DESCRIPTION:About the event:\nGEF is hosting a festive launch event in Sofia to spotlight the Bulgarian edition of our publication “Geopolitics of a Post-Growth Europe.” This will be followed by an expert roundtable delving deeper into the policy dilemmas and potential synergies of Europe’s ecological and geopolitical security. SUMMARY:Strengthening Participation in the Energy Transition: Five action areas for the new EU policy cycle (Brussels)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nDespite the surge in support for right and far-right parties in the European elections\, polls show that European citizens continue to see climate as a top priority for the EU.  The transition to renewables can bring energy security and cheaper bills whilst being the only credible response to the climate crisis. But to be a success\, the benefits need to reach everyone. DESCRIPTION:About the event:\nDisinformation\, especially surrounding climate change\, is on the rise across Europe. It undermines public trust\, stalls urgent climate actions\, and jeopardizes democratic processes fundamental to the European Union. This event will examine how false narratives\, notably around climate\, are weaponized to divide societies\, foster Euroscepticism\, and create mistrust in institutions. Targeted at individuals interested in democracy\, climate policy\, and social justice\, this dialogue aims to foster a comprehensive discussion between experts from diverse fields. The format will be a panel discussion with hybrid participation to maximize engagement\, with a goal of identifying strategies to combat disinformation and protect both the environment and democratic values central to the EU. \nProject background:\nGEF’s Green Red Dialogues\, organised with the support of Fundació Nous Horitzons\, aim to tackle pressing issues of our time and the challenges Europe faces with an explicit social and green lens. DESCRIPTION:About the event:\nThe term polycrisis has become a central feature of the European public debate. From pandemic and supply chain disruptions to war\, cost-of-living\, and climate breakdown\, today’s compounding crises feed insecurity\, instability\, and distrust\, with significant repercussions for EU integration and democracy. This is felt particularly acutely on Europe’s Eastern flank. \nBy discussing and connecting (in)security in all its facets – including social\, ecological\, and geopolitical – this event aims to confront the crisis cascades with equally multiplying solutions. What are the (green) tools and visions that can bolster security and resilience? What does crisis preparedness look like in practice\, at local\, national\, and European level? DESCRIPTION:About the event:\nWith a mix of panels\, workshops\, performances\, and more\, Ecopolis fosters cross-border and multi-lingual dialogues on the ecological challenges of our time. The 2024 edition is entitled “Hope Needs Action” and seeks to turn climate concerns into commitment. Featuring a wide range of authors\, scientists\, academics\, practitioners\, activists\, artists\, and policymakers\, this event will answer to the simultaneous need for deep reflection and collective action to ensure a truly just transition in Europe and the world. \nTo this end\, Ecopolis aims specifically to bring together different movements and thereby contribute to a flourishing and diverse European public space – fostering connections between the ecological movement\, fights for social justice\, decolonisation and anti-racism initiatives\, feminist activism\, and more. This year\, GEF will contribute by hosting a stream of sessions touching on some of our core interests\, including energy security\, a post-growth Europe\, and democratic participation. \n\nProject background:\nEcopolis is an annual meeting point for anyone concerned about a fair and sustainable future. DESCRIPTION:About the event:\nThe Green Academy is a discussion and dialogue platform\, established in 2010 as a space for advanced learning in political ecology. The 9th edition of Green Academy is entitled ”Stay with the Trouble\,” and will feature a varied programme of keynotes\, panels\, workshops\, and social activities. As part of the programme\, GEF is hosting a series of Green Talks spotlighting our latest work on the wellbeing economy\, adaptation\, and building a resilient Europe beyond growth. \n\nProject background:\nIf trends continue\, the summer of 2024 is likely to be the hottest yet\, with the daily reality of the climate crisis coming into even sharper focus for ever more citizens. Yet unlike five years ago\, climate and biodiversity do not dominate the political headlines or European voter priorities\, whether due to disillusionment\, disinformation\, or competing concerns like cost-of-living and (in)security. \nMore than ever\, it is important to demonstrate how social and ecological justice go hand in hand\, and to foster the bottom-up democracy to make that happen. Concepts and ideas like post-growth\, the commons\, and citizen assemblies may hold some of the answers\, but need the right narratives and policy grounding to truly pierce the mainstream European debate. GEF has supported this endeavour for a long time\, including as a partner of the 2023 Beyond Growth Conference in the European Parliament and the International Degrowth Conference that took place in Zagreb that same year. \nAs we get ready to enter a new EU cycle\, with a reshuffled parliament and Commission\, it is crucial to keep the momentum going and ensure that wellbeing and a prosperous Europe beyond growth remain on the agenda. DESCRIPTION:About the event:\nDespite the ideals and efforts of several generations to bring lasting peace to Europe and the world\, armed conflict and escalation remain a daily presence in the lives of many young Europeans – whether in their direct lived experience\, their fears for the future\, or their contacts and solidarity with peers elsewhere. This includes not just Russia’s invasion of Ukraine\, but also violence in the South Caucasus and Gaza\, among others. While the Green movement is rooted in non-violence and pacifism\, these terms are at times vaguely defined and understood within and outside the Green movement. It argues that the related systems are currently in a twin crisis and advocate for integrated political solutions. \nKey proposals to achieve this goal are put forward in the Brief. They include extending the EU’s Do No Harm principle to encompass both human and environmental care\, fostering a green care sector\, implementing ecological and progressive tax reforms\, establishing a People’s Sovereignty Fund and creating a new Commission Vice-Presidency for Caring Societies. These initiatives aim to bridge policy silos\, promote sustainability\, and ensure social equity\, thus fostering a resilient and inclusive European society. The concept of a Green Caring Society also has significant international implications. The interconnected nature of both the ecological crisis and public health risks necessitates global cooperation. The EU must minimize the negative impacts of its (care) systems on the rest of the world while maximizing positive outcomes through mutually beneficial partnerships. Supporting a global green care strategy and advocating for the rights of future generations and nature are essential components of this effort. \nA Green Caring Society can bring the EU closer to its citizens and enhance overall well-being while respecting the planet’s boundaries. DESCRIPTION:About the event\nDo we really want to continue on the path of exponential growth and increasing consumerism? If we do\, a major global catastrophe is inevitable. Rapid change is needed at all levels: global\, European\, national\, regional\, and local.While the European Green Deal has provided a much-needed roadmap at the EU level\, its implementation\, particularly the social dimension\, has fallen short of many greens’ hopes and expectations. More worryingly\, the progress made over the past five years is now under threat from growing conservative and far-right voices in the European Parliament and certain national governments. Amid these forces of delay and distraction\, it is crucial to equip European citizens with the tools to continue fighting for a European Green Deal for All. \nPoland “returned to the European Union” thanks to the extraordinary electoral mobilisation of Polish society\, especially women and young people. However\, with this new progressive coalition in power\, it is crucial for progressive stakeholders to strengthen their bonds to ensure a lasting impact on society. Additionally\, they must ensure that the new coalition remains true to the principles for which they were elected. \n\n\n\n\nThis one-day GEF summer school in Poland aims to connect the green movement\, NGOs\, activists\, and other relevant stakeholders. The program will cover topics such as just energy transition\, alternative models like doughnut cities and the wellbeing economy\, and the future of the European Green Deal (EGD). \nSessions will explore the connections between the ecological and social dimensions of the doughnut model\, with a backdrop of the European Union’s landscape following the 2024 elections\, especially concerning the fate of the EGD. DESCRIPTION:About the event \nThe term “degrowth” often causes panic among mainstream opinion makers and many economists in Europe. Economic growth is the lubricant of capitalism. We are told that if the economy is growing\, all is well. But what do we mean by growth? Should everything keep growing endlessly? The ecological crisis shows that infinite growth on a finite planet is impossible. Meanwhile\, the current economic system fails to secure livelihoods and deepens inequalities. There is an alternative to this self-destructive system: an economy of enough\, which would provide for everyone’s basic needs while tackling greed and overconsumption. \n The EU has the potential to lead the ecological transition. Although the Green Deal was a significant step forward\, it remains locked within a growth-addicted economy with a core principle of competition in a single market\, and it does not sufficiently address social inequality. We need to imagine a different European economy\, rooted in a new paradigm\, before we can build it. \nThis is why the Green European Foundation is launching “Enough: Thriving Societies Beyond Growth”. Written by Dirk Holemans\, Lara Ferrante\, and Elze Vermaas\, this essay explores how societies can thrive without depending on economic growth. It presents a compelling vision of fewer private jets\, less inequality\, fewer burnouts\, and reduced waste\, alongside more quality of life\, more time for each other\, more sustainable products\, and a healthier planet. In other words\, a good life for everyone within the planet’s limits. DESCRIPTION:About the event\nEuropean demand for materials has impacts all over the world. Our consumption\, far greater than the global average\, contributes to the destruction of ecosystems near and far. For some materials and goods\, we depend on autocratic regimes. So there is an ecological and a geopolitical need to reduce our resource consumption. To do so\, should we abandon the pursuit of economic growth\, as advocated by the degrowth movement? Could we still meet everyone’s needs and grow our well-being?  \nMany of the materials that we use\, including for the energy transition\, are extracted in the Global South. There\, mining often comes at the expense of the environment\, nature and local communities. At the same time\, millions of people depend on mining for their livelihoods. Can the EU assist developing countries in earning more with less mining? Can we break with neo-colonial exploitation and build new partnerships with the Global South? After all\, we need partners in a time of mounting geopolitical conflicts and a deepening ecological crisis.  \nThe questions we discuss in this seminar are inspired by GEF’s report Geopolitics of a Post-Growth Europe and a (forthcoming) report by the Dutch Young Climate Movement on what young people need to live sustainably. DESCRIPTION:About the event\nOn Monday\, 19 February\, the Green European Foundation (GEF)\, Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung European Union\, Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS)\, and Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) will present the policy study “Women CSO Leaders for Systemic Change – How to Support Feminist Leadership in Europe”. \nThis policy study represents the first-ever study of its kind\, taking stock of the last decade’s progress and identifying remaining barriers and new opportunities for women civil society organisation (CSO) leaders in achieving systemic change in Europe.  The co-authors will showcase their research from nearly 150 comprehensive interviews with women CSO leaders. DESCRIPTION:About the event\nGEF’s Green European Horizons Academy aims to expand the imaginarium of the green movement towards an alternative livable future equally across Europe and beyond. After the first two successful Academies\, (1) The Good Story (focused on green narratives) and (2) The Good Collective (dealt with structures for resilient green organisations)\, with this Green European Horizons Academy: Good for All\, the organisers wish to address raising extractivist and neocolonial practices being enacted inside the territory of the EU\, in member and candidate EU countries\, and outside the borders of the EU\, especially in the light of the green energy transition and the ambitious goals of carbon neutrality. \n\n\nWhat to expect \n\n\n\nUnder the noble goal of climate change mitigation\, the mainstream decarbonisation agenda demands not just cuts in the use of old materials but also the exponential growth of demand for new ones. Thus far\, it is blatantly evident that exploiting natural resources does not mean good for everyone. Neither profit nor pollution is evenly distributed worldwide and locally. With the desire to find answers to the questions of who earns and who pays with health\, dependency\, and poverty and how to achieve well-being for all while avoiding extractivist practices\, we hope to contribute to both the domestic and the international networks of green actors by forging new ties and alliances and setting the basis for further discussion on EU’s policies regarding renewable energy. \nIn this Academy\, we aim to disseminate both academic insights and activist perspectives on extractivism. Our discussions will span its historical roots\, present-day practices\, role in the global economy\, and impact on international politics. We will delve into the conceptual framework of extractivism\, exploring its potential and constraints\, and examining its intersections with neocolonialism and exploitation. However\, our primary emphasis will be on the escalating prevalence of contemporary extractivism\, highlighting the environmental risks and harm it poses\, as well as the grassroots efforts and local struggles against its detrimental effects. \n\nContext \n\n\n\nPositioned as an attractive prospect for foreign multinational companies and trade ministries\, the Western Balkan countries are often marketed as a region with “low earnings and low environmental standards.” Unfortunately\, this portrayal puts at risk the remaining protected nature areas\, drinking water resources\, and the potential for sustainable and organic agriculture. The looming threat comes from an escalating “mining frenzy” and unsustainable hydropower projects\, poised to compromise various locations. Concurrently\, a robust grassroots movement has emerged over the past decade\, opposing extractivism in its various forms. Your presence and expertise could significantly benefit this movement. Public transport\, cycling and walking are at the heart of a model that guarantees the right to sustainable mobility. \nThe Barcelona metropolitan area\, with its population exceeding 3.5 million inhabitants\, is a paradigmatic case in this debate\, as it is an area that risks being sanctioned by the EU due to its poor air quality. \nWithin this context\, what are the examples of good and bad practices of mobility? What are the challenges that lie ahead? SUMMARY:Moving to the Future: Reimagining Urban Mobility (Lisbon)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThe present ecological crisis impels us to seek a change in the way we move\, leading to increased efforts towards the decarbonisation of mobility. A mix of new and old solutions are key to change the urban mobility panorama\, namely the electrification and the expansion of public transportation networks\, and the creation of walking or cycling infrastructure to make active mobility attractive and pleasant. This change can also be seen as an opportunity to improve people’s lives by decreasing commuting time\, improving the air quality\, reducing noise\, and promoting an active lifestyle.  \nIn a simple sentence\, there is a need to shift the cities’ focus from cars to people. To achieve this\, a new mindset that prioritises public transportation is needed\, or “the social ideology of the motorcar”\, as the philosopher André Gorz named it back in 1973.  \nSustainable mobility must not only encompass ecological considerations\, but also needs to include an intersectional approach which takes gender and accessibility dimensions into account. SUMMARY:New Mobility: Economy and Employment
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThe decarbonisation of mobility is one of the great challenges of the European Union. The transformation it entails is complex and not without its difficulties\, but it can be an opportunity to reactivate the economy and generate employment. The latter is a particularly relevant aspect in maintaining social stability\, especially at a time when populism and the extreme right are on the rise in Europe. \nIn this event\, we seek to analyse the challenges and opportunities of zero-emission mobility in terms of the economy and employment in Spain\, paying special attention to the bicycle sector from a gender perspective. \nThe event is a roundtable open to all those interested in mobility\, especially members of organisations and platforms working on the issue\, government officials\, politicians\, academia\, and civil society associations. SUMMARY:Geopolitics of Degrowth in a Conflicted Europe - Global South’s Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nGreen policies that respect planetary boundaries and allow the Global South to develop seem incompatible with unlimited economic growth within the EU. We need a realistic scenario for a future in which we consume more sparingly but live better together.  \nCould a post-growth EU that considerably reduces its ecological footprint with the purpose of freeing up natural resources find partners in the Global South? What should these partnerships entail? \nTo tackle this issue\, the Green European Foundation with the support of BlueLink is organising a webinar focusing on the Global South. Participants will have the opportunity to review and reflect upon the outcomes from expert meetings\, research and interviews\, held across Europe during 2023.  \nWe invite researchers\, activists and policy makers – particularly from the Global South  – with an interest in green policies and geopolitics to present perspectives\, experiences\, analytical or activity reports and to engage in a discussion around the following questions: \n\nHow would it be possible to optimize the possibilities that degrowth offers\, including for democratic flourishing and a safer Europe and world?\nCould a post-growth EU considerably reduce its environmental footprint with the express purpose of freeing up natural resources for the Global South?\nCan the EU hope for strategic partnerships with (democratic) Global South countries\, which are vital for greater security and legitimacy?\nCould a post-growth EU still make a larger contribution to poverty reduction\, global public goods\, tax justice\, legal migration routes\, international climate finance\, and compensation for climate loss and damage?\nCould the older EU members come to terms with their colonial pasts\, and on what conditions? How important is this for the Global South?\nWill exports from Global South suffer if a post-growth EU  reduces its overconsumption of global resources?\nHow much EU’s partnership with the Global South depend on technology transfer?\nWhat role of technology beyond trade\, development\, and climate: is it intertwined with geopolitics?\n\nNot every question has a definitive answer and we promote creativity\, analytical thinking\, and a fresh approaches to the challenge. \n  \nProject Background\nThis event is part of GEF’s project Geopolitics of a Post-Growth Europe\, which explores the tensions between degrowth/post-growth and geopolitics. The project aims to ignite a conversation between critics of economic growth and progressive thinkers on foreign and security policy\, who now often operate in separate circuits.
