SUMMARY:Change of Climate in the World of Jobs? (Budapest)
DESCRIPTION:Context\nWith a changing climate\, many traditional jobs will be lost all over Europe\, as a just transition to less carbon emission intensive industries and a green economy is inevitable. Innovative policy proposals will be necessary to create new jobs that do not threaten the emission reduction targets as they have been agreed in the Paris Climate Agreement from 2015. \nAbout the event\nAs part of the transnational project “Strengthening Climate Targets\, Creating Local Climate Jobs”\,  this conference will feature a first presentation of the local job creation potential in Hungary in a zero carbon society that has been estimated as part of this year’s project research. Together with the data gathered on the United Kingdom and Ireland\, this estimation will be a first step towards quantifying and publicising the EU-wide potential of greening local economies to create new climate jobs\, and better address climate change\, in the run-up to COP24. \nProgramme\n17:00 – 17:20 PRESENTATION OF THE GEF TRANSNATIONAL PROJECT AND RESEARCH RESULTS – Jonathan Essex\, Green House Think Tank United Kingdom \n17:20 – 17:40 4th INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION: REDUCE OR INCREASE EMISSIONS? – Miklós Kis\, Journalist \n17:40 – 18:00 CLIMATE CHANGE AND SOCIAL JUSTICE – Sándor Fülöp Phd\, Co-chair of Ökopolisz \n18:00 – 18:15 COFFEE BREAK \n18:15 – 19:30 Q & A\, DISCUSSION \nRegistration\nTo register for the event\, please click here. \n\nStay tuned for updates on the programme here and via our Twitter and Facebook channels.

SUMMARY:Cooperative Society (Skopje)
DESCRIPTION:Context\nAt the beginning of 2018\, a publication\, The Revision of the Economy in the Balkans: Change Policy\, Not Climate\, as well as a green economy manual\, was published as part of the transnational project carried out by Green European Foundation supported by Blue Link Bulgaria\, Sunrise Macedonia and Networked Serbia. \nThe research done in the previous years has shown immense potential and pointed out the fact that these national economies are currently going in a different direction: subsidising multinational companies and mega infrastructure projects in privatizing natural resources. \nA process of political centralisation\, by taking competences from the local level and exclusion of the citizens from the economic and social decisions is evident. In this political environment\, the only possible solution is a creation of bottom-up\, self-organized\, citizens’ initiatives with a purpose of association of labor and services. The countries of the region have their own historical legacy of a cooperative economy in socialism\, which is now in a process of renewal. \nAbout the event\nThe Green European Foundation\, with the support of ASSED Sunrise\, is organising this international conference “Greening the Economy: Cooperative Society”. \nThe conference will explore the policies relating to the development of the green economy in the region and discuss topics including green procurement\, renewable energy and green jobs. \nIt will also serve as a platform for an exchange of knowledge and a chance to promote green policies in the region\, with the aim to raise awareness among stakeholders\, politicians\, and the general public for the economic potential of a Green Economy. \nAs part of the event\, there will be a promotion of the 2017 Green European Foundation study “Revision of the Economies in the Balkans: CHANGE POLICY NOT CLIMATE!” \, which is the result of trans-border cooperation and research in Macedonia\, Serbia and Bulgaria. \nProgramme\n09:30 – 10:30: Arrival of participants and speakers \n10:30 – 11:00: Registration and welcome coffee \n11:00 – 11:15: Opening: \n\nModerating: Maja Morachanin MP\nAleksandar Gjorgjievski\, transnational coordinator\n\nShort presentation of the 2018 project \n\nASSED Sunrise – Skopje\,\n\n11:15 – 11:30: Presentation of 2017 GEF Publication: Revision of the Economies in the Balkans: Change Policy Not Climate \n\nHristina Odzaklievska\, Head Researcher\, Macedonia\nZaklina Zivkovic\, Networked\, National Coordinator\, Serbia\n\n11:30 – 12:00: Public Policies Towards a Green Economy in the Republic of Macedonia \n\nLjiljana Popovska\, MP\n\n12:00 – 12:30: Coffee break \n12:30 – 14:00: Panel: Green Economy – Cooperative Society \n\nAna Petrovska\, State Secretary of the Ministry of Environment Planning\n\nOpen Cooperatives as a Driving Force of the Economic Transformation \n\nDirk Holemans\, Oikos\, Belgium\nIva Marković\, PolEkol\, Serbia\n\n14:00 – 15:00: Lunch \n\nRegistration\nTo register for this event\, please contact Aleksandar Gjorgjievski aleksgo@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Climate Jobs - Towards a Zero-Carbon Economy (Bristol)
DESCRIPTION:Context\nWith the consequences of climate change being evermore perceptible through extreme weather events (both worldwide and in European countries)\, verifiable research is urgently needed to set targets and policies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions by the amount necessary to secure a livable environment. At the same time\, policies to reduce greenhouse emissions are often attacked for threatening existing jobs. \nGEF’s transnational project “Strengthening Climate Targets\, Creating Local Climate Jobs” sets out to explore what greenhouse emissions reductions would mean in practical terms for our job markets and economies\, and whether jobs could be created in rural areas across Europe. Can both a safe and just economically sound life for all be achieved? To this end\, our project undertook research on the potential to create more climate jobs in three EU countries with diverse historic and economic prerequisites: United Kingdom\, Ireland and Hungary. \nAbout the event\nThis upcoming side event at the Autumn Conference of the Green Party of England and Wales will offer an introduction to the GEF transnational project. In particular\, it will present the results of modelling to estimate the net number of jobs that could be created in each local authority area of the United Kingdom\, via the transition to a zero carbon economy\, in the key sectors of energy\, transport\, waste management\, buildings and food\, farming\, and forestry. \nDuring the event\, the overall GEF project as well as the research findings and resulting policy recommendations for the United Kingdom will be presented by: \nJonathan Essex\, Green House Think Tank \nAnne Chapman\, Green House Think Tank \nChaired by: Natalie Bennett\, Board Member Green European Foundation and former Leader of the Green Party of England and Wales \n\nFor more information on this workshop and the Autumn Conference of the Green Party of England and Wales from 5 to 7 October in Bristol\, you can find the programme here. \nFor updates and other upcoming events of this GEF transnational project\, follow us on Twitter and Facebook.

SUMMARY:Shaping the Energy Sector in Europe (Skopje)
DESCRIPTION:Context\nThis conference is part of the Green European Foundation Energy Democracy transnational project\, which aims to explore the potential of an energy transition for Europe and how to shape this process in a democratic\, participatory way. \nEurope has to change its energy system into a fully renewable one to transition to a sustainable economy and to establish a real climate policy. This is a major challenge for every Member State of the European Union\, but will only succeed if the states work to together. \nEuropean citizens are already playing an active role\, together with governments at different levels\, as they are organising themselves in national energy cooperatives and also the European Federation REScoop. \nStudies show that by 2050\, around 45% of all EU households could be producing their own renewable energy\, more than a third could come through renewable energy cooperatives. This constitutes a huge opportunity for regional economic development\, as locally-owned renewable energy projects deliver eight times the value of projects that are owned by private companies not from the area. The reality in the different Member States is however extremely diverse. While the contribution of citizens’ Energy co-ops and local communities is well recognized in Western Europe\, the situation in Eastern Europe is quite the opposite. \nAbout the event\nThe conference will bring together contributors from GEF partners\, energy cooperatives and energy sectors to discuss renewable energy potential on both a Europe and local level. \nProgramme\n09:30 – 10:30:  Arrival of participants and speakers \n10:30 – 11:00:  Registration and welcome coffee \n11:00 – 11:15: Opening: \n\nShort presentation of the 2018 project\nAleksandar Gjorgjievski\, national coordinator\nASSED Sunrise\, Skopje  \n\n11:15 – 12:00: Presentation:  The Transformation to Energy Democracy \n\nDirk Holemans\, transnational coordinator Oikos\, Belgium\n\n12:00 – 12:30: Coffee break \n12:30 – 13:10: Energy Cooperatives in Europe \n\nQuest from ReScoop\n\n13:10 – 13:40: Energy Sector in Macedonia and the Region – Current & Future Perspective  \n\nErvin Redjepagikj\n\n13:40 – 14:00: Renewable Energy \n\nAleksandar Hristu Kanevce\n\n14:00 – 15:00: Discussion on Energy Democracy – with the speakers  \n15:00 – 16:00:   Lunch  \n\nRegistration\nTo register for this event\, please contact Aleksandar Gjorgjievski aleksgo@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Call for Illustrators
DESCRIPTION:Background\nThe Green European Foundation (GEF) is a European level political foundation. It is linked to\, but independent of\, other European Green actors such as the European Green Party and the Green Group in the European Parliament. Modelled on many successful national green political foundations\, GEF works to encourage European citizens to participate in European political discussions and to ultimately forge a stronger\, more participative European democracy. Read more: www.gef.eu \nAbout Green Learning\nAn important element of our annual work programme is the GEF online learning platform (currently www.gef-learning.eu)\, where we make available interactive and innovative e-courses on Green topics.  In 2018\, we expanded the scope of the platform to accommodate more diverse types of courses\, organisations and audiences. \nBesides expanding the content available on the e-learning platform\, we decided to create a landing page – green learning – a website\, which tells the story behind our e-learning programme\, invites participants to sign-up (which they can do directly from the landing page) and invites other organisations to collaborate with us. \nWhat we need\nOne of the challenges we are facing is to keep the both our landing page and the e-learning environment clean\, easy to navigate and consistent. We therefore intend to introduce an additional element to our brand identity\, which will tie the landing page Green Learning (in production)\, e-learning platform and various courses together. \nWe are looking for a skilled illustrator\, who will not only deliver the main illustration available on Green Learning\, but also offer a long-term vision to help us fulfill the following objectives: \n\nto support us in elevating the brand presence\, prominence and recognition\nto support us in reinforce our image as a credible and cohesive brand\n\nTarget audience\nOur primary target groups: \n\nEuropean citizens involved in the green parties\, youth organisations\, foundations\, etc.\nEuropean citizens not yet involved in green organisations but interested in green topics.\n\nOur secondary target groups:               \n\nEducational institutions (high schools/universities) and educators\nGreen NGOs not necessarily affiliated to the political movement\n\nDemographics\nOur learners are predominantly European and represent diverse national\, ethnic and racial groups. The courses attracted almost equal number of learners identified as female and male. Our attitude surveys show that our learners tend to be socially active and politically progressive. The age of our learners varies between 15 and 60 (with vast majority between 20 – 40). \nCreative direction\nWe welcome different creative styles as long as it’s not in conflict with the brand identity of the Green European Foundation. The illustrations need to be built around and reflect the demographics of the platform and the following principles: \n\nGreen Learning serves the purpose of educating people on green topics\nGreen Learning helps learners to connect with other like-minded people and create a community\nGreen Learning empowers learners to take action\nGreen Learning hosts e-courses that are informative\, interactive and were developed with real humans in mind.\n\nDeliverables\n\nA short vision statement for the illustration\n1 illustrated web banner\nA short visual concept for the interface of gef-learning.eu\n\nPurpose and function\nThe signature web banner will be permanently displayed on the Green Learning home page. Additional illustrations will be displayed on the home page and the online learning platform. \nThe illustrations will also be used as social media and print content for promotional purposes. \nFormat\n\nThe illustration should be designed for web\, 16:9 ratio\, in high resolution jpeg/png format.\nIndividual characters of the illustration should be delivered as vector files.\n\nAttachments\nPlease\, refer to the attachments for further details regarding the placement of the illustration and margins. We also recommend to take a look at the platform (www.gef-learning.eu) and Impact Europe course to get an idea of the type of content we produce. \nReview date/s:\nAdditional briefing – October 17 \nMidterm feedback – October 22 \nFinal submission – October 26 \n The period covers research and sketching\, refining and finalising the deliverables. \nBudget\n1200 euro\, VAT included \nSelection and future cooperation\nThe final decision will be made based on your previous line of work and a basic sketch of the two main deliverables. The continuation of cooperation on this project is expected\, yet not guaranteed. \nInterested illustrators are invited to submit their main idea + sketch and a link to their portfolio to gio.megrelishvili@gef.eu. Deadline: 10 October. \n

SUMMARY:New Political Course Days (Barcelona)
DESCRIPTION:Context\nThe current times in Europe are characterised by political uncertainty and instability in regard to domestic as well as foreign policies. As it is clear that we are living in times of fundamental change\, citizens all over Europe must be equipped with the tools to take a new political course and they must be empowered to face the challenges ahead. \nMany countries across the EU face similar challenges in various areas that affect citizens’ daily lives: insufficient access to affordable housing\, high unemployment rates and precarious jobs\, sexist violence and the ongoing migration and asylum policies crisis. At the same time\, we can observe a neoliberal drift as well as the rise of nationalist\, undemocratic forces in some EU member states that is counterproductive to find sustainable solutions to those challenges. \nOnly with an extensive participation of citizens\, the radical changes that are needed to face those challenges can be made. \nAbout the event\nThe upcoming New Political Course Days\, organised with the support of Fundació Nous Horitzons and in collaboration with a variety of other actors such as Fundació l’Alternativa and Instituto 25M Democracia\, will provide a space for debate with agents of change and to formulate demands towards the political representatives for this era of change in Catalonia\, Spain and Europe. \nProgramme\nFriday\, 14 September \n17:00 REGISTRATION \n17:20 OPENING \n17:30 DISCUSSION WITH ADA COLAU \nAda Colau\, Mayor of Barcelona \n18:15 PANEL DEBATE Multilevel governance\, politics of scale and social transformation \nLucía Martín\, ECP representative in the Congress of Deputies: Housing policies \nPablo Cotarelo\, Engineer and consultant for the energy sector: A new energy economy \nMarta Junqué\, Fearless Cities: From the neighbourhoods to Europe – the relation of local and global \nModeration: Marc Parés\, Professor of Geography at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and head of the  Research Group on Urban Governance\, Commons\, Internet & Social innovation at the Institute for Government and Public Policies \nProgramme\nSaturday\, 15 September \n10:00 PANEL DEBATE Europe\, sovereignty and democracy \nErnest Urtasun\, Member of the European Parliament for the Greens/EFA Group \nFabio de Masi\, Member of the German Parliament of Die Linke \nElly Schlein\, MEP of S&D \nModeration: Lucile Schmid\, Co-President of the Green European Foundation \n11:00 BREAK \n11:15 PANEL DEBATE A new economic\, social and environmental model for Catalonia \nJordi Angusto\, Economist: A new economic model for Catalonia \nSandra Ezquerra\, Professor of sociology at Universitat de Vic Barcelona: A feminist economy \nJosé Antonio Donaire\, Professor of geography at Universitat de Girona: A sustainable economy \n12:45 PANEL DEBATE Start of the new political course: the challenges  ahead for progressive forces in this moment of change \nElisenda Alemany\, Member of the Catalan Parliament for Catalunya En Comú Podem \nIone Belarra\, Representative in the Congress of Deputies for Unidos Podemos \nEnric Juliana\, Deputy Director of La Vanguardia \nGemma Ubasart\, Professor of political science at Universitat de Girona \nModeration: Dolors Comas d’Argemir\, President of Fundació Nous Horitzons \n14:15 CLOSING \n\nFor more info and registration\, send an email to fundacio@noushoritzons.cat \nStay tuned for updates on this website and by signing up for the Facebook event!

SUMMARY:Technological Unemployment and Basic Income (Budapest)
DESCRIPTION:Context\nTechnological change causes short-term job losses\, that can ultimately lead to lasting increases in unemployment. Especially among young people in Europe\, unemployment is already extremely high and unequal distribution of common resources\, shrinking of social security and lack of access to low-skilled jobs deepens the insecurity about the future of work. To counter the erosion of the 20th century welfare state and the increasing youth precariousness\, new ideas  have to be put forward on how society’s wealth can be distributed in a just way. \nAbout the event\nIn the framework of this year’s Basic Income for all EU Citizens? transnational project\, we will host this particular workshop to have a closer look at the prospects of a Universal Basic Income to combat youth precariousness and will especially address the following questions: \n\nWhat is technological unemployment\, what are its possible consequences and how does it relate to young people?\nWhat are policy answers to technological unemployment and what kind of role could Basic Income play?\nWhat are the digital tools we can use and what is the strategy to advocate for Basic Income in a digital world?\n\nThe workshop will be hosted at the Federation of Young Europeans’ week-long training “Common Digital (R)evolution”. \nProgramme\nDuring this workshop\, young Green activists from all across Europe will learn more about technological unemployment and its relation to basic income from Lilja Tamminen\, Director Of Operations & Product Management at a computer software company\, former Deputy Member of the Helsinki City Hall and expert on technological (un)employment. \nFurthermore\, the participants of the workshop will receive practical tools during a hands-on training session to argue for basic income as a means to move towards a more just society. \n\nFor more info on the event and how to participate\, contact office@fyeg.org

SUMMARY:Moving Beyond Fragments (Komiža)
DESCRIPTION:Context   \nIn its 6th edition\, the Green Academy aims to identify the convergences and draw on positive experiences of social movements and political actors across Europe. The will is to foster transnational European exchange on ways of moving beyond the fragments\, with a particular focus on Eastern Europe and the European South\, where obstacles to enact progressive politics seem most vivid. The emergence of far-right authoritarianism and the exposure to austerity should challenge us to formulate a sharp and coherent political strategy\, homegrown to the European semi-periphery.   \nSince its establishment in 2010\, the Green Academy was designed as an intensive knowledge-building and discussion program for left\, green and other progressive political forces. So far\, almost 1000 people from civil society\, politics\, academia\, movements and media have participated in its work. The 6th edition of the Green Academy\, grounded in intersectionality and transdisciplinary approach\, encourages in-depth knowledge building\, combining academic modules with political debate and activist exchanges.   \nContinuing its focus on three education modules\, namely degrowth/sustainability\, municipalism/commons and climate change/just transition\, it will aim to break with disciplinary divisions and limitations\, using methodologies such as critical pedagogy and new formats that encourage self-organisation\, cultural expression and learning of practical political skills.   \nAbout the event \nAt the Green Academy GEF will organise a specific workshop under the title ‘’Degrowth & Glocal Sustainability’\, that will offer relevant cutting-edge knowledge to participants (from Doughnut Economics and Eco-Sufficiency to the concept of a Good life for all) through interactive formats of learning.  \nThe workshop will concentrate on different variations between growth\, technology\, work and quality of life\, but also tackling specific aspects of inequality or participation. It will help to identify points of convergences where political and social alliances can be framed and strengthened while at the same time not ignoring the potential conflicts or controversial aspects that have divisive impact\, with the ultimate goal of finding solutions for them. The focus of this workshop will be predominantly to frame the narrative about a deeper understanding of sustainability as an old concept\, through discovering of its importance of future design of future life in and of the European Union.  \n  \nThe workshop ‘Degrowth & Glocal Sustainability‘ is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Institute for Political Ecology and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Fighting for Our Common Planet (Selce)
DESCRIPTION:Context \nThe Summer Camp ‘Fighting for Our Common Planet’ is part of Federation of Young European Greens’ annual project on commons. Commons refer to shared resources and social practices that are maintained by communities in a sustainable manner. Good management of commons offers a sustainable and accessible alternative to the current centralised and dominant role of the state and market. \nThe Summer Camp will focus on environmental commons\, particularly on how the climate can be managed in a sustainable\, inclusive and participatory way. \nAbout the event \nA central part of the programme – ‘Climate Change Summer Workshop’\, organised by the Green European Foundation – is built around Climate Change. It aims to increase awareness of the importance of combating climate change among Young Greens\, and a better understanding of climate negotiations and what actions are needed on the EU and national level to make a difference. Moreover\, young people will be trained to bring climate change into the public debate and make it a relevant subject. \nProgramme \nFriday July 27 \n12:00-13:30 ‘Looking into the Paris Agreement’ \nIntroduction to climate negotiations – understanding how international stakeholders cooperate to mitigate temperature rises and adapt to climate change. We will look into what the Paris Agreement brought to the table\, what were the commitments by different European countries\, and how far are we in reaching them. From FYEG’s Climate Change Working group we will learn the relation between the European Union and nation states when it comes to national policies related to climate change. \n14:30-16:00 ‘Towards the climate change solutions’ (with a livestream) \nThree guest speakers coming from different backgrounds are invited to discuss the main challenges faced within international climate negotiations and in the elaboration of European Climate Policies (Mitigation\, adaptation\, North/South Solidarity\, Transfer of knowledge\, Loss and damage\, etc.). The panel will address questions such as: Why is COP24 in Poland important? What policies are planned in relation to combating climate change around Europe and in the EU? What changes can we expect in the upcoming elections in regards to climate change policies? Is Europe ready to mitigate the consequences of climate change? What are the next steps in the fight against climate change and what are the entry points through which young people can influence the outcome of climate negotiations? \nSpeakers: Yan Dupas\, Political advisor in the Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament (tbc); Kelsey de Porte\, Jonge Klimaatbeweging; Luka Tomac\, Green Action/Friends of the Earth Croatia (tbc); Moderator: Zuzana Pavelkova\, FYEG’s co-spokesperson \nSaturday July 28 \n12:00-13:30 ‘Storytelling about Climate’ \nWith the engagement of a guest-trainer from the Green European Journal (tbc) and a famous French vlogger Vincent Verzat (Partager C’est Sympa)\, participants will be trained about efficient ways of communicating climate change to a wider audience. Emphasis of the training will be put on how to create a positive narrative on combating climate change\, and how to incentivise people about the issue. The program will be based on the principles of non-formal education and intercultural learning. We strive for an active\, inclusive and direct communication and sharing of knowledge. \nPracticalities: \nThe workshop is open to the public. Those interested can receive information about available places at project.manager@fyeg.org. \n  \nThe event ‘Climate Change Summer Workshop’ is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of the Federation of Young European Greens and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Colours of Green (Graz)
DESCRIPTION:Context\nFollowing the loss of the Austrian Green party during the national elections in 2017\, the entire Austrian Green movement is at a crossroads. ‘Green Repositioning’ aims to start a process of re-organising the Green movement and to come up with a new Green narrative that links ecological and social concerns and lays out how to master the Great Transformation based on solidarity and resilience. A clear positioning and a joint understanding of socio-ecological politics based on Political Ecology will become a cornerstone in reinventing the Austrian Green movement. This ‘Green Repositioning’ project consists of several different events throughout the year all over Austria. \nWithin this framework\, GEF will organise a Summer Academy with the support of Grüne Bildungswerkstatt. \nAbout the event\nThree key areas – six workshops – one Green identity. Following this motto\, the Summer Academy will function as a laboratory within the ‘Green Repositioning’ project currently implemented by the Austrian green foundation Grüne Bildungswerkstatt. \nFollowing the Regional Ideas Lab\, organised by the Greens/EFA Group in the European Parliament and the European Green Party on the days before the Summer Academy\, the event will continue lively debates with change makers and pulse generators from all over Europe. \nThe aim is to develop working theses for the following three key areas that were identified: \n\nEnvironment & Ecology\nDemocracy & Media\nEconomy & Future of Work\n\nThe project ‘Green Repositioning’\, including the GEF Summer Academy\, aims to contribute to a new Green narrative that answers the question ‘Where will the Green movement be in 2030\, and how can it contribute to a better future?’. \nThree workshops will be organised in English. The detailed programme will be available on this website soon. \n\nRegistration\nRegister now for the GEF Summer Academy in Graz by following this link. \nThe participation fee for the event is 60 Euro (including catering during the event). For further questions\, send an email to sommerakademie(at)gbw.at.

SUMMARY:Green it!
DESCRIPTION:we are launching our first ever crowdfunding campaign and we want you to be part of it! We will raise 5000 Euro to kickstart Green it!\, an online platform\, which will serve as a database of green experts and training resources.  \nOur idea is simple: we will start with an online platform to make available training materials and resources\, as well as allow for the recognition of those trainers who use sustainable\, inclusive and forward-thinking methods in their work.   \nWe are on a mission to improve the quality of green training all around Europe and we need you!   \nWith the generous support of our community\, we raised over 10% of the target in the first hours of the campaign. Now we rely on you to help us make Green it! happen.    \nEvery contribution helps – the number of people donating is important. If you can give 10 euros\, that’s another demonstration of interest\, likely to encourage another person to follow you. But if you’re able to give more\, that’s brilliant\, and gets us closer to the goal.  \nWe simply cannot do this without you.

SUMMARY:Restoring Food to the Heart of the Community (Cork)
DESCRIPTION:Context\nThe broadening and deepening of global food production and supply has been a powerful force of economic\, social and environmental transformation for the last three decades or more with profound changes\, not only to farming systems that become locked into industrial commodity production\, but also to adverse environmental effects leading to major ecological ruptures: The productivist agri-industrial model has achieved a remarkable grip over the policy agenda surrounding food security. Yet the consequences include growing concern over emissions of greenhouse gases and impacts upon biological diversity. \nThe summer school will propose policy changes not only in response to the review of the EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) which is taking place in 2018 but also to the Milan Urban Food Policy pact. The European Commission’s communication on the review of the CAP states that climate change and preserving the environment is the main challenge facing the EU\, and the CAP must play an enhanced role in this battle – not only to protect farmers from the impact of climate change but also to ensure that farming does not contribute to making the problem worse. Stringent new goals will be set at European level to ensure farming contributes fully to helping meet the EU’s international commitments on climate change and sustainability. \nAbout the event\nThe Summer University is organised in collaboration with academics\, local policy makers\, artisan producers\, community food security NGOs and local growers. Its objective is to discuss a new policy which can develop a new healthy\, sustainable and resilient food system. The aim is to improve equitable access to quality food\, create a fairer and sustainable food system\, and reduce the environmental footprint of food. \nProgramme\nFriday\, June 29 \n19:30 Welcome reception and opening address \n\nNuala Ahern (Green Foundation Ireland)\nColin Sage (School of the Human Environment in UCC and Chair of the Cork Food Policy Council)\nDuncan Stewart (Chair of Green Foundation Ireland).\n\nSaturday\, June 30 \n09:30 – 09:40 Welcome and introductions \n09:40 – 10:20 Dr Colin Sage Why we must restore food to the heart of community \n10:20 – 11:00 Cristina Grasseni Food citizenship: Sustainable food procurement in cities \n11:20 – 12:00 Oliver Moore re-CAP: Food and Farming Policy in Europe \n12:00 – 12:40 Regina Sexton Cork: City of Food \n12:45 – 13:30 Debate and Discussion \n16:15  St. Stephen’s Sustainable Food Lab: Talk on food growing \n17:15  Nano Nagle Place: Heritage experience \nSpeakers\n  \nDr Colin Sage – Senior Lecturer in Geography at UCC with research interests in food systems\, environmental policy and civic initiatives for social change. SUMMARY:Jobs in a Changing Climate (Dublin)
DESCRIPTION:Context\nWith a changing climate\, many traditional jobs will be lost all over Europe\, as a just transition to less carbon emission intensive industries is inevitable. It will be vital for all stakeholders\, such as policy makers\, trade union representatives\, civil society organisations\, think tanks and businesses to establish a dialogue and to come up with new solutions to those challenges – and the Green movement can spearhead this process. \nAbout the event\nAs part of the transnational project “Strengthening Climate Targets\, Creating Local Climate Jobs”\,  this conference will contribute to the discussion within the Irish society and among the key stakeholders on how to ensure a just transition to Zero Carbon and create local climate jobs across the country. \nThe event will also feature results of the ongoing research of the Green European Foundation and its partners to draft and launch strategies for local investment to create more climate jobs in Ireland. \nOne of the practical examples that will be discussed is the proposed closure of three peat burning power stations in the Midlands and the effect on the livelihoods of 400 workers. Studies have been carried out on how the transition to a low carbon society in the UK will create sustainable jobs in Sheffield and Isle of Wight. Also we will look at the Lucas Plan\, where workers devised viable alternatives to redundancies\, using their skills to develop socially useful products and services. The implementation of the Circular Economy will also affect jobs\, positively and negatively\, and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. \nSpeakers\nDuncan Stewart\, Environmentalist\, Broadcaster\, and Chair\, Green Foundation Ireland \nTommy Simpson\, Project Coordinator Green Foundation Ireland and former President Dublin Council of Trade Unions \nJonathan Essex\, Project Coordinator\, Greenhouse Think Tank United Kingdom \nPeter Simms\, Researcher\,Greenhouse Think Tank United Kingdom \nAdrian Kane\, Public Administration and Community Division Organiser\, SIPTU \nSinead Mercier\, Researcher\, Just Transition \nYvonne O’Callaghan\, Strategic Organiser\, SIPTU Trade Union Ireland \nJoseph Curtin\, Senior Fellow\, Institute of International and European Affairs \nThe input by the speakers will be each followed by Q&A sessions to allow for full participation in the event of those attending. \n\nThe event is free of charge but registration is required. To secure your spot follow this link. \nRegistration for the event on the day starts at 9:30. \nFor more  information on  the conference\, please contact info@greenfoundationireland.ie

SUMMARY:Exploring the Economic Impact of Migration (Oxford)
DESCRIPTION:Context\nEurope seems stuck and appears to be paralysed by the latest inward migratory processes. This is affecting democracy itself as people are unable to find a party which expresses their fears and politicians are unable to find solutions and scenarios that they can relate to. As a result\, core values of the European Union and green values are jeopardised whereas populist and right-wing forces are still on a winning streak in large parts of the EU and anti-migration rhetoric has not least also played a role during the EU referendum in the United Kingdom. \nAbout the event\nThe transboundary need for a change of narrative to disseminate the reality of migrants among society and their impact on the society in return is evident. Hence\, the conference\, while building on experiences and findings of GEF’s transnational project of the past two years on migration and asylum policies in the EU\, aims to put progressive political forces back ahead of the game to drive a positive approach to international migration. \nOne aspect will be to showcase\, how the Thames Valley\, Oxford University and other European hubs are a success – not only economically – specifically due to their inward migrations. Moreover\, the event will also look at the growing impact of climate change and how that aspect can be channelled for the green family to offer its unique solutions as a force for positive change. \nThe conference will feature speakers from Europe\, for instance the United Kingdom\, Italy\, Norway\, Malta\, etc. but also experiences from Nigeria and other parts of the world. \nDraft Programme\n10:00 – 11:00 INTRODUCTION TO THE GREEN EUROPEAN FOUNDATION PROJECT “CHANGING THE NARRATIVE OF MIGRATION” \n11:00 – 11:30 COFFEE BREAK \n11:30 – 13:00 CONTEMPORARY CHANGES TO THE LABOUR MARKET \n13:00 – 14:00 LUNCH \n14:00 – 15:00 HI-TECH SOLUTIONS; THE VALUE AND IMPACT OF MIGRATION \n15:00 – 16:00 EXAMPLES OF INWARD MIGRATION AND BEST PRACTICES \n16:00 – 16:30 TEA BREAK \n16:30 – 17:00 CLOSING PANEL AND DISCUSSION:  Migration of the future – Choices and pathways \n\nRegister and purchase your tickets now by following this link and stay tuned for updates by  following us on Facebook or Twitter .
