SUMMARY:Green-Red Dialogue : Adapting and Preparing to Climate Crisis (online)
DESCRIPTION:About the event:\nEcosocialism is not only a theoretical framework for understanding society but also a practical approach to addressing major challenges and finding shared solutions. Several EU countries have experienced significant catastrophes this year\, such as floods in Valencia\, wildfires in Greece\, and droughts in Barcelona. These environmental and social disasters threaten both peace and security. \nThis dialogue seeks to explore how ecosocialist policies can provide responses that mitigate the effects of environmental disasters and promote a fair\, inclusive\, and solidarity-based transition. We aim to identify territorial\, economic\, and social management models necessary to tackle these challenges\, ensuring dignified lives for all while preserving ecosystems. The event will bring together climate change experts\, activists\, and policymakers to share diverse perspectives\, enriching collective reflection and paving the way toward a sustainable and just future. \nProject background:\nGEF’s Green Red Dialogues\, organised with the support of Fundació Nous Horitzons\, aim to tackle pressing issues of our time and the challenges Europe faces with an explicit social and green lens. SUMMARY:Green Perspectives on European Peace and Security
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nAs part of this webinar\, we will analyse various Green perspectives on peace and security currently present at the European level. The webinar is mainly but not only based on a mapping of green policy stances that GEF and its partners are conducting with the support of the think tank GRIP. \nTogether with the panellists\, we will discuss different perspectives present at the regional level\, with a particular focus on prevailing views in Serbia\, Bosnia and Herzegovina\, and Croatia. SUMMARY:Feminists in the Environmental Movement: Training Series
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nBeing a feminist in the environmental movement requires understanding the wider context of the concept as well as having the courage and ability to charge your mental and emotional batteries in order to face the many struggles. SUMMARY:About Degrowth and Geopolitics
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nStopping the climate and ecological crisis would be unlikely as long as our economy continues growing. In fact\, the degrowth movement\, which is rapidly gaining popularity among activists and scientists\, advocates for the deliberate scaling back of overproduction and overconsumption to bring the economy back into balance with the living world in a way that reduces inequality and improves human well-being.\nBut what would a farewell to economic growth mean for geopolitics? Can a European Union that is the first to enter the post-growth era still remain (or become) a global player? Will it be able to defend itself\, its allies\, democracy\, and the international rule of law against aggressive autocrats?\nThe transition to a post-growth society must be a democratic one. But that is far from obvious at a time when authoritarian regimes are invading or threatening their democratic neighbours. \nContext\nThe new transnational project Geopolitics of a post-growth Europe will explore the tensions between degrowth/post-growth and geopolitics. The project aims to ignite a conversation between critics of economic growth and progressive thinkers on foreign and security policy\, who now often operate in separate circuits. What are the points of contention? Can we find or develop commonalities? \nPracticalities\nThe online expert meeting will be moderated by Suzanne Kröger\, MP for GroenLinks\, Netherlands.  \nDate and time: Friday 20 January\, from 10:00 to 12:00 CET  \nLanguage: Dutch  \nAudience: This event is invitation-only.  \nContact: Richard Wouters\, rwouters@groenlinks.nl    \n  \n\nThis project is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. The European Parliament is not responsible for the content of this event.

This event will launch our Rethinking Demand Framing Paper and explore the complexity of the actions needed to reduce our demand for energy as well as the politics involved in doing so.   \nAs the urgency of the need to limit emissions to prevent further climate harm grows\, and the all-encompassing nature of achieving this dawns\, the pivotal role of rethinking how our societies deliver wellbeing for all has become ever more critical. During this conference\, sessions will explore how social and business practices\, infrastructure\, and our governance structures can be transformed to reduce the collective demand for energy and unlock a future without fossil fuels. \nContext\nThis event is part of the GEF transnational project Climate Emergency Economy: Rethinking Demand. Building on several years of work exploring what it means to create an economy fit for the climate emergency\, GEF and its partners are this year focusing on the crucial question of how to reduce demand for energy and materials. With the support of Green House Think Tank\, Etopia\, and Green Foundation Ireland\, we will explore how to frame rethinking demand politically\, and articulate clear plans for demand reduction so green narratives are better grounded in reality and a shared vision of hope.  \nProgramme\nPlease note that all times are indicated in IST/BST. For participants joining online from a CEST time zone\, everything will be one hour later. \nOur FULL PROGRAMME OF EVENTS is available here. SUMMARY:Rethinking Demand: Sufficiency Policies for a Post-Growth Society
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nSoaring energy prices are pushing European states to urgently implement energy saving measures in all sectors\, as well as financial supports for the most exposed households and businesses. In France\, President Macron did not hesitate to speak of “the end of abundance” and the implementation of a “great sobriety plan”. In Germany\, particularly exposed to the closing of the Russian gas tap\, the Federal State has implemented a series of energy saving measures. Among other things\, large gas consumers are required to register and make themselves available in case of a shortage. In Belgium\, the government has been refining its energy emergency plan for several months with data from large consumers and is considering ways to help the most vulnerable to pay their bills.  \nAre European states ready for the advent of a post-growth society? Can the ecological project of a sober society now inspire public policies? Concretely\, what does a post-growth economic policy look like? What indicators exist to assess these policies? These questions and more will be tackled in this cross-country dialogue. With the support of Green House Think Tank\, Etopia\, and Green Foundation Ireland\, we are exploring how to frame rethinking demand politically\, and articulate clear plans for demand reduction so green narratives are better grounded in reality and a shared vision of hope.  \nSpeakers\nTo discuss this pressing topic\, we will be joined by a fantastic panel of experts:  \n\nYves Marignac – Négawatt\, France \nPhilippe Roman – ICHEC\, Belgium \nMarula Tsagkari – TU Delft / R&D\, Greece \nLasse Thiele – Konzeptwerk\, Germany \nNadine Storey – Green House think tank\, UK \nLeon Leuser – Wachstumswende\, Germany \n\nThe session will begin with a brief presentation of our Rethinking Energy Demand report\, by co-author Nadine Storey (Green House think tank)\, followed by discussion with all our panelists.    \nPracticalities\nDate & Time: Wednesday\, October 26th (12:00-14:00 CET)  \nLocation: Online\, via Zoom. Please register in advance via this link.   \nAudience: Open to all registered participants. The event will be in English.  \n To continue the conversation on this topic\, join us later that same day in Dublin or online at Rethinking Demand: Reality and Opportunities. Make sure to register\, as particularly in person spots are limited!  \n  \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Etopia and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:The Dark Side of the Cloud
DESCRIPTION:Context\nWhen we think of the cloud\, we imagine it as something ethereal\, light and dematerialised. We don’t visualise the millions of devices\, thousands of kilometres of cables\, gigantic data storage\, and processing centres\, or the satellites that make up its immense infrastructure. We don’t conceive the enormous amount of mineral\, water\, and energy resources required for its operation. Nor the environmental impacts resulting from their production and disposal. \nDigital technologies have undoubtedly brought great advances for humanity. However\, if we want to continue to benefit from them in the future\, as well as from a healthy environment\, we must delve deeper into that dark side of the cloud and correct its pernicious effects. This is especially relevant at the present time\, with European post-covid policies pushing for digitalisation as a key element for economic recovery. And not only that\, this endeavour aims to face multiple crises\, including the global supply crisis; the energy crisis aggravated by the war in Ukraine; and an increasingly worrying climate and environmental crisis. \nThese will be discussed in this series\, as well as alternatives for a more energy-efficient\, sustainable and long-lasting digitalisation. \n\n  \nAbout\nThe series “The dark side of the cloud. The environmental impact of the virtual” is organised by the Green European Foundation (GEF) in collaboration with Fundación Transición Verde and La Casa Encendida. \nIt will take place on 20 and 27 October and 3 November\, from 18:00 to 19:30 (CEST) and consists of the following round tables. \n\n20 October: “Feeding the Beast. Part I: Infrastructure\, Water and Minerals“.\n27 October: “Feeding the Beast. Part II: Data and Energy“.\n3 November: “The Bright Side of the Cloud: The Digital Transition we Want“.\n\n\n  \nPracticalities\nThe event is online\, open and free with prior registration through this form. The activity will take place in a Zoom room. SUMMARY:Rethinking Demand: EU Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nAs Russia’s war in Ukraine puts pressure on energy supplies across Europe\, governments are preparing for an uncertain winter\, with concepts like rationing and controlled blackouts suddenly on the table.  \nYet the need to structurally rethink our demand for energy and other key goods is not new. Amid the multiple crises facing Europe and the world\, not least the climate emergency\, there is a continued failure to acknowledge the role of reducing demand in the rapid and fundamental change needed. Mainstream understanding of demand management focuses on improving efficiency and engaging consumers\, which tends to reproduce existing consumption levels with marginally less energy and resource use.  This is insufficient to deliver the reduction in energy use needed as part of a rapid shift to zero carbon and to remain at 1.5°C warming.  \nA better understanding of the realities of demand change is required\, and exploring how to frame this difficult topic is critical to reaching climate targets and energy independence goals. This expert roundtable will bring together academics\, politicians\, activists and NGO/foundation representatives to discuss to what extent we need to reduce energy demand and how we can go about it in a just yet decisive manner. Results of this discussion will inform a framing paper to be published in the autumn. \nProgramme\nMore details on the programme will follow.  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: Thursday\, 15th September (15:00 – 17:00 CEST) \nAudience: This is a closed roundtable. For more information please contact sien.hasker@gef.eu.   \n  \n\nThis expert roundtable is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Green House Think Tank and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:The Potential of Railways
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nThe event is open to all those interested in mobility\, especially members of organisations and platforms working on the issue\, government officials\, politicians and civil society associations. \nOur aim is to publicise more sustainable alternatives when choosing a means of transport and to raise awareness of the need to change our mobility habits. \nThe events will be held via zoom and will have simultaneous translation from Spanish-English. Prior registration is required. \n\n\n\nContext\nThis is the third event of the series of conferences entitled “The Future of European Mobility” \nOne of the key factors in the economic development in our global society has been the ease of mobility for people and goods due to the abundance of cheap oil. But we can already witness the consequences of this irrational mobility in the form of the climate crisis and air pollution. \nIn order to achieve Europe’s decarbonisation goals\, the transport sector is a priority. That is why the German Heinrich Böll Foundation launched last year the European Mobility Atlas\, a comprehensive analysis of the situation of the sector in Europe. The Green European Foundation and the Fundació Nous Horitzons have translated the Atlas into Spanish and\, together with Transición Verde\, have prepared a specific annex on the situation in Spain. For its launch\, we have organised three online events on some modes of transport whose future is key to move towards low-emission mobility. \nThe last session of the series will focus on the railway. The most efficient means of motorised transport which\, beyond the AVE (high-speed rail line)\, has been losing its condition as the backbone of the Spanish geography. Should it recover that condition? Can a large part of freight be transferred to the railway? \nSpeakers\n\nJuantxo López de Uralde\, national Deputy and president of the Commission for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge of the Spanish Congress.\nJosé Luis Ordóñez\, spokesperson of the State Coordination for a Public\, Social and Sustainable Train.\nTilly Metz\, MEP in the Greens/EFA group and member of the Committee on Transport and Tourism.\nManel Ferri \, Spanish Sustainable Mobility Foundation)\n\nModeration: Lidia Ucher\, environmental journalist. \n\n\n\nPracticalities\nDate ant Time: 8th February 18:00-19:30 \nLanguage: The events will be held in Spanish via zoom\, and will have simultaneous translation in English. \nRegistration: Prior registration is required- Please register here. \nThe day before each session we will send a message to the registered persons with the access link. \nThe sessions will be recorded and made available on YouTube. \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Transición Verde and Fundació Nous Horitzons\, and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Green Central-Eastern Network
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThe Green European Foundation is organising an event tailored to those who have the long-term goal to ignite political change in their countries and advance the green movement locally. Specifically\, the event will gather representatives of national political foundations and equivalent organisations from Eastern European countries where GEF has established partners as well as representatives from organisations that have a potential to help in building sustainable green movements. Gender balance will be observed as a key element in moderation and debate. We are looking at a balanced participation of both EU and non-EU countries \nObjectives \n\nConnect: we will foster exchanges on who are the agents of change in the region\, and how they work; \n\n\nLearn: we will address the challenges green organisations are facing\, as well as their successes. We’ll have honest conversations on what works and what doesn’t.  \n\n\nBuild: building on the two objectives above\, we will identify what the network can achieve as a community\, and what the next steps should be.  \n\nContext\nThe Green European Foundation is committed to contribute to the advancement of the “green wave” in Central and Eastern Europe\, in coordination with the efforts made by the other members of the European Green family. We want to reinforce and enlarge the green political movement and its impact in those regions of Europe.   \nIn this context\, we are launching a Green Central-Eastern Network\, aiming at facilitating a network of green political foundations and equivalent organisations from Central and Eastern Europe and allow them a space to co-create a framework of functioning; building an understanding of how shared history\, political context\, and topics can create opportunities for common work; Inspiring action by sharing successes and strategies for achieving them and methods of combatting common threats and challenges. This online event will serve as a preliminary work assessing the needs and strengths of the organisations in the region. The input gathered will impulse the networking event in Vienna next year. \nPracticalities\nDate: 10 December 2021 \nLocation: Zoom \nIn case of questions\, please contact luka.gudek@gef.eu  \n  \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. The European Parliament is not responsible for the content of this event.

SUMMARY:Turning Over a New Leaf (Zagreb)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nIn the spring of 2021\, Zagreb became a city of hope and elected a new green government. But this fresh energy is facing many old challenges (and some new ones). How can the city transform its deeply rooted issues\, from housing to mobility\, and make itself more resilient to climate change? Some changes are simple\, but how do we really turn over a new leaf? This event will explore different transformative practices and potential pathways in an exchange with other green European cities. Inspiring videos of the Cities as Places of hope project will be presented to the audience. \n\nContext\nThis event is part of the ‘Cities as Places of Hope’ series; a project launched in 2019 focussing on progressive city networks that are a key factor in the development of a positive narrative on the future of Europe. The project brings together partners from Spain (Fundación Transición Verde)\, Catalonia (Fundacio Nous Horitzons)\, Croatia (The Institute for Political Ecology-IPE) \, Belgium (Oikos)\, North Macedonia (Sunrise)\, WBGL (Netherlands) and Turkey (Green Thought Association). This 2021 project aims to bring together progressive and transformative trans-local city networks\, to connect them and facilitate their exchanges\, ultimately contributing to a positive narrative for the future of Europe \n\nSpeakers\nThe speakers of the event will be protagonists with transformative stories from Zagreb\, representatives of Green European cities and Project Partners. \n\n\nIva Marčetić – Pravo na grad\n\n\nSarah Baron Brljević\n\n\nSvibor Jančić – Zagreb je naš!\n\n\nDražen Šimleša – ZMAG\n\n\nBenjamin Badouard – Co-Président du groupe “Les écologistes” à la Métropole de Lyon chez Métropole de Lyon\n\n\nDirk Holemans – Co-President of the Green European Foundation\, Oikos Think Tank\n\n\nThe conversation will be moderated by Vedran Horvat (Managing Director\, IPE) and Lana Pukanić (IPE) and accompanied by project videos. \n  \nPracticalities\nDate and time: Wednesday\, December 1st from 18:00 PM CET \nAudience: This event will take place in English \nEvent link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88469944631 \n*The event will take place on the ZOOM platform  \nFollow our Facebook event: Zagreb: Turning over a New Leaf  \n  \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation\, with the support of Institute for Political Ecology and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. SUMMARY:Practicing Food Sovereignty in the Climate Emergency
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nGEF\, with the support of Green Foundation Ireland and Cultivate\, has built on our 2020 publication ‘A Question of SCALE’ and the findings of a webinar held in June 2021 to produce a new pamphlet: ‘Food Sovereignty\, Climate Action and Local Resilience.’ \nThis launch event will include conversations with leading Irish and European advocates of regenerative agriculture\, rural regeneration\, and sustainability. Drawing from the pamphlet\, it will explore how we might take climate action and strengthen the resilience and wellbeing of our local places through the practice of food sovereignty. \nContext\nThis webinar is part of the project Climate Emergency Economy–organised by GEF with the support of Green House Think Tank\, Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks\, Green Foundation Ireland\, and the Foundation for Environment and Agriculture. The project explores policies required in ‘hard-to-reach’ sectors for Europe to reach zero carbon. In 2021\, activities are centred around three key pillars: agriculture\, hydrogen\, and transport infrastructure and trade. \nSpeakers\n\nThomas Waitz – Austrian MEP (Greens/EFA)\, ecological farmer and forester\nEwa Sufin-Jacquemart – Director of the Green Polish foundation “Strefa Zieleni”  \nJudith Hitchman – Food sovereignty activist and president of Urgenci\, the global Community Supported Agriculture network \nMike Small – Scottish freelance writer\, journalist\, author and publisher.  He worked in the Fife district of Scotland to develop new models of organizing around local food that culminated in a book titled Scotland’s Local Food Revolution. \nLisa Fingleton – Artist\, grower\, writer and filmmaker based on an organic farm on the Wild Atlantic Way in Ireland. Her book The Local Food Project explores the power of growing and eating local food. \nBridget Murphy – Regenerative hill farmer based in County Sligo and Core Group member of Talamh Beo\, an alliance of farmers\, growers and land-workers on the island of Ireland. \nModerated by Davie Philip (Cultivate / ECOLISE.eu) \n\nPracticalities\nThis webinar will be taking place via Zoom\, in English. As always\, there will be an interactive Q&A section which will allow full participation by those attending.  \nPlease register in advance via this link. Contact info@greenfoundationireland.ie with any further questions.  \n\nThis project is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Green Foundation Ireland and Cultivate\, with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.  \n

SUMMARY:The Green Hydrogen Transition
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nHydrogen produced from renewable electricity will play a crucial role in the transition to a climate-neutral Europe\, but its adoption raises several issues. These stem from the fact that green hydrogen will be scarce well into the next decade. \nDoes the European Union need a ‘hydrogen ladder’ that puts forward green hydrogen for the industries that are more difficult to decarbonise? Or would this actually slow down the breakthrough of green hydrogen? \nProduced from natural gas\, ‘Blue hydrogen’ has most of its CO2 emissions captured and stored. According to its proponents\, it can pave the way for green hydrogen. What role can blue hydrogen play as a transition fuel and feedstock? \nA growing number of companies and governments\, including the European Commission\, want to invest in the production of green hydrogen in Africa\, the Middle East and other parts of the world that are rich in sun or wind. Will the import of green hydrogen create new geopolitical and ethical risks for the European Union? \nThis roundtable will be moderated by Suzanne Kröger\, former MP for GroenLinks (Netherlands). \nContext:\nThis webinar is part of the project Climate Emergency Economy–organised by GEF with the support of Green House Think Tank\, Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks\, Green Foundation Ireland\, and the Foundation for Environment and Agriculture. The project explores policies required in ‘hard-to-reach’ sectors for Europe to reach zero carbon. In 2021\, activities revolve around three key pillars: agriculture\, hydrogen\, and transport infrastructure and trade. \nPracticalities\nDate and time: Friday 15 October\, from 14:00 to 16:00 CEST  \nAudience: This roundtable is invitation-only.  \nContact: Richard Wouters\, rwouters (at) groenlinks.nl    \n\nThis project is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. SUMMARY:Green Horizons Academy: The Good Story
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nThe Green Horizons Academy is an educational programme that aims to expand the ideas surrounding the green movement towards the alternative liveable future across Europe. Addressing the climate crisis and environmental issues is a home ground for the greens. Still\, we need to better prepare for the forthcoming battles of narratives\, where everyone is “playing the green card”. \nPopulists and conservative authoritarians\, especially in countries with a weak green opposition\, are casting a long shadow over social movements and appropriating environmentalism. Europe’s narrative of openness and solidarity has been put to the test amid the pandemic. The Academy is a space for theory and practice that can serve both for political actors to step into closer communication with the people\, and for citizens to politicize the growing environmental struggles. \nThis year’s Green Horizons Academy’s main topic is building a successful narrative around green values that resonates with the broad public\, therefore its title – THE GOOD STORY. \nOver three days\, we hope to inspire European green actors and raise the capacities of citizens from South-East Europe in their approach to presenting green values and agendas. GHA will also examine the resilience of the local Green political organisations and offer the space for authentic policy debates designed for and from the region. The time has come for green-minded actors to create a cultural uprising\, painting our views as possible\, tangible\, and popular! From the academic field of political theory to the environmental activists and new movements\, the Green Horizons Academy will present\, discuss\, and articulate democratic\, feminist\, sustainable and just alternatives. \nProgramme\nThe 3-day event consists of two interlinked parts:  \n\nclosed daily workshops (registered participants only\, in physical space)  \npublic evening sessions (online) with lectures and panels covering various topics \n\nFriday\, 15 October  \n17:30 Welcome  \n18:00 –  19:15 PUBLIC SESSION: Moving of the Movements (panel): Analysis of the development cycle of the environmental movements\, where are they today\, what messages are they sending\, and what are the roadmaps to success.  \n\nPablo Dominguez (Senior Eco-Anthropologist at the National Council for Scientific Research CNRS\, France) \nSafet Kubat (Eco Movement Rivers of Bosnia and Herzegovina – Be the Change\, PhD candidate in political ecology) \nAleksandar Dragićević (Coalition for Sustainable Development\, Montenegro) \n\n\nŽaklina Živković (Right to Water\, Serbia) \nModerator: Bojana Selaković (Civic Initiatives) \n\n19:30 – 20:45 PUBLIC SESSION: Environmentalism Gone Rights and Wrong (panel): Populist and conservative influences in environmental struggles and our green and left alternative.  \n\nSpeaker: Balša Lubarda – an environmental sociologist specializing in environmental communication\, radicalism\, right-wing politics and political ideologies. SUMMARY:Reforming the Finnish Mining Law
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Green European Foundation’s Metals for a green and digital Europe transnational project\, we will look at how the initiative for reforming the Finnish Mining Act started with the Finnish Parliament’s ratification of the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) in 2018. The proposal on the reform\, originally intended to be submitted to Parliament in December 2020\, has now been postponed by a year as the Ministry chose to include an instrument for the comparison of interests in the reform just as the working group was about to finish its work. During this event we will focus on the background of the reform\, examining the content of the draft\, and offer suggestions for its improvement. Moreover\, we will look at the Metals for a green and digital Europe project outputs and specifically the Agenda for Action document presenting concrete policy recommendations to be published in October 2021.  \nYou can contribute to this Agenda by joining one of our webinars or by commenting on our draft text\, which can be found on www.metalsforeurope.eu \nThe project is led by the Green European Foundation and Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks. SUMMARY:Climate Feminist Summer School
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nWomen and minorities are more likely to be affected by the impacts of climate change and environmental crises\, but are also key to bringing about change in their communities. Countries with more diversity in decision-making have more ambitious climate policies\, while the empowerment of women is also closely linked to better economic and wellbeing outcomes for all.   \nWe need this diversity and we celebrate it\, but we also know that it flourishes best when it is pursued actively and obstacles are clearly understood. Specific support for systemically underrepresented groups\, including women and non-binary people\, is crucial in order to make a change in traditionally male-dominated spaces.   \nHow are women currently excluded from climate negotiations and decisions? What are the lessons and insights from those leaders who have managed to break through? What are the narratives and structures that keep inequalities in place\, and the “gender-blind” solutions that fail to challenge the status quo? How does the patriarchal exploitation of the planet relate to the lived experiences and activism of women of colour\, indigenous women\, LGBTQ+ women\, and others? And above all\, what can we do to address all of this?   \nThis online summer school will feature a series of interactive sessions to explore the gendered impacts of the climate crisis\, but also provide concrete tools\, inspiration\, and knowledge to equip participants in their own lives and with a special eye on COP26. We will facilitate encounters between activists\, climate scientists\, researchers\, policy makers\, campaigners\, politicians\, and the general public\, in order to move this priority high on the agenda and spark connections across Europe and beyond.  \nContext: \nThis summer school is part of the project “Feminists in the Climate Movement\,” organised by GEF with the support of Visio\, Green Economics Institute\, Oikos\, and Fundacja Strefa Zieleni. With a closed training programme for selected Feminist Climate Ambassadors as well as a series of public events\, the project seeks to build capacity among (potential) climate leaders\, while highlighting the gendered aspects and impacts of the climate crisis to a broader audience.    \nSpeakers: \nConfirmed speakers include:  \n\nProf. Graciela Chichilnisky (professor of economics at Columbia University\, IPCC lead author\, co-founder of Global Thermostat) \nClare Bailey (Leader of Green Party Northern Ireland)\nJean Lambert (European Green Party)\nMana Livardjani (Director of ENOP – European Network of Political Foundations)\nFrances Roberts-Gregory (Northeastern University Future Faculty Fellow)\nPatrizia Heidegger (European Environmental Bureau)\nRahila James (ActionAid Nigeria)\nMarie Pochon (Notre Affaire a Tous)\nEwa Sufin-Jacquemart (director of Strefa Zieleni\, Congress of Women coordinator) \nChelangat Scholar (national chairperson at Green Congress of Kenya) \nOlfa Jelassi (GenderCC) \nDr. Alexandra Harrington (research director at Centre for International Sustainable Development Law) \n\nAnd many more! \nProgramme:  \nThe full programme and speakers can be found here. Please note that sessions are subject to change.  \nPracticalities: \nDate and time: August 20th – 22nd (13:00 – 19:30)    \n\nSessions include plenaries\, networking\, workshops\, social sessions\, and many other formats. There will be plenty of extended breaks\, and participants are welcome to join whenever and for whichever session(s) they want.  \n\nAudience: This summer school will take place in English\, online\, and is open to the general public. We strive for an open but safe space\, making the summer school as interactive and accessible as possible while ensuring the wellbeing of our participants.    \nRegistration: Please register in advance here.  \n  \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of the Green Economics Institute and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. SUMMARY:REACHING ZERO CARBON TRANSPORT: WHAT WILL IT TAKE?
DESCRIPTION:About the Event: \nThe UK and EU are planning investments in transport infrastructure – airports\, seaports\, new roads and railways – which will lock in future carbon emissions and make their ‘net zero’ targets impossible to meet.  \nHow can we achieve zero carbon emissions from transport of freight and passengers? What needs to change to make net zero carbon transport a reality? Where should public money be invested? And what obstacles are blocking this?  \nPlease join us to explore these questions – and share ideas on how we can redirect policy to make it fit for a climate emergency economy . \n  \nContext: \nThis webinar is part of the project Climate Emergency Economy – organised by GEF with the support of Green House Think Tank\, Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks\, Green Foundation Ireland\, and the Foundation for Environment and Agriculture. The project explores policies required in ‘hard-to-reach’ sectors for Europe to reach zero carbon. In 2021\, activities are centred around three key pillars: agriculture\, hydrogen\, and transport infrastructure and trade.   \n  \nSpeakers:  \n\nNatalie Bennett – Green Party peer and former leader of the Green Party of England and Wales \nProf. Julian Allwood – Professor of Engineering and the Environment at the University of Cambridge\, and Head of the Use Less Group and UK FIRES \nJonathan Essex\, chartered engineer and environmentalist \n\n\nAndrew Murphy\, Aviation Director\, Transport & Environment \n\n\nProgramme:  \n19:00 – Welcome  \n19:05 – Prof. Julian Allwood: The Big Picture (what needs to change in the transport of goods and people in order for us to meet real zero carbon in the UK and EU)  \n19:30 – Jonathan Essex: key findings from upcoming GEF report on transport infrastructure investment  \n19:40 – Andrew Murphy: the aviation perspective  \n19:50 – Natalie Bennett: the political response  \n20:00 – Moderated Q&A  \nThis programme is provisional and may be subject to change. There will be interactive audience polling throughout this event.   \n\nPracticalities: \nThis event will take place online on Monday\, July 12th (19:00 – 20:30 CEST).  \nAdmission is free but please register in advance via this link.  \n  \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Green House Think Tank and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Transforming into a sustainable city: the green adventure of Ghent
DESCRIPTION:About the event:\nIn the transformation into a socio-ecological society\, frontrunner cities have become places of hope for implementing future-oriented policies and reconnecting with citizens. Moving beyond the experiment\, they are implementing transitions such as the change from a car-based mobility system into one giving priority to bicycles and public transport\, from a city full of concrete into a blue and green city that is a great place to stay and can cope with heat waves. This overall transformation enhances the quality of life for its inhabitants while taking responsibility for global challenges. \nOne of these inspiring cities is Ghent in Belgium. With the green party already strong in opposition\, it entered city government in 2013. Since then\, ambitious policies have been developed in fields such as mobility\, energy\, climate\, food and housing. It shows that radical change is possible. For instance\, a green mobility plan has led to a 17 per cent drop in car use while bicycle use has increased by more than 50 per cent. The city now also has a food policy and an ambitious social housing policy.\nGreen Vice-mayors Tine Heyse and Filip Watteeuw will talk about their ambitious policies\, how they realize it and of course what their future plans are. \nPart of the ‘Cities as Places of Hope’ series; a project launched in 2019 focusing on progressive city networks that are a key factor in the development of a positive narrative on the future of Europe. The project brings together partners from Spain\, Croatia\, Belgium\, North Macedonia\, Turkey and The Netherlands. \n  \nPracticalities:\nWhere: Online platform – ZOOM \nDate and Time: Wednesday 30th June 17:00 – 18:30 PM CET \nAudience: This event is an open digital seminar with the Cities as Places of Hope Project Partners\, Local Councillors and the general public. \nRegistrations are now open: Preview – Online Survey Software | Qualtrics Survey Solutions <<< \n  \n  \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Oikos Think Tank and with the financial support of the European parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Food Sovereignty\, Climate Action & Local Resilience
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nThis webinar aims to bring together food sovereignty advocates\, progressive farmers\, environmentalists\, and cooperative and local economy activists\, as well as interested members of the general public for a conversation on regional resilience and climate action.  \nClimate Action is both absolutely necessary and open to exploitation by those with economic power. Food Sovereignty and Local Resilience approaches mean climate action can happen via a people’s transition.   \nConversations with leading advocates of food sovereignty\, rural regeneration and sustainable community will explore how we might strengthen the resilience and wellbeing of our local places through regenerative agriculture.   \nContext:\nThis webinar is part of the project Climate Emergency Economy – organised by GEF with the support of Green House Think Tank\, Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks\, Green Foundation Ireland\, and the Foundation for Environment and Agriculture. The project explores policies required in ‘hard-to-reach’ sectors for Europe to reach zero carbon. In 2021\, activities are centred around three key pillars: agriculture\, hydrogen\, and transport infrastructure and trade.  \nSpeakers:\nConfirmed speakers include:  \n\nFergal Anderson – Small farmer and chair of Talamh Beo\, The Irish Landworkers Alliance; formerly at Via Campesina Brussels \nMorgan Ody – Farmer\, member of Confederation Paysanne and the European Coordinating Committee of Via Campesina. \nHannes Lorenzen – Advisor on Agriculture and Rural Development\, Greens/EFA  \nSuzie Cahn – Climate Justice Centre at TASC\, Carraig Dulra\, council member of ECOLISE.eu \n\n\nDr. Oliver Moore – Researcher and communicator with ARC 2020 \nJennifer McConnell – Food Sovereignty Researcher\, former CEO of Irish Seed Savers Association \n\nThe webinar will be facilitated by Davie Philip (Cultivate).   \nProgramme:  \nA context paper on ‘Food Sovereignty\, Climate Change and Local Resilience’ is being developed. This will be published as a pamphlet with case studies and graphics – the first draft will be made available to contributors and webinar participants on Monday\, June 28th\, and outputs from the webinar will be added to the document.  \nThe webinar will consist of a number of conversations and open questions responding to aspects of the article\, with room for both speaker and audience input.   \nPracticalities:\nThis event will take place online on Tuesday\, June 29th (16:30 – 18:00 CEST).  \nAdmission is free but you must register in advance via this link. The Zoom link and other practical details will be shared upon registration.  \n  \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Green Foundation Ireland and Cultivate and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. SUMMARY:Metals for a Green and Digital Europe (Poland)
DESCRIPTION:Context\nThe energy transition and the development of renewable energy sources are not the only sustainable transformations that will require large amounts of metals. The electrification of transport\, the digitalisation (with all telecommunications and computerization devices) and\, more broadly\, the increase in the demand for batteries will also demand a significant quantity of certain minerals. \nThe European Commission predicts that in order to achieve climate neutrality by 2050\, the EU will need 60 times more lithium\, 15 times more cobalt and 10 times more rare earth metals than today – for the energy transition alone. Considering that the EU currently depends 75 to 100% on metal imports\, mainly from China\, this has serious geopolitical ramifications. \nThe European Commission aims for the Union to be as independent as possible to find the means to implement the European Green Deal. Working towards (or returning to) a metal mining production system in the EU is a serious option to consider as environmental and social standards are much higher in the EU than in developing countries. But of course\, the EU needs to start by developing the potential of the circular economy and recycling systems. Exploiting the accumulated mining and industrial waste containing metals\, and developing and improving the collection of products containing metals\, their recycling and recovery of raw materials\, and perhaps finished alloys. \nDoes our current economic model based on constant growth -and thus consumption- offer a chance for such subversive reductions in greenhouse gas emissions as assumed by the European Green Deal? Are we not supposed to embrace a transformation of the economic model? \nAbout the event\n  \nAs for the situation in Poland\, many questions remain unanswered: \n\nWhat are the national needs when it comes to metals?\n What are the blocking elements in the demand for metals for the green and digital transformation?\nWhere are the red lines to watch out for and priorities to defend?\nWhat are the positions on these issues?\n\nThis round table will provide as many answers as possible to these questions and explore paths for further analysis. \n\nThis project is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Fundacja Strefa Zieleni and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. The European Parliament is not responsible for the content of this event.
