SUMMARY:Materials\, (De)Growth and Geopolitics (Utrecht)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nEuropean demand for materials has impacts all over the world. Our consumption\, far greater than the global average\, contributes to the destruction of ecosystems near and far. For some materials and goods\, we depend on autocratic regimes. So there is an ecological and a geopolitical need to reduce our resource consumption. To do so\, should we abandon the pursuit of economic growth\, as advocated by the degrowth movement? Could we still meet everyone’s needs and grow our well-being?  \nMany of the materials that we use\, including for the energy transition\, are extracted in the Global South. There\, mining often comes at the expense of the environment\, nature and local communities. At the same time\, millions of people depend on mining for their livelihoods. Can the EU assist developing countries in earning more with less mining? Can we break with neo-colonial exploitation and build new partnerships with the Global South? After all\, we need partners in a time of mounting geopolitical conflicts and a deepening ecological crisis.  \nThe questions we discuss in this seminar are inspired by GEF’s report Geopolitics of a Post-Growth Europe and a (forthcoming) report by the Dutch Young Climate Movement on what young people need to live sustainably. We will discuss them with experts\, in plenary and break-out sessions\, and formulate political action points together.  \n  \nProgramme and Speakers\n13:00 Arrivals and registration  \n13:30 Welcome by moderator Erika van der Linden (young climate activist)  \n13:35 Short introductions  \n\nEcology and geopolitics – Richard Wouters (Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks) \nResource hunger and the Global South – Marius Troost (Both Ends) \n\n13:55 Interactive discussion  \n14:30 Break  \n14:40 Breakout sessions  \n\nCircularity and post-growth \nSustainable and just mobility \nResource partnership with the Global South  \nTechnology and geopolitics \n\n15:40 Break  \n16:00 Closing panel with Erika van der Linden\, Richard Wouters\, Trineke Palm (Wetenschappelijk Instituut ChristenUnie)\, Tishana Martijn (Jonge Klimaatbeweging)\, René Kleijn (University Leiden)\, and others  \n17:00 Closing and drinks  \n  \nPracticalities\nDate and time: Friday\, 14 June\, from 13:30 to 17:00 CEST  \nLocation: De Kargadoor\, Oudegracht 36\, Utrecht  \nLanguage: Dutch  \nRegistration: This event is open to the general public\, but prior registration is required. SUMMARY:How Can Greens and Progressives Influence NATO? (Örebro)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nGreen and progressive parties across Europe have historically held a sceptical view towards NATO\, with many deeming such a military alliance incompatible with disarmament and a shift towards non-military solutions to international conflicts.   \nYet with Sweden next in line to join NATO\, there is a need to reckon with and respond to the current political reality\, without losing track of the underlying values that guide our peace and security stances.  \nTo contribute to this crucial European debate\, GEF commissioned a report\, with the support of Cogito\, that maps out stances towards NATO across Europe\, but more importantly explores how greens and progressives can influence NATO in line with their own visions and priorities.    \nParticipants at this seminar will receive copies of the working paper and discuss its findings\, guided by insights and reactions from our expert panel.  \n\nProject background\nWith a focus on the Eastern flank of Europe\, the 2022-2023 debates series seeks to enrich green and political ecology discourse. The series aim to provide spaces to hear the voices of green actors\, peace and security experts\, as well as partners from different regions. With the support of Cogito\, GEF is delving specifically into the question of NATO and anchoring the green movement’s debates on this topic within its many historical and geographical dimensions.  \n\nSpeakers\n\nBodil Valero – former Green MEP\, G100 Global Chair on Security and Defence  \nHenrik Jalalian – Director of Swedish green think tank Cogito \nJacob Risberg – Green MP and international spokesperson \nSien Hasker – Programme Manager at the Green European Foundation \n\n\nPracticalities\nDate and Time: November 18th (20:30 – 21:15 CET)  \nLocation: Olof Palmes Torg 1\, 702 22 Örebro. Room: Mältaren  \nLanguage: Swedish (with brief introductory remarks in English)    \n\nThis seminar is organised by the Green European Foundation\, with the support of Cogito and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Green Growth vs. Degrowth (Utrecht)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nCan our economy continue to grow if we want to respect planetary boundaries and give developing countries room to meet the needs of their inhabitants?   \nYes\, say proponents of ‘green growth’. To do so\, we need strict climate and environmental policies that drive technological innovation and reduce the most polluting forms of consumption. The drive for green growth underpins the European Green Deal.   \nNo\, say the advocates of ‘de-growth’. Decoupling economic growth from ecological damage is an illusion. Therefore\, rich countries must abandon the growth imperative\, scale back overproduction and overconsumption and focus on collective well-being. The degrowth movement is gaining popularity among scientists and activists.   \nIn this seminar\, we explore the differences and similarities between ‘green growth’ and ‘degrowth’ with proponents of both schools of thought as well as Green and Labour politicians. What facts and trends do the two movements invoke? What are the underlying visions of society? Is there any overlap between the political agendas?  \nProject background\nThis event is part of GEF’s Geopolitics of Post-Growth project\, which explores the tensions between degrowth/post-growth and geopolitics. The project aims to ignite a conversation between critics of economic growth and progressive thinkers on foreign and security policy\, who now often operate in separate circuits. It aims to find solutions beyond naïve anti-militarism and convenient belief in green growth.   \nThe geopolitical ramifications of (de)growth will be discussed in a follow-up seminar.  \nSpeakers and Programme\n14:00 – 14:10 Opening by moderator Suzanne Kröger (MP GroenLinks)  \n14:10 – 14:20 Presentation by Diederik Samsom (head of cabinet of European Commission VP Frans Timmermans)  \n14:20 – 14:30 Presentation by Karolien van Teijlingen (social geographer Radboud University Nijmegen)  \n14:30 – 14:40 Audience Q&A  \n14:40 – 14:50 Presentation by Wim Naudé (professor technology & innovation management RWTH Aachen University)  \n14:50 – 15:00 Presentation by Hans Stegeman (chief economist Triodos Bank\, columnist)  \n15:00 – 15:10 Audience Q&A  \n15:10 – 15:50 Discussion  \n15:50 – 16:00   Closing words  \nPracticalities: \nDate and Time: Friday 19 May\, from 14:00 to 16:00 CEST \nLocation: De Kargadoor\, Oudegracht 36\, Utrecht\, Netherlands \nLanguage:  Dutch   \nRegistration: Participation is free of charge. SUMMARY:How to protect a Post-Growth Europe? (Sofia)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nGreen policies that respect planetary boundaries and allow the Global South to develop seem incompatible with unlimited economic growth in the EU. We need a realistic scenario for a future in which we consume more sparingly but live better together\, a scenario that concepts of degrowth and post-growth can offer. \nThe war in Ukraine completely changed the global landscape. Today\, the idea of ending GDP growth in the EU encounters new and important geopolitical impediments with power and wealth being measured in military capacity. Can a degrowth Europe build strength and resilience in this context? \nTo tackle this issue\, the Green European Foundation is organising a series of expert meetings across Europe\, including the present one with the support of BlueLink in Bulgaria. Outcomes from these expert meetings and further research and interviews will feed into a final publication to be launched in autumn 2023. \nWe invite Bulgarian researchers\, activists and policy makers with an interest in green policies and geopolitics to present papers and/or engage in an analytical discussion defined by the following analytical framework: \n\nWhat are the tensions and synergies between managed degrowth within the EU and the EU’s ability to achieve its geopolitical objectives\, such as promoting security in a broad sense?\nCan tension be mitigated? If so\, how?\nHow would it be possible to optimize the possibilities that degrowth offer?\n\nNot every question has a definitive answer and we promote creativity\, analytical thinking and fresh approaches to the challenge. \nSpeakers and Programme \nFurther details to be announced.  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: April 28th\, 14:00 – 17:00 CET \nLocation: House of Europe – 124\, 1000 Sofia Center\, Sofia\, Bulgaria \nLanguage:  The seminar will be held in Bulgarian\, but presentations in English are acceptable. \nRegistration: Researchers\, experts\, activists or politicians wishing to join the discussion with academic or conceptual contributions\, opinions and opinions\, or as discussants on the subject\, are invited to register for participation via this link. Only registered participants will be admitted to the event. \nIf you have any further questions or wish to discuss your potential contribution\, please reach Pavel Antonov\, PhD at tel. 0888 704 661 or by e-mail at office@bluelink.net.  \n  \n\nThis expert seminar is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of BlueLink and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. SUMMARY:Transition to Energy Democracy (Skopje)
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nDuring this interactive sessions on Energy democracy\, we will discuss the current energy policies in North Macedonia and the need for a more democratic and inclusive society. As part of this exercise\, we will address the state of democracy in the EU and candidate countries\, looking at possible economic alternatives and considering the climate change urgency. \nContext\nThis is the second event with our Energy Democracy project in 2022. With Europe’s deepening energy crisis and the chronic coal dependency of the Balkan region\, the need for renewable energy is more evident than never before. On this event we will elaborate on previous experiences in Europe involving transitions in the energy sector to stimulate positive change in North Macedonia and the region. The discussions should result in a workshop to discuss and learn more about the prosumer and energy cooperative models\, the use of renewable energy and its potential for the economy. \nGEF and Sunrise are pioneers on the topic of Energy Democracy in North Macedonia and again with this second event in 2022 we will continue to discuss energy transformation towards participatory\, inclusive and a decentralised green economy through the expansion of the Energy Democracy concept. Together we will contribute to the debates and practices on EU level with experiences and challenges from the Balkans. \nSpeakers\nSpeakers will be announced shortly.\n\nProgramme\n15:00                   Welcome and introduction \n15:10-15:20       Session with speaker on Energy Democracy \n15:20-16:00      Workshop sessions on prosumer models in the EU and the region of the Western balkans \n16:00-16:20      Coffee break \n16:20-17:00      Workshop sessions on energy cooperatives with European experiences and regional approach \n17:00-19:00        Dinner and discussion \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 15th November\, 3pm \nLocation: Skopje \nLanguage: The primary language is Macedonian but simultaneous translation in English will be provided.  \nAudience: Closed event with invitation only. \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Sunrise and with the financial support of the European parliament to the Green European Foundation.  \n

SUMMARY:The Future of Romania’s Forests
DESCRIPTION:Context\nLess than 2% of Europe’s land mass is still in its initial state: untouched by human activity. Tropical forests are not the only ones being cut or burnt down for human consumption. The same happens at an alarming rate with the last virgin forests and contiguous forest areas in Central and Eastern Europe. Corruption\, organised crime behind the destruction of forests and the billion-euro industry benefiting from illegal logging provide the framework for the big lumber companies to increase their profits. \nIn Romania\, the problem of clearing forests is not new\, and despite more stringent legislation in recent years\, the problem persists. The economic pressure to cut as much as possible on the one hand\, and the complicity of local authorities who get their share on the other\, prepare the ground for a criminal network that acts against climate\, nature and men–and does not even shrink back from murder. \nWood is an extremely valuable resource for Romanians. Over 50% of Romania’s households depend on wood-burning for heating. Plans to develop a sustainable heating system in the country are lagging behind and gas\, its most prominent alternative\, is leaving Romanians with unattainable expenses. The green transition in Romania is therefore an environmental imperative\, but also a social one. \nIllegal logging\, extensive use of biomass by various industries and an aggressive lobbying network are behind ecosystem destruction\, and displaced wildlife in the European last virgin forests. The EU’s ambitions to achieve climate neutrality by 2050\, while ensuring a just and socially fair transition\, will pose a real challenge. However\, it will also present a much needed opportunity to reverse the long-term effects\, and the devastating impact that spans way beyond the Romanian national borders. \n  \nAbout the event\nBuilding on its 2-year project Deforestation in Europe\, the Green European Foundation will organise a 1-day event in Iasi\, Romania on 9 July 2022. \nThe event will bring together civil society representatives\, activists\, concerned citizens and policymakers from Romania and abroad\, with the following main objectives: \n\nBuild common understanding on the complex systemic disfunction behind illegal logging and loss of biodiversity in Romania’s protected forests\, while placing the issue in the larger European context.\nDiscuss Romania’s energetic future and formulate recommendations for an energy system in accordance with national and European climate targets.\nProvide a space for experience sharing and connection between local civil society actors from Romania and other parts of Europe.\n\n  \nSpeakers\n10:00-10:15 Welcome words – Ioana Banach-Sirbu\, GEF Managing Director \n\n10:15-11:30 Plenary session – Illegal Logging and the Future of Romania’s Energy System \nThomas Waitz – Green MEP and EGP Co-chair \nCătălina Rădulescu – Lawyer\, Agent Green \nKalliopi Stara – Researcher\, Department of Biological Applications and Technology\, University of Ioannina \nMihai Diac – Founder\, Codrii Iaşilor (Old Woods of Iasi) \nModerated by: Teia Ciulacu – President\, Viitor Plus \n\n11:30-12:00 Coffee break \n\n12:00-13:00 Parallel sessions  \n\n\n\nWORKSHOP I \nBârnova Repedea Forest\, the Natural Parc of Iasi \nCătălina Rădulescu – Lawyer\, Agent Green \nThis workshop is aimed at depicting the efforts of the civil society in protecting the aree of Iasi and will discuss the importance the forests have in the life of the local citizens and the need to ensure the protection and conservation of the biodiversity while tackling climate change. \n  \nWORKSHOP II \nGreen Activism – From A to Z \nIon Holban – Activist\, Ambassador of Codrii  Iasilor & Ciprian Polenschis Activist\, Member of Codrii Iasilor \nIn this workshop\, participants will learn about practical tools and methods to engage in green activism\, from forestry management monitoring and petitioning to media relations. \n  \nWORKSHOP III \nRigas Tsiakiris – Forest Ecologist\,  Scientific Committee of the Green Institute Greece \nTeia Ciulacu – President\, Viitor Plus \nProductive reforestation for living rural landscapes  \nDuring this workshop\, participants will learn about selective management of forests in Greece and community afforestation projects in Romania. SUMMARY:Energy Sobriety: Holy Grail of the Green Transition?
DESCRIPTION:About the event:\nWelcome to the Collaborative University a platform that consists of several sessions revolving around a specific theme. The registered participants meet on a few Saturdays during the year to work on the given subject\, receive advice from experts in the field and visit relevant initiatives. The aim? To gain and exchange knowledge and to sharpen one’s critical mind… \nDesigned by our partner Etopia\, GEF is hosting the third and final session of this series on the notion of energy sobriety–seeking to identify the reasons for but also the obstacles to reduce energy consumption in our society. \nParticipants will work in plenary and smaller groups\, enjoying background reading and information\, a collaborative space and participative methodology\, and input from invited speakers and experts. Key insights from the day will be harvested in the form of podcast interviews and summary reflections for the general public. \nContext\nThis event is part of the GEF transnational project Climate Emergency Economy: Rethinking Demand. Building on several years of work exploring what it means to create an economy fit for the climate emergency\, GEF and its partners are this year focusing on the crucial question of how to reduce demand for energy and materials. With the support of Green House Think Tank\, Etopia\, and Green Foundation Ireland\, we will explore how to frame rethinking demand politically\, and articulate clear plans for demand reduction so green narratives are better grounded in reality and a shared vision of hope.  \nSpeakers\nMathilde Szuba – Political sociologist\, Sciences Po Lille\, Institut Momentum. \nLuc Semal – Political scientist\, Centre d’Écologie et des Sciences de la Conservation (CESCO)\, Institut Momentum. \nProgramme\nThe morning sessions will cover governance in the context of the end of energy abundance – possible consequences for institutions and potentially for the functioning of representative democracy as we know it. This is followed by lunch and group work in the afternoon.   \nPracticalities\nDate: June 4th (9:00 – 16:30)  \nLocation: Auberge de jeunesse Jacques Brel\, Rue de la Sablonnière 30\, Brussels  \nLanguage: French  \nRegistrations for the collaborative university are now closed. If you wish to learn more\, please email arnaud.deflorenne@etopia.be.   \n\nThis session of the Collaborative University is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Etopia and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Climate Emergency Economy at the Green Hub
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nAlongside several partners\, GEF has been investigating the requirements of a so-called Climate Emergency Economy. We’ve focused on the questions and sectors that pose a particular challenges such as agriculture\, transport infrastructure and trade\, and hydrogen for the green transition. \nWhich sectors should be prioritised for limited “green hydrogen” and what are the geopolitical implications of hydrogen imports? How does zero carbon relate to food sovereignty and the EU’s Farm to fork strategy? And what needs to change in transport infrastructure investments in Europe and overseas (e.g. through foreign aid) to ensure a zero-carbon future? \nJoin our sessions at the COP26 Green Hub to engage in this debate and learn more about our findings! \n\nContext\nThis webinar is part of the project Climate Emergency Economy–organised by GEF with the support of Green House Think Tank\, Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks\, Green Foundation Ireland\, and the Foundation for Environment and Agriculture. SUMMARY:Just Transition for All?
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThis three-day seminar will serve as a place to discuss opportunities and limits of just transition and explore its transformative potential. \n During the seminar\, we will: \n\nprovide a first approach to the concept of just transition\,\ndiscuss the role of trade unions and workers\,\ndiscuss the transfer from extractive to regenerative economy\,\nexplore just transition to a European and global level in solidarity\,\nLink it to recovery plans and European Green deal\,\nExplore opportunities for decent jobs\,\ndiscuss specific conditions of just transition at European semi periphery\n\nAlso\, we will dive much deeper into just transition in the transport sector\, where we will learn and discuss under which conditions sustainable mobility can become an example of just transition policies. \nWe see this seminar as one milestone in a systemic approach to concepts and practices of just transition in this part of Europe\, and an important milestone in establishing epistemic communities in this field. \n\nThis project is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of the Institute for Political Ecology in cooperation with the Heinrich Böll Foundation\, Prague office\, and the European Climate Initiative with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. SUMMARY:Possibilities for Fair\, Sustainable and Carbon Free Tourism (Belgrade)
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nThe outbreak of the COVID-19 virus significantly affected the number of tourists and overnight stays in Serbia\, and tourism in Belgrade was particularly affected. The number of tourists in March 2020 in Belgrade decreased by 65.2% compared to March 2019\, while in April 2020 the number of tourists decreased by 98.8% compared to April 2019; in May 2020\, a reduced number of tourists was recorded compared to May 2019 with 95.7%. \nThe COVID-19 pandemic especially affected the number of foreign tourists who\, due to the closure of state borders and prevention measures\, did not come to Belgrade. After the mitigation of measures to fight the COVID-19 pandemic\, an increase in the number of domestic tourists was noted in Serbia\, but that recovery was limited in Belgrade\, which was the main focal point of the infected in Serbia. In June 2020\, the total number of tourists in Belgrade was 83.8% lower compared to June 2019\, this trend continued in July with 88.2% and in August with 85.8% less tourists compared to the same months during 2019. \nThe almost complete shut down and uncertainty that emerged in the tourism and hospitality sector at the global and European level\, as well as in Serbia and the city of Belgrade\, left room for reflection on how to make the tourism sector more fair\, sustainable and carbon neutral after the COVID-19 virus pandemic. \nContext:\nThis event is part of the Green European Foundation’s Fair and Carbon Free Tourism transnational project. This project aims to identify and create conditions for collective action against the detrimental social and environmental impacts of tourism. In many countries\, tourism is a generator of GDP and fully employed in a growth oriented consumerist economy. However\, there is an underestimated environmental and social impact of tourism. \nProgramme:\n\n18:00-18:10 Introduction\n\nPredrag Momčilović – Platform for Theory and Practice Zajedničko \n\n18:10-18:20 The project and the situation in Croatia\n\nNikolina Rajković – Institute for Political Ecology \n\n18:20-18:30 Presentation of research report about Fair and carbon free tourism in Belgrade\n\nNikoleta Petković and Elene Petrovska – Zajedničko \n\n18:30-20:00 Panel debate about possibilities for fair\, sustainable and carbon free tourism in Belgrade\n\nNatalija Stojmenović – Don’t Let Belgrade D(r)own \nMiloš Baković Jadžić –Party of the Radical Left \nVladimir Pajić – Movement of Free Citizens \nModeration: Predrag Momčilović – Zajedničko \nPracticalities:\nWhen: Wednesday\, 4th November (18:00 – 20:00 CET) \nWhere: Cultural center Grad\, Braće Krsmanović 4\, Belgrade \nA live stream will also be provided via this link. \nThis event will be primarily in Serbian. No translation is foreseen.  \n— \nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Zajedničko and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation

SUMMARY:Making Basic Income a European Reality (Tampere)
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nThe long lived dream of a basic income has gained relevance in Europe in the last few years. Changing working life and an uncertain economy has sparked the need for social security reforms in many countries. The Finnish basic income study has received world wide coverage. The goals have long been established but how do countries move forward to make it actually happen? Is a European BI possible? Should we approach BI incrementally? \nIn this seminar\, taking place at the 30th European Green Party Council\, guest speakers will discuss the status of basic income developments in different countries and outline paths to make the utopia a reality. Both national and Europe-wide points of view will be discussed. The seminar is a chance to spread ideas among the participants and help implement change across Europe. \nSpeakers\nVia video: Jamie Cooke\, The RSA Scotland \nPathways to a Basic Income in Scotland and the UK \nJane Millar\, University of Bath\, UK\nUniversal Credit: designing and implementing the UK’s new working-age benefit and how this differs from Basic Income \nKim Evangelista\, Belgian Green party (Ecolo)\nA Basic Income for the young: Inventing tomorrow’s solidarities \nLukas Korpelainen\, Visio – Finnish Green Think Tank\nA hybrid model for basic social security and the steps for the next 10 years in Finland \n  \nSpeaker Biographies\nJane Millar OBE\, FBA\, FAcSS is Professor of Social Policy in the Institute for Policy Research at the University of Bath\, UK. Her current research examines the impact of Universal Credit on couples\, focusing on labour market decisions and family budgeting. \nKim Evangelista is a policy advisor for the Belgian Green party (Ecolo). He is in charge of economic\, social and fiscal policies. He worked on a concrete Basic Income proposition included in the political program of the party for the May 2019 election. He studied economics and political sciences\, and was later a researcher in applied economics. He worked in both the private and public sector \nLukas Korpelainen is a research coordinator at the Finnish Green think tank Visio. Earlier this year he wrote a report on improving the basic social security system in Finland. The work includes a new model for a basic income combined with means-tested benefits and a realistic first step with economic simulations. He has also helped the Finnish Green party develop its social security policies. \nJamie Cooke is the head of The RSA Scotland and leads on the development of the RSA’s activity in Scotland\, through innovative partnerships\, projects and programmes. He is also a leading advocate\, writer\, and speaker on the subject of basic income. SUMMARY:Green Academy Winter Seminar - Degrowth Kaleidoscope: Real-Existing Utopia(s) (Plitvička Jezera)
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nThe Green European Foundation\, in cooperation with the Institute for Political Ecology\, the Open Society Initiative for Europe and the Heinrich Böll Stiftung – Prague office\, is organising the 3rd edition of the Green Academy Winter Seminar. \nThe seminar will focus on the ongoing debates around the Green New Deal and degrowth concepts and practices in the context of the climate emergency. Deeper avenues to be explored will look at the theoretical\, political and practical level and identify convergencies and conflicts. The seminar will allow for exchanges to develop strategies for concrete change and policies. \nParticipants will be introduced to “degrowth doughnut” visualisations\, underlining the cultural excesses and shortfalls in a democratic construction of a degrowth transition. \nA “kaleidoscopic” perspective of the movement and various interconnections and differences will explore specific sectors where degrowth can make a fundamental difference\, while also considering the significance of the emerging Green New Deal policies on both sides of the Atlantic. \nDemands for a socially just and planned transition need to be articulated precisely in order to head off reactionary responses to the climate emergency. And this we shall redesign as we go\, for the further Europeans slide into climate chaos without establishing a convivial sociality\, the more likely we are to contend with authoritarian and inegalitarian powers to which emergency conditions often give rise. \nThe politics of this historical dynamic – the actors\, alliances\, institutions and social processes creating degrowth transitions is the subject of lively debate in Europe and beyond\, shaping up right before our eyes. Given the fact that in 2020 Croatia will take over the EU Presidency\, we will aim to explore ways how our thinking and actions can become turning points for Europe to be able to take another course. \nProgramme\nFRIDAY 8th OF NOVEMBER \n15:00 DEPARTURE FROM ZAGREB (ORGANISED BUS TRANSPORT – PARKING NEXT TO MAIN TRAIN STATION (ACCROSS IMPORTANE CENTRE ENTRANCE) \n17:15 ARRIVAL TO HOTEL – CHECK-IN AND REGISTRATION \n18:00 WELCOME NOTE AND INTRODUCTION \nVedran Horvat\, IPE Zagreb\, Head/Board of Directors\, GEF \nNino Lejava\, HBS\, Head of Prague office \nJagoda Munić\, FoEE\, Director\, Bruxelles/GA program council \nDanijela Dolenec\, Faculty of Political Sciences\, Associate Professor\,Zagreb/GA program council \nPresentation of working groups: Clara Dellaire-Fortier\, Nikolina Rajković\, Andro Rilović\, Ajda Pistotnik \nEVENING CONVERSATION: ”DEGROWTH MOVEMENT\, THOUGHT AND ACTION IN THE MIDST OF CLIMATE COLLAPS” \nEvening conversation with Vincent Liegey\, Cargonomia\, Hungary/France \n20:00 DINNER \nSATURDAY 9TH OF NOVEMBER \n09:00 MORNING LECTURE – Tiziano Distefano \n”Social cohesion in the ecological transition” \n10:00 MORNING PANEL \nGREEN NEW DEAL AND DEGROWTH – REAL-EXISTING UTOPIAS IN ACTION \nWith: Sean Sweney (TUED)\, Pawel Wargan (DiEM25)\, Marija Bartl (UA)\, Jagoda Munić (FoEE) \nModerated by: Danijela Dolenec and Vedran Horvat \n11:30 COFFEE BREAK \n11:30 WORKING GROUPS 1 \n\nLABOR\, DEMOCRACY AND DEGROWTH (Clara Dallaire-Fortier & Nina Rajković with Dario Farcy\, Sean Sweney and Marija Bartl)\nDEGROWTH AND DEBT (Ajda Pistotnik with Mark Perreira and Tilman Hartley)\nDEGROWTH (&) MUNICIPALISM (Andro Rilović with Eugen Vuković\, Eleanor Finley\, Vincent Liegey)\n\n13:30 LUNCH BREAK & WALK \n17:30 WORKING GROUPS 2 \n\nLABOR\, DEMOCRACY AND DEGROWTH (Clara Dallaire Fortier & Nina Rajković with Dario Farcy\, Sean Sweney and Marija Bartl)\nDEGROWTH AND DEBT (Ajda Pistotnik with Mark Perreira and Tilman Hartley)\nDEGROWTH (&) MUNICIPALISM (Andro Rilović with Eugen Vuković\, Eleanor Finley\, Vincent Liegey)\n\n19:30 DINNER \n21:00 DONUTS AND WINE EVENING TALK ON SUSTAINABILITY ON EUROPEAN (SEMI)PERIPHERY – \n\nMladen Domazet \nClara Dallaire-Forter\nJenny Ufer\nBranko Ančić\n\nSUNDAY 10TH NOVEMBER \n09:00 MORNING LECTURE \nPetr Jiehlička\, Open University\, UK \nDegrowth lessons from the European East: self-provisioning\, sharing and the resilient food system \n10:00 WORKING GROUPS 3 \n\nLABOR\, DEMOCRACY AND DEGROWTH (Clara Dallaire Fortier & Nina Rajković with Dario Farcy\, Sean Sweney and Marija Bartl)\nDEGROWTH AND DEBT (Ajda Pistotnik with Mark Perreira and Tilman Hartley)\nDEGROWTH (&) MUNICIPALISM (Andro Rilović with Eugen Vuković\, Eleanor Finley\, Vincent Liegey)\n\n11:30 BREAK \n12:00 REPORTS FROM WORKING GROUPS \n12:30 Post-growth awakening for EU: positioning degrowth agenda and international cooperation on climate action within the context of EU Croatian Presidency \nModeration: Dražen Šimleša \n13:15 Closing \n13:30 Lunch \n14:30 Departure to Zagreb \n17:00 estimated arrival \n\nThis event is a cooperation between the Institute for Political Ecology\, the Green European Foundation\, the Open Society Initiative for Europe and the Heinrich Böll Stiftung Prague office\, with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Food as a Commons (Cork)
DESCRIPTION:Event Background\nAs part of the transnational project Fair and Healthy Food\, GEF aims to reach different actors and bring them together to explore alternative solutions and reforms to the European Union’s Common Agricultural Policy and how to redesign food systems around agroecological principles. \nAlongside exploring examples of cities developing their own outstanding food policies\, the project will also examine how regional sustainable food systems can revitalise rural communities. \nAbout the Event\nRising public concern around climate change and biodiversity loss has led to increasing attention on our food system as both a cause but also a potential contributing solution to environmental breakdown. While efforts are underway to reform European food and agricultural policies in order to better protect nature and rural livelihoods\, growing numbers of people are becoming actively involved in reshaping food systems at local level. \nSuch efforts are demonstrating a creative resurgence of ideas and practices of how we can recover the multidimensional values of food as a public good rather than allow it to remain as a means for private corporate profit\, and to help reduce our own personal environmental footprint and retrieve some control over our food supply. \nThe event proposes that food is not only a vital source of personal well-being but offers a route toward greater citizen engagement. Growing food in cities offers numerous benefits for the urban environment and community resilience and can improve availability of fresh\, nourishing produce especially for those for whom access is restricted by income. Above all\, it enables us to re-establish the central purpose of a food system: to produce food sustainably to feed people adequately. \nThis day-long event is an opportunity to pool ideas\, share experiences and celebrate the power of community in growing\, cooking and eating food. \nYou are encouraged to book early for this event as we will restrict numbers in order to facilitate an engaged\, constructive and convivial experience. \nProgramme\n09:15 – 09:30\nGather in the Lecture Room of Nano Nagle Place \n09:30 – 11:00\nTwo keynote presentations will address new thinking that is helping us to redesign civic food systems led by Henk Renting\, Researcher and Lecturer in Urban Food Systems at AERES University of Applied Sciences\, Almere\, the Netherlands and Orla O’Donovan\, Lecturer at the School of Applied Social Studies\, University College Cork. The session will be introduced and chaired by Colin Sage\, Co-Founder and former Chair of the Cork Food Policy Council. \n11:00 – 12:45\nIn order to enable full engagement by participants this session will be organised as a World Café\, and convened by Klaus Harvey of Transition Town Kinsale. Coffee and nibbles will be available and there will be short presentations as inputs to deliberations from Food Historian Regina Sexton\, GIS Expert Tomás Kelly and others. \n12:45 – 13:30\nReport back from table hosts\, discussion and elaboration of final action points. \n13:30 – 14:00\nWalk to St. John’s Central College\, Sawmill Street\, Cork (a short 5 minute walk). \n14:00 – 16:00\nWe will join the ‘street feast’ that is being hosted by La Cocina Pública\, a Chilean theatre group that will be based in the Cork South Parish neighbourhood as part of the Cork Midsummer Festival. Please note that the registration fee will include lunch here. \nSpeakers \n\nHenk Renting\nResearcher and Lecturer in Urban Food Systems\,\nAERES University of Applied Sciences\, Almere\, The Netherlands\nOrla O’Donovan\nLecturer at the School of Applied Social Studies\,\nUniversity College Cork\nColin Sage\nCo-Founder and former Chair of the Cork Food Policy Council\n\nLa Cocina Pública / The Public Kitchen\nHoused in a shipping container La Cocina Pública is a mobile kitchen that brings people together through theatre\, food and dining.\nTravelling from Chile through cities and neighbourhoods in Europe in search of local recipes\, aromas\, practices and customs\, La Cocina Publica will work with Cork’s South Parish residents to share stories and food that will be enjoyed at delicious collective dining events – with Chilean and Cork artists\, storytellers\, singers and musicians providing you with memories and entertainment. Your ticket includes a meal\, but to encourage a family-friendly atmosphere for all ages\, no alcohol will be served at these events. \nTickets\nThis event costs €20 per person (plus booking fee)\, which covers entrance to all events on Saturday\, including morning coffee as well as lunch during the Cocina Pública street feast. \nPlease secure your place by booking here – early booking is RECOMMENDED as numbers will be restricted in order to facilitate an engaged\, constructive and convivial experience. \n\n

SUMMARY:Jobs in a Changing Climate (Dublin)
DESCRIPTION:Context\nWith a changing climate\, many traditional jobs will be lost all over Europe\, as a just transition to less carbon emission intensive industries is inevitable. It will be vital for all stakeholders\, such as policy makers\, trade union representatives\, civil society organisations\, think tanks and businesses to establish a dialogue and to come up with new solutions to those challenges – and the Green movement can spearhead this process. \nAbout the event\nAs part of the transnational project “Strengthening Climate Targets\, Creating Local Climate Jobs”\,  this conference will contribute to the discussion within the Irish society and among the key stakeholders on how to ensure a just transition to Zero Carbon and create local climate jobs across the country. \nThe event will also feature results of the ongoing research of the Green European Foundation and its partners to draft and launch strategies for local investment to create more climate jobs in Ireland. \nOne of the practical examples that will be discussed is the proposed closure of three peat burning power stations in the Midlands and the effect on the livelihoods of 400 workers. Studies have been carried out on how the transition to a low carbon society in the UK will create sustainable jobs in Sheffield and Isle of Wight. Also we will look at the Lucas Plan\, where workers devised viable alternatives to redundancies\, using their skills to develop socially useful products and services. The implementation of the Circular Economy will also affect jobs\, positively and negatively\, and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. \nSpeakers\nDuncan Stewart\, Environmentalist\, Broadcaster\, and Chair\, Green Foundation Ireland \nTommy Simpson\, Project Coordinator Green Foundation Ireland and former President Dublin Council of Trade Unions \nJonathan Essex\, Project Coordinator\, Greenhouse Think Tank United Kingdom \nPeter Simms\, Researcher\,Greenhouse Think Tank United Kingdom \nAdrian Kane\, Public Administration and Community Division Organiser\, SIPTU \nSinead Mercier\, Researcher\, Just Transition \nYvonne O’Callaghan\, Strategic Organiser\, SIPTU Trade Union Ireland \nJoseph Curtin\, Senior Fellow\, Institute of International and European Affairs \nThe input by the speakers will be each followed by Q&A sessions to allow for full participation in the event of those attending. \n\nThe event is free of charge but registration is required. To secure your spot follow this link. \nRegistration for the event on the day starts at 9:30. \nFor more  information on  the conference\, please contact info@greenfoundationireland.ie
