SUMMARY:GEF Green Horizons Academy - Good for Nature (Belgrade)
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nThe GEF Green Horizons Academy (GHA) is an annual space for discussion and idea development around the future of environmental and social policies in Europe. This year’s edition\, Good for Nature\, will focus on advocating for strong biodiversity protection policies and empowering civic engagement in environmental efforts.  \nIn 2025\, nature protection activists and green minded individuals in general face mounting challenges. The EU’s Biodiversity Strategy 2030 is under pressure\, environmental laws are threatened by corporate lobbying\, and civic movements face increasing repression amid a growing trend of authoritarianism. Meanwhile\, in Serbia and across the Balkans\, local movements struggle to protect ecosystems from extractivist industries\, such as lithium mining and hydropower projects. In this context\, GHA: Good for Nature will bring together civil society representatives\, grassroots activists\, EU policy experts\, and decision-makers to strategize and build knowledge on defending nature and strengthening environmental democracy.  \nThe two-day conference will feature a public panel debate\, a field trip to explore local environmental challenges\, workshops\, and networking opportunities.  \nProject Background\nGEF GHA: Good for Nature is part of the Green European Foundation’s broader mission to promote a sustainable and socially just future. This year’s edition follows the 2024 discussions on extractivism and the European Green Deal’s external impacts\, shifting the focus toward biodiversity and nature restoration as central pillars of Europe’s green transition\, as well as avoiding the clashes that can happen between the fight for biodiversity and the development of sustainable energies.  \nProgramme\n\nDAY 1: PUBLIC EVENT – no pre-registration needed\n16:00 Arrival of the participants and public\n17:00 Panel 1:  Biodiversity and consistency in EU policies \n\nIgor Kalaba – Center for Environment\, (Bosnia and Herzegovina)\nBelma Šestović – Wildlife Montenegro\nNataša Đereg – National Convention on European Union in Serbia (NCEU)\nVanja Jakšić – WWF Adria (Belgrade)\n\nModerator: Žaklina Živković\, Polekol \n18:30 Panel 2: Ecosystems\, local communities and decarbonisation \n\nIvan Milosavljević – Rangers of East Serbia\nAleksandar Dragićević – Eco activist\, Montenegro\nMilja Vuković – Blue and Green initiative\nAndrey Ralev – Bankwatch SEE\nMarko Mirč – Institute for Biological Research “Siniša Stanković”\n\nModerator: Iva Marković\, Polekol \n20:00 Dinner for the participants and speakers – at the venue \nDAY 2: CLOSED DOOR – only selected applicant\n09:00 Workshop 1: Sandra Jovanović – Biodiversity Expert – EU policies for the people!\n10:30 Workshop 2: Discussions around case studies with the participants and lessons learned from the day before’s panel discussions\n12:00 Field trip to Bara Reva\, Lunch\n14:00 Ana Džakić\, NGO Bela Čaplja (White Heron) – Presentation about the local struggle\, Networking opportunities\n18:00 Trip back to Belgrade\n19:00 Dinner & Goodbyes \n\n\n\nPracticalities\nDate: 28-29 March 2025\nLocation: Belgrade\, Serbia / online live retransmission on our partner’s instagram channel\nVenue: KC Grad\, Braće Krsmanović 4\, Belgrade\, Serbia\nLanguage: English\nCosts coverage: We will provide catering during the event and cover any travel costs within Serbia. SUMMARY:Geopolitics of Degrowth in a Conflicted Europe (Leipzig)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nGreen policies that respect planetary boundaries and allow the Global South to develop seem incompatible with unlimited economic growth in the EU. We need a realistic scenario for a future in which we consume more sparingly but live better together. A scenario that could be possible within a degrowth context. \nThe war in Ukraine completely changed the geopolitical landscape. Today\, the idea of ending GDP growth in the EU encounters new and important impediments\, with power and wealth being measured in military capacity. Can a degrowth Europe build strength and resilience in this context? \nTo tackle this issue\, the Green European Foundation with the support of BlueLink is organising a workshop in Leipzig\, as part of a series of expert meetings across Europe. The outcomes from these meetings and further research and interviews will feed into a final publication to be launched in the autumn of 2023. \nWe invite researchers\, activists and policy makers – particularly from Central and Eastern Europe and Ukraine – with an interest in green policies and geopolitics to present perspectives\, experiences\, analytical or activity reports and to engage in a discussion around the following questions: \n\nHow does degrowth within the EU affect the EU’s ability to achieve geopolitical objectives like providing security\, and what are the resulting tensions and synergies?\nCan such tensions be mitigated? If so\, how?\nHow would it be possible to optimize the possibilities that degrowth offers\, including for democratic flourishing and a safer Europe and world?\n\nNot every question has a definitive answer and we promote creativity\, analytical thinking\, and a fresh approaches to the challenge. \nProject Background\nThis event is part of GEF’s project Geopolitics of a Post-Growth Europe\, which explores the tensions between degrowth/post-growth and geopolitics. The project aims to ignite a conversation between critics of economic growth and progressive thinkers on foreign and security policy\, who now often operate in separate circuits. It aims to find solutions beyond naïve anti-militarism and convenient belief in green growth. Find out more about the project and its findings at geopoliticspostgrowth.eu. \nPracticalities\nThis GEF workshop will take place as part of the International Roundtable 2023 held by the Peaceful Revolution Foundation in Leipzig. You can find out more information about this conference here.  \nDate and time: October 11th\, 2023 (14:30 CET)  \nLocation: Leipzig\, Germany and online (hybrid event)  \nLanguage: English  \nRegistration: Open to all interested participants\, but please register in advance via this link. Please use the ‘Questions and Comments’ field to specify your scope of interest or proposed intervention. You will receive a confirmation email after registration.  \nIn case you want to attend the workshop in person in Leipzig\, please also email office@bluelink.net by Friday\, October 6th.   \n  \n\nThis event is organized by the Green European Foundation with the support of BlueLink. It will take place as part of the Revolutionale International Round Table 2023 held in Leipzig by the Peaceful Revolution Foundation.   \n

SUMMARY:Feminist Leadership in the Ecology Movement (Istanbul)
DESCRIPTION:About the event:\nWomen are everywhere! The women’s struggle continues on the streets\, in public arenas\, and also within the green movement. How are women and LGBTQI+ individuals represented in the ecology movement? What are the obstacles and challenges for women and LGBTQI+ representation? What are the needs to increase the number of organized women and LGBTQI+ in the ecology movement in Turkey and across Europe? \nIn light of these initial questions\, we will discuss the intersectionality of the green movement and feminism under the frame of our “Feminists in the Environmental Movement” project\, and explore what we can do to strengthen diverse representation by nurturing and sustaining feminist organisation in the ecology movement. \nThis day-long workshop will enable participants to take the first steps and gain a better understanding of the shared struggle\, while listening to the experiences of local ecology\, women’s\, and LGBTQI+ organisations in the context of the intersectionality of ecology and feminism. \nContext:\nThis workshop is part of Feminists in the Environmental Movement\, a GEF transnational project that seeks to stimulate conversations around (the intersections of) gender and environmental justice across Europe. SUMMARY:Transition to Energy Democracy (Skopje)
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nDuring this interactive sessions on Energy democracy\, we will discuss the current energy policies in North Macedonia and the need for a more democratic and inclusive society. As part of this exercise\, we will address the state of democracy in the EU and candidate countries\, looking at possible economic alternatives and considering the climate change urgency. \nContext\nThis is the second event with our Energy Democracy project in 2022. With Europe’s deepening energy crisis and the chronic coal dependency of the Balkan region\, the need for renewable energy is more evident than never before. On this event we will elaborate on previous experiences in Europe involving transitions in the energy sector to stimulate positive change in North Macedonia and the region. The discussions should result in a workshop to discuss and learn more about the prosumer and energy cooperative models\, the use of renewable energy and its potential for the economy. \nGEF and Sunrise are pioneers on the topic of Energy Democracy in North Macedonia and again with this second event in 2022 we will continue to discuss energy transformation towards participatory\, inclusive and a decentralised green economy through the expansion of the Energy Democracy concept. Together we will contribute to the debates and practices on EU level with experiences and challenges from the Balkans. \nSpeakers\nSpeakers will be announced shortly.\n\nProgramme\n15:00                   Welcome and introduction \n15:10-15:20       Session with speaker on Energy Democracy \n15:20-16:00      Workshop sessions on prosumer models in the EU and the region of the Western balkans \n16:00-16:20      Coffee break \n16:20-17:00      Workshop sessions on energy cooperatives with European experiences and regional approach \n17:00-19:00        Dinner and discussion \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 15th November\, 3pm \nLocation: Skopje \nLanguage: The primary language is Macedonian but simultaneous translation in English will be provided.  \nAudience: Closed event with invitation only. \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Sunrise and with the financial support of the European parliament to the Green European Foundation.  \n

SUMMARY:Energy Sobriety: Holy Grail of the Green Transition?
DESCRIPTION:About the event:\nWelcome to the Collaborative University a platform that consists of several sessions revolving around a specific theme. The registered participants meet on a few Saturdays during the year to work on the given subject\, receive advice from experts in the field and visit relevant initiatives. The aim? To gain and exchange knowledge and to sharpen one’s critical mind… \nDesigned by our partner Etopia\, GEF is hosting the third and final session of this series on the notion of energy sobriety–seeking to identify the reasons for but also the obstacles to reduce energy consumption in our society. \nParticipants will work in plenary and smaller groups\, enjoying background reading and information\, a collaborative space and participative methodology\, and input from invited speakers and experts. Key insights from the day will be harvested in the form of podcast interviews and summary reflections for the general public. \nContext\nThis event is part of the GEF transnational project Climate Emergency Economy: Rethinking Demand. Building on several years of work exploring what it means to create an economy fit for the climate emergency\, GEF and its partners are this year focusing on the crucial question of how to reduce demand for energy and materials. With the support of Green House Think Tank\, Etopia\, and Green Foundation Ireland\, we will explore how to frame rethinking demand politically\, and articulate clear plans for demand reduction so green narratives are better grounded in reality and a shared vision of hope.  \nSpeakers\nMathilde Szuba – Political sociologist\, Sciences Po Lille\, Institut Momentum. \nLuc Semal – Political scientist\, Centre d’Écologie et des Sciences de la Conservation (CESCO)\, Institut Momentum. \nProgramme\nThe morning sessions will cover governance in the context of the end of energy abundance – possible consequences for institutions and potentially for the functioning of representative democracy as we know it. This is followed by lunch and group work in the afternoon.   \nPracticalities\nDate: June 4th (9:00 – 16:30)  \nLocation: Auberge de jeunesse Jacques Brel\, Rue de la Sablonnière 30\, Brussels  \nLanguage: French  \nRegistrations for the collaborative university are now closed. If you wish to learn more\, please email arnaud.deflorenne@etopia.be.   \n\nThis session of the Collaborative University is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Etopia and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Green Recovery: Reflecting on the political landscape and experience from neighbouring countries
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nThis workshop brings together speakers from Slovenia\, Croatia and Austria to share experiences on environmental struggles and green policy building in post – Corona era. The workshop aims to identify the commonalities and differences between participating countries\, and to discover shared practices and future approaches in environmental activism. The participants will try to establish both in-country and regional collaboration for environmental struggles. \nContext\nSlovenian environmental activists have achieved some major successes in mobilising to protect the environment in the face of harmful legislation and corporate interests. One of the major achievements was the recent successful referendum on water\, which prevented the adoption of harmful legislation. However\, such environmental struggles are also taking their toll on individual activists and their institutions. Activists often feel alone\, they feel lack of public support and no partnership with political subjects. This workshop will try to bring activists together and help them find common approaches and enrich the collaboration within Slovenia but also with activists in Austria and Croatia. Additionally\, the workshop will provide insight into political experiences of Greens and discuss how a collaboration between activists and politicians could be established to achieve environmental goals and Green Recovery goals in Slovenia and in the European Union more widely. \n\n  \nGuests speakers:\n\nOlga Voglauer\, European Green Party.\nJelena Miloš or Iva Ivšić\, BRID Baze za radničku inicijativu i demokratizaciju (tbc).\nUrša Zgojznik\, Ekologi brez meja\nUroš Macerl\, Ekokrog.\n\n\n\n  \nProgramme\n15.00 -15.45: Introduction \nUrša Zgojznik: Future Slovenian environmental struggles and Green Recovery \nUroš Macerl: How to win an environmental referendum? \n  \n15.45 -16.00: Coffee break \n  \n16:00 -17:00: Presentations of international speakers \nOlga Voglauer: How can activists and politicians collaborate in environmental struggles? \nJelena Miloš or Iva Ivšić: How to establish cross-border collaboration between environmental activists? \n  \n17:00-17:15: Coffee break \n  \n17:15 -18:30: Workshop \nGroup work of participants on ideas: How to establish cross-border collaboration between environmental activists? \n  \nPracticalities\nAudience: This workshop will take place in person. SUMMARY:Gender Equality and Climate Crisis
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nThis meeting will welcome activists\, NGO representatives\, and other interested participants to explore the climate crisis and its relation to gender equality. We experience the consequences of the climate crisis in all areas of our daily lives because of extreme climate events and disasters in every part of the world. We are aware of the urgency to produce policies sufficiently addressing climate change. For this reason\, we know that discussions on climate justice\, mitigation and adaptation debates would be incomplete without addressing gender equality. Our open discussion will focus on three fundamental questions: \n\nWhat could be the steps to ensure gender-based climate justice\, particularly in Turkey?\nHow could we better communicate the common struggles of the climate and gender equality movements?\nWhat is the role of NGOs and civil society in climate feminism?\n\nContext\nThis is the third of five meetings as part of the Feminist Policies in Green Politics project\, where we will delve into different policy areas to strengthen European feminist politics in energy\, economics\, climate policies\, ecology and food & agriculture. Our goal is to identify the difficulties in these areas and compile empowering policy recommendations. Besides these webinars\, the project also features a series of Green Feminist Talks (podcasts) where we will hear more from inspiring activists and politicians across Europe. \nProgramme\n14:00-15:30 (CEST)  \n15:00-16:30 (Istanbul Time)  \n15:00-15:15  Opening + short meeting in breakout rooms  \n15:15 – 15:30  Keynote speech: Ece Baykal (academic at Marmara University and climate activist)  \n15:30-16.30  Network meeting and open discussion  \nModeration: İdil Zeynep Dağdemir \nCall for Action\nThis online event will take place in Turkish. You can register via this link.   \n  \n\nThis webinar is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support Green Thought Association and with the financial support of the European Parliament. SUMMARY:Just Transition in Spain and Next Generation funds- Session 1
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nTransición Verde is working in Spain within the framework of the Prosoxi Alliance\, an Observatory for a socially fair ecological transition\, that aims to participate\, as civil society stakeholders\, in the design\, evaluation and monitoring of the projects that are designed and implemented in Spain under the Next Generation EU Plan. \n  \nThe objectives of the workshop are: \n• To analyse national and international Just Transition experiences. \n• Building evaluation and monitoring indicators for Just Transition in order to review and analyse the projects presented to NG. \n• To improve the communication to society of everything related to Just Transition in order to encourage greater involvement of civil society in these policies. \n  \nWith these sessions we intend to take advantage of the experience of the initiatives implemented by the Spanish Government through the Institute for Just Transition (mainly focused on the abandonment of the coal industry in Spain\, guaranteeing a fair exit for the regions historically linked to this industry) to project it onto the transitions that will or must be entailed in some cases by the projects implemented within the framework of the Next Generation plans. \n  \nSpain has acquired international prominence in the application of Just Transition policies due to the aforementioned plans\, which is why the GEF has decided to collaborate in promoting these sessions with the aim of analysing their approach and execution and also trying to draw lessons so that social actors in other countries\, which will also benefit from the Next Generation EU Funds\, can intervene to ensure that Just Transition is not displaced in those countries. \n  \nTo do this\, we have planned two working sessions which are detailed below. The organisations invited to participate will be the promoters and partners of the Prosoxi alliance\, as well as GEF member foundations or partners that are currently working on Just Transition. Sessions will be held in Spanish and English (with simultaneous translation). \n  \nOrganizations part of the GEF Just Transition Project: \n  \nGreen European Foundation \nOikos (Belgium) \nInstitut for Political Ecology (Croatia) \nSunrise (Macedonia) \nNetworked (Serbia) \nVisio (Finland) \nGreen House Think Tank (United Kingdom) \nFYEG (Federation of Young European Greens) \n  \nSpanish organizations: \n  \nTransición Verde \nFundación Renovables \nRetorna \nCentro Ibérico de Restauración Fluvial \nFundación Nueva Cultura del Agua \nSociedad Española de Agricultura Ecológica \nForo Transiciones \nFundación Savia \nPromoció del Transport Públic \nInstituto Int. de Derecho y Medio Ambiente \nAmigos de la Tierra \nEcologistas en Acción \nEconomistas frente a la crisis \nAsociación Española de Operadores Públicos \n  \nProgramme: \nTuesday 25th of May. From 10:30 to 12:00 \nJUST TRANSITION IN SPAIN. LESSONS TO LEARN \nGuest organisations: ILO and Instituto para la Transición Justa (Ministry for Ecological Transition) \n  \nSpeakers: \n• Dirk Holemans\, co-chair of GEF\, Oikos thinktank – Lead partner at GEFs Just Transition project. He will briefly comment on the importance of Just Transition and the importance of it being taken into account in Next Generation projects. \n  \n• Joaquín Nieto\, Director of the ILO in Spain\, will frame the session with the situation of Just Transition initiatives at the international level. \n  \n• A representative of the Just Transition Institute\, who will comment on the planning and development process and the current situation of the Just Transition plans addressed by this Institute. \n  \nThe speeches by the guest speakers will be short (from 10 to 15 minutes) followed by a debate among the experts and the participants. \n  \nPracticalities:\nWhen: 25th May 2021 \nThis is a closed workshop. \nLanguage: Spanish (simultaneous translation to English) \n  \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Transición Verde and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. SUMMARY:‘Gaming Europe’ National Workshop 2 (Brussels)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nWith the “Gaming Europe” project looking at video games\, the Green European Foundation aims to engage its audience directly in workshops on the use of video games by European teenagers aged 12 to 14. Based on the results of these workshops\, we aim to assess with experts from both the education sector and the video games world whether video games can be used as a medium to address the topic of Europe in an engaging\, fun\, and non-patronising fashion for this target group and\, if the answer is yes\, develop a game concept. SUMMARY:It's Not Just a Transition: Youth in Cities (Postponed)
DESCRIPTION:We’re hosting an essential discussion on the role of Universal Basic Income in the just transition towards a carbon-neutral society\, with focus on how this could help young people . \nGEF\, together with FYEG is holding a workshop in Barcelona\, entitled ‘It’s Not Just a Transition: Youth in Cities’. The workshop will take place in two parts: \n\nSocial justice perspective from each track implemented during the event (transport\, urban development\, energy). For each track\, a vision for the future is previously imagined. In this session we link this vision to the vision for a more just city for the youth.\nDiscussion on the role of UBI in the transition towards a carbon-neutral society\, with focus on how this could help young people (1) realize their dreams/their vision for the future and (2) become more politically active. We will look into the B-Mincome experiment done in Barcelona.\n\nThe seminar kicks-off our 6-partner project ‘Change of Mindset – Civil Society dialogue around UBI\, Social Justice and Climate impact‘\, which aims to spark a stronger civil society dialogue to bring about the change of mindset needed to raise acceptance of universal basic income among the public and to deepen the debate on our conceptions of productivity and work. \nCan’t attend the event? Follow us on Facebook and Twitter  to keep up-to-date with the discussions at the workshop.

SUMMARY:Basic Income as a Tool Towards the Ecological Transition (Córdoba)
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nIn a society threatened by different and converging environmental and social crises\, Universal Basic Income has more and more support as an instrument to mitigate the great social inequalities that the economic system\, based on the infinite economic growth\, cannot solve. \nOn the contrary\, neoliberal capitalism is not only opening a widening gap between rich and poor countries\, but it is accentuating it within the countries themselves\, creating large pockets of poverty. Much has been written about UBI in relation to work\, freedom\, inequality\, gender\, but the ecological dimension has hardly been taken into account. For this reason we want to focus on the UBI-socio-environmental sustainability relationship. \nWould the implementation of a basic income have positive effects on the protection of the Planet? What would be its relationship with economic growth / degrowth? How would it affect consumption patterns? How should it be financed so that it can be an effective instrument for ecological transition? In this session we will try to answer these and many other questions and contribute to the debate on this forgotten but necessary and urgent aspect of Basic Income. \nThis event is part of the Basic Income – European Public Debate project and will take place at the Univerde: Capitalism in Front of the Mirror – the Socio-Environmental Response to a Predatory System\, \nSpeakers\n– Lucía Baratech – economist specialized in Ecological and Social Economics from the Vienna University of Economics. Member of the Basic Income Network. Consultant for Public Administration \n– Jorge Pinto – research associate at the Centre for Ethics\, Politics and Society University of Minho\, Portugal and co-founder of the Portuguese party LIVRE \n– Julen Bollain – economist and researcher\, member of the Basic Income Network and of the BIEN (Basic Income Earth Network).
