SUMMARY:Hackathon on Social Rights at FYEG Summer Camp (Serbia)
DESCRIPTION:Event Background\nSummer Camp & GEF Hackathon \nGreen European Foundation partner Federation of Young European Greens is organising the Summer Camp “Our Social Rights – Our Future!” that will take place from 22 – 28 July 2019 in Serbia. GEF will support the Summer Camp and organise a hackathon that will take place on 25 and 26 July. \nThe summer camp will consist of five full days exploring different tools and platforms Young Greens can use to campaign and advocate for social rights. Participants will leave the summer camp with practical skills to use and share in their local contexts and on European level. \nThe aims of the summer camp are: \n\nTo understand how social rights apply to specific topics – including regional specificities\, a just transition towards a sustainable society\, and gender aspects.\nTo determine which tools to use for a campaign/advocacy depending on the cause and context\, and how to apply these tools with limited resources.\nTo equip participants with the skills needed to carry out hackathons in their local regions.\n\nAbout the Event\nHackathon – an intense\, sprint-like\, goal-oriented\, small teamwork-based activity. Hackathon is a period of 36h when participants can plan\, design and carry out their own mini-projects in small teams. The teams will be composed of young people – participants and guests – with different skills and backgrounds: activists\, young advocates\, lawyers\, and programmers. \nProgramme\nThe programme will be based on the principles of non-formal education and intercultural learning. We strive for an active\, inclusive environment for direct communication and sharing of knowledge. The summer camp will balance the dynamism of the hackathon with interactive discussions and reflections for participants to develop their practical and theoretical knowledge of social rights in an supportive and informal environment. \nParticipants will already be familiar with social rights and issues facing young people through the other activities of the summer camp. \nThe participants will identify their particular interests and choose one problem that they want to find a solution for. Forming teams of three-four\, they will spend the next 40 hours designing an innovative solution to their chosen problem. \nThe session will start with a small teambuilding and sharing expectations excercise\, as well as determining routine and agreeing breaks amongst the teams. \nThe hackathon will be participant-led\, with monitoring from the prep-team who can offer guidance where needed. \nThe goal of the hackathon is to not necessarily have a concrete solution to the challenge posed\, but to have developed ideas in how to approach the issues and work collectively and creatively towards solutions. Partiticipants will hone their practical skills by putting their ideas into reality. \nPracticalities:\nLanguage: The main language of this activity will be English. \n\nSuccessful applicants to the FYEG Summer Camp will be notified by 5 June. Stay tuned for more information on the Summer Camp coming soon.

SUMMARY:Green Summer Academy - Closer to Europe (Ośno Lubuskie)

SUMMARY:Food as a Commons (Cork)
DESCRIPTION:Event Background\nAs part of the transnational project Fair and Healthy Food\, GEF aims to reach different actors and bring them together to explore alternative solutions and reforms to the European Union’s Common Agricultural Policy and how to redesign food systems around agroecological principles. \nAlongside exploring examples of cities developing their own outstanding food policies\, the project will also examine how regional sustainable food systems can revitalise rural communities. \nAbout the Event\nRising public concern around climate change and biodiversity loss has led to increasing attention on our food system as both a cause but also a potential contributing solution to environmental breakdown. While efforts are underway to reform European food and agricultural policies in order to better protect nature and rural livelihoods\, growing numbers of people are becoming actively involved in reshaping food systems at local level. \nSuch efforts are demonstrating a creative resurgence of ideas and practices of how we can recover the multidimensional values of food as a public good rather than allow it to remain as a means for private corporate profit\, and to help reduce our own personal environmental footprint and retrieve some control over our food supply. \nThe event proposes that food is not only a vital source of personal well-being but offers a route toward greater citizen engagement. Growing food in cities offers numerous benefits for the urban environment and community resilience and can improve availability of fresh\, nourishing produce especially for those for whom access is restricted by income. Above all\, it enables us to re-establish the central purpose of a food system: to produce food sustainably to feed people adequately. \nThis day-long event is an opportunity to pool ideas\, share experiences and celebrate the power of community in growing\, cooking and eating food. \nYou are encouraged to book early for this event as we will restrict numbers in order to facilitate an engaged\, constructive and convivial experience. \nProgramme\n09:15 – 09:30\nGather in the Lecture Room of Nano Nagle Place \n09:30 – 11:00\nTwo keynote presentations will address new thinking that is helping us to redesign civic food systems led by Henk Renting\, Researcher and Lecturer in Urban Food Systems at AERES University of Applied Sciences\, Almere\, the Netherlands and Orla O’Donovan\, Lecturer at the School of Applied Social Studies\, University College Cork. The session will be introduced and chaired by Colin Sage\, Co-Founder and former Chair of the Cork Food Policy Council. \n11:00 – 12:45\nIn order to enable full engagement by participants this session will be organised as a World Café\, and convened by Klaus Harvey of Transition Town Kinsale. Coffee and nibbles will be available and there will be short presentations as inputs to deliberations from Food Historian Regina Sexton\, GIS Expert Tomás Kelly and others. \n12:45 – 13:30\nReport back from table hosts\, discussion and elaboration of final action points. \n13:30 – 14:00\nWalk to St. John’s Central College\, Sawmill Street\, Cork (a short 5 minute walk). \n14:00 – 16:00\nWe will join the ‘street feast’ that is being hosted by La Cocina Pública\, a Chilean theatre group that will be based in the Cork South Parish neighbourhood as part of the Cork Midsummer Festival. Please note that the registration fee will include lunch here. \nSpeakers \n\nHenk Renting\nResearcher and Lecturer in Urban Food Systems\,\nAERES University of Applied Sciences\, Almere\, The Netherlands\nOrla O’Donovan\nLecturer at the School of Applied Social Studies\,\nUniversity College Cork\nColin Sage\nCo-Founder and former Chair of the Cork Food Policy Council\n\nLa Cocina Pública / The Public Kitchen\nHoused in a shipping container La Cocina Pública is a mobile kitchen that brings people together through theatre\, food and dining.\nTravelling from Chile through cities and neighbourhoods in Europe in search of local recipes\, aromas\, practices and customs\, La Cocina Publica will work with Cork’s South Parish residents to share stories and food that will be enjoyed at delicious collective dining events – with Chilean and Cork artists\, storytellers\, singers and musicians providing you with memories and entertainment. Your ticket includes a meal\, but to encourage a family-friendly atmosphere for all ages\, no alcohol will be served at these events. \nTickets\nThis event costs €20 per person (plus booking fee)\, which covers entrance to all events on Saturday\, including morning coffee as well as lunch during the Cocina Pública street feast. \nPlease secure your place by booking here – early booking is RECOMMENDED as numbers will be restricted in order to facilitate an engaged\, constructive and convivial experience. \n\n

SUMMARY:Roundtable: Work(ing) policies in the EU (Brussels)
DESCRIPTION:Event background\nWe are living in an era of rapid socio-economic restructuring: economic globalisation\, trade liberalisation\, skill-biased technological innovation and digitalisation\, changes of family structures and gender roles\, the rise of the service economy\, population ageing\, fiscal austerity and economic crisis management\, imbalanced growth\, increased poverty\, inequality\, and increasing international mobility. \nThese changes all affect the lives of citizens and the nature of their work. A growing number of people feel left behind due to the increasing inequalities and labour market polarisation. \nWithin the European Green movement\, various perspectives on how (economic) security\, social inclusion and meaningful participation of everyone in society can be fostered. These views are influenced by the importance that work is given as an integrating factor in society as well as in national contexts and political realities. \nAbout the event\nThe Green European Foundation is opening a space for dialogue to exchange on the experiences with different labour market policies across Europe and to map the different policy tools and perspectives on work within the Green movement. The participants\, ranging from representatives of Green organisations and parties from all over Europe to academics\, trade unions and members of the European Green actors will share and debate different policy models from active labour market policies (ALMPs) to universal basic income (UBI) models or pilot projects\, as well as the idea of an ecological transition income. \nProgramme\n14:00 Welcome and introduction \n14:45 Presentation by Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks: Active labour market policies in the Netherlands \n15:05 1st round of discussion: \n15:45 Coffee break \n16:00 2nd round of discussion \n17:30 Wrap-up and outlook \n18:00 Networking reception \n\nPlease note that is an invitation-only event.

SUMMARY:Green Economy Congress - Municipalism: Economic Patterns for the Green Europe (Belgrade)
DESCRIPTION:Event Background\nThe world is undergoing radical transformations which is changing the fundamental values on which the industrial era was founded. Multiple crises caused by growing inequality and environmental destruction need an urgent and sustainable answer. \nThe economic parameters that measure growth and success are changing and the biggest assets today are knowledge and experience. With the expertise of academics working on a green economy\, we are producing new forces to create a more just and sustainable world. \nThe Green Economy Congress is an annual interactive conference\, which gathers participants from the local region and across Europe. Since its inception\, it has intended to break the business-as-usual path\, not only in the economy but in the wider society. SUMMARY:Aquarium Inauguration (Porto)
DESCRIPTION:Event Background\nIn the framework of the Idea Challenge\, the Green European Foundation invited young people aged 16 – 24 from Croatia\, Czechia and Portugal to submit their ideas which aim to make their own neighborhood or local community more open\, democratic\, inclusive\, and ultimately European. Three winning ideas from the three countries were selected and are now in the process of implementing their projects. \nAbout the event\nThis project by João – 23 years old Aquatic Science student from Porto\, pulls together technological\, social and environmental dimensions\, as he will build an aquarium integrated with a floating island at the Porto Escola Básica Augusto Gil high school . \nThe installation of the aquarium will involve Marine and Biotechnology Science students and the students of the high school. The aquarium intends to raise awareness about freshwater ecosytems\, which are particularly vulnerable to climate change: many species within these fragmented habitats have limited abilities to disperse as the environment changes;  water temperature and availability are climate-dependent;  many systems are already exposed to numerous anthropogenic stressors. \nThe aquarium will be inaugurated over June 5th & 6th\, on World Environment Day and in the run-up to World Oceans Day. Students will receive presentations on climate change and Portuguese freshwater fish\, presented by João and Dr. Cristina Calheiros.  The students will also have the opportunity to help in the installation of plants in the aquarium and learn more about how it works. \n\nFor updates on the the activity\, follow our Facebook and Instagram accounts.

SUMMARY:Call for Participants: Summer Camp: “Our Social Rights - Our Future!”
DESCRIPTION:Summer Camp & GEF Hackathon\nGreen European Foundation partner Federation of Young European Greens is announcing an open call for participants in the Summer Camp “Our Social Rights – Our Future!” that will take place from 22 – 28 July 2019 in Serbia. \nThe aims of the summer camp are: \n\nTo understand how social rights apply to specific topics – including regional specificities\, a just transition towards a sustainable society\, and gender aspects.\nTo determine which tools to use for a campaign/advocacy depending on the cause and context\, and how to apply these tools with limited resources.\nTo equip participants with the skills needed to carry out hackathons in their local regions.\n\nProgramme\nThe five days will be divided into three parts: \n\nOpening of the event; sharing and building upon the conclusions from “Social Europe Now!’’ – a seminar that identified the struggles young people from various regions of Europe face today in relation to housing\, education and healthcare as well as having fostered development of a common vision for the future of work.\nHackathon – an intense\, sprint-like\, goal-oriented\, small teamwork-based activity. Hackathon is a period of 36h when participants can plan\, design and carry out their own mini-projects in small teams. The teams will be composed of young people – participants and guests – with different skills and backgrounds: activists\, young advocates\, lawyers\, and programmers.\nCreating a Toolkit for a Hackathon on Social Rights: based on our common experience of running and taking a part in a social rights hackathon\, we will create a toolkit for those who are going to organise one back home in the autumn 2019\n\nThe summer camp will be a fast pace\, interactive experience of Young Greens creating campaigns together to make social rights a reality for all. Participants will also learn how to create their own FYEG-supported hackathons in their local regions in autumn 2019. \nThe programme will be based on the principles of non-formal education and intercultural learning. We strive for an active\, inclusive environment for direct communication and sharing of knowledge. The summer camp will balance the dynamism of the hackathon with interactive discussions and reflections for participants to develop their practical and theoretical knowledge of social rights in an supportive and informal environment. \nApplications\nApplications are open to all young people inspired by fighting for social rights and green ideology. FYEG encourages applications reflecting diversity in all forms; therefore we welcome applications from those who identify as women*\, LGBTQIA+\, people of colour\, or with a disability or other health impairment. \nThe “Our Social Rights – Our Future!” Summer Camp is the second activity of FYEG’s Reclaim Your Social Rights! project\, supported by the European Youth Foundation of Council of Europe. The hackathon that will take place on 25 and 26 July and is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of the FYEG and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the GEF. \nPracticalities:\nParticipants: FYEG is looking for 50 young people aged between 16-35\, residing in one of the Council of Europe member states\, Belarus or Kosovo*. \nLanguage: The main language of this activity will be English. But not being comfortable in interacting in English should not prevent you from applying\, as FYEG will look into translation options for the event. \nCosts: The full cost of working materials\, visa and lodging (accommodation in multi-bed rooms\, vegetarian food\, and refreshments) during the event will be covered by the organisers. In exchange\, FYEG asks for a participation fee of 40 EUR for participants coming from non-EU countries and 60 EUR for participants coming from EU countries\, Norway\, Switzerland\, and Iceland. Applicants for whom paying this fee is an obstacle for participation\, should still apply and mention this in their application. FYEG will try to find a solution together with the applicant after the selection is finalised. \nFYEG will reimburse 70% of travel costs for the participants coming from the EU countries\, Iceland\, Norway and Switzerland and 90% for the participants from the non-EU Eastern European countries within reasonable limits and within Europe\, with the condition to combine the most economic and environmentally friendly way (lowest price + travel time + CO2 emissions). \nDEADLINE for submitting online applications: 29 May 2019 at Midnight CET. You will be informed about the results of the selection by 5 June. \nAPPLY HERE! \n\n*All references to Kosovo\, whether to the territory\, institutions or population\, in this text shall be understood in full compliance with the United Nations Security Council Resolutions 1244 and without prejudice to the status of Kosovo.

SUMMARY:Basic Income & Social Rights: Local and European Perspectives (Bologna)
DESCRIPTION:Event Background\nThis event is part of the Green European Foundation transnational project Basic Income – European Public Debate. \nBasic income has emerged in recent years as a potential tool to reverse the current issues facing society\, such as lack of affordable housing and access to education and healthcare\, income inequality and disparity between generations. \nAs basic income gradually permeates into mainstream debates and factors like technological advancements change our understanding of work\, it is important to explore how such a scheme could be implemented\, and the impact it would have on social rights at the local and European level. \nAbout the Event\nThis workshop will be held as a side event of the Federation of Young European Greens (FYEG) four day educational event on social rights\, and organised with the support of FYEG. \nIt will bring together young people locally and from across Europe\, with international participants including those from FYEG member organisations\, social movements\, and trade unions. \nParticipants will learn via roundtable discussions about basic income\, existing pilot projects and the connection with social rights. They will identify the pressing requirements to make such a scheme a reality. \nProgramme\nThe workshop will be divided into three parts\, with breaks in between: \n\nThe presentation of the GEF publication European Green Perspectives on Basic Income will provide an introduction to the basic income concept and describe successes and limitations of past pilot projects\, and discuss the results of research into the impact of basic income schemes on access to housing\, education\, healthcare and employment.\nTwo fishbowl-style dialogues will serve as a basis to discuss the challenges and solutions to basic income implementation. This part will touch upon the need for certain infrastructure to be in place and the challenges associated with competing views of basic income.\nFinally\, roundtable discussions will delve deeper into the realisation of basic income on the local and European level\, with a focus on connecting the two levels together and how basic income could strengthen social rights at these levels.\n\nSpeakers\n\nNatalie Bennett\, GEF Board of Directors\nAlex Foti\, author of the General Theory of the Precariat\n\nRegistration\nThe workshop will be free and open to everyone but subject to registration. You can register by filling in this form. Deadline for registration is Sunday\, 21 April 2019\, midnight CET. \nLanguage\nThe event will be held in English but whispered translation from English into Italian can be provided on the spot. \n\nFor further updates\, check out the Facebook event.

In particular: \n\nTo understand how social rights apply to specific topics – including regional specificities\, a just transition towards a sustainable society\, and gender aspects.\nTo determine which tools to use for a campaign/advocacy depending on the cause and context\, and how to apply these tools with limited resources.\nTo equip participants with the skills needed to carry out hackathons in their local regions.\n\n The activity will consist of 5 full working days and will consist of three parts: \n\nOpening of the event; sharing and building upon the conclusions from the \,\,Social Europe Now!’’ – a seminar that identified the struggles young people from various regions of Europe face today in relation to housing\, education and healthcare as well as having fostered development of a common vision for the future of work.\nHackathon – an intense\, sprint-like\, goal-oriented\, small teamwork-based activity. Hackathon is a period of 36h when participants can plan\, design and carry out their own mini-projects in small teams. The teams will be composed of young people – participants and guests – with different skills and backgrounds: activists\, young advocates\, lawyers\, and programmers.\nCreating a Toolkit for a Hackathon on Social Rights: based on our common experience of running and taking a part in a social rights hackathon\, we will create a toolkit for those who are going to organise one back home in the autumn 2019.\n\nIn order to achieve these objectives\, we are looking for 3 young activists to join forces with the rest of the preparatory team composed of FYEG’s Project Manager\, one member of the Executive Committee\, one member of the Coordination Team of the project and a member of Serbian Green Youth – the host organisation.\n  \nPrep-team members should speak English\, be available during the preparation period\, be responsible about fulfilling their tasks\, have good organisational skills\, be good team players and  committed to the aims of the project and FYEG’s values\, and be familiar with non-formal education methods. We strive for an active\, inclusive and direct communication and transfer and sharing of knowledge. Sessions will be balanced between theoretical inputs\, trainings\, workshops\, discussions\, reflection\, planning\, brainstorming and other interactive methods of learning. \nPracticalities:\nAccommodation\, food\, working space\, travel and visa costs for preparatory team will be fully covered within reasonable limits and within Europe.
