DESCRIPTION:  \nAbout the event\nThis event will feature the launch of two brand-new GEF publications. We will discuss their content with the authors alongside two expert panels\, leaving  ample time for questions and networking.   \nLAUNCH: Credible yet Critical? Green Approaches to Defence (upcoming) – with GRIP \nIn a shifting geopolitical landscape\, Greens are grappling with the interplay between their traditional pacifist roots and the post-February 2022 security challenges. This report delves into their evolving stances on key defence issues\, from EU military cooperation to disarmament\, offering insights into the varied approaches adopted by Green parties from eight EU countries. Expert viewpoints featured throughout provide further feedback and inputs as to what a Green defence policy could (or should) look like. As Europe navigates turbulent waters\, the report calls for renewed commitment to progressive and principled approaches to security and defence. \nLAUNCH: Geopolitics of a Post-Growth Europe \nIt is unlikely that we will be able to defuse the climate time bomb\, let alone other ecological threats\, as long as our economy continues to grow. But what would the end of economic growth mean for geopolitics? Could a European Union that is the first to embrace post-growth still be a global actor? Would it be able to defend itself\, its allies\, democracy\, human rights\, and the international rule of law at a time when aggressive autocracies are invading or threatening their democratic neighbours? SUMMARY:EGAT Study Trip 2024
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nDuring this three-day study trip\, participants will have the chance to explore various topics such as political ecology\, lobbying and just transition in Brussels through engaging with professionals\, politicians\, NGOs and other activists operating in and around the European institutions\, as well as with each other. \nWith a range of formal and non-formal training methods\, including interactive workshops\, the trip will be a valuable learning experience for young activists brought together by Green values and a motivation to enact change. \nProject background\nThe European Green Activists Training (EGAT) consists of training sessions for young Green activists in various phases. These include the completion of the online course EU for Beginners\, the participation in national training sessions in their respective countries on domestic politics\, as well as on European politics and institutions. SUMMARY:Green European Horizons Academy: Good for All (Belgrade)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nGEF’s Green European Horizons Academy aims to expand the imaginarium of the green movement towards an alternative livable future equally across Europe and beyond. After the first two successful Academies\, (1) The Good Story (focused on green narratives) and (2) The Good Collective (dealt with structures for resilient green organisations)\, with this Green European Horizons Academy: Good for All\, the organisers wish to address raising extractivist and neocolonial practices being enacted inside the territory of the EU\, in member and candidate EU countries\, and outside the borders of the EU\, especially in the light of the green energy transition and the ambitious goals of carbon neutrality. \n\n\nWhat to expect \n\n\n\nUnder the noble goal of climate change mitigation\, the mainstream decarbonisation agenda demands not just cuts in the use of old materials but also the exponential growth of demand for new ones. Thus far\, it is blatantly evident that exploiting natural resources does not mean good for everyone. Neither profit nor pollution is evenly distributed worldwide and locally. With the desire to find answers to the questions of who earns and who pays with health\, dependency\, and poverty and how to achieve well-being for all while avoiding extractivist practices\, we hope to contribute to both the domestic and the international networks of green actors by forging new ties and alliances and setting the basis for further discussion on EU’s policies regarding renewable energy. \nIn this Academy\, we aim to disseminate both academic insights and activist perspectives on extractivism. Our discussions will span its historical roots\, present-day practices\, role in the global economy\, and impact on international politics. We will delve into the conceptual framework of extractivism\, exploring its potential and constraints\, and examining its intersections with neocolonialism and exploitation. However\, our primary emphasis will be on the escalating prevalence of contemporary extractivism\, highlighting the environmental risks and harm it poses\, as well as the grassroots efforts and local struggles against its detrimental effects. \n\nContext \n\n\n\nPositioned as an attractive prospect for foreign multinational companies and trade ministries\, the Western Balkan countries are often marketed as a region with “low earnings and low environmental standards.” Unfortunately\, this portrayal puts at risk the remaining protected nature areas\, drinking water resources\, and the potential for sustainable and organic agriculture. The looming threat comes from an escalating “mining frenzy” and unsustainable hydropower projects\, poised to compromise various locations. Concurrently\, a robust grassroots movement has emerged over the past decade\, opposing extractivism in its various forms. Your presence and expertise could significantly benefit this movement. SUMMARY:Moving to the Future: Reimagining Urban Mobility (Lisbon)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThe present ecological crisis impels us to seek a change in the way we move\, leading to increased efforts towards the decarbonisation of mobility. A mix of new and old solutions are key to change the urban mobility panorama\, namely the electrification and the expansion of public transportation networks\, and the creation of walking or cycling infrastructure to make active mobility attractive and pleasant. This change can also be seen as an opportunity to improve people’s lives by decreasing commuting time\, improving the air quality\, reducing noise\, and promoting an active lifestyle.  \nIn a simple sentence\, there is a need to shift the cities’ focus from cars to people. To achieve this\, a new mindset that prioritises public transportation is needed\, or “the social ideology of the motorcar”\, as the philosopher André Gorz named it back in 1973.  \nSustainable mobility must not only encompass ecological considerations\, but also needs to include an intersectional approach which takes gender and accessibility dimensions into account. We need a realistic scenario for a future in which we consume more sparingly but live better together.  \nCould a post-growth EU that considerably reduces its ecological footprint with the purpose of freeing up natural resources find partners in the Global South? What should these partnerships entail? \nTo tackle this issue\, the Green European Foundation with the support of BlueLink is organising a webinar focusing on the Global South. This session will bring together voices and expertise from politics and civil society to lay bare the flaws and limitations of the current Green Deal and propose the pathways we need to explore to make a Green Deal worthy of its name. \nThe Green Deal is a comprehensive progressive plan to combat the climate disaster while eliminating socio-economic inequalities in the country. The plan is a strategic framework for collective action towards transforming the functioning of the economic and energy system by creating thousands of low-carbon jobs for a better life for all living beings in harmony with nature. The same principles that will apply to EU member states by European Green Deal are mirrored in the region by the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans. \nIn the Green Agenda document regarding the circular economy\, the countries of the Western Balkans will strive to contribute to the protection of the environment and the minimization of the amount of waste generated in the region\, while with a large set of activities to be committed to the depollution of the air\, water and soil. \nIn proposing this project as a transnational project\, we see a huge importance not only in empowering citizens to engage with topics of our interest (climate\, energy\, water\, biodiversity\, health)\, but also in strengthening linkages between the Greens across Europe and engaged citizens\, with the purpose of making them more relevant\, inclusive and connected with social groups and movements. \nGuests and experts from academic and practical backgrounds will share their expertise with the participants and enable an exchange of ideas and concepts. \nOn this event we will discuss with experts\, institutions\, NGOs and activists on the perspectives of the Green Agenda for the WB. \n  \nProject background\nThis event is part of the Green European Foundation’s project Green deal and Beyond. DESCRIPTION:About\nMobility plays a crucial role in shaping the quality of people’s lives by influencing multiple aspects. To name a few examples\, it determines which jobs people can apply to\, how often they can see relatives and friends\, and the amount of free time they have. It can also amplify prejudice and inequality\, namely those regarding gender\, race and others. The way people move has a huge impact on the environment that should always be taken into consideration. \nWith both wonderful but challenging geography\, the Azores is a good place to discuss these problems as there is much work to be done towards sustainable mobility that works for all. Far from mainland Portugal\, travelling to or from Azores is not affordable to everyone’s pockets; there are inequalities between the islands in the archipelago\, with some having much better connections than others. In this debate\, we seek to address the pressing issues connected to mobility in the ultra-periphery with multiple analytical and geographical lenses. We will bring together diverse perspectives to analyse the challenges and opportunities for mobility on island and in ultra-peripheral contexts\, the impacts of tourism on mobility and how mobility is also a gender issue. SUMMARY:How Can Greens and Progressives Influence NATO? (Örebro)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nGreen and progressive parties across Europe have historically held a sceptical view towards NATO\, with many deeming such a military alliance incompatible with disarmament and a shift towards non-military solutions to international conflicts.   \nYet with Sweden next in line to join NATO\, there is a need to reckon with and respond to the current political reality\, without losing track of the underlying values that guide our peace and security stances.  \nTo contribute to this crucial European debate\, GEF commissioned a report\, with the support of Cogito\, that maps out stances towards NATO across Europe\, but more importantly explores how greens and progressives can influence NATO in line with their own visions and priorities.    \nParticipants at this seminar will receive copies of the working paper and discuss its findings\, guided by insights and reactions from our expert panel.  \n\nProject background\nWith a focus on the Eastern flank of Europe\, the 2022-2023 debates series seeks to enrich green and political ecology discourse. Because ecological challenges know no national or linguistic borders\, Ecopolis is diverse\, international and interactive. Ecopolis invites Belgian and international authors to debate the transition towards a socio-ecological society. Inspiring books\, documentaries and debates between writers\, academics and civil society thinkers about ecology\, economy and society are at the heart of Ecopolis \n\n\nThis year the festival brings together different actors from the political\, cultural and social environment to discuss this years focus topic\, cooperation for a fair – fairer future as core value. This means tackling the conflicts rooted by competition as basic organisational principle on the individual and economic level. DESCRIPTION:About\nThe European Green Deal (EGD) is a comprehensive plan to combat the climate crisis while eliminating socio-economic inequalities. This package of policy initiatives aims to transform our economic and energy system through collective action. \nThe Green Agenda for the Western Balkans reflects the same principles as the EGD for EU member states: In line with the EGD measures\, Western Balkans countries will work towards environmental protection\, waste reduction\, and the decontamination of air\, water\, and soil.  In this event\, we will discuss with experts\, NGOs and activists the perspectives of the development of the Green Agenda in the Western Balkans. \n  \nProject background\nThis event is part of the Green European Foundation’s project Green deal and Beyond. The first focus of this project is based on proposals of the green family to integrate ambitiously the social dimension\, so to work on a ‘Just Green Deal’. DESCRIPTION:  \nAbout the event\nThe European Forum is a unique space for the left\, greens and progressives to come together. This event allows like-minded political foundations to organise debates and discussions on key social and green topics. Within this context and in collaboration with Transform! Europe and FEPS\, GEF is organising two workshops on 11 November. \nGEF’s role in the European Forum will draw from our Knowledge Community: the Future of the EU’s Energy Project and our work on Post- and Degrowth. \n  \nProgramme\n9:30-11:30 The Role of the State   \nForging a socio-ecological welfare state defined by wellbeing within planetary boundaries could be the chance to face the polycrisis. Indeed\, our welfare states should ensure universal access to high-quality essential services such as clean\, affordable and energy-efficient housing and mobility\, as well as strengthened social protection systems that mitigate the devastating consequences of climate change and environmental degradation. A new socio-ecological state would have a responsibility in enabling policy frameworks so citizens everywhere can take into their stride the new challenges brought about by digital breakthroughs and the climate crisis. By implementing social policies that tackle socio-economic inequalities\, reduce our carbon emissions and limit our environmental impact\, socio-ecological welfare states stand the chance to improve people’s quality of life and strengthen their resilience to shocks.  \n  \n12:00-14:00 The Climate Dimension of the Future of the EU’s Energy Project \nThe current EU energy framework showed its weaknesses over the past couple of years – amidst crises. These uncovered problems with fossil fuel resource dependency\, as well as with dependences on single countries as such. They showed the missing links between EU energy policy and security/geopolitics. The polycrisis also showed the lack of social safeguards and consideration in the EU and MS energy policy\, it showed that the democracy dimension has been too much underlit\, and above all – it clearly showed that\, if the EU had doubled down on its clean energy transition a decade earlier\, it would have been much more resilient to what it is experiencing today.  Mitigating and adapting to climate change is in other words not solely extremely important in terms of avoiding climate damage and emergency\, but also has positive spillover effects on energy security\, and if done rightly on the social and democratic dimension of energy. So why isn’t it going faster? SUMMARY:How Can Greens and Progressives Influence NATO?
DESCRIPTION:About the event: \nGreen and progressive parties across Europe have historically held a sceptical view towards NATO\, with many deeming such a military alliance incompatible with disarmament and a shift towards non-military solutions to international conflicts.   \nThe Russian war of aggression against Ukraine shifted some of these stances\, prompting extensive internal and external debates within the green movement\, particularly in Western and Northern Europe. These debates have cast a light on the desperate need for a green and progressive policy path within security and defence issues\, and revealed gaps that exist within green and progressive parties’ positions on military defence.   \nTo contribute to this crucial European debate\, GEF commissioned a report with the support of Cogito that maps out stances towards NATO across Europe\, explores how Greens and progressives can influence NATO\, and asks specific questions around topics like nuclear disarmament or focusing on European defence cooperation instead.   \nThis webinar will present some key findings of the working paper\, and discuss these questions further with a panel of interviewees.    \nProject background: \nWith a focus on the Eastern flank of Europe\, the 2022-2023 debates series seeks to enrich green and political ecology discourse. The series aim to provide spaces to hear the voices of green actors\, peace and security experts\, as well as partners from different regions.
