SUMMARY:Making Basic Income a European Reality (Tampere)
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nThe long lived dream of a basic income has gained relevance in Europe in the last few years. Changing working life and an uncertain economy has sparked the need for social security reforms in many countries. The Finnish basic income study has received world wide coverage. The goals have long been established but how do countries move forward to make it actually happen? Is a European BI possible? Should we approach BI incrementally? \nIn this seminar\, taking place at the 30th European Green Party Council\, guest speakers will discuss the status of basic income developments in different countries and outline paths to make the utopia a reality. Both national and Europe-wide points of view will be discussed. Her research interests include the design\, implementation and impact of social policy and comparative research on family policy\, social security and employment policy\, with particular reference to gender and changing family patterns. Her current research examines the impact of Universal Credit on couples\, focusing on labour market decisions and family budgeting. \nKim Evangelista is a policy advisor for the Belgian Green party (Ecolo). He is in charge of economic\, social and fiscal policies. He worked on a concrete Basic Income proposition included in the political program of the party for the May 2019 election. He studied economics and political sciences\, and was later a researcher in applied economics. He worked in both the private and public sector \nLukas Korpelainen is a research coordinator at the Finnish Green think tank Visio. Earlier this year he wrote a report on improving the basic social security system in Finland. The work includes a new model for a basic income combined with means-tested benefits and a realistic first step with economic simulations. He has also helped the Finnish Green party develop its social security policies. \nJamie Cooke is the head of The RSA Scotland and leads on the development of the RSA’s activity in Scotland\, through innovative partnerships\, projects and programmes. He is also a leading advocate\, writer\, and speaker on the subject of basic income. He sits on the Executive Committee of Basic Income Earth Network (BIEN) and on the Board of Citizens’ Basic Income Network Scotland (CBINS). \n\nThis seminar is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of the Finnish Green think tank Visio.

DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nThe Green European Foundation\, in cooperation with the Institute for Political Ecology\, the Open Society Initiative for Europe and the Heinrich Böll Stiftung – Prague office\, is organising the 3rd edition of the Green Academy Winter Seminar. \nThe seminar will focus on the ongoing debates around the Green New Deal and degrowth concepts and practices in the context of the climate emergency. Deeper avenues to be explored will look at the theoretical\, political and practical level and identify convergencies and conflicts. The seminar will allow for exchanges to develop strategies for concrete change and policies. \nParticipants will be introduced to “degrowth doughnut” visualisations\, underlining the cultural excesses and shortfalls in a democratic construction of a degrowth transition. \nA “kaleidoscopic” perspective of the movement and various interconnections and differences will explore specific sectors where degrowth can make a fundamental difference\, while also considering the significance of the emerging Green New Deal policies on both sides of the Atlantic. \nDemands for a socially just and planned transition need to be articulated precisely in order to head off reactionary responses to the climate emergency. And this we shall redesign as we go\, for the further Europeans slide into climate chaos without establishing a convivial sociality\, the more likely we are to contend with authoritarian and inegalitarian powers to which emergency conditions often give rise. \nThe politics of this historical dynamic – the actors\, alliances\, institutions and social processes creating degrowth transitions is the subject of lively debate in Europe and beyond\, shaping up right before our eyes. SUMMARY:The Climate Crisis and the European Media (Prague)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nWhat is the role of the media in Europe in communicating the climate crisis? What needs to be changed? And how can this be achieved? These and other questions will guide our panel debate\, which takes place in prostor39 café and community centre\, and features contributions from MEPs\, activists\, and journalists. \nThey touch on a wide range of topics\, from ownership structures and oligarchisation of the media\, to fossil industry disinformation campaigns and the sometimes bizarre consequences of media emphasis on balancing content. Concerns are expressed\, but there is also room for hope and solutions. While the internet environment may be prone to opinion bubbles and misinformation\, it facilitates diversified news sources and can also give rise to social movements and allow for mobilization. For journalists\, informing people of the vital and indisputable science behind climate change is perhaps a way to defend the very need for their profession. \nThe panel debate marks another successful step in cooperation between Deník Referendum and the Green European Journal. \n  \nSpeakers\nThe panel will consist of two MEPs and two journalists. DESCRIPTION:Event Background\nIn the framework of the Idea Challenge\, the Green European Foundation invited young people aged 16 – 24 from Croatia\, Czechia and Portugal to submit their ideas which aims to make their own neighborhood or a local community more open\, democratic\, inclusive\, and ultimately European. 3 winner ideas from the three countries were selected and are now on the way of implementing their projects. \nAbout the event\nMonika – 19 years old high school student is set to film a short documentary\, based on a case study from Czechia. SUMMARY:Towards a Local Healthy Food Distribution System (Brno)
DESCRIPTION:Event Background\nThis roundtable discussion will be held as part of the GEF transnational project Fair and Healthy Food\, which aims to bring together different actors within the food system to find alternative solutions and support positive changes to the Common Agricultural Policy of the European Union. \nAbout the Event\nThe participants of this roundtable discussion will include important stakeholders in local food distribution systems\, including local farmers\, sellers\, NGOs\, politicians and community representatives. \nThe discussion will focus on how to promote the emergence of a sustainable system of production and distribution of healthy and organic local food in the southern Czech region of Moravia. \nThe experience of local farmers and producers and the barriers they face will be presented in the form of the results of a survey that GEF together with Institute for Active Citizenship has been conducting among them in Czech Republic throughout the past months. SUMMARY:Climate Emergency – Raising Ambition (London)
DESCRIPTION:Event Background\nWith the consequences of climate change beinng increasingly perceptible through extreme weather events (both worldwide and in European countries)\, verifiable research is urgently needed to set targets and policies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions by the amount necessary to secure a livable environment. At the same time\, policies to reduce greenhouse emissions are often attacked for threatening existing jobs.  \nGEF’s transnational project “Strengthening Climate Targets\, Creating Local Climate Jobs” sets out to explore what greenhouse emissions reductions would mean in practical terms for our job markets and economies\, and whether jobs could be created in rural areas across Europe. Can both a safe and just economically sound life for all be achieved? But not being comfortable interacting in English should not prevent you from applying\, the majority at the event will be non-native speakers and the group will be able to help out if there is some term you might not know! \nCosts: The full cost of working materials\, visa and lodging (accommodation in multi-bed rooms\, vegetarian food\, and refreshments) during the event will be covered by the organizers. DESCRIPTION:Event Background\nSummer Camp & GEF Hackathon \nGreen European Foundation partner Federation of Young European Greens is organising the Summer Camp “Our Social Rights – Our Future!” that will take place from 22 – 28 July 2019 in Serbia. GEF will support the Summer Camp and organise a hackathon that will take place on 25 and 26 July. \nThe summer camp will consist of five full days exploring different tools and platforms Young Greens can use to campaign and advocate for social rights. Participants will leave the summer camp with practical skills to use and share in their local contexts and on European level. \nThe aims of the summer camp are: \n\nTo understand how social rights apply to specific topics – including regional specificities\, a just transition towards a sustainable society\, and gender aspects.\nTo determine which tools to use for a campaign/advocacy depending on the cause and context\, and how to apply these tools with limited resources.\nTo equip participants with the skills needed to carry out hackathons in their local regions.\n\nAbout the Event\nHackathon – an intense\, sprint-like\, goal-oriented\, small teamwork-based activity. Hackathon is a period of 36h when participants can plan\, design and carry out their own mini-projects in small teams. The teams will be composed of young people – participants and guests – with different skills and backgrounds: activists\, young advocates\, lawyers\, and programmers. \nProgramme\nThe programme will be based on the principles of non-formal education and intercultural learning. We strive for an active\, inclusive environment for direct communication and sharing of knowledge. The summer camp will balance the dynamism of the hackathon with interactive discussions and reflections for participants to develop their practical and theoretical knowledge of social rights in an supportive and informal environment. \nParticipants will already be familiar with social rights and issues facing young people through the other activities of the summer camp. \nThe participants will identify their particular interests and choose one problem that they want to find a solution for. Forming teams of three-four\, they will spend the next 40 hours designing an innovative solution to their chosen problem. \nThe session will start with a small teambuilding and sharing expectations excercise\, as well as determining routine and agreeing breaks amongst the teams. \nThe hackathon will be participant-led\, with monitoring from the prep-team who can offer guidance where needed. \nThe goal of the hackathon is to not necessarily have a concrete solution to the challenge posed\, but to have developed ideas in how to approach the issues and work collectively and creatively towards solutions. DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nThe fifth Green Summer Academy in Poland will take place 20km from the Odra River\, a  natural border between Poland and Germany\, near the two towns on the both sides of the river: Słubice in Poland and Frankfurt / Oder in Germany. \nThe Academy is set against the new political reality following the European Parliament elections\, in which the Greens became the fourth largest force in the Parliament. At the same time\, right-wing and conservative\, authoritarian forces were highly successful in Poland and Hungary. \nIn Poland\, pro-democracy and European opposition are preparing for national parliamentary elections in October. On a global context\, we are facing crises in the form of climate change\, biodiversity extinction\, natural resource depletion\, pollution\, growing inequalities and rising nationalism. \nOn the other end of the spectrum\, we are seeing citizens mobilising across the world\, with initiatives at every level rising to meet these crises.
