SUMMARY:The impacts of Covid-19 on the Western Balkans and the region’s political future
DESCRIPTION:Context:\nThe COVID-19 pandemic not only hit the Western Balkan countries in a period of reacceleration of economic activity and put enormous pressure on the already fragile health systems in place\, but also had a negative impact on the state of democracy in the region. In response to the outbreak of the virus\, some governments relapsed into authoritarian tendencies increasing censorships and restricting the free flow of information. Cases of arbitrary arrest\, surveillance\, phone tapping\, privacy breaches and other digital rights violations during imposed emergency legislation have become an increasing concern. \nFurthermore\, many experts suggest that the crisis has seriously hampered the EU’s influence in the region. Even though it finally mobilised a financial package amounting to 3.3 billion Euro to fight Covid-19 and its impact in the Western Balkans\, the EU’s image in those countries deteriorated due to the initial lack of solidarity and hesitant response towards its neighbours in South-East Europe. Other global players such as China and Russia have been fast in offering assistance and investment to increase their own influence in the region. Often\, their economic support goes hand in hand with campaigns to foster alternative narratives and populist sentiments. \nHence\, with their joint online event\, the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung European Union and the Green European Foundation would like to address with the invited panellists what the latest developments amidst this crisis mean for the Western Balkans societies and what the implications for the region’s political future might be. What are the major impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on the Western Balkans? How have the governments in the region handled the crisis so far? And\, is it necessary for the EU to change its approach to the Western Balkans as reluctant and desultory commitments in the accession process are wearing out the EU’s good image in the region? \nSpeakers:\n\nLejla Gačanica\, Independent legal counsel and researcher\, Bosnia and Herzegovina\nLiljana Popovska\, former MP in the Macedonian Parliament and leader of Democratic Renewal of Macedonia (DOM)\, board member of the Green Institute\, North Macedonia\nAndrej Petrovski\, Director of Tech/CERT at SHARE Foundation\, Serbia\n\nModerator: \nSimon Ilse\, Office Director\, Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung Serbia\, Montenegro & Kosovo \n——- \nThe event will be live-streamed on Facebook and YouTube.

SUMMARY:Ecopolis – Again(st) Nature (Brussels\, Belgium)
DESCRIPTION:About Ecopolis: \nAnno 2020. Nature is on fire\, from Australia to the Ardennes. Forests are felled\, no more insects on the windshield\, concrete everywhere\, a million species are in danger of extinction. A virus turns the world upside down. The exploitation of nature is threatening our existence. Vulnerable groups here and in the South are facing even harder times. \nHow much longer do we saw off the very branch that supports us? Or do we change course? \nEcopolis 2020 puts the finger on the pulse and looks ahead. What are the post-corona challenges? How do we feel part of nature again? How do we restore the balance? How does this support a vigorous climate and nature policy? Which transitions are necessary ― urban\, agricultural\, etc. ― for a society that respects people and nature? And gives everyone prospect of a good life. \nEcopolis 2020 is moving online\, follow the event at home via livestream. \nDue to the recent increase of coronavirus infections\, we have had to take a difficult decision. This year’s edition will have no live audience\, and will move entirely online. We will build a cosy studio on the Kaaitheater stage and stream the lectures and conversations directly to your living room\, with opportunities for online interaction. \nSpeakers:\n\nJan Rotmans\, Urgenda\nWarda El-Kaddouri\, De Groene Amsterdammer\nYousra Benfquih\, University of Antwerp\nHans Van Dyck\, UCLouvain\nTom Bauler\, Université Libre de Bruxelles\nHendrik Schoukens\, Ghent University\nAnuna De Wever\, climate activist\nEva Meijer\, Wageningen University\nMyriam Dumortier\, Ghent University\n\nAnd many more names to be announced! \nProgramme: \n11:00 – 12:30 | Corona lessons for a resilient society \nThe corona crisis has taught us that you cannot just cut down forests or deal carelessly with animals endlessly. Outsourcing all production to low-wage countries is also no longer an option. How do we build resilient societies that are ecologically and socially durable? \nA panel discussion with Myriam Dumortier (bio engineer and senior researcher at INBO)\, Koen Vannmechelen (contemporary conceptual artist)\, Jan Rotmans (transition thinker) and Christine Van Acker (writer). \n12:30 – 14:00 | Meet the animal \nFor centuries we have been intrigued by animals and have used them in our stories. Who does not know Reynard the Fox? Only recently have we learned how small the differences between humans and animals are. What does an understanding relationship with animals with recognition of their own abilities mean? \nA conversation that explores new paths with: Eva Meijer (writer\, philosopher and artist)\, Hans Van Dyck (professor Behavioral Biology)\, Hendrik Schoukens (environmental lawyer)\, Lisa Tostado (Heinrich Böllstiftung\, which recently released the Insect Atlas). \n14:00 – 15:30 | Transition to a fair agro-ecology \nAgricultural soils are eroding\, biodiversity is declining alarmingly. Fortunately\, we see new agro-ecological farmers emerge. Through short-chain they restore contact with consumers while also taking care of the surrounding nature. The challenge is to make these innovative practices the new normal. \nA conversation with Yousra Benfquih (lawyer\, poet and columnist)\, Louis De Jaeger (landscape architect) and others. \n15:30 – 17:00 | Cities full of nature and the barren countryside \nIt is at odds with what we think: the city is full of nature and agricultural areas are increasingly turning into deserts. But there is work to be done everywhere. For example\, green space in the city is unevenly distributed and there is a need for a different vision of open space with reinforced village centers. \nWith Paul Demets (poet)\, Els Vervloesem (transition architect) and Tom Bauler (ecological economist). \n17:00 – 18:00 | Final debate \nThe starting point is the question posed by the French thinker Bruno Latour: Where can we land? How can we “ground ourselves” and take care of our living environment\, while being open to the world? \nWith Warda El-Kaddouri (researcher and journalist)\, Anuna De Wever (climate activist)\, Olivier de Schutter (UN special rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights) and Dirk Holemans (coordinator of Oikos – Think tank for socio-ecological change). \n  \nLabiomista\, Genk \nIn 2019 artist Koen Vanmechelen launched LABIOMISTA\, an evolving work of art situated on the foundations of a former zoo in Genk (BE). \nVanmechelen is one of the most versatile thinkers of these times. He works at the confluence of art\, science\, philosophy and community. LABIOMISTA is the embodiment of his artistic and philosophical vision. It is based on the belief in art as a driver of mutual understanding and as a guide in the search for answers to the major challenges of the 21st century\, the relationship between nature and culture and in particular the development of sustainable communities. \nThe 24-hectare park is a permanent and evolving work of art\, a garden of order and chaos\, an arena of culture and nature. It invites\, challenges and inspires. It is a hotbed for a wealth of new ideas\, creations\, projects and collaborations; and a meeting place for all the species of this world. \nExclusively\, the Ecopolis conversation is hosted in the artist private studio. Seats are limited. With your Ecopolis ticket you also have free access to the park. \n  \nProgramme: \n10:00 – 19:00 | Labiomista visit (cancelled) \nLABIOMISTA is open from 10:00 to 19:00. Visitors can visit the park prior to or following the talks and should count 2 hours. \n12:30 – 14:00 | Ecopolis Brussels livestream \nMeet the animal \n14:00 – 16:00 | Talks & debates \n\nIntroduction to Ecopolis: Again(st) Nature\nIntroduction to LABIOMISTA\, by Koen Vanmechelen\nAre we necessary? The position of the human animal. Panel discussion with Koen Vanmechelen\, Ignace Schops\, Glenn Deliège and Lara Klaassen\, moderated by Peter Dupont\n\n  \nTranslab K at CC ‘t Schaliken\, Herentals \n13:30 – 15:30 | Softening with an eye for biodiversity \nBuilding on their experiments on ‘softening with an eye for biodiversity’\, VormingPlus invites Stijn Neuteleers (environmental philosopher)\, Tim Vekemans (architect) and Liesl Vanautgaerden (program director for spatial development at the Department of Environment of the Flemish Government). \n15:30 – 18:00 | Ecopolis Brussels livestream \n15:30 – 17:00   Cities full of nature and the barren countryside \n17:00 – 18:00   Final debate \n  \nPracticalities:\nEcopolis goes on! SUMMARY:Women* in Power
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nIn every country in every continent\, women are fighting on a global scale to end sexism\, sexist exploitation and oppression. They make their voices heard from the streets to parliament fighting for a world with gender equality\, freedom and free from oppression. \nWe support freedom of sexual orientation\, gender identity\, gender expression and sex characteristics within the framework of gender equality and feminism. We support women who fight to exist in a very patriarchal political scene and who create space for women in politics. Therefore\, the Green European Foundation with the support of Green Thought Association are organising this conference that brings activists\, politicians and academics from different countries together to share their experiences\, to show solidarity with each other and to network. \nContext:\nThis event is part of the GEF project “Gender Equality and Green Politics\,” organised with the support of Green Thought Association. Over the past few months\, we have regularly been gathering a group of Turkish activists\, academics\, and others to learn about and discuss issues of gender equality and feminism through a green lens. The conference builds on and is a culmination of some of these seminars\, engaging a broader audience and connecting the conversation in Turkey with that across Europe and beyond. \nSpeakers:\n\nTerry Reintke\, MEP Greens/EFA – via video message\nMałgorzata Tracz\, MP and co-leader of the Polish Greens\nHelena Gualinga\, Indigenous environmental and human rights activist\nNil Mutluer\, Green Thought Association and Humboldt University Berlin\nSüheyla Dogan\, Kazdağı Association for the Conservation of Natural and Cultural Heritage\nBegum Basdas\, Humboldt University\nDeniz Bayram\, Greenpeace Mediterranean\, Program Director\nGülnur Aksop\, Women’s platform for equality\, EŞİK – Deniz Yildizi Women’s Solidarity Association\n\nModerated by Nil Mutleur\, Green Thought Association and Humboldt University Berlin \nProgramme:\n13:00-15:45 CEST \nWelcome \nSession 1: Global solidarity in the women movement (ENG\, with TUR translation) \n\nTerry Reintke will provide a video opening\, while Nil Mutluer gives some further opening remarks. Then\, Małgorzata Tracz and Helena Gualinga talk about the local struggle in their countries and where it stands in the global feminist movement. The general framework of this session will be provided by Nil Mutluer\, an academic and member of the Green Party in Turkey.\n\nBreak \nSession 2: Women’s struggle in Turkey (TUR\, with ENG translation) \n\nOver the past several months in Turkey\, the feminist agenda has mostly been shaped by the discussions over the Istanbul Convention\, also known as The Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence. Women have been organizing campaigns in order to not lose this Convention. In the second part of the conference\, Begum Basdas will focus on EU policies – with concrete examples from Greece – women and LGBTI + refugees / asylum seekers who are living in crisis conditions. Deniz Bayram will talk about the local ecology struggles and the women’s issue in the climate struggle and Gülnur Aksop will cover latest discussions and feminist movement agenda over the Istanbul Convention. Finally\, Süheyla Dogan will talk about their activities\, women’s struggle\, and the relation to ecological movements.\n\nClosing \nPracticalities:\nThe conference is taking place on the Zoom video-conferencing platform. Please register in advance via this link. The Zoom link will be sent to all registered users.

SUMMARY:Green Economy Congress
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nToday we live in a time of great crisis\, confronted by one of the severest challenges that humanity has ever faced: COVID – 19 is seen as health and ecological consequence of the „business as usual “model that ignored boundaries of environmental capital\, social inequalities and economic unsustainability. The Western Balkans region is affected on many levels: its fragile democracy is deteriorating\, natural resources commodified\, and local communities completely left on their own. There is no time to waste – we need to act now! \nFor four years now\, Green Economy Congress aims to build synergies with actors who are developing positive initiatives in the Western Balkans and EU on a narrative which allows us to have a bigger impact in the society transformation. In 2020. more than ever we need to work together to overcome the crisis. What gives us hope is that all over the region\, citizens are taking direct action – fighting for river conservation\, demanding clean air and pointing out on damaging practices like deforestation\, excessive extractive industry\, unsustainable tourism\, etc. Public policies and action from decision-makers are yet to follow. \nThe coronavirus crisis recovery and EU Green New Deal can be a chance to reshape a sustainable\, inclusive economy\, stimulating industry\, protecting essential biodiversity systems and tackling climate change in Western Balkans – but only if it has a holistic approach. For two days\, on October 15th and 16th\, 2020. this year in digital space\, using lectures and panel discussions\, we will try to map this momentum. \nContext:\nThis is the fourth edition of the Green Economy Congress\, a successful conference series that has connected experts\, activists\, and academics across the Western Balkan and beyond. While this year’s edition will be taking place online\, we hope to continue connecting great speakers and participants and sparking inspiring discussions on the topic at hand. \nSpeakers:\nGreen Agenda for Western Balkans: Politics & Policy \n\nLiljana Popovska\, DOM Macedonia\nLjiljana Jokić\, URA Montenegro\nIva Marković\, Organization for political ecology Polekol\n\n(Un)sustainable: tourism in nature protected areas \n\nMilan Ruzic\, Bird Protection and Study Society of Serbia\n\nAgenda 2030: Path for Green Balkans \n\nNatasa Gligorijevic\, Center for Sustainable Development of Serbia\n\nMy Green New Deal: Green Economy from Idea to Reality \n\nVeljko Nešić\, Small food producers in Serbia\nPredrag Milovanović\, Organela\n\nGreen Cities and The New Urban Agenda \n\nSiniša Trkulja\, independent expert\n\nClimate Neutrality in Western Balkans: Time to set a new path \n\nVedad Suljic\, Regional Education and Information Center for Sustainable Development in South-East Europe\nAna Petrovska\, DOM Macedonia\n\nProgramme:\nOctober 15th\, 2020 \n\n11: 00 – 12: 30 Panel Discussion – Green Agenda for Western Balkans: Politics & Policy\n13: 00 – 13: 45 Lecture – (Un)sustainable: tourism in nature protected areas\n\nOctober 16th\, 2020. \n\n11: 00 – 11: 45 Lecture – Agenda 2030: Path for Green Balkans\n12: 00 – 13: 15 Panel Discussion – My Green New Deal: Green Economy from Idea to Reality\n13: 30 – 14: 15 Lecture – Green Cities and The New Urban Agenda\n14: 30 – 15:45 Panel Discussion – Climate Neutrality in Western Balkans: Time to set a new path\n\nPracticalities:\nThe Green Economy Congress will be taking online on 15 and 16 October\, from 11:00 to 16:30. \nLectures and discussions will take place in Serbian and English\, with simultaneous translation provided. \nPlease apply here. SUMMARY:How to Finance Universal Basic Income
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nIn this fourth edition of our UBI webinar series\, tackling both international and Polish questions and dimensions of the topic\, we delve deeper into the question of how to finance a Universal Basic Income. What models exist\, how do they differ\, and what is the financial feasibility of this idea? \nContext:\nThe Green European Foundation has been working and researching the topic of UBI for a few years as part of a transnational project involving many countries. This year\, the project is entitled “CHANGE OF MINDSET. Civil society dialogue around UBI\, social justice and climate impact”. The Polish Green Foundation “Strefa Zieleni” joined the project\, recognising that it was time to start a public debate on this in Poland as well – not only on UBI itself but as part of a broader conversation: what social security system is best adapted to the needs and expectations of Polish society in times of great instability and turmoil? \nThis webinar series aims to foster that debate. We began with international webinars introducing the general concept of UBI\, the European UBI\, and the achievements of the GEF in promoting this debate\, and we discussed UBI pilots in Europe and elsewhere. Then we narrowed down on the Polish perspective and prospects for implementation\, which continues with this webinar on financing. \nSpeakers:\nProf. Monika Kostera – Professor of economy at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow \nRafał Woś – Economic journalist and opinion leader \nModeration and comments by Ewa Sufin-Jacquemart and Wojciech Kłosowski. \nPracticalities:\nThis webinar will take place in Polish. It is open to anyone\, but please register and join using this link.  \nWe will use the Zoom video conferencing platform. It is recommended to join the webinar via a PC. You do not need to install additional software. However\, for the best user experience and full participation features\, we recommend installing the Zoom Desktop App\, which is free.

SUMMARY:Green-Red Dialogues: Minimum Living Income – A Step Towards UBI?
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nCOVID-19 has once again put on the table the need for a change of model\, based on solidarity and equity for all European citizens. If we apply the same instruments that we have used up to now\, we are in danger of leaving many people behind\, creating a socially and economically unequal Europe. What model of Europe do we want? How can we ensure that people can live with dignity? How can we contribute to the creation of a social security system that works for all? How can we make it possible for people to live with dignity from their work without having to accept multiple jobs or over-exploitation? \nThe second Green-Red Dialogue will address the topic of Basic Income. The Green European Foundation has worked with experts on this topic for the past three years\, formulating “European Green Perspectives on Basic Income” together with several partner foundations including Fundacio Nous Horitzons. \nNow is a good time to present the conclusions of that research and put back on the agenda an issue that in the current crisis situation is more relevant than ever. The effects of the coronavirus have left much of the population excluded and the outlook for the coming years is not very encouraging. Current welfare and subsidy models have been shown to fall short both in protecting groups at risk of exclusion and encouraging economic development in Europe. \nAccording to experts in the field\, basic income could: improve the situation of people with a low purchasing power; prevent overexploitation\, job insecurity\, and illegal work; prevent fraud by companies against their employees; allow higher taxes to be levied on high incomes; and enable economic development through empowering groups at risk of exclusion by dignifying them and thus contributing to a fairer and more egalitarian society. \nThese and other questions will be addressed in this second discussion on Basic Income – featuring Pepe Fernández Albertos\, Aina Vidal\, and Philippe Van Parijs. \nContext:\nThis event is part of the Green Red Dialogues. The main purpose of this series of talks is to reflect on current issues from a green and social perspective. At a time when we have to face the global challenges as a result of COVID-19\, it is important to reflect on a green way out of the crisis. The current capitalist system has demonstrated that it promotes social inequality and that it attacks the planet\, and therefore\, all the inhabitants of the earth. We must urgently reverse the effects of the climate crisis and promote socially just and environmentally friendly models. We need to ensure that these proposals reach citizens\, and explain that it is compatible with the economy\, progress and development. \nThe first dialogue dealt with green responses to the health and climate crisis. \nSpeakers:\nPhilippe Van Parijs\, professor of philosophy and key promoter of basic income. \nPepe Fernández Albertos\, doctor in political science from Harvard University and researcher at the Centro Superior de Investigaciones Científicas. \nAina Vidal\, deputy at the Congress of Deputies of En Comú-Podem. \nModerator: Marc Rius \nPracticalities:\nDate: September 17th (18:00 – 19:15 CEST) \nThis event will take place in Spanish and English\, with simultaneous translation provided via Zoom. \nYou can join the Zoom call directly here. The webinar will also be livestreamed on the YouTube channel of Fundació Nous Horitzons. \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation\, with the support of Fundació Nous Horitzons and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Call for participants: GEF Digital Workshop on Resource Mobilisation
DESCRIPTION:Context:\nThe global health and economic crises are forcing nonprofit organisations in Europe and beyond to adapt to unprecedentedly strenuous conditions. One of the most impacted fields for nonprofit organisations has been fundraising and resource mobilisation\, with shrinking resources provided by philanthropic foundations\, corporations\, and individuals alike and in-person events being severely restricted. \nIn response to this challenge\, the Green European Foundation is putting forth a workshop on resource mobilisation\, aiming to assist civil society actors and grassroots movements working on topics such as education on Europe and European values\, green transition and Green Deal\, sustainability\, social justice\, gender equality and energy transition\, to find solutions to their fundraising outlook and strategy. \nThe workshop will take place on October 9\, 2020\, from 14:00 – 15:30. \nWorkshop Objectives:\nThroughout the 1.5h workshop\, participants will find out what are some of the key challenges and response measures in the field of fundraising\, share their experience on best practices in the field of fundraising\, and find potential partners to apply for funding together with. \nFormat: \nThe expert\, Karen Hoehn\, will commence by sharing her fundraising insights\, followed by questions from the moderator and audience. The discussion will be followed by open space sessions on fundraising topics that the participants will be invited to join\, depending on their interest\, and exchange about the best practices and challenges that they face in their resource mobilisation efforts. We aim to have participants representing small and medium-sized non-profits\, activists and representatives of grassroots movements. \nSpeaker:\nKaren Hoehn is a fundraising professional\, who has raised US1.65 billion to improve health and reduce poverty among impoverished communities and vulnerable people in the US\, Africa\, Asia\, Latin America and Europe by developing programs and systems; influencing public policy; mobilising resources and helping organisations grow. \nPlease note: we will be selecting a maximum of 20 participants for this workshop to ensure an environment more conducive to comfortable\, lively and fruitful exchanges. \nThe implementation of the “Resilience and Resource Mobilisation Workshops” project within the framework of the Bosch Alumni Network and the Green European Foundation was made possible by the International Alumni Center and the financial support of the European Parliament. \nRegister here by Friday\, October 2\, 17:00 CET \nNumber of places: 20

SUMMARY:Just Transition Learning Lab: Mapping the Movement
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nIf there’s one thing history has shown us\, it’s that there is no point reinventing the wheel – if someone else has a great idea\, steal it and implement it and improve upon it. This applies just as much to activism as everything else – across Europe and the world there are probably thousands of great just transition initiatives happening that could be implemented everywhere. This webinar will help with this issue – using interactive online software you’ll map out some of the best of these initiatives and be able to steal their best ideas. \nThis webinar aims at mapping youth-led initiatives that are leading the process of a just transition across Europe. We will use an interactive digital map to gather and explore input from Young Greens and for the production of the Green Principles for a just transition. \nParticipants will have some dedicated time to explore already mapped initiatives in groups divided based on focus (energy\, transport and food) and discuss with fellow youngsters whether these practices would be fit in their communities or not\, and why. \nWe will also be joined by two or three guest speakers who will share their experience of working on campaigning for a just transition from a youth and activist perspective and the challenges at the policy level. \nContext:\nThis webinar is part of the Green European Foundation’s Just Transition transnational project. The project looks into the question of transforming from an extractive to a regenerative economy in a just and equitable way to find the necessary support among the population. It seeks to show that the green family\, including GEF in its specific role\, is a leading actor in the development of future-proof politics and policies\, developed in a sensitive way that keeps in mind local specificities. \nSpeakers:\nSinéad Merciers is a recent consultant in just transition policy and climate change law at the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission. Her specific interest focuses on energy law and building collaborative engagement structures around the just transition to a low carbon future. \nFrida Kieninger is a Brussels-based Food & Water Europe campaign officer promoting a ban on fracking in Europe. After completing her master’s thesis on intensive agriculture in southern Spain\, Frida became involved with issues concerning the European food system as well as the transition to a sustainable energy system\, community energy and questions of climate justice. \nProgramme:\n19:00 Participants join the call \n19:00-19:05 Introduction \n19:05-19:40 NFE session to explore Just Transition youth-led initiatives on MapHub \n19:40-20:20 Panel discussion \n20:20-20:30 Q&A \nPracticalities:\nThe Learning Lab is open to young people from across Europe.  Apply via this form. \nDetails and the link to the call will be sent via email on the day of the event. \nThis event is part of our Just Transition project and is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of the Federation of Young European Greens. \nWith the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.
