SUMMARY:Evaluating the Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change in Western Greece ( Patras)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThis seminar will mobilise the local society and the Regional Authorities\, and inform rural and civil associations\, regional representatives\, students\, municipalities and policy makers to discuss the existing Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change in Western Greece. SUMMARY:Ecofeminism for All: A Queer Perspective (online)
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nFor the past two years\, the Green European Foundation and its partners across Europe have been exploring the concept of ecofeminism in all its facets\, especially the lessons it holds for the multiple crises of care that our continent faces. DESCRIPTION:About the event\nPost-growth is about much more than just greening economies. It is a new way of understanding society\, also understood as an ambitious\, science-based\, values-driven\, social and realistic way of thinking. Post-growth is about shifting the focus from quantitative growth (consumption and GDP growth) to qualitative growth (quality of life growth). \nIn his book\, Paul Schenderling highlights the importance of cooperatives in the transition to post-growth and he describes what is possible at the local level. After a short lecture by Schenderling\, we will further explore the link between de-growth and cooperatives in a panel discussion. We will focus on the city\, in particular Utrecht. Cooperatives will participate in the panel discussion to contribute to the discussion from their practical experience. DESCRIPTION:About the event\nStopping the climate and ecological crisis would be unlikely as long as our economy continues growing. In fact\, the degrowth movement\, which is rapidly gaining popularity among activists and scientists\, advocates for the deliberate scaling back of overproduction and overconsumption to bring the economy back into balance with the living world in a way that reduces inequality and improves human well-being.\nBut what would a farewell to economic growth mean for geopolitics? Can a European Union that is the first to enter the post-growth era still remain (or become) a global player? Will it be able to defend itself\, its allies\, democracy\, and the international rule of law against aggressive autocrats?\nThe transition to a post-growth society must be a democratic one. But that is far from obvious at a time when authoritarian regimes are invading or threatening their democratic neighbours. \nContext\nThe new transnational project Geopolitics of a post-growth Europe will explore the tensions between degrowth/post-growth and geopolitics. SUMMARY:Sources of Rest: Sustainable Tourism in Serbia (Belgrade)
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nThe development of tourism is an important aspect of the economic activities of a country because it enables the inflow of foreign capital\, economic growth\, and job creation. It also holds invaluable opportunities for exchange and understanding between and beyond the citizens of Europe. However\, inadequate development and implementation of tourism plans can make it impossible to use its potential in an adequate way. The business and development of this economic branch\, especially in less developed countries\, generally has disastrous consequences for the environment and the local community. The development of mass tourism in popular locations leads to the mass exploitation of natural resources and their destruction\, while most of the income goes to the owners of large hotel chains and companies at the expense of the local community\, which is mostly engaged in seasonal work.  \nSerbia is a country that has many natural beauties and a huge tourist potential\, but that potential must not become an object of exploitation. In order to prevent this scenario\, it is necessary to adopt adequate plans and strategies\, and for that it is important to organize discussions and hear the opinion of not only experts and the civil sector\, but local communities\, which are the most important element of tourism development planning and whose opinion is generally the least heard. In this panel discussion\, we will discuss the findings of such local discussions in the Stara Planina region and reflect more broadly on what the future could hold for fair and carbon-free tourism in Serbia.  \nContext\nThis event is part of GEF’s Fair and Carbon Free Tourism project\, which aims to identify and create conditions for collective action against detrimental social and environmental impacts of tourism. DESCRIPTION:Context\nWith a focus on the Eastern flank of Europe\, the 2022-2023 debates series seeks to enrich green and political ecology discourse. SUMMARY:Mobility in Rural Areas: An Unresolved Issue
DESCRIPTION:Context\nRural depopulation is a challenge for Europe as it affects large areas of its territory\, and Spain is no exception. This process has intensified in the last two decades. In Spain there are 6\,827 municipalities with no more than 5\,000 inhabitants\, accounting for 12% of the total population. In the last decade\, eight out of ten municipalities have lost their inhabitants\, a total of 410\,000 people. Ageing population\, lack of basic services such as health\, education\, culture or transport\, unemployment\, and the shortage of housing are among the main challenges for staying or settling in a village. \nOne of the key factors in this situation\, as we have already mentioned\, is mobility. The absence of public transport means that dependence on the private car or on the solidarity of neighbours is fundamental. Going to the doctor\, shopping\, going to the bank or taking children to school can be a chore if you do not have a private car or are not able to use one. This is particularly serious for women and the elderly. \nThe bad situation of public transport in Spain\, far from being reversed\, has worsened in recent years. The conventional train\, the least polluting transport system\, has been progressively abandoned while large high-speed train lines have been promoted – after China we are the country with the most extensive high-speed train network in the world – a type of transport that is a minority\, expensive\, unprofitable\, and inefficient\, thus widening the inequality gap between geographies. \nThe search for realistic long-term solutions\, adapted to each region and each community\, which improve mobility in rural areas\, is a social and environmental obligation and a lever to reverse the depopulation process by revitalising economic activity. \nWe are on the verge of a transition towards a low-carbon model of society\, so it is urgent to work on strategies that make it compatible with the improvement of transport in the rural world. \nAbout the event\nWe will hold this conference on rural mobility in El Burgo de Osma\, a village in the province of Soria – the least densely populated province in Spain – to learn first-hand about the demands and proposals of its inhabitants on this issue. We will have examples of good practices and we will know what policies are being implemented in Spain and in the EU. DESCRIPTION:About the event:\nWomen are everywhere! The women’s struggle continues on the streets\, in public arenas\, and also within the green movement. How are women and LGBTQI+ individuals represented in the ecology movement? What are the obstacles and challenges for women and LGBTQI+ representation? To these pressures\, we add a trap into which we as activists often unwittingly fall. SUMMARY:The Right to Sustainable Mobility: Connecting the Regions as a Way to Fight Poverty
DESCRIPTION:Context\nMobility plays a fundamental role in people’s lives. The ease of movement not only favours the freedom to choose the place of residence and the exercise the right to work\, but it is also essential to access basic public services such as education and health\, as well as leisure and enjoyment of free time. It is\, in short\, a determining element of people’s well-being and their quality of life. \nIn this sense\, the articulation of the subjective right to mobility in our societies\, which guarantees all citizens equal conditions of access and use of mobility services\, is becoming increasingly important. If mobility determines people’s quality of life\, the impossibility of accessing sufficient mobility (due to physical or mental conditions\, insufficient economic resources\, or other factors) supposes not only a personal impediment\, but also a breach of the constitutional principle of equality. \nThroughout the 20th century\, the economic system has linked this right with the use and enjoyment of the private car through an unprecedented cultural transformation. This has caused our towns and cities – and\, ultimately\, the geography in which we live – to be configured around the use and service of the private motor vehicle. No country in Europe has recognised the “right” to circulate and reach anywhere by car\, and yet the car has usurped the routes traditionally used by pedestrians and other means of transport. \nIn fact\, driving in a private car in a public space is a privilege rather than a right. Greenhouse gas emissions caused by automobiles\, energy inefficiency\, air and water pollution\, noise\, congestion of public space\, accidents or the appropriation of the land are privileges associated with the enjoyment of the automobile\, which are unaffordable and unsustainable for the planet\, and harmful for people’s health and for society as a whole. \nThe war in Ukraine has accelerated the energy crisis caused by the progressive depletion of fossil fuels. However\, the speed with which it has progressed has hit millions of people who use private vehicles for their daily commutes hard. According to official statistics from summer 2022\, in Spain\, 60% of drivers have limited the use of private vehicles\, and 5% have stopped using them all together. \nIn this context\, sustainable mobility is no longer simply a necessity to advance decarbonisation\, it has now become the main alternative to tackle poverty linked to dependence on the private combustion car. \nIt is the obligation of local institutions to facilitate active mobility. Before the crisis\, almost half of daily trips in the Basque Country were made on foot or by bicycle. However\, facilitating the transfer of 40% of trips that are made by private vehicles requires adequate mobility planning at the municipal and regional levels to ensure minimum standards of safety\, comfort\, and accessibility. This situation turns non-motorised mobility into a high-risk exercise\, instead of a routine habit. \nOn the other hand\, public transport continues to be the main tool to guarantee everyone the right to move without distinction of physical\, intellectual\, economic capacity\, or place of residence. In this sense\, it is the obligation of local and regional authorities to act in a coordinated manner to ensure sufficient public transport coverage with minimum quality and sustainability standards\, and with prices in line with the level of disposable income of users. \nLastly\, we cannot forget the role that public policies will play in the coming decades\, especially when it comes to reducing the demand for mobility\, such as 15-minute city urban planning or land reuse policies. SUMMARY:Peace & Security Debate Series: EU Responses to the War
DESCRIPTION:Context\nWith a focus on the Eastern flank of Europe\, the 2022-2023 debates series seeks to enrich green and political ecology ideas and actors and provide spaces to hear the voices of green actors\, peace and security experts\, as well as partners from the region. The goal of the Peace & Security Debate Series project\, which we are developing in cooperation with the Croatian organisation Sustainable Development Forum Green Window \, is to analyse the current crisis caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine\, as well as other topics related to peace and security at a European level. The project comprises three online discussions and a one-day conference that will take place in February 2023. \nAbout\nThe first discussion will focus on the causes of the war outbreak and the course of the conflict itself in the period from February to November 2022. Speakers will discuss the first reactions of the EU member states in the first weeks of the war and how they affected the internal relations between the member states and NATO. DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nDuring the book promotion of the recently published ‘’A Just Transition in Europe for a Better World’’ author and Editor Dirk Holemans will discuss the pathway towards a Just Transition and economic transformation with distinguished professors and students from the American University of Europe in Skopje. We will also bring together speakers from the EU and the Balkans with extensive knowledge on this topic to discuss the relevance of just transition at this precise moment in Europe and beyond. \nWe have to rethink production and consumption and adapt to a social circular economy. Only if the transformation is planned and executed in a just and fair way\, it will find support among the population. With this event -and the project it is part of- we are looking at the different dimensions of Just Transition and what are the politics and policies we should develop to make the change in our economic realities. \nContext\nThis event is part of the Green European Foundation’s Just Transition transnational project. SUMMARY:Local and EU transformative communities (Skopje)
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nAs part of this event we will discuss the wave of local green transformations across countless cities in Europe\, setting a path for a different urban living future. We will hear the perspectives of independent and green local counselors as well as community leaders\, whose actions and initiatives could lead the transformation. \nContext\nThe purpose of this roundtable will be to present GEF and its partners’ research and mapping of progressive and transformative practices on the Western Balkans\, explore possibilities for cities to organise themselves in trans-local networks\, and connect them to the Green movement to facilitate their exchanges. The findings of the Cities as places of hope project and local green examples presented at the event will focus on the fields of mobility\, housing\, energy\, waste\, food and climate. \nThis event will bring EU green local policies from different cities across Europe exploring transformative practices. SUMMARY:Transition to Energy Democracy (Skopje)
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nDuring this interactive sessions on Energy democracy\, we will discuss the current energy policies in North Macedonia and the need for a more democratic and inclusive society. As part of this exercise\, we will address the state of democracy in the EU and candidate countries\, looking at possible economic alternatives and considering the climate change urgency. \nContext\nThis is the second event with our Energy Democracy project in 2022. With Europe’s deepening energy crisis and the chronic coal dependency of the Balkan region\, the need for renewable energy is more evident than never before. On this event we will elaborate on previous experiences in Europe involving transitions in the energy sector to stimulate positive change in North Macedonia and the region. The discussions should result in a workshop to discuss and learn more about the prosumer and energy cooperative models\, the use of renewable energy and its potential for the economy. \nGEF and Sunrise are pioneers on the topic of Energy Democracy in North Macedonia and again with this second event in 2022 we will continue to discuss energy transformation towards participatory\, inclusive and a decentralised green economy through the expansion of the Energy Democracy concept. SUMMARY:Resilience in the City\, How?
DESCRIPTION:Context\nResilient cities are able to withstand potential disasters\, whether they are social\, economic or geographical. The climate crisis\, in particular\, is  affecting the way people live in cities more and more. It creates social injustices with the most vulnerable communities being affected the most.
