SUMMARY:Sustainable Batteries
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nDuring the event we will reflect on: \nDo we have enough raw materials in Europe to produce the required amount of batteries? \nCan we mine the necessary rare metals such as lithium\, cobalt and rare earth without the risk of major damage of the environment? \nDon’t we risk depending on the purchase of precious metals from developing countries or dictatorial regimes\, where mining neglects the dignity of workers and excessively devastates nature? \nGiven the lithium deposits in the Czech Republic\, can the production of batteries be an opportunity for Czech companies on the European or world market? Do we have technologies that can recycle metals from obsolete batteries\, making the energy storage sector part of the circular economy? Is there room for Czech companies in the field of battery recycling? \nThese are some of the questions we will address in the presentations and discussion. \nSpeakers:\n\nEwa Sufin-Jacquemart\, Strefa Zieleni Foundation (Poland)\, Member of the Board of the Green European Foundation – opening the topic: the need for precious metals for energy and digital transition in a European and global context\nDoc. ing. Tomáš Kazda\, Brno University of Technology – raw materials and technologies for battery production\, challenges and expected development\nAlicia Valero\, Head of Industrial Ecology at the Research Center for Energy Resources and Consumption (CIRCE Institute)\, Zaragoza\, Spain – Precious metal recycling options and technologies for the production of batteries for the automotive industry\nRNDr. Petr Kratochvíl\, Ecobat – collection and recycling of batteries in the Czech Republic\, current state and expected development\, opportunities for Czech companies in the field of precious metal recycling\nPavel Čmelík\, Director of the ČEZ a.s. Development Project Management Department – how a big Czech energy company is considering entering the energy storage and battery production sector\, including the provision of the necessary sources of raw materials\n\nThe event will be moderated by Martin Ander\, Chairman of the Institute. \n  \nPracticalities:\nWhere: Online platform – ZOOM \nDate and time: Wednesday\, 28th April from 15:00 to 17:00 CET. \nAudience: this webinar is open to the general public \nRegistrations:  Click here \nLanguage: simultaneous interpretation Czech – English will be provided for this event \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Institute for Active Citizenship \nand with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. SUMMARY:Dark shades of green: The political struggle for the narrative of the young environmental movements in the Western Balkans
DESCRIPTION:About this event\nThe right-wing has for a long time been associated with climate denial and justifications of industrial pollution. However\, this rhetoric seems to be changing\, and environmental issues are becoming central to right-wing politics. In the Western Balkans\, environmental problems are emerging as a mobilizing factor across different political actors and social movements. Issues that are traditionally claimed by the progressive greens\, are now coming into focus of the populist right\, opening new fields for reaching and engaging otherwise passive citizens. Driven by the unsustainable re-industrialization\, the growth in the construction sector\, and new\, often foreign investments in mining\, fossil fuels\, land grabs and destruction of nature\, environmental threats are ever more mobilizing the citizens on the anti-establishment wave. Catching sight of the loss of the EU perspective and the increased post-truth crisis during the pandemic conditions\, the right wing is not missing their chance. The struggle for nature is often painted with nationalist and traditionalist narratives. \nOn the other hand\, the greens nor the left do not seem to be keeping pace with these developments\, appearing unfit to offer credible alternatives to the populist narratives of the local grassroots movements. The environmental civil society initiatives\, and the social justice and human rights organizations\, are not connected enough\, and their knowledge and experiences are atomized. In addition\, many actors are insisting that the environment is intrinsically an “apolitical” issue\, accusing each other of “hijacking” it. These processes are not only happening in the Western Balkans\, however there is an important specific context related to the recent history and genealogy of the green movement. In the context of a blurred EU perspective for the Western Balkans\, and in the absence of strong green and left alternatives\, will the right wing populism succeed in appropriating the topic of environmental justice? How can the progressive forces be enabled to take the lead in environmental struggles? \nThe discussion is opening one of the important questions of many about the future of green politics in Europe. We are happy to use this opportunity to present Serbian translations of the publications with extended analysis of political ecology from the greens perspective – the Green European Journal editions: A World Alive: Green Politics in Europe and Beyond and 2049: Open Future. \n  \nSpeakers:\nBalša Lubarda is an environmental sociologist specializing in environmental communication\, radicalism\, right-wing politics and political ideologies. He is also a Doctoral Fellow and the Head of Ideology Research Unit at the Centre for Analysis of the Radical Right\, as well as a member of the Emancipatory Rural Politics Initiative (European branch). His research has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as Environmental Values\, Sociologia Ruralis and other non-academic outlets\, including New Eastern Europe\, Fair Observer\, Open Democracy\, Undisciplined Environments\, Altre Economia etc. Balša has also provided commentary for The BBC Radio 4 and The New York Times. \nDamir Zejnulahović is a PhD student of sociology at the Faculty of Philosophy of Belgrade University. He completed his undergraduate studies of sociology at the same faculty\, where he took courses in “Culture” and “Politics” modules during his undergraduate studies. He got his Master degree in sociology\, at the same faculty\, defending his master thesis „Ideological underpinnings of a conservative Srpski pokret Dveri”. The focus of his research interests are political sociology\, sociology of knowledge\, historical sociology\, critique of ideology. \nIva Marković is an environmental activist and researcher in political ecology from Belgrade. Her current focus is on water as a common good and on developing alternative policies for sustainable governing of natural wealth. Her interests are in commons\, natural resources management\, social impact of climate change\, degrowth\, just energy transition and ecofeminism. She is involved in organizing left and green actors and networking inside the environmental movement. She is a co-founder of Right to Water (Pravo na vodu) initiative\, organization for political ecology Polekol\, Women For Environment network\, and active in the Save the Blue Heart of Europe campaign against small hydro projects in the Balkans. \n  \nModerator: Aleksandra Tomanić (tbc) \n  \n  \nPracticalities:\nThis event takes place on Zoom\, please register and join via this link. \nSimultaneous interpretation Serbian – English will be provided for this event.

SUMMARY:Metals in the Energy and Digital Transition: Limits and Impacts
DESCRIPTION:[ENG]\n – para leer la descripción en ESP\, vean más abajo –\n  \nThere is no doubt that the climate crisis makes the energy transition to renewable sources indispensable. The 2015 Paris Agreement was a historic milestone\, at least on paper\, in terms of reducing emissions and boosting renewable energy. But some issues have not been sufficiently resolved\, issues linked to the metals required for the “green” and digital technologies on which the energy transition is based. \nIn this session we will talk about the mineral limits of the energy transition and the implications that these limits bring with them. Are we willing to accept the impacts of mining for the benefit of the energy transition? What is the situation of the mining project in Cáceres? Does the current Spanish Mining Law of 1973 guarantee clean and responsible mining? \n\nContext:\n \nThe technologies that make the energy transition possible are based on a wide variety of metals and huge quantities of them. Photovoltaic panels\, wind turbines or electric cars would not exist without them. Tellurium\, cobalt\, copper\, gallium\, indium\, lithium\, nickel and zinc are some of these essential elements\, all of which are at risk of being in short supply in the future\, either because they are scarce in nature or because they are controlled by few countries. \nGiven this fact\, a key question is how to supply the metals demand of the energy transition. In addition to diversifying imports\, one of the EU’s objectives is to strengthen its strategic autonomy by increasing its internal supply capacity. In Spain alone\, in recent years\, applications have been submitted for several hundred new mining operations\, which have been met with significant social protest. An emblematic case\, due to its proximity to the historic centre of Cáceres\, a World Heritage Site\, and due to the environmental and social impacts that it may entail\, is the San José de Valdeflores open-pit mining project for the extraction of lithium. \n\n  \nSpeakers:\n\nAlicia Valero is a chemical engineer and head of the Industrial Ecology group at the Research Centre for Energy Resources and Consumption (CIRCE Institute).\nJuantxo López de Uralde is a Member of the Spanish Parliament for Unidas Podemos and president of the Ecological Transition Commission.\nSantiago Martín-Barajas is a member of Ecologistas en Acción and expert on water\, mining\, energy\, etc.\n\n  \nThe session will be moderated by Cárol García\, who is a journalist and political scientist. She is a specialist in international relations and cooperation. She has worked in Senegal and Palestine and is currently communications coordinator at Alianza por la Solidaridad – ActionAid. She is a member of the board of trustees of Fundación Transición Verde. \n  \nPracticalities:\nRegistrations are now open – Próximos eventos: Los metales en la transición energética y digital (transicionverde.es) \nSimultaneous interpretation Spanish-English will be provided for this event \n\nThis event was organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Transición Verde and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Climate\, Economics\, and Gender
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nWomen and minorities are more likely to be affected by the impacts of climate change and environmental crises\, but are also key to bringing about change in their communities. Countries with more diversity in decision-making have more ambitious climate policies\, while the empowerment of women is also closely linked to better economic and wellbeing outcomes for all. \nNevertheless\, women have been too often side-lined in the narratives of history and power\, and their labour performed in service of society and the planet is often structurally undervalued or pushed to the margins. This webinar\, organised with the support of the Green Economics Institute\, will examine those points where climate\, economics\, and gender converge\, providing thought-provoking insights to how climate feminists can reclaim these narratives and counter patriarchal exploitation of the planet before it is too late. \n\nContext\nThis is the first of four public webinars as part of the project “Feminists in the Climate Movement\,” organised by GEF with the support of Visio\, Green Economics Institute\, Oikos\, and Fundacja Strefa Zieleni. With a closed training programme for selected Feminist Climate Ambassadors as well as a series of public events\, the project seeks to build capacity among (potential) climate leaders\, while highlighting the gendered aspects and impacts of the climate crisis to a broader audience. \nSpeakers\nKatrine Marçal – Swedish writer and journalist\, and author of the book “Who Cooked Adam Smith’s Dinner?” \nRosalind Miles – writer\, broadcaster and journalist\, and author of the book “The Women’s History of the World” \nDr. Sarah Parry – senior lecturer at the University of Edinburgh \nin conversation with Lynne Franks – writer\, advocate\, communications strategist\, and founder of SEED Women’s Leadership Platform \nProgramme\n16:00 – 16:15 Introduction \n16:15 – 16:45 Setting the scene – Katrine Marçal on economics and patriarchy\, and the fundamental flaws at the basis of mainstream economic thinking. \n16:45 – 17:15 Invisible women – Rosalind Miles on how women’s contributions are underacknowledged in historical narratives\, and how we can change that. \n17:15 – 17:30 Break \n18:00 – 18:30 Mobilising for Change – Leena Ahmed and Bianca Madison-Vuleta in conversation with Lynne Franks on empowering women to enhance wellbeing for all. \n18:30 – 19:00 Closing – open discussion\, next steps\, and how to get involved. \nPracticalities:\nDate and time: Monday\, March 29th from 16:00 to 19:00 CEST. \nAudience: This webinar will take place in English and is open to the general public. \nRegistration: Please register in advance here. \nOnline events require extensive preparation\, and speakers and moderators deserve fair compensation for their work. SUMMARY:We are what we Eat: For Healthy and Sustainable Food
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nOur first Green-Red Dialogue of 2021 will tackle the sustainable production and consumption of food\, from a multi-disciplinary approach. Because everything is fundamentally connected\, from the mistreatment of animals and lack of respect for the vital cycles of nature to job insecurity in the countries that supply us. From landscape changes and deforestation to the air we breathe and consequences on our health. \nThe COVID-19 pandemic has forced us to slow down and reassess our consumption patterns\, highlighting the importance of local trade and local production and making everyone a bit more aware of the risks involved. With the help of our speakers\, we will explore these issues further\, hoping to take advantage of this moment to consolidate some beneficial changes as we move beyond the crisis. \nContext:\nThe Green-Red Dialogues began in 2020 as a way to reflect on current issues from explicitly green and social perspectives. The challenges we face as a result of the COVID-19 crisis are new and unpredictable. Today it is more urgent than ever to reverse the consequences of a capitalist system that not only brought forth the pandemic but has also caused irreparable cracks in our planet. A capitalist system that has been shown to foster social inequality and that assaults the Earth. \nWe cannot fall into fatalistic discourse and convey the message that all is lost and that\, consequently\, we cannot do much more. Instead\, we must disseminate proposals and make the citizens of the European Union aware that another option is possible – that green policies are compatible with the economy\, progress\, and development. \nWith this in mind\, the Green Red Dialogues return in 2021\, once again providing the space for European policy makers\, academics\, activists\, and citizens to address the challenges of today – combining current affairs and in-depth analysis to spark vibrant discussions about greener\, more socially just solutions. \nSpeakers:\n\nFrancisco Guerreiro – MEP Greens/EFA\, Vice-Chair of Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development\nAmaranda Herrero – Coordinator of the Barcelona World Sustainable Food Capital\nRaimon Roda – Chief of Services of Green Infrastructures at AMB\nMireia Barba – Member of ESPIGOLADORS\nFerran Berenguer – Head of Organic Agriculture at Unió de Pagesos\n\nWelcome by Susanne Rieger\, co-president of the Green European Foundation\, and moderation by Marc Rius. \nPracticalities:\nWednesday\, March 24th (18:00 – 19:30) \nThe webinar is free and open to the general public. There will be simultaneous interpretation in Spanish and English. \nPlease register in advance via this link.

SUMMARY:Understanding growth in different ways – the implications of transcending the growth paradigm in Europe
DESCRIPTION:About this event\nFor the launch of the Ten thoughts on Growth report\, written by the economist and environmental researcher Mikael Malmaeus and published by GEF and Cogito\, we will be holding a webinar to discuss the concept of growth from different angles. When the vaccine has reached out in society we can expect a recovery of the economy. The European Green Deal is one of many initiatives on how we are to invest to come to a green recovery\, but will we keep within planetary boundaries? \nThe discussion around sustainability and growth often ends up in confusion and locked positions. The purpose of this report is to clarify where we should reach consensus\, and where we have the essential lines of conflicts in our thoughts on growth. \n  \nSpeakers\n\nMikael Malmaeus – Author of the report\, board member in Cogito and researcher at The Swedish Environmental Research Institute\nKlas Eklund – Senior Economist and author with a background as a Chief Economist of SEB. 2001-2010 he was a member of the European Commission’s Group of Economic Policy Analysis. He has written several books on economic growth and sustainability\nMagda Rasmusson – economist and political expert with the minister of financial markets and former spokesperson for the Young Greens in Sweden\n\n  \nModerator\n\nMaria Wetterstrand – CEO of Milton Europe in Brussels\, opinion leader on environment and policy\, former leader of the Green Party Sweden\n\n  \nPracticalities\nWhen? Wednesday March 24th 18.00-19.00 \nWhere?  https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89869853908 \n\nLanguage\nPlease note this webinar will be in Swedish language only

SUMMARY:Goodbye feminism? How the pandemic is retraditionalising gender roles
DESCRIPTION:About this event\nSince March 2020\, social life has somehow resembled a “Pandemian Rhapsody”: “caught in a landside\, no escape from reality”\, and\, just like Freddy Mercury in his song\, we could in fact wonder if the current times are “the real life or just fantasy”. In any case\, daily realities paint an unambiguous picture. \nWomen’s liberation has been progressing for a century in Europe\, and yet in just one year\, Covid-19 has acted as a catalyst for political and societal failures. Even in Europe\, it seems that we are still generations away from equal rights and structural justice for women. Amending a law does not mean that sexism vanishes from the head of the people. On the contrary\, women are still far too often confronted with outright misogyny. \nWith this talk\, we aim to depict how one year of Covid has shaped society and how it is affecting our everyday lives all over Europe – especially those of women. What do we need to consider – as women\, and Green politicians – and how do we take it from here? \n  \nSpeakers\nThe floor will be given to: \n\nRicarda Lang\, Federal Deputy Chairwoman and Spokesperson on women’s affairs for BÜNDNIS 90/DIE GRÜNEN\, Germany\nLiljana Popovska\, Former Member of the North Macedonian Parliament and Leader of the Green Party – DOM\, Board Member of the NGO Green Institute\, North Macedonia\nHilal Gencay\, Author of the report “Being a Woman during the Pandemic”\, Women´s Human Rights – New Solutions Association\, Turkey.\n\n“Being a feminist means fighting for equality\, for the expansion of rights\, for the dismantling of stereotypes\, and for an end to violence.”\n08/03/2021\, Constanza Alonso\, local politician\, Argentina \n  \nPracticalities\nThe webinar will take place on 24th March from 15:30 – 17:00 CET\, and will be in English with German interpretation. \nThe event will be held on Zoom. To register\, please head to https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_y_CValNETAuq4oFkniWGZwhttps://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_y_CValNETAuq4oFkniWGZw \n  \n\nThis webinar is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of FREDA – die Akademie and with the financial support of the European Parliament.

SUMMARY:Metals in the Energy and Digital Transition: The EU Facing an Uncertain Scenario
DESCRIPTION:[ENG]\n –  Información en español\, más abajo.\n\n  \nThere is no doubt that the climate crisis makes the energy transition to renewable sources indispensable. The 2015 Paris Agreement was a historic milestone\, at least on paper\, in terms of reducing emissions and boosting renewable energy. But some issues have not been sufficiently resolved\, issues linked to the metals required for the “green” and digital technologies on which the energy transition is based. \nIn this context\, will it be possible to guarantee a sufficient and clean supply of the metals required for a green and digital Europe? What does the EU propose to achieve its strategic autonomy? What are the keys that will allow us to look to the future with optimism? \n  \nContext:\nThe climate crisis makes it necessary and urgent to replace fossil fuels with renewables\, but we must not forget one key issue: the “green” and digital technologies that will make this possible are based on non-renewable materials and require many more metals than fossil fuels\, metals that are finite and\, in many cases\, scarce. \nThe distribution and scarcity of rare metals is altering the global geopolitical order and the European Union will be no stranger to its consequences. In the 21st century\, the country that dominates their export and consumption is China\, which also has a monopoly on a group of metals known as rare earths. \nThe West’s dependence on China is not limited to raw materials\, but has extended to green and digital technologies\, which complicates a situation of which the European Union is fully aware. \n  \nSpeakers:\nHenrike Hahn is a German Member of the European Parliament since 2019. As speaker for industrial policy and member of the European Parliament’s Committee on Industry\, Research and Energy (ITRE)\, she has extensive knowledge of the industry sector. Ms Hahn is the Green Shadow rapporteur for the own initiative report “A European strategy for critical raw materials”. She is a member of the delegations for relations with China and the United States. For many years she worked as strategy consultant for technology-oriented companies in Paris and Munich. Henrike is passionate about greening the industry and the social-ecological transformation of the economy. \nGuillaume Pitron is a French journalist (Le Monde Diplomatique\, National Geographic\, etc.) and documentary maker. In 2018\, he published his first book\, “The Rare Metals War: The Dark Side Of the Energy Transition and Digitalization”. From Chinese rare earth metals\, oil extraction in Alaska\, to Sudanese gum arabic and khat trading in Djibouti\, he focuses his work on commodities and on the economic\, political and environmental issues associated with their use. He has authored around 100 reports\, investigations and documentaries across more than 40 countries In 2017 he won the Erik Izraelewicz Prize for best investigative report of the year\, awarded by the leading daily newspaper Le Monde\, and the award for Best Economic Book of the year in 2018. \nRichard Wouters is a researcher at Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks\, the think tank of the Dutch Greens. His main interests are the circular economy\, climate policy and technology. He’s leading the Green European Foundation’s project “Metals for a Green and Digital Europe”. Also for the Green European Foundation\, he wrote the “Charter for the Smart City.” \nThe session will be moderated by Cárol García\, who is a journalist and political scientist. She is a specialist in international relations and cooperation. She has worked in Senegal and Palestine and is currently communications coordinator at Alianza por la Solidaridad – ActionAid. She is a member of the board of trustees of Fundación Transición Verde. \nPracticalities:\nRegistrations are now open – Próximos eventos: Los metales en la transición energética y digital (transicionverde.es) \nSimultaneous interpretation Spanish-English will be provided for this event. \nThe ZOOM link and technical details will be sent to all registered participants on Monday 15th March.  \n\nThis event was organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Transición Verde and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Governance Strategies for Cooling Cities: Cases of Athens and Istanbul
DESCRIPTION:About\nThis research focuses specifically on improving the understanding of the capabilities and needs that cities have for an effective adaptation to heatwaves\, which are expected to become more frequent with the increasing average global temperature while adaptation to the changing climate has many different aspects.  To this end\, after laying a short account of the relation between cities\, climate change\, and heatwaves\, we will first try to assess the efforts of cooling Athens\, conducted within the “100 Resilient Cities” initiative between 2014-2019. Then\, drawing from the experience in Athens\, we will explore the potential policies and measures relevant to the case in Istanbul and conduct a discussion on effective governance for the effective implementation of these policies.” \nWe will hold a meeting on Tuesday\, 2nd of March\, to share the topics covered in the article with our stakeholders and to discuss the responsibilities and policy proposals of municipalities and city actors to cooling cities.” \nSpeakers:\nCem İskender Aydın\, Article author\, Boğaziçi University\, Institute of Environmental Sciences \nBegüm Aydın\, Corresponding article writer Boğaziçi University\, Institute of Environmental Sciences \nÜmit Şahin\, Istanbul Policy Center\, Senior Specialist and Climate Change Studies Coordinator \nProgramme\n13.00-13.30 Introduction of the article \n13.30-13.50 Questions and comments on the report \n13.50-14.00 Heat waves in cities: Policy suggestions for local governments \n14.00-14.30 Free discussion \nRegister Here \nLanguage:\nThis event will be in Turkish language \n\nThe Cities as Places of Hope Project is carried out by the Green European Foundation with the support of green organizations in the following countries: Spain (Transición Verde)\, Catalonia (Nous Horitzons)\, Croatia (The Institute for Political Ecology-IPE)\, Belgium (Oikos)\, North Macedonia (Sunrise)\, and Turkey (Green Thought Association). The Cities as Places of Hope Project started in 2019 with a focus on progressive city networks that appear as key factors in the creation of a positive narrative about the future of Europe. Project activities that were carried out in 2020 aimed to bring together progressive and transformative trans-local city networks\, to connect them and to facilitate exchange between them\, ultimately contributing to the development of a positive narrative about the future of Europe.

SUMMARY:Just Transition - The Good Ancestor
DESCRIPTION:About the event\n \nThe only way to move from an extractive economy to a regenerative one\, is through a just transition. This means making sure that we leave nobody behind. This also means embracing solidarity with future generations. Just Transition is about shifting our perspective from short-termism to considering the planet we leave to our descendants. In his latest book The Good Ancestor\, philosopher Roman Krznaric develops this core point magnificently. He dives into history and the human mind to show that we can think and plan in the long-term. How will the grandchildren of our grandchildren remember us? \nFortunately\, more and more time rebels – the people who are fighting for intergenerational justice – are putting this holistic plea on the agenda. Drawing on radical innovations from around the world\, Krznaric celebrates those who are reinventing democracy\, culture and economics so that we all have the chance to become good ancestors and create a better tomorrow. \nAfter the presentation\, the author will be joined by Philsan Osman\, student\, aspiring writer and community builder for a discussion on past\, present and future interdependence and solidarity. \nContext:\nJUST TRANSITION as transnational project aims to tackle the challenge of transforming from an extractive to a regenerative economy in a just and equitable way to find the necessary support among the population. It seeks to show that the green family\, including Green European Foundation in its specific role\, is a leading actor in the development of futureproof politics and policies\, developed in a sensitive way that keeps in mind local specificities. \nSpeakers:\nRoman Krznaric\, philosopher and author of The Good Ancestor \nProgramme:\n\n20:00 – 20:40 Book presentation\n20:40 – 21:00 Discussion\n21:00 – 21:30 Q&A\n\nPracticalities:\nPlease register via the following link. \nTo support the organisation of this webinar\, please consider a contribution on account number BE07 8901 5430 1466 (BIC: VDSP BE 91 – vdk bank). SUMMARY:Social Dividends as a Form of Basic Income
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nThe COVID-19 pandemic has more than ever provoked the debate around Universal Basic Income as a potential policy solution to a host of challenges. Yet just as there is a diversity of arguments in support of basic income\, there is a proliferation in models and pathways to implementation – each with its specific intricacies and consequences. \nThis one-hour webinar will explore some of these paths towards a basic income at the European level. Specifically\, M.Soc.Sci Johanna Perkiö will present on social dividends as a potential form of basic income\, based on her 2020 report for Vasemmistofoorumi (The Left Forum). Perkiö’s larger work has been on the history of discussions about UBI in Finnish society. \nAfter the presentation\, Lukas Korpelainen will comment on Perkiö’s findings and reflect further on the topic\, followed by audience questions. \nContext:\nAfter gathering comprehensive expertise and setting up transnational networks through a three-year long project on universal basic income\, GEF and its partners continue building on the outputs and successes of this work on the topic. \nThe transnational project ‘Change of Mindset – UBI\, Climate and Social Change’ seeks to spark a stronger civil society dialogue to bring about the change of mindset needed to raise acceptance of universal basic income among the public and to deepen the debate on our conceptions of productivity and work. Together\, we dive into the exploration of UBI as a tool of the urgently needed ecological transition and part of social security in a (post-)pandemic\, climate change world. \nSpeakers:\n\nJohanna Perkiö – project researcher at the University of Tampere and former chairperson of BIEN Finland \nComments by: Lukas Korpelainen – chairperson of the Finnish Greens’ social security working group and author of the GEF publication Basic Social Security 2030. \nPracticalities:\nThis webinar will take place in English\, and will be livestreamed to Facebook and YouTube. Participants can leave comments or questions via the chat. Register here to receive a reminder email.

SUMMARY:European Positions on Unconditional Basic Income II
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nAt a time when many people have lost their jobs and the economic outlook is uncertain\, an unconditional basic income (UBI) sounds tempting. In November\, with the support of FREDA and the Green Future Academy Austria\, GEF invited Barbara Prainsack to discuss her new book on an Unconditional Basic Income “Vom Wert des Menschen.” \nTo build further on that discussion\, we are inviting new perspectives to the table. Bishop Benno Elbs brings in the perspective of Christian social teaching\, Markus Koza brings in the trade union point of view\, and Barb Jacobson will provide a European perspective with her precise knowledge of the international discussion. \nTogether\, they will address key questions like: Is basic income a contemporary solution to our social and economic problems? Do national trials make sense or is European cooperation necessary? And can we even afford it? \nContext\nAfter gathering comprehensive expertise and setting up transnational networks through a three-year long project on universal basic income\, GEF and its partners continue building on the outputs and successes of this work on the topic. \nSpeakers\n\nBarbara Prainsack – Professor of Political Science\, University of Vienna\, author\nBenno Elbs – Bishop of the Diocese of Feldkirch\nBarb Jacobson – Welfare Advisor\, London\nMarkus Koza – green social speaker with union background\n\nModeration by Eva Häfele\, social scientist \nPracticalities:\nThis event will take place on Zoom and will be primarily in German\, with some English consecutive translation. SUMMARY:Green-Red Dialogues: For a Green and Social European Recovery Plan
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nThe economic impact of COVID-19\, on top of health and social dimensions\, has been particularly challenging for economies such as Spain\, with a dependent and weak industrial fabric\, and heavily dependent on foreign production. \nWe want to explore the European recovery fund as an opportunity to propose a new industrial model\, based on a true Green Deal that offers a powerful alternative to what we have today. A model that places ecology\, sustainability\, and the transition towards clean industries at the very centre of what is to be achieved\, while promoting social and territorial cohesion and encouraging greater cross-European solidarity. \nWe will approach this third dialogue from different perspectives\, learning first-hand what the proposals are from the trade union world from the voice of its top representative\, Javier Pacheco. We will also hear from German Green MEP Henrike Hahn on what is happening at the European level. Finally\, we get a local view from Laura Campos\, Mayor of Montcada i Reixac\, one of the territories where industry is the economic base of the municipality and therefore highly affected by this pandemic. \nWith them\, we will debate and make proposals to tackle a real transformation. \nContext:\nThis event is part of the Green Red Dialogues. The main purpose of this series of talks is to reflect on current issues from a green and social perspective. At a time when we have to face the global challenges as a result of COVID-19\, it is important to reflect on a green way out of the crisis. The current capitalist system has demonstrated that it promotes social inequality and that it attacks the planet\, and therefore\, all the inhabitants of the earth. We must urgently reverse the effects of the climate crisis and promote socially just and environmentally friendly models. We need to ensure that these proposals reach citizens\, and explain that it is compatible with the economy\, progress\, and development. \nThe first dialogue dealt with green responses to the health and climate crisis\, and the second explored Universal Basic Income as a possible solution in addressing our current COVID-19 crisis and others to come. \nSpeakers:\n\nJavier Pacheco – General Secretary of CCOO Catalonia\nHenrike Hahn – MEP Greens/EFA\, Committee on Industry\, Research\, and Energy\nLaura Campos – Mayor of Montcada i Reixac\n\nWelcome by: Susanne Rieger – co-president of the Green European Foundation \nModerator: Marc Rius \nPracticalities:\nDate: December 22nd (17:00 – 18:30 CET) \nThis event will take place in Spanish and English\, with simultaneous translation provided via Zoom. \nYou can register for and join the Zoom call directly via this link.

SUMMARY:Between Extractivism and Decolonization: The European Hunger for Resources
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nIn this event\, we invite everyone to join our conversation about natural resources\, extractivism and deep-sea mining. Our aim is both to inform and discuss with European and international citizens. \nContext:\nOpening up new mines is diametrically opposed to curbing our ecological greed and threatens mankind and the planet. Free trade leads to increased deforestation\, land grabbing and violations of human rights\, such as violence against indigenous communities. Deep-sea mining leads to ecological destruction in those few places on earth that have not yet been plundered by the growing economy. \nIf the EU focuses unilaterally on access to precious resources\, there is a threat that a colonial exploitation logic will continue. The alternative is a real just transition\, one that emphasizes on human rights and the provision of a good life for all within the boundaries of the planet. \n  \nSpeakers:\nWies Willems\, Broederlijk Delen \nAn Lambrechts\, Greenpeace Belgium \nSarah Vanden Eede\, WWF Belgium \nModerator: Dirk Holemans\, Oikos \n  \nProgramme:\nIntroduction by Wies Willems (20 min) \n– An Lambrechts and Sarah Vanden Eede will then dive deeper into deep-sea mining (30 min) \n– Q&A (30 min) \n  \nPracticalities:\nRegister your participation via info@oikos.be \nThis webinar will be held in Dutch. \nCall for Action: More info on our Facebook event and website \n—— \nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Oikos Think Tank and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Transformation Towards Energy Democracy
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nIn this event we will underline the need for a more democratic and inclusive society by addressing the state of democracy within the EU and its candidate countries. SUMMARY:Just Transition to Degrowth Society
DESCRIPTION:About the Event: \nThis webinar will offer space for debate among representatives of various organisations from the North and South and from both sides of Atlantic. They’ll discuss how just transition in Europe can be shaped through futureproof policies\, for the benefit of decent working conditions and the well being of all\, both in the EU and at global level. Join this webinar to learn more about Just Transition.  \n  \nContext: \nJUST TRANSITION as a transnational project aims to tackle the challenge of transforming from an extractive to a regenerative economy in a just and equitable way to find the necessary support among the population. It seeks to show that the green family\, including GEF in its specific role\, is a leading actor in the development of futureproof politics and policies\, developed in a sensitive way that keeps in mind local specificities.  Project partners are working together in conducting research on the Just Transition and drafting a paper on its different dimensions.   \nIn a world characterised by multi-level governance\, just transition initiatives are needed at the different levels: from companies and sectors\, over cities and regions\, to nations and the European Union. At all these levels\, specific challenges\, groups of stakeholders and power relations make clear that there is not a ‘one size fits all’ model of just transition. This also shows the need to document cases at the different levels\, in different regions.  \nWe are confronted now with both a crisis and employment emergency at the same time\, because millions of jobs are at risk. In order to achieve a carbon neutral Europe we have to be doing much more then we are doing at the moment. Climate policy has to be much more ambitious\, more investment in\, for example \,green and efficient energy is necessary. Just transition is about fair sharing of all the costs and burdens that come with this very ambitious transformation. Outcomes of this transitions should be (green) jobs that follow the pillars of decent work in a society that is carbon neutral and nobody is left behind\, while at the same time taking into consideration solidarity with other parts of the world and the future generations.  \n  \nSpeakers: \nMaruška Mileta\, FoE Croatia  \nOxana Lopatina\, independent researcher\, energy analyst\, Moscow  \nClara Dellaire Fortier\, doctoral candidate\, Lund University  \nMladen Domazet\, Institute for Political Ecology  \n  \nModerated by:  \nVedran Horvat\, Institute for Political Ecology  \n  \nProgramme:  \n17:00 – 17.10 Introduction: Vedran Horvat\, IPE  \n17:10 – 17.25 Maruška Mileta\, programme coordinator\, FoE Croatia  \n17:25 – 17:40 Oxana Lopatina\, energy analyst  \n17:40 – 17.55 Clara Dellaire Fortier\, doctoral candidate\, Lund University  \n17.55 – 18.10 Mladen Domazet\, Institute for Political Ecology \n18:10 – 18.30 Discussion  \n  \nPracticalities: \nWednesday\, 16th December\, 5:00 PM  \nThis is an online event\, please join via zoom link:  https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89384973759  \nEvent will take place in English.  \n  \n——\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Institute for Political Ecology and with the financial support of the European parliament to the Green European Foundation
