SUMMARY:Just Transition - The Good Ancestor
DESCRIPTION:About the event\n \nThe only way to move from an extractive economy to a regenerative one\, is through a just transition. This means making sure that we leave nobody behind. This also means embracing solidarity with future generations. Just Transition is about shifting our perspective from short-termism to considering the planet we leave to our descendants. In his latest book The Good Ancestor\, philosopher Roman Krznaric develops this core point magnificently. He dives into history and the human mind to show that we can think and plan in the long-term. How will the grandchildren of our grandchildren remember us? \nFortunately\, more and more time rebels – the people who are fighting for intergenerational justice – are putting this holistic plea on the agenda. Drawing on radical innovations from around the world\, Krznaric celebrates those who are reinventing democracy\, culture and economics so that we all have the chance to become good ancestors and create a better tomorrow. \nAfter the presentation\, the author will be joined by Philsan Osman\, student\, aspiring writer and community builder for a discussion on past\, present and future interdependence and solidarity. \nContext:\nJUST TRANSITION as transnational project aims to tackle the challenge of transforming from an extractive to a regenerative economy in a just and equitable way to find the necessary support among the population. It seeks to show that the green family\, including Green European Foundation in its specific role\, is a leading actor in the development of futureproof politics and policies\, developed in a sensitive way that keeps in mind local specificities. \nSpeakers:\nRoman Krznaric\, philosopher and author of The Good Ancestor \nProgramme:\n\n20:00 – 20:40 Book presentation\n20:40 – 21:00 Discussion\n21:00 – 21:30 Q&A\n\nPracticalities:\nPlease register via the following link. \nTo support the organisation of this webinar\, please consider a contribution on account number BE07 8901 5430 1466 (BIC: VDSP BE 91 – vdk bank). SUMMARY:Social Dividends as a Form of Basic Income
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nThe COVID-19 pandemic has more than ever provoked the debate around Universal Basic Income as a potential policy solution to a host of challenges. Yet just as there is a diversity of arguments in support of basic income\, there is a proliferation in models and pathways to implementation – each with its specific intricacies and consequences. \nThis one-hour webinar will explore some of these paths towards a basic income at the European level. Specifically\, M.Soc.Sci Johanna Perkiö will present on social dividends as a potential form of basic income\, based on her 2020 report for Vasemmistofoorumi (The Left Forum). Perkiö’s larger work has been on the history of discussions about UBI in Finnish society. \nAfter the presentation\, Lukas Korpelainen will comment on Perkiö’s findings and reflect further on the topic\, followed by audience questions. \nContext:\nAfter gathering comprehensive expertise and setting up transnational networks through a three-year long project on universal basic income\, GEF and its partners continue building on the outputs and successes of this work on the topic. \nThe transnational project ‘Change of Mindset – UBI\, Climate and Social Change’ seeks to spark a stronger civil society dialogue to bring about the change of mindset needed to raise acceptance of universal basic income among the public and to deepen the debate on our conceptions of productivity and work. Together\, we dive into the exploration of UBI as a tool of the urgently needed ecological transition and part of social security in a (post-)pandemic\, climate change world. \nSpeakers:\n\nJohanna Perkiö – project researcher at the University of Tampere and former chairperson of BIEN Finland \nComments by: Lukas Korpelainen – chairperson of the Finnish Greens’ social security working group and author of the GEF publication Basic Social Security 2030. \nPracticalities:\nThis webinar will take place in English\, and will be livestreamed to Facebook and YouTube. Participants can leave comments or questions via the chat. Register here to receive a reminder email.

SUMMARY:European Positions on Unconditional Basic Income II
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nAt a time when many people have lost their jobs and the economic outlook is uncertain\, an unconditional basic income (UBI) sounds tempting. In November\, with the support of FREDA and the Green Future Academy Austria\, GEF invited Barbara Prainsack to discuss her new book on an Unconditional Basic Income “Vom Wert des Menschen.” \nTo build further on that discussion\, we are inviting new perspectives to the table. Bishop Benno Elbs brings in the perspective of Christian social teaching\, Markus Koza brings in the trade union point of view\, and Barb Jacobson will provide a European perspective with her precise knowledge of the international discussion. \nTogether\, they will address key questions like: Is basic income a contemporary solution to our social and economic problems? Do national trials make sense or is European cooperation necessary? And can we even afford it? \nContext\nAfter gathering comprehensive expertise and setting up transnational networks through a three-year long project on universal basic income\, GEF and its partners continue building on the outputs and successes of this work on the topic. \nSpeakers\n\nBarbara Prainsack – Professor of Political Science\, University of Vienna\, author\nBenno Elbs – Bishop of the Diocese of Feldkirch\nBarb Jacobson – Welfare Advisor\, London\nMarkus Koza – green social speaker with union background\n\nModeration by Eva Häfele\, social scientist \nPracticalities:\nThis event will take place on Zoom and will be primarily in German\, with some English consecutive translation. Please register in advance via this link. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Green-Red Dialogues: For a Green and Social European Recovery Plan
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nThe economic impact of COVID-19\, on top of health and social dimensions\, has been particularly challenging for economies such as Spain\, with a dependent and weak industrial fabric\, and heavily dependent on foreign production. \nWe want to explore the European recovery fund as an opportunity to propose a new industrial model\, based on a true Green Deal that offers a powerful alternative to what we have today. A model that places ecology\, sustainability\, and the transition towards clean industries at the very centre of what is to be achieved\, while promoting social and territorial cohesion and encouraging greater cross-European solidarity. \nWe will approach this third dialogue from different perspectives\, learning first-hand what the proposals are from the trade union world from the voice of its top representative\, Javier Pacheco. We will also hear from German Green MEP Henrike Hahn on what is happening at the European level. Finally\, we get a local view from Laura Campos\, Mayor of Montcada i Reixac\, one of the territories where industry is the economic base of the municipality and therefore highly affected by this pandemic. \nWith them\, we will debate and make proposals to tackle a real transformation. \nContext:\nThis event is part of the Green Red Dialogues. The main purpose of this series of talks is to reflect on current issues from a green and social perspective. At a time when we have to face the global challenges as a result of COVID-19\, it is important to reflect on a green way out of the crisis. The current capitalist system has demonstrated that it promotes social inequality and that it attacks the planet\, and therefore\, all the inhabitants of the earth. We must urgently reverse the effects of the climate crisis and promote socially just and environmentally friendly models. We need to ensure that these proposals reach citizens\, and explain that it is compatible with the economy\, progress\, and development. \nThe first dialogue dealt with green responses to the health and climate crisis\, and the second explored Universal Basic Income as a possible solution in addressing our current COVID-19 crisis and others to come. \nSpeakers:\n\nJavier Pacheco – General Secretary of CCOO Catalonia\nHenrike Hahn – MEP Greens/EFA\, Committee on Industry\, Research\, and Energy\nLaura Campos – Mayor of Montcada i Reixac\n\nWelcome by: Susanne Rieger – co-president of the Green European Foundation \nModerator: Marc Rius \nPracticalities:\nDate: December 22nd (17:00 – 18:30 CET) \nThis event will take place in Spanish and English\, with simultaneous translation provided via Zoom. \nYou can register for and join the Zoom call directly via this link.

SUMMARY:Between Extractivism and Decolonization: The European Hunger for Resources
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nIn this event\, we invite everyone to join our conversation about natural resources\, extractivism and deep-sea mining. Our aim is both to inform and discuss with European and international citizens. \nContext:\nOpening up new mines is diametrically opposed to curbing our ecological greed and threatens mankind and the planet. Free trade leads to increased deforestation\, land grabbing and violations of human rights\, such as violence against indigenous communities. Deep-sea mining leads to ecological destruction in those few places on earth that have not yet been plundered by the growing economy. \nIf the EU focuses unilaterally on access to precious resources\, there is a threat that a colonial exploitation logic will continue. The alternative is a real just transition\, one that emphasizes on human rights and the provision of a good life for all within the boundaries of the planet. \n  \nSpeakers:\nWies Willems\, Broederlijk Delen \nAn Lambrechts\, Greenpeace Belgium \nSarah Vanden Eede\, WWF Belgium \nModerator: Dirk Holemans\, Oikos \n  \nProgramme:\nIntroduction by Wies Willems (20 min) \n– An Lambrechts and Sarah Vanden Eede will then dive deeper into deep-sea mining (30 min) \n– Q&A (30 min) \n  \nPracticalities:\nRegister your participation via info@oikos.be \nThis webinar will be held in Dutch. \nCall for Action: More info on our Facebook event and website \n—— \nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Oikos Think Tank and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Just Transition to Degrowth Society
DESCRIPTION:About the Event: \nThis webinar will offer space for debate among representatives of various organisations from the North and South and from both sides of Atlantic. They’ll discuss how just transition in Europe can be shaped through futureproof policies\, for the benefit of decent working conditions and the well being of all\, both in the EU and at global level. Join this webinar to learn more about Just Transition.  \n  \nContext: \nJUST TRANSITION as a transnational project aims to tackle the challenge of transforming from an extractive to a regenerative economy in a just and equitable way to find the necessary support among the population. It seeks to show that the green family\, including GEF in its specific role\, is a leading actor in the development of futureproof politics and policies\, developed in a sensitive way that keeps in mind local specificities.  Project partners are working together in conducting research on the Just Transition and drafting a paper on its different dimensions.   \nIn a world characterised by multi-level governance\, just transition initiatives are needed at the different levels: from companies and sectors\, over cities and regions\, to nations and the European Union. At all these levels\, specific challenges\, groups of stakeholders and power relations make clear that there is not a ‘one size fits all’ model of just transition. This also shows the need to document cases at the different levels\, in different regions.  \nWe are confronted now with both a crisis and employment emergency at the same time\, because millions of jobs are at risk. In order to achieve a carbon neutral Europe we have to be doing much more then we are doing at the moment. Climate policy has to be much more ambitious\, more investment in\, for example \,green and efficient energy is necessary. Just transition is about fair sharing of all the costs and burdens that come with this very ambitious transformation. Outcomes of this transitions should be (green) jobs that follow the pillars of decent work in a society that is carbon neutral and nobody is left behind\, while at the same time taking into consideration solidarity with other parts of the world and the future generations.  \n  \nSpeakers: \nMaruška Mileta\, FoE Croatia  \nOxana Lopatina\, independent researcher\, energy analyst\, Moscow  \nClara Dellaire Fortier\, doctoral candidate\, Lund University  \nMladen Domazet\, Institute for Political Ecology  \n  \nModerated by:  \nVedran Horvat\, Institute for Political Ecology  \n  \nProgramme:  \n17:00 – 17.10 Introduction: Vedran Horvat\, IPE  \n17:10 – 17.25 Maruška Mileta\, programme coordinator\, FoE Croatia  \n17:25 – 17:40 Oxana Lopatina\, energy analyst  \n17:40 – 17.55 Clara Dellaire Fortier\, doctoral candidate\, Lund University  \n17.55 – 18.10 Mladen Domazet\, Institute for Political Ecology \n18:10 – 18.30 Discussion  \n  \nPracticalities: \nWednesday\, 16th December\, 5:00 PM  \nThis is an online event\, please join via zoom link:  https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89384973759  \nEvent will take place in English.  \n  \n——\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Institute for Political Ecology and with the financial support of the European parliament to the Green European Foundation

SUMMARY:In Search of a Green City
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nWhat makes a city “green”? Planning\, Mobility\, Architecture\, Climate and Energy\, Waste\, \nGreen Spaces\, Biodiversity\, Food System … Initiatives and commitments are multiplying\, such as the Pact of Mayors for Energy and Climate\, the Milan Pact\, Circular Cities\, Cities Without Pesticides\, Green Cities Agreement\, Declaration of Glasgow\, among many others that can be voluntarily assumed by cities and municipalities to be more sustainable or ecological … \nDo these commitments reach the public? How do they articulate with Spatial Planning? Are they transparent to the citizen? How do you know that such commitments have an effect? \nIn this webinar\, the Green European Foundation and its partner Quercus will review some of these initiatives and discuss the ways that can safely take us towards greener cities. We will also go into two relatively recent approaches\, that of local food policies and action plans for the biodiversity. \nProgramme\n17:00 Welcome by Paula Lopes da Silva – Project Coordinator at Quercus \n17:30 Raúl Gómez – Director of Fundacíon Transicíon Verde and member of Green European Foundation \n18:00 Cecília Delgado – Architect\, researcher and coordinator of the Food Network Cities Sustainable \n18:30 Mário Carmo – Biologist\, Specialist in Action Plans and Biodiversity Conservation and Ecosystems \n19:00 pm Meet and Greet with speakers \nRegistration\nParticipants can register via this link: EM BUSCA DA CIDADE VERDE \nThe event will be in Portuguese and Spanish. \n—— \nThis event is organized by the Green European Foundation with the support of Quercus and with the support of the European Parliament’s financial contribution to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Don’t Just Look in the Mirror\, Look at the System
DESCRIPTION:Context:\nThe Just Transition project has as its aim to inspire and inform citizens about the implications of a just transition to a highly sustainable economy\, which involves more than technical measures. We need a new economic system that cares for people and the planet\, in which all costs and benefits are fairly distributed. How do we sustainably transform our labour market? How do we make sure the transition to renewables is inclusive and equitable? These are some of the questions we try to answer. \nAbout the Event:\nIn the last decades growing affluence has led to increased resource use and pollutant emissions. This puts a specific responsibility on the shoulder of affluent citizens. A global Just Transition is only possible if we say farewell to ecological gluttony. At the same time\, it would wrong to translate this insight in the first place into individual responsibility. Just as you can’t eat healthy in a candy shop\, our economies and cultures incite overconsumption and inhibit sustainable lifestyles. How to get rid of your car when there’s no good public transport\, why would you change your diet when governments promote eating meat? \nWithout denying individual responsibility\, the solution is found in collectives answers\, structural changes of life provisioning systems that enable a good life for all within planetary boundaries. \nSpeakers:\n– Julia Steinberger\, Professor of Societal Challenges of Climate Change at the University of Lausanne. She studies the relationships between the use of resources and performance of societies\, researching how human well-begin can be realized within planetary boundaries. She is a Lead Author of the IPCC report. \n– Jaap Tielbeke\, environmental editor of the Dutch progressive magazine De Groene Amsterdammer. He is also the author of the recent book ‘The Myth of the Green Consumer’ (in Dutch). \nPracticalities:\nRegister your participation by emailing at info@oikos.be \n—- \nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Oikos Think Tank and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Sun and Sand Tourism: Proposals for a Sustainable Future
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nFor over 50 years the coasts of the Mediterranean Sea have been under pressure from masses of people looking for Sun & Sand\, with a huge environmental impact on the coast and elsewhere through hidden destruction. \nFor the first time in decades popular tourist destinations have received respite during the travel season\, but at the expense of economic and social wellbeing of millions. So now what? This webinar will focus on how greening the sector can aid the recovery in these hard-hit areas. \nContext:\nThis event is part of the Fair and Carbon Free Tourism project. This project aims to identify and create conditions for collective action against detrimental social and environmental impacts of tourism. These impacts of tourism-induced economic activities are often underestimated\, and while social impacts are increasingly being considered in some of the tourist hubs of the project partners’ countries\, for instance in Barcelona\, Dubrovnik\, Salzburg\, or Ohrid\, environmental impacts in particular are often not (yet) addressed. \nSpeakers:\n\nSusanne Rieger – Co-chair of GEF\nSergi Alegre – Fundacio Nous Horitzons\nTilly Metz – MEP Greens/EFA\, Committee of Transport and Tourism\nEugenia Pascual – Initiative for Catalonia Greens Girona\nNeus Truyol – Councillor Mallorca city\, Equo\nVedran Horvat – Director of Institute for Political Ecology\, Croatia\n\nPracticalities:\nPlease check back later for a detailed programme. \nThis event will be taking place online. SUMMARY:What can cities and regions do to tackle climate change?
DESCRIPTION:Context:\nIn November\, GEF is launching the Green Academy with the support of Institute for Active Citizenship. \nThe Academy will offer those interested in enforcing climate and other green policies\, especially on the local and regional level\, the opportunity to learn more about respective topics and practical solutions\, discuss ideas and network across regions in Czechia. \nGEF will implement a series of regular\, maximum 90 minutes long\, online participatory workshops and webinars with content devoted to one particular topic for each session. \n3 dimensions of the topic will always be explored: the European\, national and local one. \n2 speakers will be invited to each of the workshops; presenting current developments in the topic at the European level (EP)\, explaining links to the Czech state politics and legislation and specific local projects that would serve as inspiration for specific activities at the local level. SUMMARY:Transformative pathways for tourism in post-pandemic Europe
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nThis webinar will offer space for debate among various academic and political organisations across Europe on the sustainability of tourism and the influences the COVID-19 pandemic has had on this sector. This will be an opportunity to share experiences and be inspired by the practices of others. Some of the research findings from the project will be presented but also expanded to a broader debate with engaged scholars and researchers. \nContext:\nThis event is part of the Green European Foundation’s Fair and Carbon Free Tourism transnational project. The project aims to identify and create conditions for collective action against the detrimental social and environmental impacts of tourism. In many countries\, tourism is a generator of GDP and fully employed in a growth-oriented consumerist economy. However\, there is an underestimated environmental and social impact of tourism. \nThe impacts of tourism-induced economic activities are often underestimated\, and while social impacts are increasingly being considered in some of the tourist hubs of the project partners’ countries\, for instance in Barcelona\, Dubrovnik\, Salzburg\, or Ohrid\, environmental impacts\, in particular\, are often not (yet) addressed. \nSpeakers:\n\nRobert Fletcher\, Waegeningen University\nFilka Sekulova\, University of Barcelona\nNikolina Rajković\, Institute for Political Ecology\nClaus Mersch\, FREDA (tbc)\n\nModerated by: Vedran Horvat\, Institute for Political Ecology \nProgramme: \n17:00 – 17.10 Introduction: Vedran Horvat\, IPE \n17:10 – 17.25 Robert Fletcher\, Waegeningen University \n17:25 – 17:40 Filka Sekulova\, University of Barcelona \n17:40 – 17.55 Nikolina Rajković\, Institute for Political Ecology \n17.55 – 18.10 Claus Mersch\, FREDA (tbc) \n18:10 – 18.30 Discussion \nPracticalities:\nMonday\, 7 December\, 17:00-18:30 \nThis is an online event\, please join us here via Zoom. \nThe event will take place in English. \n—- \nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of the Institute for Political Ecology and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation

SUMMARY:‘Gaming Europe’ Online transnational workshop
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nWith the “Gaming Europe” project looking at video games\, the Green European Foundation aims to engage its audience directly in workshops on the use of video games by European teenagers aged 12 to 14. Based on the results of these workshops\, we aim to assess with experts from both the education sector and the video games world whether video games can be used as a medium to address the topic of Europe in an engaging\, fun\, and non-patronising fashion for this target group and\, if the answer is yes\, develop a game concept. The ultimate\, long-term goal of the project is to transfer this game concept into a game accessible to youth across Europe. \nThis transnational workshop brings together national workshops’ participants with representatives from the video gaming world and non-profit organisations working on education on Europe. Based on the discussions and outcomes of their national sessions in Belgium and Portugal\, it aims to highlight key findings\, striving to harvest common lessons and ideas\, and brainstorm on video game ideas that render the EU more graspable to young Europeans (12 – 14 year olds). \nPracticalities\nThe language of the workshop is English and will be moderated by an external moderator. \nThis is a closed event. \nThe event is organised by the Green European Foundation\, with the financial support of the Bosch Alumni Network \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Towards a Fair and Low Carbon Tourism: Perspectives from Spain
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nTourism has positioned itself as one of the main engines of the Spanish economy\, but the current crisis of COVID-19 – as the economic crisis of 2008 did before – has shown the fragility of the sector and has called into question the high dependence of the GDP on this activity. The pandemic should serve as an opportunity to seek alternatives to make tourism resilient to new economic\, health and climate crises. \nTourism is also a sector that not only produces serious climatic and environmental impacts but these\, in turn\, affect it negatively. Water shortages\, reduced climatic comfort\, the loss of beaches or an increase in extreme weather events are some of the effects of global warming with direct consequences on tourism activity and which can seriously compromise its viability. \nWe should take advantage of the lessons learned during the pandemic to rethink a paradigm shift\, a shift towards a fair\, low-carbon tourism model that is prepared to face the major climate\, economic and social challenges of our time and that is sustainable in the long term. Are we prepared for this? \nContext:\nThis event is part of the Green European Foundation’s Fair and Carbon Free Tourism transnational project. This project aims to identify and create conditions for collective action against the detrimental social and environmental impacts of tourism. In many countries\, tourism is a generator of GDP and fully employed in a growth oriented consumerist economy. However\, there is an underestimated environmental and social impact of tourism. \nSpeakers: \n\nJavier Benayas: Professor of Ecology at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) and member of the Advisory Council of the Spanish Network for Sustainable Development. Town Planning and Sustainability Councilor in Soto del Real (Madrid).\nKarima Delli: French MEP from the Greens/EFA group. Chair of the Committee on Transport and Tourism. In 2016 she was appointed vice-chair of the Commission of Inquiry into the Measurement of Emissions from Cars (the so-called Dieselgate).\nAurora Pedro Bueno: Director of the New Green Transition Chair at the University of Valencia. Consultant for the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) since the mid-1990s and author of several publications on Tourism topics.\n\nModerator: Rosa M. Tristán\, environmental and scientific journalist with 30 years of professional experience in different media (El Mundo\, El HuffPost\, El País\, Público\, RNE\, …). \nPracticalities:\nThursday\, 3 December\, 18:00-19:30 \nThis is an online event\, please register in advance via this link. \nSimultaneous Spanish-English translation will be available. \n—- \nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Fundación Transición Verde and with the financial support of the European parliament to the Green European Foundation

SUMMARY:Just Transition: Futureproof policies for work
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nThe webinar will offer a space for debate among representatives of various organisations from both North and South on both sides of the Atlantic to discuss how just transition in Europe can be shaped through futureproof policies\, for the benefit of decent working conditions and well being of all\, both in the EU and at global level. Join this webinar to learn more about Just Transition. Project partners are working together in conducting research on the Just Transition and currently drafting a paper on its different dimensions. \nIn a world characterized by multi-level governance\, just transition initiatives are needed at different levels: from companies and sectors\, over cities and regions\, to nations and the European Union. At all these levels\, specific challenges\, groups of stakeholders and power relations make clear that there is not a ‘one fits all’ model of just transition. This also shows the need to document cases at different levels\, in different regions. \nThis webinar opens a series of three online events on JUST TRANSITION which will take place in November and December 2020. \nSpeakers:\n\nSean Sweney\, CUNY School of Labour and Urban Studies\nLiam McClelland\, Federation of Young European Greens\nAxelle van Wynsberghe\, DiEM 25\nLyda Fernanda\, Colombian economist\, ex-TNI staff member\n\nModerated by: Vedran Horvat\, Institute for Political Ecology \nProgramme: \n17:00 – 17.10 Introduction: Vedran Horvat\, IPE \n17:10 – 17.25 Sean Sweney\, CUNY School of Labour and Urban Studies \n17:25 – 17:40 Liam McClelland\, Federation of Young European Greens \n17:40 – 17.55 Lyda Fernanda\, Colombian economist\, ex-TNI staff member \n17.55 – 18.10 Axelle van Qynsberghe\, DiEM 25 \n18:10 – 18.30 Discussion \nPracticalities:\nMonday\, 30 November\, 17:00-18:30 \nThis is an online event\, please join via the zoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89384973759 \nLanguage: English will be the main language of the event \n—- \nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Institute for Political Ecology and with the financial support of the European parliament to the Green European Foundation

SUMMARY:How can we drastically reduce CO2 emissions in the EU and eradicate poverty?
DESCRIPTION:Context:\nThe Covid-19 crisis has only enhanced the social crises: decreasing wages\, increased inequalities and union busting. \nContrary to public belief\, the Covid-19 induced economic crisis is not an exogenous crisis to our economic system. Covid19 is a deeply endogenous crisis of our world capitalistic system. It has exposed the failures of underfinanced social and health systems that are the result of decades of austerity policies and privatisation. Zoonotic viruses that “jump” from animals to humans are increasing due to the destruction of the last areas of wilderness. Houses\, streets\, agricultural areas\, all are invading formerly untouched nature. \nOur current system exploits both: people and nature. Only a radical change in the human-nature metabolism can stop the ongoing climate catastrophe. Only a radical change in the social and economic policy can stop the wave of poverty we are facing. We thus need to solve both: the climate and the social crisis in one stroke. \nHence\, the climate crisis and the necessity to exist inside the planetary boundaries are the main challenge of the current generations. What is equally clear is that workers and common citizens must be in the centre of the necessary socio-ecological transformation. We have to build a much better economy now. \nWe need to act now\, and indeed: we have started to transform our economies. The European Commission has presented its Green Deal on 11th December 2019 and currently the EU is negotiating the historic ‘Recovery Plan’. The member states have also reacted to the immediate Covid19 induced economic crisis as well as to the long-term climate crisis. \nAbout the event:\nIn our common seminar\, we want to share our analysis of the Covid-19 and climate crisis and discuss possible solutions and propose alternative ways forward. We want to continue our dialogue on our understanding of the necessary socio-ecological transformation of our societies. \nSpeakers:\nSpeakers for the Green European Foundation (GEF): \n\nPolitical introduction: Aurélie Maréchal (Political Director GEF)\nSpeaker: Councillor Jonathan Essex (Green House Think Tank\, United Kingdom)\n\nSpeakers for the Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS): \n\nPolitical introduction: Uwe Optenhögel (Vice-President FEPS)\nSpeaker: Saïd El Khadraoui (Special Adviser FEPS\, Belgium)\n\nSpeakers for transform! europe: \n\nPolitical introduction: Cornelia Hildebrandt (Co-President transform! europe)\nSpeaker: Manuela Kropp (Project Manager Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung\, Brussels)\n\nThe event will be hosted by Marga Ferré (Co-President transform! europe) \nPracticalities:\nThe event will take place in English & French. \nRegistration Link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUsdOmtqz0uHtAcuu9R1CeAGwuUAd-3lgyx
