SUMMARY:Greening COP26: an Online Hub for Climate
DESCRIPTION:CONTEXT\nWith the COVID-19 pandemic and particularly the economic recovery of this crisis dominating the public discourse\, as well as the postponement of COP26 in Glasgow by a year to November 2021\, the need to fight climate change has seemingly lost priority on the political agenda. Although the ongoing pandemic is closely linked to the destruction of our environment and biodiversity\, initial declarations by the UK government and others\, declaring 2020 as the “year of climate action” have clearly been downscaled which could have dramatic effects for our planet. \nThe following months will be crucial to ensure public awareness that urgent climate action is needed and that the recovery of our societies and economies must be a green recovery in all its aspects. \nThe Green European Foundation and the European Green Party are therefore organising “Greening COP26. An online hub for climate” to provide a space for the green ecosystem to keep up the momentum within the movement and to strengthen the connections that were already built – between green actors from different levels as well as between green actors and CSOs. \nPROGRAMME\nDay 1: Greening COP26 Kick off \nFriday\, 20 November\, 14-17h CET \nThe first day of the online Green Climate Hub will be held on the day that would have been the original last day of COP26 with a concluding statement/agreement from governments. We will hence use the day to kick off this virtual hub for the green movement to come together and work towards Greening COP26. What are the priorities we will be setting? What do we expect as outcomes of COP26 and what do we realistically expect to happen? \n\n14h00-14h30 Opening of the Climate Hub \n\nDirk Holemans\, GEF Co-President\, and Thomas Waitz\, EGP Co-Chair and Member of European Parliament \n\n14h30-17h00 Introduction to the hub functionalities and networking\n\n  \nDay 2: The Struggle for Climate Equality \nFriday\, 27 November\, 10-13h CET \nAlthough driven by natural and physical systems that are changing our planet\, it is also clear that climate change will bring with it impacts on our social and economic systems as well as exacerbate already existing inequalities. In particular\, the gap between the global North and South and the increased negative impacts already being felt by indigenous communities\, women and people of color must be addressed. Existing problems\, like migration\, conflict and wealth inequality will be worsened by the impacts of climate change. Our global private and public finance systems are driving the climate crisis and investing our money in the wrong future.  \nHow can these problems be addressed? What do we need to consider in our fight for a sustainable and equitable future? How can or will the international climate discussions reflect these issues? \n\n10h00-11h00 Environmental (im)mobility: This workshop will explore the detrimental impacts of climate change and environmental degradation on the movement of people and will discuss different notions of climate migration with Dr Caroline Zickgraf\, Deputy Director of the HUGO Observatory for Environment\, Migration and Politics.\n11h00-12h00 The struggle for Amazonas: We are proud to feature a workshop by the Fridays For Future international youth team SOS Amazonia. In this workshop activists from the Fridays For Future movement give an overview of the situation in the Amazon\, the effects the EU-Mercosur free trade agreement would have on it and the solutions that scientists propose to save this crucial ecosystem\n\nDay 3: 5 years after Paris – Walking the Talk? \nFriday\, 11 December\, as of 11h CET \nSo what is next for us? Marking the 5th anniversary of the Paris Agreement (on the 12th December 2020)\, and at the same time in the expectation that the European Council (on the 11th December) will make its final decision on the EU climate law\, this day marks an important milestone of progress for global and European climate action thus far. \nBut we know that there is still much work left and time is running out. The impacts of climate change are already being felt\, and as we continue to battle the corona crisis\, it is more important than ever that we look towards building the sustainable and just future we want to see. Youth movements and activists have not only been leading the push for action now\, but as the generation that will bear the brunt of the climate crisis\, their vision of the future is more important than ever. We can build on the best practices\, innovations\, and visions that are already being fought for around the world. Greens\, civil society\, activists and others must come together to shape a better tomorrow. \n\n11h00-12h00 Networking\n12h00-13h30 Panel discussion: Five years after Paris – what’s next?\n\nSpeakers: Francois Gemenne\, Timothée Parrique\, Leonore Gewessler\, Mina Tolu\, Molly Scott Cato \nModeration: Lisa Tostado\, hbs EU Head of International Climate\, Energy and Agricultural Policy) \n\nAs of 14h00: sessions organised with MOCK COP and Glasgow Agreement\n\n  \nThe hub will be hosted on GEF’s SpotMe platform. SUMMARY:Just Transition - Let No One Be Left Behind
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nThe overflow of natural systems\, the extremely rapid loss of global biodiversity or the impacts of climate change are not only a threat to some ecosystems\, but to the global balance of the planet and\, therefore\, to ourselves as a species. Faced with this challenge\, we cannot dissociate the search for natural balance from issues such as the future of employment or inequality which\, while necessary to try to ensure that the necessary transition is fair\, will require a broad social dialogue\, as is already happening\, for example\, with coal mining basins. \nIn order to approach questions on a just transition\, the Green European Foundation and Green Transition together with La Casa Encendidais bringing you thus webinar featuring Laura Martín Murillo\, director of the Institute for the Just Transition (Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge)\, and Joaquín Nieto\, director of the International Labour Organization in Spain; in which we will be able to learn about the current situation\, the future perspectives and the most urgent issues both nationally and internationally in relation to the just transition. The moderation will be led by political analyst Cristina Monge and we will be welcomed by Dirk Holemans\, Co-President of the Green European Foundation. \nContext:\nThis webinar is part of the Green European Foundation’s Just Transition transnational project. The project looks into the question of transforming from an extractive to a regenerative economy in a just and equitable way to find the necessary support among the population. It seeks to show that the green family\, including GEF in its specific role\, is a leading actor in the development of future-proof politics and policies\, developed in a sensitive way that keeps in mind local specificities. \nSpeakers:\n\nDirk Holemans\, Co-President\, Green European Foundation\nJoaquín Nieto\, Director of ILO (International Labour Organization) in Spain\nLaura Martín Murillo\, Director of the Just Transition Institute (Ministry for Ecological Transition)\n\nModerator: Cristina Monge\, Political scientist\, professor at the University of Zaragoza \nPracticalities:\nWhen: 19th November 2020 18:30 – 20:00 CET \nLanguage: Spanish (simultaneous translation to English) \nRegister: https://transicionverde.es/encuentro-online-como-podemos-hacer-una-transicion-justa/ \n—- \nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Transición Verde and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation

SUMMARY:European Mobility in the context of Covid-19: Keeping the green steering wheel steady?
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThe challenges related to a sustainable transition of the European mobility sector were already manifold before the Covid-19 pandemic hit. Motorised mass transport has reached its limits\, mass tourism has massive ecological and social impacts\, and EU governments have not been acting fast enough to re-direct investments from a carbon-intensive transport sector to more climate-friendly means of transports\, e.g. trans-European railways. \nMeasures to contain the spread of the virus have brought international transport and travel to periods of a near standstill in 2020. In their attempt to prevent a collapse of entire industries and subsequent mass unemployment\, many governments had to bail out airline companies. At the same time\, huge investments to re-stabilise the current automobile and airline industry are counterproductive to the European Commission’s aim of ‘accelerating the shift to sustainable and smart mobility’ as part of the European Green Deal. \nWith their joint online event the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung European Union and the Green European Foundation would like to examine the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on European mobility. How can the EU ensure uninterrupted transport and supply chains\, e.g. for medical equipment? What will be the opportunities and challenges of a progressing digitisation of European transport? How will the pandemic shape the future of free movement within the EU? What should international tourism look like in a post-Covid-19 world? How can a just transition of the mobility sector contribute to ambitious climate targets? \nSpeakers:\nGeorges Gilkinet\, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Mobility and the National Railway Company\, Belgian Federal Government \nMatthew Baldwin\, Deputy Director-General\, Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport (DG MOVE)\, European Commission \nAnnika Degen\, Director of EU Office Verband deutscher Verkehrsunternehmen (VDV) \nModerator: Martin Keim\, Head of Programme – European Energy Transition\, Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung European Union \n——- \nThe event will be live-streamed on Facebook and YouTube.

SUMMARY:European Positions on Unconditional Basic Income
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nBarbara Prainsack’s new book on an Unconditional Basic Income “Vom Wert des Menschen” has received a lot of attention in recent weeks. At a time when many people have lost their jobs and the economic outlook is uncertain\, an unconditional basic income (UBI) sounds tempting. The Green European Foundation\, with the support of its Austria partner FREDA\, has invited Barbara Prainsack to discuss her thoughts and basic theses with us. \nIn order to delve even deeper into the topic\, we want to bring further perspectives to the table: Sabine Jungwirth (Federal Spokesperson Green Economy) brings her economic expertise and Barbara Huemer (Green Spokesperson for Women\, Work\, Employment\, Human Resources\, Science\, Research & Development) shares her experiences. \nEuropean perspectives will be provided by Antje Schrupp from Germany\, who has been dealing with the feminist aspects of a UBI for years\, and by Francois Denuit\, researcher and staff member of the European Parliament with a focus on an EU-wide UBI. \nContext:\nAfter gathering comprehensive expertise and setting up transnational networks through a three-year long project on universal basic income\, GEF and its partners continue building on the outputs and successes of this work on the topic. \nThe transnational project ‘Change of Mindset – UBI\, Climate and Social Change’ seeks to spark a stronger civil society dialogue to bring about the change of mindset needed to raise acceptance of universal basic income among the public and to deepen the debate on our conceptions of productivity and work. Together\, we dive \ninto the exploration of UBI as a tool of the urgently needed ecological transition and part of social security in a (post-)pandemic\, climate change world. \nSpeakers:\n\nBarbara Prainsack – author of “Vom Wert des Menschen” (Austria)\nSabine Jungwirth – Federal Spokesperson Green Economy (Austria)\nBarbara Huemer – Green Spokesperson for Women\, Work\, Employment\, Human Resources\, Science\, Research & Development (Austria)\nAntje Schrupp – journalist and political scientist (Germany)\nFrancois Denuit – researcher and staff member at the European Parliament (Belgium)\n\nModeration by Carlotta Weber (Strategy Manager at the Green European Foundation) \nProgramme:\n19:00 – 19:10 Onboarding & Welcome (00:10) \n19:10 – 19:20 Reading/Presentation by Barbara Prainsack (00:10) \n19:20 – 20:10 Panel discussion \n20:10 – 20:20 Input by Francois Denuit \n20:20 – 20:30 Panel discussion \n20:30 – 20:45 Audience Q&A (optional) \nPracticalities:\nThis event will take place primarily in German. \nThe event will be streamed live on YouTube\, please tune in here.

SUMMARY:Exploring Fair and Carbon Free Tourism
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nThis international seminar will offer insight into the research conducted by 7 organizations across Europe on the sustainability of tourism and the influences the Corona pandemic had on this sector. This will be an opportunity to share experiences and be inspired by the practices of others. \nThe impacts of tourism-induced economic activities are often underestimated\, and while social impacts are increasingly being considered in some of the tourist hubs of the project partners’ countries\, for instance in Barcelona\, Dubrovnik\, Salzburg\, or Ohrid\, environmental impacts in particular are often not (yet) addressed. \nContext:\nThis event is part of the Green European Foundation’s Fair and Carbon Free Tourism transnational project. This project aims to identify and create conditions for collective action against the detrimental social and environmental impacts of tourism. In many countries\, tourism is a generator of GDP and fully employed in a growth oriented consumerist economy. However\, there is an underestimated environmental and social impact of tourism. \nSpeakers:\n\nMaja Morachanin\, MP and Leader of the Macedonian Green Party (DOM)\nAleksandar Gjorgjievski\, ASSED Sunrise – North Macedonia\nVedran Horvat\, Institute for Political Ecology – Croatia\nSergi Alegre\, Fundacio Nous Horizons\, Barcelona – Spain\nZaklina Zivkovic\, Networked – Serbia\nClaus Mersch\, FREDA – Austria\nAna Petrovska\, ASSED Sunrise – North Macedonia\n\nProgramme: \n11:00 – 11:10      Introduction of the event and participants; opening remarks by Maja Morachanin \n11:10 – 11:25       Vedran Horvat – Project Leader of the GEF “Fair and Carbon Free Tourism” – IPE Croatia \n11:25 – 11:35      Sergi Alegre – Sand and Sun Tourism in Catalonia: An Overview \n11:35 – 11:45      Zaklina Zivkovic – Serbian Tourism Overview \n11:45 – 11:55      Claus Mersch – Austrian Tourism Overview \n11:55 – 12:05     Ana Petrovska – Responsible Tourism in Ohrid \n12:05 – 12:30    Discussion and conclusions \nPracticalities:\nThis online event is open to the general public. SUMMARY:Smart Cities and Citizen Science
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nThis international webinar will offer local government representatives\, politicians\, municipal officials\, as well as academic experts and practitioners from Czech and Slovak cities the opportunity to share their experiences and be inspired by the practices of other cities. \nWe will discuss how to strengthen the environmental qualities of cities through citizens’ participation. For example\, through presenting various examples of using citizens as motivated amateur scientists\, equipping them with modern technologies for direct data collection. \nContext:\nThis project is a part of the GEF transnational project “A Charter for the Smart City II”. \nAll over Europe\, so-called ‘smart cities’ are the testing grounds for new technologies that affect how we live\, how we organise our societies and what our ethical foundation is. Given the opportunities that new technologies offer for reducing the ecological footprint of cities and creating new urban commons\, but also the potential threats they pose to civil liberties and social justice\, GEF aims to stimulate the debate on smart cities. \nTo this end\, GEF has developed\, with the support of its partners\, a Charter for the Smart City\, consisting of guiding principles that will make it easier for green European politicians and activists to assess and steer technological innovations in their cities. Throughout 2019\, ideas were solicited digitally and through events across Europe\, including best practices from NGOs\, experts\, and local green politicians\, as well as from GEF partner foundations and other Green European actors. These resulted in the published Charter for the Smart City. \nSpeakers:\n\nRichard Wouters (Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks\, Utrecht) – author of “A Charter for the Smart City” will show how modern technologies often present us with new dilemmas and how to approach them in order to strengthen the fundamental values of a democratic society.\nAlena Bartoňová (Norwegian Institute for Air Research\, Oslo) – Director of Air Quality Research in Oslo\, Norway\, will highlight concrete examples from European cities of how easier access to monitoring technologies increases people’s interest in the cleanliness of the air they breathe and enables research institutions and municipalities to involve the general public in tackling air pollution.\nThomas van Oppens (City Councilor\, Leuven) – the city councilor of the Belgian city of Leuven will present inspiring examples of the use of “citizen science” for independent traffic monitoring. You will learn how the city uses this data.\nDana Mareková (lawyer\, civic activist\, Bratislava) – combines law and environmental campaigns and shares her experience from Slovakia regarding the Bratislava air quality measurements carried out before the international Clean Air Forum 2019. She will explain what the situation looked like\, what they were trying to achieve\, how city and state representatives reacted\, and lessons for the future from such campaigns.\nMichal Šindelář (Partnership Foundation\, Brno) – an expert on bicycle transport will reveal how the data collected by city cyclists can be used by local governments to create better conditions for cycling.\n\nProgramme: \n9:00-9:05 Welcome \n9:05-9:15 Richard Wouters (NL) \n9:15-9:35 Alena Bartoňová (NOR) \n9:35-9:50 Thomas Van Oppens (BE) \n9:50-10:05 Dana Mareková (SK) \n10:05-10:20 Michal Šindelář (CZ) \n10:20-10:30 Discussion and conclusions. \nPracticalities:\nThe conference will take place via videoconferencing platform Zoom in Slovak\, Czech and English. Simultaneous English-Slovak interpretation will be provided \nParticipation in the online conference is free\, only electronic registration is required here: https://forms.gle/7CNYS8krsHGToAEs5 \n—— \nThis conference is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Institute for Active Citizenship and Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks with the financial support of the European parliament to the Green European Foundation

SUMMARY:Citizen Scoring
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nCouncils all over Europe are now using services to apply algorithms to public data in order to segment and “score” citizens and population groups according to their social group or “risk profile”. We will talk about citizen data scoring and what should be taken in consideration when building up a truly smart city. \nThis workshop focuses on the different aspects (social\, environmental\, economic\, democratic) of this topic with a specific lens on Central and Eastern Europe. We hope to empower participants to influence public debate and local decision-making on technological innovations and their implementation in the cities of the region. \nLearnings from this process will be used to create a manifesto on principles of new technologies’ implementation in Eastern European cities. \nContext:\nThis project is a part of the GEF transnational project “A Charter for the Smart City II”. \nAll over Europe\, so-called ‘smart cities’ are the testing grounds for new technologies that affect how we live\, how we organise our societies and what our ethical foundation is. Given the opportunities that new technologies offer for reducing the ecological footprint of cities and creating new urban commons\, as well as the potential threats they pose to civil liberties and social justice\, GEF aims to stimulate the debate on smart cities. To this end\, GEF has developed\, with the support of its partners\, a Charter for the Smart City\, consisting of guiding principles that will make it easier for green European politicians and activists to assess and steer technological innovations in their cities. Throughout 2019\, ideas were solicited digitally and through events across Europe\, including best practices from NGOs\, experts and local green politicians\, as well as from GEF partner foundations and other Green European actors. \nSpeakers: \nMichiel Filippart – Regional councilor for GroenLinks in the Netherlands and an adviser to the GroenLinks group in the Dutch senate. A contributor to the Charter for the Smart City; he will talk about Citizen Scoring and the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in it. \nJulian Hauser – PhD student in philosophy of mind and cognitive science at the University of Edinburgh. He researches the self and how it is changed by modern digital technologies\, focusing in particular on the constitution of its boundaries. He will talk about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its ethical aspects. \nPracticalities:\nThis event will be streamed live on Facebook and YouTube. \nYou can listen to our podcast now at https://soundcloud.com/user-881417568/smart-cities \nLanguage: The main language of this event will be English. \nAcknowledgements: \nThis project is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of CDNEE and Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Possibilities for Fair\, Sustainable and Carbon Free Tourism (Belgrade)
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nThe outbreak of the COVID-19 virus significantly affected the number of tourists and overnight stays in Serbia\, and tourism in Belgrade was particularly affected. The number of tourists in March 2020 in Belgrade decreased by 65.2% compared to March 2019\, while in April 2020 the number of tourists decreased by 98.8% compared to April 2019; in May 2020\, a reduced number of tourists was recorded compared to May 2019 with 95.7%. \nThe COVID-19 pandemic especially affected the number of foreign tourists who\, due to the closure of state borders and prevention measures\, did not come to Belgrade. After the mitigation of measures to fight the COVID-19 pandemic\, an increase in the number of domestic tourists was noted in Serbia\, but that recovery was limited in Belgrade\, which was the main focal point of the infected in Serbia. In June 2020\, the total number of tourists in Belgrade was 83.8% lower compared to June 2019\, this trend continued in July with 88.2% and in August with 85.8% less tourists compared to the same months during 2019. \nThe almost complete shut down and uncertainty that emerged in the tourism and hospitality sector at the global and European level\, as well as in Serbia and the city of Belgrade\, left room for reflection on how to make the tourism sector more fair\, sustainable and carbon neutral after the COVID-19 virus pandemic. \nProgramme:\n\n18:00-18:10 Introduction\n\nPredrag Momčilović – Platform for Theory and Practice Zajedničko \n\n18:10-18:20 The project and the situation in Croatia\n\nNikolina Rajković – Institute for Political Ecology \n\n18:20-18:30 Presentation of research report about Fair and carbon free tourism in Belgrade\n\nNikoleta Petković and Elene Petrovska – Zajedničko \n\n18:30-20:00 Panel debate about possibilities for fair\, sustainable and carbon free tourism in Belgrade\n\nNatalija Stojmenović – Don’t Let Belgrade D(r)own \nMiloš Baković Jadžić –Party of the Radical Left \nVladimir Pajić – Movement of Free Citizens \nModeration: Predrag Momčilović – Zajedničko \nPracticalities:\nWhen: Wednesday\, 4th November (18:00 – 20:00 CET) \nWhere: Cultural center Grad\, Braće Krsmanović 4\, Belgrade \nA live stream will also be provided via this link. \nThis event will be primarily in Serbian. SUMMARY:‘Gaming Europe’ National Workshop 1 (Lisbon)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nWith the “Gaming Europe” project looking at video games\, the Green European Foundation aims to engage its audience directly in workshops on the use of video games by European teenagers aged 12 to 14. Based on the results of these workshops\, we aim to assess with experts from both the education sector and the video games world whether video games can be used as a medium to address the topic of Europe in an engaging\, fun\, and non-patronising fashion for this target group and\, if the answer is yes\, develop a game concept. The ultimate\, long-term goal of the project is to transfer this game concept into a game accessible to youth across Europe. \nThis national workshop’s main objective is to give the floor to young Portuguese about their taste and habits in video games\, their interest and knowledge of the European Union\, learning to conceptualise the skeleton of a fun and interesting game with a video game developer around the theme of Europe and its values. Around the table\, we will have both young gamers aged 12-14\, but also nonprofit representatives working on education\, and video game designers. \nPracticalities\nThe language of the workshop is Portuguese and will be moderated by 4Change. \nThis is a closed event. \nThe event is organised in collaboration with 4Change\, with the financial support of the Bosch Alumni Network \n

SUMMARY:Inclusion and Citizens’ Rights
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nWhen building “digital cities\,” how do we ensure inclusivity of new spaces and opportunities? \nProgramme: \nSpeakers and programme to be announced shortly. \nPracticalities:\nThis event will be taking place online. Please register in advance via this link. \nYou can listen to our podcast now at https://soundcloud.com/user-881417568/smart-cities \nLanguage: The main language of this event will be English. \nThis project is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of CDNEE and Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Cities as Places of Hope Roundtable II
DESCRIPTION:Context:\nPart of the ‘Cities as Places of Hope’ series; a project launched in 2019 focussing on progressive city networks that are a key factor in the development for a positive narrative on the future of Europe. The GEF-19-01 Cities as Places of Hope project is carried out simultaneously in Belgium\, Croatia\, Spain\, North Macedonia and Turkey. \nAbout the Event:\nOur roundtable aims to increase the dialogue between the actors in the city with each other and to develop a supportive\, effective follow-up and participatory mechanism (network) for sustainable and green city planning. \nThe pandemic has had a massive impact on life in cities; during the lockdowns all around the world\, we have once again been shown importance of liveable cities. \nIn this process\, green areas that are accessible\, comfortable and planned for everyone; cities accessible by bicycle and on foot; comfortable\, climate-friendly and clean public transportation vehicles\, city management demonstrating the existence of social support and solidarity opportunities became prominent needs for green cities. \nIn many cities\, even if some of these opportunities are provided\, they cannot be placed in a governance plan within a sustainable and standard framework. Therefore\, in this event\, we will evaluate the indicator standards for green cities and the capacities of city administrations with experts. \nParticipants:\nIMM Istanbul Planning Agency\, Vision 2050 and Institute Istanbul\, Istanbul Statistics Office\, IMM Urban Planning Department\, IMM Parks and Gardens Directorate\, IMM Directorate of Transportation\, IMM Department of Environment \nThe Foresters’ Association of Turkey\, Streets Belong to Us Association\, Center for Spatial Justice\, Right to Clean Air Platform\, Istanbul City Council Working Group on Climate and Environment\, Sustainable Cities Network\, 350.org Turkey \nProgramme: \n\nFirst session\n\nLand Use\, Sea and beach use\, Water Management\, Human Settlement\, Transportation\, Energy.\nNetworking and collaboration.\n\n\nSecond session\n\nJobs within green municipalism\n\n\nThird session\n\nIstanbul and its green visibility\n\n\n\nPracticalities:\nThis is a closed event \nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of The Green Thought Association and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:The impacts of Covid-19 on the Western Balkans and the region’s political future
DESCRIPTION:Context:\nThe COVID-19 pandemic not only hit the Western Balkan countries in a period of reacceleration of economic activity and put enormous pressure on the already fragile health systems in place\, but also had a negative impact on the state of democracy in the region. In response to the outbreak of the virus\, some governments relapsed into authoritarian tendencies increasing censorships and restricting the free flow of information. Cases of arbitrary arrest\, surveillance\, phone tapping\, privacy breaches and other digital rights violations during imposed emergency legislation have become an increasing concern. \nFurthermore\, many experts suggest that the crisis has seriously hampered the EU’s influence in the region. Even though it finally mobilised a financial package amounting to 3.3 billion Euro to fight Covid-19 and its impact in the Western Balkans\, the EU’s image in those countries deteriorated due to the initial lack of solidarity and hesitant response towards its neighbours in South-East Europe. Other global players such as China and Russia have been fast in offering assistance and investment to increase their own influence in the region. Often\, their economic support goes hand in hand with campaigns to foster alternative narratives and populist sentiments. \nHence\, with their joint online event\, the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung European Union and the Green European Foundation would like to address with the invited panellists what the latest developments amidst this crisis mean for the Western Balkans societies and what the implications for the region’s political future might be. What are the major impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on the Western Balkans? How have the governments in the region handled the crisis so far? And\, is it necessary for the EU to change its approach to the Western Balkans as reluctant and desultory commitments in the accession process are wearing out the EU’s good image in the region? \nSpeakers:\n\nLejla Gačanica\, Independent legal counsel and researcher\, Bosnia and Herzegovina\nLiljana Popovska\, former MP in the Macedonian Parliament and leader of Democratic Renewal of Macedonia (DOM)\, board member of the Green Institute\, North Macedonia\nAndrej Petrovski\, Director of Tech/CERT at SHARE Foundation\, Serbia\n\nModerator: \nSimon Ilse\, Office Director\, Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung Serbia\, Montenegro & Kosovo \n——- \nThe event will be live-streamed on Facebook and YouTube.

SUMMARY:Ecopolis – Again(st) Nature (Brussels\, Belgium)
DESCRIPTION:About Ecopolis: \nAnno 2020. Nature is on fire\, from Australia to the Ardennes. Forests are felled\, no more insects on the windshield\, concrete everywhere\, a million species are in danger of extinction. A virus turns the world upside down. The exploitation of nature is threatening our existence. Vulnerable groups here and in the South are facing even harder times. \nHow much longer do we saw off the very branch that supports us? Or do we change course? \nEcopolis 2020 puts the finger on the pulse and looks ahead. What are the post-corona challenges? How do we feel part of nature again? How do we restore the balance? How does this support a vigorous climate and nature policy? Which transitions are necessary ― urban\, agricultural\, etc. ― for a society that respects people and nature? And gives everyone prospect of a good life. \nEcopolis 2020 is moving online\, follow the event at home via livestream. \nDue to the recent increase of coronavirus infections\, we have had to take a difficult decision. This year’s edition will have no live audience\, and will move entirely online. We will build a cosy studio on the Kaaitheater stage and stream the lectures and conversations directly to your living room\, with opportunities for online interaction. \nSpeakers:\n\nJan Rotmans\, Urgenda\nWarda El-Kaddouri\, De Groene Amsterdammer\nYousra Benfquih\, University of Antwerp\nHans Van Dyck\, UCLouvain\nTom Bauler\, Université Libre de Bruxelles\nHendrik Schoukens\, Ghent University\nAnuna De Wever\, climate activist\nEva Meijer\, Wageningen University\nMyriam Dumortier\, Ghent University\n\nAnd many more names to be announced! \nProgramme: \n11:00 – 12:30 | Corona lessons for a resilient society \nThe corona crisis has taught us that you cannot just cut down forests or deal carelessly with animals endlessly. Outsourcing all production to low-wage countries is also no longer an option. How do we build resilient societies that are ecologically and socially durable? \nA panel discussion with Myriam Dumortier (bio engineer and senior researcher at INBO)\, Koen Vannmechelen (contemporary conceptual artist)\, Jan Rotmans (transition thinker) and Christine Van Acker (writer). \n12:30 – 14:00 | Meet the animal \nFor centuries we have been intrigued by animals and have used them in our stories. Who does not know Reynard the Fox? Only recently have we learned how small the differences between humans and animals are. What does an understanding relationship with animals with recognition of their own abilities mean? \nA conversation that explores new paths with: Eva Meijer (writer\, philosopher and artist)\, Hans Van Dyck (professor Behavioral Biology)\, Hendrik Schoukens (environmental lawyer)\, Lisa Tostado (Heinrich Böllstiftung\, which recently released the Insect Atlas). \n14:00 – 15:30 | Transition to a fair agro-ecology \nAgricultural soils are eroding\, biodiversity is declining alarmingly. Fortunately\, we see new agro-ecological farmers emerge. Through short-chain they restore contact with consumers while also taking care of the surrounding nature. The challenge is to make these innovative practices the new normal. \nA conversation with Yousra Benfquih (lawyer\, poet and columnist)\, Louis De Jaeger (landscape architect) and others. \n15:30 – 17:00 | Cities full of nature and the barren countryside \nIt is at odds with what we think: the city is full of nature and agricultural areas are increasingly turning into deserts. But there is work to be done everywhere. For example\, green space in the city is unevenly distributed and there is a need for a different vision of open space with reinforced village centers. \nWith Paul Demets (poet)\, Els Vervloesem (transition architect) and Tom Bauler (ecological economist). \n17:00 – 18:00 | Final debate \nThe starting point is the question posed by the French thinker Bruno Latour: Where can we land? How can we “ground ourselves” and take care of our living environment\, while being open to the world? \nWith Warda El-Kaddouri (researcher and journalist)\, Anuna De Wever (climate activist)\, Olivier de Schutter (UN special rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights) and Dirk Holemans (coordinator of Oikos – Think tank for socio-ecological change). \n  \nLabiomista\, Genk \nIn 2019 artist Koen Vanmechelen launched LABIOMISTA\, an evolving work of art situated on the foundations of a former zoo in Genk (BE). \nVanmechelen is one of the most versatile thinkers of these times. He works at the confluence of art\, science\, philosophy and community. LABIOMISTA is the embodiment of his artistic and philosophical vision. It is based on the belief in art as a driver of mutual understanding and as a guide in the search for answers to the major challenges of the 21st century\, the relationship between nature and culture and in particular the development of sustainable communities. \nThe 24-hectare park is a permanent and evolving work of art\, a garden of order and chaos\, an arena of culture and nature. It invites\, challenges and inspires. It is a hotbed for a wealth of new ideas\, creations\, projects and collaborations; and a meeting place for all the species of this world. \nExclusively\, the Ecopolis conversation is hosted in the artist private studio. Seats are limited. With your Ecopolis ticket you also have free access to the park. \n  \nProgramme: \n10:00 – 19:00 | Labiomista visit (cancelled) \nLABIOMISTA is open from 10:00 to 19:00. Visitors can visit the park prior to or following the talks and should count 2 hours. \n12:30 – 14:00 | Ecopolis Brussels livestream \nMeet the animal \n14:00 – 16:00 | Talks & debates \n\nIntroduction to Ecopolis: Again(st) Nature\nIntroduction to LABIOMISTA\, by Koen Vanmechelen\nAre we necessary? SUMMARY:Women* in Power
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nIn every country in every continent\, women are fighting on a global scale to end sexism\, sexist exploitation and oppression. They make their voices heard from the streets to parliament fighting for a world with gender equality\, freedom and free from oppression. \nWe support freedom of sexual orientation\, gender identity\, gender expression and sex characteristics within the framework of gender equality and feminism. We support women who fight to exist in a very patriarchal political scene and who create space for women in politics. Therefore\, the Green European Foundation with the support of Green Thought Association are organising this conference that brings activists\, politicians and academics from different countries together to share their experiences\, to show solidarity with each other and to network. \nContext:\nThis event is part of the GEF project “Gender Equality and Green Politics\,” organised with the support of Green Thought Association. Over the past few months\, we have regularly been gathering a group of Turkish activists\, academics\, and others to learn about and discuss issues of gender equality and feminism through a green lens. The conference builds on and is a culmination of some of these seminars\, engaging a broader audience and connecting the conversation in Turkey with that across Europe and beyond. \nSpeakers:\n\nTerry Reintke\, MEP Greens/EFA – via video message\nMałgorzata Tracz\, MP and co-leader of the Polish Greens\nHelena Gualinga\, Indigenous environmental and human rights activist\nNil Mutluer\, Green Thought Association and Humboldt University Berlin\nSüheyla Dogan\, Kazdağı Association for the Conservation of Natural and Cultural Heritage\nBegum Basdas\, Humboldt University\nDeniz Bayram\, Greenpeace Mediterranean\, Program Director\nGülnur Aksop\, Women’s platform for equality\, EŞİK – Deniz Yildizi Women’s Solidarity Association\n\nModerated by Nil Mutleur\, Green Thought Association and Humboldt University Berlin \nProgramme:\n13:00-15:45 CEST \nWelcome \nSession 1: Global solidarity in the women movement (ENG\, with TUR translation) \n\nTerry Reintke will provide a video opening\, while Nil Mutluer gives some further opening remarks. Then\, Małgorzata Tracz and Helena Gualinga talk about the local struggle in their countries and where it stands in the global feminist movement. The general framework of this session will be provided by Nil Mutluer\, an academic and member of the Green Party in Turkey.\n\nBreak \nSession 2: Women’s struggle in Turkey (TUR\, with ENG translation) \n\nOver the past several months in Turkey\, the feminist agenda has mostly been shaped by the discussions over the Istanbul Convention\, also known as The Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence. Women have been organizing campaigns in order to not lose this Convention. In the second part of the conference\, Begum Basdas will focus on EU policies – with concrete examples from Greece – women and LGBTI + refugees / asylum seekers who are living in crisis conditions. Deniz Bayram will talk about the local ecology struggles and the women’s issue in the climate struggle and Gülnur Aksop will cover latest discussions and feminist movement agenda over the Istanbul Convention. Finally\, Süheyla Dogan will talk about their activities\, women’s struggle\, and the relation to ecological movements.\n\nClosing \nPracticalities:\nThe conference is taking place on the Zoom video-conferencing platform. Please register in advance via this link. The Zoom link will be sent to all registered users.
