SUMMARY:Telling the Story: Getting Young Green Voices Heard at EYC
DESCRIPTION:This event was a part of the programme of the European Youth Conference in Gdańsk hosted with Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung office in Warsaw. \nContext\nAusterity\, populism\, illiberalism\, corruption\, nationalism\, xenophobia – all around us today we see obstacles to reaching an open and progressive society. Crackdowns on media\, freedom of expression and civil liberties are all threats to democracy that exacerbate these trends. Now\, more than ever\, the voices of young people need to be heard – yet they are all too often marginalised\, ignored and dismissed. In addition\, the volume of information available\, through new forms of media\, and the circulation of so-called ‘fake news’ make it harder than ever for all citizens\, not just the young\, to obtain reliable\, trustworthy information. In this challenging context\, how can young writers stand out as progressive voices communicating with integrity? \nObjectives\nThis workshop aimed to give participants some tips and tools to make their voice heard. From coming up with an angle to turn an important topic into a compelling news story\, to pitching their proposal and getting their work published – we’ll walked them through the steps to get their story out there. Participants got the chance to start working on a story of their own\, and were invited to share their own experiences with writing\, communicating and getting publishing. \nWe also discussed some controversial questions such as how to be a credible voice whilst taking a political position\, and the role that alternative media can play to shed light on the topics overlooked by the mainstream media. \nThe workshop was moderated by Beatrice White (deputy editor of the Green European Journal) and Julia Lagoutte (editorial assistant at the Green European Journal).

SUMMARY:European Youth Conference 2017 in Gdańsk
DESCRIPTION:The three-day Conference in Gdańsk addressed issues including globalisation and European and nationalist answers to it. From  24 to 26 July\, we explored the current challenges to open societies and inclusive democracies\, and how people risk being divided along lines of integration and identity. Moreover\, the programme included practical workshops and ample space for networking.   \nWe discussed important points of reference and processes that are shaping the worldview of engaged young Europeans\, who on an everyday basis are searching for ways to make a socially responsible\, just and sustainable Europe happen\, and also focus on the causes of and reactions to growing feelings of uncertainty\, injustice and fear in EU member states in a beautiful setting at the Baltic Sea.\n \nGEF Workshops\nThe Green European Foundation contributed to this conference with three relevant workshops: \n\nWIDEN YOUR OUTLOOK – NETWORKING SESSION (Tuesday\, 25 July\, 15h-17h): To face today’s challenges\, it is crucial that grassroots movements and activists connect with each other and collaborate to strengthen their impact. This session reflected the needs of youth leaders to expand their network and identify resources which the other organisations/ participants present at the event can offer them.\nONLINE LEARNING FOR GREEN POLITICS (Tuesday\, 25th of July\, 17h30-19h00): During this workshop\, we shared the experience of Green European Foundation in developing e-learning programmes. Furthermore\, the workshop provided an interactive space for exploring ways in which the participants can make use of new (online) technologies to advance their own learning and activities.\nTELLING THE STORY: GETTING YOUNG GREEN VOICES HEARD (Wednesday\, 26 July\, 11h-13h): This workshop aimed to give participants some tips and tools to make their voice heard. From coming up with an angle to turn an important topic into a compelling news story\, to pitching their proposal and getting their work published – we walked them through the steps to get their story out there.\n\n More Information \nOther useful information can be found here: http://calendar.boell.de/de/event/european-youth-conference or you can send an email to eyc2017@pl.boell.org. \n\nRegistration: Applications closed on 30 April 2017 \nDate: 24 to 26 July 2017 \nVenue: Europejskie Centrum Solidarności I European Solidarity Centre\, Gdańsk (Poland)

SUMMARY:Summer Lab 2017 in Austria
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Summer Lab looked into the state of democracy on the local\, national\, European and global level while identifying different dimensions of decline that societies are facing. In this framework\, GEF hosted an international workshop in English on progressive alliances in Europe between social movements\, the Greens and local initiatives from different countries. This included the analysis of responses by governing parties as well as by the right-wing opposition to facets of decline and seek to formulate Green alternatives for the future of European democracies and a united European democracy. \nDifferent formats to create lively debates\nTo engage all participants\, different methods of training were used and as many slots as possible for open debates\, such as  ‘sessions of larger groups’ as well as ‘Open Space’ and free planning sessions\, were provided. By combining the training soft skills such as campaigning\, network analysis\, communication\, moderation methods with policy and the party programme\, the Summer Lab aimed to generate ideas\, new networks and new collaborations between and among Green party members and politicians\, activists and different actors of civil society. Gathering around 100 participants in the idyllic scenery of Kapfenberg in Austria\, its aim was to formulate Green responses to the interplay between social and economic tendencies of decline\, symptoms of crisis and how to strengthen our democracies. \nParallel workshops around ‘Change’\nThe hands-on training were done in four ‘in-depth workshops‘\, with one specific focus each\, which were organised in three phases spread across the two days of the Summer Lab: \na) How to democratise and restructure the Green party\, 30 years after its foundation\, in order to carry forward its objectives and regain its sociopolitical role. \nb) Cities as lively spaces of political contestation: Discussing questions of the public space\, commercialisation of cities and common goods. \nc) What challenges does the current world of employment generate for the mobilisation of citizen’s and how can contribute to a democratisation of the production of wealth? \nd) Narratives for change: How can we create alliances of different forces in Europe\, which oppose the Status Quo while disassociating from the far right at the same time. This workshop will be organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Grüne Akademie Steiermark and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. \nThe ‘Big Picture’\nThe ‘Big Picture’ panel debate helped frame the political and societal context and will give\, alongside the workshops and other forms of discussions\, further food for thought. \nThe panelists will be: \nDr Gael Brustier\, Political scientist and political activist\, France \nMA Carina Altreiter\, Institute of Sociology\, University of Vienna\, Austria \nProf Dr Andreas Fisahn\, Faculty of Law\, University of Bielefeld\, Germany \nMA Gabu Heindl\, Architect and City Planner\, Austria \nMA Hanna Lichtenberger\, Institute for International Politics\, University of Vienna\, Austria \nProf em. Dr Klaus Offe\, Hertie School of Governance\, Berlin\, Germany \nIt is hoped that through the Summer Lab\, individual projects by participants on the basis of those new networks and alliances will be initiated\, and discussions on a progressive future of Europe\, strategies to fight the far right\, and on progressive populism in Europe will be continued afterwards\, while integrating local and national initiatives with European struggles and future European activities. \nFor the full programme (available in German only)\, please click here. \n  \nRegistration: closed since 31 May. Stay tuned for the outcomes of the event! \nDate/Time: 14-16 July \nPlace: Kapfenberg\, Upper Styria (Austria) \n

SUMMARY:“Europe after Brexit. Will a green transition still be possible?” (Poland)
DESCRIPTION:Theme:\nBrexit will have a huge impact on the UK and EU economies and on virtually every area of policy\, which increases the need for public discussion of that impact and the choices that will have to be made to deal with it. Beyond that\, it calls into question the coherence and effectiveness of the EU as a polity\, and as a vehicle for the Green movement. Greens are committed to the belief that European countries can make the transition to sustainability more quickly as a coordinated polity (the EU) than as individual states or societies but this assumption may need to be re-examined. \nThe event is a part of the ongoing transnational project “The potential impact of Brexit on the prospects for a Green transition in Europe” which attempts to support the much-needed public discussion of Brexit’s impact on individual Member States\, as well as on the EU level\, while exploring what this means for the Green movements’ endeavour in the transition to sustainability. \nThis debate took place during the Green Summer Academy in Puszczykowo\, Poland\, organised with the support of Fundacja Strefa Zieleni.  It featured a discussion amongst prominent politicians and experts listed below. The debate was moderated by Ewa Sufin-Jacquemart (Fundacja Strefa Zielenie) and Bartłomiej Kozek (Editorial Board Green European Journal). \nSpeakers:\n\nVideo introduction by Philippe Lamberts (MEP Greens/EFA);\nDebate with Dr Ray Cunningham (Green House Think Tank\, UK)\, Lucile Schmid (GEF/Fondation de l’Écolgie Politique\, France)\, Marek Kossakowski (Partia Zieloni)\, Kuba Gogolewski (Koalicja Rozwój TAK – odkrywki NIE).\n\nRegistration:\nTo register for the Summer Academy of Fundacja Strefa Zieleni\, please send an email to: Ewa Sufin-Jacquemart at ewa.sufin@strefazieleni.org \n

SUMMARY:Hope and cope - Green Summer Academy in Poland
DESCRIPTION:Context:\nWe meet in an extremely important year for EU\, with the Brexit negotiations\, the elections in France\, Germany and Netherlands\, the unpredictability of the new US President Donald Trump and the crisis of democracy in Poland and Hungary.  This generates various factors that will directly and indirectly impact the progress of the global climate policy and the implementation of the Paris Agreement. Next year’s municipal election in Poland makes us focus on the role of regions and cities in the transition to low carbon societies\, and other progressive transformations. We checked if the European Pact of Amsterdam can play a role in this transition. One of the cornerstones of the green vision of the world is sustainable development\, for which the preservation  of pure environment and of nature rich in biodiversity for the future generations is as important as the short term economic efficiency and social justice. \nTherefore\, our Green Summer Universities gave the participants an opportunity to enter into a direct relationship with living nature and thus provide them with additional knowledge\, sensitivity and motivation for its protection and political representation of its interests.  Due to the mega projects of transeuropean waterways that threat the principal Polish rivers\, together with badly implemented Water Frame Directive\, the water ecosystems were at the center of  the ecological outdoor expeditions during this third Green Summer Academy\, located in the heart of the Natural Park of Great Poland. \nProgramme:\nThe three day event consisted of lectures\, debates and practical workshops focusing on the following themes: \n\nPuszczykowo theme;\nGreen economy seminar;\nGreen and progressive city\, local governance theme;\nSkills and empowerment;\nClimate change and Paris Agreement theme;\nPublic debate in Poznań.\n\n  \nThis summer school was executed with the support of the Green European Foundation and Heinrich Böll Foundation in Warsaw. \nRegistration: Via email to ewa.sufin@strefazieleni.org \nDate: 13 to 16 July 2017 \nPlace:  Puszczykowo near Poznan\, Poland \n

SUMMARY:Fundraising Training: Migration\, Refugees & Asylum Seekers Projects
DESCRIPTION:In 2016\, GEF and Greens-EFA collaborated on the ‘Guide to EU Funding on Migration and Asylum’\, a publication available in 16 languages\, which showcases EU funds available to local activists and organisations across Europe. In 2017\, the need was identified to organise a training which allows organisations working on these topics to exchange best practices\, at the same time with reinforcing their fundraising capacities. \nThe training will provide information on European Commission funds such as the Asylum\, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF)\, as well as a solid background and practical experience on innovative fundraising techniques available to organisations with reduced means\, such as crowdfunding\, experiential fundraising\, etc. \nLast but not least\, this training will be an opportunity for foundations\, movements and NGOs working on topics around migration\, refugees and asylum seekers to exchange and gain insights into the political dimension of migration\, looking at the local\, national and European level. Participants will get the chance to exchange with policy-makers and with refugees and asylum seekers themselves (one of the training days will be organised in a refugee centre in Athens). \nParticipants’ profile\nThe training is addressed to staff working in European foundations\, organisations\, NGOs and movements who work on migration\, refugees and asylum seekers projects and who are looking to expand their skills-set and contacts in order to do successful fundraising. It is targeting all organisations working to provide solutions for the arrival and integration of refugees\, asylum seekers and migrants. \nThere will be maximum 25 places on the training and the applicants should fulfil the following conditions. They should: \n\nHave experience in working on projects with migrants/ asylum seekers/ refugees or the clear interest in initiating such projects.\nIdeally be responsible for fundraising within their organisation.\nHave the ability to use English as the working language throughout the training.\nHave the availability to attend the full duration of the training.\nShow interest and motivation to fulfil an active role during the training and to explore possibilities to collaborate with other organisations active in the field.\nRepresent an organisation based in a European country.\n\nObjectives\nBy the end of the training\, participants will: \n\nExpand their knowledge on the political dimension of this topic.\nStrengthen and broaden their network of actors and organisations engaged in work on the topics of migration\, refugees and asylum seekers.\nGain practical skills on fundraising for their projects in this field.\n\nWorking methods\nThe training will combine formal and non-formal learning methods\, with a clear focus on the latter as all sessions are focused on group formation to provide space for exchange of experiences and best practices among participants\, and allow them to develop project ideas together. To be successful\, this will require participants to have an active input in sharing their own knowledge\, and to be willing to learn new skills from their trainers and from each other. The working methods will include: \n\nSmall group discussions\nVerbal and visual presentations\nPlenary debates\nReflection periods\nA study visit and other joint activities\n\nVenue\, timing and duration\nThe training will last 3 full days\, starting on Thursday\, 28 September 2017\, in the afternoon and ending on Sunday\, 1 October 2017\, in the afternoon. The training will be organised in Athens\, Greece. \nFinancial information\nThe expenses in relation to the training will be covered by GEF and the Greens-EFA. This includes food and accommodation\, as well as all training costs. \nTravel expenses (home-to-home) shall be made by each participant individually and will be reimbursed afterwards in accordance to the GEF guidelines on travel reimbursement\, which will be communicated to the selected participants in advance. \nApplication and selection of participants\nThe application is now closed! \nParticipants will be selected on the basis of: \n\nThe profile of participants as described above;\nThe experience\, expectations and training needs of applicants;\nThe desire to create a balance in the range of geographical areas represented (while taking into account that there is more activity and hence need for funding in particular geographic areas)\, as well as a gender balance.\n\nSuccessful applicants will receive confirmation of their participation\, followed by more detailed information. \nThis training is realised with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. \nFor more information\, please contact the Project Coordinator\, Carlotta.Weber@gef.eu.

SUMMARY:"Green Values\, Religion and Secularism" in Dublin
DESCRIPTION:The project Green Values\, Religion and Secularism\nFollowing the successful implementation of the project Green Values\, Religion and Secularism over the past two years\, and the publication of a book under the same name\, this conference addressed themes which arose from the seminars held during the past year to promote the book\, and which were outlined in the concluding project report at the end of 2016. \nThe Conference\nIn an era of trending populism\, the conference intended to remind a wide audience of both academia and Green activists of the necessity to consider the values underpinning European democracy and civil society and to engage in a dialogue to educate a wide public on Green viewpoints on how these values can be practiced in the world today. The event aimed at engaging in dialogue with academics on and religious communities on Green values and with Greens on the topic of religious and philosophical values. Therefore\, the debate built on the following themes\, which emerged during the project activities over the past two years. \nProgramme\nThe green critique of modernity approaches a religious critique of humanism\, understood as humans being the measure of all things. Green values are also critical of the idea of the isolated individual as the basis of social and economic life. What are the core values which inspire ecological and social activism? \n9:30-13:00h MORNING SESSION \nWelcome and Introduction: Andrew Pierce on behalf of the Irish School of Ecumenics Trinity College and Nuala Ahern on behalf of Green European Foundation and GFI. \nChair Dr Geraldine Smyth (Adjunct Associate Professor\, ISE): ‘What are the core values which inspire ecological and social activism?’ \n\nDr Erica Meijers (Theologian and Co-Editor of ‘Green Values\, Religion and Secularism’): the work of the German poet Novalis shows that the critical tradition of the Enlightenment and the longing for a world that is whole has always belonged together. They can both contribute to an inclusive humanism today.\nDr Andreas Weber (Biologist and cultural change expert): Only a science\, politics and economics that puts the living world at its heart will be truly sustainable. SUMMARY:What impact will Brexit have on the ecological transition in Europe? (Paris)
DESCRIPTION:On March 29\, 2017\, Theresa May\, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom\, triggered article 50 of the Treaty on the European Union and thereby activated the procedure of withdrawal from the European Union\, which the country had joined in 1973.  Amongst all the controversies around Brexit\, there is also the question on the impact of the UK’s withdrawal on ecological policies in Europe. Climate\, energy\, protection of biodiversity\, agriculture and environmental standards are the range of policy fields concerned and not all domains are affected in the same way. \nHow will ecological policies evolve in an EU without the United Kingdom? Will Brexit change the European civil society that is mobilising on environmental issues? \nThe language of the event was French. Speakers were Viviane Gravey (PhD and Lecturer at Queen’s University Belfast) and Claude Turmes (MEP in the Greens/EFA). Debate was facilitated by Benoit Monange\, director of FEP. \n  \nMore Information\nRegistration: Please sign up for the event here \nDate/Time : 27 June 2017\, 18:30-20:00 \nVenue: Maison de l’Europe\,  29 Avenue de Villiers\, 75017 Paris\, France

SUMMARY:To Migrate Is Human
DESCRIPTION:The debate provided a temporal and spatial tour of the facts around migration beyond the current primarily negative narrative. \nAlthough migration is a human phenomenon and has always taken place\, the global crises\, such as the Syrian civil war\, and migratory movements over the last decades have led to a revitalisation of the Nation State and to the return of borders. \nThe event aimed to explore historical examples and lessons of integration to highlight a way forward by proposing a constructive way to deal with migratory movements. By hearing the stories of migrants\, the benefits for society were made clear. The event is a part of GEF’s transnational project in 2017\, which wants to contribute to the development of a New Narrative on Migration for Europe. \n  \n  \nMore Information\nRegistration:  by sending an email to: greeneconomicsinstitute@yahoo.com \nDate: 12 June 2017 (The event is taking place as part of the Green Economics Institute’s Annual Conference from 10 to 12 June) \nVenue: St Hugh’s College\, University of Oxford\, United Kingdom

SUMMARY:(W)E-Democracy - Will Parliament survive the digital era?
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of our ongoing transnational project Reclaim the Commons which this year has a special focus on digital commons under the title (W)E-Democracy. More specifically\, this year we foster  the understanding of the possibilities that emerge in the digital age for citizens to organise themselves in innovative ways and to generate influence and even co-create policy decisions that affect their lives. \nThe 21st century democracy in Europe is in dire straits. Citizens feel disconnected with politics\, and a growing distrust has led to the lowest participation in European elections ever in 2014. According to the latest Eurobarometer\, a staggering 54% of citizens thinks that their voice doesn’t count in the EU. Democracy seems overdue for a profound upgrade. How can we reverse the erosion? \nOur digitising society forms a fertile breeding ground for citizens to get organized in innovative ways\, and gain more power to influence and even co-create policy decisions that affect their lives. Digital initiatives like online knowledge centres and participation platforms are popping up all over Europe. What is the potential of these technologies to transform and rethink democracy? What are the threats? And how can local governments anticipate to this growing tendency? \n  \n#WEdemocracy\n(W)E-Democracy takes a look from different angles at promising (citizen) initiatives who employ digital tools to strengthen democracy. We invited Lina Dencik from Cardiff University to talk about citizen rights in a digitised society. We then discussed two successful online platforms: CitizenLab\, introduced to us by founder Wietse Van Ransbeeck and DemocracyOS France\, presented by its President Caroline Corbal. Next\, Xabier E. Barandiaran and Arnau Monterde from Decidim Barcelona shared their experiences with open democracy on city level. Last but not least\, Imade Annouri\, Green Member of Flemish Parliament\, and Dóra Björt Guðjónsdóttir\, Chair of the Young Pirates in Iceland\, reflected on the possibilities of e-democracy for political parties. \n  \nProgramme:\n13:00h:  Introduction (Dirk Holemans\, Coordinator of Oikos and Coordinator of the GEF transnational project Reclaim the Commons) \n13:20h: Young Europeans fighting surveillance (Lea Caillere) \n13:40h: Citizen rights in a digital era (Lina Dencik) \n14:25h: – Digital participation: CitizenLab (Wietse Van Ransbeeck)  \n– Digital commons: DemocracyOS (Caroline Corbal) \n15:20h:  break \n15:35h:  E-democratic cities (Arnau Monterde and Xabier E. Barandiaran) \n16:05h:  Digital parties – closing panel (Dóra Björt Guðjónsdóttir and Imade Annouri) \n17:00h:  closing drink \nMore information on the key speakers can be found on the Oikos website. \n  \nLocation & Date:\nTHE VENUE OF THE THINKING DAY HAS BEEN CHANGED! \nThe event will take place at L42\, Rue de la Loi 42\, on Friday\, the 26 May\, from 13h onwards. \n  \nRegistration:\nThe event is free of charge. Please register here. \n  \nNot able to attend the event in Brussels?\nThe event will be livestreamed by our partner foundations Fondation de l’Écologie Politique (Paris\, France)\, Fundacja Strefa Zieleni (Warsaw\, Poland) as well as the Cooperation and Development Network Eastern Europe (Belgrade\, Serbia). \n

SUMMARY:Digitised Security – How to Read the Surveillance Discourse and Fight it!
DESCRIPTION:The seminar took place from 24th – 30th April in Bosnia. It was inspired by a digital [x] webinar that looked at the political reactions sparked by the terrorist attacks in Paris and how the tension between security and freedom was framed by agenda setters. A year later\, censorship and mass surveillance are becoming the norm\, and we want to fight this: we want to change the discourse to achieve better policy and give everyone the tools to protect their freedom\, even in hostile environments. \nThe programme was based on the principles of non-formal education and intercultural learning. We strove for active\, inclusive and direct communication and transfer of knowledge. The sessions were balanced between theoretical inputs\, workshops\, role-plays\, debates\, discussions\, reflection and other interactive methods of learning. \nThe seminar aspired to: \n\nExplore how recent events have led to fear being instrumentalised to restrict our online freedoms;\nAnalyse how online censorship and mass surveillance are justified by governing bodies and why these policies are ineffective at increasing security;\nSee how they harm personal freedoms and democracy;\nLook at why anonymity and privacy is important for oppressed and minority groups to avoid persecution and harassment;\nDevelop skills to use software that protects us from surveillance and overcomes censorship.\n\nDuring the week-long event\, 40 young people from all over Europe came together and aimed at creating a vibrant environment to produce sustainable and long lasting collaboration to fight for common digital rights! \nThe event reported can be downloaded here. \nMore information\nDate: 24 – 30 April 2017\nLocation: (close to) Sarajevo\, Bosnia and Herzegovina\nDuration: 6 working days\nWorking language: English\nNumber of participants: 40 \nCall for applications closed!\nCall for Participants\nProject Description\nAGENDA \nThis project was supported by the Youth Department of the Council of Europe\, Green Forum (Sweden)\, Green European Foundation and Terry Reintke (Member of the European Parliament\, The Greens/EFA).

SUMMARY:Greens in Government
DESCRIPTION:The Alliance 90/The Greens Party has succeeded in taking over governmental responsibility in the majority of the 16 federal states. This is a great success for the party. However\, in order to remain successful and to encourage general confidence in politics\, a sober look at the factors which led to the success and which will continue to do so in the future is required. How does good governance work? How does government participation change the decision-making processes and the political objectives of a party? How does good cooperation between those responsible in federal and state government function?\n\nParting from the experience of German Greens in coalition governments\, we had a discussion with representatives of different Green parties with hands-on government experience. You can watch the entire event in English on demand here.\n\n\nSpeakers:\n\nArne Jungjohann\, Energy Analyst & Political Scientist\, author of “Greens in Government”\nChristine Milne\, former Australian Senator & leader of the Australian Greens\nGustav Fridolin\, Minister of Education Sweden\, Swedish Green Party Co-spokesperson\nModeration: Marta Loja Neves\, Editorial Board\, Green European Journal\n\n\nWhen: Friday\, 31 March 2017\, 18:30 – 20:00\n\nWhere: Room 4A\, Global Greens & European Greens Congress\, Arena and Convention Centre\, room 4A\, Kings Dock\, Liverpool L3 4FP\, United Kingdom

SUMMARY:Migration & Refugees: A New Narrative for Europe
DESCRIPTION:The workshop addressed the need to develop a new and positive narrative on migration and refugees to create public interest and counter the anti-immigration and xenophobic rhetoric in European countries. The event was held on Friday\, the 2nd of December\, between 19h00 and 20h30 at the 25th Council Meeting of the EGP in Glasgow. It featured an insightful debate with relevant speakers\, listed here: \n\nNoureddine Erradi\, Chairman\, Integration for All\nMaria Giovanna Manieri\, Advisor on Civil Liberties\, Justice and Home Affairs\, Greens-EFA Group in the European Parliament\nOlga Kikou\, Director of Green Institute Greece and GEF Board Member\n\nThe debate will be moderated by Susanne Rieger\, Europe representative\, Foundacio Nous Horitzons & GEF Co-President. \nBACKGROUND: \nIn 2016\, the majority of European citizens see the “migration crisis” as the biggest threat to the EU\, ahead of the threat of terrorism. While the majority of EU citizens are in favor of an EU policy on migration\, just above a third of Europeans say that immigration of people from outside the EU evokes a positive feeling while a majority of citizens have negative views. This development in public opinion goes hand-in-hand with the emergence of right-wing populist movements and parties who propose a narrative around migration based on feelings of fear and uncertainty. \nThroughout 2016\, the Green European Foundation\, together with Fondacio Nous Horitzons (Catalonia)\, Green Foundation Greece\, EQUO (Spain)\, Green Economics Institute (UK) and Institute for Political Ecology (Croatia) developed a project to highlight the local context as a space in which the European and national realities intersect in their impact on the well-being of refugees and asylum seekers. As a result of this project\, the need to develop a new narrative on migration was identified as a means to counter the current negative sentiments on the topic. \n

SUMMARY:Launch of the new edition of the Green European Journal
DESCRIPTION:A panel will discuss the diverse understandings of the commons and examine their transformative potential. The debate will feature relevant speakers\, such as MEP Molly Scott Cato\, lawyer and social geographer Daniela Festa\, founder of the Peer-to-Peer Foundation Michel Bauwens\, and Professor of Sociology Christian Laval. \nAn investigation into the commons reveals the wide-ranging spectrum of definitions and applications of this concept that exist across Europe. From urban public spaces to natural ecosystems and the virtual world – the concept of the commons seems to be giving rise to new forms of organisation\, collaboration\, and management of resources. Yet from the numerous local initiatives\, social movements and governance models associated with this term – is it possible to identify the outline of a commons-based approach that could form the basis of a broad cross-societal response to the failures of the current system? \nJoin us for a discussion with MEP and economist Molly Scott Cato\,  founder of the Peer-to-Peer Foundation Michel Bauwens\, lawyer and social geographer Daniela Festa\, and expert on the far-reaching social impacts of neoliberalism Christian Laval. The debate will be moderated by Oikos coordinator and author Dirk Holemans. The event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Oikos think tank and Etopia. \n  \nPlease register for the event\, by clicking here\, join the facebook group here. \nInformation about the speakers: \n– Molly Scott Cato is the first Green MEP for the South West of England and Gibraltar\, elected in May 2014. She is a leading member of Green House think tank\, and formerly professor of strategy and sustainability at the University of Roehampton. She has written several books including Green Economics (2009)\, Environment and Economy (2011) and The Bioregional Economy (2012) as well as numerous academic papers. \n– Michel Bauwens is a peer-to-peer theorist\, writer\, and the founder of the P2P (Peer-to-Peer) Foundation\, a global network of researchers\, activists\, and citizens monitoring and promoting actions geared towards a transition to a Commons-based society. \n– Daniela Festa is a lawyer\, social geographer\, and activist. She has a PhD degree in urban and social geography and Post-Doctoral Fellowship in social sciences (EHESS)\, Paris. She recently joined an European Research Council project at Sciences Po (Paris) on “inclusive properties”. SUMMARY:ECOPRO Seminar in Zagreb
DESCRIPTION:This event is a part of our transnational project ECOPRO (“Ecological Production in a Post-Growth Society”)\, which this year has a particular focus on the sustainable work. The seminar was entitled “Future of Work in Ecological Transition”\, as it provided an analysis of impacts of the ecological transition on work\, working conditions and generally transformation of labour that are generated by environmental challenges. \nTransition of both economy and industry to (more) ecological\, just and sustainable modes of production is already – with more or less success – taking place globally and in Europe. In some cases it takes forms of technological revolution\, in other it relates to slower transformatory processes that deserve adaptation of societies\, citizens\, workers. As this change generates irreversible impacts on work conditions\, quality of work\, job security\, time\, education system it is also opportunity for new ecology of work that will improve quality of life\, social equity and work conditions. Taking into account new impetus for industrial policy in Croatia\, this seminar will aim to present different views on conditions for creating sustainable work in Croatia. \nFurthermore\, this event had a strong focus on exploring directions in which work conditions can be improved throughout ecological and just transition; ecologists\, trade unionists\, politicians and experts from different will share their insights and experiences about ways in which work conditions\, quality of work and social criteria can be improved alongside with fundamental changes in the systems of production and consumption. \nPROGRAMME: \n11h30 – 13h00 Introduction \n\nVedran Horvat\, Institute for Political Ecology\, Zagreb\nBeate Littig\, Institute for Human Sciences\, Vienna\nToni Vidan\, European Economic and Social Committee\, Brussels/Green Action/FoE Croatia\, Zagreb\nAna Maria Boromisa\, Institute for Development and International Relations\, Zagreb\nBojana Percan\, Croatian Union of Independent Trade Unions\, Croatia\n\n13h00 – 14h00 Lunch break \n14h00 – 16h00 Debate \n\nBranko Ančić\, Institute for Social Research\, Zagreb\nKarolina Leaković\,  International Secretary\, Socialdemocratic party of Croatia\nSiniša Vinković\, European Trade Union Confederation\n\nThis event was open to public and free of charge.

SUMMARY:Urban Commons - Commoning the City
DESCRIPTION:Commons as a concept and practice entered into mainstream after Elinor Ostrom received in 2009 Nobel Award in Economics for empirically proving that communities can sustainably manage natural resources without direct influence of the state and the market. Concept of commons was extended for also human-made resources and even immaterial resources and for different contexts including the urban. More radical and critical approaches of commons emerged especially in the context of various urban social movements fighting against privatisation\, commodification and commercialisation of cities. Practices of self-governance and community governance of urban resources were introduced or reintroduced in cities all around Europe. In Athens there is a network of solidarity commoning practices providing food\, housing and even health service to people who are left behind after years of austerity politics. In Bologna the local government even adopted regulation so communities can engage in collaboration to produce and regenerate urban commons. In Barcelona citizen platform called “Barcelona in Common” won the local elections and is trying to establish framework for urban commons governance in different sectors. \nThis seminar presented examples of urban commoning in cities of Madrid\, Berlin\, Maribor\, Belgrade and Zagreb. It provided forum for exchange on various inspirational urban commons practices as well as confrontational tactics against the enclosure of the urban commons and privatisation of the urban public goods. Seminar aimed to tackle the debate among participants on how can urban commons and self-governance models be enhanced\, supported and protected in cities of the region. \nPROGRAMME:  \n\n10h00 – 10h30 Introduction to theory of the commons – Tomislav Tomašević (Institute for Political Ecology)\n10h30 – 11h30 Urban commons practices in Madrid and Berlin – Lucia Lois (El Patio Maravillas) and Marco Clausen (Nachbar¬schafts¬akademie)\n11h30 – 12h00 Discussion\n12:h0 – 12h45 Lunch \n12h45 – 13h45 Commoning the city in Belgrade and Maribor – Iva Ćukić (Ministarstvo prostora) and Matic Primc (Iniciativa mestni zbor)\n13h45 – 15h30 – Discussion\n15h30 – 16h00 – Break\n16h00 – 17h30 – How to enhance the urban commons in local context? (open roundtable) – Iva Marčetić\, Mislav Žitko\, Alma Midžić\, Teodor Celakoski\, Emina Višnić\, Enes Ćerimagić\, Dušica Radojčić\, Nikola Zdunić\, Cvjeta Bišćević\, Svibor Jančić\n\nThis event is a part of our transnational project “Reclaim the Commons”\, which revives the debate around the commons as a fundamental part of the Green political ideology across Europe. \nThis event was open to public and free of charge.

This opportunity will include 5 local training around Czech Republic\, during the following dates: October 20-30; December 9-11; February 10-12; March 24-26; April 21-23. In addition to these dates\, this project offers a study visit to Brussels\, which will happen in late January 2017. \nApplications are open until the 23rd of September via this page.
