SUMMARY:Sources of Rest: Sustainable Tourism in Serbia (Belgrade)
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nThe development of tourism is an important aspect of the economic activities of a country because it enables the inflow of foreign capital\, economic growth\, and job creation. It also holds invaluable opportunities for exchange and understanding between and beyond the citizens of Europe. However\, inadequate development and implementation of tourism plans can make it impossible to use its potential in an adequate way. The business and development of this economic branch\, especially in less developed countries\, generally has disastrous consequences for the environment and the local community. The development of mass tourism in popular locations leads to the mass exploitation of natural resources and their destruction\, while most of the income goes to the owners of large hotel chains and companies at the expense of the local community\, which is mostly engaged in seasonal work.  \nSerbia is a country that has many natural beauties and a huge tourist potential\, but that potential must not become an object of exploitation. In order to prevent this scenario\, it is necessary to adopt adequate plans and strategies\, and for that it is important to organize discussions and hear the opinion of not only experts and the civil sector\, but local communities\, which are the most important element of tourism development planning and whose opinion is generally the least heard. In this panel discussion\, we will discuss the findings of such local discussions in the Stara Planina region and reflect more broadly on what the future could hold for fair and carbon-free tourism in Serbia.  \nContext\nThis event is part of GEF’s Fair and Carbon Free Tourism project\, which aims to identify and create conditions for collective action against detrimental social and environmental impacts of tourism. By engaging stakeholders in partner countries and developing a European transnational discussion on these challenges\, we seek to build a community interested to transform this sector in the direction of low or zero carbon intensity and with a specific focus on social and economic justice.  \nSpeakers\nKatarina Lević – MA in Political Sciences and PolEkol researcher\, who studied spa tourism and tourism on Stara Planina  \nNataša Gligorijević – Director of the Center for Sustainable Development of Serbia  \nMilan Zlatanović\, MA in Political Sciences and PolEkol researcher\, who studied tourism on Stara Planina   \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: Saturday\, December 17th at 17:00  \nLocation: Cafe Bar 16\, Cetinjska 15a\, Belgrade\, Serbia  \nLanguage: Serbian  \nRegistration: No advance registration is necessary\, but you can join our facebook event for the latest updates.   \n\nThis event is organized by the Green European Foundation with the support of PolEkol and with the financial support of the European parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Putting the New Back In: The Green Deal for a World in Crisis (Copenhagen)

When the time comes to act the Greens respond. Looking ahead to the 2030 and 2050 European project\, how can Greens set the direction to overcome the challenges of a EGD that was designed in a pre-Covid and pre-conflict world\, and one that fails to account for key dimensions of wellbeing or care?  \n\nSpeakers: \n\nKira Peter Hansen\, MEP & Vice President of Greens/EFA Group in the European Parliament \nRosa Martínez Rodríguez\, former Member of the Spanish Parliament\nDirk Holemans\, Co-President of the Green European Foundation & Director of Oikos Thinktank \n\nModerator: Jamie Kendrick\, Editor-In-Chief\, Green European Journal  \n  \n Practicalities\nDate and Time: Friday 2nd December\, 1pm \nLocation: Christianhavn room at the CPH conference centre (Tietgensgade 65\, DK-1704 København). \nAudience: This session is open to all participants of the 6th Congress of the European Green Party. \n  \n\nThis project is organised by the Green European Foundation with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. SUMMARY:Sustainable Mobility Cannot Leave Anyone Behind
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThe EU is promoting policies and actions aimed at reducing pollution and improving air quality\, especially in the transport sector and in large cities. In fact\, the Court of Justice of the European Union has warned that failure by states to respond could lead to the withdrawal of funding from the EU budget.  \nUrban tolls\, low-emission zones and green taxation on car registrations are just some of the instruments that states\, regions\, and cities implement to make the polluter pays principle effective. But how can we mitigate the collateral effects of these measures on vulnerable groups such as workers dependent on private vehicles and those from lower socio-economic backgrounds? And how can we ensure that the ecological transition is just?  \nTo explore these important questions\, join us for a lively debate bringing together experts\, foundations\, and organisations working on proposals for a just ecological transition.   \nSpeakers\n\nDavid Lois\, Mobility Behaviour\, Professor of Social Psychology\, Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia\nLaura Dieguez\, Secretary for trade union action and just transitions\, Confederación Sindical de Comisiones Obreras \nGeorgina Montesinos\, Secretary of PTP (Promoció de Transport Públic)\nLena Widefjall\, Parliamentary Assistant Greens/EFA\n\nModerator: Marc Rius: President\, Nous Horitzons Foundation  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 30th November\, 6pm-7:30pm CET \nLocation: This event will take place in person at the Headquarters of the Confederación Sindical de Comisiones Obreras in Barcelona and online via Zoom.   \nLanguage:  The main languages of the event will be Catalan and English\, with simultaneous interpretation provided EN<>CAT.   \nRegistration: Please register in advance here! \nInformation in Catalan available here. \n  \n\nThis project is organised by the Green European Foundation and Heinrich Böll Stiftung with the support of Fundació Nous Horitzons\, and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Mobility in Rural Areas: An Unresolved Issue
DESCRIPTION:Context\nRural depopulation is a challenge for Europe as it affects large areas of its territory\, and Spain is no exception. This process has intensified in the last two decades. In Spain there are 6\,827 municipalities with no more than 5\,000 inhabitants\, accounting for 12% of the total population. In the last decade\, eight out of ten municipalities have lost their inhabitants\, a total of 410\,000 people. Ageing population\, lack of basic services such as health\, education\, culture or transport\, unemployment\, and the shortage of housing are among the main challenges for staying or settling in a village. \nOne of the key factors in this situation\, as we have already mentioned\, is mobility. The absence of public transport means that dependence on the private car or on the solidarity of neighbours is fundamental. Going to the doctor\, shopping\, going to the bank or taking children to school can be a chore if you do not have a private car or are not able to use one. This is particularly serious for women and the elderly. \nThe bad situation of public transport in Spain\, far from being reversed\, has worsened in recent years. The conventional train\, the least polluting transport system\, has been progressively abandoned while large high-speed train lines have been promoted – after China we are the country with the most extensive high-speed train network in the world – a type of transport that is a minority\, expensive\, unprofitable\, and inefficient\, thus widening the inequality gap between geographies. \nThe search for realistic long-term solutions\, adapted to each region and each community\, which improve mobility in rural areas\, is a social and environmental obligation and a lever to reverse the depopulation process by revitalising economic activity. \nWe are on the verge of a transition towards a low-carbon model of society\, so it is urgent to work on strategies that make it compatible with the improvement of transport in the rural world. \nAbout the event\nWe will hold this conference on rural mobility in El Burgo de Osma\, a village in the province of Soria – the least densely populated province in Spain – to learn first-hand about the demands and proposals of its inhabitants on this issue. We will have examples of good practices and we will know what policies are being implemented in Spain and in the EU. We will be joined by the following speakers: \n\nJuantxo López de Uralde\, Member of the Spanish Parliament and Chair of the Committee on Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge\nMarc Giménez\, advisor on transport and tourism to the Greens/EFA Group in the European Parliament\nRaquel Ramírez\, El Colletero Association (Nalda – La Rioja)\nPatxi Miranda\, CEO of KUDEA Services\nModerator: Rosa M. Tristán\, journalist\n\n  \nPracticalities\nThis is an in-person event taking place in El Burgo de Osma\, Soria\, Spain. It is open and free of charge\, no prior registration is required. \nThe event will take place in Spanish. An event recording with subtitles in English will be made available following the event. \n\nAudiovisual material\nThe event relates to the European Mobility Atlas\, corresponding Spanish translation\, and associated booklet\, Present and Future of Mobility in Spain. \n  \n\nThis project is organised by the Green European Foundation and Heinrich Böll Stiftung with the support of Transición Verde and El Hueco\, and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Feminist Leadership in the Ecology Movement (Istanbul)
DESCRIPTION:About the event:\nWomen are everywhere! The women’s struggle continues on the streets\, in public arenas\, and also within the green movement. How are women and LGBTQI+ individuals represented in the ecology movement? What are the obstacles and challenges for women and LGBTQI+ representation? What are the needs to increase the number of organized women and LGBTQI+ in the ecology movement in Turkey and across Europe? \nIn light of these initial questions\, we will discuss the intersectionality of the green movement and feminism under the frame of our “Feminists in the Environmental Movement” project\, and explore what we can do to strengthen diverse representation by nurturing and sustaining feminist organisation in the ecology movement. \nThis day-long workshop will enable participants to take the first steps and gain a better understanding of the shared struggle\, while listening to the experiences of local ecology\, women’s\, and LGBTQI+ organisations in the context of the intersectionality of ecology and feminism. \nContext:\nThis workshop is part of Feminists in the Environmental Movement\, a GEF transnational project that seeks to stimulate conversations around (the intersections of) gender and environmental justice across Europe. SUMMARY:Green Horizons Academy: The Good Collective (Belgrade)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThroughout Europe\, activists face numerous external pressures every day that threaten to stop their fight. To these pressures\, we add a trap into which we as activists often unwittingly fall. We have all witnessed or experienced (self)exploitation\, a productivity race to the bottom\, unequal distribution of work tasks and power\, various forms of discrimination\, and even burnout and giving up the fight. That is why GEF\, with the support of PolEkol\, decided to discuss and work on building a good collective at the Green Horizon Academy! During the three days of the Academy\, a series of lectures\, workshops and panels will be organised\, where we will try to answer some of the following questions:  \n\nWhat are good activist collectives? \nWhat do sustainable structures look like? \nHow to care for the mental health of activists and prevent burnout? \n\nOn the path to a good collective\, we have at our disposal knowledge and skills from the sphere of politics\, psychology\, sociology\, and other social sciences. Within the growing green movement\, they can help us apply the ideas we advocate for in public policies: the internal values and management of our organizations so that they are as humane and democratic as possible\, the working environment as stimulating and supportive as possible\, and collectives open to diversity. What does politics of care truly mean? \nProgramme\nFriday\, 18 November: Public Programme at Cultural Center GRAD  \n17:00 – 17:45 – Lecture “Tell me about happiness”  \n\nWith Branko Anćić\, Institute for Political Ecology\, Zagreb \n\n17:45 – 19:00 – Panel discussion “Are we good?”  \n\nWith Brajan Brković (civil activist)\, Isidora Petrović (Ne Davimo Belgrade)\, Maja Stojanović (Civic Initiative)\, and Dragan Srećković (organizational development consultant) \n\n  \nSaturday\, 19 November: Closed Training at Arka Barka  \n8:00 – 9:30 – Breakfast  \n10:00 – 11:00 – Welcome and introduction of participants  \n11:00 – 13:00 – Workshop: Structures for a Good Collective  \n\nWith Marina Škrabalo\, Solidarna.HR \n\n13:00 – 14:30 – Lunch  \n14:30 – 16:00 – Workshop: Put out the fire and save the flame – burnout prevention  \n\nWith Doris Rafajlovski\, psychotherapist \n\n16:00 – 16:30 – Coffee break  \n16:30 – 18:00 – Fishbowl discussion: Personal and political – feminization of the work of organizations  \n\nWith Lidija Vasiljević and Jelena Memet \n\n19:30 – Dinner  \n  \nSunday\, 20 November: Closed Training at Arka Barka  \n10:00 – 11:00 – Let’s take a deep breath – yoga\, breathing\, anti-stress workshop  \n\nWith Nada Milosević \n\n11:15-13:00 – Workshop – Sustainable collective: communication\, conflicts and support  \n\nWith Aleksandra Živković\, environmental activist\, professional coach and trainer \n\n13:00 – 14:00 – Impressions and conclusions  \n14:00 – Lunch  \n\nPracticalities\nThe Good Horizons Academy consists of two parts: a public programme and a private\, invite-only training. All activities will take place in Serbo-Croat-Bosnian\, with informal translation provided on the spot where needed.  \nPublic Programme  \nDate and time: Friday\, 18 November from 17:00 – 19:00  \nLocation: Cultural center GRAD\, Braće Krsmanović 4\, Belgrade  \nRegistration: No prior registration needed. You can also follow the event online via Facebook.  \nInvite-Only Training  \nThe two-day training will take place after the public programme\, with workshops\, lectures\, and experience-sharing sessions. SUMMARY:The Right to Sustainable Mobility: Connecting the Regions as a Way to Fight Poverty
DESCRIPTION:Context\nMobility plays a fundamental role in people’s lives. The ease of movement not only favours the freedom to choose the place of residence and the exercise the right to work\, but it is also essential to access basic public services such as education and health\, as well as leisure and enjoyment of free time. It is\, in short\, a determining element of people’s well-being and their quality of life. \nIn this sense\, the articulation of the subjective right to mobility in our societies\, which guarantees all citizens equal conditions of access and use of mobility services\, is becoming increasingly important. If mobility determines people’s quality of life\, the impossibility of accessing sufficient mobility (due to physical or mental conditions\, insufficient economic resources\, or other factors) supposes not only a personal impediment\, but also a breach of the constitutional principle of equality. \nThroughout the 20th century\, the economic system has linked this right with the use and enjoyment of the private car through an unprecedented cultural transformation. This has caused our towns and cities – and\, ultimately\, the geography in which we live – to be configured around the use and service of the private motor vehicle. No country in Europe has recognised the “right” to circulate and reach anywhere by car\, and yet the car has usurped the routes traditionally used by pedestrians and other means of transport. \nIn fact\, driving in a private car in a public space is a privilege rather than a right. Greenhouse gas emissions caused by automobiles\, energy inefficiency\, air and water pollution\, noise\, congestion of public space\, accidents or the appropriation of the land are privileges associated with the enjoyment of the automobile\, which are unaffordable and unsustainable for the planet\, and harmful for people’s health and for society as a whole. \nThe war in Ukraine has accelerated the energy crisis caused by the progressive depletion of fossil fuels. However\, the speed with which it has progressed has hit millions of people who use private vehicles for their daily commutes hard. According to official statistics from summer 2022\, in Spain\, 60% of drivers have limited the use of private vehicles\, and 5% have stopped using them all together. \nIn this context\, sustainable mobility is no longer simply a necessity to advance decarbonisation\, it has now become the main alternative to tackle poverty linked to dependence on the private combustion car. \nIt is the obligation of local institutions to facilitate active mobility. Before the crisis\, almost half of daily trips in the Basque Country were made on foot or by bicycle. However\, facilitating the transfer of 40% of trips that are made by private vehicles requires adequate mobility planning at the municipal and regional levels to ensure minimum standards of safety\, comfort\, and accessibility. This situation turns non-motorised mobility into a high-risk exercise\, instead of a routine habit. \nOn the other hand\, public transport continues to be the main tool to guarantee everyone the right to move without distinction of physical\, intellectual\, economic capacity\, or place of residence. In this sense\, it is the obligation of local and regional authorities to act in a coordinated manner to ensure sufficient public transport coverage with minimum quality and sustainability standards\, and with prices in line with the level of disposable income of users. \nLastly\, we cannot forget the role that public policies will play in the coming decades\, especially when it comes to reducing the demand for mobility\, such as 15-minute city urban planning or land reuse policies. These will need to be combined with increased attention to rising property prices (which drive those with lower incomes to the periphery of cities)\, as well as addressing the social and cultural reconstruction of our way of life on a fairer and more sustainable basis. \nSpeakers\n\nPaz Serra\, EcoPolítica.\nJoserra Becerra\, Berdeak EQUO.\nPhilipp Cerny\, Chief Executive Editor of the European Mobility Atlas 2021.\nRosa Martínez\, Expert in electric mobility.\nJosu Ramirez\, Leber Planning and Engineering.\nLinda Gaasch\, European Committee of the Regions (video).\n\nPracticalities\nDate and Time:  Thursday 17 November\, from 18:30 to 20:00 (CET). \nLocation: Hybrid event\, Dock (Uribitarte Pasealekua\, 3 Bilbao) and Zoom. \nLanguage: The main language of the debate will be Spanish. Simultaneous interpretation will be provided ES<>EN. \nThe event is hybrid\, open and free with prior registration through this form. Once registration has been completed\, a confirmation email will be sent with the access details for joining the meeting. \nReading material\nThe event relates to the European Mobility Atlas\, corresponding Spanish translation\, and associated booklet\, Present and Future of Mobility in Spain. \n\nThis project is organised by the Green European Foundation and Heinrich Boll Stiftung with the support of EcoPolítica and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Transition to Energy Democracy (Skopje)
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nDuring this interactive sessions on Energy democracy\, we will discuss the current energy policies in North Macedonia and the need for a more democratic and inclusive society. As part of this exercise\, we will address the state of democracy in the EU and candidate countries\, looking at possible economic alternatives and considering the climate change urgency. \nContext\nThis is the second event with our Energy Democracy project in 2022. With Europe’s deepening energy crisis and the chronic coal dependency of the Balkan region\, the need for renewable energy is more evident than never before. On this event we will elaborate on previous experiences in Europe involving transitions in the energy sector to stimulate positive change in North Macedonia and the region. The discussions should result in a workshop to discuss and learn more about the prosumer and energy cooperative models\, the use of renewable energy and its potential for the economy. \nGEF and Sunrise are pioneers on the topic of Energy Democracy in North Macedonia and again with this second event in 2022 we will continue to discuss energy transformation towards participatory\, inclusive and a decentralised green economy through the expansion of the Energy Democracy concept. Together we will contribute to the debates and practices on EU level with experiences and challenges from the Balkans. \nSpeakers\nSpeakers will be announced shortly.\n\nProgramme\n15:00                   Welcome and introduction \n15:10-15:20       Session with speaker on Energy Democracy \n15:20-16:00      Workshop sessions on prosumer models in the EU and the region of the Western balkans \n16:00-16:20      Coffee break \n16:20-17:00      Workshop sessions on energy cooperatives with European experiences and regional approach \n17:00-19:00        Dinner and discussion \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 15th November\, 3pm \nLocation: Skopje \nLanguage: The primary language is Macedonian but simultaneous translation in English will be provided.  \nAudience: Closed event with invitation only. \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Sunrise and with the financial support of the European parliament to the Green European Foundation.  \n

SUMMARY:Resilience in the City\, How?
DESCRIPTION:Context\nResilient cities are able to withstand potential disasters\, whether they are social\, economic or geographical. The climate crisis\, in particular\, is  affecting the way people live in cities more and more. It creates social injustices with the most vulnerable communities being affected the most. Some local governments in Europe address these challenges by adopting transformative policies and innovative solutions to increase the accessibility to basic needs such as health\, sanitation\, housing\, food\, transportation\, and water management. \nThe Green European Foundation alongside the Green Thought Association\, aim to be a part of the solution by organizing the webinar “Resilience in the City\, How?” within the scope of the ongoing project “Cities as Places of Hope”. \nAbout the event\nDuring this conference\, various urban actors\, academics and green activists will gather to raise awareness\, build capacities and discuss how cities could become more resilient. Within the scope of resilience\, the experts will focus on the social and ecological issues caused by the climate crisis and social injustice through various examples. \nProgramme\nSession 1: Politics of Resilience\n13:05 – 14:05 \n\nLast three years with Cities As Place of Hope – Dirk Holemans\nWhat is Resilience?- Eray Çaylı\n14:05- 14:15 Break\n\nSession 2: Resilience in the Context of Food\, Housing and Social Issues\n14.15- 15.30 \n\nResilience and Housing in Europe – Kim Van Sparrentak\nFeeding the Metropolis During A Crisis – Berkan Özyer\n Increasing Social Resilience in the City – Who Owns the Night?- Yasemin Bahçekapılı\n\n15.30-16.30 \n\nOpen Session\n\nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 15 November 2022 at 13.00 (CET+3). \nLocation: Online \nLanguage: Turkish \nRegistration: Sign up here. \n  \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Green Thought Association and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. SUMMARY:Just Green Transition for a Better World (Belgrade)
DESCRIPTION:About the event \nThe transition to a green economy and stronger action against climate are imperative\, there’s no doubt. However\, it is equally important that in this process no one gets left behind\, especially those who are already in a vulnerable position. That’s why Polekol\, together with partners from Belgium\, Spain\, Finland\, Great Britain\, Macedonia and Croatia\, joined this project and contributed to the book “European Just Transition for a Better World” whose aim is to look at key topics related to a just and green transition. \nWhat makes this book unique is the pan-European and global approach\, which looks at a just transition in a wider context\, as well as the green perspective it describes. Authors and chapters include the European Union (EU) and the Global South\, with a particular focus on Namibia and Colombia. \nContext \nThe book covers many aspects\, including historical perspectives\, regional approaches\, European policy developments\, youth perspectives and industries in transition\, with a focus on specific struggles\, such as unemployment. \n‘’Only a vision of transition that considers the complexity\, context dependency and interconnections of the multiple challenges that we face will be able to bring about the radical change that is so urgently needed. This shows that you cannot implement environmental policies without a social framework. Or\, in other words: either climate policy will be social or it will not ‘be’ at all.’’ is a quote from the editor of the book\, Dirk Holemans from the Belgian Think Tank\, Oikos. \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 14th November 2022\, 17:00 – 19:00 CET \nLocation: Prostor Miljenko Dereta\, Dobračina 55\, Belgrade\, Serbia \nFormat: In person event \nLanguage: The main language of this event will be English\, with simultaneous interpretation provided for the speakers \nRegistrations: Please register via the Facebook link: Pravedna zelena tranzicija za bolji svet – promocija knjige i diskusija | Facebook \n  \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Polekol and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. SUMMARY:Knowledge Community – Trade Unions and degrowth
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nTaking place at the International Trade Union House\, the roundtable meeting is part of the GEF Flagship Initiative – Knowledge Communities which focuses on the Social Dimensions of the Green Deal. Together with our Partners Research & Degrowth we have embarked on a journey to jointly identify alternative models that address the social dimension of the green transition.   \nThe meeting will be divided into two main sessions: Firstly\, Nora Räthzel\, Researcher from the Umeå University will present the broader concept of the Political Brief on the topic of Trade Unions and Degrowth . In the second session\, the KC participants will have the opportunity to give their input\, enrich and challenge some of the most controversial issues identified and provide space for more in-depth discussions.   \nContext\nThe GEF Knowledge Community roundtable meeting is a side-event of the broader ‘’A Just Transition beyond growth?’’ conference\, which will take place 8-9th December in the International Trade Union House in Brussels.   \nThe aim of the ETUI-ETUC-EEB-ULB-GEF conference is to build bridges between the trade union movement and the post- and de-growth community\, and to situate a transformative just transition vision within the ‘beyond growth’ narrative. It should prompt reflection on how the (contested) concept of just transition and related policies\, now a top priority in trade union agendas\, fit – or can fit – with the futures proposed by post-growth scholars\, and what just transition policies might look like in an alternative green deal for Europe that is not a ‘green growth’ strategy but a more radical societal and economic transformation.  \nProgramme\nFriday\, 9th November: International Trade Union House   \n14:00 – 14:15 – Introduction and welcome words   \nwith Laurent Standaert\, Political Director\, Green European Foundation   \n14:15 – 14:30 – Tour de table   \n14:30 – 15:00 – Political Brief concept presentation   \nwith Nora Räthzel\, Researcher\, Umeå University   \n15:00 – 16:30 – Moderated open discussion   \n16:30 – end of Knowledge Community meeting   \n  \nPracticalities\nDate and time: Friday\, 9th December from 2pm-4:30pm \nLocation: Boulevard Roi Albert II 5\, 1000 Brussels  \nRegistration: This event is invitation only   \n  \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Research & Degrowth and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. SUMMARY:‘A European Just Transition for a Better World’ (Brussels)
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nThis event is part of the Green European Foundation’s Just Transition transnational project. The project looks into the question of transforming from an extractive to a regenerative economy in a just and equitable way to find the necessary support among the population. SUMMARY:Rethinking Demand: Realities and Opportunities (Dublin/online)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThe Green European Foundations is bringing together Green House Think Tank (UK)\, Etopia (Belgium) and Green Foundation Ireland at an event hosted with the Lord Mayor of Dublin Caroline Conroy. This event will launch our Rethinking Demand Framing Paper and explore the complexity of the actions needed to reduce our demand for energy as well as the politics involved in doing so.   \nAs the urgency of the need to limit emissions to prevent further climate harm grows\, and the all-encompassing nature of achieving this dawns\, the pivotal role of rethinking how our societies deliver wellbeing for all has become ever more critical. During this conference\, sessions will explore how social and business practices\, infrastructure\, and our governance structures can be transformed to reduce the collective demand for energy and unlock a future without fossil fuels. \nContext\nThis event is part of the GEF transnational project Climate Emergency Economy: Rethinking Demand. Building on several years of work exploring what it means to create an economy fit for the climate emergency\, GEF and its partners are this year focusing on the crucial question of how to reduce demand for energy and materials. With the support of Green House Think Tank\, Etopia\, and Green Foundation Ireland\, we will explore how to frame rethinking demand politically\, and articulate clear plans for demand reduction so green narratives are better grounded in reality and a shared vision of hope.  \nProgramme\nPlease note that all times are indicated in IST/BST. SUMMARY:Rethinking Demand: Sufficiency Policies for a Post-Growth Society
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nSoaring energy prices are pushing European states to urgently implement energy saving measures in all sectors\, as well as financial supports for the most exposed households and businesses. In France\, President Macron did not hesitate to speak of “the end of abundance” and the implementation of a “great sobriety plan”. In Germany\, particularly exposed to the closing of the Russian gas tap\, the Federal State has implemented a series of energy saving measures. Among other things\, large gas consumers are required to register and make themselves available in case of a shortage. In Belgium\, the government has been refining its energy emergency plan for several months with data from large consumers and is considering ways to help the most vulnerable to pay their bills.  \nAre European states ready for the advent of a post-growth society? Can the ecological project of a sober society now inspire public policies? Concretely\, what does a post-growth economic policy look like? What indicators exist to assess these policies? These questions and more will be tackled in this cross-country dialogue. With the support of Green House Think Tank\, Etopia\, and Green Foundation Ireland\, we are exploring how to frame rethinking demand politically\, and articulate clear plans for demand reduction so green narratives are better grounded in reality and a shared vision of hope.  \nSpeakers\nTo discuss this pressing topic\, we will be joined by a fantastic panel of experts:  \n\nYves Marignac – Négawatt\, France \nPhilippe Roman – ICHEC\, Belgium \nMarula Tsagkari – TU Delft / R&D\, Greece \nLasse Thiele – Konzeptwerk\, Germany \nNadine Storey – Green House think tank\, UK \nLeon Leuser – Wachstumswende\, Germany \n\nThe session will begin with a brief presentation of our Rethinking Energy Demand report\, by co-author Nadine Storey (Green House think tank)\, followed by discussion with all our panelists.    \nPracticalities\nDate & Time: Wednesday\, October 26th (12:00-14:00 CET)  \nLocation: Online\, via Zoom. Please register in advance via this link.   \nAudience: Open to all registered participants. SUMMARY:The Dark Side of the Cloud
DESCRIPTION:Context\nWhen we think of the cloud\, we imagine it as something ethereal\, light and dematerialised. We don’t visualise the millions of devices\, thousands of kilometres of cables\, gigantic data storage\, and processing centres\, or the satellites that make up its immense infrastructure. We don’t conceive the enormous amount of mineral\, water\, and energy resources required for its operation. Nor the environmental impacts resulting from their production and disposal. \nDigital technologies have undoubtedly brought great advances for humanity. However\, if we want to continue to benefit from them in the future\, as well as from a healthy environment\, we must delve deeper into that dark side of the cloud and correct its pernicious effects. This is especially relevant at the present time\, with European post-covid policies pushing for digitalisation as a key element for economic recovery. And not only that\, this endeavour aims to face multiple crises\, including the global supply crisis; the energy crisis aggravated by the war in Ukraine; and an increasingly worrying climate and environmental crisis. \nThese will be discussed in this series\, as well as alternatives for a more energy-efficient\, sustainable and long-lasting digitalisation. \n\n  \nAbout\nThe series “The dark side of the cloud. The environmental impact of the virtual” is organised by the Green European Foundation (GEF) in collaboration with Fundación Transición Verde and La Casa Encendida. \nIt will take place on 20 and 27 October and 3 November\, from 18:00 to 19:30 (CEST) and consists of the following round tables. \n\n20 October: “Feeding the Beast. SUMMARY:Green-Red Dialogues: Italian Election Consequences (Barcelona)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nEurope is facing a multitude of crises. Just as the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic appeared to be behind us\, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine brought war back to the continent at tremendous human and material cost. As ordinary citizens continue to lose their lives to senseless violence\, the rest of Europe prepares for a difficult winter of energy crisis and social unrest.    \nAnd as they say\, in crises there are always ghosts. Those ghosts that some take advantage of to implant the ideas of fear\, wrecking instead of building and fomenting panic to weaken the democratic system. It is in this context that we look to Italy\, where the elections have produced a far-right coalition that is set to govern in the coming years.  \nHow does it affect us that a far-right government governs in a strategically key country for Europe\, a country that can offer “help” to Putin’s Russia? What consequences and lessons do these results hold for the left and environmental movements? Should we be worrying about threats to European democracy? Together with our speakers\, we will explore these crucial questions for the future of Europe.   \nContext\nGEF’s Green Red Dialogues\, organised with the support of Fundació Nous Horitzons\, aim to tackle pressing issues of our time and the challenges Europe faces with an explicit social and green lens. From COVID-19 to the war in Ukraine\, far right resurgence to inflation–these issues tend to reverberate across multiple countries and domains. Through the dialogues\, we connect the red and the green and highlight Southern European perspectives on crucial topics and developments across the continent.  \nSpeakers\nErnest Urtasun – MEP\, Greens/EFA  \nBenedetta de Marte–Secretary General of European Green Party  \nHéctor Sánchez Margalef–researcher at CIDOB (Barcelona Centre for International Affairs)  \nPaola lo Cascio–professor of history at the University of Barcelona  \nModerated by Marc Rius  \nPracticalities\nDate and time: Wednesday\, October 19th\, 18:00–19:30  \nLocation: CCOO de Catalunya Assembly Space – Via Laietana 16\, Barcelona   \nLanguage: Catalan and English (simultaneous translation will be provided)  \nRegistration: Pre-registration is not required\, but please arrive on time  \nFurther reading\nThe Climate Won’t Wait for Italian Politics  \nSwedish Elections and the Mainstreaming of the Far Right  \nNationalising the Climate: Is the European Far Right Turning Green?  \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Fundacio Nous Horitzons and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Cities as Places of Hope: Expert Meeting (Utrecht)
DESCRIPTION:About\nCities all around the world have the potential to be the primary drivers behind the transition towards a sustainable and just society. At the moment\, however\, cities cannot provide a good life for all within planetary boundaries. They are still part of an economic system that depends on hyper consumption and extractivism. In this context\, a foundational shift is needed\, starting with a transformation in our world view. A shift that departs from the view of humans as homo economicus\, towards a mode of living that recognises the fundamental vulnerability of human and non-human life. A world view based on the ethics of care as the founding principle for a new city. The question is how we can make this world view a reality. Whit what reforms can local politicians start working today? This expert meeting will focus on the reforms that local politicians can start working on today and explore the contours of a framework for an ecologically and socially just city. \nContext\nThis expert meeting is part of the Green European Foundations project Cities as Places of Hope\, in which we highlight inspiring examples of progressive cities across Europe which are the frontrunners of the social-ecological transition. \nOrganizers\nDirk Holemans\, Coordinator of Oikos Think Tank\, Co-president of the Green European Foundation\nHans Rodenburg\, Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks\, Project Coordinator \nPracticalities\nDate and time: Tuesday\, 18th October from 15.00 to 17.00 CET. \nAudience: This expert meeting will take place in Dutch and is invitation only. \n  \n\nThis project is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks and Oikos Think Tank with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.
