SUMMARY:Public values in smart grids (Webinar)
DESCRIPTION:About this webinar\nA fully renewable electricity system is largely powered by wind and solar. These are intermittent energy sources. How do we keep supply and demand in balance? Data and artificial intelligence will play a major role in this balancing act. Smart electricity grids help adjusting supply and demand\, using data on the forecasted weather\, the available power storage and conversion capacity\, and the willingness of companies and households to make their electricity consumption dependent on supply and price. \nA smart grid is not necessarily fair\, transparent\, and privacy-friendly. It doesn’t necessarily allow for human control over algorithms and democratic participation.  How can we integrate these public values into the design of smart grids\, from local microgrids to centralised macrogrids? \nThe Green European Foundation\, Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks\, and Oikos will try to find answers to this question in a webinar. It will gather (local) politicians\, practitioners\, activists and members of energy cooperatives from various European countries\, in a coronavirus-proof way. \nThe webinar will start with two presentations: \nFabian Reetz (100 prozent erneuerbar stiftung\, Berlin) will explain the basics of a smart electricity grid and its importance for speeding up the transition towards a 100% renewable energy system. \nChristine Milchram (Delft University of Technology) will speak about smart grids and energy justice. How can fairness\, data privacy and other public values be integrated into smart grids? \nThe first comments to the presentations will be delivered by Yvonne van Sark\, president of homeowner’s association Schoon Schip\, which runs a smart microgrid in Amsterdam. \nThe webinar will be facilitated by Dirk Holemans (Oikos). \nThis is a joint event of the GEF projects A Charter for the Smart City and Cities as Places of Hope. \nTimetable\n14:00  Welcome by Dirk Holemans \n14:15  Presentation on smart grids and the energy transition by Fabian Reetz \n14.35  Q&A \n14:50  Short break \n15:00  Presentation on smart grids and energy justice by Christine Milchram \n15:20  First comments by Yvonne van Sark \n15:25  Q&A \n15:40  Group discussion \n16:00 Closing words by Dirk Holemans \nLanguage\nThe webinar will be conducted in English. \nPlatform\nWe will use the Zoom video conferencing platform. It is recommended to join the webinar via a PC. You don’t need to install additional software. However\, for the best user experience and full participation features\, we recommend to install the Zoom Desktop App\, which is free. \nRegistration\nRequired. Please note that the number of participants is limited\, so register soon following this link. \n—— \nBackground information \nEnerginet\, Smart Grid Denmark (video)\, 2011\nFabian Reetz & Céline Göhlich\, Prinzipien für die Energiepolitik der Zukunft\, policy brief Stiftung Neue Verantwortung (in German)\, 2020\nMarten Boekelo\, ‘Full interview with Christine Milchram on energy justice in smart grids’\, The Social Life of Energy blog\, 2020\nChristine Milchram & al.\, ‘Energy Justice and Smart Grid Systems: Evidence from the Netherlands and the United Kingdom’\, Applied Energy\, 2018\nOtto Barten\, ‘Smart grids in de slimme stad’\, Handvest voor de Slimme Stad\, pp. 85-112 (in Dutch)\, 2019\nEuropean Data Protection Supervisor\, TechDispatch #2: Smart Meters in Smart Homes\, 2019\nGreen European Foundation\, A Charter for the Smart City\, 2019

SUMMARY:It's Not Just a Transition: Youth in Cities (Postponed)
DESCRIPTION:We’re hosting an essential discussion on the role of Universal Basic Income in the just transition towards a carbon-neutral society\, with focus on how this could help young people . \nGEF\, together with FYEG is holding a workshop in Barcelona\, entitled ‘It’s Not Just a Transition: Youth in Cities’. The workshop will take place in two parts: \n\nSocial justice perspective from each track implemented during the event (transport\, urban development\, energy). For each track\, a vision for the future is previously imagined. In this session we link this vision to the vision for a more just city for the youth.\nDiscussion on the role of UBI in the transition towards a carbon-neutral society\, with focus on how this could help young people (1) realize their dreams/their vision for the future and (2) become more politically active. We will look into the B-Mincome experiment done in Barcelona.\n\nThe seminar kicks-off our 6-partner project ‘Change of Mindset – Civil Society dialogue around UBI\, Social Justice and Climate impact‘\, which aims to spark a stronger civil society dialogue to bring about the change of mindset needed to raise acceptance of universal basic income among the public and to deepen the debate on our conceptions of productivity and work. \nCan’t attend the event? Follow us on Facebook and Twitter  to keep up-to-date with the discussions at the workshop.

SUMMARY:Citizen scoring – towards a surveillance state for the poor? (Webinar)
DESCRIPTION:About this webinar\nWhat’s your opinion on ‘citizen scoring’? Big data analytics is gaining traction among local and national governments. By feeding large swaths of personal data into algorithms\, they try to predict which social benefit recipients are most likely to commit fraud or which children are most at risk of abuse or neglect\, for instance. Does the ‘scoring’ of citizens by algorithms boost government efficiency or is it a threat to privacy\, social justice and the transparency of government? Which legal restrictions apply to citizen scoring and which ethical boundaries should we set? \nThe Green European Foundation and Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks will try to find answers to these questions in a webinar. It will gather people who are active in (local) politics from various European countries\, in a coronavirus-proof way. \nThe webinar will start with three presentations: \nRichard Wouters (Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks\, NL) will introduce the Charter for the Smart City that the Green European Foundation published in 2019. The Charter contains the warning that the use of big data to combat benefit fraud may lead to ‘class injustice’. \nLina Dencik (co-director of the Data Justice Lab\, Cardiff School of Journalism\, UK) will present the results of an extensive investigation into the use of citizen scoring by local authorities and police forces in the UK. \nRonald Huissen (Bij Voorbaat Verdacht\, NL) will explain the ground-breaking verdict against the Dutch fraud detection algorithm SyRI. In February\, a court ordered the immediate halt of SyRI because it violated the right to privacy. Huissen represents the NGO coalition which filed the lawsuit against SyRI. \nThe first comments to the presentations will be delivered by Kathalijne Buitenweg (MP for GroenLinks\, NL) and Martin Fodor (local councillor for the Green Party in Bristol\, UK; rapporteur on smart cities for the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe). \nThe webinar will be facilitated by Carlotta Weber (Green European Foundation). \nTimetable\n14:00 Welcome by Carlotta Weber \n14:20 Presentation of the Charter for the Smart City by Richard Wouters \n14:25 Presentation on citizen scoring in the UK by Lina Dencik \n14:45 First comments by Martin Fodor \n14:50 Q&A \n15:05 Presentation on the SyRI court case in NL by Ronald Huissen \n15:25 First comments by Kathalijne Buitenweg \n15:30 Q&A \n15:45 Break \n15:55 Group discussion \n16:55 Closing words by Carlotta Weber \nLanguage\nThe webinar will be conducted in English. \nPlatform\nWe will use the Zoom video conferencing platform. It is recommend to join the webinar via a PC. You don’t need to install additional software. However\, for the best user experience and full participation features\, we recommend to install the Zoom Desktop App\, which is for free. \nRegistration\nRequired. SUMMARY:For a new territorial perspective - imagining post-urban alternatives (Paris)
DESCRIPTION:Event background\nThis event is part of the transnational project Cities as Places of Hope in the European Union which explores progressive city networks and their potential to foster real change – may it be on food\, energy or migration policies. Cities are organising themselves increasingly in trans-local networks and are pushing the boundaries of traditional governance structures. \nAbout the event\nThis conference\, organised with the support of Guillaume Gontard\, French Senator\, and Fondation de l’Écologie Politique will delve into the subject of post-urbanism and its implications on municipal politics. \nOur landscapes are undergoing major changes\, first and foremost the concentration of human settlement in major metropolitan areas. Promoted by governments for decades\, these concentrations and densities appear less and less ecologically habitable\, sociologically fair\, economically viable and democratically constituted. In response to this socio-ecological excess\, a different territorial perspective opens up\, initiated by alternatives that offer other places\nto live and forms of life\, more respectful relationships to environment and other living beings\, forms of cooperative economies and more functional direct forms of political action. \nSuch ideas and practices can highlight new paths towards a ecological\, post-urban society. \nDraft Programme\n13:30 Registration \n14:00 Opening – Guillaume Gontard\, French Senator\, and Alice Canabate\, Vice-president of Fondation de l’Écologie Politique \n14:15 First Roundtable – Saturated European metropolises or the need for a future of post-urban territories (and policies) \nWith: Guillaume Faburel (Lyon University 2)\, Mathilde Girault (Lyon University)\, Sébastien Marot (École d’architecture Paris-Est) \n15:30 Presentation of “Bioregion 2050”\, a report from the from the Momentum Institute and the Forum Vies Mobiles \nWith: Yves Cochet\, Agnès SinaÏ and BenoÎt Thévart \n16:15 Second Roundtable –  Alternative socio-ecological formats and perspectives for the bio-region in Italy and France \nWith: Ilaria Agostini (Bologna University)\, Christophe Laurens (Master Alternatives urbaines de Vitry sur Seine)\, Daniela Poli (Florence University) \n17:45 Conclusion and synthesis – Guillaume Gontard and Guillaume Faburel \nPracticalities\nThe event will be held in French. SUMMARY:Our Future: Fair & Healthy Food (Brussels)
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nA systemic crisis permeates our food and agricultural sector. Food\, turned into a commodity to generate profit\, feeds the greed of the few rather than the stomachs of the many in a healthy way. Decades of yield maximization and export-oriented monocultures in a globalising economy have broken our food and agricultural chain. Business-as-usual has become impossible. \nBut the tide is changing. More and more research and policy reports and practices point to a hopeful alternative approach to food and agriculture: Agroecology\, as an integrated vision\, aims to reconnect soil\, plants\, animals and humans with the environment. It integrates the social dimension of a fair and sustainable food system. At the same time\, more and more cities put this vision in practice in concrete urban food policies. It is now the time for a new EU policy\, reflecting and supporting this holistic vision. \nProgramme\n09:00 Registration \n09:30 Words of welcome by  by Dirk Holemans (Green European Foundation) \n09:45 Fair & healthy food: presentation of GEF paper by Kati Van de Velde (Think Tank Oikos) \n10:05 Our food as a commons: Jose Luis Vivero Pol (scholar\, Head WFP VAM Myanmar) \n10:25 Towards ecologically & socially resilient food and agriculture systems by Thomas Van Craen (CEO Triodos Bank) \n11:20 Diversity & inclusion in food practices: Deirdre Woods (food justice practitioner & researcher) \n  \n11:40 Towards a Common Food Policy for the EU by Olivier De Schutter (Co-chair of IPESFood) \n12:00 How to build a better world: Challenges & opportunities in the global governance of food security by Mario Arvelo (Dominican Ambassador to the UN in Rome & Chair of the Committee on World Food Security)\n \n12:20 Urban food policy: the city of Gent by Tine Heyse (Alderwoman city of Ghent) \n12:40 Reaction by Paulo Caruso de Lima (Liaison Officer\, FAO Brussels) and Q&A with the audience \n13:00 Closing remarks by Petra De Sutter (MEP Greens/EFA) \n13:30 End \n  \n\n  \nRegistration\nEntrance to this event is free\, but spaces are limited and registration is required. \nIf you would like to attend this event\, please register via the form found here.  \n\n
