SUMMARY:Dark shades of green: The political struggle for the narrative of the young environmental movements in the Western Balkans
DESCRIPTION:About this event\nThe right-wing has for a long time been associated with climate denial and justifications of industrial pollution. However\, this rhetoric seems to be changing\, and environmental issues are becoming central to right-wing politics. In the Western Balkans\, environmental problems are emerging as a mobilizing factor across different political actors and social movements. Issues that are traditionally claimed by the progressive greens\, are now coming into focus of the populist right\, opening new fields for reaching and engaging otherwise passive citizens. Driven by the unsustainable re-industrialization\, the growth in the construction sector\, and new\, often foreign investments in mining\, fossil fuels\, land grabs and destruction of nature\, environmental threats are ever more mobilizing the citizens on the anti-establishment wave. Catching sight of the loss of the EU perspective and the increased post-truth crisis during the pandemic conditions\, the right wing is not missing their chance. The struggle for nature is often painted with nationalist and traditionalist narratives. \nOn the other hand\, the greens nor the left do not seem to be keeping pace with these developments\, appearing unfit to offer credible alternatives to the populist narratives of the local grassroots movements. The environmental civil society initiatives\, and the social justice and human rights organizations\, are not connected enough\, and their knowledge and experiences are atomized. In addition\, many actors are insisting that the environment is intrinsically an “apolitical” issue\, accusing each other of “hijacking” it. These processes are not only happening in the Western Balkans\, however there is an important specific context related to the recent history and genealogy of the green movement. In the context of a blurred EU perspective for the Western Balkans\, and in the absence of strong green and left alternatives\, will the right wing populism succeed in appropriating the topic of environmental justice? How can the progressive forces be enabled to take the lead in environmental struggles? \nThe discussion is opening one of the important questions of many about the future of green politics in Europe. We are happy to use this opportunity to present Serbian translations of the publications with extended analysis of political ecology from the greens perspective – the Green European Journal editions: A World Alive: Green Politics in Europe and Beyond and 2049: Open Future. \n  \nSpeakers:\nBalša Lubarda is an environmental sociologist specializing in environmental communication\, radicalism\, right-wing politics and political ideologies. He is also a Doctoral Fellow and the Head of Ideology Research Unit at the Centre for Analysis of the Radical Right\, as well as a member of the Emancipatory Rural Politics Initiative (European branch). His research has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as Environmental Values\, Sociologia Ruralis and other non-academic outlets\, including New Eastern Europe\, Fair Observer\, Open Democracy\, Undisciplined Environments\, Altre Economia etc. Balša has also provided commentary for The BBC Radio 4 and The New York Times. \nDamir Zejnulahović is a PhD student of sociology at the Faculty of Philosophy of Belgrade University. He completed his undergraduate studies of sociology at the same faculty\, where he took courses in “Culture” and “Politics” modules during his undergraduate studies. He got his Master degree in sociology\, at the same faculty\, defending his master thesis „Ideological underpinnings of a conservative Srpski pokret Dveri”. The focus of his research interests are political sociology\, sociology of knowledge\, historical sociology\, critique of ideology. \nIva Marković is an environmental activist and researcher in political ecology from Belgrade. Her current focus is on water as a common good and on developing alternative policies for sustainable governing of natural wealth. Her interests are in commons\, natural resources management\, social impact of climate change\, degrowth\, just energy transition and ecofeminism. She is involved in organizing left and green actors and networking inside the environmental movement. SUMMARY:Women for Climate – A Just Transition
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nWhat is a just transition of coal regions from the feminist perspective? What does transition look like in Poland and in other European countries? Do the current solutions ensure equal participation of men and women in decision-making processes? What role do women play in the broader just transition movement? In which approach to transformation is the gender perspective particularly relevant? \nThese and other questions will be answered by politicians and activists from Poland\, the Czech Republic and Germany. \n  \nContext\nThis is the second of four public webinars as part of the project “Feminists in the Climate Movement\,” organised by GEF with the support of Visio\, Green Economics Institute\, Oikos\, and Fundacja Strefa Zieleni. She is the co-chair of the Green party in Bonn and deals in particular with energy policy and climate protection\, incl. following the UN climate negotiations. SUMMARY:Metals in the Energy and Digital Transition: Limits and Impacts
DESCRIPTION:[ENG]\n – para leer la descripción en ESP\, vean más abajo –\n  \nThere is no doubt that the climate crisis makes the energy transition to renewable sources indispensable. The 2015 Paris Agreement was a historic milestone\, at least on paper\, in terms of reducing emissions and boosting renewable energy. But some issues have not been sufficiently resolved\, issues linked to the metals required for the “green” and digital technologies on which the energy transition is based. \nIn this session we will talk about the mineral limits of the energy transition and the implications that these limits bring with them. Are we willing to accept the impacts of mining for the benefit of the energy transition? What is the situation of the mining project in Cáceres? Does the current Spanish Mining Law of 1973 guarantee clean and responsible mining? \n\nContext:\n \nThe technologies that make the energy transition possible are based on a wide variety of metals and huge quantities of them. Photovoltaic panels\, wind turbines or electric cars would not exist without them. Tellurium\, cobalt\, copper\, gallium\, indium\, lithium\, nickel and zinc are some of these essential elements\, all of which are at risk of being in short supply in the future\, either because they are scarce in nature or because they are controlled by few countries. \nGiven this fact\, a key question is how to supply the metals demand of the energy transition. In addition to diversifying imports\, one of the EU’s objectives is to strengthen its strategic autonomy by increasing its internal supply capacity. In Spain alone\, in recent years\, applications have been submitted for several hundred new mining operations\, which have been met with significant social protest. An emblematic case\, due to its proximity to the historic centre of Cáceres\, a World Heritage Site\, and due to the environmental and social impacts that it may entail\, is the San José de Valdeflores open-pit mining project for the extraction of lithium. \n\n  \nSpeakers:\n\nAlicia Valero is a chemical engineer and head of the Industrial Ecology group at the Research Centre for Energy Resources and Consumption (CIRCE Institute).\nJuantxo López de Uralde is a Member of the Spanish Parliament for Unidas Podemos and president of the Ecological Transition Commission.\nSantiago Martín-Barajas is a member of Ecologistas en Acción and expert on water\, mining\, energy\, etc.\n\n  \nThe session will be moderated by Cárol García\, who is a journalist and political scientist. Pero algunas cuestiones no han quedado suficientemente resueltas\, cuestiones ligadas a los metales que requieren las tecnologías “verdes” y digitales en que se basa la transición energética. \n¿Está garantizado el suministro de metales para hacer posible la transición ecológica? ¿Dónde y cómo se obtienen esos metales?. ¿Qué implicaciones ambientales y sociales tiene su extracción\, transformación y posterior retorno como residuo? ¿Hasta qué punto está garantizada la salud y la protección del medio ambiente en las zonas mineras? ¿Cuál será el nuevo marco geopolítico mundial derivado de estas materias primas estratégicas? ¿Qué papel va a jugar la Unión Europea en esta nueva coyuntura? ¿Está dispuesta a cargar con los costes ambientales derivados de la transición energética? \nAunque no es fácil dar respuesta a estas cuestiones\, no es menos cierto que el debate sobre cómo debe realizarse la ineludible transición energética no debe ser postergado. DESCRIPTION:About this course\nThe upcoming online course: “Cities for all: Inclusive urban planning and decision making in Eastern European cities” will take place on the Green European Foundation‘s  online learning platform Green Academy during May 2021. Aside from interactive educational content on the platform\, learners will have the opportunity to acquire new knowledge\, have fun and meet new people on weekly meetings\, webinars with experts and workshops. \nThe course attendants will be encouraged to continue their learning in the scope of the project during the second phase which will take place in Croatia in July 2021 (subject to  COVID19 restrictions). The involvement in both events is a precondition for applying for Local Actions sub-grants that will take place in September 2021. \nThe Online Course “Cities for all: why?”  will aim to understand how patriarchy shapes our cities\, urban infrastructure and lives of urban youth and has the following objectives: \n\nProvide the participants with the theoretical knowledge on how cities are affecting the lives of young people of different genders and sexualities.\nCreate an inter-cultural safe space for young women and LGBT+ people to share their struggles and stimulate the discussion on the values\, principles and the directions about the future of inclusive cities.\nEmpower the participants with the tools and analytical skills for identifying local challenges of their communities in regards of gender inclusive city planning.\n\nThe course will be based on the principles of non-formal education and intercultural learning. We strive for an active\, safe and inclusive environment for direct communication and sharing of knowledge. SUMMARY:Call for Author: Youth Chapter for the Just Transition Book
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nThe chapter will be published in the Book on Just Transition produced as part of the multiannual and multipartner project carried out by the Green European Foundation\, led by Oikos and participated by green European partners. It will be divided in five parts: (1) Setting the stage\, (2) European regions on their way\, (3) Just transition and the EU Green Deal\, (4) Frontrunners showing the way\, and (5) Conclusions. The Youth Chapter will open part 4. \nWe are looking for someone who can bring a fresh perspective and nuanced insights into the following questions: \n\nHow do young people take the future into their own hands?\nHow are grassroots movements changing the narrative and convincing politicians to push for a socially just transition?\nHow are young activists from marginalised communities and minority groups impacted by climate change\, and how are they fighting for climate justice?\nWhy are current EU programmes such as Next Generation EU not good enough?\nHow has the pandemic transformed the efforts of grassroots activists and changed their methods to create impact?\n\nWe are looking for one or two young authors with a passion for writing who are interested in the topic and committed to unpack the relation between the work of activists everywhere in Europe and the political advancement towards a more sustainable\, welcoming and fairer Europe. \n  \nContext\nAbout the chapter: \n\nThe content of the chapter should have a strong focus on the role of youth\, grassroots and marginalised and minority groups in achieving a better and more just transition away from fossil fuels towards a socially and environmentally sustainable future\nThe chapter should have a clear sub-structure (contextual introduction\, main body divided in sub-sections and topics\, summarising conclusion) and can include various formats (analysis\, essays\, case studies and/or interviews)\nThe chapter should support analysis with figures and examples from at least three European countries (including at least one non-EU)\nThe chapter should consist of 4000 to 6000 words\nThe contribution should be written in English\nThe remuneration for the writing of the chapter is EUR 500\n\nWe accept both individual and joint applications of maximum two authors to co-write the chapter. DESCRIPTION:About GEF\nThe Green European Foundation (GEF) is a European level political foundation funded by the European Parliament. DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nBe Brave Summer Festival  \nThe 6-day long\, community-managed\, outdoor summer festival will potentially bring together 300 Young Greens and representatives of youth green movements to look back at the challenges and learnings of this period of digital organising\, as well as to undertake a journey of introspective reflection of our groups and movements to imagine a way forward for more inclusivity and resiliency. \nPlease note: the final number of participants and number of festival days will be decided at a later stage and both figures might consequently be reduced to comply with national and EU restrictions. \n\nContext\nWith the general aim to pursue more inclusive and democratic interactions\, processes and structures among youth-led groups and organisations\, the event’s concrete objectives are to: \n\nExplore the struggles with active participation for youth-led organisations\, movements and informal groups in different parts of Europe;\nCreate space to reflect on the common culture of green youth organisations and movements\, including elements of supremacy culture\, patriarchal structures and canceling culture\, as well as undergoing a process of collective imagination to envision how a society free of these elements looks like;\nEquip young people with tools to analyse and transform the organisational structures\, participation methods and decision-making processes of their groups; and\nPromote and develop skills of community organising.\n\nIn order to achieve these objectives\, we are looking for four young activists to join forces with the rest of the preparatory team composed of FYEG’s Project Manager\, a member of FYEG Executive Committee\, and a team member nominated by the host organisation. Prep-team members should speak English\, be available during the preparation period\, be responsible about fulfilling their tasks\, have good organisational skills\, be good team players\, be committed to the aims of the project and FYEG’s values\, and be familiar with non-formal education methods. DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nOur first Green-Red Dialogue of 2021 will tackle the sustainable production and consumption of food\, from a multi-disciplinary approach. Because everything is fundamentally connected\, from the mistreatment of animals and lack of respect for the vital cycles of nature to job insecurity in the countries that supply us. From landscape changes and deforestation to the air we breathe and consequences on our health. \nThe COVID-19 pandemic has forced us to slow down and reassess our consumption patterns\, highlighting the importance of local trade and local production and making everyone a bit more aware of the risks involved. With the help of our speakers\, we will explore these issues further\, hoping to take advantage of this moment to consolidate some beneficial changes as we move beyond the crisis. \nContext:\nThe Green-Red Dialogues began in 2020 as a way to reflect on current issues from explicitly green and social perspectives. The challenges we face as a result of the COVID-19 crisis are new and unpredictable. Today it is more urgent than ever to reverse the consequences of a capitalist system that not only brought forth the pandemic but has also caused irreparable cracks in our planet. A capitalist system that has been shown to foster social inequality and that assaults the Earth. \nWe cannot fall into fatalistic discourse and convey the message that all is lost and that\, consequently\, we cannot do much more. SUMMARY:Metals in the Energy and Digital Transition: The EU Facing an Uncertain Scenario
DESCRIPTION:[ENG]\n –  Información en español\, más abajo.\n\n  \nThere is no doubt that the climate crisis makes the energy transition to renewable sources indispensable. The 2015 Paris Agreement was a historic milestone\, at least on paper\, in terms of reducing emissions and boosting renewable energy. But some issues have not been sufficiently resolved\, issues linked to the metals required for the “green” and digital technologies on which the energy transition is based. \nIn this context\, will it be possible to guarantee a sufficient and clean supply of the metals required for a green and digital Europe? What does the EU propose to achieve its strategic autonomy? What are the keys that will allow us to look to the future with optimism? \n  \nContext:\nThe climate crisis makes it necessary and urgent to replace fossil fuels with renewables\, but we must not forget one key issue: the “green” and digital technologies that will make this possible are based on non-renewable materials and require many more metals than fossil fuels\, metals that are finite and\, in many cases\, scarce. \nThe distribution and scarcity of rare metals is altering the global geopolitical order and the European Union will be no stranger to its consequences. In the 21st century\, the country that dominates their export and consumption is China\, which also has a monopoly on a group of metals known as rare earths. \nThe West’s dependence on China is not limited to raw materials\, but has extended to green and digital technologies\, which complicates a situation of which the European Union is fully aware. \n  \nSpeakers:\nHenrike Hahn is a German Member of the European Parliament since 2019. As speaker for industrial policy and member of the European Parliament’s Committee on Industry\, Research and Energy (ITRE)\, she has extensive knowledge of the industry sector. Ms Hahn is the Green Shadow rapporteur for the own initiative report “A European strategy for critical raw materials”. She is a member of the delegations for relations with China and the United States. For many years she worked as strategy consultant for technology-oriented companies in Paris and Munich. Henrike is passionate about greening the industry and the social-ecological transformation of the economy. \nGuillaume Pitron is a French journalist (Le Monde Diplomatique\, National Geographic\, etc.) and documentary maker. In 2018\, he published his first book\, “The Rare Metals War: The Dark Side Of the Energy Transition and Digitalization”. From Chinese rare earth metals\, oil extraction in Alaska\, to Sudanese gum arabic and khat trading in Djibouti\, he focuses his work on commodities and on the economic\, political and environmental issues associated with their use. He has authored around 100 reports\, investigations and documentaries across more than 40 countries In 2017 he won the Erik Izraelewicz Prize for best investigative report of the year\, awarded by the leading daily newspaper Le Monde\, and the award for Best Economic Book of the year in 2018. \nRichard Wouters is a researcher at Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks\, the think tank of the Dutch Greens. His main interests are the circular economy\, climate policy and technology. He’s leading the Green European Foundation’s project “Metals for a Green and Digital Europe”. Also for the Green European Foundation\, he wrote the “Charter for the Smart City.” \nThe session will be moderated by Cárol García\, who is a journalist and political scientist. DESCRIPTION:Be Brave Summer Festival\nIt will soon be almost two years since Young Greens have gathered in-real-life internationally. In August 2021 we plan to invite 300 Young Greens and representatives of youth Green movements to a 6-day long\, community-managed\, outdoor summer festival to: look back at the challenges and learnings of this period of digital organising\, as well as to undertake a journey of introspective reflection of our groups and movements to imagine a way forward for more inclusivity and resiliency. \nIMPORTANT NOTE: the final number of participants and number of festival days will be decided at a later stage and both figures might consequently be reduced to comply with national and EU restrictions. \n  \nAbout the location and logistical set-up\nIn organising the first ever Young Greens Summer Festival\, we firstly want to ensure the safety and inclusion of all participants. In his latest book The Good Ancestor\, philosopher Roman Krznaric develops this core point magnificently. He dives into history and the human mind to show that we can think and plan in the long-term. Specifically\, M.Soc.Sci Johanna Perkiö will present on social dividends as a potential form of basic income\, based on her 2020 report for Vasemmistofoorumi (The Left Forum).
