SUMMARY:Green Perspectives on European Peace and Security
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nAs part of this webinar\, we will analyse various Green perspectives on peace and security currently present at the European level. The webinar is mainly but not only based on a mapping of green policy stances that GEF and its partners are conducting with the support of the think tank GRIP. \nTogether with the panellists\, we will discuss different perspectives present at the regional level\, with a particular focus on prevailing views in Serbia\, Bosnia and Herzegovina\, and Croatia. We will consider how the history and experiences of this region should feed into any green conception of peace and security\, today and in the future. \n  \nProject background\nThis event is a part of Green European Foundation’s Green Visions on European Security project\, which aims to explore how the Greens could adopt the necessary tools to understand contemporary conflicts and develop mechanisms to anticipate\, avoid\, respond to\, and terminate them. By facilitating a frank discussion on key tension points and vacuums\, across historical\, geographical\, and national sensitivities\, and with political ecology values at its core\, GEF and its partners contribute to the green movement’s reflections and anchoring of an updated vision on security and defence.  \n  \nSpeakers\nSenada Šelo-Šabić – Institute for Development and International Relations\nBranka Vierda – Youth Initiative for Human Rights Croatia\nVelma Šarić – Post-Conflict Research Center\nMatija Šaljić – Green Youth of Serbia  \n  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: December 18 2023\, 5pm-6:30pm CET \nLocation: Zoom – the event will be streamed on Facebook and the recording will later be available on YouTube \nLanguage:  The main languages of the event will be Croatian\, Bosnian and Serbian \nRegistration: Please register in advance here \n   \n\nThis conference  is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of  Forum Green Window and the financial support of the European parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:The Challenges of Metropolitan Sustainable Mobility
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nSustainable mobility is a particular priority in metropolitan areas because of its impact on air quality\, on the daily lives of millions of people and economic actors\, and as an instrument of territorial cohesion. Public transport\, cycling and walking are at the heart of a model that guarantees the right to sustainable mobility. \nThe Barcelona metropolitan area\, with its population exceeding 3.5 million inhabitants\, is a paradigmatic case in this debate\, as it is an area that risks being sanctioned by the EU due to its poor air quality. \nWithin this context\, what are the examples of good and bad practices of mobility? What are the challenges that lie ahead? Can we find successful sustainable urban mobility practices in other European cities? \nThese questions and possible answers will be the subject of this dynamic debate\, bringing together diverse experts\, academics\, and local government actors. \n  \nProject background\nThis event is part of a series of debates entitled “Europe on the Move: Shaping the Future of Sustainable Mobility in the Iberian Peninsula” organised by the Green European Foundation and Heinrich Böll Stiftung EU with the support of Transición Verde\, Instituto José Tengarrinha\, Fundació Nous Horitzons\, EcoPolítica and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. \nThis series of debates aims to foster debate in Portugal and Spain around the future of mobility\, bringing together relevant stakeholders from civil society\, academia and politics to analyse and explore challenges and opportunities for the future of mobility and the Green Deal in Europe. \n  \nSpeakers\n\nGuille Lopez\, Barcelona City Councillor and Promoter of the Eixample Breathe platform\nCarme Miralles\, Professor of Urban Geography at the UAB\nLaura Campos\, Montcada I Reixac City Councillor\nZeeger Ernsting\, Amsterdam City Councillor\n\n  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 14th December\, 6:30pm CET \nLocation: Ateneu Barcelones\, Carrer Canuda\, 6 \nRegistration: Prior registration is required – please register here. \nLanguage:  Catalan with English simultaneous translation \nRecommended reading: European Mobility Atlas \n  \n\nThis event is organized by the Green European Foundation and Heinrich Böll Stiftung EU with the support of Fundació Nous Horitzons and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Moving to the Future: Reimagining Urban Mobility (Lisbon)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThe present ecological crisis impels us to seek a change in the way we move\, leading to increased efforts towards the decarbonisation of mobility. A mix of new and old solutions are key to change the urban mobility panorama\, namely the electrification and the expansion of public transportation networks\, and the creation of walking or cycling infrastructure to make active mobility attractive and pleasant. This change can also be seen as an opportunity to improve people’s lives by decreasing commuting time\, improving the air quality\, reducing noise\, and promoting an active lifestyle.  \nIn a simple sentence\, there is a need to shift the cities’ focus from cars to people. To achieve this\, a new mindset that prioritises public transportation is needed\, or “the social ideology of the motorcar”\, as the philosopher André Gorz named it back in 1973.  \nSustainable mobility must not only encompass ecological considerations\, but also needs to include an intersectional approach which takes gender and accessibility dimensions into account. As such\, we will also speak about gender and accessibility\, and dive into how to make daily commuting in metropolitan areas more sustainable\, accessible\, and inclusive.  \nProject background\nThis event is part of “Europe on the Move: Shaping the Future of Sustainable Mobility in the Iberian Peninsula” event series\, which aims to nurture the debate in Portugal and Spain around the future of mobility and the Green Deal\, with a particular eye for the challenges and opportunities for sustainable mobility and how they relate to Iberian realities.   \nSpeakers\n\nManuel Banza\, EMEL \nCarla Castelo\, Local Councillor at Oeiras \nRosa Félix\, Instituto Superior Técnico \nPhilipp Cerny\, Chief Executive Editor of the European Mobility Atlas \nMore to be announced \n\nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 12th December\, 6:30pm-8:30pm GMT  \nLocation: Sala do Conselho\, UACS\, Rua Castilho 14\, Lisboa  \nLanguage: The main languages of the event will be Portuguese and English\, with simultaneous interpretation provided EN<>PT.    \nRegistration: N/A  \nOther useful info: A recording will be uploaded to the GEF Youtube channel following the event.  \nRecommended reading: \n\nEuropean Mobility Atlas \nMetals for a Green and Digital Europe – An Agenda for Action \n\n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation and Heinrich Böll Stiftung EU with the support of Instituto José Tengarrinha and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Geopolitics of Degrowth in a Conflicted Europe - Global South’s Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nGreen policies that respect planetary boundaries and allow the Global South to develop seem incompatible with unlimited economic growth within the EU. We need a realistic scenario for a future in which we consume more sparingly but live better together.  \nCould a post-growth EU that considerably reduces its ecological footprint with the purpose of freeing up natural resources find partners in the Global South? What should these partnerships entail? \nTo tackle this issue\, the Green European Foundation with the support of BlueLink is organising a webinar focusing on the Global South. Participants will have the opportunity to review and reflect upon the outcomes from expert meetings\, research and interviews\, held across Europe during 2023.  \nWe invite researchers\, activists and policy makers – particularly from the Global South  – with an interest in green policies and geopolitics to present perspectives\, experiences\, analytical or activity reports and to engage in a discussion around the following questions: \n\nHow would it be possible to optimize the possibilities that degrowth offers\, including for democratic flourishing and a safer Europe and world?\nCould a post-growth EU considerably reduce its environmental footprint with the express purpose of freeing up natural resources for the Global South?\nCan the EU hope for strategic partnerships with (democratic) Global South countries\, which are vital for greater security and legitimacy?\nCould a post-growth EU still make a larger contribution to poverty reduction\, global public goods\, tax justice\, legal migration routes\, international climate finance\, and compensation for climate loss and damage?\nCould the older EU members come to terms with their colonial pasts\, and on what conditions? How important is this for the Global South?\nWill exports from Global South suffer if a post-growth EU  reduces its overconsumption of global resources?\nHow much EU’s partnership with the Global South depend on technology transfer?\nWhat role of technology beyond trade\, development\, and climate: is it intertwined with geopolitics?\n\nNot every question has a definitive answer and we promote creativity\, analytical thinking\, and a fresh approaches to the challenge. \n  \nProject Background\nThis event is part of GEF’s project Geopolitics of a Post-Growth Europe\, which explores the tensions between degrowth/post-growth and geopolitics. The project aims to ignite a conversation between critics of economic growth and progressive thinkers on foreign and security policy\, who now often operate in separate circuits. It aims to find solutions beyond naïve anti-militarism and convenient belief in green growth. Find out more about the project and its findings at geopoliticspostgrowth.eu. \n  \nPracticalities\nThis GEF e-workshop will be held in Zoom by BlueLInk..  \nDate and time: December 11\, 2023 (14:00 UCT / 15:00 CET / 16:00 EET)  \nLanguage: English  \nRegistration: Open to all interested participants\, but please register in advance via this link. Please use the ‘Questions and Comments’ field to specify your scope of interest or proposed intervention. You will receive a confirmation email after registration.  \n  \n\nThis event is organized by the Green European Foundation with the support of BlueLink. It will take place online\, in partnership with the Association for Progressive Commnunications and its members.

SUMMARY:The metallic core of the energy transition (Porto)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThe ecological crisis needs urgent action which brings along its own challenges. One of these challenges is the increasing use of certain materials within the context of the energy transition\, resulting from the need to substitute old technologies with new ones. The shift to such materials increases the demand for metals which are particularly necessary for electricity storage and conductivity.  \nHowever\, mining activities have serious impacts on the environment and local populations. Therefore\, there is a tension that arises between the energy transition and the increasing demand for metals. How can we minimize the demand for metals? How should mining activities be regulated and where should they occur? How can the energy transition be fair?  \nIn this debate we will address these questions and look for possible solutions to make the energy transition fair. Join us!   \nProject background\nThis event is part of “Europe on the Move: Shaping the Future of Sustainable Mobility in the Iberian Peninsula” event series\, which aim to nurture the debate in Portugal and Spain around the future of mobility and the Green Deal\, with a particular eye for the challenges and opportunities for sustainable mobility and how they relate to Iberian realities.  \nSpeakers:\n\nAna Rita Antunes\, Coopérnico \nArtur Patuleia\, E3G \nDiego Marín\, European Environmental Bureau  \n\nPracticalities \nDate and Time: 4th December\, 6:30pm-7:45pm GMT  \nLocation: Avenida Fernão de Magalhães 1147\, Porto   \nLanguage:  The main language of the event will be English.    \nOther useful info: In-person event with further publication of the recording online.  \nRecommended readings\nMetals for a Green and Digital Europe- An Agenda for Action (available in multiple languages\, namely Portuguese)  \nEuropean Mobility Atlas   \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation and Heinrich Böll Stiftung EU with the support of Instituto José Tengarrinha and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Green deal and Beyond II (Skopje)
DESCRIPTION:About the event:\nIn the face of multiple crises – geopolitical\, climate and energy\, but also the very erosion of Europe’s social fabric by its outdated economic model – what should the Greens bring to the table to ensure that the European Green Deal (EGD) switches to the next gear into a social EGD or EGD 2.0? This session will bring together voices and expertise from politics and civil society to lay bare the flaws and limitations of the current Green Deal and propose the pathways we need to explore to make a Green Deal worthy of its name. \nThe Green Deal is a comprehensive progressive plan to combat the climate disaster while eliminating socio-economic inequalities in the country. The plan is a strategic framework for collective action towards transforming the functioning of the economic and energy system by creating thousands of low-carbon jobs for a better life for all living beings in harmony with nature. The same principles that will apply to EU member states by European Green Deal are mirrored in the region by the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans. \nIn the Green Agenda document regarding the circular economy\, the countries of the Western Balkans will strive to contribute to the protection of the environment and the minimization of the amount of waste generated in the region\, while with a large set of activities to be committed to the depollution of the air\, water and soil. \nIn proposing this project as a transnational project\, we see a huge importance not only in empowering citizens to engage with topics of our interest (climate\, energy\, water\, biodiversity\, health)\, but also in strengthening linkages between the Greens across Europe and engaged citizens\, with the purpose of making them more relevant\, inclusive and connected with social groups and movements. \nGuests and experts from academic and practical backgrounds will share their expertise with the participants and enable an exchange of ideas and concepts. \nOn this event we will discuss with experts\, institutions\, NGOs and activists on the perspectives of the Green Agenda for the WB. \n  \nProject background\nThis event is part of the Green European Foundation’s project Green deal and Beyond. The first focus of this project is based on proposals of the green family to integrate ambitiously the social dimension\, so to work on a ‘Just Green Deal’. The second level will ‘Go Beyond’ the Green Deal and mobilize future-oriented concepts such as Sustainable Welfare\, related to an Ecological Welfare State and the operational concept of Universal Public Services. \n  \nSpeakers\n\nEwa Sufin Jaquemart\, Strefa Zieleni\, Poland and Board member of GEF\nVanja Djinlev\, Scientific assistant and researcher\, Transdisciplinary Lab (TdLab)\, ETH Zurich\, Switzerland\nZekija Memedova Hristova – speaker and researcher – Association SUNRISE\n\n  \nProgramme \n10:00-12:00 Introduction to GEF projects and research – Ewa Sufin Jaquemart\, Strefa Zieleni\, Poland and Board member of GEF \n10:00-12:00 Green European Deal and Transition of the Energy Sector – Vanja Djinlev\, Scientific assistant and researcher\, Transdisciplinary Lab (TdLab)\, ETH Zurich\, Switzerland \n12:00-12:30 Coffee Break \n12:30-13:30 European Green Deal and Energy Democracy – Zekija Memedova Hristova \n13:30-14:00 Summarizing and conclusions \n14:00-15:00 Lunch and departure \nWorking language: Macedonian\, English \n  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 3rd December\, 10am-15:00pm CET \nLocation: Skopje \nLanguage:  The main language of the event will be Macedonian \nPlease note this is a closed-doors event. \n  \n\nThis event is organized by the Green European Foundation with the support of Sunrise and with the financial support of the European parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Citizens Assemblies in Action (Skopje)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nBoth the climate and energy crises are at their peak across Europe and very often policymakers are required to make quick and short-notice decisions based on the executive power they gained through elections. In many cases the voices and needs of citizens are not properly represented and recognized as it appears that crisis mode does not allow sufficient time nor resources to allow a deeper democratic process. \nCitizen’s assemblies have the potential to empower citizens to engage in a diverse of topics (climate\, energy\, water\, biodiversity\, health)\, but also to strengthening linkages between the Greens across Europe and engaged citizens\, with the purpose of making them more relevant\, inclusive and connected with social groups and movements. \nGuests and experts from academic and practical backgrounds will share their expertise with the participants and enable an exchange of ideas and concepts. \n  \nProject background\nThis event is part of the Green European Foundation’s project Green deal for All – Citizens Assemblies in Action. The emergence of assemblies across Europe is a symptom which shows that citizens don’t feel sufficiently involved in policy making or decision-making processes that relate to the green transition. Citizen assemblies emerge as a form of civic deliberation to underline the societal dimension of the green transition policies present in the European Green Deal\, to reflect the full spectrum of society and very often to boost local or national decision makers who often don’t have sufficient legitimacy to take more ambitious\, bolder actions. \nThis project aims to increase the knowledge on the work of citizen assemblies\, their methodologies\, successes and failures\, but also to work proactively with them or create the supportive conditions for the emergence of new ones. Not only with the purpose of building public ownership over tough choices to be taken\, but also to democratize climate action across Europe. \n  \nSpeakers\nEwa Sufin Jaquemart\, Strefa Zieleni\, Poland and Board member of GEF \nHristijan Stanoevikj – SUNRISE Association \nVedran Horvat – IPE Croatia – Board member of GEF and Leading partner of GEF project “Citizen’s Assemblies in Action” \nModerator Nevena Georgievska\, O2 Initiative and Independents for Karposh \nProgramme\n13:00-14:00 Registrations and welcome coffee \n14:00-14:20 Introduction of participants \n14:20-14:40 Introduction of Green European Foundation – Ewa Sufin Jaquemart\, Strefa Zieleni\, Poland and Board member of GEF \n14:40-15:10 Introduction to Citizens assemblies – Regional and European experiences\, Hristijan Stanoevikj – SUNRISE Association \n15:10-15:45 Vedran Horvat – IPE Croatia – Board member of GEF and Leading partner of GEF project “Citizen’s Assemblies in Action” \n15:45-16:00 Coffee Break \n16:00-18:00 Networking opportunities in green activism (Informal round table) – Moderator Nevena Georgievska Grad. SUMMARY:Beyond Electrification: Social and Geopolitical Costs of Lithium
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThe growing demand for electrification does not come without its own costs. Environmental\, social and ethical considerations arise when taking into account the impact on local communities. To obtain the necessary resources\, huge extractivist industries threaten to devastate entire regions. How can we resist them? Furthermore\, electrification also poses some serious global issues. Can we move beyond our outdated electricity and mobility model without compromising social justice and the exploitation of the Global South? \nThis session will bring together voices and expertise from politics and civil society to expose the flaws and limitations of the current model of electrification at local\, national and European levels. The aim of the event is to create a dynamic space for debate where we can explore ways to ensure a more sustainable and socially just electrified future. \n  \nSpeakers\n\nCatalina Abell (moderator)\, EcoPolitica\, expert in political communication and political processes.\nFlorent Marcellesi\, former-MEP. SUMMARY:Far from the Center: Mobility in the Ultra-Periphery (Ponta Delgada)
DESCRIPTION:About\nMobility plays a crucial role in shaping the quality of people’s lives by influencing multiple aspects. To name a few examples\, it determines which jobs people can apply to\, how often they can see relatives and friends\, and the amount of free time they have. It can also amplify prejudice and inequality\, namely those regarding gender\, race and others. The way people move has a huge impact on the environment that should always be taken into consideration. \nWith both wonderful but challenging geography\, the Azores is a good place to discuss these problems as there is much work to be done towards sustainable mobility that works for all. Far from mainland Portugal\, travelling to or from Azores is not affordable to everyone’s pockets; there are inequalities between the islands in the archipelago\, with some having much better connections than others. In this debate\, we seek to address the pressing issues connected to mobility in the ultra-periphery with multiple analytical and geographical lenses. We will bring together diverse perspectives to analyse the challenges and opportunities for mobility on island and in ultra-peripheral contexts\, the impacts of tourism on mobility and how mobility is also a gender issue. Besides the Azorean perspective\, we welcome an international panel with insights from Greece\, Croatia and Spain. \n  \nProject background\nThis event is part of “Europe On the Move: Shaping the Future of Sustainable Mobility in the Iberian Peninsula”\, which aims to nurture the debate in Portugal and Spain around the future of mobility and the Green Deal\, with a particular eye for the challenges and opportunities for sustainable mobility and how they relate to Iberian realities. \n  \nSpeakers\no            Filipe Roque (moderator) – Councillor of Ponta Delgada\, Portugal \no            Henar Martín – Consultant of Sustainable Mobility in Canarias\, Spain \no            Nikolina Rajkovic – Institute for Political Ecology\, Croatia \no            Rosa Simas – Universidade dos Açores e Universidade Nova de Lisboa\, Portugal \no            Theocharis Tsoutsos – Technical University of Crete\, Greece \n  \nProgramme\n\nIntroduction and presentation of the speakers\n\nFilipe Roque (moderator) – Councillor of Ponta Delgada\, Portugal \n\nMobility on the island: the Azorean case\n\nNikolina Rajkovic – Institute for Political Ecology\, Croatia \n\nThe impact of tourism on mobility\n\nTheocharis Tsoutsos – Technical University of Crete\, Greece \n\nSustainable mobility in and between islands\n\nRosa Simas – Universidade dos Açores e Universidade Nova de Lisboa\, Portugal \n\nA gender perspective on mobility in Azores and its links with sustainability\n\nHenar Martín – Consultant of Sustainable Mobility in Canarias\, Spain \n\nMobility in the ultra-periphery\, the example of Canarias and connection with sustainable mobility\nModerated discussion followed by Q&A\n\n  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 25th November\, 15:30pm-17:30pm GMT-1 \nLocation: Anfiteatro VIII\, Universidade dos Açores and Online (streamed on GEF Youtube). \nLanguage:  The main languages of the event will be Portuguese and English\, with simultaneous interpretation provided EN<>PT. \nRegistration: This is public event; no prior registration is required. \nSocial media event page: Longe do Centro: Mobilidade na Ultraperiferia | Facebook \nRecommended reading: European Mobility Atlas \n  \n  \n  \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation and Heinrich Böll Stiftung EU with the support of Instituto José Tengarrinha and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation

SUMMARY:How Can Greens and Progressives Influence NATO? (Örebro)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nGreen and progressive parties across Europe have historically held a sceptical view towards NATO\, with many deeming such a military alliance incompatible with disarmament and a shift towards non-military solutions to international conflicts.   \nYet with Sweden next in line to join NATO\, there is a need to reckon with and respond to the current political reality\, without losing track of the underlying values that guide our peace and security stances.  \nTo contribute to this crucial European debate\, GEF commissioned a report\, with the support of Cogito\, that maps out stances towards NATO across Europe\, but more importantly explores how greens and progressives can influence NATO in line with their own visions and priorities.    \nParticipants at this seminar will receive copies of the working paper and discuss its findings\, guided by insights and reactions from our expert panel.  \n\nProject background\nWith a focus on the Eastern flank of Europe\, the 2022-2023 debates series seeks to enrich green and political ecology discourse. The series aim to provide spaces to hear the voices of green actors\, peace and security experts\, as well as partners from different regions. With the support of Cogito\, GEF is delving specifically into the question of NATO and anchoring the green movement’s debates on this topic within its many historical and geographical dimensions.  \n\nSpeakers\n\nBodil Valero – former Green MEP\, G100 Global Chair on Security and Defence  \nHenrik Jalalian – Director of Swedish green think tank Cogito \nJacob Risberg – Green MP and international spokesperson \nSien Hasker – Programme Manager at the Green European Foundation \n\n\nPracticalities\nDate and Time: November 18th (20:30 – 21:15 CET)  \nLocation: Olof Palmes Torg 1\, 702 22 Örebro. Room: Mältaren  \nLanguage: Swedish (with brief introductory remarks in English)    \n\nThis seminar is organised by the Green European Foundation\, with the support of Cogito and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Ecopolis: Fair(er) Futures Festival (Brussels)
DESCRIPTION:Context:\nHope is something you need to deserve\,” writes Greta Thunberg in The Climate Book. That’s why ECOPOLIS 2023 takes on the challenge of igniting hopeful activism. How do you turn concern or anxiety about the climate crisis into commitment? How to find a middle ground between naiveté and defeatism? \n\nAbout the event:\n\n\nEcopolis is the day to meet people who care about a sustainable future. Because ecological challenges know no national or linguistic borders\, Ecopolis is diverse\, international and interactive. Ecopolis invites Belgian and international authors to debate the transition towards a socio-ecological society. Inspiring books\, documentaries and debates between writers\, academics and civil society thinkers about ecology\, economy and society are at the heart of Ecopolis \n\n\nThis year the festival brings together different actors from the political\, cultural and social environment to discuss this years focus topic\, cooperation for a fair – fairer future as core value. This means tackling the conflicts rooted by competition as basic organisational principle on the individual and economic level. Cooperation is understood as cooperation between movements and allyships\, the cooperation between countries and the Global South and Global North\, as well as the development of commons\, such as housing and energy cooperatives. \nSpeakers\n\nKim Stanley Robinson\, novelist\nStephanie Collingwoode Williams\, activist in climate justice and anti-racist movements\nGeert Buelens\, poet\nJessica den Outer\, author and activists for the Rights of Nature\nPeter Bosmans\n\n\nProgramme:\nThe festival runs from 10:30 to 21:00\, offering different parallel activities\, such as panel discussions\, workshops or thematic walks around the city. This years programme highlights three different themes\, each shedding light on the ecological crisis in a different way. \nThe first one is Facts and/or fiction. Does knowing more about climate help us make the right decisions? Where can we gain this knowledge from? Can politics and our personal lives also play a role?  How can fiction help bring about our hope and a sense of responsibility? Are these questions on your mind too? In this programme item\, you will take part in conversations\, a walk and performances with a host of scientists and readers (you\, for instance) and share inspiration. \nIn the series of activities under the umbrella of How to\, you will get your hands dirty: come screen printing\, pimp your clothes and cycle around in the city visiting places full of hope. Engage with real doers on energy sharing\, fair fashion and housing cooperatives. Discover how to transform your own commitment into collective action in your daily life. The debate is open! \nIn the third theme named The Power of Change you will learn how history shows that a better society does not happen by itself and learn in different workshops wat are the deep conflicts and challenges we are facing today.  It comes from sustained action by committed people. It took decades of social struggles to bring about the welfare state. Today\, many are pushing for a quality society for all. \nLearn more about the schedule of the programme and speakers. \n\nPracticalities:\nDate and Time: 18 November\, 10:30 – 21:00 \nLocation: Muntpunt\, Pl. de la Monnaie 6\, 1000 Bruxelles (some events\, such as walks\, happen at different locations\, you can find them indicated in the programm) \nLanguage:  The main languages of the event will be Dutch\, English and French\, with simultaneous interpretation provided EN<>NL<>FR for some sessions \nGet your tickets here!  \n  \n  \n\n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Oikos and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. \n\n

SUMMARY:GEF at the European Forum (Madrid)
DESCRIPTION:  \nAbout the event\nThe European Forum is a unique space for the left\, greens and progressives to come together. This event allows like-minded political foundations to organise debates and discussions on key social and green topics. Within this context and in collaboration with Transform! Europe and FEPS\, GEF is organising two workshops on 11 November. \nGEF’s role in the European Forum will draw from our Knowledge Community: the Future of the EU’s Energy Project and our work on Post- and Degrowth. \n  \nProgramme\n9:30-11:30 The Role of the State   \nForging a socio-ecological welfare state defined by wellbeing within planetary boundaries could be the chance to face the polycrisis. Indeed\, our welfare states should ensure universal access to high-quality essential services such as clean\, affordable and energy-efficient housing and mobility\, as well as strengthened social protection systems that mitigate the devastating consequences of climate change and environmental degradation. A new socio-ecological state would have a responsibility in enabling policy frameworks so citizens everywhere can take into their stride the new challenges brought about by digital breakthroughs and the climate crisis. By implementing social policies that tackle socio-economic inequalities\, reduce our carbon emissions and limit our environmental impact\, socio-ecological welfare states stand the chance to improve people’s quality of life and strengthen their resilience to shocks.  \n  \n12:00-14:00 The Climate Dimension of the Future of the EU’s Energy Project \nThe current EU energy framework showed its weaknesses over the past couple of years – amidst crises. These uncovered problems with fossil fuel resource dependency\, as well as with dependences on single countries as such. They showed the missing links between EU energy policy and security/geopolitics. The polycrisis also showed the lack of social safeguards and consideration in the EU and MS energy policy\, it showed that the democracy dimension has been too much underlit\, and above all – it clearly showed that\, if the EU had doubled down on its clean energy transition a decade earlier\, it would have been much more resilient to what it is experiencing today.  Mitigating and adapting to climate change is in other words not solely extremely important in terms of avoiding climate damage and emergency\, but also has positive spillover effects on energy security\, and if done rightly on the social and democratic dimension of energy. So why isn’t it going faster? Panelists will be asked how to speed up the EU’s clean transition\, zooming in as well on the existing stumbling blocks and cross-cutting policy areas.  \n  \nSpeakers\nThe Role of the State   \n\n (Moderated by Kevin Le Merle\, FEPS) \nDiego Lopez Garrido\, Former Secretary of State for the European Union in the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation \nCornelia Hildebrandt\, co-president Transform ! SUMMARY:How Can Greens and Progressives Influence NATO?
DESCRIPTION:About the event: \nGreen and progressive parties across Europe have historically held a sceptical view towards NATO\, with many deeming such a military alliance incompatible with disarmament and a shift towards non-military solutions to international conflicts.   \nThe Russian war of aggression against Ukraine shifted some of these stances\, prompting extensive internal and external debates within the green movement\, particularly in Western and Northern Europe. These debates have cast a light on the desperate need for a green and progressive policy path within security and defence issues\, and revealed gaps that exist within green and progressive parties’ positions on military defence.   \nTo contribute to this crucial European debate\, GEF commissioned a report with the support of Cogito that maps out stances towards NATO across Europe\, explores how Greens and progressives can influence NATO\, and asks specific questions around topics like nuclear disarmament or focusing on European defence cooperation instead.   \nThis webinar will present some key findings of the working paper\, and discuss these questions further with a panel of interviewees.    \nProject background: \nWith a focus on the Eastern flank of Europe\, the 2022-2023 debates series seeks to enrich green and political ecology discourse. The series aim to provide spaces to hear the voices of green actors\, peace and security experts\, as well as partners from different regions. With the support of Cogito\, GEF is delving specifically into the question of NATO and anchoring the green movement’s debates on this topic within its many historical and geographical dimensions.  \nSpeakers:\n\nJacob Risberg\, Miljöpartiet de gröna \nAtte Harjanne\, Vihreät  \nMerle Spellerberg\, Bündnis 90/Die Grünen \nAndrés Ingi\, Píratar \nModerated by Sarah Bitamazire (report author) \n\nPracticalities: \nDate and Time: November 8th (20:30 – 22:00 CET)  \nLanguage: English    \nRegistration: This is an online event\, please register in advance via this link.  \n\nThis webinar is organised by the Green European Foundation\, with the support of Cogito and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Green Perspectives on European Security
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nDespite the ideals and the efforts of several generations to stop wars\, the reality is that armed conflicts are still ravaging societies worldwide. Besides the most brutal war affecting the youth in Europe\, the Russian invasion of Ukraine\, armed conflicts continue to rise in South Caucasus\, Turkey\, and the Balkans. While the Green movement is rooted in non-violence and pacifism\, it’s also vaguely defined and understood within and outside the Green movement. These principles are also easier to defend in peaceful times. However\, these conflicts and the aspects of life (such as energy\, infrastructure\, food\, housing) once again remind us that we need to have a better definition of non-violence\, pacifism\, peace\, security\, and stability. During this Study Session\, the green youth of Europe will consider these issues and discuss them with the experts directly working on and around the impacts of these conflicts on energy security\, digital security\, propaganda\, media\, freedom of speech\, and civil society activities. \n  \nProject background\nThis event is a part of Green European Foundation’s Green Visions on European Security project\, which aims to explore how the Greens could adopt the necessary tools to understand contemporary conflicts and develop mechanisms to anticipate\, respond\, and terminate them. By facilitating a frank discussion on key tension points and vacuums\, across historical\, geographical\, and national sensitivities\, and with political ecology values at its core\, GEF and its partners contribute to the green movement’s reflections and anchoring of an updated vision on security and defence. \n  \nProgramme and Speakers:\n10:00 – 11:30      Session on Energy Security \n\nOlena Rutkovska – project manager for Ukrainian NGO Khmelnitsky Energy Cluster\nMorgan Henley – EU heating sector decarbonisation campaigner at Bankwatch\n\n12:00 – 13:30     Session on Democracy & Civil Society in Ensuring Security \n\nBalin Mikola – research fellow at the Democracy Institute of Central European University\n\n15:00 – 16:30    Workshop on Media Security & Propaganda \n\nIryna Zemlyana – media expert at the Institute for Mass Information\n\n17:00 – 18:30    Session on Digital Security \n\nAnastasiya Zhyrmont – campaigner for Eastern Europe and Central Asia at Access Now\n\n20:30 – 22:00  Forum on Sharing Experiences \n  \nPracticalities:\nDate and Time: 27th October (10:00-22:00) \nLocation: European Youth Center Budapest \nLanguage:  The main language of the event will be English. \nRegistration: Registration is now closed\, but links will be provided for the streams of some sessions. \n\n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation\, with the support of Cooperation and Development Network Eastern Europe\, as well as the Federation of Young European Greens and the European Youth Centre Budapest. SUMMARY:Anticipating the Climate Collapse (Barcelona)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThe future we predicted is unfolding before us. Devastating climate changes have resulted from pushing the planet to unprecedented limits. We must continue to fight to reverse the effects we have\, unfortunately\, already provoked. But in the meantime\, we are living with climate changes that are here to stay. What can we do about it? How can we fight increasingly hot summers in our cities? How can we ensure the protection of the natural environment\, so that deforestation and mistreatment do not continue? How can we live comfortably without damaging natural and energy resources? What can we do to ensure that our children live in a less polluted environment? How can we help young people who suffer from climate anxiety? SUMMARY:Green Political Activist Training - Sustainable Energy Politics (Budapest)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThis event is divided into different sections. The first part of the workshop will cover the basics of EU energy policy and climate policy nexus.  It will also look at Hungary’s energy policy objectives\, compliance with EU targets\, and current investments\, with a particular focus on the construction of Paks2. \nThe part\, will look at current energy policy developments. What determines the price of energy commodities\, what can be expected in the near future\, how will the war in Ukraine and inflation affect energy conditions? \nFor the third part\,  we will analyse the EU’s renewable energy targets and the current developments in Hungary: solar and wind energy\, the potential of geothermal energy. The speaker in this section will analyse the chances of a green transition at EU and national level. We will continue familiarising ourselves with the role of statistics in the field of energy politics\, and then we will turn to the following topics: \n\nEU Clean Energy Package (CEP)\nThe possibilities of the Hungarian CEP implementation\nThe solidarity economy paradigm and the possibilities of creating energy communities\nThe development of energy community financing\nCooperative principles.\n\nThe event will close with an analysis on the potential of energy efficiency. \n  \nProject background\nThis event is part of the Green European Foundation’s Green Political Activist Training Project. We put together a series of learning activities aiming to help participants to understand the concepts of political ecology and apply them to both local and European-level politics. We will examine various policies and policy proposals ranging from local politics to the European Green Deal. Our goal is to prepare participants for both assessing and advocating policies in line with progressive green values. We’ll also provide young green activists with them tools and knowledge\, as well as an opportunity to network\, get in contact with political actors and experts on multiple levels and come together as a political community. SUMMARY:Geopolitics of Degrowth in a Conflicted Europe (Leipzig)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nGreen policies that respect planetary boundaries and allow the Global South to develop seem incompatible with unlimited economic growth in the EU. We need a realistic scenario for a future in which we consume more sparingly but live better together. A scenario that could be possible within a degrowth context. \nThe war in Ukraine completely changed the geopolitical landscape. Today\, the idea of ending GDP growth in the EU encounters new and important impediments\, with power and wealth being measured in military capacity. Can a degrowth Europe build strength and resilience in this context? \nTo tackle this issue\, the Green European Foundation with the support of BlueLink is organising a workshop in Leipzig\, as part of a series of expert meetings across Europe. The outcomes from these meetings and further research and interviews will feed into a final publication to be launched in the autumn of 2023. \nWe invite researchers\, activists and policy makers – particularly from Central and Eastern Europe and Ukraine – with an interest in green policies and geopolitics to present perspectives\, experiences\, analytical or activity reports and to engage in a discussion around the following questions: \n\nHow does degrowth within the EU affect the EU’s ability to achieve geopolitical objectives like providing security\, and what are the resulting tensions and synergies?\nCan such tensions be mitigated? If so\, how?\nHow would it be possible to optimize the possibilities that degrowth offers\, including for democratic flourishing and a safer Europe and world?\n\nNot every question has a definitive answer and we promote creativity\, analytical thinking\, and a fresh approaches to the challenge. \nProject Background\nThis event is part of GEF’s project Geopolitics of a Post-Growth Europe\, which explores the tensions between degrowth/post-growth and geopolitics. \nPracticalities\nThis GEF workshop will take place as part of the International Roundtable 2023 held by the Peaceful Revolution Foundation in Leipzig. You can find out more information about this conference here.  \nDate and time: October 11th\, 2023 (14:30 CET)  \nLocation: Leipzig\, Germany and online (hybrid event)  \nLanguage: English  \nRegistration: Open to all interested participants\, but please register in advance via this link. Please use the ‘Questions and Comments’ field to specify your scope of interest or proposed intervention. You will receive a confirmation email after registration.  \nIn case you want to attend the workshop in person in Leipzig\, please also email office@bluelink.net by Friday\, October 6th.   \n  \n\nThis event is organized by the Green European Foundation with the support of BlueLink. It will take place as part of the Revolutionale International Round Table 2023 held in Leipzig by the Peaceful Revolution Foundation.   \n

SUMMARY:GEF at the Budapest Forum
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThe Budapest forum is an annual event organised by the Municipality of Budapest\, Political Capital\, and CEU Democracy Institute to push forward the ‘Building [of] Sustainable Democracies’. You can find more information on the programme and speakers here. \nThe European Energy Governance is a critical component for building and sustaining democratic systems in the EU. The way we envisage our energy systems impacts the very fabric of our societies and\, therefore\, our common future as Europeans. The war of aggression in Ukraine and the numerous turbulences in the global economic and geopolitical landscape have stressed more than ever the consequences the European energy policy implementation. The wide-ranging impacts extend beyond energy procurement and security\, encompassing democracy\, environmental sustainability\, and social justice. \nThe current EU energy framework showed its weaknesses over the past couple of years amidst the polycrisis. These uncovered issues\, ranging from fossil fuel resource dependency to dependences on single countries. It thereby showed the missing links between EU energy policy and security. The polycrisis also showed the lack of social safeguards and consideration in the EU and energy policy. It showed that the democracy dimension has been severely neglected. And above all\, it showed that if the EU had doubled down on its clean energy transition at least a decade earlier\, it would have been much more resilient than it is today. \nGEF will tackle the future of the EU’s energy project as part of the Budapest Forum with a panel entitled Tomorrow’s Europe – replacing energy at the centre of the European political and democratic project\, building on GEF’s Knowledge Community: the Future of the EU’s Energy Project. \n  \nSpeakers\n\nJesse Scott- Research Fellow at the German Institute for Economic Research.\nStéphane Bourgeois-Leader of Collaborative Low Energy Vision for the European Region and European Relations and Policy Manager at NégaWatt Association.\nRosa Martínez Rodríguez-  Board member of the Green European Journal\, member of the political ecology think tank Ecopolítica\, and Former Green member of the Spanish Parliament.\nEero Yrjö-Koskinen-\, executive Director of the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP).\nBenjamin Denis- Senior Policy advisor and Head of industrial policy coordination at industriAll Europe.\n\nModerated by Taube Van Melkebeke- Policy Mnaager (Green European Foundation) \n  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 11th – 12th October \nLocation: online and CEU\, Nador 15\, Budapest \nLanguage:  The main languages of the event will be English. \nRegistration: Please find the link to online and on site registration here You can read the full programme here. \n  \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of City of Budapest\, Political Capital Institute\, CEU Democracy Institute and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.
