SUMMARY:From Sustainability to Sufficiency - The Next Step for Cities
DESCRIPTION:Join us in Stockholm for a one-day workshop on urban sufficiency – the next step for cities beyond sustainability.\nMany European cities have made real progress on sustainability – cleaner air\, greener streets\, better mobility. But staying within planetary boundaries while ensuring a good life for all requires a deeper shift. Cities still consume too many resources\, and overconsumption by some creates scarcity for others. \nTaking place in Stockholm\, this one-day workshop will explore urban sufficiency*: a practical\, forward-looking approach to healthier\, more resilient and socially just cities. We’ll look at how cities can make bold choices on energy\, land\, water and resource use\, strengthen sharing and repair\, support citizen initiatives\, and address challenges like excessive tourism. \n* The IPCC defines in its Climate Report AR6 sufficiency as: “a set of policies\, measures\, and everyday practices that avoid or reduce demand for energy\, materials\, water\, and land\, while delivering human well-being for all within planetary boundaries”. \nWhy join? \nGain a new language and mindset beyond sustainability\, learn how sufficiency works in practice for housing\, consumption\, circular economy and public space\, and get inspired by concrete examples from across Europe. Connect with peers\, exchange ideas\, and leave with insights you can apply in your work\, city or community. \nProvisional programme  \n\n\n\n09.30 – 09.45\nWelcome remarks \n\nVedran Horvat\, Director\, Institute for Political Ecology & Board member\, Green European Foundation\n Isadora Wronski\, Sentior Strategist\, Greenpeace & Chairperson\, Cogito\n\n\n\n\n09.45 – 10.15\nIntroductions\n\n\n10.15 – 10.35\nCrash course on sufficiency \n\nDirk Holemans\, Coordinator\, Oikos ThinkTank\n\n\n\n\n10.35 – 10.50\nBreak\n\n\n10.50 – 11.20\nSufficiency in Sweden: why it matters & what’s on the table \n\nAnn-Charlotte Mellquist\, Head of Unit & Senior Researcher\, RISE Institute\n\n\n\n\n11.20 – 12.30\nWORKSHOP 1: Horizontal system change – addressing the advertising industry that drives consumption \n\nGustav Martner\, Head of Creative Greenpeace Nordic\n\n\n\n\n12.30 – 13.30\nLunch\n\n\n13.30 – 14.00\nSufficiency in practice in European Cities \n\nVedran Horvat\, Board member\, Green European Foundation\n\n\n\n\n14.00 – 15.30\nWORKSHOP 2: Exploring concrete sufficiency dimensions \n\nDirk Holemans\, Coordinator\, Oikos ThinkTank\n\n\n\n\n15.30 – 16.00\nWrap up\, next steps & thank you \n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\nVedran Horvat\, Director of the Croatian Institute for Political Ecology & Board member\, Green European Foundation. SUMMARY:European Green Academy 2026
DESCRIPTION:The 2026 edition of the European Green Academy (EGA) in Brussels\, opens its doors this coming April\, creating an inspiring learning space that brings together Green thinkers\, political actors\, civil society organisations\, and engaged activists from across and beyond Europe. This year’s Academy is crucial – unfolding at a moment when democracy across Europe is under an intensifying attack\, and urgent questions of resilience\, autonomy and collective action demand fresh thinking and alliances. \nAbout the event\nEurope enters 2026 facing a stark political reality. Democratic backsliding\, shrinking civic space\, geopolitical instability\, and the rise of hybrid and technological threats are reshaping the political landscape towards fear\, rollback\, and polarisation. Civil society is being systematically constrained: its autonomy reduced\, its legitimacy attacked\, and its role in democratic life eroded. At the same time\, rapidly evolving technologies are transforming how citizens access information and participate in public life\, creating new vulnerabilities that authoritarian actors are quick to exploit.  \nAgainst this backdrop\, Greens and progressives face mounting challenges in organising\, building alliances\, and collectively envisioning alternatives. EGA 2026 meets this moment head-on: creating a space to deepen understanding\, strengthen transnational exchange and connections\, and develop fresh ideas to defend democracy and rebuild resilience – through stronger participation\, a reimagined and holistic approach to security and protection\, and ambitious ecosocial transformation.  \nOver 1.5 days\, and through a dynamic mix of plenaries\, workshops\, debates\, targeted training sessions and creative formats\, EGA offers an inspiring learning environment where participants can engage with diverse actors and forward-looking ideas. With a strong focus on political education and tailored methodologies\, EGA aims to equip participants with fresh insights\, practical skills\, and forward-looking perspectives to navigate today’s key challenges. It is a space for learning\, building resilience\, and mapping pathways for collective alliances in turbulent political times – as we work towards a just\, ecological\, and democratic Europe.  \nRead more about last years’ edition here.   \n\n  \nProgramme \nFind the European Green Academy programme in PDF here.\nAt the heart of the EGA 2026 programme lies a central question: how can we build resilient\, autonomous\, and vibrant societies amid technological capture\, geopolitical instability\, and deep ecological crisis? \nThematic pillars: \n\nDemocracy under pressure  \nDigital sovereignty and democracy   \nAutonomy & resilience \n\nAcross the Academy\, participants will engage in:  \n\nPlenaries with leading voices from politics\, academia\, activism\, and civil society \nWorkshops and training sessions offering practical tools\, skills\, and methodologies \nDebates and roundtables exploring forward-looking Green ideas \nNetworking spaces to foster collaboration and transnational exchange \nCreative and artistic interventions \n\nMeet the Speakers\n\nNika Kovač\, Activist\, My Voice My Choice\nAgnese Lāce\, Latvia Minister of Culture; co-chair of PROGRESĪVIE\nRosa Martínez\, Secretary of State for Social Rights\, Spain \nTarik Abou-Chadi\, Professor of European Politics\, Oxford University\nNicolae Ștefănuță\, Vice President of the European Parliament\, MEP\, Greens/EFA\nDominika Lasota\, co-founder of the Wschód (“Sunrise”) Initiative\, member of Fridays for Future Poland\nRenata Ávila Pinto\, CEO\, Open Knowledge Foundation\nShannon Vallor\, Co-Director\, Centre for Technomoral Futures\, author The AI Mirror: How to Reclaim Our Humanity in an Age of Machine Thinking \nJustyna Wydrzyńska\, Abortion Dream Team\nStefanos Loukopoulos\, Co-Founder & Director\, Vouliwatch\nZoya Miari\, Palestinian-Ukrainian Storyteller\, Peace Ambassador\nTomas Tomilinas\, MP Democrats for Lithuania\nGabriela Svárovská\, MP\, Co-Chair\, Zelení\nAtte Harjanne\, MP\, Vihreä liitto (Finnish Greens)\nAarti Narsee\, Senior Policy Officer & Lead for Rule of Law Advocacy\, European Civic Forum\nJean Cattan\, Head of the National Initiative\, Café IA; former Secretary General of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Technology Council\nNatalija Simović\, Local Councilor\, Zeleno Levi Front  \nRichard Wouters\, Researcher\, Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks\nAdam Reichardt\, Editor-in-Chief\, New Eastern Europe\nKaren Boers\, FARI\, the Brussels AI Institute for the Common Good\nAriane Giraneza Birekeraho\, Antwerp City Councillor\, Groen \nAlice Stollmeyer\, Executive Director\, Defend Democracy \nKristina Wilfore\, Co-Founder\, #ShePersisted & Director of Innovation and Global Projects at Reset Tech \nBenedetta de Marte\, Secretary General\, European Green Party\nAndrej Zlatović\, Co-Spokesperson\, Federation of Young European Greens  \nÁgi Fernengel\, Director\, School of Public Life\nLiza Bezvershenko\, Independent Civil Society & Advocacy Specialist\nCynthia Muthoni\, Local Councillor\, Green Party of England and Wales\n\nThe European Green Academy will be hosted by Eliza Popper\, Co-Founder of the Good Enough Company. \nFriday 24 April \n\n\n\nTime \nSession \n\n\n13:00-14:00  \nNetworking Lunch  \nRoom: Salle de Guichets\n\n\n14:00-14:20 \nOpening & Welcome  \nRoom: Salle de Guichets\n\n\n14:20-14:45 \nOPENING KEYNOTES \nRoom: Salle de Guichets \n\nAgnese Lāce\, Latvia Minister of Culture; co-chair of PROGRESĪVIE \nNika Kovač\, My Voice My Choice \nRenata Ávila Pinto\, CEO\, Open Knowledge Foundation \nZoya Miari\, Palestinian-Ukrainian Storyteller\, Peace Ambassador \n\n\n\n\n15:00-16:30 \nPARALLEL SESSIONS \n\nBuilding Resilience Through Values\,  Room: Zinneke\nRe-wiring for Democracy: Can We Build Tech Sovereignty from the Ground Up?\, Room: Brel\nThe Backlash Is Organised – Feminists Must Be Too\, Room: Magritte\n\n\n\n\n16:30-17:00  \nBreak \n\n\n 17:00-17:45\nStruggles and Horizons for Democracy in Europe   \n Room: Salle de Guichets \n\nTarik Abou-Chadi\, Professor of European Politics\, Oxford University \nRosa Martínez\, Secretary of State for Social Rights\, Spain \n\n\n\n\n17:45-19:15  \nPLENARY: Civil Society Under Attack: Europe’s Backbone Fights Back \nRoom: Salle de Guichets \n\nRosa Martínez\, Secretary of State for Social Rights\, Spain   \nNika Kovač\, My Voice My Choice   \nStefanos Loukopoulos\, Co-Founder & Director\, Vouliwatch \nAarti Narsee\, Senior Policy Officer & Lead for Rule of Law Advocacy\, European Civic Forum \n\n\n\n\n19:15-20:15  \nNetworking Dinner  \nRoom: Salle de Guichets\n\n\n20:15-20:50 \nSpotlight On: My Voice My Choice \nRoom: Salle de Guichets \n\nNika Kovač\, My Voice My Choice   \n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday 25 April \n\n\n\nTime\nSession \n\n\n09:30- 10:00  \nConnect the Dots – Coffee and Networking \n\n\n10:00-11:30 \nPLENARY: System Reset: Technology for a Democratic Europe   \nRoom: Salle de Guichets \n\nRenata Ávila Pinto\, CEO\, Open Knowledge Foundation \nFrank Karlitschek\, CEO NextCloud   \nProf. Shannon Vallor\, Co-Director\, Centre for Technomoral Futures\, author The AI Mirror\nCyrielle Chatelain\, MP\, Europe Écologie Les Verts\n\n\n\n\n11:45-13:15 \nPARALLEL SESSIONS \n\nUnder pressure but not powerless. SUMMARY:GEF Report Debate & Lunch: Building Security Through Values
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a timely conversation on rethinking European security through values\nOn 23 April\, GEF will host a discussion and lunch around its recent report\, New Idealism for a Disrupted Europe: Building Security Through Values\, bringing together policymakers\, researchers and practitioners to discuss how values-based politics can contribute to strengthening European resilience in a rapidly shifting geopolitical landscape. \nDrawing on lessons from Central and Eastern Europe\, including Ukraine\, the report encourages Europeans\, but also Greens and progressives to rethink traditional approaches to security—challenging established assumptions and opening space for fresh perspectives. The “new idealism” it advocates aims to harness the power of values across a wide range of areas\, from military and social resilience to diplomacy and democracy promotion. \nThe conversation will feature a panel of experts from across Europe: \nTomas Tomilinas\, Member of Parliament\, Democrats for Lithuania (Demokratų sąjunga „Vardan Lietuvos“) and Committee Member\, European Green Party \nOver the years\, Tomas Tomilinas has worked to advance social reforms\, reduce poverty\, and improve climate policy. Lithuania has made major investments in green energy and stopped a nuclear project in 2012. Tomilinas was one of the leaders of the referendum campaign against that nuclear power plant\, and later served twice in the ruling coalition. He was elected as member of the Committee of the European Green Party in 2025. Back in 2021\, he was expelled from his former party for voting in favour of LGBTQ+ rights in Parliament and that resulting in the creation of the Democtrats party\,a proud member of the European Green Party. As Vice-Chair of the Party and vice-chair of the Parliamentary Committee on European Affairs\, he works hard to change the country’s position on EU decision-making reform\, including ending the single-country veto. He’s author of numerous social projects and initiatives\, articles and three books; he’s a consultant for trade unions\, specialist of adult education and co-founder of the NGO Social Investment Management Centre and political think tank Institute for Democracy (2023) and other organisations. He ha also worked as coordinator of party working groups for preparation of electoral programmes (2012\, 2016\, 2020\, 2024) and was co-initiator of the establishment of trade unions in retail chains (2007). \nGabriela Svárovská\, Member of Parliament; Co-chair\, Czech Greens (Zelení) \nGabriela Svárovská has been a member of the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Parliament since October 2025. In the parliament she serves as a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Committee on Environment. She is a Co-Chair of the Czech Green Party. Ms Svárovská has extensive experience in diplomacy\, human rights\, and civil society. She previously served as the Director of the Human Rights Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic and held key political roles as Press Secretary to President Václav Havel and Advisor to Senator Marek Hilšer. In the non-profit sector\, she co-founded the Prague Civil Society Centre\, an endowment fund dedicated to supporting civic activism and independent media across the countries of the former Soviet Union. Her career has been defined by a commitment to democratic values\, international security\, and the protection of universal human rights. \nJoanna Kaminska\, Mediation and Dialogue expert\, European Parliament\, European Green Party Committee \nJoanna Kaminska has facilitated confidential\, high stake dialogue between political party leaders\, mostly in Central and Eastern Europe and advised on security and democracy building Europe’s top decision-makers for over 15 years. She has served as foreign and security policy advisor to the President of the European Parliament David Maria Sassoli\, and worked on coalition making and consensus building between European political forces for over a decade in the area of security and defence. Political negotiations\, democracy building and fostering dialogue between difficult political personalities are her passion. Currently she works as an advisor on mediation at the European Parliament’s mediation team\, where she forges the culture of compromise between political parties in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine during the war.\nJoanna holds a PhD from the University of London\, Royal Holloway College. She has extensively published on the foreign and security policy and Eastern neighborhood issues. Her last book published with Palgrave Macmillan is entitled Poland and the EU Enlargement: Foreign Policy in Transformation.\nBetween 2018-2024 she was also a Brussels municipal council member. Since 2021 she is a National Council member of the Polish Green Party Zieloni. In December 2024 she got elected to the European Green Party (EGP) committee\, political body managing green parties in Europe\, where she is responsible for building security and defense narratives. \nRichard Wouters\, Project Lead\, Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks\, Netherlands \nRichard Wouters is a project lead at Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks\, the think tank of the Dutch Green party. He is the editor and co-author of various GEF publications\, including ‘Geopolitics of a Post-Growth Europe’ and ‘New Idealism for a Disrupted Europe’. \nLiza Bezvershenko\, Independent Civil Society & Advocacy Specialist \nLiza Bezvershenko is a Ukrainian civil society expert based in Brussels\, specialising in EU-Ukraine relations\, European integration\, and democracy promotion. She acts as Advocacy Coordinator at the NGO European Resolve\, where she contributes to European security and democratic resilience by advancing research\, fostering dialogue between civil society\, decision-makers\, and research institutions\, and supporting public engagement through awareness-raising initiatives. \nShe is a recipient of the 2024 Young Diplomat Award and has been repeatedly featured in international media as a recognised voice for Ukraine in Brussels. \nModerated by Roderick Kefferpütz\, Director\, Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung EU Office \nRoderick Kefferpütz has been the Director of the European Union | Global Dialogue office of the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung since May 2023. SUMMARY:Centenary of Manuel Sacristán: Ecosocialism or barbarism!
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Green Red Dialogue to honour the legacy of one of the most influential critical thinkers of the 20th century while asking what kind of future Europe chooses to build.\nAbout the Event\nIn 2025\, we commemorated the centenary of the birth of Manuel Sacristán\, a key figure in critical thought and an indisputable reference for ecosocialism in Catalonia and across Spain. This event is conceived as a meaningful tribute for all those committed to social transformation\, ecological justice\, and the defence of democratic values. \nAt a moment of profound global crisis – marked by ecological collapse\, social inequality\, and the erosion of fundamental rights -Sacristán’s legacy is more relevant and necessary than ever. His work continues to inspire critical reflection and collective action at the intersection of Marxism\, ecology\, and ethics. What might these ideas offer to Europe today? How can they help guide social movements and political actors in confronting ecological limits\, democratic regression\, and growing inequality? And what would it mean to place ethical responsibility and social emancipation at the heart of Europe’s political future? \nIt is in response to these questions that we bring together leading voices from the Green movement\, feminism\, youth activism\, and critical political thought – to debate\, inspire\, and collectively explore pathways toward social justice\, ecological responsibility\, and democratic renewal in Europe. \nSpeakers \n\nBenedetta Di Marte\, Secretary General\, European Green Party\nQuim Sempere\, Doctor of Philosophy and disciple of Manuel Sacristán\nCinta González Sentís\, Secretary General\, Federation of Young European Greens\nModerator: Andreu Mayayo\, Professor of History\n\nBefore the dialogue begins\, participants are warmly invited to share an informal networking moment together over a cup of hot chocolate. \nProject Background\nThe Green Red Dialogues\, organised by the Green European Foundation (GEF) with the support of Fundació Nous Horitzons\, provide a space to address the defining social and ecological challenges of our time from a Southern European perspective. From the rise of the far right to feminist struggles\, from war and authoritarianism to the historical roots of ecosocialist thought\, these dialogues bring together diverse voices to connect the red and the green – bridging social and environmental justice in Europe. \nThis dialogue continues that mission by revisiting the intellectual foundations of ecosocialism through the work of Manuel Sacristán\, while encouraging open\, critical debate capable of confronting silence\, resignation\, and inaction in the face of today’s crises. \nSpeakers\n\nBenedetta De Marte\, Secretary General\, European Green Party\nQuim Sempere\, Doctor of Philosophy and disciple of Manuel Sacristan\nCinta González Sentís\, Secretary General\, Federation of Young European Greens\nAndreu Mayayo\, Professor of History\n\nPracticalities\nDate: 24 January 2025\nTime: 11:30-13:30 CET\nFormat: In-person\nAddress: CCOO Headquarters\, Via Laietana\, 16\, Ciutat Vella\, 08003 Barcelona\, Spain \nRegistration: Please register your attendace via this link.   \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation (GEF) with the support of Fundació Nous Horitzons and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Green-Red Dialogues - From Silence to Action: Europe’s Duty in the Face of Genocide
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Green Red Dialogue confronting Europe’s silence in the face of the ongoing genocide in Palestine\, and exploring what accountability\, justice\, and solidarity should mean today.\nAbout the event\nEurope’s position on the ongoing Palestinian genocide has become one of the most urgent and divisive political issues of our time. It exposes profound contradictions within European diplomacy\, from the continued provision of aid to Israel by certain EU member states\, to the muted response of institutions faced with mounting civilian deaths and international law violations repeated countlessly. \nThis dialogue will explore the political\, civic\, and moral implications of Europe’s stance\, both within and beyond the EU\, and reflect on its responsibilities and prospects for peace. The discussion will also address the role of boycott movements and public mobilisation\, examining how citizens’ voices opposing the genocide have been heard (or silenced) across Europe\, with a specific zoom into Spain and how this EU country decided to take a firm stance as compared to other member states. \nTargeted at those interested in foreign policy\, human rights\, and European democracy\, this event aims to foster a critical and forward-looking conversation on the EU’s role in global justice and peacebuilding. \nThe webinar format will allow participants from across Europe to join and engage in this one-hour dialogue\, which seeks to identify pathways toward a more coherent\, just\, and principled European foreign policy. \nProject background\nGEF’s Green Red Dialogues\, organised with the support of Fundació Nous Horitzons\, provide a platform to address the defining social and ecological challenges of our time through a Southern European perspective. From the genocide in Palestine to the war in Ukraine\, the far-right resurgence to feminist struggles\, the Dialogues bring together diverse voices to connect the red and the green\, bridging social and environmental justice concerns in Europe. \nThis dialogue continues that mission by focusing on Europe’s role and responsibility in the context of the Palestinian genocide\, and by encouraging open dialogue that challenges silence and inaction. \nSpeakers\n\nGabriel Garroum – Doctor in War Studies\nAina Vidal – Member of the Spanish Parliament\, Sumar\nGwendoline Delbos-Corfield – Co-president\, Green European Foundation\n\nModeration: Marc Rius (Fundacio Nous Horitzons)\nPracticalities\nDate: 24 November 2025Time: 18h00 – 19h00Format: Online (webinar)\nLanguage: The webinar will be held in Catalan and English\, with simultaneous translation provided.\nRegistration: link here \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation (GEF) with the support of Fundació Nous Horitzons and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Green Talks with GEF at the Green Days 2025 (Białowieża National Park)
DESCRIPTION:What does security mean in a time of war\, climate crisis\, and democratic backsliding? Join us at Green Talks with GEF during Green Days 2025 in Białowieża for a day of powerful discussions on defense\, democracy\, and environmental justice! \nAbout the event\nGreen Talks with GEF is a special contribution by the Green European Foundation (GEF) to Green Days 2025\, a Green summer school taking place this year in the iconic Białowieża National Park. Returning to the site of the very first Green Days held in 2015\, this edition marks the event’s 10-year anniversary\, bringing renewed focus on security\, democracy\, and environmental protection in a region facing ongoing geopolitical and social turbulence. \nStarting on 4 July 2025\, the event will consist of several panel discussions and workshops\, offering a space for reflection\, exchange\, and alliance-building. The Green Talks organized by GEF will gather Green politicians\, civil society actors\, and grassroots activists from across Central and Eastern Europe to explore what Green security means in today’s Europe. \nAt the core of the event is a belief that security must go beyond borders and weapons – it must also mean access to justice\, safety for the most vulnerable\, climate resilience\, and democratic freedoms. \nProject background\nThis year’s Green Talks reflect GEF’s long-term commitment to strategic engagement in Central and Eastern Europe\, and Poland in particular. With new political leadership since 2023 and Poland’s Greens in government\, the country is at a critical crossroads for its future direction. Yet even under a pro-European coalition\, hard questions persist: What kind of security do we want? Who defines it? And at what cost? \nThe symbolic location of Białowieża – a biodiversity hotspot straddling the Polish-Belarusian border and a crossing point for vulnerable migrants – underscores the complexity of these debates. GEF’s contribution will explore the intersections between defence\, environment\, civil liberties\, and the future of Europe through a Green lens\, asking how we can build safer\, fairer societies without reproducing oppressive models of “order.” \nProgramme:\nYou may find the GEF sponsored session down below\, but in case you’re interested in the full programme\, please click here. \nFriday 4.07: \nParallel sessions: \n10:00 – 11:30\nGreen vision of a safe city [PL/EN]\n \nConfirmed speakers: \n\nDirk Holemmans\, Ghent (Oikos\, video)\,\nVedran Horvat\, Zagreb (IPE/GEF\, video) \nMirosław Kaznowski (vice-burgmestr of Milanówek)\nKatarzyna Pilitowska (urban activist Kraków)\nDenis Gerard (Kooperatywa “Dobrze”)\nWaldemar Kamiński\, Warszawa-Białołęka (local councillor)\n\n\nWorkshop: the Climate Fresk [PL\, EN individual interpretation]\nConfirmed speaker:\nNathalie Bolgert \n\n\nPlenary debate:\n\n16:00 – 17:00\n\nGreen perspective on defence [PL/EN]\n \nConfirmed speakers: \n\nJoanna Kamińska (Committee Member\, European Green Party; Zieloni) \nElina Pinto (Committee Member\, European Green Party; Progresivie)\n\nModeration: Laurent Standaert (GEF) \nSaturday 5.07: \nParallel sessions: \n10:00 – 11:30\nSecurity and new technologies: facing AI and disinformation [PL/EN] \nConfirmed speakers:\n \n\nAnna Mierzyńska (OKO.press) lub/or Maia Mazurkiewicz (StratCom Alliance4Europe) (tbc.)\nTomasz Piątek (Reset Obywatelski)\nKlementyna Suchanow (UW)\nAlice Stollmeyer (Defend Democracy)\n\n\nPracticalities:\nDate and Time: 4 July 2025\nLocation: Białowieża National Park\, Poland\nLanguage:  English / Polish (simultaneous interpretation provided)\nRegistration: you may find the registration form to this link. SUMMARY:GEF Green Horizons Academy - Good for Nature (Belgrade)
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nThe GEF Green Horizons Academy (GHA) is an annual space for discussion and idea development around the future of environmental and social policies in Europe. This year’s edition\, Good for Nature\, will focus on advocating for strong biodiversity protection policies and empowering civic engagement in environmental efforts.  \nIn 2025\, nature protection activists and green minded individuals in general face mounting challenges. The EU’s Biodiversity Strategy 2030 is under pressure\, environmental laws are threatened by corporate lobbying\, and civic movements face increasing repression amid a growing trend of authoritarianism. Meanwhile\, in Serbia and across the Balkans\, local movements struggle to protect ecosystems from extractivist industries\, such as lithium mining and hydropower projects. In this context\, GHA: Good for Nature will bring together civil society representatives\, grassroots activists\, EU policy experts\, and decision-makers to strategize and build knowledge on defending nature and strengthening environmental democracy.  \nThe two-day conference will feature a public panel debate\, a field trip to explore local environmental challenges\, workshops\, and networking opportunities.  \nProject Background\nGEF GHA: Good for Nature is part of the Green European Foundation’s broader mission to promote a sustainable and socially just future. This year’s edition follows the 2024 discussions on extractivism and the European Green Deal’s external impacts\, shifting the focus toward biodiversity and nature restoration as central pillars of Europe’s green transition\, as well as avoiding the clashes that can happen between the fight for biodiversity and the development of sustainable energies.  \nProgramme\n\nDAY 1: PUBLIC EVENT – no pre-registration needed\n16:00 Arrival of the participants and public\n17:00 Panel 1:  Biodiversity and consistency in EU policies \n\nIgor Kalaba – Center for Environment\, (Bosnia and Herzegovina)\nBelma Šestović – Wildlife Montenegro\nNataša Đereg – National Convention on European Union in Serbia (NCEU)\nVanja Jakšić – WWF Adria (Belgrade)\n\nModerator: Žaklina Živković\, Polekol \n18:30 Panel 2: Ecosystems\, local communities and decarbonisation \n\nIvan Milosavljević – Rangers of East Serbia\nAleksandar Dragićević – Eco activist\, Montenegro\nMilja Vuković – Blue and Green initiative\nAndrey Ralev – Bankwatch SEE\nMarko Mirč – Institute for Biological Research “Siniša Stanković”\n\nModerator: Iva Marković\, Polekol \n20:00 Dinner for the participants and speakers – at the venue \nDAY 2: CLOSED DOOR – only selected applicant\n09:00 Workshop 1: Sandra Jovanović – Biodiversity Expert – EU policies for the people!\n10:30 Workshop 2: Discussions around case studies with the participants and lessons learned from the day before’s panel discussions\n12:00 Field trip to Bara Reva\, Lunch\n14:00 Ana Džakić\, NGO Bela Čaplja (White Heron) – Presentation about the local struggle\, Networking opportunities\n18:00 Trip back to Belgrade\n19:00 Dinner & Goodbyes \n\n\n\nPracticalities\nDate: 28-29 March 2025\nLocation: Belgrade\, Serbia / online live retransmission on our partner’s instagram channel\nVenue: KC Grad\, Braće Krsmanović 4\, Belgrade\, Serbia\nLanguage: English\nCosts coverage: We will provide catering during the event and cover any travel costs within Serbia. SUMMARY:Making our economies fit for the people and the planet (Brussels)
DESCRIPTION:About the event:\nGeopolitical tensions and inequality between and within countries highlight the urgent need for a socially just transition that leaves no one behind. While the EU has taken significant steps through the EU Green Deal\, contradictions persist. Wellbeing is mentioned in EU documents\, but a comprehensive plan for making human and planetary wellbeing a priority in decision-making is still missing. \nAs we strive for an economy that aligns with human needs and planetary boundaries\, new economic approaches are emerging across academia\, civil society\, and institutions. The publication we are launching aims to address this challenge by developing ideas and political proposals to turn the EU’s ambition to “work towards an integrated framework for wellbeing” into action. \nOur political brief is the result of a one-year-long exchange within a  Knowledge Community of more than 60 experts\, mapping key challenges and offering recommendations to guide European institutions in making wellbeing a reality. Join us for the launch event to explore the findings and exchange ideas on pathways forward. View the agenda here. \n\nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 4 March 10:00-12:30 – the debate will be followed by a networking lunch\nLocation: Topos Parlement\, Brussels\, and online\nLanguage: English\nRegistration: please register now to join the event \n\nThis publication launch is organised by the Green European Foundation in collaboration with the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP) and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Enough: Thriving Societies Beyond Growth (Helsinki)
DESCRIPTION:About the event:\nWho is afraid of degrowth? The term alone throws mainstream opinion makers and many economists in Europe into a panic. Growth is the lubricant of capitalism. We are told that if the economy is growing\, all is well. But what do we mean by growth? Should everything keep growing endlessly? The ecological crisis shows that infinite growth on a finite planet is impossible. Meanwhile\, the current economic system fails to secure livelihoods and exacerbates inequalities. There is an alternative to this self-destructive system: an economy of enough\, which would provide for everyone’s basic needs while addressing greed and overconsumption. The EU has the potential to lead the ecological transition – but we need to envision a different European economy\, rooted in a new paradigm\, before we can build it. \nIn Enough\, the authors build on the work of visionaries\, both past and present\, recognising that Earth is on loan to us from future generations. They explore how societies can thrive without depending on economic growth. The essay presents a compelling vision: fewer private jets\, less inequality\, fewer burnouts\, and reduced waste\, alongside more quality of life\, more time for each other\, more sustainable products\, and a healthier planet. In other words\, it provides the keys to imagining a different Europe – one that ensures a good life for everyone within the planet’s limits. \nAt this book launch event\, we will dive deeper into what this means in practice. How are principles of sufficiency and an “economy of enough” already reflected in local initiatives and policy proposals today? What are the levers of change\, within and outside of political institutions? And how do we make sure that this vision of thriving beyond growth resonates and really does not leave anyone behind\, especially at a time when socio-economic fears are framed directly in opposition to climate policy and a green transition? \n\nProject background:\nIn early 2024\, GEF released Enough: Thriving Societies Beyond Growth. This publication sought to spotlight many of the ideas that the foundation has been exploring on post-growth and a just green and social deal\, presenting them in an accessible and inspiring booklet. Now\, we are taking it on a tour to spark conversations across the continent on how Europe can reconcile social and ecological justice in a wellbeing project for all with sufficiency. \n\nProgramme and speakers\nAuthor Dirk Holemans will be joined in the panel by: \n\nTuuli Hirvilammi  – Senior Research Fellow in social policy\, Faculty of Social Sciences\, Tampere University\nPaavo Järvensivu – Associate Professor of Environmental and Social Policy (Docent)\, University of Helsinki\n\nModerated by Leena Brandt – Journalist \n\nPracticalities\nDate and Time: Monday 20 January 17:15-19:00 EET (18:15-20:00 Brussels time\n– 17h15: arrival and refreshment\n– 17h30: book presentaiton by Dirk\n– 18h00: panel discussion around the book’s topics\n– 18h45: Q&A\nLocation: Kaisa-talo\, Kaisaniemenkatu 5\, Helsinki\, and online to this link\nLanguage: English\nRegistration: Please register in advance via this link. SUMMARY:Green-Red Dialogue : Adapting and Preparing to Climate Crisis (online)
DESCRIPTION:About the event:\nEcosocialism is not only a theoretical framework for understanding society but also a practical approach to addressing major challenges and finding shared solutions. Several EU countries have experienced significant catastrophes this year\, such as floods in Valencia\, wildfires in Greece\, and droughts in Barcelona. These environmental and social disasters threaten both peace and security. \nThis dialogue seeks to explore how ecosocialist policies can provide responses that mitigate the effects of environmental disasters and promote a fair\, inclusive\, and solidarity-based transition. We aim to identify territorial\, economic\, and social management models necessary to tackle these challenges\, ensuring dignified lives for all while preserving ecosystems. The event will bring together climate change experts\, activists\, and policymakers to share diverse perspectives\, enriching collective reflection and paving the way toward a sustainable and just future. \nProject background:\nGEF’s Green Red Dialogues\, organised with the support of Fundació Nous Horitzons\, aim to tackle pressing issues of our time and the challenges Europe faces with an explicit social and green lens. From COVID-19 to the war in Ukraine\, far right resurgence to feminist struggles – these issues tend to reverberate across multiple countries and domains. Through the dialogues\, we connect the red and the green and highlight Southern European perspectives on crucial topics and developments across the continent. \nSpeakers:\n\nMireia Mollà – Valencian politician\, former Minister of Agriculture for the Generalitat Valenciana\nSalvador Milà – Catalan jurist and politician\, former Minister of Environment and Housing for the Generalitat de Catalunya\nMarc Jiménez – Advisor for the European Green Party\n\nmoderation: Marc Rius – President of Fundació Nous Horitzons\n \nProgramme:\n18:30: Welcome and introduction\n18:40: Speakers’ Presentations\n19:10: Roundtable Discussion\n19:40: Audience Q&A\n19:55: Conclusions and Closing \nPracticalities:\nDate & Time: December 12\, 18:30 – 20:00 \nLocation: Online \nLanguages: The session will be in Catalan\, Spanish\, and English. SUMMARY:Enough: Thriving Societies Beyond Growth (Edinburgh / online)
Countries in the Global North have the potential and indeed the responsibility to lead this ecological transition – but we need to envision a different economy\, rooted in a new paradigm\, before we can build it. What is the most helpful way of conceptualising a move beyond growth? How do ongoing initiatives\, like the Wellbeing Economy\, work towards meeting these objectives? What more can we do\, both within and outside of political institutions? What role is there for transnational exchange and experimentation\, in Scotland as well as the EU? And what do our current legislative configurations enable and prevent us from doing? \n\nProject background:\nIn early 2024\, GEF released Enough: Thriving Societies Beyond Growth. SUMMARY:The Role of Civil Society for Peace: A Discussion on European Security and Resilience (Stockholm / online)
DESCRIPTION:About the event:\nIn an era marked by complexity and conflict\, civil society stands as a crucial pillar for fostering peace\, stability\, and sustainable development throughout Europe. These actors work tirelessly\, creating hope\, preventing violence\, and strengthening communities. Yet\, they face unprecedented threats—not only from rising militarization and political polarization but also through direct pressures such as budget cuts and restrictive policies. \nThis hybrid event will explore the pivotal role civil society plays in peace building and examine the risks to Europe’s long-term security if these actors are marginalized. We will hear from experts who will discuss challenges faced by civil society\, explore alternative approaches to security\, and strategize how to support civil society’s mission of advancing a sustainable and just peace across Europe. \nProject background:\nThis event is part of GEF’s work on Peace and Security\, where we will focus on strengthening civil society’s role in fostering resilience across Europe. With the growing impact of (far-)right governments\, like those in the Netherlands and Sweden\, civil society faces increased risks from budget cuts and restrictive policies. By bringing together diverse perspectives\, we aim to highlight shared challenges and ways civil society can continue driving sustainable peace in these changing political landscapes. \nSpeakers:\n\nIsabella Lövin – Member of the European Parliament for the Greens/European Free Alliance group\nMałgorzata Kopka-Piątek – Head of the European and Migration Policy Programme in the Institute of Public Affairs\nPetra Tötterman Andorff  – Kvinna till Kvinna’s Secretary-General\nSaba Tadele  – Artist and Writer\n\nmoderation: Gabriel Liljenström – ACT Swedish Church\n \nProgramme:\n13:00: Welcome and introduction\, featuring poetry by Saba Tadele\n13h10: Introduction speech by GEF’s co-president\, Gwendoline Delbos-Corfield\n13:15: Panel disussion\n14:00: Audience Q&A\n14:25: Closing words by Saba Tadele \nPracticalities:\nDate & Time: December 9\, 12:00 – 14:30 \nLocation: Draken at SOLIDARITETSRÖRELSENS HUS Tegelviksgatan 40\, 116 41 Stockholm\, Sweden; hybrid participation available \nLanguages: The event will be held in English \nRegistration: Please register in advance to this link. \n  \nWatch the recording!\nIf you missed GEF’s event\, you can now watch the full recording here. \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Cogito and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Green-Red Dialogues: Disinformation and the Far-Right : Democracy at Risk
DESCRIPTION:About the event:\nDisinformation\, especially surrounding climate change\, is on the rise across Europe. It undermines public trust\, stalls urgent climate actions\, and jeopardizes democratic processes fundamental to the European Union. This event will examine how false narratives\, notably around climate\, are weaponized to divide societies\, foster Euroscepticism\, and create mistrust in institutions. Targeted at individuals interested in democracy\, climate policy\, and social justice\, this dialogue aims to foster a comprehensive discussion between experts from diverse fields. The format will be a panel discussion with hybrid participation to maximize engagement\, with a goal of identifying strategies to combat disinformation and protect both the environment and democratic values central to the EU. \nSpeakers:\n\nPere Rusinol – Journalist\, member and editor at Alternativas Economicas\nSteven Forti – Professor of History at UAB\, author of Extrema Derecha 2.0\n\nLaia Ortiz – Political Scientist\, social area director at Pasqual Maragall Foundation\, Board Member at Fundacio Nous Horitzons\nMaria Giovanna Manieri – Greens/EFA – Team Leader at the Green Group at the European Parliament on Rights and Democracy\n\nProgramme:\n  \nPracticalities:\nDate and Time: 18th of November\, 18h30-20h00 \nLocation: Espai Assemblea de Comisiones Obreras (Via Laietana 16\, Barcelona)\, with hybrid participation \nLanguage:  The session will be in Catalan\, Spanish\, and English. SUMMARY:Crisis Cascades: Green Responses to Europe’s Polycrisis (Vilnius)
DESCRIPTION:About the event:\nThe term polycrisis has become a central feature of the European public debate. From pandemic and supply chain disruptions to war\, cost-of-living\, and climate breakdown\, today’s compounding crises feed insecurity\, instability\, and distrust\, with significant repercussions for EU integration and democracy. This is felt particularly acutely on Europe’s Eastern flank. \nBy discussing and connecting (in)security in all its facets – including social\, ecological\, and geopolitical – this event aims to confront the crisis cascades with equally multiplying solutions. What are the (green) tools and visions that can bolster security and resilience? What does crisis preparedness look like in practice\, at local\, national\, and European level? And what lessons do the Baltic states hold for the rest of Europe in this regard? \nWe are gathering civil society\, academics\, activists and others from Lithuania and beyond to exchange on these questions and ideas in a series of lectures\, panel debates\, and discussion moments. Join us in Vilnius or online to contribute to this effort! \n\nProject background:\nSince 2022\, GEF has used its unique connector position within and beyond the green movement to feed and define conversations on peace and security in Europe\, and to bring diverse and multifaceted angles to the (geopolitical) discussion table.
