DESCRIPTION:About the event:\nWho is afraid of degrowth? The term alone throws mainstream opinion makers and many economists in Europe into a panic. Growth is the lubricant of capitalism. We are told that if the economy is growing\, all is well. But what do we mean by growth? Should everything keep growing endlessly? The ecological crisis shows that infinite growth on a finite planet is impossible. Meanwhile\, the current economic system fails to secure livelihoods and exacerbates inequalities. There is an alternative to this self-destructive system: an economy of enough\, which would provide for everyone’s basic needs while addressing greed and overconsumption. The EU has the potential to lead the ecological transition – but we need to envision a different European economy\, rooted in a new paradigm\, before we can build it. \nIn Enough\, the authors build on the work of visionaries\, both past and present\, recognising that Earth is on loan to us from future generations. They explore how societies can thrive without depending on economic growth. The essay presents a compelling vision: fewer private jets\, less inequality\, fewer burnouts\, and reduced waste\, alongside more quality of life\, more time for each other\, more sustainable products\, and a healthier planet. In other words\, it provides the keys to imagining a different Europe – one that ensures a good life for everyone within the planet’s limits. \nAt this book launch event\, we will dive deeper into what this means in practice. How are principles of sufficiency and an “economy of enough” already reflected in local initiatives and policy proposals today? What are the levers of change\, within and outside of political institutions? And how do we make sure that this vision of thriving beyond growth resonates and really does not leave anyone behind\, especially at a time when socio-economic fears are framed directly in opposition to climate policy and a green transition? \n\nProject background:\nIn early 2024\, GEF released Enough: Thriving Societies Beyond Growth. This publication sought to spotlight many of the ideas that the foundation has been exploring on post-growth and a just green and social deal\, presenting them in an accessible and inspiring booklet. Several EU countries have experienced significant catastrophes this year\, such as floods in Valencia\, wildfires in Greece\, and droughts in Barcelona. These environmental and social disasters threaten both peace and security. \nThis dialogue seeks to explore how ecosocialist policies can provide responses that mitigate the effects of environmental disasters and promote a fair\, inclusive\, and solidarity-based transition. Europe has the potential to lead the ecological transition – but we need to envision a different economy\, rooted in a new paradigm\, before we can build it. \nIn Enough\, the authors build on the work of visionaries\, both past and present\, recognising that Earth is on loan to us from future generations. They explore how societies can thrive without depending on economic growth. The essay presents a compelling vision: fewer private jets\, less inequality\, fewer burnouts\, and reduced waste\, alongside more quality of life\, more time for each other\, more sustainable products\, and a healthier planet. DESCRIPTION:About the event:\nThe Green Academy is a discussion and dialogue platform\, established in 2010 as a space for advanced learning in political ecology. The 9th edition of Green Academy is entitled ”Stay with the Trouble\,” and will feature a varied programme of keynotes\, panels\, workshops\, and social activities. As part of the programme\, GEF is hosting a series of Green Talks spotlighting our latest work on the wellbeing economy\, adaptation\, and building a resilient Europe beyond growth. \n\nProject background:\nIf trends continue\, the summer of 2024 is likely to be the hottest yet\, with the daily reality of the climate crisis coming into even sharper focus for ever more citizens. Yet unlike five years ago\, climate and biodiversity do not dominate the political headlines or European voter priorities\, whether due to disillusionment\, disinformation\, or competing concerns like cost-of-living and (in)security. \nMore than ever\, it is important to demonstrate how social and ecological justice go hand in hand\, and to foster the bottom-up democracy to make that happen. Concepts and ideas like post-growth\, the commons\, and citizen assemblies may hold some of the answers\, but need the right narratives and policy grounding to truly pierce the mainstream European debate. GEF has supported this endeavour for a long time\, including as a partner of the 2023 Beyond Growth Conference in the European Parliament and the International Degrowth Conference that took place in Zagreb that same year. \nAs we get ready to enter a new EU cycle\, with a reshuffled parliament and Commission\, it is crucial to keep the momentum going and ensure that wellbeing and a prosperous Europe beyond growth remain on the agenda. DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThis event marks the launch of the GEF Political Brief: A European Green Caring Society – Overcoming Fragmentation. This publication is a result of a Knowledge Community led by Proto(to)pia founder and GEF core expert Céline Charveriat\, with contributions of a wider group of experts. It examines the interconnections between care for the climate\, biodiversity and the environment on the one hand and care for humans on the other. It argues that the related systems are currently in a twin crisis and advocate for integrated political solutions. \nKey proposals to achieve this goal are put forward in the Brief. They include extending the EU’s Do No Harm principle to encompass both human and environmental care\, fostering a green care sector\, implementing ecological and progressive tax reforms\, establishing a People’s Sovereignty Fund and creating a new Commission Vice-Presidency for Caring Societies. These initiatives aim to bridge policy silos\, promote sustainability\, and ensure social equity\, thus fostering a resilient and inclusive European society. The concept of a Green Caring Society also has significant international implications. The interconnected nature of both the ecological crisis and public health risks necessitates global cooperation. The EU must minimize the negative impacts of its (care) systems on the rest of the world while maximizing positive outcomes through mutually beneficial partnerships. Supporting a global green care strategy and advocating for the rights of future generations and nature are essential components of this effort. \nA Green Caring Society can bring the EU closer to its citizens and enhance overall well-being while respecting the planet’s boundaries. DESCRIPTION:About the event\nDo we really want to continue on the path of exponential growth and increasing consumerism? If we do\, a major global catastrophe is inevitable. Rapid change is needed at all levels: global\, European\, national\, regional\, and local.While the European Green Deal has provided a much-needed roadmap at the EU level\, its implementation\, particularly the social dimension\, has fallen short of many greens’ hopes and expectations. More worryingly\, the progress made over the past five years is now under threat from growing conservative and far-right voices in the European Parliament and certain national governments. Amid these forces of delay and distraction\, it is crucial to equip European citizens with the tools to continue fighting for a European Green Deal for All. \nPoland “returned to the European Union” thanks to the extraordinary electoral mobilisation of Polish society\, especially women and young people. However\, with this new progressive coalition in power\, it is crucial for progressive stakeholders to strengthen their bonds to ensure a lasting impact on society. Additionally\, they must ensure that the new coalition remains true to the principles for which they were elected. \n\n\n\n\nThis one-day GEF summer school in Poland aims to connect the green movement\, NGOs\, activists\, and other relevant stakeholders. The program will cover topics such as just energy transition\, alternative models like doughnut cities and the wellbeing economy\, and the future of the European Green Deal (EGD). \nSessions will explore the connections between the ecological and social dimensions of the doughnut model\, with a backdrop of the European Union’s landscape following the 2024 elections\, especially concerning the fate of the EGD. DESCRIPTION:About the event \nThe term “degrowth” often causes panic among mainstream opinion makers and many economists in Europe. Economic growth is the lubricant of capitalism. We are told that if the economy is growing\, all is well. But what do we mean by growth? Should everything keep growing endlessly? The ecological crisis shows that infinite growth on a finite planet is impossible. Meanwhile\, the current economic system fails to secure livelihoods and deepens inequalities. There is an alternative to this self-destructive system: an economy of enough\, which would provide for everyone’s basic needs while tackling greed and overconsumption. \n The EU has the potential to lead the ecological transition. Although the Green Deal was a significant step forward\, it remains locked within a growth-addicted economy with a core principle of competition in a single market\, and it does not sufficiently address social inequality. We need to imagine a different European economy\, rooted in a new paradigm\, before we can build it. \nThis is why the Green European Foundation is launching “Enough: Thriving Societies Beyond Growth”. Written by Dirk Holemans\, Lara Ferrante\, and Elze Vermaas\, this essay explores how societies can thrive without depending on economic growth. It presents a compelling vision of fewer private jets\, less inequality\, fewer burnouts\, and reduced waste\, alongside more quality of life\, more time for each other\, more sustainable products\, and a healthier planet. In other words\, a good life for everyone within the planet’s limits. SUMMARY:Materials\, (De)Growth and Geopolitics (Utrecht)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nEuropean demand for materials has impacts all over the world. Our consumption\, far greater than the global average\, contributes to the destruction of ecosystems near and far. For some materials and goods\, we depend on autocratic regimes. So there is an ecological and a geopolitical need to reduce our resource consumption. To do so\, should we abandon the pursuit of economic growth\, as advocated by the degrowth movement? Could we still meet everyone’s needs and grow our well-being?  \nMany of the materials that we use\, including for the energy transition\, are extracted in the Global South. There\, mining often comes at the expense of the environment\, nature and local communities. At the same time\, millions of people depend on mining for their livelihoods. Can the EU assist developing countries in earning more with less mining? Can we break with neo-colonial exploitation and build new partnerships with the Global South? After all\, we need partners in a time of mounting geopolitical conflicts and a deepening ecological crisis.  \nThe questions we discuss in this seminar are inspired by GEF’s report Geopolitics of a Post-Growth Europe and a (forthcoming) report by the Dutch Young Climate Movement on what young people need to live sustainably. How did this ideology of growth become so dominant? And more importantly\, how can we shift towards constructing new paradigms? \nTo explore these pressing questions\, GEF is launching the  Spanish translation of the publication\, “On the Narrative of Growth: Unlearning Dogmas.” Delve into thought-provoking insights and participate in a compelling debate on reimagining our economic future. Don’t miss this opportunity to gain a firsthand impression of our publication and contribute to the dialogue shaping our collective tomorrow. Stay tuned for the forthcoming English translation. \nWith this event we wish to contribute to dismantle the discourse of economic growth so that other visions of the world can penetrate the social imaginary. Green Approaches to Defence (upcoming) – with GRIP \nIn a shifting geopolitical landscape\, Greens are grappling with the interplay between their traditional pacifist roots and the post-February 2022 security challenges. This report delves into their evolving stances on key defence issues\, from EU military cooperation to disarmament\, offering insights into the varied approaches adopted by Green parties from eight EU countries. Expert viewpoints featured throughout provide further feedback and inputs as to what a Green defence policy could (or should) look like. SUMMARY:EGAT Study Trip 2024
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nDuring this three-day study trip\, participants will have the chance to explore various topics such as political ecology\, lobbying and just transition in Brussels through engaging with professionals\, politicians\, NGOs and other activists operating in and around the European institutions\, as well as with each other. \nWith a range of formal and non-formal training methods\, including interactive workshops\, the trip will be a valuable learning experience for young activists brought together by Green values and a motivation to enact change. \nProject background\nThe European Green Activists Training (EGAT) consists of training sessions for young Green activists in various phases. SUMMARY:Green European Horizons Academy: Good for All (Belgrade)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nGEF’s Green European Horizons Academy aims to expand the imaginarium of the green movement towards an alternative livable future equally across Europe and beyond. After the first two successful Academies\, (1) The Good Story (focused on green narratives) and (2) The Good Collective (dealt with structures for resilient green organisations)\, with this Green European Horizons Academy: Good for All\, the organisers wish to address raising extractivist and neocolonial practices being enacted inside the territory of the EU\, in member and candidate EU countries\, and outside the borders of the EU\, especially in the light of the green energy transition and the ambitious goals of carbon neutrality. \n\n\nWhat to expect \n\n\n\nUnder the noble goal of climate change mitigation\, the mainstream decarbonisation agenda demands not just cuts in the use of old materials but also the exponential growth of demand for new ones. Thus far\, it is blatantly evident that exploiting natural resources does not mean good for everyone. Neither profit nor pollution is evenly distributed worldwide and locally. With the desire to find answers to the questions of who earns and who pays with health\, dependency\, and poverty and how to achieve well-being for all while avoiding extractivist practices\, we hope to contribute to both the domestic and the international networks of green actors by forging new ties and alliances and setting the basis for further discussion on EU’s policies regarding renewable energy. \nIn this Academy\, we aim to disseminate both academic insights and activist perspectives on extractivism. Our discussions will span its historical roots\, present-day practices\, role in the global economy\, and impact on international politics. We will delve into the conceptual framework of extractivism\, exploring its potential and constraints\, and examining its intersections with neocolonialism and exploitation. However\, our primary emphasis will be on the escalating prevalence of contemporary extractivism\, highlighting the environmental risks and harm it poses\, as well as the grassroots efforts and local struggles against its detrimental effects. \n\nContext \n\n\n\nPositioned as an attractive prospect for foreign multinational companies and trade ministries\, the Western Balkan countries are often marketed as a region with “low earnings and low environmental standards.” Unfortunately\, this portrayal puts at risk the remaining protected nature areas\, drinking water resources\, and the potential for sustainable and organic agriculture. The looming threat comes from an escalating “mining frenzy” and unsustainable hydropower projects\, poised to compromise various locations. Concurrently\, a robust grassroots movement has emerged over the past decade\, opposing extractivism in its various forms. Your presence and expertise could significantly benefit this movement.
