SUMMARY:Restoring Food to the Heart of the Community (Cork)
DESCRIPTION:Context\nThe broadening and deepening of global food production and supply has been a powerful force of economic\, social and environmental transformation for the last three decades or more with profound changes\, not only to farming systems that become locked into industrial commodity production\, but also to adverse environmental effects leading to major ecological ruptures: The productivist agri-industrial model has achieved a remarkable grip over the policy agenda surrounding food security. Yet the consequences include growing concern over emissions of greenhouse gases and impacts upon biological diversity. \nThe summer school will propose policy changes not only in response to the review of the EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) which is taking place in 2018 but also to the Milan Urban Food Policy pact. The European Commission’s communication on the review of the CAP states that climate change and preserving the environment is the main challenge facing the EU\, and the CAP must play an enhanced role in this battle – not only to protect farmers from the impact of climate change but also to ensure that farming does not contribute to making the problem worse. Stringent new goals will be set at European level to ensure farming contributes fully to helping meet the EU’s international commitments on climate change and sustainability. \nAbout the event\nThe Summer University is organised in collaboration with academics\, local policy makers\, artisan producers\, community food security NGOs and local growers. Its objective is to discuss a new policy which can develop a new healthy\, sustainable and resilient food system. The aim is to improve equitable access to quality food\, create a fairer and sustainable food system\, and reduce the environmental footprint of food. \nProgramme\nFriday\, June 29 \n19:30 Welcome reception and opening address \n\nNuala Ahern (Green Foundation Ireland)\nColin Sage (School of the Human Environment in UCC and Chair of the Cork Food Policy Council)\nDuncan Stewart (Chair of Green Foundation Ireland).\n\nSaturday\, June 30 \n09:30 – 09:40 Welcome and introductions \n09:40 – 10:20 Dr Colin Sage Why we must restore food to the heart of community \n10:20 – 11:00 Cristina Grasseni Food citizenship: Sustainable food procurement in cities \n11:20 – 12:00 Oliver Moore re-CAP: Food and Farming Policy in Europe \n12:00 – 12:40 Regina Sexton Cork: City of Food \n12:45 – 13:30 Debate and Discussion \n16:15  St. Stephen’s Sustainable Food Lab: Talk on food growing \n17:15  Nano Nagle Place: Heritage experience \nSpeakers\n  \nDr Colin Sage – Senior Lecturer in Geography at UCC with research interests in food systems\, environmental policy and civic initiatives for social change. SUMMARY:Jobs in a Changing Climate (Dublin)
DESCRIPTION:Context\nWith a changing climate\, many traditional jobs will be lost all over Europe\, as a just transition to less carbon emission intensive industries is inevitable. It will be vital for all stakeholders\, such as policy makers\, trade union representatives\, civil society organisations\, think tanks and businesses to establish a dialogue and to come up with new solutions to those challenges – and the Green movement can spearhead this process. \nAbout the event\nAs part of the transnational project “Strengthening Climate Targets\, Creating Local Climate Jobs”\,  this conference will contribute to the discussion within the Irish society and among the key stakeholders on how to ensure a just transition to Zero Carbon and create local climate jobs across the country. \nThe event will also feature results of the ongoing research of the Green European Foundation and its partners to draft and launch strategies for local investment to create more climate jobs in Ireland. \nOne of the practical examples that will be discussed is the proposed closure of three peat burning power stations in the Midlands and the effect on the livelihoods of 400 workers. Studies have been carried out on how the transition to a low carbon society in the UK will create sustainable jobs in Sheffield and Isle of Wight. Also we will look at the Lucas Plan\, where workers devised viable alternatives to redundancies\, using their skills to develop socially useful products and services. The implementation of the Circular Economy will also affect jobs\, positively and negatively\, and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. \nSpeakers\nDuncan Stewart\, Environmentalist\, Broadcaster\, and Chair\, Green Foundation Ireland \nTommy Simpson\, Project Coordinator Green Foundation Ireland and former President Dublin Council of Trade Unions \nJonathan Essex\, Project Coordinator\, Greenhouse Think Tank United Kingdom \nPeter Simms\, Researcher\,Greenhouse Think Tank United Kingdom \nAdrian Kane\, Public Administration and Community Division Organiser\, SIPTU \nSinead Mercier\, Researcher\, Just Transition \nYvonne O’Callaghan\, Strategic Organiser\, SIPTU Trade Union Ireland \nJoseph Curtin\, Senior Fellow\, Institute of International and European Affairs \nThe input by the speakers will be each followed by Q&A sessions to allow for full participation in the event of those attending. \n\nThe event is free of charge but registration is required. To secure your spot follow this link. \nRegistration for the event on the day starts at 9:30. \nFor more  information on  the conference\, please contact info@greenfoundationireland.ie

SUMMARY:Exploring the Economic Impact of Migration (Oxford)
DESCRIPTION:Context\nEurope seems stuck and appears to be paralysed by the latest inward migratory processes. This is affecting democracy itself as people are unable to find a party which expresses their fears and politicians are unable to find solutions and scenarios that they can relate to. As a result\, core values of the European Union and green values are jeopardised whereas populist and right-wing forces are still on a winning streak in large parts of the EU and anti-migration rhetoric has not least also played a role during the EU referendum in the United Kingdom. \nAbout the event\nThe transboundary need for a change of narrative to disseminate the reality of migrants among society and their impact on the society in return is evident. Hence\, the conference\, while building on experiences and findings of GEF’s transnational project of the past two years on migration and asylum policies in the EU\, aims to put progressive political forces back ahead of the game to drive a positive approach to international migration. \nOne aspect will be to showcase\, how the Thames Valley\, Oxford University and other European hubs are a success – not only economically – specifically due to their inward migrations. Moreover\, the event will also look at the growing impact of climate change and how that aspect can be channelled for the green family to offer its unique solutions as a force for positive change. \nThe conference will feature speakers from Europe\, for instance the United Kingdom\, Italy\, Norway\, Malta\, etc. but also experiences from Nigeria and other parts of the world. \nDraft Programme\n10:00 – 11:00 INTRODUCTION TO THE GREEN EUROPEAN FOUNDATION PROJECT “CHANGING THE NARRATIVE OF MIGRATION” \n11:00 – 11:30 COFFEE BREAK \n11:30 – 13:00 CONTEMPORARY CHANGES TO THE LABOUR MARKET \n13:00 – 14:00 LUNCH \n14:00 – 15:00 HI-TECH SOLUTIONS; THE VALUE AND IMPACT OF MIGRATION \n15:00 – 16:00 EXAMPLES OF INWARD MIGRATION AND BEST PRACTICES \n16:00 – 16:30 TEA BREAK \n16:30 – 17:00 CLOSING PANEL AND DISCUSSION:  Migration of the future – Choices and pathways \n\nRegister and purchase your tickets now by following this link and stay tuned for updates by  following us on Facebook or Twitter .

SUMMARY:Creating Eco-Societies through Urban Commons Transitions (Brussels)
DESCRIPTION:Context: Towards socio-ecological societies\nCities are becoming a new and hopeful transnational governance level. They are organising themselves in a whole tissue of networks (Fearless Cities\, Fabcities\, etc.)\, working together in domains like climate policy\, renewable energy and urban economy. \nAt the same time\, citizens are developing a whole range of urban commons\, based on co-operation and an ethics of care. Tired of only being a powerless consumer or a passive citizen\, we get active as maker\, urban farmer\, solidarity volunteer\, user of shared resources\, civic or social entrepreneur\, etc. This goes along with the establishment of new organisations and infrastructures like fab labs\, energy co-ops\, co-working spaces\, urban food production plots\, and many more. \nIn recent years\, we have seen cities like Ghent and Bologna moving a step further\, establishing structures and processes that aim at building synergies between the public and the commons domain. This is part of a new political vision\, the Partner State. So\, a partner city sustains and gives incentives to alternative civil and economic institutions\, like the commons and cooperatives. The conference\, as part of this year’s transnational project around Urban Commons Transitions\, therefore aims to look at these developments of collaborative city-making and to examine those prototypes of transformative cities as a driving force towards socio-ecological societies. \nAbout the Event: A conference to inspire and motivate\nLately institutions\, research groups and organisations were created to investigate how commons could be integrated in a more sustainable way in the vivid networks of cities. During this conference\, organised with the support of the Flemish Think Tank Oikos\, experts from different projects and institutions will inspire you with their knowledge and findings about sustainable commons in cities.  \nDraft Programme\n19:30 – 19:40 INTRODUCTION Dirk Holemans\, Director of Oikos and GEF Board member \n19:40 – 20:20 THE VISION OF TWO EXPERTS Michel Bauwens & Elena De Nictolis \n20:20 – 20:50 THREE STORIES ON URBAN COMMONS \nMarie Haspeslagh\, Enchanté – a network of warm-hearted merchants \nLucie Evers\, Partago – a coop for electric car sharing – Mobility Factory \n3rd speaker to be announced \n20:50 – 21:10 PANEL DISCUSSION “CHANGING THE CITY”\, Marie Haspeslagh\, Lucie Evers\, tbc \n21:10 – 21:30 CLOSING PANEL “URBAN COMMONS TRANSITION”\, Michel Bauwens & Elena De Nictolis \nKeynote speakers\n \nMichel Bauwens \nFounder and director of the P2P Foundation and expert in peer production\, governance and property. SUMMARY:The Commons Transition in Practice (Brussels)
DESCRIPTION:Context\nCities are becoming a new and hopeful transnational governance level. \nLately institutions\, research groups and organisations were created to investigate how commons could be integrated in a more sustainable way in the vivid networks of cities. \nAbout the Event\nThe seminar will be kicked off by two experts who will share their experiences and knowledge: Michel Bauwens (P2P-Foundation) and Elena De Nictolis (LabGov). Afterwards\, all participants are invited to enrich the debate by contributing with their own perspective and experiences in the field. \nThis seminar organised with the support of our Flemish partner Oikos Think Tank is targeting participants that are already working on commons. By bringing together the theoretical and experiential experts\, this event aims to tackle the challenges on how urban commons transitions can be a prototype for creating socio-ecological societies.   \nMore info and updates can be found in our Facebook event. \nHow to register\nTo register for this seminar follow these steps: \n1. Send an e-email to info@oikos.be stating your motivation and shortly describing the commons initiative/project you are active in  \n2. Participation fee: for organisations € 20\, for private individuals € 10. \n3. Transfer the participation fee to the following details: BE29 0015 9877 0164 (BIC: GEBA BE BB) of Oikos vzw with as a reference ‘seminar commons’ \nYour participation for this seminar will confirmed to you via e-mail. \nJoin our evening conference!\nThe seminar will be followed from 19h30 to 21h30 by a conference entitled ‘Creating Eco-Societies through Urban Commons Transitions‘. During this event\, the experts will debate with a broader audience and share thoughts with commons’ initiatives already functioning in an Urban environment.

SUMMARY:The socio-economic model of the Commons in Europe (El Prat de Llobregat)
DESCRIPTION:Context\nLocal governments have to rethink their way of doing politics with more and more citizens’ initiatives emerging across Europe that are establishing new organisations\, introducing a shared economy and leave the image of a passive citizenry behind them. The challenge ahead is therefore to build specific structures and processes that foster synergies between the public and the commons domain. \nThese developments could lead to a prototype of transformative cities\, being the driving force introducing the socio-economic model of the Commons as the new paradigm. Governmental structures however must be reformed to constitute a so-called Partner State\, where politicians perceive their constituency as a community of citizens with a lot of experience and creativity and top-down politics are left behind. \nAbout the event\nBy highlighting several best practices from Catalonia and all over Europe and in particular the municipal level as the most fertile ground for commons practices\, this conference will showcase inspiring examples of how this Partner State can be realised and organised in the best possible way. \nDraft Programme\n9:30 – 10:00 REGISTRATION  \n10:00 – 10:15 WELCOME Susanne Rieger\, Green European Foundation Co-president \n10:15 – 10:30 INTRODUCTION TO THE CONFERENCE Sergi Alegre\, Fundació Nous Horitzons \n10:30 – 11:15 KEYNOTE: A NEW SOCIO-ECONOMIC MODEL – COMMONS IN EUROPE Dirk Holemans\, Director Oikos Think Tank and City Councillor of Ghent (Belgium) \n11:15 – 11:45 COFFEE BREAK \n11:45 – 12:45 MUNICIPALITY AND THE COMMONS \n\nThe case of Barcelona Lluís Torrens\nThe case of Prat de Llobregat Lluís Mijoler\n\n12:45 – 13:45 ECONOMY OF THE COMMONS \n\nEsperanzah! SUMMARY:Greening the Economy in Balkans: Cooperative Society (Belgrade)
DESCRIPTION:Context\nAt the beginning of 2018\, a publication The Revision of the Economy in the Balkans: Change Policy\, Not Climate\, as well as a green economy manual\, was published as a part of the transnational project carried out by Green European Foundation supported by Blue Link Bulgaria\, Sunrise Macedonia and Networked Serbia. \nThe research done in the previous years has shown immense potential and pointed out the fact that these national economies are currently going in a different direction: subsidising multinational companies and mega infrastructure projects\, privatizing natural resources. A process of political centralization\, by taking competences from the local level and exclusion of the citizens from the economic and social decisions is evident. In this political environment\, the only possible solution is a creation of bottom-up\, self-organized\, citizens’ initiatives with a purpose of association of labor and services. The countries of the region have their own historical legacy of a cooperative economy in socialism\, which is now in a process of renewal. \nAbout the event\nThe research has shown the immense potential of the process of greening the economy in Balkans\, which is currently challenged. The conference will aim to present the relevant results of the study and to be a platform for discussion on how to start a green business in Serbia and on the cooperative model as one of the viable solutions. \nThe conference will be an occasion to present the main results of the research published in The Revision of the Economy in the Balkans: Change Policy\, Not Climate. The event will host two panel discussions with prominent organisations and individuals working on the green economy in Serbia. \nProgramme\n11:45 – 12:00 Opening a conference\n12:00 – 13:30 Panel: How to start a green business in Balkans? \nHristina Odžaklieska\, Sunrise Macedonia\nMiloš Stančić\, Networked/GAJP\nJelena Plavanski\, PKS- Belgrade Chamber of Commerce\nIvana Marković\, Trag Fondation\nModerator: Violeta Jovanov Peštanac\, Networked \n13:45 – 15:15 Panel: Green Cooperatives and Cooperative Economy: Innovative Forms of Economics \nRepresetative of Baštalište\nRepresentative of Association for Sustainable Development (ASOR)\nStjepan Car\, Green Energy Cooperative (ZEZ) Hrvatska\nKristina Cvejanov\, Serbian Packaging waste Recyclers Association\nModerator: Iva Marković\, Polekol \n15:15 – 15:30 Closing word: Žaklina Živković\, Networked \n Stay tuned for updates\nSubscribe to our Facebook event\, where you will receive reminders and the latest news on content. SUMMARY:Universal Basic Income - a Green Answer to the Future Challenges of the Labour Market? (Antwerp)
DESCRIPTION:Context\nIn 2017\, the Green European Foundation started\, with the support of different national partner foundations a transnational project on basic income with the objective to refine the concepts behind Universal Basic Income and contribute to the Europeanisation of the debate while taking into consideration the huge differences of social security systems across Europe. To this end\, we formed a basic income expert group with representatives of Spain\, Catalonia\, Switzerland\, Germany\, Serbia\, Belgium and Greece. In 2018\, the focus of the ‘Basic Income for all EU Citizens?‘ project lies on the financial concepts and on formulating first ideas for a European pilot project on basic income that can deliver comparable results for different European countries. \nAbout the event\nDuring this session\, we aim to make the link of those discussions to the broader debate on the future of work and whether basic income can become part of the Green answer to the challenges the labour market is currently facing. At the same time\, the session shall serve as an opportunity to exchange on examples and different ideas of Green parties across Europe. \nWe will organise an interactive session\, using the “fish bowl” method: the discussion starts in a semi-circle with one moderator and the three panelists and two empty chairs; after the  first input by the moderator and the three panelists\, the audience is invited to fill the empty chairs and take the role of panelists themselves; after the input the chairs have to be left to other participants. \nFinally\, the workshop will provide an opportunity to present the results of a planned survey we launched on the state of play of the UBI debate within the different Green parties across Europe as well as in the national public discourses. \nModerators\nVille Ylikahri\, GEF Board Member\, Secretary General in the Green Cultural and Education Centre – Visio in Finland\, representative of project expert group for Finland; \n  \n  \nSusanne Rieger\, GEF Co-President\, responsible for European issues and European relations in the Catalan Green foundation Fundació Nous Horitzons (FNH)\, Project coordinator of the GEF transnational project on Basic Income. \n  \n  \n  \nSpeakers\n\nWolfgang Strengmann-Kuhn\, Member of Parliament\, Germany\nJulen Bollain\, Member of the Basque Parliament\, economist & researcher specialised in unconditional basic income\, Spain\nPredrag Momcilovic\, Executive Committee Member Federation of Young European Greens\, journalist\, PhD student on political ecology and degrowth\, Serbia\nIrina Studhalter\, Local Councillor Lucerne & political campaigner\, Switzerland\nNatalie Bennett\, politician and journalist\, former leader of Green Party of England and Wales\, United Kingdom\n\n  \n\nStay tuned for updates\nSubscribe to our Facebook event\, where you will receive reminders and the latest news on content. SUMMARY:Transforming the society from the City of the Commons (Vitoria-Gasteiz)
DESCRIPTION:Context: European cities as the key element of transnational governance\nMore and more cities across Europe and worldwide are organising themselves through initiatives such as Eurocities\, Fearless Cities\, Fabcities and many more\, to work together in areas such as climate policy\, renewable energy or urban economy. \nEspecially cities with progressive governments are spearheading this development and are becoming the key factor of transnational governance.  Oftentimes the respective initiatives start from the bottom up and there must then be a fertile ground provided by local administrations so they can flourish. Those new types of relationships between the public sphere and the commons can become the key drivers within a transformative city model that will ultimately help us achieve more just and ecological societies. \nAbout the event\nThis conference aims to serve as a collective reflection on the urban governance of cities and the limits and functions of the cooperation between administration and an active citizenry across Europe. Experts from Italy\, Belgium and Spain will share their experiences and best practices that are implemented in other cities. SUMMARY:Urban Steps for Resilient Future (Istanbul)
DESCRIPTION:Context\nThis training for trainers includes several stages aiming at young  and motivated people who are eager to improve Eastern European cities through alternative ways of urbanisation\, as well as in mastering their skills in advocacy and project management. \nThe objective is to empower them to shape and improve their urban communities\, and to ultimately create more sustainable green cities based on the principles of inclusion and democracy. \nFirst step: Online Course “Urban Steps for a Resilient Future \nPrior to their attendance of the training\, the course introduces the training participants to different concepts concerning public spaces and urban commons\, explores various examples of urban activism as well as grassroots and entrepreneurial initiatives\, illustrates urban problems and propose good practices. The course Urban Steps for a Resilient Future shows ways to turn ideas into concrete action and how urban activism can serve as a connection point for collaboration between different stakeholders on a local level in reaching common solutions.   \nSecond step: Face-to-face training \nDuring an intensive one-week face-to-face training\, the participants consolidate the knowledge gained while going through the online course\, they receive insights from external speakers and receive in-depth and hands-on training on a variety of topics. Among those are a session on “City and Economy” by Dirk Holemans (Director of the Flemish Green Think Tank Oikos\, GEF Board member and city councillor in Gent\, Belgium)\, an introduction to useful tools of project management by Vesna Jusup (European Green Party)\, as well as a hands-on training on effective communication by Pinar Ilkiz  (Co-Founder and Communications Director at Pikan Ajans\, an NGO social media consultancy). \nThird step: Fortify \nParticipants of the Training for Trainers will have an opportunity to implement one of four Regional Trainings that they designed and planned themselves. These activities are targeting young people from the regions respectively. Young people will both be able to practice their trainer and project management skills as well as to map decision-makers and existing urban initiatives in their local communities/regions and exchange experiences and practices among themselves. At the end of this phase\, every group from each country will have a completed action plan. \n\nAbout the event\nThe international activity will take place from 24-29 April near Istanbul\, Turkey\, in the framework of this year’s transnational project “Creating Socio-Ecological Societies through Urban Commons Transitions”. Both urban activists with experience and people who are new to this topic but keen to develop an expertise in this field were invited to answer the call for participants. \nThe training is going to enable young people to analyse their cities (think global) as well as equip them with capabilities to conduct local activities on the spot with the goal to improve their communities (act local)\, and will include\, among others\, sessions on “City and Inclusion”\, “City and Environment”\, Manifesto Writing\, and more. \nAll the materials produced during the project: Manifesto\, Regional Action plans\, impressions\, recommendations and other materials will be summed up into a publication that will be translated into four different languages\, so stay tuned for the follow up! \n

SUMMARY:Who Will Deliver(oo) the New Economy? - Technological disruption and new forms of regulation (Brussels)
DESCRIPTION:Context\nCompanies presenting themselves as mere digital platforms\, such as Uber\, Airbnb\, Deliveroo\, etc.\, are changing our economy in a rapid pace. These techno-economic disrupters not only change the way we produce or deliver services\, but also lead to radical changes in the labour market\, the availability and the organization of work. They question the existing regime of our national welfare states with a social security system build on full employment in stable and localized jobs. \nThe crucial question is how we will be able to re-embedded these new companies that tend to ignore legislation and deny the European social contract. This is more than an economic issue: more flexible and precarious jobs feed the growing insecurity in our society\, which is a feeding ground for populists and national authoritarianism. So we need progressive answers that embrace the possibilities of digital platforms while at the same time empowering workers and their freedom and building new systems of social security. \nProgramme\n13:00-13:10 Opening words (Aurélie Maréchal\, Director Green European Foundation) \n13:10-13:35 Keynote – The Need for a Green Transformation. Freedom and Security in Uncertain Times (Dirk Holemans\, Director Oikos Denktank)\, followed by a Q&A \n13:35-14:00 The Ethics of Things. Staying Human in the Robot Age (Jochanan Eynikel\, Business philosopher Etion) \n14:00-14:35 A Manifesto to Reform the Gig Economy (Antonio Aloisi\, PhD candidate University of Milan) \n14:35-15:10 Cabfair – We Can Do Better than Uber (Duncan McCann\, New Economics Foundation) \n15:10 coffee break \n15:20-16:00 Panel debate –The European Dimension\, moderated by Aurélie Maréchal \n\nPhilippe Lamberts (MEP Greens/EFA)\nFrank Moreels (President European Transport Workers Federation)\n\n16:00-16:45 Panel debate – The Future of New Economy \n\nMeyrem Almaci (President Groen party)\nAntonio Aloisi  (University Milano)\nDuncan McCann (New Economics Foundation)\n\n16:45 Reception & Networking \nMore information\nThe event is free of charge – to register\, please fill in this form. SUMMARY:"Blockchain & Commons" in Brussels
DESCRIPTION:Context\nThe commons are driven by citizens’ initiatives\, including an increasing amount of digital opportunities as well as new technologies which have the power to transform democracy. This topic will be addressed in the upcoming workshop in Brussels hosted together with Etopia. The event is a part of our ongoing project Reclaim the Commons which aims to explore the transformative power of the commons\, whilst involving the Greens and a wider audience around this topic. \nWorkshop in Brussels\nThis event will provide insights into the use of blockchain as a technology that reinvents the way citizens think and organise their exchanges. Beyond the most famous example of Bitcoin\, employment contracts\, insurances\, our culture\, and much more could be deeply impacted by this change in interaction between users and creators. \nCan this technology be used as new common to pave the way for a better collective data management?  What about the future of public data and their transparency? And what are the potential dangers that need to be averted? \nThese intriguing questions will be discussed during our workshop together with: \n\ntbc\, Blockchain France\nOlivier Roucloux\, Consultant at Fenoryx\n\nTime & Venue\nThe workshop will be hosted on Thursday\, 23 November 2017\, from 11h00 to 12h20 in the premises of Etopia in Brussels (Place des Barricades 1\, 4th floor). \nRegistration\nPlease sign up by sending an email to jonathan.piron@etopia.be.
