SUMMARY:Making Basic Income a European Reality (Tampere)
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nThe long lived dream of a basic income has gained relevance in Europe in the last few years. Changing working life and an uncertain economy has sparked the need for social security reforms in many countries. The Finnish basic income study has received world wide coverage. The goals have long been established but how do countries move forward to make it actually happen? Is a European BI possible? Should we approach BI incrementally? \nIn this seminar\, taking place at the 30th European Green Party Council\, guest speakers will discuss the status of basic income developments in different countries and outline paths to make the utopia a reality. Both national and Europe-wide points of view will be discussed. The seminar is a chance to spread ideas among the participants and help implement change across Europe. \nSpeakers\nVia video: Jamie Cooke\, The RSA Scotland \nPathways to a Basic Income in Scotland and the UK \nJane Millar\, University of Bath\, UK\nUniversal Credit: designing and implementing the UK’s new working-age benefit and how this differs from Basic Income \nKim Evangelista\, Belgian Green party (Ecolo)\nA Basic Income for the young: Inventing tomorrow’s solidarities \nLukas Korpelainen\, Visio – Finnish Green Think Tank\nA hybrid model for basic social security and the steps for the next 10 years in Finland \n  \nSpeaker Biographies\nJane Millar OBE\, FBA\, FAcSS is Professor of Social Policy in the Institute for Policy Research at the University of Bath\, UK. Her research interests include the design\, implementation and impact of social policy and comparative research on family policy\, social security and employment policy\, with particular reference to gender and changing family patterns. Her current research examines the impact of Universal Credit on couples\, focusing on labour market decisions and family budgeting. \nKim Evangelista is a policy advisor for the Belgian Green party (Ecolo). He is in charge of economic\, social and fiscal policies. He worked on a concrete Basic Income proposition included in the political program of the party for the May 2019 election. He studied economics and political sciences\, and was later a researcher in applied economics. He worked in both the private and public sector \nLukas Korpelainen is a research coordinator at the Finnish Green think tank Visio. Earlier this year he wrote a report on improving the basic social security system in Finland. The work includes a new model for a basic income combined with means-tested benefits and a realistic first step with economic simulations. He has also helped the Finnish Green party develop its social security policies. \nJamie Cooke is the head of The RSA Scotland and leads on the development of the RSA’s activity in Scotland\, through innovative partnerships\, projects and programmes. He is also a leading advocate\, writer\, and speaker on the subject of basic income. SUMMARY:Green Academy Winter Seminar - Degrowth Kaleidoscope: Real-Existing Utopia(s) (Plitvička Jezera)
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nThe Green European Foundation\, in cooperation with the Institute for Political Ecology\, the Open Society Initiative for Europe and the Heinrich Böll Stiftung – Prague office\, is organising the 3rd edition of the Green Academy Winter Seminar. \nThe seminar will focus on the ongoing debates around the Green New Deal and degrowth concepts and practices in the context of the climate emergency. Deeper avenues to be explored will look at the theoretical\, political and practical level and identify convergencies and conflicts. The seminar will allow for exchanges to develop strategies for concrete change and policies. \nParticipants will be introduced to “degrowth doughnut” visualisations\, underlining the cultural excesses and shortfalls in a democratic construction of a degrowth transition. \nA “kaleidoscopic” perspective of the movement and various interconnections and differences will explore specific sectors where degrowth can make a fundamental difference\, while also considering the significance of the emerging Green New Deal policies on both sides of the Atlantic. \nDemands for a socially just and planned transition need to be articulated precisely in order to head off reactionary responses to the climate emergency. And this we shall redesign as we go\, for the further Europeans slide into climate chaos without establishing a convivial sociality\, the more likely we are to contend with authoritarian and inegalitarian powers to which emergency conditions often give rise. \nThe politics of this historical dynamic – the actors\, alliances\, institutions and social processes creating degrowth transitions is the subject of lively debate in Europe and beyond\, shaping up right before our eyes. Given the fact that in 2020 Croatia will take over the EU Presidency\, we will aim to explore ways how our thinking and actions can become turning points for Europe to be able to take another course. \nProgramme\nFRIDAY 8th OF NOVEMBER \n15:00 DEPARTURE FROM ZAGREB (ORGANISED BUS TRANSPORT – PARKING NEXT TO MAIN TRAIN STATION (ACCROSS IMPORTANE CENTRE ENTRANCE) \n17:15 ARRIVAL TO HOTEL – CHECK-IN AND REGISTRATION \n18:00 WELCOME NOTE AND INTRODUCTION \nVedran Horvat\, IPE Zagreb\, Head/Board of Directors\, GEF \nNino Lejava\, HBS\, Head of Prague office \nJagoda Munić\, FoEE\, Director\, Bruxelles/GA program council \nDanijela Dolenec\, Faculty of Political Sciences\, Associate Professor\,Zagreb/GA program council \nPresentation of working groups: Clara Dellaire-Fortier\, Nikolina Rajković\, Andro Rilović\, Ajda Pistotnik \nEVENING CONVERSATION: ”DEGROWTH MOVEMENT\, THOUGHT AND ACTION IN THE MIDST OF CLIMATE COLLAPS” \nEvening conversation with Vincent Liegey\, Cargonomia\, Hungary/France \n20:00 DINNER \nSATURDAY 9TH OF NOVEMBER \n09:00 MORNING LECTURE – Tiziano Distefano \n”Social cohesion in the ecological transition” \n10:00 MORNING PANEL \nGREEN NEW DEAL AND DEGROWTH – REAL-EXISTING UTOPIAS IN ACTION \nWith: Sean Sweney (TUED)\, Pawel Wargan (DiEM25)\, Marija Bartl (UA)\, Jagoda Munić (FoEE) \nModerated by: Danijela Dolenec and Vedran Horvat \n11:30 COFFEE BREAK \n11:30 WORKING GROUPS 1 \n\nLABOR\, DEMOCRACY AND DEGROWTH (Clara Dallaire-Fortier & Nina Rajković with Dario Farcy\, Sean Sweney and Marija Bartl)\nDEGROWTH AND DEBT (Ajda Pistotnik with Mark Perreira and Tilman Hartley)\nDEGROWTH (&) MUNICIPALISM (Andro Rilović with Eugen Vuković\, Eleanor Finley\, Vincent Liegey)\n\n13:30 LUNCH BREAK & WALK \n17:30 WORKING GROUPS 2 \n\nLABOR\, DEMOCRACY AND DEGROWTH (Clara Dallaire Fortier & Nina Rajković with Dario Farcy\, Sean Sweney and Marija Bartl)\nDEGROWTH AND DEBT (Ajda Pistotnik with Mark Perreira and Tilman Hartley)\nDEGROWTH (&) MUNICIPALISM (Andro Rilović with Eugen Vuković\, Eleanor Finley\, Vincent Liegey)\n\n19:30 DINNER \n21:00 DONUTS AND WINE EVENING TALK ON SUSTAINABILITY ON EUROPEAN (SEMI)PERIPHERY – \n\nMladen Domazet \nClara Dallaire-Forter\nJenny Ufer\nBranko Ančić\n\nSUNDAY 10TH NOVEMBER \n09:00 MORNING LECTURE \nPetr Jiehlička\, Open University\, UK \nDegrowth lessons from the European East: self-provisioning\, sharing and the resilient food system \n10:00 WORKING GROUPS 3 \n\nLABOR\, DEMOCRACY AND DEGROWTH (Clara Dallaire Fortier & Nina Rajković with Dario Farcy\, Sean Sweney and Marija Bartl)\nDEGROWTH AND DEBT (Ajda Pistotnik with Mark Perreira and Tilman Hartley)\nDEGROWTH (&) MUNICIPALISM (Andro Rilović with Eugen Vuković\, Eleanor Finley\, Vincent Liegey)\n\n11:30 BREAK \n12:00 REPORTS FROM WORKING GROUPS \n12:30 Post-growth awakening for EU: positioning degrowth agenda and international cooperation on climate action within the context of EU Croatian Presidency \nModeration: Dražen Šimleša \n13:15 Closing \n13:30 Lunch \n14:30 Departure to Zagreb \n17:00 estimated arrival \n\nThis event is a cooperation between the Institute for Political Ecology\, the Green European Foundation\, the Open Society Initiative for Europe and the Heinrich Böll Stiftung Prague office\, with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Food as a Commons (Cork)
DESCRIPTION:Event Background\nAs part of the transnational project Fair and Healthy Food\, GEF aims to reach different actors and bring them together to explore alternative solutions and reforms to the European Union’s Common Agricultural Policy and how to redesign food systems around agroecological principles. \nAlongside exploring examples of cities developing their own outstanding food policies\, the project will also examine how regional sustainable food systems can revitalise rural communities. \nAbout the Event\nRising public concern around climate change and biodiversity loss has led to increasing attention on our food system as both a cause but also a potential contributing solution to environmental breakdown. While efforts are underway to reform European food and agricultural policies in order to better protect nature and rural livelihoods\, growing numbers of people are becoming actively involved in reshaping food systems at local level. \nSuch efforts are demonstrating a creative resurgence of ideas and practices of how we can recover the multidimensional values of food as a public good rather than allow it to remain as a means for private corporate profit\, and to help reduce our own personal environmental footprint and retrieve some control over our food supply. \nThe event proposes that food is not only a vital source of personal well-being but offers a route toward greater citizen engagement. Growing food in cities offers numerous benefits for the urban environment and community resilience and can improve availability of fresh\, nourishing produce especially for those for whom access is restricted by income. Above all\, it enables us to re-establish the central purpose of a food system: to produce food sustainably to feed people adequately. \nThis day-long event is an opportunity to pool ideas\, share experiences and celebrate the power of community in growing\, cooking and eating food. \nYou are encouraged to book early for this event as we will restrict numbers in order to facilitate an engaged\, constructive and convivial experience. \nProgramme\n09:15 – 09:30\nGather in the Lecture Room of Nano Nagle Place \n09:30 – 11:00\nTwo keynote presentations will address new thinking that is helping us to redesign civic food systems led by Henk Renting\, Researcher and Lecturer in Urban Food Systems at AERES University of Applied Sciences\, Almere\, the Netherlands and Orla O’Donovan\, Lecturer at the School of Applied Social Studies\, University College Cork. The session will be introduced and chaired by Colin Sage\, Co-Founder and former Chair of the Cork Food Policy Council. \n11:00 – 12:45\nIn order to enable full engagement by participants this session will be organised as a World Café\, and convened by Klaus Harvey of Transition Town Kinsale. Coffee and nibbles will be available and there will be short presentations as inputs to deliberations from Food Historian Regina Sexton\, GIS Expert Tomás Kelly and others. \n12:45 – 13:30\nReport back from table hosts\, discussion and elaboration of final action points. \n13:30 – 14:00\nWalk to St. John’s Central College\, Sawmill Street\, Cork (a short 5 minute walk). \n14:00 – 16:00\nWe will join the ‘street feast’ that is being hosted by La Cocina Pública\, a Chilean theatre group that will be based in the Cork South Parish neighbourhood as part of the Cork Midsummer Festival. Please note that the registration fee will include lunch here. \nSpeakers \n\nHenk Renting\nResearcher and Lecturer in Urban Food Systems\,\nAERES University of Applied Sciences\, Almere\, The Netherlands\nOrla O’Donovan\nLecturer at the School of Applied Social Studies\,\nUniversity College Cork\nColin Sage\nCo-Founder and former Chair of the Cork Food Policy Council\n\nLa Cocina Pública / The Public Kitchen\nHoused in a shipping container La Cocina Pública is a mobile kitchen that brings people together through theatre\, food and dining.\nTravelling from Chile through cities and neighbourhoods in Europe in search of local recipes\, aromas\, practices and customs\, La Cocina Publica will work with Cork’s South Parish residents to share stories and food that will be enjoyed at delicious collective dining events – with Chilean and Cork artists\, storytellers\, singers and musicians providing you with memories and entertainment. Your ticket includes a meal\, but to encourage a family-friendly atmosphere for all ages\, no alcohol will be served at these events. \nTickets\nThis event costs €20 per person (plus booking fee)\, which covers entrance to all events on Saturday\, including morning coffee as well as lunch during the Cocina Pública street feast. \nPlease secure your place by booking here – early booking is RECOMMENDED as numbers will be restricted in order to facilitate an engaged\, constructive and convivial experience. \n\n

SUMMARY:Jobs in a Changing Climate (Dublin)
DESCRIPTION:Context\nWith a changing climate\, many traditional jobs will be lost all over Europe\, as a just transition to less carbon emission intensive industries is inevitable. It will be vital for all stakeholders\, such as policy makers\, trade union representatives\, civil society organisations\, think tanks and businesses to establish a dialogue and to come up with new solutions to those challenges – and the Green movement can spearhead this process. \nAbout the event\nAs part of the transnational project “Strengthening Climate Targets\, Creating Local Climate Jobs”\,  this conference will contribute to the discussion within the Irish society and among the key stakeholders on how to ensure a just transition to Zero Carbon and create local climate jobs across the country. \nThe event will also feature results of the ongoing research of the Green European Foundation and its partners to draft and launch strategies for local investment to create more climate jobs in Ireland. \nOne of the practical examples that will be discussed is the proposed closure of three peat burning power stations in the Midlands and the effect on the livelihoods of 400 workers. Studies have been carried out on how the transition to a low carbon society in the UK will create sustainable jobs in Sheffield and Isle of Wight. Also we will look at the Lucas Plan\, where workers devised viable alternatives to redundancies\, using their skills to develop socially useful products and services. The implementation of the Circular Economy will also affect jobs\, positively and negatively\, and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. \nSpeakers\nDuncan Stewart\, Environmentalist\, Broadcaster\, and Chair\, Green Foundation Ireland \nTommy Simpson\, Project Coordinator Green Foundation Ireland and former President Dublin Council of Trade Unions \nJonathan Essex\, Project Coordinator\, Greenhouse Think Tank United Kingdom \nPeter Simms\, Researcher\,Greenhouse Think Tank United Kingdom \nAdrian Kane\, Public Administration and Community Division Organiser\, SIPTU \nSinead Mercier\, Researcher\, Just Transition \nYvonne O’Callaghan\, Strategic Organiser\, SIPTU Trade Union Ireland \nJoseph Curtin\, Senior Fellow\, Institute of International and European Affairs \nThe input by the speakers will be each followed by Q&A sessions to allow for full participation in the event of those attending. \n\nThe event is free of charge but registration is required. To secure your spot follow this link. \nRegistration for the event on the day starts at 9:30. \nFor more  information on  the conference\, please contact info@greenfoundationireland.ie

SUMMARY:The Commons Transition in Practice (Brussels)
DESCRIPTION:Context\nCities are becoming a new and hopeful transnational governance level. They are organising themselves in a whole tissue of networks (Fearless Cities\, Fabcities\, etc.)\, working together in domains like climate policy\, renewable energy and urban economy. \nAt the same time\, citizens are developing a whole range of urban commons\, based on co-operation and an ethics of care. Tired of only being a powerless consumer or a passive citizen\, we get active as maker\, urban farmer\, solidarity volunteer\, user of shared resources\, civic or social entrepreneur\, etc. This goes along with the establishment of new organisations and infrastructures like fab labs\, energy co-ops\, co-working spaces\, urban food production plots\, and many more. \nIn recent years\, we have seen cities like Ghent and Bologna moving a step further\, establishing structures and processes that aim at building synergies between the public and the commons domain. This is part of a new political vision\, the Partner State. So\, a partner city sustains and gives incentives to alternative civil and economic institutions\, like the commons and cooperatives. The conference\, as part of this year’s transnational project around Urban Commons Transitions\, therefore aims to look at these developments of collaborative city-making and to examine those prototypes of transformative cities as a driving force towards socio-ecological societies. \nLately institutions\, research groups and organisations were created to investigate how commons could be integrated in a more sustainable way in the vivid networks of cities. \nAbout the Event\nThe seminar will be kicked off by two experts who will share their experiences and knowledge: Michel Bauwens (P2P-Foundation) and Elena De Nictolis (LabGov). Afterwards\, all participants are invited to enrich the debate by contributing with their own perspective and experiences in the field. \nThis seminar organised with the support of our Flemish partner Oikos Think Tank is targeting participants that are already working on commons. By bringing together the theoretical and experiential experts\, this event aims to tackle the challenges on how urban commons transitions can be a prototype for creating socio-ecological societies.   \nMore info and updates can be found in our Facebook event. \nHow to register\nTo register for this seminar follow these steps: \n1. Send an e-email to info@oikos.be stating your motivation and shortly describing the commons initiative/project you are active in  \n2. Participation fee: for organisations € 20\, for private individuals € 10. \n3. Transfer the participation fee to the following details: BE29 0015 9877 0164 (BIC: GEBA BE BB) of Oikos vzw with as a reference ‘seminar commons’ \nYour participation for this seminar will confirmed to you via e-mail. \nJoin our evening conference!\nThe seminar will be followed from 19h30 to 21h30 by a conference entitled ‘Creating Eco-Societies through Urban Commons Transitions‘. During this event\, the experts will debate with a broader audience and share thoughts with commons’ initiatives already functioning in an Urban environment.

SUMMARY:Digitised Security – How to Read the Surveillance Discourse and Fight it!
DESCRIPTION:The seminar took place from 24th – 30th April in Bosnia. It was inspired by a digital [x] webinar that looked at the political reactions sparked by the terrorist attacks in Paris and how the tension between security and freedom was framed by agenda setters. A year later\, censorship and mass surveillance are becoming the norm\, and we want to fight this: we want to change the discourse to achieve better policy and give everyone the tools to protect their freedom\, even in hostile environments. \nThe programme was based on the principles of non-formal education and intercultural learning. We strove for active\, inclusive and direct communication and transfer of knowledge. The sessions were balanced between theoretical inputs\, workshops\, role-plays\, debates\, discussions\, reflection and other interactive methods of learning. \nThe seminar aspired to: \n\nExplore how recent events have led to fear being instrumentalised to restrict our online freedoms;\nAnalyse how online censorship and mass surveillance are justified by governing bodies and why these policies are ineffective at increasing security;\nSee how they harm personal freedoms and democracy;\nLook at why anonymity and privacy is important for oppressed and minority groups to avoid persecution and harassment;\nDevelop skills to use software that protects us from surveillance and overcomes censorship.\n\nDuring the week-long event\, 40 young people from all over Europe came together and aimed at creating a vibrant environment to produce sustainable and long lasting collaboration to fight for common digital rights! \nThe event reported can be downloaded here. \nMore information\nDate: 24 – 30 April 2017\nLocation: (close to) Sarajevo\, Bosnia and Herzegovina\nDuration: 6 working days\nWorking language: English\nNumber of participants: 40 \nCall for applications closed!\nCall for Participants\nProject Description\nAGENDA \nThis project was supported by the Youth Department of the Council of Europe\, Green Forum (Sweden)\, Green European Foundation and Terry Reintke (Member of the European Parliament\, The Greens/EFA).

SUMMARY:ECOPRO Seminar in Zagreb
DESCRIPTION:This event is a part of our transnational project ECOPRO (“Ecological Production in a Post-Growth Society”)\, which this year has a particular focus on the sustainable work. The seminar was entitled “Future of Work in Ecological Transition”\, as it provided an analysis of impacts of the ecological transition on work\, working conditions and generally transformation of labour that are generated by environmental challenges. \nTransition of both economy and industry to (more) ecological\, just and sustainable modes of production is already – with more or less success – taking place globally and in Europe. In some cases it takes forms of technological revolution\, in other it relates to slower transformatory processes that deserve adaptation of societies\, citizens\, workers. As this change generates irreversible impacts on work conditions\, quality of work\, job security\, time\, education system it is also opportunity for new ecology of work that will improve quality of life\, social equity and work conditions. Taking into account new impetus for industrial policy in Croatia\, this seminar will aim to present different views on conditions for creating sustainable work in Croatia. \nFurthermore\, this event had a strong focus on exploring directions in which work conditions can be improved throughout ecological and just transition; ecologists\, trade unionists\, politicians and experts from different will share their insights and experiences about ways in which work conditions\, quality of work and social criteria can be improved alongside with fundamental changes in the systems of production and consumption. \nPROGRAMME: \n11h30 – 13h00 Introduction \n\nVedran Horvat\, Institute for Political Ecology\, Zagreb\nBeate Littig\, Institute for Human Sciences\, Vienna\nToni Vidan\, European Economic and Social Committee\, Brussels/Green Action/FoE Croatia\, Zagreb\nAna Maria Boromisa\, Institute for Development and International Relations\, Zagreb\nBojana Percan\, Croatian Union of Independent Trade Unions\, Croatia\n\n13h00 – 14h00 Lunch break \n14h00 – 16h00 Debate \n\nBranko Ančić\, Institute for Social Research\, Zagreb\nKarolina Leaković\,  International Secretary\, Socialdemocratic party of Croatia\nSiniša Vinković\, European Trade Union Confederation\n\nThis event was open to public and free of charge.

SUMMARY:Urban Commons - Commoning the City
DESCRIPTION:Commons as a concept and practice entered into mainstream after Elinor Ostrom received in 2009 Nobel Award in Economics for empirically proving that communities can sustainably manage natural resources without direct influence of the state and the market. Concept of commons was extended for also human-made resources and even immaterial resources and for different contexts including the urban. More radical and critical approaches of commons emerged especially in the context of various urban social movements fighting against privatisation\, commodification and commercialisation of cities. Practices of self-governance and community governance of urban resources were introduced or reintroduced in cities all around Europe. In Athens there is a network of solidarity commoning practices providing food\, housing and even health service to people who are left behind after years of austerity politics. In Bologna the local government even adopted regulation so communities can engage in collaboration to produce and regenerate urban commons. In Barcelona citizen platform called “Barcelona in Common” won the local elections and is trying to establish framework for urban commons governance in different sectors. \nThis seminar presented examples of urban commoning in cities of Madrid\, Berlin\, Maribor\, Belgrade and Zagreb. It provided forum for exchange on various inspirational urban commons practices as well as confrontational tactics against the enclosure of the urban commons and privatisation of the urban public goods. Seminar aimed to tackle the debate among participants on how can urban commons and self-governance models be enhanced\, supported and protected in cities of the region. \nPROGRAMME:  \n\n10h00 – 10h30 Introduction to theory of the commons – Tomislav Tomašević (Institute for Political Ecology)\n10h30 – 11h30 Urban commons practices in Madrid and Berlin – Lucia Lois (El Patio Maravillas) and Marco Clausen (Nachbar¬schafts¬akademie)\n11h30 – 12h00 Discussion\n12:h0 – 12h45 Lunch \n12h45 – 13h45 Commoning the city in Belgrade and Maribor – Iva Ćukić (Ministarstvo prostora) and Matic Primc (Iniciativa mestni zbor)\n13h45 – 15h30 – Discussion\n15h30 – 16h00 – Break\n16h00 – 17h30 – How to enhance the urban commons in local context? (open roundtable) – Iva Marčetić\, Mislav Žitko\, Alma Midžić\, Teodor Celakoski\, Emina Višnić\, Enes Ćerimagić\, Dušica Radojčić\, Nikola Zdunić\, Cvjeta Bišćević\, Svibor Jančić\n\nThis event is a part of our transnational project “Reclaim the Commons”\, which revives the debate around the commons as a fundamental part of the Green political ideology across Europe. \nThis event was open to public and free of charge.

SUMMARY:ECOPRO Seminar in Brussels
DESCRIPTION:As a part of the ECOPRO project with a focus on the “Sustainable Work for All in a Post-Growth Society”\, an inspiring seminar was held in Brussels\, as an opportunity to engage with the different participants of the project. Three relevant speakers participated it the seminar with the presentations focusing on the central theme of the new ways of “work”\, presented with a variety of perspectives. \nThe first speaker was Dustin Benton\, head of Energy and Resources at Green Alliance\, a charity and independent think tank focused on ambitious leadership for the environment. Mr. Benton gave a very interesting presentation about jobs in a circular economy. He participated in a study about the potential of new jobs in a circular economy in Italy\, Poland and Germany. \nThe second speaker was Raimon Roda\, director at the Baix Llobregat Agricultural park just outside Barcelona. He used the park as an example of the potentials for the agricultural areas near cities to foster sustainable development and evolution towards local food production. \nThe last speaker of the day was Anne Snick\, expert on gender and social sustainable economy. Her presentation focused on the need of the current economy to serve the basic societal functions –  efficient allocation of resources to the well being of all. Her presentation also highlighted the gender implications of contemporary economic system and possible solutions for such issues. \nThis seminar ended with a fruitful discussion and a lot of questions from the participants after each presentation.
