SUMMARY:Feminists in the Climate Movement at the Green Hub
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nWomen and minorities are more likely to be affected by the consequences of climate change but are also the key people who can bring about change in their communities. Countries with more diversity in decision-making have more ambitious climate policies. But diversity doesn’t just magically happen  – it must be encouraged. Women and non-binary people need specific training to make change in traditionally male-dominated places of decision-making.  \nThis year\, GEF has selected and supported a group of twenty Feminist Climate Ambassadors to do just that. We have also run a series of public events on the nexus of gender equality and the climate crisis\, and are exploring ecofeminism and ethics of care as a potential framework for societal change. Our Green Hub programming continues this work!  \nProgramme:  \n11:00 – 12:30 Ecofeminist Roundtable: Conversation Circle on Ecofeminist Experience\, with the support of Oikos  \nAs individual selves\, we are part of a web of relationships with both human and non-human others. Within ethics of care\, we maintain nourishing and caring relationships.   \nIn this workshop\, we discuss what this entails for us\, and we put ethics of care into practice by creating a safe space for us to connect\, tell our stories and listen to each other. There is space for self-expression and deep listening.  \nThe session will be completed by a moment of body-care (through breath work and movement). Care for our physical bodies supports the connection to ourselves and helps to solidify the connections between self and the self\, self and the fellow participant\, and ultimately towards self and the world we live in.  \n  \n15:00 – 17:00 Rethinking People\, Planet and Profit with Feminist Climate Ambassadors\, with the support of Visio  \nJoin GEF’s Feminist Climate Ambassadors to renew your thinking about the three dimensions of sustainability. The ambassadors and international experts offer you a new feminist lenses and facilitate constructive conversation on environmentalism\, economy and climate policy & security.  \n\nWith our ambassadors Barbora Majdisova (Poland & Sweden)\, Louisa Mandt (Germany)\, Gabrielle Sousa e. Hiltmann (Brazil & Germany)\, Ana Díaz Vidal (Spain & Scotland)\, Claire Woods (Ireland)\, and Dilara Asardag (Cyprus & Finland). \nAdditional speakers to be announced! \n\n  \n17:00 – 19:00 Training for Feminists in the Climate Movement: How COP Works\, with the support of Green Economics Institute  \nThis is a workshop to familiarise researchers\, activists\, and policy makers as to how they can make a difference and contribute to COP26 dialogues\, with a particular eye on issues like gender equality and diverse decision making. We will start with introducing how the treaty works\, what negotiations look like\, and how different actors exert their influence. This is followed by an interactive workshop exploring participants’ own reflections and inputs.  \n\nWith Michelle Gale (Gender Progress); Jean Lambert (GPEW\, former MEP); Dr. Alexandra Harrington (Global Institute for Health and Human Rights)\, Dorothy Nalubega (Ecological Party of Uganda\, Global Greens)\, and Miriam Kennett (Green Economics Institute). Facilitated by Peg Alexander. \n\n  \nPracticalities\nVenue: Kirk Lounge at the COP26 Green Hub (The Renfield Centre – 260 Bath Street\, Glasgow\, UK). These events will be taking place entirely in person.  \nAudience: Free and open to the general public\, but pre-registration may be required and there is a maximum capacity for each session.  \nRegister: To learn more and sign up in advance\, please check out this link. To sign up for the “How COP Works” training specifically\, you can also do so here.  \n  \nOther material\nRead the COP26 Feminist Climate Ambassadors statement here \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Visio\, Green Economics Institute\, and Oikos\, and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

We’ve focused on the questions and sectors that pose a particular challenges such as agriculture\, transport infrastructure and trade\, and hydrogen for the green transition. \nWhich sectors should be prioritised for limited “green hydrogen” and what are the geopolitical implications of hydrogen imports? How does zero carbon relate to food sovereignty and the EU’s Farm to fork strategy? And what needs to change in transport infrastructure investments in Europe and overseas (e.g. through foreign aid) to ensure a zero-carbon future? \nJoin our sessions at the COP26 Green Hub to engage in this debate and learn more about our findings! \n\nContext\nThis webinar is part of the project Climate Emergency Economy–organised by GEF with the support of Green House Think Tank\, Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks\, Green Foundation Ireland\, and the Foundation for Environment and Agriculture. The project explores policies required in the most difficult sectors to decarbonise for Europe to reach net-zero emissions. \nPracticalities\nThese sessions will all take place at GEF’s COP26 Green Hub. They are open to the general public and you can join both in person or online. SUMMARY:Pilot projects on UBI
DESCRIPTION:About the event\n“The Unconditional Basic Income is a periodic cash transfer granted to all members of a political community\, without work requirement nor means-testing\, and high enough to ensure an existence in dignity and participation in society”. \nDuring this event\, we will analyse some examples of UBI pilot projects that have been developed in recent years as debunk negative stereotypes. The last part of the session will focus on deriving lessons and best practices for a future universal basic income. \nContext\nThe idea of a basic income was\, for decades\, a utopia. But the last few years have seen it become more and more real\, to the point where we now have many basic income pilot programs up and running around the world. \nThe severity of the pandemic has also highlighted the need to reduce inequalities and protect the most vulnerable. With the crisis generating so much financial loss and uncertainty\, and with public stimulus packages failing to meet the needs of millions\, we need decisive actions and bold solutions more than ever. \nSpeakers\n• Julen Bollain: Spanish economist specialising in unconditional basic income. Julen is a lecturer and researcher at the University of Mondragón (Basque Country). He is also a PhD student in Development Studies\, under the direction of Daniel Raventós. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Basic Income Network and a life member of the Basic Income Earth Network (BIEN). He is one of the protagonists of the documentary on Basic Income “RBUI\, our right to live” (2018) together with philosophers\, economists\, politicians or social activists such as Philippe Van Parijs\, Guy Standing or Louise Haagh. \nIn the 2016 elections to the Basque Parliament Julen Bollain was elected MP for Elkarrekin Podemos. During the 11th legislature he was the coalition’s economic spokesperson\, as well as acting as President of the Basque Parliament’s Health Committee \n• Mike Danson : Professor Mike Danson is an economist\, Professor Emeritus of Enterprise Policy\, Heriot-Watt University\, Visiting Professor in Energy Policy\, University of Strathclyde\, and Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. He has published widely on rural\, regional and island economies\, microbreweries\, minority languages\, and many other areas of Scottish economic policy and social development. Chair of Basic Income Network Scotland\, Chair of the 2021 BIEN (Basic Income Earth Network) world congress\, depute Convenor Jimmy Reid Foundation\, Trustee of Nordic Horizons and Community Renewal\, Mike was on the Scottish Government’s Just Transition Commission and has advised\, national and international organisations: OECD\, WHO\, EC\, trades unions and community groups. Mike is Co-Director of the Scottish Centre for Island Studies. Contact: michael.danson@hw.ac.uk. \n  \nModeration:\nSusanne Rieger: Co-president of the Green European Foundation. She has been responsible for European issues and European relations in the Catalan Green foundation Fundació Nous Horitzons (FNH) for the past ten years. \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 2nd Nov  (17:00-18:00)\nAudience: The webinar is free and open to the general public.\nRegistration: Please register here. \n  \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Transición Verde and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. SUMMARY:How do we build Community Wealth?
DESCRIPTION:Context\nA new model of economic development\, called Community Wealth Building (CWB)\, is emerging in cities and communities all over Europe. These cities are challenging the dominant economic system that puts private capital accumulation above the basic needs of people. Local policymakers are building collaborative\, inclusive\, and locally controlled economies. \nDuring this event\, we will explore the concept of CWB and discuss how local authorities can implement these ideas in their own cities. This webinar is part of the project Cities as Places of Hope\, that highlights inspiring examples of progressive cities across Europe which are the frontrunners of the social-ecological transition. \nSpeakers\n\nTom Lloyd Goodwin\, Associate Director of the Centre for Local Economic Strategies: Tom is one of the drivers of Community Wealth Building movement in the United Kingdom and will tell us about the ideas of CWB and the way it is being developed in the UK.\nSimion Blom\, Councilor of GroenLinks in Amsterdam: Simion will talk about their plans to implement the CWB model in Amsterdam.\n\n  \nProgramme\n19:00 – 19:05: Welcome and introduction by Hans Rodenburg \n19:05 – 19:20: Presentation by Tom Lloyd Goodwin \n19:20 – 19:35: Presentation by Simion Blom \n19:35 – 20:00: Questions and discussion \n  \nPracticalities\nDate and time: Thursday\, 28th October from 19:30 to 20:30 CET. \nAudience: This webinar will take place in English and is open to the general public \nRegistrations: Please register through this link. \nThis event will be organised through the ZOOM platform. \n\nAudiovisual material\n\nAdditional GEF reading material:  \n \n  \n\nThis project is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. SUMMARY:Ecopolis: Dare to Care
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nThe global Covid-19 crisis brought healthcare into the spotlight. But care extends beyond the strictly medical: it includes everything we do to preserve and restore the world. The erosion of the welfare state\, the plundering of the Global South and the crossing of planetary boundaries are worrying developments. And what about the connection between the exploitation of man and of nature?\nWhat if tomorrow we found the courage to truly care for all people and other earthlings\, for our unique living world? Seeing nature merely as raw material for plundering man\, and man as merely driven by competition: can we put that behind us? Can care be a new starting point\, based on connectedness and generosity? Can care\, as an emancipatory principle\, underpin politics and economics?\nEcopolis makes room for these questions\, and many more\, during a day of lectures\, conversations\, workshops\, literature and performance. The analyses and proposals come together from many perspectives: alert carers and emancipated people in need of care\, inspiring researchers and committed artists\, fellow citizens who start from the local context and guests who bring in experiences and wisdom from indigenous cultures and the Global South.\nBecause ecological challenges know no national or linguistic borders\, Ecopolis is diverse\, international and interactive. \n  \nContext\nEcopolis is the perfect annual day to meet people who care about a sustainable future. SUMMARY:Radical Humanism and Ecological Conversion: Ivan Illich and Alexander Langer
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nIs Europe ready for the ecological conversion that scientific evidence stresses on us? \nIvan Illich and Alexander Langer are influential interpreters of the economic critique of consumer society. Their work and practice offer many stimuli for reflection and action in the contemporary context. \nThis conference will offer the opportunity to compare Illich’s and Langer’s views and proposals\, and to examine not only their freshness and relevance but also their critical aspects. \nThe seminar will dedicate sessions to the translation of theoretical thinking into practical choices as they emerge from the different programs and practices of the Green political sphere\, in order to design and develop new humanistic approaches and environmental strategies. \nContext\nIvan Illich and Alexander Langer are two of the most authoritative interpreters of a critique of the consumer society based on the theory of market self-regulation. \nIllich’s importance in representing a critical voice towards the Western social model\, by now of global dimension\, is well known. We aim to venture further and discuss the personal trajectory and new message that he wanted to propose without coming to terms with the corruptive logics of a consumerist society\, and how can this apply to the present generations. \nLanger spoke of the social desirability of an ecological conversion even before Pope Francis did so in his Encyclical. This can only succeed when it is socially desirable. What we need is a ritual passage which has the allure of solemnity: an “ecological constituent\,” and a widespread commitment to reconsider our ways of living\, producing\, consuming in order to make our life-styles compatible with the limited amount of resources the world can provide. \nThe various conference contributions will study the religious aspects\, those linked to agricultural and territorial choices\, the theme of the frontier\, and the economic and political aspects measured by the real goods and needs of the civil communities throughout Europe. \n  \nProgramme and Speakers\nFriday\, 22/10  \n17:00 Conference opening  \n\nMauro Bozzetti & Franz Tutzer \n\n17:30 “In the sign of the flying fish:” Ivan and Alexander  \n\nBarbara Duden\, Hannover University \n\nSaturday\, 23/10  \n9:00 It is not enough to be indignant. SUMMARY:Towards a fair and sustainable food system: The Transformative Potential of Agroecology
DESCRIPTION:About the event:\nThe food industry is one of the main factors behind biodiversity loss and the worsening of global inequalities. We aim to contribute to a better understanding of the food system as a tool for social change. It is vital to understand the different processes and exercise critical thinking\, as actors in the agri-food system become aware\, act\, and demand change. \nThese project will be decided into sessions that will have a European focus\, but also a global one\, as global is the agri-food business and\, above all\, its impacts. The Common Agricultural Policy and the different European strategies and policies (From Farm to Fork) will be present throughout this series of roundtables in September/ October and with the speakers we will try to analyse their positive and negative aspects regarding the topics discussed. \n  \nProgramme:\n5. THE TRANSFORMATIVE POTENTIAL OF AGROECOLOGY \nAgroecology is a way of farming that focuses on food production that makes the best use of nature’s goods and services while not damaging these resources. It is an in-depth transformative tool to develop sustainable agri-food systems\, moving away from the industrial system. \nAgroecology teaches us that there is another way of looking at the world\, a more sustainable and fairer way to feed humanity\, respecting the environment\, and taking care of both producers and consumers. \nAgroecological initiatives are on the rise as they favour soil regeneration\, water protection\, and safeguards biodiversity. It protects our health\, promotes employment\, fair wages\, makes women’s work visible and valued\, and revitalizes the rural economy. \nHowever\, the adjective “agroecological” can hide a distinct reality. Large agri-food companies have found in agroecology a new business opportunity\, albeit one that promotes their vision based on profit and is far removed from its transformative component. They incorporate certain practices to mitigate some agricultural affects but avoid touching the pillars holding the current industrial system. In this session\, we will further explore this issue. We will also look at the EU’s strategies and policies to promote agroecology. We will also learn about two agroecological experiences: the Ecocomedores in the Canary Islands and the projects of the El Colletero Association ( \nSpeakers:\n* Andrés Muñoz\, Head of Food Sovereignty at Friends of the Earth specialising in\nawareness raising and advocacy on Food Sovereignty.\n* Aina Calafat\nHead of international projects of the Spanish Society of Organic Agriculture and Agroecology. She\nworked for almost 20 years as technical director of the Consell Balear de la Producció Agrària\nEcològica.\n* Margarita Hernández\nTechnician at the Canary Islands Institute of Agri-food Quality (ICCA) and coordinator of the\nEcocomedores (eco canteens) programme.\n* Raquel Ramírez\nrepresentative of El Colletero (Nalda – La Rioja)\, an association that promotes agroecology to\nachieve sustainable development and equality.\nModeration:\n* Helena Cifre\nCoordinator of the Spanish Society of Organic Agriculture and Agroecology. Law graduate\,\necofeminist and expert in responsible consumption. \nPracticalities:\nWhere: Online platform – ZOOM \nTime and date: 21 October\, 17:30-19:00 PM CET \nLanguage: Simultaneous translation to English \nAudience: these series of webinars are open for the general public \nRegistrations: Registrations are now open <<< \n \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Transición Verde and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. SUMMARY:UBI & the COVID-19 pandemic
DESCRIPTION:About the event\n“The Unconditional Basic Income is a periodic cash transfer granted to all members of a political community\, without work requirement nor means-testing\, and high enough to ensure an existence in dignity and participation in society”. \nDuring this event\, we’ll put UBI on the spotlight as a driving solution to tackle poverty and income inequality and other problems in a changing world. \nWe will also review GEF brochure on social policy responses to COVID-19\, which examines the social policy reactions to the Covid-19 crisis in a dozen different European countries. \nContext\nThe COVID-19 crisis continues to change the way we live our lives\, and how social services continue to respond to the needs of the most vulnerable. This crisis will affect how governments plan their future responses to social emergencies\, and UBI could be one effective way to do it. \nThis event is part of our knowledge community ‘A welfare state of the 21st century’. The Green European Foundation has been working on this issue for several years with the aim of opening a debate on UBI across Europe. We are now joining forces with other social actors to give this effort a broader scope. \nAs the debate continues\, we too would be interested in expanding our analysis to include new information and additional countries. \nSpeakers\n• Valerija Korošec\, PhD in Postmodern Sociology. She is a representative of Slovenia in the Basic Income Earth Network (BIEN) and the European Network for the Fair Sharing of Working Time.\n• Natalie Bennet\, Green member of the House of Lords in the UK. Former leader of the Green Party of England and Wales from 2012 to 2016. She previously spent 20\nyears working as a journalist\, (the Bangkok Post\, The Times\, and the Guardian Weekly)\n• Simo Raittila\, Coordinator of the Finnish think tank Visio and a PhD student in Sociology at the University of Helsinki. In 2018 he worked on last-resort social assistance register research at Kela\, the Social Insurance Institution of Finland. \nModeration:\nHannes Mehrer. Coordinator of the Basic income working Group of the German Green party and of the Green Network of UBI supporters. \n  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: October 19th (17:00-18:00)\nAudience: The webinar is free and open to the general public.\nRegistration: Please register in advance via this link. \n  \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Transición Verde and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. SUMMARY:Practicing Food Sovereignty in the Climate Emergency
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nGEF\, with the support of Green Foundation Ireland and Cultivate\, has built on our 2020 publication ‘A Question of SCALE’ and the findings of a webinar held in June 2021 to produce a new pamphlet: ‘Food Sovereignty\, Climate Action and Local Resilience.’ \nThis launch event will include conversations with leading Irish and European advocates of regenerative agriculture\, rural regeneration\, and sustainability. Drawing from the pamphlet\, it will explore how we might take climate action and strengthen the resilience and wellbeing of our local places through the practice of food sovereignty. \nContext\nThis webinar is part of the project Climate Emergency Economy–organised by GEF with the support of Green House Think Tank\, Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks\, Green Foundation Ireland\, and the Foundation for Environment and Agriculture. The project explores policies required in ‘hard-to-reach’ sectors for Europe to reach zero carbon. In 2021\, activities are centred around three key pillars: agriculture\, hydrogen\, and transport infrastructure and trade. \nSpeakers\n\nThomas Waitz – Austrian MEP (Greens/EFA)\, ecological farmer and forester\nEwa Sufin-Jacquemart – Director of the Green Polish foundation “Strefa Zieleni”  \nJudith Hitchman – Food sovereignty activist and president of Urgenci\, the global Community Supported Agriculture network \nMike Small – Scottish freelance writer\, journalist\, author and publisher.  He worked in the Fife district of Scotland to develop new models of organizing around local food that culminated in a book titled Scotland’s Local Food Revolution. \nLisa Fingleton – Artist\, grower\, writer and filmmaker based on an organic farm on the Wild Atlantic Way in Ireland. Her book The Local Food Project explores the power of growing and eating local food. \nBridget Murphy – Regenerative hill farmer based in County Sligo and Core Group member of Talamh Beo\, an alliance of farmers\, growers and land-workers on the island of Ireland. \nModerated by Davie Philip (Cultivate / ECOLISE.eu) \n\nPracticalities\nThis webinar will be taking place via Zoom\, in English. As always\, there will be an interactive Q&A section which will allow full participation by those attending.  \nPlease register in advance via this link. Contact info@greenfoundationireland.ie with any further questions.  \n\nThis project is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Green Foundation Ireland and Cultivate\, with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.  \n

SUMMARY:The Green Hydrogen Transition
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nHydrogen produced from renewable electricity will play a crucial role in the transition to a climate-neutral Europe\, but its adoption raises several issues. These stem from the fact that green hydrogen will be scarce well into the next decade. \nDoes the European Union need a ‘hydrogen ladder’ that puts forward green hydrogen for the industries that are more difficult to decarbonise? Or would this actually slow down the breakthrough of green hydrogen? \nProduced from natural gas\, ‘Blue hydrogen’ has most of its CO2 emissions captured and stored. According to its proponents\, it can pave the way for green hydrogen. What role can blue hydrogen play as a transition fuel and feedstock? \nA growing number of companies and governments\, including the European Commission\, want to invest in the production of green hydrogen in Africa\, the Middle East and other parts of the world that are rich in sun or wind. Will the import of green hydrogen create new geopolitical and ethical risks for the European Union? \nThis roundtable will be moderated by Suzanne Kröger\, former MP for GroenLinks (Netherlands). \nContext:\nThis webinar is part of the project Climate Emergency Economy–organised by GEF with the support of Green House Think Tank\, Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks\, Green Foundation Ireland\, and the Foundation for Environment and Agriculture. The project explores policies required in ‘hard-to-reach’ sectors for Europe to reach zero carbon. In 2021\, activities revolve around three key pillars: agriculture\, hydrogen\, and transport infrastructure and trade. \nPracticalities\nDate and time: Friday 15 October\, from 14:00 to 16:00 CEST  \nAudience: This roundtable is invitation-only.  \nContact: Richard Wouters\, rwouters (at) groenlinks.nl    \n\nThis project is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. SUMMARY:Green Horizons Academy: The Good Story
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nThe Green Horizons Academy is an educational programme that aims to expand the ideas surrounding the green movement towards the alternative liveable future across Europe. Addressing the climate crisis and environmental issues is a home ground for the greens. Still\, we need to better prepare for the forthcoming battles of narratives\, where everyone is “playing the green card”. \nPopulists and conservative authoritarians\, especially in countries with a weak green opposition\, are casting a long shadow over social movements and appropriating environmentalism. Europe’s narrative of openness and solidarity has been put to the test amid the pandemic. The Academy is a space for theory and practice that can serve both for political actors to step into closer communication with the people\, and for citizens to politicize the growing environmental struggles. \nThis year’s Green Horizons Academy’s main topic is building a successful narrative around green values that resonates with the broad public\, therefore its title – THE GOOD STORY. \nOver three days\, we hope to inspire European green actors and raise the capacities of citizens from South-East Europe in their approach to presenting green values and agendas. GHA will also examine the resilience of the local Green political organisations and offer the space for authentic policy debates designed for and from the region. The time has come for green-minded actors to create a cultural uprising\, painting our views as possible\, tangible\, and popular! From the academic field of political theory to the environmental activists and new movements\, the Green Horizons Academy will present\, discuss\, and articulate democratic\, feminist\, sustainable and just alternatives. \nProgramme\nThe 3-day event consists of two interlinked parts:  \n\nclosed daily workshops (registered participants only\, in physical space)  \npublic evening sessions (online) with lectures and panels covering various topics \n\nFriday\, 15 October  \n17:30 Welcome  \n18:00 –  19:15 PUBLIC SESSION: Moving of the Movements (panel): Analysis of the development cycle of the environmental movements\, where are they today\, what messages are they sending\, and what are the roadmaps to success.  \n\nPablo Dominguez (Senior Eco-Anthropologist at the National Council for Scientific Research CNRS\, France) \nSafet Kubat (Eco Movement Rivers of Bosnia and Herzegovina – Be the Change\, PhD candidate in political ecology) \nAleksandar Dragićević (Coalition for Sustainable Development\, Montenegro) \n\n\nŽaklina Živković (Right to Water\, Serbia) \nModerator: Bojana Selaković (Civic Initiatives) \n\n19:30 – 20:45 PUBLIC SESSION: Environmentalism Gone Rights and Wrong (panel): Populist and conservative influences in environmental struggles and our green and left alternative.  \n\nSpeaker: Balša Lubarda – an environmental sociologist specializing in environmental communication\, radicalism\, right-wing politics and political ideologies. FOOD SOVEREIGNTY VERSUS CORPORATE CONTROL \nThe logic of liberalism applied to agri-food markets has led to the accumulation of political and economic power by a small group of actors in critical sectors of the food chain. \nPowerful agricultural companies dictate the rules for the functioning of the entire system. They exercise influence on policy-makers to boost policies that promote a productivity-based form of agriculture\, neglecting any form of environmental responsibility or social justice. \nWho’s in charge of making these decisions and in whose interests? How do these corporations exercise power? What is the EU doing to control this power and guarantee food sovereignty? Is food sovereignty compatible with free-market models as we know them today? Are there economic alternatives? In this session\, we will try to delve deeper into the web of interests that are endangering food sovereignty and security. \nSpeakers:\n* Vandana Shiva\none of the most influential women in the field of ecology and ecofeminism. PhD in Physics\,\nphilosopher and writer\, she has received numerous awards such as the Right Livelihood Award\,\nthe UN Global 500 Award and the Sanctuary Wildlife Award..\n* Sofía Monsalve\nSecretary General of FIAN International where she coordinated the land and natural resources\nprogramme for more than 15 years. SUMMARY:Just Transition for All?
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThis three-day seminar will serve as a place to discuss opportunities and limits of just transition and explore its transformative potential. \n During the seminar\, we will: \n\nprovide a first approach to the concept of just transition\,\ndiscuss the role of trade unions and workers\,\ndiscuss the transfer from extractive to regenerative economy\,\nexplore just transition to a European and global level in solidarity\,\nLink it to recovery plans and European Green deal\,\nExplore opportunities for decent jobs\,\ndiscuss specific conditions of just transition at European semi periphery\n\nAlso\, we will dive much deeper into just transition in the transport sector\, where we will learn and discuss under which conditions sustainable mobility can become an example of just transition policies. \nWe see this seminar as one milestone in a systemic approach to concepts and practices of just transition in this part of Europe\, and an important milestone in establishing epistemic communities in this field. \n\nThis project is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of the Institute for Political Ecology in cooperation with the Heinrich Böll Foundation\, Prague office\, and the European Climate Initiative with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. SUMMARY:Towards a fair and sustainable food system: The Hidden Cost of Cheap Food
\n  \nProgramme:\n3. THE HIDDEN COST OF CHEAP FOOD  \nThe EU is responsible for more than 10% of global deforestation. Global soy production -driven by a growing demand to provide food for large industrial meat farms- has more than doubled since 1997.\nThis rapid expansion is destroying some of the world’s most biodiverse ecosystems\, such as the Amazon and the Cerrado and Gran Chaco forests in South America. \nAquaculture is the fastest-growing food sector in the world. Multinationals in the aquaculture sector present fish and shellfish farming as a cheap solution to the natural limits of fisheries. These fish\, however\, have to be fed on fishmeal and fish oil\, most of which is made from wild-caught fish and crustaceans. Spain is the EU Country with the highest production\, accounting for almost a quarter of the entire union. \nThe production of cheap food has profound environmental\, social\, and health impacts. In this session\, we will focus on soy monoculture for livestock feed\, industrial aquaculture\, and animal suffering. \nSpeakers:\n* Olga Kikou\nEuropean Affairs Manager at Compassion in World Farming. She was President of the Green Greek\nInstitute and a member of the Board of the Green European Foundation.\n* Nazaret Castro\nJournalist\, PhD in Social Sciences and co-founder of Carro de Combate\, a collective dedicated to\nindependent journalism\, which investigates the origin of the products we consume.\n* Natasha Hurley\nCampaign Manager Changing Markets where she is currently running a campaign to eradicate the\nuse of wild-caught fish in aquaculture. She was formerly Climate Campaigner at EIA lobbying for a\nglobal phase-out of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs)\n* Thomas Waitz\nCo-chair of the European Green Party\, MEP in the Greens/EFA Group. His work focuses on\nsustainable agriculture\, regional production and healthy food\, the Common Agricultural Policy\nand the reform of the animal transport directive. \nModeration:\n* Lidia Ucher\nJournalist specialising in social communication in the field of cooperation\, the third sector and\necology. \nPracticalities:\nWhere: Online platform – ZOOM \nTime and date: 7 October\, 17:30-19:00 PM CET \nLanguage: Simultaneous translation to English \nAudience: these series of webinars are open for the general public \nRegistrations: Registrations are now open <<< \n \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Transición Verde and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. SUMMARY:A Basic Income for Europe
DESCRIPTION:About the event\n“The Unconditional Basic Income is a periodic cash transfer granted to all members of a political community\, without work requirement nor means-testing\, and high enough to ensure an existence in dignity and participation in society”. \nDuring this event\, we’ll seek to analyse if a European UBI is possible. We’ll put the focus on what benefits it would bring compared to nationwide implementation and how institutions could finance it. \nWe will also review how the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) for a European Basic Income emerged and whether European society is actually ready for a basic income. \nContext\nViews on a guaranteed basic income vary drastically across Europe. In 2020 a Universal Basic Income ECI was launched to request the EU Commission to make a proposal for unconditional basic incomes throughout the EU to reduce regional disparities and to strengthen the economic\, social and territorial cohesion in the EU. \nSpeakers\n\nMalcolm Torry. Dr. Malcolm Torry is a Visiting Fellow at the Institute for Policy Research at the University of Bath and treasurer of the Basic Income Earth Network (BIEN)\, and was until recently a visiting senior fellow at the London School of Economics and director of the Citizen’s Basic Income Trust. He has written a number of books about Basic Income\, and for nearly twenty years has researched the financial feasibility of illustrative Basic Income schemes.\n\n  \n\nKlaus Sambor. One of the main initiators of activities surrounding basic income in Austria and in Europe and one of the main organizers of the European Citizens’ Initiative “Start Unconditional Basic Incomes (UBI) throughout the EU”\, which is taking place in all countries of the European Union.\n\n  \nModeration: \nEwa Suffin-Jacquemart.  Member of the Board of the Green European Foundation and Director of the Polish green foundation Fundacja Strefa Zieleni.\n  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: October 5th (17:00-18:00)\nAudience: The webinar is free and open to the general public.\nRegistration: Please register in advance via this link. \n  \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Transición Verde and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. SUMMARY:Call for Participants: Green Horizons Academy
DESCRIPTION:About the Call\nThe Green European Foundation and the Organisation for Political Ecology POLEKOL are launching a call for participants for the first Green Horizons Academy\, under the title “The Good Story.”   \nWe are looking for participants that are active in environmental movements\, civic initiatives\, academic institutions and/or political organizations with green policy agenda. This three-day event will give you the opportunity to:  \n\nLearn about political ecology and the green political idea in Europe \nPut forward ways to bring the green agenda into practice in South-East Europe  \n\n\nImprove your green values communication skills \nCreate an affirmative green narrative on sustainability\, alternative to the populist one \nNetwork with potential green-minded allies \n\nContext\nThe Green Horizons Academy is an educational programme that aims to expand the imaginary of the broad green movement towards the alternative liveable future across Europe. Addressing the climate crisis and environmental issues is a home ground for the greens. Still\, we need to prepare for the forthcoming battles of narratives\, especially at a time where everyone is “playing the green card”. \nDuring three days of lectures\, debates\, and workshops\, we hope to inspire European green actors and raise the capacities of citizens from South-East Europe in their approach to presenting green values and agenda. GHA will also examine the resilience of the existing Green political organisations in the region and offer the space for authentic policy debates designed for and from the region. \nPracticalities\nThe Green Horizons Academy will take place in Belgrade\, Serbia from 15-17 October. The language of the event is BCS and English\, and translation will be provided.   \nPlease apply by filling out this online form. The application deadline is Monday\, October 4th. If you have any questions\, please send an email to organizacija.polekol@gmail.com.  \nAll applicants will be informed about the selection results by October 6th.  \nAs we are still in the middle of the pandemic\, as a safety precaution\, all participants will be Covid tested at the spot\, right before the event starts.   \nThe programme will be held in a hybrid model\, where selected participants are in the physical space\, and evening sessions are live streamed for the public.  \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation\, with the support of PolEkol and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Germany after Merkel – Consequences for Southern Europe
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nGermany will be heading to the polls on September 26th to elect a new government. Citizens across Europe will follow the results with anticipation – also in Spain and Catalonia.\nIs a green government possible? What will the results mean for German relations with Southern Europe? Will a potential Green Wave help Spanish and Catalan Greens gain more space and influence too?\nWe will discuss these and other questions with our guest speakers. Together we’ll try to get insight into what could be a consequential moment in European politics. \n  \nContext:\nThe Green-Red Dialogues began in 2020 to trigger a reflection on current issues from explicitly green and social perspectives. The challenges we face as a result of the COVID-19 crisis are new and unpredictable. Today we highlight the need to reverse the consequences of a capitalist system that generated the pandemic and has also caused irreparable cracks in our planet. A capitalist system that fosters social inequality and that assails the Earth.\nWe cannot fall into fatalistic discourse and convey the message that all is lost\, and consequently\, there isn’t much more to do. Instead\, we must disseminate proposals and make EU citizens aware that an alternative way of living is possible – that green policies are compatible with a prosperous economy\, progress\, and development.\nWith this in mind\, the Green Red Dialogues continue in 2021\, once again providing the space for European policymakers\, academics\, activists\, and citizens to address today’s challenges – combining current affairs and in-depth analysis to spark vibrant discussions about greener\, more socially just solutions. \n  \nSpeakers:\nReinhard Bütikofer – German MEP\, European Greens\nCarme Colomina – researcher specialising in the EU\, disinformation\, and global politics at CIDOB (Barcelona Centre for International Affairs)\nMaría-Paz López – La Vanguardia\, Berlin correspondent \nWelcome by Susanne Rieger (co-president of the Green European Foundation)\nModeration by Marc Rius \n  \nPracticalities:\nDate and Time: September 30th (16:00-17:30)\nAudience: The webinar is free and open to the general public.\nThere will be simultaneous interpretation in Spanish and English.\nRegistration: Please register in advance via this link. \n  \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Nous Horitzons and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. SUMMARY:International Development Finance and the Climate Emergency
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThis webinar is part of the project Climate Emergency Economy. It is organised by GEF with the support of Green House Think Tank\, Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks\, Green Foundation Ireland\, and the Foundation for Environment and Agriculture. The project explores policies required in hard-to-decarbonise sectors for Europe to reach net-zero emissions. In 2021\, we identify three industries that are among the most difficult to decarbonize: agriculture\, hydrogen\, and transport infrastructure and trade. \nContext\nGovernments and other investors are moving away from directly financing fossil fuel extraction–in response to successful campaigning in the Global South and North. Yet they are still funding governments to develop their economies in ways that depend on fossil fuels and worsen the climate emergency. \nAid\, export credit and other finance mechanisms are pushing mining and resource extraction\, fossil fuel-based development and forms of trade that exacerbate both the climate crisis and global inequity. Meanwhile\, there is an urgent need to help countries in the Global South mitigate and adapt to climate change. This is a simple matter of climate justice. \nPlease join us to share ideas on how we can redirect policy to make it fit for a climate emergency economy. \nSpeakers\n\nNatalie Bennett – Green Party peer and former leader of the Green Party of England and Wales \nJonathan Essex – chartered engineer and environmentalist \nDorothy Grace Guerrero – head of Policy & Advocacy at Global Justice Now \nSilvia Brugger – coordinator Climate Governance at GIZ \nCONCORD Europe\, speaker TBA\n\nProgramme \n19:00 Welcome and introduction with Natalie Bennett and Peter Sims  \n19:05 Jonathan Essex: key findings from forthcoming report  \n19:20 Dorothy Grace Guerrero: how aid and international finance contribute to the climate emergency and climate injustice  \n19:30 Silvia Brugger: how donors can support governments to address the threat of climate change – examples from GIZ’s work  \n19:40 CONCORD Europe: tbc  \n19:55 Summary and Q&A  \nPracticalities\nThis event will take place online on Wednesday\, September 29th (19:00 – 20:30 CEST).  \nAdmission is free but please register in advance via this link.  \n  \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Green House Think Tank and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.   \nImage: Railway construction in Azerbaijan (credit: Asian Development Bank)

SUMMARY:Towards a fair and sustainable food system: The Water Challenge
DESCRIPTION:About the event:\nThe food industry is one of the main factors behind biodiversity loss and the worsening of global inequalities. The Common Agricultural Policy and the different European strategies and policies (From Farm to Fork) will be present throughout this series of roundtables in September/ October and with the speakers we will try to analyse their positive and negative aspects regarding the topics discussed. \n  \nThe Water Challenge Programme:\nAccording to the FAO’s State of Food and Agriculture 2020 report\, available freshwater resources per person have decreased by more than 20% in the last two decades. \n1.2 billion people live in agricultural areas with severe water availability constraints. The agricultural sector and industrial livestock farming are largely responsible for this both through their high water\nconsumption and the pollution of aquifers they cause. \nClimate change is affecting rainfall patterns and jeopardising food security in the most vulnerable areas of the planet. We can say that we are facing a global water crisis. Increasingly\, the water transition and fair and sustainable management of water is essential. \nIn this debate\, we will talk about the repercussions of the water crisis on food systems. We will focus on the impact of agriculture and the implications of the CAP on water resources. We will conclude by exploring the proposals from agroecology for the protection and management of these resources. As an example of the impact on aquatic ecosystems\, we will look at the case of the Mar Menor (Spain). \nSpeakers: \n* Pedro García\nDirector of Asociación de Naturalistas del Sureste (the Southeastern Naturalists’ Association). He\nhas been environmental technician in the local administration for more than 20 years\n* Celsa Peiteado\nAgricultural engineer and head of the Food Programme at WWF Spain where she coordinates\npolicy work for agroecological transition to Sustainable and Resilient Food Systems.\n* Concha Fabeiro\nPresident of the Spanish Society of Organic Agriculture and Agroecology (SEAE).
