Mersch\, FREDA (tbc)\n\nModerated by: Vedran Horvat\, Institute for Political Ecology \nProgramme: \n17:00 – 17.10 Introduction: Vedran Horvat\, IPE \n17:10 – 17.25 Robert Fletcher\, Waegeningen University \n17:25 – 17:40 Filka Sekulova\, University of Barcelona \n17:40 – 17.55 Nikolina Rajković\, Institute for Political Ecology \n17.55 – 18.10 Claus Mersch\, FREDA (tbc) \n18:10 – 18.30 Discussion \nPracticalities:\nMonday\, 7 December\, 17:00-18:30 \nThis is an online event\, please join us here via Zoom. \nThe event will take place in English. \n—- \nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of the Institute for Political Ecology and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation

SUMMARY:Towards a Fair and Low Carbon Tourism: Perspectives from Spain
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nTourism has positioned itself as one of the main engines of the Spanish economy\, but the current crisis of COVID-19 – as the economic crisis of 2008 did before – has shown the fragility of the sector and has called into question the high dependence of the GDP on this activity. The pandemic should serve as an opportunity to seek alternatives to make tourism resilient to new economic\, health and climate crises. \nTourism is also a sector that not only produces serious climatic and environmental impacts but these\, in turn\, affect it negatively. Water shortages\, reduced climatic comfort\, the loss of beaches or an increase in extreme weather events are some of the effects of global warming with direct consequences on tourism activity and which can seriously compromise its viability. \nWe should take advantage of the lessons learned during the pandemic to rethink a paradigm shift\, a shift towards a fair\, low-carbon tourism model that is prepared to face the major climate\, economic and social challenges of our time and that is sustainable in the long term. Are we prepared for this? \nContext:\nThis event is part of the Green European Foundation’s Fair and Carbon Free Tourism transnational project. This project aims to identify and create conditions for collective action against the detrimental social and environmental impacts of tourism. In many countries\, tourism is a generator of GDP and fully employed in a growth oriented consumerist economy. However\, there is an underestimated environmental and social impact of tourism. \nSpeakers: \n\nJavier Benayas: Professor of Ecology at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) and member of the Advisory Council of the Spanish Network for Sustainable Development. Town Planning and Sustainability Councilor in Soto del Real (Madrid).\nKarima Delli: French MEP from the Greens/EFA group. Chair of the Committee on Transport and Tourism. In 2016 she was appointed vice-chair of the Commission of Inquiry into the Measurement of Emissions from Cars (the so-called Dieselgate).\nAurora Pedro Bueno: Director of the New Green Transition Chair at the University of Valencia. Consultant for the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) since the mid-1990s and author of several publications on Tourism topics.\n\nModerator: Rosa M. Tristán\, environmental and scientific journalist with 30 years of professional experience in different media (El Mundo\, El HuffPost\, El País\, Público\, RNE\, …). \nPracticalities:\nThursday\, 3 December\, 18:00-19:30 \nThis is an online event\, please register in advance via this link. \nSimultaneous Spanish-English translation will be available. \n—- \nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Fundación Transición Verde and with the financial support of the European parliament to the Green European Foundation

SUMMARY:How can we drastically reduce CO2 emissions in the EU and eradicate poverty?
DESCRIPTION:Context:\nThe Covid-19 crisis has only enhanced the social crises: decreasing wages\, increased inequalities and union busting. \nContrary to public belief\, the Covid-19 induced economic crisis is not an exogenous crisis to our economic system. Covid19 is a deeply endogenous crisis of our world capitalistic system. It has exposed the failures of underfinanced social and health systems that are the result of decades of austerity policies and privatisation. Zoonotic viruses that “jump” from animals to humans are increasing due to the destruction of the last areas of wilderness. Houses\, streets\, agricultural areas\, all are invading formerly untouched nature. \nOur current system exploits both: people and nature. Only a radical change in the human-nature metabolism can stop the ongoing climate catastrophe. Only a radical change in the social and economic policy can stop the wave of poverty we are facing. We thus need to solve both: the climate and the social crisis in one stroke. \nHence\, the climate crisis and the necessity to exist inside the planetary boundaries are the main challenge of the current generations. What is equally clear is that workers and common citizens must be in the centre of the necessary socio-ecological transformation. We have to build a much better economy now. \nWe need to act now\, and indeed: we have started to transform our economies. The European Commission has presented its Green Deal on 11th December 2019 and currently the EU is negotiating the historic ‘Recovery Plan’. The member states have also reacted to the immediate Covid19 induced economic crisis as well as to the long-term climate crisis. \nAbout the event:\nIn our common seminar\, we want to share our analysis of the Covid-19 and climate crisis and discuss possible solutions and propose alternative ways forward. We want to continue our dialogue on our understanding of the necessary socio-ecological transformation of our societies. \nSpeakers:\nSpeakers for the Green European Foundation (GEF): \n\nPolitical introduction: Aurélie Maréchal (Political Director GEF)\nSpeaker: Councillor Jonathan Essex (Green House Think Tank\, United Kingdom)\n\nSpeakers for the Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS): \n\nPolitical introduction: Uwe Optenhögel (Vice-President FEPS)\nSpeaker: Saïd El Khadraoui (Special Adviser FEPS\, Belgium)\n\nSpeakers for transform! europe: \n\nPolitical introduction: Cornelia Hildebrandt (Co-President transform! europe)\nSpeaker: Manuela Kropp (Project Manager Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung\, Brussels)\n\nThe event will be hosted by Marga Ferré (Co-President transform! europe) \nPracticalities:\nThe event will take place in English & French. \nRegistration Link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUsdOmtqz0uHtAcuu9R1CeAGwuUAd-3lgyx

SUMMARY:Greening COP26: an Online Hub for Climate
DESCRIPTION:CONTEXT\nWith the COVID-19 pandemic and particularly the economic recovery of this crisis dominating the public discourse\, as well as the postponement of COP26 in Glasgow by a year to November 2021\, the need to fight climate change has seemingly lost priority on the political agenda. Although the ongoing pandemic is closely linked to the destruction of our environment and biodiversity\, initial declarations by the UK government and others\, declaring 2020 as the “year of climate action” have clearly been downscaled which could have dramatic effects for our planet. \nThe following months will be crucial to ensure public awareness that urgent climate action is needed and that the recovery of our societies and economies must be a green recovery in all its aspects. \nThe Green European Foundation and the European Green Party are therefore organising “Greening COP26. An online hub for climate” to provide a space for the green ecosystem to keep up the momentum within the movement and to strengthen the connections that were already built – between green actors from different levels as well as between green actors and CSOs. \nPROGRAMME\nDay 1: Greening COP26 Kick off \nFriday\, 20 November\, 14-17h CET \nThe first day of the online Green Climate Hub will be held on the day that would have been the original last day of COP26 with a concluding statement/agreement from governments. We will hence use the day to kick off this virtual hub for the green movement to come together and work towards Greening COP26. What are the priorities we will be setting? What do we expect as outcomes of COP26 and what do we realistically expect to happen? \n\n14h00-14h30 Opening of the Climate Hub \n\nDirk Holemans\, GEF Co-President\, and Thomas Waitz\, EGP Co-Chair and Member of European Parliament \n\n14h30-17h00 Introduction to the hub functionalities and networking\n\n  \nDay 2: The Struggle for Climate Equality \nFriday\, 27 November\, 10-13h CET \nAlthough driven by natural and physical systems that are changing our planet\, it is also clear that climate change will bring with it impacts on our social and economic systems as well as exacerbate already existing inequalities. In particular\, the gap between the global North and South and the increased negative impacts already being felt by indigenous communities\, women and people of color must be addressed. Existing problems\, like migration\, conflict and wealth inequality will be worsened by the impacts of climate change. Our global private and public finance systems are driving the climate crisis and investing our money in the wrong future.  \nHow can these problems be addressed? What do we need to consider in our fight for a sustainable and equitable future? How can or will the international climate discussions reflect these issues? \n\n10h00-11h00 Environmental (im)mobility: This workshop will explore the detrimental impacts of climate change and environmental degradation on the movement of people and will discuss different notions of climate migration with Dr Caroline Zickgraf\, Deputy Director of the HUGO Observatory for Environment\, Migration and Politics.\n11h00-12h00 The struggle for Amazonas: We are proud to feature a workshop by the Fridays For Future international youth team SOS Amazonia. In this workshop activists from the Fridays For Future movement give an overview of the situation in the Amazon\, the effects the EU-Mercosur free trade agreement would have on it and the solutions that scientists propose to save this crucial ecosystem\n\nDay 3: 5 years after Paris – Walking the Talk? \nFriday\, 11 December\, as of 11h CET \nSo what is next for us? Marking the 5th anniversary of the Paris Agreement (on the 12th December 2020)\, and at the same time in the expectation that the European Council (on the 11th December) will make its final decision on the EU climate law\, this day marks an important milestone of progress for global and European climate action thus far. \nBut we know that there is still much work left and time is running out. The impacts of climate change are already being felt\, and as we continue to battle the corona crisis\, it is more important than ever that we look towards building the sustainable and just future we want to see. Youth movements and activists have not only been leading the push for action now\, but as the generation that will bear the brunt of the climate crisis\, their vision of the future is more important than ever. We can build on the best practices\, innovations\, and visions that are already being fought for around the world. Greens\, civil society\, activists and others must come together to shape a better tomorrow. \n\n11h00-12h00 Networking\n12h00-13h30 Panel discussion: Five years after Paris – what’s next?\n\nSpeakers: Francois Gemenne\, Timothée Parrique\, Leonore Gewessler\, Mina Tolu\, Molly Scott Cato \nModeration: Lisa Tostado\, hbs EU Head of International Climate\, Energy and Agricultural Policy) \n\nAs of 14h00: sessions organised with MOCK COP and Glasgow Agreement\n\n  \nThe hub will be hosted on GEF’s SpotMe platform. Sign up here.

SUMMARY:European Mobility in the context of Covid-19: Keeping the green steering wheel steady?
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThe challenges related to a sustainable transition of the European mobility sector were already manifold before the Covid-19 pandemic hit. Motorised mass transport has reached its limits\, mass tourism has massive ecological and social impacts\, and EU governments have not been acting fast enough to re-direct investments from a carbon-intensive transport sector to more climate-friendly means of transports\, e.g. trans-European railways. \nMeasures to contain the spread of the virus have brought international transport and travel to periods of a near standstill in 2020. In their attempt to prevent a collapse of entire industries and subsequent mass unemployment\, many governments had to bail out airline companies. At the same time\, huge investments to re-stabilise the current automobile and airline industry are counterproductive to the European Commission’s aim of ‘accelerating the shift to sustainable and smart mobility’ as part of the European Green Deal. \nWith their joint online event the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung European Union and the Green European Foundation would like to examine the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on European mobility. How can the EU ensure uninterrupted transport and supply chains\, e.g. for medical equipment? What will be the opportunities and challenges of a progressing digitisation of European transport? How will the pandemic shape the future of free movement within the EU? What should international tourism look like in a post-Covid-19 world? How can a just transition of the mobility sector contribute to ambitious climate targets? \nSpeakers:\nGeorges Gilkinet\, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Mobility and the National Railway Company\, Belgian Federal Government \nMatthew Baldwin\, Deputy Director-General\, Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport (DG MOVE)\, European Commission \nAnnika Degen\, Director of EU Office Verband deutscher Verkehrsunternehmen (VDV) \nModerator: Martin Keim\, Head of Programme – European Energy Transition\, Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung European Union \n——- \nThe event will be live-streamed on Facebook and YouTube.

SUMMARY:The impacts of Covid-19 on the Western Balkans and the region’s political future
DESCRIPTION:Context:\nThe COVID-19 pandemic not only hit the Western Balkan countries in a period of reacceleration of economic activity and put enormous pressure on the already fragile health systems in place\, but also had a negative impact on the state of democracy in the region. In response to the outbreak of the virus\, some governments relapsed into authoritarian tendencies increasing censorships and restricting the free flow of information. Cases of arbitrary arrest\, surveillance\, phone tapping\, privacy breaches and other digital rights violations during imposed emergency legislation have become an increasing concern. \nFurthermore\, many experts suggest that the crisis has seriously hampered the EU’s influence in the region. Even though it finally mobilised a financial package amounting to 3.3 billion Euro to fight Covid-19 and its impact in the Western Balkans\, the EU’s image in those countries deteriorated due to the initial lack of solidarity and hesitant response towards its neighbours in South-East Europe. Other global players such as China and Russia have been fast in offering assistance and investment to increase their own influence in the region. Often\, their economic support goes hand in hand with campaigns to foster alternative narratives and populist sentiments. \nHence\, with their joint online event\, the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung European Union and the Green European Foundation would like to address with the invited panellists what the latest developments amidst this crisis mean for the Western Balkans societies and what the implications for the region’s political future might be. What are the major impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on the Western Balkans? How have the governments in the region handled the crisis so far? And\, is it necessary for the EU to change its approach to the Western Balkans as reluctant and desultory commitments in the accession process are wearing out the EU’s good image in the region? \nSpeakers:\n\nLejla Gačanica\, Independent legal counsel and researcher\, Bosnia and Herzegovina\nLiljana Popovska\, former MP in the Macedonian Parliament and leader of Democratic Renewal of Macedonia (DOM)\, board member of the Green Institute\, North Macedonia\nAndrej Petrovski\, Director of Tech/CERT at SHARE Foundation\, Serbia\n\nModerator: \nSimon Ilse\, Office Director\, Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung Serbia\, Montenegro & Kosovo \n——- \nThe event will be live-streamed on Facebook and YouTube.

SUMMARY:Women* in Power
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nIn every country in every continent\, women are fighting on a global scale to end sexism\, sexist exploitation and oppression. They make their voices heard from the streets to parliament fighting for a world with gender equality\, freedom and free from oppression. \nWe support freedom of sexual orientation\, gender identity\, gender expression and sex characteristics within the framework of gender equality and feminism. We support women who fight to exist in a very patriarchal political scene and who create space for women in politics. Therefore\, the Green European Foundation with the support of Green Thought Association are organising this conference that brings activists\, politicians and academics from different countries together to share their experiences\, to show solidarity with each other and to network. \nContext:\nThis event is part of the GEF project “Gender Equality and Green Politics\,” organised with the support of Green Thought Association. Over the past few months\, we have regularly been gathering a group of Turkish activists\, academics\, and others to learn about and discuss issues of gender equality and feminism through a green lens. The conference builds on and is a culmination of some of these seminars\, engaging a broader audience and connecting the conversation in Turkey with that across Europe and beyond. \nSpeakers:\n\nTerry Reintke\, MEP Greens/EFA – via video message\nMałgorzata Tracz\, MP and co-leader of the Polish Greens\nHelena Gualinga\, Indigenous environmental and human rights activist\nNil Mutluer\, Green Thought Association and Humboldt University Berlin\nSüheyla Dogan\, Kazdağı Association for the Conservation of Natural and Cultural Heritage\nBegum Basdas\, Humboldt University\nDeniz Bayram\, Greenpeace Mediterranean\, Program Director\nGülnur Aksop\, Women’s platform for equality\, EŞİK – Deniz Yildizi Women’s Solidarity Association\n\nModerated by Nil Mutleur\, Green Thought Association and Humboldt University Berlin \nProgramme:\n13:00-15:45 CEST \nWelcome \nSession 1: Global solidarity in the women movement (ENG\, with TUR translation) \n\nTerry Reintke will provide a video opening\, while Nil Mutluer gives some further opening remarks. Then\, Małgorzata Tracz and Helena Gualinga talk about the local struggle in their countries and where it stands in the global feminist movement. The general framework of this session will be provided by Nil Mutluer\, an academic and member of the Green Party in Turkey.\n\nBreak \nSession 2: Women’s struggle in Turkey (TUR\, with ENG translation) \n\nOver the past several months in Turkey\, the feminist agenda has mostly been shaped by the discussions over the Istanbul Convention\, also known as The Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence. Women have been organizing campaigns in order to not lose this Convention. In the second part of the conference\, Begum Basdas will focus on EU policies – with concrete examples from Greece – women and LGBTI + refugees / asylum seekers who are living in crisis conditions. Deniz Bayram will talk about the local ecology struggles and the women’s issue in the climate struggle and Gülnur Aksop will cover latest discussions and feminist movement agenda over the Istanbul Convention. Finally\, Süheyla Dogan will talk about their activities\, women’s struggle\, and the relation to ecological movements.\n\nClosing \nPracticalities:\nThe conference is taking place on the Zoom video-conferencing platform. Please register in advance via this link. The Zoom link will be sent to all registered users.

SUMMARY:Green Transition for Europe
DESCRIPTION:Context:\nCOVID-19 has exposed the shortcomings of our public systems weakened for decades by those same policies that led to the 2008 economic crisis. From the impacts of climate change and the environmental crisis\, there are important lessons for the future to draw: the first is that the global economic system is leaking through many holes that are costly to fix. The second is that living\, as we have done up to now\, against nature is incompatible with survival. Thirdly\, the green transition is unavoidable and urgent\, difficult and not without its sacrifices\, but possible. Let’s make it happen together! \nAbout the Event:\nIn this series of 4 roundtables\, we invite you to reflect\, together with high-level speakers\, researchers\, NGO leaders and politicians on how to seek realistic alternatives. If the green transition is necessary\, as all the environmental and social indicators show\, how can we implement it? \nWe will try to answer some of these questions in our sessions starting early October covering topics such as biodiversity and global change\, decarbonisation\, energy transition\, agri-food systems\, economy and taxation. \nProgramme: \nOctober 8th\nBiodiversity and global change \n\nFernando Valladares\, PhD in Biological Sciences\, research professor at the CSIC (Centre of Scientific Research)\, where he leads the group on Ecology and Global Change\nAndrés Barbosa\, manager of the State Research Agency’s Polar Programme and researcher at the CSIC (Centre of Scientific Research)\n\nModerator: Rosa Martín Tristán\, journalist \nOctober 15th\nDecarbonisation of the economy and energy transition \n\nMarie Toussaint\, jurist and MEP in the Green/EFA Group\nPedro Prieto\, Vice-President of the Spanish Association for the Study of EnergyResources (AEREN)\nGiorgos Kallis\, ecological economist and ICREA Research Professor at ICTA – Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona\n\nModerator: Marta Ojea\, journalist expert on environment and energy \n*Simultaneous translation (English-Spanish) \nOctober 22nd\nPresent and future of the agri-food system \n\nOlivier de Schutter\, co-chair of IPES-Food and UN Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights\nMarta G. SUMMARY:How to Finance Universal Basic Income
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nIn this fourth edition of our UBI webinar series\, tackling both international and Polish questions and dimensions of the topic\, we delve deeper into the question of how to finance a Universal Basic Income. What models exist\, how do they differ\, and what is the financial feasibility of this idea? \nContext:\nThe Green European Foundation has been working and researching the topic of UBI for a few years as part of a transnational project involving many countries. This year\, the project is entitled “CHANGE OF MINDSET. Civil society dialogue around UBI\, social justice and climate impact”. The Polish Green Foundation “Strefa Zieleni” joined the project\, recognising that it was time to start a public debate on this in Poland as well – not only on UBI itself but as part of a broader conversation: what social security system is best adapted to the needs and expectations of Polish society in times of great instability and turmoil? \nThis webinar series aims to foster that debate. We began with international webinars introducing the general concept of UBI\, the European UBI\, and the achievements of the GEF in promoting this debate\, and we discussed UBI pilots in Europe and elsewhere. Then we narrowed down on the Polish perspective and prospects for implementation\, which continues with this webinar on financing. \nSpeakers:\nProf. Monika Kostera – Professor of economy at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow \nRafał Woś – Economic journalist and opinion leader \nModeration and comments by Ewa Sufin-Jacquemart and Wojciech Kłosowski. \nPracticalities:\nThis webinar will take place in Polish. It is open to anyone\, but please register and join using this link.  \nWe will use the Zoom video conferencing platform. It is recommended to join the webinar via a PC. You do not need to install additional software. However\, for the best user experience and full participation features\, we recommend installing the Zoom Desktop App\, which is free.

SUMMARY:Just Transition Learning Lab: Mapping the Movement
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nIf there’s one thing history has shown us\, it’s that there is no point reinventing the wheel – if someone else has a great idea\, steal it and implement it and improve upon it. This applies just as much to activism as everything else – across Europe and the world there are probably thousands of great just transition initiatives happening that could be implemented everywhere. This webinar will help with this issue – using interactive online software you’ll map out some of the best of these initiatives and be able to steal their best ideas. \nThis webinar aims at mapping youth-led initiatives that are leading the process of a just transition across Europe. We will use an interactive digital map to gather and explore input from Young Greens and for the production of the Green Principles for a just transition. \nParticipants will have some dedicated time to explore already mapped initiatives in groups divided based on focus (energy\, transport and food) and discuss with fellow youngsters whether these practices would be fit in their communities or not\, and why. \nWe will also be joined by two or three guest speakers who will share their experience of working on campaigning for a just transition from a youth and activist perspective and the challenges at the policy level. \nContext:\nThis webinar is part of the Green European Foundation’s Just Transition transnational project. The project looks into the question of transforming from an extractive to a regenerative economy in a just and equitable way to find the necessary support among the population. SUMMARY:What future for economic and monetary policy in the EU?
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThis second installment of the joint series “Worldwide Pandemic\, European Responses” will look at the economic consequences of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and how it is shaping monetary and economic policies on the European level. \nThe event will discuss what the latest developments amidst this crisis could mean for the future of the EU. Will we see a further integration with a fiscal union following the monetary union? Or are those just extraordinary measures in extraordinary times\, and the ECB policy will face massive challenges again in the future as suggested by a landmark ruling of Germany’s Constitutional Court in early May? What are the risks and what are the opportunities of the EU directly borrowing money at the financial markets\, which would have to be paid back after the next long-term budget in 2027? What will this debt mean for the actual ‘next generation’ of the EU? Could this be a precedent for future crises to tackle and could an increased economic ‘firepower’ of the Commission revive public approval for the EU and its institutions? \nContext\nThe COVID-19 pandemic has brought life to a standstill across the globe and the resulting halt in production\, interrupted supply chains worldwide\, and a drop in consumption have plunged our economies into a severe crisis. Within the EU\, the countries hardest hit by the pandemic – Italy and Spain – were also among the member states that suffered most under the European debt crisis a decade ago. Immense efforts and support from financially stronger member states will be needed for their recovery. \nTo soften the economic and social fallout of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and after coordination and display of solidarity was initially lacking amidst the crisis\, the European Commission presented its proposal for a major recovery plan\, which includes a recovery fund entitled ‘Next Generation EU’ amounting to 750 billion euro alongside proposals to reinforce the long-term EU budget\, the Multi-Annual Financial Framework 2021-2027\, as well as an adjustment of its own work programme for the year 2020\, prioritising recovery and resilience. Additionally\, the European Central Bank announced in early June that it would boost its emergency support programme by 600 billion euro to 1.35 trillion euro. The support from the ECB comes on top of up to 540 billion euro in financial aid from Eurozone governments that includes credit lines from the euro bailout fund as well as the above-mentioned proposal by the European Commission. \n  \nSpeakers\n\nErnest Urtasun\, Member of the European Parliament Greens/EFA and member of the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee of the European Parliament\nGabriele Michalitsch\, economist & political scientist\, lecturer at Vienna and Klagenfurt University & guest professor in Beijing\, Budapest and Istanbul\nThierry Philipponnat\, Head of research & advocacy at Finance Watch\n\nModeration: Jennifer Baker\, Freelance EU Correspondent \nThe event will be live streamed on Facebook and YouTube.

SUMMARY:Public Health and Societal Resilience: what role for the EU?
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nWhich role will public health spending play within the Next Generation EU budget and the MFF 2021-2027\, and how are those two interlinked? How can the general resilience of the EU and its members be strengthened\, in light of other crises such as the climate crisis? \nContext\nThis pandemic has exposed the fragility of the European Union as it led to uncoordinated\, divergent approaches by the European Union’s member states\, and the timidity of any solidarity between member states has prompted many citizens to question the general purpose of the European Union\, particularly in times of crisis. \nOne of the reasons for the lack of coordination certainly lies in the fact that healthcare remains a competence of the member states. Although the EU’s role should be complementary to the member states’ policies\, taking on a coordination role in the case of serious cross-border health risks\, the individualistic approaches by the EU governments and the lack of information sharing about them made such coordination nearly impossible at the beginning of the pandemic. \nAs most member states are slowly easing lockdown measures with daily infection rates and casualties fortunately decreasing\, the EU seems to slowly find its role in the crisis – having recently unveiled an unprecedented financial package as part of the European Commission’s recovery plan. It is underlined that one of the pillars of this budget will be to learn from the lessons of this crisis and hence rolls out a new Health programme (EU4Health) as well as increased resources for the EU’s disaster response rescEU. \nBack in April\, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen suggested in an interview to combine the green deal climate plan with a “white deal” for healthcare\, coined so subsequently by the media as white is usually the colour associated with healthcare. As the Commission is proposing\, alongside the recovery package\, to reinforce the EU long-term budget 2021-2027 and allow within it more flexibility\, this could potentially mean that a substantial amount is being ring-fenced for healthcare spending. \nSpeakers\n\nPetra de Sutter\, Member of the European Parliament for the Greens/EFA group & Chair of the Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection\nIngrid Keller\, from unit Crisis management and preparedness in health at the European Commission\n\nModerated by: Sarantis Michalopoulos\, Network Editor EurActiv \n  \nThe event will be live streamed on Facebook and Youtube.

SUMMARY:Green Post-Corona Talks with Bram Van Braeckevelt and Robert Fletcher
DESCRIPTION:The COVID-19 crisis has led to closed borders and brought international travel to a halt and thereby dramatically impacted the tourism industry across the world. The International Labour Organisation (ILO) warns that “the impact on tourism enterprises and workers\, the majority being young women\, is unprecedented.” Within the EU\, some of the hardest hit countries by the pandemic\, such as Spain and Italy\, are heavily relying on their tourism industry flourishing. \nAt the same time\, with the almost complete suspension of international air travel\, record low emissions and in many tourist hot spots a partial recovery of the environment (e.g. water quality in Venice) could be observed. \nThe World Tourism Organization launched the campaign #TravelTomorrow earlier this year. While it underlines the importance of tourism as one of the key drivers of international (economic) recovery\, it also aims to highlight the need for a more sustainable approach to international travel as an effort to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. \nWith most inner European borders opening again as of mid-June just in time for the summer holidays\, the question arises whether the COVID-19 crisis can be a second chance for sustainable tourism that considers and tries to reverse the detrimental social and environmental impacts of tourism. Is a real transformation of the industry towards low or zero carbon intensity possible? \n\n\n\nJoin our Facebook event to stay alert for the live stream.\n  \n\n \n\n\nAbout the event\n  \nThe ongoing Covid-19 pandemic is having a grip on societies worldwide and will impact our lives long after the crisis is overcome. It is clear that we cannot continue with “business as usual\,” but that we need to discuss positive ideas and concepts for a better\, greener future and resilient societies now. \nGEF is therefore hosting the Green Post-Corona Talks\, a series of participatory online discussions with high-level experts\, thinkers\, and policy-makers\, and the opportunity for participants to pose their most pressing questions to them live. \nThe talks will highlight what is currently at stake in the Corona crisis but also look beyond the period of the pandemic\, and what possible solutions are already out there and can lend themselves to design the post-corona world. \nThe series will cover different themes from economy\, over migration to gender\, and bring in inspiring perspectives from all across Europe. \nThe project is implemented in cooperation with Oikos. \n\n  \nYou can help us advancing forward-looking green ideas\nto shape the Europe that we want! \n  \nWe rely on your generous contribution to continue putting together new\, exciting Green Post-Corona Talks made extensively available to the general European public! SUMMARY:Green Post-Corona Talks with Özge Kara\, Michael Piccinino\, Adélaïde Charlier\, Jada Kennedy
DESCRIPTION:The talk wants to address intergenerational solidarity in the light of the COVID-19 crisis but also how the pandemic is specifically affecting young people – from implications on their mobility or exercise of rights\, to of course how the economic crisis will especially impact youth unemployment and precarity. \nWith the recovery package recently presented by the von der Leyen Commission being entitled “Next Generation EU”\, the discussion will also shed a light on how the recovery of the EU and its economy can be ensured with without leaving the young generation behind\, and how a more ambitious climate policy must be at the core of that. \n\n\n\nJoin our Facebook event to stay alert for the live stream.\n  \n\n \n\n\nAbout the event\n  \nThe ongoing Covid-19 pandemic is having a grip on societies worldwide and will impact our lives long after the crisis is overcome. SUMMARY:Just Transition: a chance for cooperation between social and environmental movements
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nWith their demand for a Just Transition\, trade unions point out the importance of sufficient and decent jobs. The phase-out or conversion of fossil fuel-based industries requires the creation of new and decent jobs in climate neutral economic activities. This focus on the social dimension of transition has been picked up well in recent years by environmental and climate movements. New forms of cooperation are emerging\, such as in the Netherlands in the context of the Climate Tables and in Belgium around a joint position on the future of aviation. This can strengthen civil society as such\, and in its role of driving the transition to a socio-ecological society. \nIn this second webinar of our Just Transition series\, we will delve further into this topic with two experts from the social and environmental movements. \nContext:\nThe Just Transition project has as its aim to inspire and inform citizens about the implications of a just transition to a highly sustainable economy\, which involves more than technical measures. We need a new economic system that cares for people and the planet\, in which all costs and benefits are fairly distributed. How do we sustainably transform our labour market? How do we make sure the transition to renewables is inclusive and equitable? These are some of the questions we try to answer. \nSpeakers:\nKitty Jong (Director at FNV\, the biggest Dutch labour union federation) \nMathias Bienstman (Policy Coordinator at Bond Beter Leefmilieu\, a Flemish network-organisation facilitating the transition to a more sustainable society and circular economy) \nPracticalities:\nThis is an open webinar. Please register here to receive an event reminder and further details on how to join in. \n  \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Oikos Think Tank and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. SUMMARY:Green-Red Dialogues: Green Answers to the Health and Climate Crisis
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nThe first Green-Red Dialogue will address key issues such as health\, basic income and the economy. \nWhat health model allows us to face possible future pandemics? The European Union is diverse\, and the member states have faced the crisis from different health models\, which have proven to be more effective in this fight against the COVID-18? How can we work to make the health system of the member countries more efficient and inclusive? \nThis is a health crisis that today\, more than ever\, cannot be addressed without taking into account the link with the climate crisis. The model of consumption is linked to agri-food exploitation\, which also causes the deforestation of the planet and in turn has consequences for our health. Should we ignore the fact that the macro animal farms have something to do with the origin of the COVID-19? And what about the air we breathe? How does it influence our health\, our defences\, and the increased vulnerability to severe symptoms of the coronavirus? \nContext:\nThis event is part of the Green Red Dialogues. The main purpose of this series of talks is to reflect on current issues from a green and social perspective. At a time when we have to face the global challenges as a result of COVID-19\, it is important to reflect on a green way out of the crisis. \nSpeakers:\nSka Keller\, Co-President of Greens/EFA in the European Parliament \nJoan Herrera\, lawyer and politician\, former leader of Iniciativa per Catalunya \nModerator: Marc Rius\, Director of Fundació Nous Horitzons \nProgramme: \n18h00 Opening words by Marc Rius \n18h05 Contribution from Ska Keller \n18h20 Contribution from Joan Herrera \n18h35 Q&A \n19h00 Final round of closing words \n19h15 End \nPracticalities:\nThe primary language of the event is Catalan. \nThis event will be livestreamed on the YouTube channel of Fundació Nous Horitzons. \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation\, with the support of Fundació Nous Horitzons and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.
