SUMMARY:Green-Red Dialogues: Green Answers to the Health and Climate Crisis
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nThe first Green-Red Dialogue will address key issues such as health\, basic income and the economy. \nWhat health model allows us to face possible future pandemics? The European Union is diverse\, and the member states have faced the crisis from different health models\, which have proven to be more effective in this fight against the COVID-18? How can we work to make the health system of the member countries more efficient and inclusive? \nThis is a health crisis that today\, more than ever\, cannot be addressed without taking into account the link with the climate crisis. The model of consumption is linked to agri-food exploitation\, which also causes the deforestation of the planet and in turn has consequences for our health. Should we ignore the fact that the macro animal farms have something to do with the origin of the COVID-19? And what about the air we breathe? How does it influence our health\, our defences\, and the increased vulnerability to severe symptoms of the coronavirus? \nContext:\nThis event is part of the Green Red Dialogues. The main purpose of this series of talks is to reflect on current issues from a green and social perspective. At a time when we have to face the global challenges as a result of COVID-19\, it is important to reflect on a green way out of the crisis. \nSpeakers:\nSka Keller\, Co-President of Greens/EFA in the European Parliament \nJoan Herrera\, lawyer and politician\, former leader of Iniciativa per Catalunya \nModerator: Marc Rius\, Director of Fundació Nous Horitzons \nProgramme: \n18h00 Opening words by Marc Rius \n18h05 Contribution from Ska Keller \n18h20 Contribution from Joan Herrera \n18h35 Q&A \n19h00 Final round of closing words \n19h15 End \nPracticalities:\nThe primary language of the event is Catalan. \nThis event will be livestreamed on the YouTube channel of Fundació Nous Horitzons. \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation\, with the support of Fundació Nous Horitzons and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:With UBI\, We Would Be Less Afraid of the Coronavirus Crisis (Webinar)
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nWe would like to invite you to the first edition of a series of four webinars on the topic of universal basic income (UBI). This event series is organised for by the Green European Foundation\, with the support of Fundacja Strefa Zieleni\, and a grassroots initiative of Polish activists: “Community of Ideas”. It consists of two Polish and two international webinars. \nOne feature of our current unsustainable system is the massive\, and rapidly growing\, increase in inequalities – emphasizing feelings of insecurity and material instability for a growing share of the population\, and especially among young people. \nEven in the “old Europe” countries\, with some of the most caring welfare state systems in the world\, the growing trends of precarious work and increasing workforce poverty have grown too much to be thought of as marginal. The overwhelming feeling of social injustice often leads either to social unrest\, like with the yellow vest movement in France\, or to the development of populism and political authoritarianism\, which we can observe\, among other places\, in Poland. \nThe past few years have seen research and some practical experiments in search of systemic answers to enable people to meet their basic needs – in times of structural inequalities and instability\, due in part to this spread of precarious work and the destructive consequences of rapid climate change. The universal basic income (UBI) is one of the solutions on the table. \nIn this webinar\, we take a look at the existing work GEF has done on UBI\, where these ideas come from\, and what they are based on. We will also discuss why this is a “green” concept\, consistent with “green policy\,” have an overview of the UBI reflections and experiments in different countries\, and address its critics. Finally\, we touch on GEF’s continuing research plans on the topic and go over the present efforts to introduce a pan-European basic income and other social security measures at the EU level. \nContext:\nThe Green European Foundation has been working and conducting research on the topic of UBI for a few years as part of a transnational project involving many countries. This year\, the project is entitled “CHANGE OF MINDSET. Civil society dialogue around UBI\, social justice and climate impact”. The Polish Green Foundation “Strefa Zieleni” joined the project\, recognizing that it was time to start a public debate on this in Poland as well – not only on UBI itself\, but as part of a broader conversation: what social security system is best adapted to the needs and expectations of Polish society in times of great instability and turmoil? \nSpeakers:\nFrançois Denuit is an adviser to the Co-President of the Greens/EFA group in the EP Philippe Lamberts and scientific collaborator at the Université libre de Bruxelles. He wrote his PhD dissertation on the idea of a pan-European unconditional basic income. \nSusanne Rieger is a Co-President of the GEF Board of Directors and a board member of the Catalan Green foundation\, Fundació Nous Horitzons (FNH). Susanne has been working on topics such as political education\, capacity building\, as well as developing political and public discussions and communication structures on the European level for the past twenty years. \nWojciech Kłosowski is an expert\, researcher\, activist\, author\, lecturer and practitioner of social issues\, local governance and social policy of cities. Wojciech is a founding member of the Zieloni 2004 party (today: Partia Zieloni). \nModerator :  \nEwa Sufin-Jacquemart is the director of the Fundacja Strefa Zieleni\, a member of the GEF Board of Directors and coordinator of the Green Center of the Congress of Women. \nProgramme: \n18:00 – 19:30 \n\nWelcome\nPresentation by Susanne Rieger\nPresentation by François Denuit\nSummary and comments (in Polish) by Wojciech Kłosowski\nDiscussion\n\nPracticalities:\nThis is an open event\, aimed at an international audience. English-Polish translation will be provided. \nPlease use the following link to join the webinar (joining the webinar is preceded by registration). \nWhen joining the webinar\, you will have to complete a short registration form – so make sure to tune in early! \nIf you would like to read more about some of GEF’s existing work on UBI\, please refer to the following publications: \n\nBasic Social Security 2030 (published in January 2020)\nEuropean Green Perspectives on Basic Income (published in February 2019)\n\n\nThis project is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Fundacja Strefa Zieleni and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Growing out of Growth: A New Future after the Crisis (Webinar)
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nThe second webinar on digital technology in cities will explore how the current crisis is exposing the systemic shortcomings of our economies and impacting our urban structures. A discussion will be made on the position of technology and its role in shifting growth led urban strategies to more resilient\, socially inclusive\, and green cities. \nContext:\nAll over Europe\, so-called ‘smart cities’ are the testing grounds for new technologies that affect how we live\, how we organise our societies and what our ethical foundation is. These technologies often involve the use of big data and devices that can act with a degree of autonomy. The development of new technologies therefore cannot be left to engineers and managers; it requires public debate and democratic control. \nTo this end\, GEF developed\, with the support of its partners\, a Charter for the Smart City\, consisting of guiding principles that will make it easier for green European politicians and activists to assess and steer technological innovations in their cities. Many of the issues that the Charter deals with\, such as algorithmic discrimination\, automated facial recognition and smart mobility\, will rise in prominence in the coming years. \nIn 2020\, this transnational project is devoted to the dissemination of the Charter and its contents\, available in multiple languages\, through a series of events across Europe. \nProgramme: \n18:00-18:15 Introduction: Links of the corona crisis and the economy \n18:15-19:00 Smart cities as instruments to achieve priorities: case studies with speakers \nDiscussion: Redefining priorities of smart cities \nSpeakers:\nKim van Sparrentak\, Member of the European Parliament for GroenLinks (Greens/EFA) \nLisa Gutu\, former member of CDN’s Executive committee and Head of Business at Salt Edge \nRegistration:\nThis webinar will be taking place on the open source meeting platform Jitsi. No prior account or download is necessary. A link to join the meeting will be posted on the Facebook event page shortly before the start.

SUMMARY:The European Green Deal: Implications for human rights and social change. An opportunity to tackle energy poverty?
DESCRIPTION:About this event\nThis webinar is presented by the Green European Foundation and the Ariadne Network. \nDespite some (such as the Czech Prime Minister) attempting to use COVID-19 to ditch the European Green Deal\, it remains relevant\, and some even see the pandemic as a characteristic of the climate crisis. The EU remains committed to the deal\, and civil society is calling for it to be strengthened and used as a “greenprint” for the post-COVID-19 economy. \nThe European Green Deal is a significant step forward for the Commission as it resets its commitment to tackling climatic and environmental challenges and aims to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. The deal seeks to achieve this by modernising the economy\, decoupling economic growth from resource use\, and improving people’s health and quality of life; leaving no one behind. To be effective\, the transition must be just and inclusive\, paying particular attention to regions and workers facing the greatest changes. \nThe deal operates through a regulatory and legislative framework\, which includes European Climate Law\, European Industrial Strategy\, and incentives to encourage private sector investment. \nThis webinar will explore the extent to which human rights and social justice feature in the Green Deal and its legislative framework. It will also analyse how the Green Deal could influence foundations’ programmes of work\, particularly in terms of how the transition to renewables could be an opportunity to tackle energy poverty. Join this webinar to learn how foundations might support a just transition in Europe and ensure that no one is left behind. \nSpeakers:\n– Anna Cavazzini\, German MEP of the Alliance 90/The Greens\n– Renee Bruel Director\, Buildings\, European Climate Foundation\n– Clotilde Clark-Foulquier\, Housing Solutions Platform Coordinator & Project Manager\, European Federation of National Organisations Working with the Homeless (FEANTSA) \n\nModerator:\n– Dirk Holemans\, Co-President\, Green European Foundation Board and Coordinator\, Flemish think-tank Oikos \nThis is a closed event\, not open to the public.

SUMMARY:Hacking the Narratives of Smart Cities
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nIn the first of the two webinars on digital technology in cities\, young activists interested in digital and urban topics will get the opportunity to discuss the different narratives connected with smart cities. They will observe what stands behind the utopistic\, critical and realistic storytelling on technology in cities. This will be done through the exploration of smart cities from the perspectives of pop culture\, journalism and business\, referring to actors such as New York Times\, IBM\, and the different series such as Black Mirror. \nContext:\nAll over Europe\, so-called ‘smart cities’ are the testing grounds for new technologies that affect how we live\, how we organise our societies and what our ethical foundation is. These technologies often involve the use of big data and devices that can act with a degree of autonomy. No prior account or download is necessary. A link to join the meeting will be posted on the Facebook event page shortly before the start.

SUMMARY:Just Transition (Kickoff)
DESCRIPTION:About the Event:\nTo introduce the concept of Just Transition to a wider audience\, Oikos and the Green European Foundation invite Béla Galgóczi\, senior researcher at ETUI (European Trade Union Institute). In this online interview\, Béla will explain to us what Just Transition really means\, and which currents and recent developments there are. He will also give some concrete examples from the world of work. \nContext:\nThe Just Transition project has as its aim to inspire and inform citizens about the implications of a just transition to a highly sustainable economy\, which involves more than technical measures. We need a new economic system that cares for people and the planet\, in which all costs and benefits are fairly distributed. How do we sustainably transform our labour market? How do we make sure the transition to renewables is inclusive and equitable? These are some of the questions we try to answer. \nSpeakers:\nBéla Galgóczi\, ETUI (European Trade Union Institute) \nInterviewer: Dirk Holemans (Oikos) \nPracticalities:\nThis is an open webinar. Please register here to receive an event reminder and further details on how to join in. \n  \n— \nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Oikos Think Tank and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Peer-to-Peer Exchange Programme (Call for applications)
DESCRIPTION:About peer-to-peer exchange programme\nAt GEF\, we seek to encourage cross-border cooperation and exchanges and aim at bridging the gap between activism at the national level and the decisions that are being made at the European level by coordinating a lively network of Green foundations\, NGOs\, youth organisations and activists. \nIn our strategic meetings of June 2019 and January 2020\, our network has been involved in a participatory process of defining their greatest needs and role for GEF as a platform to discuss Europe’s shared challenges\, by bringing diverse actors together. \nIn this context\, a vision for GEF’s capacity building programme was developed\, and part of this mission is for GEF to become a hub for inspiration\, guidance and support for European\, national and regional green actors. \nThe proposed GEF Peer-to-Peer Exchange Programme is part of GEF’s capacity building programme and aims to provide a dedicated space for our network of Green foundations\, NGOs\, youth organisations and activists to engage in inspiring\, targeted interactions that will strengthen their work and ultimately their impact. \nThe GEF Peer-to-Peer Exchange Programme will: \n\nSupport the green network across Europe to mainstream discussions on European policies in national\, regional and local contexts and to co-create a common green vision for Europe.\nStrengthen GEF’s members’ and partners’ capacities to contribute to GEF’s pan-European work programme.\n\nApplicant’s eligibility\nThe GEF Peer-to-Peer Exchange Programme targets national green foundations and equivalent green organisations\, NGOs and activists that are members of the Green European Foundation or are partners in GEF decentralised projects to provide them the opportunity for mutual exchange and learning on topics or competences of their interest and in direct support to the work they undertake with the Green European Foundation. \nThe programme\nThe programme offers support from GEF for its members and partners to participate in a learning/capacity building exchange with another/other organisation(s). We envisage that all participating organisations will benefit from the mutual learning of such an exchange\, which can be on content-related topics\, as well as organisational issues\, such as how to motivate volunteers\, how to develop a media outreach campaign\, etc. \nDue to the current Covid-19 pandemic\, the programme is to be implemented online until further notice and submitted proposals should therefore be possible to implement through online formats\, such as webinars\, etc. The programme can later be transformed into a face-to-face scheme\, including study visits or job shadowing\, with corresponding travel reimbursement support by GEF. \nCriteria and eligibility\n\nAll GEF members as well as GEF partners who are currently partners in a GEF decentralised project can submit an application to participate in the programme.\nA learning exchange can take place between minimum 2 to 4 organisations. While more organisations can apply for one common exchange programme\, the focus is on ensuring that the needs of all organisations are fully taken into account.\nInterested organisations are asked to fill in a joint application\, elaborating on how the exchange will benefit the work the applicant organisations do with GEF in the context of decentralised projects\, as well as indicating how the exchange will strengthen the European dimension of GEF projects. The European dimension of the exchange can be ensured for instance by connecting the learning and sharing process to transnational projects. Another focus of the exchange could be a topic of relevance on the European level or a chosen European policy area.\nGEF partners can also apply in accordance to their needs without having found (a) suitable exchange partner(s) and ask GEF for support in finding peer organisations.\nApplicants agree to fulfil the reporting requirements for the Peer-to-Peer Exchange Programme by completing an evaluation and budgetary report within 30 days of completing the programme[1].\nPartners of selected applications agree to participate in a common kick off meeting online to formulate general objectives of the programme\, exchange on the different training sessions taking place as well as to address any possible open questions.\nOne partner can participate in maximum 2 exchanges per calendar year.\n\nFinancial conditions\n\nGEF will cover costs related to:\n\nhuman resources of maximum 2 working days of training sessions for all participating organisations;\ntravel\, accommodation and catering (nota bene! The exchanges are envisaged to take place online at least until 15 June 2020);\nmaterials necessary for implementing the exchange.\n\n\nReporting to GEF following a prior agreement on the budget and in line with the GEF Guidebook for Project Implementation.\nParticipating partners and members will submit a financial contribution to GEF of maximum 15% of the programme costs. Organisations with no revenue will have the possibility to provide smaller financial contributions to GEF\, which will be discussed and agreed on a case-by-case basis.\n\nHow to apply\n\nApplications can be submitted on an ongoing basis by filling in the application form online.\nApplications shall be submitted at least 1 month before the envisaged date for the exchange.\n\nSelection process\n\nPartners shall receive an answer to their application within 2 weeks of submitting it\, and the decision will be made with the involvement of GEF staff and dedicated Board members who are following GEF’s capacity-building programme development.\n\nFor any questions\, please get in touch with mariana.batista@gef.eu. \n

SUMMARY:Public values in smart grids (Webinar)
DESCRIPTION:About this webinar\nA fully renewable electricity system is largely powered by wind and solar. These are intermittent energy sources. How do we keep supply and demand in balance? Data and artificial intelligence will play a major role in this balancing act. Smart electricity grids help adjusting supply and demand\, using data on the forecasted weather\, the available power storage and conversion capacity\, and the willingness of companies and households to make their electricity consumption dependent on supply and price. \nA smart grid is not necessarily fair\, transparent\, and privacy-friendly. It doesn’t necessarily allow for human control over algorithms and democratic participation.  How can we integrate these public values into the design of smart grids\, from local microgrids to centralised macrogrids? \nThe Green European Foundation\, Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks\, and Oikos will try to find answers to this question in a webinar. It will gather (local) politicians\, practitioners\, activists and members of energy cooperatives from various European countries\, in a coronavirus-proof way. \nThe webinar will start with two presentations: \nFabian Reetz (100 prozent erneuerbar stiftung\, Berlin) will explain the basics of a smart electricity grid and its importance for speeding up the transition towards a 100% renewable energy system. \nChristine Milchram (Delft University of Technology) will speak about smart grids and energy justice. How can fairness\, data privacy and other public values be integrated into smart grids? \nThe first comments to the presentations will be delivered by Yvonne van Sark\, president of homeowner’s association Schoon Schip\, which runs a smart microgrid in Amsterdam. \nThe webinar will be facilitated by Dirk Holemans (Oikos). \nThis is a joint event of the GEF projects A Charter for the Smart City and Cities as Places of Hope. \nTimetable\n14:00  Welcome by Dirk Holemans \n14:15  Presentation on smart grids and the energy transition by Fabian Reetz \n14.35  Q&A \n14:50  Short break \n15:00  Presentation on smart grids and energy justice by Christine Milchram \n15:20  First comments by Yvonne van Sark \n15:25  Q&A \n15:40  Group discussion \n16:00 Closing words by Dirk Holemans \nLanguage\nThe webinar will be conducted in English. \nPlatform\nWe will use the Zoom video conferencing platform. It is recommended to join the webinar via a PC. You don’t need to install additional software. However\, for the best user experience and full participation features\, we recommend to install the Zoom Desktop App\, which is free. \nRegistration\nRequired. SUMMARY:It's Not Just a Transition: Youth in Cities (Postponed)
DESCRIPTION:We’re hosting an essential discussion on the role of Universal Basic Income in the just transition towards a carbon-neutral society\, with focus on how this could help young people . \nGEF\, together with FYEG is holding a workshop in Barcelona\, entitled ‘It’s Not Just a Transition: Youth in Cities’. The workshop will take place in two parts: \n\nSocial justice perspective from each track implemented during the event (transport\, urban development\, energy). For each track\, a vision for the future is previously imagined. In this session we link this vision to the vision for a more just city for the youth.\nDiscussion on the role of UBI in the transition towards a carbon-neutral society\, with focus on how this could help young people (1) realize their dreams/their vision for the future and (2) become more politically active. We will look into the B-Mincome experiment done in Barcelona.\n\nThe seminar kicks-off our 6-partner project ‘Change of Mindset – Civil Society dialogue around UBI\, Social Justice and Climate impact‘\, which aims to spark a stronger civil society dialogue to bring about the change of mindset needed to raise acceptance of universal basic income among the public and to deepen the debate on our conceptions of productivity and work. \nCan’t attend the event? SUMMARY:Citizen scoring – towards a surveillance state for the poor? (Webinar)
DESCRIPTION:About this webinar\nWhat’s your opinion on ‘citizen scoring’? Big data analytics is gaining traction among local and national governments. By feeding large swaths of personal data into algorithms\, they try to predict which social benefit recipients are most likely to commit fraud or which children are most at risk of abuse or neglect\, for instance. Does the ‘scoring’ of citizens by algorithms boost government efficiency or is it a threat to privacy\, social justice and the transparency of government? Which legal restrictions apply to citizen scoring and which ethical boundaries should we set? \nThe Green European Foundation and Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks will try to find answers to these questions in a webinar. It will gather people who are active in (local) politics from various European countries\, in a coronavirus-proof way. \nThe webinar will start with three presentations: \nRichard Wouters (Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks\, NL) will introduce the Charter for the Smart City that the Green European Foundation published in 2019. The Charter contains the warning that the use of big data to combat benefit fraud may lead to ‘class injustice’. \nLina Dencik (co-director of the Data Justice Lab\, Cardiff School of Journalism\, UK) will present the results of an extensive investigation into the use of citizen scoring by local authorities and police forces in the UK. \nRonald Huissen (Bij Voorbaat Verdacht\, NL) will explain the ground-breaking verdict against the Dutch fraud detection algorithm SyRI. In February\, a court ordered the immediate halt of SyRI because it violated the right to privacy. Huissen represents the NGO coalition which filed the lawsuit against SyRI. \nThe first comments to the presentations will be delivered by Kathalijne Buitenweg (MP for GroenLinks\, NL) and Martin Fodor (local councillor for the Green Party in Bristol\, UK; rapporteur on smart cities for the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe). \nThe webinar will be facilitated by Carlotta Weber (Green European Foundation). \nTimetable\n14:00 Welcome by Carlotta Weber \n14:20 Presentation of the Charter for the Smart City by Richard Wouters \n14:25 Presentation on citizen scoring in the UK by Lina Dencik \n14:45 First comments by Martin Fodor \n14:50 Q&A \n15:05 Presentation on the SyRI court case in NL by Ronald Huissen \n15:25 First comments by Kathalijne Buitenweg \n15:30 Q&A \n15:45 Break \n15:55 Group discussion \n16:55 Closing words by Carlotta Weber \nLanguage\nThe webinar will be conducted in English. \nPlatform\nWe will use the Zoom video conferencing platform. It is recommend to join the webinar via a PC. You don’t need to install additional software. However\, for the best user experience and full participation features\, we recommend to install the Zoom Desktop App\, which is for free. \nRegistration\nRequired.
