SUMMARY:Just Transition of the Economy
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nJoin us exploring the transition to an economy of the future. We will bring together speakers from the EU and the Western Balkans on the topic with their experiences and solutions to promote the importance of this transition all over Europe. \nWe have to rethink production and consumption from the perspective of a social circular economy. Only if the transformation is planned and executed in a just and equitable way\, it will find the timely and necessary support among the population. SUMMARY:‘Gaming Europe’ National Workshop 1 (Lisbon)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nWith the “Gaming Europe” project looking at video games\, the Green European Foundation aims to engage its audience directly in workshops on the use of video games by European teenagers aged 12 to 14. Based on the results of these workshops\, we aim to assess with experts from both the education sector and the video games world whether video games can be used as a medium to address the topic of Europe in an engaging\, fun\, and non-patronising fashion for this target group and\, if the answer is yes\, develop a game concept. The ultimate\, long-term goal of the project is to transfer this game concept into a game accessible to youth across Europe. \nThis national workshop’s main objective is to give the floor to young Portuguese about their taste and habits in video games\, their interest and knowledge of the European Union\, learning to conceptualise the skeleton of a fun and interesting game with a video game developer around the theme of Europe and its values. SUMMARY:Inclusion and Citizens’ Rights
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nWhen building “digital cities\,” how do we ensure inclusivity of new spaces and opportunities? \nThis workshop focuses on the different aspects (social\, environmental\, economic\, democratic) of this topic with a specific lens on Central and Eastern Europe. We hope to empower participants to influence public debate and local decision-making on technological innovations and their implementation in the cities of the region. \nLearnings from this process will be used to create a manifesto on principles of new technologies’ implementation in Eastern European cities. \nContext:\nThis project is a part of the GEF transnational project “A Charter for the Smart City II”. \nAll over Europe\, so-called ‘smart cities’ are the testing grounds for new technologies that affect how we live\, how we organise our societies and what our ethical foundation is. Given the opportunities that new technologies offer for reducing the ecological footprint of cities and creating new urban commons\, as well as the potential threats they pose to civil liberties and social justice\, GEF aims to stimulate the debate on smart cities. DESCRIPTION:Context:\nPart of the ‘Cities as Places of Hope’ series; a project launched in 2019 focussing on progressive city networks that are a key factor in the development for a positive narrative on the future of Europe. The GEF-19-01 Cities as Places of Hope project is carried out simultaneously in Belgium\, Croatia\, Spain\, North Macedonia and Turkey. \nAbout the Event:\nOur roundtable aims to increase the dialogue between the actors in the city with each other and to develop a supportive\, effective follow-up and participatory mechanism (network) for sustainable and green city planning. \nThe pandemic has had a massive impact on life in cities; during the lockdowns all around the world\, we have once again been shown importance of liveable cities. \nIn this process\, green areas that are accessible\, comfortable and planned for everyone; cities accessible by bicycle and on foot; comfortable\, climate-friendly and clean public transportation vehicles\, city management demonstrating the existence of social support and solidarity opportunities became prominent needs for green cities. \nIn many cities\, even if some of these opportunities are provided\, they cannot be placed in a governance plan within a sustainable and standard framework. DESCRIPTION:About European Green Activist Training (EGAT)\nDuring the EGAT course\, participants learn about Green values\, meet politicians and experts working at the frontline of fighting for positive change\, and of course connect with plenty of other like-minded young people! \nThe course gives them insights into the political decision-making processes on the national and European levels\, develop skills as an activist to enact societal change\, and explore how Green values promote more equal and sustainable societies. \nThe aim of EGAT is to familiarise trainees with the institutions of the European Union\, green topics\, green policies\, and sustainable development policies\, and through various activities and discussions with representatives of international organizations and representatives of the European Union\, to explore opportunities for active and professional involvement in building a greener and more just society. \nThe training course will be comprised of two weekend training sessions in the Czech Republic\, an online course\, a preparation session for the Brussels trip and then culminating with a one-week study trip to Brussels to visit the European Institutions alongside EGAT participants from other countries. \n\nFirst national training\n\nCzech Republic- Institute for Active Citizenship- October 24\, 25 \nProgramme: introduce EGAT programme\, explore motivations and expectations of programme\, presentation of Young Greens\, workshops on different methods of civic participation.   \n2. DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nGEF together with the Green Thought Association is launching a year-long project on gender equality and green politics. Selected participants take part in monthly expert and activist workshops\, building knowledge and creating video content on selected topics for wider dissemination. \nThis workshop will be held online on the 24th of October\, featuring as speaker Murat Göç-Bilgin. The topic that will be covered is Masculinity Studies. \nContext:\nWorkshops are open to selected applicants only and are held in Turkish\, but will culminate in a larger conference in October that includes the participation of international speakers as well. \nSpeaker:\nDr. Murat Göç-Bilgin holds a doctorate degree from Ege University\, Department of American Culture and Literature. He is currently teaching at the English Language and Literature Department at Celal Bayar University. DESCRIPTION:Context:\nThe COVID-19 pandemic not only hit the Western Balkan countries in a period of reacceleration of economic activity and put enormous pressure on the already fragile health systems in place\, but also had a negative impact on the state of democracy in the region. Cases of arbitrary arrest\, surveillance\, phone tapping\, privacy breaches and other digital rights violations during imposed emergency legislation have become an increasing concern. \nFurthermore\, many experts suggest that the crisis has seriously hampered the EU’s influence in the region. Even though it finally mobilised a financial package amounting to 3.3 billion Euro to fight Covid-19 and its impact in the Western Balkans\, the EU’s image in those countries deteriorated due to the initial lack of solidarity and hesitant response towards its neighbours in South-East Europe. Other global players such as China and Russia have been fast in offering assistance and investment to increase their own influence in the region. Often\, their economic support goes hand in hand with campaigns to foster alternative narratives and populist sentiments. \nHence\, with their joint online event\, the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung European Union and the Green European Foundation would like to address with the invited panellists what the latest developments amidst this crisis mean for the Western Balkans societies and what the implications for the region’s political future might be. DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nIn every country in every continent\, women are fighting on a global scale to end sexism\, sexist exploitation and oppression. They make their voices heard from the streets to parliament fighting for a world with gender equality\, freedom and free from oppression. \nWe support freedom of sexual orientation\, gender identity\, gender expression and sex characteristics within the framework of gender equality and feminism. We support women who fight to exist in a very patriarchal political scene and who create space for women in politics. DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nToday we live in a time of great crisis\, confronted by one of the severest challenges that humanity has ever faced: COVID – 19 is seen as health and ecological consequence of the „business as usual “model that ignored boundaries of environmental capital\, social inequalities and economic unsustainability. The Western Balkans region is affected on many levels: its fragile democracy is deteriorating\, natural resources commodified\, and local communities completely left on their own. There is no time to waste – we need to act now! \nFor four years now\, Green Economy Congress aims to build synergies with actors who are developing positive initiatives in the Western Balkans and EU on a narrative which allows us to have a bigger impact in the society transformation. In 2020. more than ever we need to work together to overcome the crisis. What gives us hope is that all over the region\, citizens are taking direct action – fighting for river conservation\, demanding clean air and pointing out on damaging practices like deforestation\, excessive extractive industry\, unsustainable tourism\, etc. Public policies and action from decision-makers are yet to follow. \nThe coronavirus crisis recovery and EU Green New Deal can be a chance to reshape a sustainable\, inclusive economy\, stimulating industry\, protecting essential biodiversity systems and tackling climate change in Western Balkans – but only if it has a holistic approach. For two days\, on October 15th and 16th\, 2020. this year in digital space\, using lectures and panel discussions\, we will try to map this momentum. \nContext:\nThis is the fourth edition of the Green Economy Congress\, a successful conference series that has connected experts\, activists\, and academics across the Western Balkan and beyond. DESCRIPTION:Context:\nCOVID-19 has exposed the shortcomings of our public systems weakened for decades by those same policies that led to the 2008 economic crisis. With teleworking becoming the new norm\, many event and training organisers find themselves in the position of having to transfer their working methods online thereby shedding light on the new opportunities for digital and hybrid collaborations. \nThese opportunities also enable us\, green organisations\, to reach further\, to strengthen our collaboration across countries\, and to solidify our work once an event has ended. SUMMARY:How to Finance Universal Basic Income
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nIn this fourth edition of our UBI webinar series\, tackling both international and Polish questions and dimensions of the topic\, we delve deeper into the question of how to finance a Universal Basic Income. What models exist\, how do they differ\, and what is the financial feasibility of this idea? \nContext:\nThe Green European Foundation has been working and researching the topic of UBI for a few years as part of a transnational project involving many countries. This year\, the project is entitled “CHANGE OF MINDSET. Civil society dialogue around UBI\, social justice and climate impact”. The Polish Green Foundation “Strefa Zieleni” joined the project\, recognising that it was time to start a public debate on this in Poland as well – not only on UBI itself but as part of a broader conversation: what social security system is best adapted to the needs and expectations of Polish society in times of great instability and turmoil? \nThis webinar series aims to foster that debate. We began with international webinars introducing the general concept of UBI\, the European UBI\, and the achievements of the GEF in promoting this debate\, and we discussed UBI pilots in Europe and elsewhere. SUMMARY:Green-Red Dialogues: Minimum Living Income – A Step Towards UBI?
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nCOVID-19 has once again put on the table the need for a change of model\, based on solidarity and equity for all European citizens. If we apply the same instruments that we have used up to now\, we are in danger of leaving many people behind\, creating a socially and economically unequal Europe. What model of Europe do we want? How can we ensure that people can live with dignity? How can we contribute to the creation of a social security system that works for all? How can we make it possible for people to live with dignity from their work without having to accept multiple jobs or over-exploitation? \nThe second Green-Red Dialogue will address the topic of Basic Income. The Green European Foundation has worked with experts on this topic for the past three years\, formulating “European Green Perspectives on Basic Income” together with several partner foundations including Fundacio Nous Horitzons. \nNow is a good time to present the conclusions of that research and put back on the agenda an issue that in the current crisis situation is more relevant than ever. The effects of the coronavirus have left much of the population excluded and the outlook for the coming years is not very encouraging. Current welfare and subsidy models have been shown to fall short both in protecting groups at risk of exclusion and encouraging economic development in Europe. \nAccording to experts in the field\, basic income could: improve the situation of people with a low purchasing power; prevent overexploitation\, job insecurity\, and illegal work; prevent fraud by companies against their employees; allow higher taxes to be levied on high incomes; and enable economic development through empowering groups at risk of exclusion by dignifying them and thus contributing to a fairer and more egalitarian society. \nThese and other questions will be addressed in this second discussion on Basic Income – featuring Pepe Fernández Albertos\, Aina Vidal\, and Philippe Van Parijs. \nContext:\nThis event is part of the Green Red Dialogues. The main purpose of this series of talks is to reflect on current issues from a green and social perspective. At a time when we have to face the global challenges as a result of COVID-19\, it is important to reflect on a green way out of the crisis. The current capitalist system has demonstrated that it promotes social inequality and that it attacks the planet\, and therefore\, all the inhabitants of the earth. We must urgently reverse the effects of the climate crisis and promote socially just and environmentally friendly models.
