SUMMARY:In Search of a Green City
DESCRIPTION:Context:\nPart of the ‘Cities as Places of Hope’ series; a project launched in 2019 focussing on progressive city networks that are a key factor in the development of a positive narrative on the future of Europe. SUMMARY:Just Transition: Futureproof policies for work
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nThe webinar will offer a space for debate among representatives of various organisations from both North and South on both sides of the Atlantic to discuss how just transition in Europe can be shaped through futureproof policies\, for the benefit of decent working conditions and well being of all\, both in the EU and at global level. Join this webinar to learn more about Just Transition. \nContext:\nJUST TRANSITION as transnational project aims to tackle the challenge of transforming from an extractive to a regenerative economy in a just and equitable way to find the necessary support among the population. It seeks to show that the green family\, including Green European Foundation in its specific role\, is a leading actor in the development of futureproof politics and policies\, developed in a sensitive way that keeps in mind local specificities.  Project partners are working together in conducting research on the Just Transition and currently drafting a paper on its different dimensions. \nIn a world characterized by multi-level governance\, just transition initiatives are needed at different levels: from companies and sectors\, over cities and regions\, to nations and the European Union. SUMMARY:‘Gaming Europe’ National Workshop 2 (Brussels)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nWith the “Gaming Europe” project looking at video games\, the Green European Foundation aims to engage its audience directly in workshops on the use of video games by European teenagers aged 12 to 14. Based on the results of these workshops\, we aim to assess with experts from both the education sector and the video games world whether video games can be used as a medium to address the topic of Europe in an engaging\, fun\, and non-patronising fashion for this target group and\, if the answer is yes\, develop a game concept. The ultimate\, long-term goal of the project is to transfer this game concept into a game accessible to youth across Europe. \nThis national workshop’s main objective is to give the floor to young Belgians about their taste and habits in video games\, their interest and knowledge of the European Union\, learning to conceptualise the skeleton of a fun and interesting game with a video game developer around the theme of Europe and its values. SUMMARY:How can we drastically reduce CO2 emissions in the EU and eradicate poverty?
DESCRIPTION:Context:\nThe Covid-19 crisis has only enhanced the social crises: decreasing wages\, increased inequalities and union busting. \nContrary to public belief\, the Covid-19 induced economic crisis is not an exogenous crisis to our economic system. Covid19 is a deeply endogenous crisis of our world capitalistic system. It has exposed the failures of underfinanced social and health systems that are the result of decades of austerity policies and privatisation. Zoonotic viruses that “jump” from animals to humans are increasing due to the destruction of the last areas of wilderness. Houses\, streets\, agricultural areas\, all are invading formerly untouched nature. \nOur current system exploits both: people and nature. Only a radical change in the human-nature metabolism can stop the ongoing climate catastrophe. Only a radical change in the social and economic policy can stop the wave of poverty we are facing. We thus need to solve both: the climate and the social crisis in one stroke. \nHence\, the climate crisis and the necessity to exist inside the planetary boundaries are the main challenge of the current generations. What is equally clear is that workers and common citizens must be in the centre of the necessary socio-ecological transformation. We have to build a much better economy now. \nWe need to act now\, and indeed: we have started to transform our economies. The European Commission has presented its Green Deal on 11th December 2019 and currently the EU is negotiating the historic ‘Recovery Plan’. The member states have also reacted to the immediate Covid19 induced economic crisis as well as to the long-term climate crisis. \nAbout the event:\nIn our common seminar\, we want to share our analysis of the Covid-19 and climate crisis and discuss possible solutions and propose alternative ways forward. GEF and its partners are working to further explore and exchange on progressive cities and networks – documenting their successes and fostering connections. The project brings together partners from Spain\, Croatia\, Belgium\, North Macedonia and Turkey. This is a second event organised on the topic ‘Talking about a green city’ where GEF project partners\, municipality councillors\, green activists and city network representatives will have a chance to further discuss the city level responses and initiatives amid COVID-19 and develop case studies to be implemented in the local context. \nAbout the Event:\nThe ‘Talking about a green city’ event will bring together green local councillors from different municipalities and green activists from across North Macedonia from diverse green backgrounds. DESCRIPTION:CONTEXT\nWith the COVID-19 pandemic and particularly the economic recovery of this crisis dominating the public discourse\, as well as the postponement of COP26 in Glasgow by a year to November 2021\, the need to fight climate change has seemingly lost priority on the political agenda. Although the ongoing pandemic is closely linked to the destruction of our environment and biodiversity\, initial declarations by the UK government and others\, declaring 2020 as the “year of climate action” have clearly been downscaled which could have dramatic effects for our planet. \nThe following months will be crucial to ensure public awareness that urgent climate action is needed and that the recovery of our societies and economies must be a green recovery in all its aspects. \nThe Green European Foundation and the European Green Party are therefore organising “Greening COP26. DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThe challenges related to a sustainable transition of the European mobility sector were already manifold before the Covid-19 pandemic hit. Motorised mass transport has reached its limits\, mass tourism has massive ecological and social impacts\, and EU governments have not been acting fast enough to re-direct investments from a carbon-intensive transport sector to more climate-friendly means of transports\, e.g. trans-European railways. \nMeasures to contain the spread of the virus have brought international transport and travel to periods of a near standstill in 2020. In their attempt to prevent a collapse of entire industries and subsequent mass unemployment\, many governments had to bail out airline companies. At the same time\, huge investments to re-stabilise the current automobile and airline industry are counterproductive to the European Commission’s aim of ‘accelerating the shift to sustainable and smart mobility’ as part of the European Green Deal. \nWith their joint online event the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung European Union and the Green European Foundation would like to examine the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on European mobility. DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nThis international seminar will offer insight into the research conducted by 7 organizations across Europe on the sustainability of tourism and the influences the Corona pandemic had on this sector. DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nCouncils all over Europe are now using services to apply algorithms to public data in order to segment and “score” citizens and population groups according to their social group or “risk profile”. We will talk about citizen data scoring and what should be taken in consideration when building up a truly smart city. \nThis workshop focuses on the different aspects (social\, environmental\, economic\, democratic) of this topic with a specific lens on Central and Eastern Europe. Previously\, Dirk worked as a researcher and lecturer at various universities\, was a member of the Flemish Parliament and for 20 years a councillor in the Belgian city of Ghent. As a journalist and author\, he devoted more than 20 years to active environmentalism. He has published\, in Portugal and Spain\, a dozen books devoted to the dissemination and conservation of natural heritage. He is the founder and co-editor of the scientific journal LUCANUS\, Environment and Society\nMaría Sánchez has a degree in law and since 2011 she has been a councillor in the Valladolid City Council\, currently working in the area of the Environment and Sustainable Development. She is the spokesperson for the Valladolid Municipal Group Toma la Palabra. SUMMARY:Possibilities for Fair\, Sustainable and Carbon Free Tourism (Belgrade)
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nThe outbreak of the COVID-19 virus significantly affected the number of tourists and overnight stays in Serbia\, and tourism in Belgrade was particularly affected. The number of tourists in March 2020 in Belgrade decreased by 65.2% compared to March 2019\, while in April 2020 the number of tourists decreased by 98.8% compared to April 2019; in May 2020\, a reduced number of tourists was recorded compared to May 2019 with 95.7%. \nThe COVID-19 pandemic especially affected the number of foreign tourists who\, due to the closure of state borders and prevention measures\, did not come to Belgrade. After the mitigation of measures to fight the COVID-19 pandemic\, an increase in the number of domestic tourists was noted in Serbia\, but that recovery was limited in Belgrade\, which was the main focal point of the infected in Serbia. In June 2020\, the total number of tourists in Belgrade was 83.8% lower compared to June 2019\, this trend continued in July with 88.2% and in August with 85.8% less tourists compared to the same months during 2019. \nThe almost complete shut down and uncertainty that emerged in the tourism and hospitality sector at the global and European level\, as well as in Serbia and the city of Belgrade\, left room for reflection on how to make the tourism sector more fair\, sustainable and carbon neutral after the COVID-19 virus pandemic. \nContext:\nThis event is part of the Green European Foundation’s Fair and Carbon Free Tourism transnational project. SUMMARY:Transformation Towards Energy Democracy
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nIn this event we will underline the need for more democratic and inclusive society by addressing the state of democracy in the EU and candidate countries with the economic alternatives and the urgency of climate change. \nContext:\nThe Green European Foundation and Sunrise have in the previous three year period been pioneers on the topic of Energy Democracy in North Macedonia; with this 2020 event we will continue with the elaboration on the European experiences in the energy sector and stimulating positive changes in North Macedonia and the region. In this open Webinar we will discuss energy transformation and set a path to a participatory\, inclusive and decentralized green economy through promotion of the Energy Democracy concept. SUMMARY:Just Transition of the Economy
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nJoin us exploring the transition to an economy of the future. We will bring together speakers from the EU and the Western Balkans on the topic with their experiences and solutions to promote the importance of this transition all over Europe. \nWe have to rethink production and consumption from the perspective of a social circular economy. Only if the transformation is planned and executed in a just and equitable way\, it will find the timely and necessary support among the population. With this project we are researching the different dimensions of Just Transition and what are the politics and policies we should develop to make the change in our economic realities. \nContext:\nThis seminar is part of the Green European Foundation’s Just Transition transnational project. The project looks into the question of transforming from an extractive to a regenerative economy in a just and equitable way to find the necessary support among the population. SUMMARY:‘Gaming Europe’ National Workshop 1 (Lisbon)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nWith the “Gaming Europe” project looking at video games\, the Green European Foundation aims to engage its audience directly in workshops on the use of video games by European teenagers aged 12 to 14. Based on the results of these workshops\, we aim to assess with experts from both the education sector and the video games world whether video games can be used as a medium to address the topic of Europe in an engaging\, fun\, and non-patronising fashion for this target group and\, if the answer is yes\, develop a game concept. The ultimate\, long-term goal of the project is to transfer this game concept into a game accessible to youth across Europe. \nThis national workshop’s main objective is to give the floor to young Portuguese about their taste and habits in video games\, their interest and knowledge of the European Union\, learning to conceptualise the skeleton of a fun and interesting game with a video game developer around the theme of Europe and its values. Around the table\, we will have both young gamers aged 12-14\, but also nonprofit representatives working on education\, and video game designers. \nPracticalities\nThe language of the workshop is Portuguese and will be moderated by 4Change. \nThis is a closed event. \nThe event is organised in collaboration with 4Change\, with the financial support of the Bosch Alumni Network \n

SUMMARY:Inclusion and Citizens’ Rights
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nWhen building “digital cities\,” how do we ensure inclusivity of new spaces and opportunities? \nThis workshop focuses on the different aspects (social\, environmental\, economic\, democratic) of this topic with a specific lens on Central and Eastern Europe. We hope to empower participants to influence public debate and local decision-making on technological innovations and their implementation in the cities of the region. \nLearnings from this process will be used to create a manifesto on principles of new technologies’ implementation in Eastern European cities. \nContext:\nThis project is a part of the GEF transnational project “A Charter for the Smart City II”. \nAll over Europe\, so-called ‘smart cities’ are the testing grounds for new technologies that affect how we live\, how we organise our societies and what our ethical foundation is. Given the opportunities that new technologies offer for reducing the ecological footprint of cities and creating new urban commons\, as well as the potential threats they pose to civil liberties and social justice\, GEF aims to stimulate the debate on smart cities. To this end\, GEF has developed\, with the support of its partners\, a Charter for the Smart City\, consisting of guiding principles that will make it easier for green European politicians and activists to assess and steer technological innovations in their cities. Throughout 2019\, ideas were solicited digitally and through events across Europe\, including best practices from NGOs\, experts and local green politicians\, as well as from GEF partner foundations and other Green European actors. \nProgramme: \nSpeakers and programme to be announced shortly. \nPracticalities:\nThis event will be taking place online.
