SUMMARY:"Green Values\, Religion and Secularism" Debate in Warsaw
DESCRIPTION:This seminar is part of the Green European Foundation project “Green Values\, Religion and Secularism”\, which promotes and serves as a space for the debate within the Greens towards a more coherent stance on the changing role of religion in European society. The project is based on the book with the same name\, published by the Green European Foundation together with six national Green foundations in 2015. \nThe debate in Warsaw was opened by Erica Meijers\, co-editor of the book “Green Values\, Religion and Secularism” and editor-in-chief of the Journal De Helling\, published by the Dutch Green Foundation Bureau De Helling\, who provided more context on the development of the book. Bartłomiej Kozek\, journalist of Zielone Wiadomości\, delivered insights into the discussion around this topic within the Polish society. Speakers such as Lucas Skurczyński (Protestant theologian and editor of Miesięcznik Ewangelicki)\, Adam Ostolski (Co-leader of the Polish Green Party Partia Zieloni)\, Maria Roczaczewska (sociologist from the University of Warsaw) contributed to this interesting debate and shed light on issues around this topic in the context of Poland and Europe.

SUMMARY:"Degrowth in the Parliaments" Panel Debate in Budapest (VIDEO Available)
DESCRIPTION:THEME:   \nCould we say that degrowth has entered parliamentary politics? Notably several party figures\, especially in Europe\, have raised the issue of degrowth in their parties and in the parliaments. \nFor this session\, we invited outstanding politicians from various European countries and political parties that\, in different ways\, have engaged with degrowth. First\, we asked them to share with the degrowth community the experiences they have had while attempting to promote degrowth within their parties and/or parliaments looking specifically at the opportunities and challenges they are facing.  Second\, we wanted to know what opportunities they see for the future and whether degrowth could gain momentum in public debates\, electoral campaigns and in the parliaments. Third\, we were eager to understand whether and how the degrowth community\, which includes grassroots activists\, practitioners and researchers\, could eventually support such processes from outside the parliaments. \nThe focus was on the national and European levels. On the one hand\, these levels are potentially very relevant to implement degrowth ideas in a systematic way\, but –on the other hand- they are also places were decision-making processes are complex\, the balance of powers not favorable\, and mainstream ideology very strong. \nSPEAKERS: \n\nPhilippe Lamberts\, Member of the European Parliament and Co-Spokeperson of the Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament\, member of Ecolo (Belgium);\nSabine Leidig\, former director of Attac Germany\, and Member of the Bundestag for Die Linke (Germany);\nFlorent Marcellesi\, Spokesperson of EQUO in the European Parliament (Spain);\nRebeka Szabó\, Vice-Mayor of the 14th district of Budapest – Zugló.\n\nMODERATORS: \n\nAurélie Maréchal\, Director of the Green European Foundation;\nFederico Demaria\, researcher at Research & Degrowth\, and ICTA UAB.\n\nVENUE: Corvinus University auditorium\, Budapest \nTIME: Friday\, the 2nd of September 2016\, 16h30 – 18h30 \nVIDEO: Watch this relevant debate in English or Hungarian.

SUMMARY:ECOPRO Debate at Budapest Degrowth Week: Work out of the box! (VIDEO Available)
DESCRIPTION:This event was a part of our ECOPRO project\, which this year has a special focus on work and its role in the post-growth society. \nTheme: \nThe world has reached the “Limits to Growth” – we are in the status of overshoot\, overuse\, overconsumption\, overpopulation. Our event on the 1st of September will be held 3 weeks after the Overshoot Day 2016 (the 8th of August)\, we will have used as much from nature as our planet can renew in the whole year. We need a new vision of a post-growth economy that fits again within the planetary boundaries while satisfying real societal needs\, guaranteeing well-being and a future for all. \nAmong many others\, we need to rethink our concept of WORK. Can we provide real\, meaningful\, added-value-generating jobs for all active-age men and women of the over 7 billion inhabitants of the Earth? If yes\, how? If not\, how shall we redefine and widen the meaning of WORK? \nWork is much more than spending time at a job – it includes running a household\, caring for children and elderly\, helping in the community and other forms of voluntary and political work. To grasp the diversity of work\, a green and feminist understanding of work\, questioning the gender and international division of labour\, is required. \nDoes work equal money? Equal work\, equal pay? Working for a living\, or a better life? What is the future of the work – and what is the work of the future? \nSpeakers: \nThis debate featured Bernadett Szél (Co-chair of Lehet Más a Politika\, Hungary)\, Beate Littig (Researcher at Institute for Advanced Studies\, University of Vienna\, Austria)\, Anne Snick (KU Leuven\, Belgium)\, Dirk Holemans (Coordinator and Editor at tink tank Oikos\, Belgium) and Jonathan Essex (Co-founder of the Green House think tank\, UK). \nVenue: Corvinus University of Budapest – Fôvám tér 8\, Budapest\, Hungary\, 1093 \nTime: 1st of September\, 16h00 – 19h00 \nVIDEO: Watch this debate in English or Hungarian.

SUMMARY:Green Summer Gathering: Edition 2016 in Belgium
DESCRIPTION:This year’s edition of Les Rencontres Ecologiques d’Eté (Green Summer Gathering) featured many insightful workshops\, debates and lectures. Information about the programme and registration is available at Etopia’s website. During this occasion\, the Green European Foundation contributed with two special debates about the present and future of the European Union. \nThe first debate was held on Saturday\, the 27th of August\, from 09h30 to 10h45. This roundtable addressed the “why EU” question: Why the EU? Is the EU dream over? Why should we keep working hard on it? Does it represent the best way to insure progress in Europe? Special inputs on these matters were provided by professor Tanguy de Wilde (University of Louvain). \nOur second debate took place right after – between 10h45 and 12h00\, and focused more on “how EU” question in relation to this year’s challenges\, such as the situation in Greece\, issues with refugee policies and Brexit. How do we re-dynamise the EU project and make it “popular” again? How to tackle and approach this? Should the priority be institutional (more democracy\, more transparency)? Should it be economical? Should we create a different approach to some challenges\, such as the refugee policies? And how to contain the influence of the lobbies in all this? The list of speakers included: \n\nPhilippe Pochet (European Trade Union Institute);\nJean Quatremer (Correspondant at Libe à Bxl);\nJean De munck (Professor of Sociology at UCL);\nVivien Pertusot (Head of IFRI);\nPhilippe Lamberts (Co-President of the Greens/EFA).\n\nBoth debates were held with simultaneous translation in French and English. More information about them can be found on this webpage.

SUMMARY:Green Academy "TIPPING POINTS" in Croatia
DESCRIPTION:Under the title ”Tipping points”\, the fifth edition of this summer university provided 6 days of intensive programme for a very diverse group of 150 participants from more than 20 countries\, including Latin America and U.S. For the first time City of Komiza was hosting the Green Academy\, which programme was conducted in public spaces. \nProgramme was organised in three working modules (Commons\, Degrowth and Climate Justice) and was focused on exchange of theoretical  insights and practical experiences of scholars\, practitioners\, activists and experts.  Intense exchange has taken place between European scholars and their Latin American counterparts which have demonstrated some of the most interesting lessons from previous decade.  Among many relevant speakers\, guests of the Green Academy were Boris Buden\, Hilary Wainright\, Daniel Chavez\, Joan Martinez Alier\, Jagoda Munić\, Pablo Solon\, Giacommo D’Allisa\, Barb Jacobson\, Edgardo Lander\, Kira Vinke\, Branon Andersen and Srećko Horvat. Apart from modules\, participants were also involved in plenary debates where political implications of current political situations were broadly discussed. \nParticipants were able to take part in many cutting edge discussions which are currently relevant at European level and have a first hand experience and exchange with contributors. As a working framework was also relevant for broadening epistemic community gravitating to political ecology at European level and exchange platform between different organisations and groups. It has proven to be a very safe environment to articulate demands for more interesectionality on the Left and for feminisation of politics while at the same time offering visions that comply with ideas of internationalism\, sufficiency and solidarity. \nWorking languages of the academy were Croatian and English. \nThe final programme is available here. \nMORE INFO: \nMore information about this event available at IPE website and Facebook.

SUMMARY:"Balkan Watchdogs: Cross border Environmental Reporting" Workshop in Bulgaria
DESCRIPTION:The workshop’s aim was to support young and active journalists from Bulgaria\, Serbia and Macedonia\, who have an interest in the practice of watchdog journalism\, telling stories of environmental dangers and exploring new sustainable solutions offered by the Green economy. This event is a part of the Journalists and Policy Makers Boost Green Economy project\, organised by the Green European Foundation\, with the support of the BlueLink Foundation (Bulgaria)\, the Association for Sustainable Social-Economic Development Sunrise (Macedonia) and Drugi Novi Centar Association (Serbia). \nThe training represented a great opportunity for the young journalists and professionals with an interest in the practice of watchdog journalism in the public interest. It provided the participants with important insights in the cross-border environmental issues in the Balkans and the Green policies as the alternative solutions. This experience served as a platform for knowledge exchange and a chance to enhance the professional skills of the participants. The training was implemented in English. \nThe workshop was facilitated by: Dr. Pavel Antonov\, Chief Editor at the Evromegdan.bg virtual newsroom of the BlueLink foundation; Paul Brown\, Editor\, Climate News Network; Zlatko Simonovski\, researcher and journalist and Beatrice White\, Deputy Editor at Green European Journal. \n  \nPurpose of the Workshop \nWith rule of law and democratic mechanisms failing to protect nature and public interest\, ethical professional watchdog journalism is essential for raising awareness and promoting Green policy solutions in South Eastern European societies. Success stories of environmental and social change\, environmental justice and Green policies advanced by new politicians\, policy-makers and activists fail to effectively reach – and inspire – the general public. \nTherefore\, the workshop aimed to: \n\nBuild on the professional skills and integrity of young and active journalists;\nEngage them creatively and professionally in a virtual newsroom to facilitate authoritative and well-written creative feature articles of environmental change;\nGuide them while they publish and popularise journalistic articles (in text and image) in English and their native languages;\nAllow new policy-makers\, Green politicians\, academic and civil society experts to foster journalists’ understanding of available success cases\, technological and policy solutions.

SUMMARY:"Crossing Borders - Refugee and Asylum Policy in Europe" Conference in Berlin
DESCRIPTION:This event addressed the scope and the causes of the ongoing crisis in relation to Refugee\, Asylum and Migration policies in Europe. Furthermore\, it analysed the EU’s lack of political consensus and co-ordination in the process of decision-making and the impact of this situation on the ongoing crisis. \nThis conference included experts from Europe and the US\, as well as from the EU’s southern neighbour regions\, who discussed crucial issues of Europe’s asylum and migration policies. \nSome of the most important debates that this event aspired to contribute to are: \n\nWhat are our responsibilities as Europeans in face of the refugee crisis?\nHow do debates in Europe differ between countries? What are the reasons for these differences? And how much common ground will we be able to find?\nHow can we create a European refugee policy that enables us to act in solidarity\, while also respecting the Geneva Convention?\nIs it possible to establish a European minimum consensus that goes beyond repression and closing the borders? Or will we instead have to form changing and flexible alliances between member states to decide\, for example\, whether or not to receive refugees or how to cooperate with neighbouring countries that serve as a refuge for refugees and migrant workers?\nHow can we create a common EU border regime?\nHow can the EU improve co-operation with its neighbours\, in order to stabilise Europe’s external borders and improve the conditions for refugees in the initial receiving countries?\n\n  \nPROGRAMME: \nDAY 1: Thursday\, 26th of May (Open to public) \n15h00 Welcome and introduction by Ralf Fücks (President\, Heinrich Böll Foundation\, Berlin) \n15h15 Keynote debate: Europe’s Responsibility – Europe’s Future \nSpeakers: Sven Biscop (Professor and Director “Europe in the World”\, Egmont Royal Institute for International Relations\, Brussels)\, Rosa Balfour (Senior Fellow\, The German Marshall Fund of the United States\, Brussels) and Ralf Fücks (President\, Heinrich Böll Foundation\, Berlin) \n16h45 Panel: European Realities \nSpeakers: Pernilla Bäckman (Researcher\, Swedish Institute for European Policy Studies\, Stockholm)\,  Thanos Dokos (Director-General\, Hellenic Foundation for European & Foreign Policy\, Athens)\, Piotr Buras (Head of Warsaw Office\, European Council on Foreign Relations\, Warsaw)\, Steffen Angenendt (Head of Research Division\, German Institute for International and Security Affairs\, Berlin) \n18h45 Keynote and Panel: Cosmopolitanism\, International Law and National Interests \nSpeakers: Carol Batchelor\, Director of the Division of International Protection\, UNHCR\, Geneva)\, Kathleen Newland (Senior Fellow and Co-Founder of the Migration Policy Institute\, Washington D.C.)\, Aboubakr Jamai (Professor and Dean\, School of Business and International Relations\, IAU College\, Aix-en-Provence/Rabat)\, Rebecca Harms (MEP\, Chair\, The Greens/EFA\, Brussels) \nDAY 2: Friday\, 27th of May (Closed to public) \n10h00 Keynote 1: Europe’s Asylum Policy – A Vision Limited by Realities \nSpeakers: Lotte Leicht (Advocacy Director\, European Union\, Human Rights Watch\, Brussels) and Yves Pascouau (Director of Migration and Mobility Policies\, European Policy Centre\, Brussels) \n11h30 Debate 1: European Asylum Policy: Shared Responsibilities\, Shared Obligations  \nSpeakers: Matthieu Tardis (Research Fellow\, Centre for Migration and Citizenship\, IFRI\, Paris)\, Maciej Duszczyk (Professor and Head of Research Unit\, Centre of Migration Research\, Warsaw)\, Sara Prestianni (ARCI\, Roma) and Reinhard Bütikofer (MEP\, Chair\, The European Green Party\, Brussels) \n14h00 Keynote 2: Europe’s Border Protection – A Vision Limited by Realities \nGerald Knaus (Chairman\, European Stability Initiative\, Berlin/Istanbul) and Doris Peschke (General Secretary\, Churches’ Commission for Migrants in Europe\, Brussels) \n15h30 Debate 2: Repelling\, Sealing Off\, Relocating: Risks and Ramifications of Europe’s Border Protection \nSpeakers: Andreas Takis (Assistant Professor\, Aristotle University\, Thessaloniki)\, Metin Çorabatır (President\, Research Center on Asylum and Migration\, Ankara)\, Manuel Sarrazin (German MP\, Alliance 90/The Greens\, Berlin) and Emina Bužinkić (Activist\, Centre for Peace Studies\, Zagreb) \nLOCATION: Heinrich Böll Foundation\, Schumannstraße 8\, 10117 Berlin\, Germany \nLANGUAGES: The conference was translated simultaneously in German/English.

SUMMARY:"Commons and Resource Sharing" Workshop in Brussels
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is a part of the Reclaim the Commons project\, which in 2016 has a special focus on two themes – the relation between the commons and policy\, and the impact of commons as a governance model on the public services. In the scope of this transnational project\, the Green European Foundation and Etopia will implement three events in Belgium throughout this year\, with this workshop as the first. \nThemes of the Workshop: \nFrom economic platforms to waste and energy management cooperatives\, the question of communal structures is becoming more and more salient. Linked to the question of resource management\, these new structures offer a range of new and innovative opportunities and projects. Trust between partners\, savings made as well as original forms of co-management and coordination provide pathways to new alternatives. \nWhat are the means and frameworks to be put in place? Towards which objectives? And how does the sharing of communal resources represent an ecological and social alternative. These are some of the questions we tackled during this event with our speakers. \nSpeakers: \n\nThe Gérard Fourré and Marc Moura from the Comptoir des ressources créatives and Dynamo;\nBertrand Merckx from Ecores.\n\nTime and Location: \nDate TBC\, at the premises of Etopia in Brussels (Place des barricades\, 1 – 4th floor).

SUMMARY:Back to Borders? Panel Debate at the EGP Council in Utrecht
DESCRIPTION:What do borders mean in today’s Europe? Be it the harrowing images of refugees risking their lives to scale barbed wire fences\, or the policing of public spaces in the name of security measures\, these dividing lines have a very real impact on the lives of human beings. \nWhereas once walls and barriers appeared to be crumbling on the continent\, it seems today that the space around us is increasingly being carved up\, sometimes very starkly with the return of border controls\, other times almost imperceptibly with the creeping entrenchment of cleavages in identity. What does this trend tell us about the Europe we inhabit today? Are new battle lines being drawn? \nA panel debate in connection to the latest edition of the Green European Journal\, ‘Checkpoint Europe: The Return of Borders’ \nSpeakers: \n\nTineke Strik (Green Dutch MP\, Professor at Centre for Migration law of the Radboud University\, and Member of the Council of Europe)\nKrzysztof Czyzewski (writer\, philosopher and theatre director\, co-founder and president of the Borderland Foundation in Poland)\nFrançois Gemenne (political scientist\, specialised in migration and environmental affairs. He lectures on these issues in various universities\, including Sciences Po Paris and the University of Liège)\n\nModerator: Erica Meijers (Editor in chief the Dutch cultural and political magazine De Helling). \nDate: Saturday\, 21 May \nTime: 12:15- 13:45 \nVenue: \nCursus- en Vergadercentrum Domstad \nKoningsbergerstraat 9 \n3531 AJ Utrecht \nThe Netherlands

SUMMARY:Book Launch of "Green Values\, Religion and Secularism" in Utrecht
DESCRIPTION:This event featured a discussion on the subject of the book “Green Values\, Religion and Secularism”. \nEdited by Erica Meijers and Nuala Ahern\, the book reflects on the relationship between politics and religion\, both in their own lives and in society. The content of the book provides a space of reflexion for the Green politicians from different European contexts\, about the way their own religious or secular values influence their political attitude; the role of religion in the public forum; conflicts between fundamental rights\, such as the freedom of religion and the principle of sexual and gender equality; the role of Islam in Europe and the question whether religion is a source of inspiration or an obstacle for Green politics. \nThe publication’s aim is to stimulate a debate within the Greens about values\, religious or secular\, which is urgently needed within a Europe haunted by many different crises at the same time. Therefore\, this event is an invitation to work towards a more coherent debate within the Greens on the changing role of religion in society. \nThe speakers participating in the discussion were Philippe Lamberts (MEP)\, Ali Bas (Member of Nordrhein-Westfälischen Landtag)\, Meyrem Almaci (President of Groen) and Judith Sargentini (MEP). \nThe discussion during this event was moderated by Erica Meijers (Bureau de Helling).
