SUMMARY:Green Salon: A Green Vision on Future Scenarios for European Defence
DESCRIPTION:The project aims at creating a sheltered space for Green-minded politicians and experts to critically explore political issues and build sharp answers to today’s challenges. \nA Green Vision on Future Scenarios for European Defence\nThe first Green Salon – A Green vision on future scenarios for European defence – took place in Brussels on 18 October 2017. It was an invitation-only event that addressed Greens from the European and national level as well as independent experts and thinkers from across Europe to feed-into the debate with their expertise and assist Greens in discussion and fine-tuning their ideas and positions. \nThe first Green Salon addressed the topic of the future of European defence\, which has re-emerged on the European agenda\, raising questions as to its direction\, ambitions and goals that urgently need to be addressed. \nFormat\nThe opening reflections of the two main contributors\, Nicoletta Pirozzi\, Istituto Affari Internationali\, and Sven Biscop\, Egmont Institute\, served as a spring board for the debate. After their input\, an open discussion between all participants under Chatham house rules formed the core of the event and was moderated by Kristine Berzina\, German Marshall Fund of the United States. \nThe two main contributors’ role was to launch the debate by ‘feeding’ the audience with information and provocative food for thought on the current state of play and debates around European defence\, thereby enabling participants to engage into discussion. \nFollowing the event\, two videos were produced\, focusing on: \n\nThe explanation of the Green Salon concept:\n\n \n\nA summary of the debate on the future of European Defence Policy\, featuring 3 speakers (Nicoletta Pirozzi\, Kristine Berzina and MEP Bodil Valero):\n\n \n

SUMMARY:"Digital Cooperative Platforms" in Brussels
DESCRIPTION:Context\nThe commons are driven by citizens’ initiatives\, including an increasing amount of digital opportunities as well as new technologies which have the power to transform democracy. This topic will be addressed in the upcoming workshop in Brussels hosted together with Etopia. The event is a part of our ongoing project Reclaim the Commons which aims to explore the transformative power of the commons\, whilst involving the Greens and a wider audience around this topic. \nWorkshop in Brussels\nThis event will have a special focus on the role of digital platforms in the context of commons and their impact on the economy. Digital platforms are affecting the relationship between suppliers and customers\, as well as forcing certain sectors to reposition themselves or even to disappear. Competition rules also become more harsh and pose many social problems\, with the examples of Uber and AirBnB. Faced with these pressures\, we observe new dynamics developing around the models of cooperative platforms. The contribution of the commons can represent a new element energising these structures\, making them more flexible and more resilient. What are the models emerging in this way? And how do we organise these platforms? \nSuch relevant questions will be discussed by the following speakers: \n\nStéphane Boulanger from Febecoop (Brussels)\nJean-Philippe Lens  from Topino (Gembloux)\nAlexandre Ségura & Kevin Poperl from Coopcycle (Paris)\n\nTime & Venue\nThe workshop will be hosted on Thursday\, 12 October 2017\, from 11h00 to 13h00 in the premises of Etopia in Brussels (Place des Barricades 1\, 4th floor). \nRegistration\nPlease sign up by sending an email to jonathan.piron@etopia.be.

SUMMARY:ECOPOLIS 2017: Digital Together - For a Just Society
DESCRIPTION:The main theme of Ecopolis 2017 is the impact of the digital era on relationships between people\, between people and organisations as well as between people and politics. In spite of the insecurity of the modern world\, the rapid speed of advancing technologies will not slow down or go away. On the contrary\, our reliance on these technologies will only increase in our daily lives. Therefore\, it will be crucial to empower people to work together\, share ideas\, and connect with politicians in new ways. \nWhat is Ecopolis?\nEcopolis is a full day event incorporating several key note speeches\, high-level panel discussions and round table workshops\, which will converge around the possibilities of digital technologies to unite people in different ways. The panels\, among others\, will for instance be entitled ‘Tools for democracy’\, and ‘Individual autonomy and digital commons’. A core question will be how we can build political communities in the digital era and what policies can be developed on the EU level to facilitate this goal? \nThe aim of Ecopolis is to set up a fruitful dialogue between different sectors of society on the socio-ecological challenges\, to provide a platform for exchange of innovative ideas and perspectives. The Green European Foundation will contribute to the European dimension of this event and interpretation in English\, French\, and Dutch will guarantee broad accessibility to the event. \nProgramme\nThe full programme of Ecopolis 2017 can be found here. \nSpeakers\nSpeakers will be Yochai Benkler (Harvard University Professor and co-director Berkman Center for Internet & Society)\, Ana Naomi de Sousa (Filmmaker and journalist)\, Kate Raworth (Economist and author)\, Aral Balkan (European Cyborg Rights Activist and designer and developer )\, Jeroen Olyslaegers (Novelist and playwright)\, and many more. See the full list here. \nRegistration: Tickets can be purchased here.\nDate: 8 October 2017\nVenue: Kaaitheater\, Brussels\nTime: 11-19h

SUMMARY:Fundraising Training: Projects on Migration\, Refugees & Asylum
DESCRIPTION:In 2016\, GEF and Greens-EFA collaborated on the ‘Guide to EU Funding on Migration and Asylum’\, a publication available in 16 languages\, which showcases EU funds available to local activists and organisations across Europe. In 2017\, the need was identified to organise a training which allows organisations working on these topics to exchange best practices\, at the same time with reinforcing their fundraising capacities. \nTraining in Athens\nThis training is targeting grassroots organisations all over Europe who are working on topics around migration\, refugees or asylum seekers\, and who oftentimes lack the capacities to obtain the necessary funding for their important work. With this opportunity we want to empower the participating organisations to apply for EU funds\, namely the Asylum\, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF)\, or determine alternative funding possibilities and exchange their experiences and best practices. We will share practical experience on innovative fundraising techniques available to organisations with reduced means\, such as crowdfunding\, experiential fundraising\, etc. \nWe also want to enable the participants to network and shape future project ideas together. Last but not least\, we aim to enable exchange with policy-makers as well as with refugees and asylum seekers themselves. \nVenue\, timing and duration\nThe training will last 3 full days\, starting on Thursday\, 28 September 2017\, in the afternoon and ending on Sunday\, 1 October 2017\, in the afternoon. The training will be organised in Athens\, Greece. \nApplications for participation in this event are closed. For more information\, please contact the Project Coordinator\, Carlotta.Weber@gef.eu.

SUMMARY:Eco-innovations for Green Economic Change & Shared Prosperity
DESCRIPTION:Context\nEU policies and strategic documents\, such as Europe 2020\, the EU Energy Roadmap 2050\, EU Climate Adaptation Strategy\, outline approaches to renewable energy and Green and circular economy in order to end the overuse of resources and the social inequality and mitigate climate change. But how do they apply to post-socialist member states and candidates countries in South Eastern Europe? How can eco-innovations contribute to a lasting change of economy and society at large? What are the drawbacks and challenges of Green economy that we need to deal with\, to make sure it brings shared prosperity and environmentally sustainable development for everyone? And how can politicians\, activists and business communicate effectively\, to take society at large on board of the transformation to green economy? \nConference\nResearchers\, policy analysts and practitioners are invited to propose papers in response to these\, and related questions\, for the conference ‘Eco-innovations for Green Economic Change and Shared Prosperity in Bulgaria\, Macedonia and Serbia’ on November 9 – 10\, 2017. \nThe conference is part of the ongoing project “Revision the Economy in the Balkans: Change Policy not Climate” project by the Green European Foundation\, organised with the support of the BlueLink Foundation Bulgaria\, Networked Serbia and the Sunrise Association for Sustainable Social and Economic Development Sunrise from Macedonia. The project aims to foster economy transformation towards environmental\, low-carbon and energy efficient reduction\, along with increasing prosperity and equity in society. \nA comparative study of the policy landscapes in Bulgaria\, Macedonia and Serbia\, practical and political recommendations to achieving equitable Green economy in the three countries will be presented and discussed at the conference. The event will respond to one of the priorities of Bulgaria’s forthcoming presidency of the EU in 2018: eco-innovations as a driver for economic progress. How can they work for achieving shared prosperity and democratisation of the society? \nCall for papers\nWe welcome submissions of research papers\, position papers\, investigation presentations\, or multimedia/film presentations. Abstracts can be submitted by Sunday\, October 8\, 2017 via email to office@bluelink.net. Find all the guidelines for submitting your abstract in this brief guide. \nParticipation\nNo participation fees will be charged for this conference. The working language will be English. In case you have any questions\, please contact the Bluelink team by sending an email to office@bluelink.net.

SUMMARY:Univerde IX Edition in Spain
DESCRIPTION:Context\nThe economic crisis and the increasing number of applications for asylum\, that often remain unacknowledged\, as well as the perceived lack of protection and the fear of cultural identity loss are favouring the rise of populist\, nationalist and xenophobic movements. Those movements are generating a growing anti-European sentiment and are testing our democratic values as well as the very raison d’être of the European Union. \nBesides\, there has been a transfer of decision-making powers from the states to supranational institutions which has resulted in the loss of sovereignty of the nation state as such. This oftentimes is also perceived as a loss of power of the citizens who see their participation in the decision-making process severely diminished\, which has generated a sense of disaffection towards the EU institutions. \nUniverde IX\nThis year’s edition of Univerde therefore aims to increase knowledge and foster the debate about the role of the European Union in the global context\, from a Green point of view. This event will provide a platform to discuss possible Green solutions to the deterioration of democratic processes and the disenchantment with politics of large groups within the European societies. \nSpeakers from all over Europe will discuss on a variety of European issues\, while integrating a Spanish perspective\, in different sessions with more than 300 participants. \nProgramme\nDAY 1 (8 September) \n\nParallel workshops\nOpening ceremony \nConference about “Justice and Democracy in post-Brexit EU”\nPlenary session about “Democracy\, post-truth and populism – challenges to the EU”\n\nDAY 2 (9 September) \n\nParallel workshops\nPlenary session about “Human Mobility and Borders”\nConference about “Ecofeminist contributions to the defense of land and people”\nPlenary session about “Environment and Global Markets”\n\nPlease download the full programme here or find more information on the webpage of Univerde. \nRegistration: Please sign up for the event by sending an email to sconsuegra@fundacionequo.es \nDate: 8-9 September 2017 \nVenue: Logroño (La Rioja)\, Spain \n

SUMMARY:Online Learning for Green Politics at EYC
DESCRIPTION:This event was a part of the programme of the European Youth Conference in Gdańsk hosted with Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung office in Warsaw. \nContext\nEuropean youth is particularly active online. According to data from 2016\, 91% of youth in the EU (16-29 years old) uses internet daily\, as compared to the level of general population\, which was 71%. \nHowever\, only 26% of youth in the EU use online learning materials\, while European Commission data from 2016 indicated that only 9% of young people participated in online courses of any subject. This data shows that there is still a lot of space for promotion of online learning amongst young people. \nThe Green European Foundation and Green Group in the European Parliament have initiated a project entitled Impact Europe – Online Course for Green Activists. The course taps into the potential of using digital learning environments for the advancement of green policies and the empowerment of young people to take action towards making their voice heard and shaping European democracy. \nWorkshop\nDuring this workshop\, we shared the experience of Green European Foundation in developing e-learning programmes. Furthermore\, the workshop provided an interactive space for exploring ways in which the participants can make use of new (online) technologies to advance their own learning and activities. The objectives were to: \n• Enable participants to identify tools and technologies to further their own projects within their available resources;\n• Motivate participants to expand their knowledge on online learning methods beyond this workshop;\n• Empower participants to develop their own online learning strategies. \nModerator\nIoana Banach is Programme Manager at the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Widen Your Outlook - Networking Session at EYC
DESCRIPTION:This event was a part of the programme of the European Youth Conference in Gdańsk hosted with Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung office in Warsaw. \nContext\nTo face today’s challenges\, it is crucial that grassroots movements and activists connect with each other and collaborate to strengthen their impact. This session reflected the needs of youth leaders to expand their network and identify resources which the other organisations/ participants present at the event can offer them. \nWorkshop\nThroughout this interactive session\, participants discovered other participants and their organisations/areas of interest. After a first general round to identify what each participant wants to get out of the event\, we split in groups based on our areas of interest to further explore how we can reinforce each other’s work. We finished the session with a chance for participants to exchange contacts and/or plan an informal follow-up after the session to discuss further. \nThe workshop was moderated by Ioana Banach (Programme Manager at the Green European Foundation) and Carlotta Weber (Project Coordinator at the Green European Foundation).

SUMMARY:Telling the Story: Getting Young Green Voices Heard at EYC
DESCRIPTION:This event was a part of the programme of the European Youth Conference in Gdańsk hosted with Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung office in Warsaw. \nContext\nAusterity\, populism\, illiberalism\, corruption\, nationalism\, xenophobia – all around us today we see obstacles to reaching an open and progressive society. Crackdowns on media\, freedom of expression and civil liberties are all threats to democracy that exacerbate these trends. Now\, more than ever\, the voices of young people need to be heard – yet they are all too often marginalised\, ignored and dismissed. In addition\, the volume of information available\, through new forms of media\, and the circulation of so-called ‘fake news’ make it harder than ever for all citizens\, not just the young\, to obtain reliable\, trustworthy information. In this challenging context\, how can young writers stand out as progressive voices communicating with integrity? \nObjectives\nThis workshop aimed to give participants some tips and tools to make their voice heard. From coming up with an angle to turn an important topic into a compelling news story\, to pitching their proposal and getting their work published – we’ll walked them through the steps to get their story out there. Participants got the chance to start working on a story of their own\, and were invited to share their own experiences with writing\, communicating and getting publishing. \nWe also discussed some controversial questions such as how to be a credible voice whilst taking a political position\, and the role that alternative media can play to shed light on the topics overlooked by the mainstream media. \nThe workshop was moderated by Beatrice White (deputy editor of the Green European Journal) and Julia Lagoutte (editorial assistant at the Green European Journal).

SUMMARY:European Youth Conference 2017 in Gdańsk
DESCRIPTION:The three-day Conference in Gdańsk addressed issues including globalisation and European and nationalist answers to it. From  24 to 26 July\, we explored the current challenges to open societies and inclusive democracies\, and how people risk being divided along lines of integration and identity. Moreover\, the programme included practical workshops and ample space for networking.   \nWe discussed important points of reference and processes that are shaping the worldview of engaged young Europeans\, who on an everyday basis are searching for ways to make a socially responsible\, just and sustainable Europe happen\, and also focus on the causes of and reactions to growing feelings of uncertainty\, injustice and fear in EU member states in a beautiful setting at the Baltic Sea.\n \nGEF Workshops\nThe Green European Foundation contributed to this conference with three relevant workshops: \n\nWIDEN YOUR OUTLOOK – NETWORKING SESSION (Tuesday\, 25 July\, 15h-17h): To face today’s challenges\, it is crucial that grassroots movements and activists connect with each other and collaborate to strengthen their impact. This session reflected the needs of youth leaders to expand their network and identify resources which the other organisations/ participants present at the event can offer them.\nONLINE LEARNING FOR GREEN POLITICS (Tuesday\, 25th of July\, 17h30-19h00): During this workshop\, we shared the experience of Green European Foundation in developing e-learning programmes. Furthermore\, the workshop provided an interactive space for exploring ways in which the participants can make use of new (online) technologies to advance their own learning and activities.\nTELLING THE STORY: GETTING YOUNG GREEN VOICES HEARD (Wednesday\, 26 July\, 11h-13h): This workshop aimed to give participants some tips and tools to make their voice heard. SUMMARY:Summer Lab 2017 in Austria
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Summer Lab looked into the state of democracy on the local\, national\, European and global level while identifying different dimensions of decline that societies are facing. In this framework\, GEF hosted an international workshop in English on progressive alliances in Europe between social movements\, the Greens and local initiatives from different countries. This included the analysis of responses by governing parties as well as by the right-wing opposition to facets of decline and seek to formulate Green alternatives for the future of European democracies and a united European democracy. \nDifferent formats to create lively debates\nTo engage all participants\, different methods of training were used and as many slots as possible for open debates\, such as  ‘sessions of larger groups’ as well as ‘Open Space’ and free planning sessions\, were provided. By combining the training soft skills such as campaigning\, network analysis\, communication\, moderation methods with policy and the party programme\, the Summer Lab aimed to generate ideas\, new networks and new collaborations between and among Green party members and politicians\, activists and different actors of civil society. Gathering around 100 participants in the idyllic scenery of Kapfenberg in Austria\, its aim was to formulate Green responses to the interplay between social and economic tendencies of decline\, symptoms of crisis and how to strengthen our democracies. \nParallel workshops around ‘Change’\nThe hands-on training were done in four ‘in-depth workshops‘\, with one specific focus each\, which were organised in three phases spread across the two days of the Summer Lab: \na) How to democratise and restructure the Green party\, 30 years after its foundation\, in order to carry forward its objectives and regain its sociopolitical role. \nb) Cities as lively spaces of political contestation: Discussing questions of the public space\, commercialisation of cities and common goods. \nc) What challenges does the current world of employment generate for the mobilisation of citizen’s and how can contribute to a democratisation of the production of wealth? \nd) Narratives for change: How can we create alliances of different forces in Europe\, which oppose the Status Quo while disassociating from the far right at the same time. This workshop will be organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Grüne Akademie Steiermark and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. \nThe ‘Big Picture’\nThe ‘Big Picture’ panel debate helped frame the political and societal context and will give\, alongside the workshops and other forms of discussions\, further food for thought. \nThe panelists will be: \nDr Gael Brustier\, Political scientist and political activist\, France \nMA Carina Altreiter\, Institute of Sociology\, University of Vienna\, Austria \nProf Dr Andreas Fisahn\, Faculty of Law\, University of Bielefeld\, Germany \nMA Gabu Heindl\, Architect and City Planner\, Austria \nMA Hanna Lichtenberger\, Institute for International Politics\, University of Vienna\, Austria \nProf em. Dr Klaus Offe\, Hertie School of Governance\, Berlin\, Germany \nIt is hoped that through the Summer Lab\, individual projects by participants on the basis of those new networks and alliances will be initiated\, and discussions on a progressive future of Europe\, strategies to fight the far right\, and on progressive populism in Europe will be continued afterwards\, while integrating local and national initiatives with European struggles and future European activities. \nFor the full programme (available in German only)\, please click here. \n  \nRegistration: closed since 31 May. Stay tuned for the outcomes of the event! \nDate/Time: 14-16 July \nPlace: Kapfenberg\, Upper Styria (Austria) \n

SUMMARY:“Europe after Brexit. Will a green transition still be possible?” (Poland)
DESCRIPTION:Theme:\nBrexit will have a huge impact on the UK and EU economies and on virtually every area of policy\, which increases the need for public discussion of that impact and the choices that will have to be made to deal with it. Beyond that\, it calls into question the coherence and effectiveness of the EU as a polity\, and as a vehicle for the Green movement. Greens are committed to the belief that European countries can make the transition to sustainability more quickly as a coordinated polity (the EU) than as individual states or societies but this assumption may need to be re-examined. \nThe event is a part of the ongoing transnational project “The potential impact of Brexit on the prospects for a Green transition in Europe” which attempts to support the much-needed public discussion of Brexit’s impact on individual Member States\, as well as on the EU level\, while exploring what this means for the Green movements’ endeavour in the transition to sustainability. \nThis debate took place during the Green Summer Academy in Puszczykowo\, Poland\, organised with the support of Fundacja Strefa Zieleni.  It featured a discussion amongst prominent politicians and experts listed below. The debate was moderated by Ewa Sufin-Jacquemart (Fundacja Strefa Zielenie) and Bartłomiej Kozek (Editorial Board Green European Journal). \nSpeakers:\n\nVideo introduction by Philippe Lamberts (MEP Greens/EFA);\nDebate with Dr Ray Cunningham (Green House Think Tank\, UK)\, Lucile Schmid (GEF/Fondation de l’Écolgie Politique\, France)\, Marek Kossakowski (Partia Zieloni)\, Kuba Gogolewski (Koalicja Rozwój TAK – odkrywki NIE).\n\nRegistration:\nTo register for the Summer Academy of Fundacja Strefa Zieleni\, please send an email to: Ewa Sufin-Jacquemart at ewa.sufin@strefazieleni.org \n
