SUMMARY:Climate Change Impacts on Rural Women: Local Stories
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nOur planet is in danger\, and there are people fighting for their homes daily whose voices are not being heard. Conversations and decision-making around the climate crisis too often highlight the voices and experiences of a limited few\, depriving us of crucial perspectives in national and European conversations. Moreover\, we know that the effects of the climate crisis have a disproportionate impact on specific demographics\, such as women and those living in rural communities.   \nThis year\, local reporters in seven countries of Central and Eastern Europe have visited the areas harmed by climate change and harsh industries\, and listened to the inspiring stories of young women living in rural areas.   \nWe will hear their perspectives and discuss the intersection of feminist and environmental movements through different lenses they discovered in these local stories.  \nContext\nThis webinar is part of Feminists in the Environmental Movement\, a GEF transnational project that seeks to stimulate conversations around (the intersections of) gender and environmental justice across Europe. The project is implemented with the support of Visio (Finland)\, Green Economics Institute (UK)\, Oikos (Belgium)\, Strefa Zieleni (Poland)\, Green Thought Association (Turkey)\, and CDNEE.   \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: Friday\, August 26th (18:00-19:00 CEST)  \nLocation: Online \nRegistration: Please register in advance here. \nAudience: This webinar is open to all interested participants. It will consist of presentations from the local reporters followed by audience Q&A and discussion. The webinar will take place in English.  \nRelated Reading\nFor more on this topic\, check out these articles from our flagship publication\, the Green European Journal:  \nFighting the Patriarchy to Save the Planet  \nGender in Climate Governance: Telling Numbers but Who is Listening?  \nGender Justice: Beyond Binaries and Buzzwords  \nDown but Not Out: Central Europe’s Independent Media  \nSave the Facts: Journalism as a Weapon against Disinformation  \nCommunities Against Climate Change: Exploring Resilience in Rural Scotland  \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Cooperation and Development Network Eastern Europe (CDNEE) and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. SUMMARY:Ecotransformation Summer School (Litomyšl)
DESCRIPTION:Context\nThe quick transformation of European energy is one of our biggest challenges today. Russia’s attack on Ukraine\, and thus on democracy and fundamental freedom\, has shown that investment in renewable energy production and storage is crucial not only for tackling the climate crisis and mitigating its effects but also as part of a strategy to increase European security and our energy independence. \nUnfortunately\, the Czech Republic is still lagging behind in this regard. Will the amendment to the Energy Act bring a change that sets rules for community energy production? What can cities and municipalities do today to promote renewables and increase energy self-sufficiency? The ongoing crises highlight the need for significant changes in how we operate as a society\, how we manage limited resources\, care for the natural environment\, and care for each other. What is the role of politicians\, activists and other partners in achieving such change? How can we support each other and spread green ideas? These are the questions we’d like to debate this during this summer school. \nAbout Ecotransformation 2022\nEcotransformation is an environmental policy summer school\, but it’s also a weekend full of interesting seminars\, debates\, presentations and experiential workshops aimed at helping you develop skills to drive green social change. In this third edition\, we will focus on the following areas and topics: \n\nEnergy revolution: how cities and municipalities can support the development of renewable energy sources and contribute to increasing energy security\nCommunity energy opportunities: experience from other European countries and what we can expect in connection with the new energy law organizing across movements: how to achieve lasting change in a sustainable\, inclusive and effective way – communication\, cooperation\, capacity building and finding partners in different parts of society\nSeeking consensus in a divided society: public opinion is influenced by a number of stereotypes and deliberate misinformation\, the debate on issues such as helping refugees is dominated by populists who reduce it to simple slogans\, a splitting society – what we can do about it and how to talk to people who do not share our opinions\n\n  \nWho is this summer school for?\nWe invite anyone passionate about green policy and wanting to take an active part in promoting it. This event can be beneficial for people interested in environmental issues who want to explore how to implement practical sustainable solutions such as activists\, researchers\, students\, scientists\, teachers\, politicians\, journalists and so on. \n\nProgramme\nTHURSDAY 14 JULY \n19:00–21:00 Public Debate: Pacifism and green values in the light of the war in Ukraine\nDagmar Tutschek (Co-president of the Green European Foundation and chair of FREDA\, Austria)\nKateřina Vnoučková (Faculty of Social Science\, Charles University in Prague) \nModerator: Michal Berg \n\nFRIDAY 15 JULY \n9:00–9:45 \nIntroduction & Ice-breakers\nKlára Berg (GEF) \n10:00–11:00 \nCommunity energy – experience from Austria – Michael Sigmund\, Vice Mayor of Pressbaum\, Austria \nModern waste management – example of good practice – Jan Pažin\, Choceň Town Councillor \n11:15–12:45 \nThe energy revolution: reducing our dependence on Russian fossil fuels – Patrícia Čekanová\, Association of Community Energy of the Czech Republic \n14:30–16:00 \nOrganizing the climate movement – Klára Bělíčková\, Klára Suková\, Fridays for Future Czech Republic \nWalking tour of Litomyšl – Citizen participation in the design of urban public space – Daniel Brýdl\, Litomyšl Town Mayor \n16:30–18:00 \nCommunity energy projects: energy self-sufficiency of municipalities – Jiří Krist\, Local Action Group Opavsko \nActive hope – doing activism sustainably (workshop) – Martin Nawrath\, therapist and facilitator \n20:00–21:30 \nDebate: Barriers and opportunities for engaging women in active citizenship\nAnna Kárníková (Friends of the Earth Czech Republic)\nKlára Bělíčková (Fridays for Future Czech Republic)\nEliška Koldová (cooperative SdruŽeny)\nModerator: Marie Sehnalová \n\nSATURDAY 16 JULY \n9:00–10:30 \nGroup Work & networking\nKlára Berg (GEF) \n10:45–12:15 \nBuilding communities – experience from Poland (workshop in English) – Dagmara Kubik\, Rzecz Społeczna \nAgeing in the city\, cities friendly to older people – Marcela Petrová Kafková\, Department of Sociology\, Faculty of Social Studies\, Masaryk University in Brno \n14:30–16:00 \nHow to engage religious communities in environmental issues – Marek Drápal\, Czech Christian Environmental Network (ČKES) \nLight pollution – Hynek Medřický\, the lighting expert \n16:30–18:00 \nKlimavize – the future of the Czech climate movement – Tereza Navarová\, klimavize.cz \nCitizens’ assemblies as a tool for change – Andrea Culková\, filmmaker\, author of the documentary Citizens’ Assemblies \n20:00–21:30 \nCivil society in Ukraine before and during the war (helping activists in occupied Ukraine) – Milan Štefanec\, NESEHNUTÍ \n\nSUNDAY 17 JULY \n9:00 – 12:30 \nOpen space – an opportunity to bring your own topics \n\nPracticalities\nDate: 14. 07- 17. 07. 2022 \nLocation: Castle Hill in Litomyšl \nPrice: The price of the registration fee includes accommodation and meals \n– basic amount of fee 990 CZK\n– reduced fee 650 CZK\n– sponsorship fee (any amount over 990 CZK) \nThe reduced fee is intended for those participants who\, for whatever reason\, cannot afford the basic fee – we do not require any justification. SUMMARY:The Future of Romania’s Forests
DESCRIPTION:Context\nLess than 2% of Europe’s land mass is still in its initial state: untouched by human activity. Tropical forests are not the only ones being cut or burnt down for human consumption. The same happens at an alarming rate with the last virgin forests and contiguous forest areas in Central and Eastern Europe. Corruption\, organised crime behind the destruction of forests and the billion-euro industry benefiting from illegal logging provide the framework for the big lumber companies to increase their profits. \nIn Romania\, the problem of clearing forests is not new\, and despite more stringent legislation in recent years\, the problem persists. The economic pressure to cut as much as possible on the one hand\, and the complicity of local authorities who get their share on the other\, prepare the ground for a criminal network that acts against climate\, nature and men–and does not even shrink back from murder. \nWood is an extremely valuable resource for Romanians. Over 50% of Romania’s households depend on wood-burning for heating. Plans to develop a sustainable heating system in the country are lagging behind and gas\, its most prominent alternative\, is leaving Romanians with unattainable expenses. The green transition in Romania is therefore an environmental imperative\, but also a social one. \nIllegal logging\, extensive use of biomass by various industries and an aggressive lobbying network are behind ecosystem destruction\, and displaced wildlife in the European last virgin forests. The EU’s ambitions to achieve climate neutrality by 2050\, while ensuring a just and socially fair transition\, will pose a real challenge. However\, it will also present a much needed opportunity to reverse the long-term effects\, and the devastating impact that spans way beyond the Romanian national borders. \n  \nAbout the event\nBuilding on its 2-year project Deforestation in Europe\, the Green European Foundation will organise a 1-day event in Iasi\, Romania on 9 July 2022. \nThe event will bring together civil society representatives\, activists\, concerned citizens and policymakers from Romania and abroad\, with the following main objectives: \n\nBuild common understanding on the complex systemic disfunction behind illegal logging and loss of biodiversity in Romania’s protected forests\, while placing the issue in the larger European context.\nDiscuss Romania’s energetic future and formulate recommendations for an energy system in accordance with national and European climate targets.\nProvide a space for experience sharing and connection between local civil society actors from Romania and other parts of Europe.\n\n  \nSpeakers\n10:00-10:15 Welcome words – Ioana Banach-Sirbu\, GEF Managing Director \n\n10:15-11:30 Plenary session – Illegal Logging and the Future of Romania’s Energy System \nThomas Waitz – Green MEP and EGP Co-chair \nCătălina Rădulescu – Lawyer\, Agent Green \nKalliopi Stara – Researcher\, Department of Biological Applications and Technology\, University of Ioannina \nMihai Diac – Founder\, Codrii Iaşilor (Old Woods of Iasi) \nModerated by: Teia Ciulacu – President\, Viitor Plus \n\n11:30-12:00 Coffee break \n\n12:00-13:00 Parallel sessions  \n\n\n\nWORKSHOP I \nBârnova Repedea Forest\, the Natural Parc of Iasi \nCătălina Rădulescu – Lawyer\, Agent Green \nThis workshop is aimed at depicting the efforts of the civil society in protecting the aree of Iasi and will discuss the importance the forests have in the life of the local citizens and the need to ensure the protection and conservation of the biodiversity while tackling climate change. \n  \nWORKSHOP II \nGreen Activism – From A to Z \nIon Holban – Activist\, Ambassador of Codrii  Iasilor & Ciprian Polenschis Activist\, Member of Codrii Iasilor \nIn this workshop\, participants will learn about practical tools and methods to engage in green activism\, from forestry management monitoring and petitioning to media relations. \n  \nWORKSHOP III \nRigas Tsiakiris – Forest Ecologist\,  Scientific Committee of the Green Institute Greece \nTeia Ciulacu – President\, Viitor Plus \nProductive reforestation for living rural landscapes  \nDuring this workshop\, participants will learn about selective management of forests in Greece and community afforestation projects in Romania. As described by Dirk Holemans\, co-President of the Green European Foundation and the book’s editor\, the just transition marks “the meeting of necessity and ethics“. \n  \nAbout the Competition\nEntries should engage with this collection\, referencing chapters and applying the concepts\, history and political analysis it develops to the political economy of the UK (a free e-book will be shared on request). While the proposed essay can be academic or persuasive in style\, it should be rigorous in its argumentation and references. It may make use of previously submitted (but unpublished) work. Entrants do not need to have\, or be in tertiary education\, and we welcome entries that can engage personally as well as conceptually with the subject (for example\, those written from the perspective of workers\, organisers and activists). \nThe winner’s essay will be published in print and promoted by the Green European Foundation and Green House ahead of the UK book launch event\, which the winner will be offered travel expenses to attend. The event will take place on 20th September at Bookmarks bookshop in Bloomsbury\, London\, chaired by former Green Party leader Natalie Bennett. \nEssays are encouraged to take a broad interpretation of the subject\, and to provide an overview across different themes\, which could include: \n\nJust transition in the context of the cost-of-living crisis\, rising labour agitation and lower growth futures (see for example this webinar)\, and how these factors could impact the political and policy landscape.\nThe electoral appeal of just transition-related policies and agendas (Green New Deal\, Green Industrial Revolution) with reference to recent UK national and regional elections.\nDevolved nation initiatives around the just transition\, referencing recent progress in Scotland\, Wales and Northern Ireland.\nThe role of ‘place-based just transitions’: local and democratic engagement in planning through e.g. Local Authorities and Citizens’ Assemblies (e.g. Bristol).\nCritical perspectives on the just transition\, for example on the strategic role of the labour movement in the ecological transition relative to youth (e.g.\nThe Hidden Pitfalls of the “Just Transition”). \n\nThe role of sectoral transition plans (e.g. energy\, manufacturing\, transport\, advertising) versus economy-wide planning and policies.\n\n\nInterested?\n\nContact info@greenhousethinktank.org to confirm your interest and eligibility\, and to receive the e-book of A European Just Transition for a Better World.\nPrepare a 300-word pitch on the political potential of the concept of a just transition in the UK. The pitch should make clear its interactions with the book and the proposed scope and style of the essay.\nProvide an example of previous writing– academic or otherwise – on a related topic (e.g. climate crisis\, labour movement\, political economy)\, around 1\,500-3\,000 words in length.\nSend your pitch and previous writing to info@greenhousethinktank.org by midnight on Sunday 24th July.\nThe winner will be notified by 28July and asked to submit a 2\,500-word essay by 21st August. SUMMARY:The Future of Eastern Europe Conference (Riga)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nWe are pleased to announce the Conference on the Future of Eastern Europe organized on 6-7 June in Riga\, Latvia. The conference will be organised by GEF with the support of Cooperation Development Networks Eastern Europe (CDNEE)\, Green Thought Association (Turkey)\, Sustainable Development Forum Green Window (Croatia)\, Green Institute (Greece) and Ecopolis Foundation (Hungary). The Conference aims to unite the voices of young green activists from Eastern Europe to talk about the future of the region\, and the challenges and opportunities for an ecological and progressive turnaround. \nContext\nThis is the first event as part of our 2022 Transnational Project The Future of Eastern Europe and Ecodemocracy. Democracy in Eastern Europe is hanging by a thread. Authoritarianism is growing and nationalist narratives are reopening old conflicts. The Pandemic has exposed governments’ inefficiencies to react to any sort of crisis and contributed to heighten polarisation in an already polarised society. On the other side\, hope is on the horizon as progressive movements are taking over power at the local level\, as well as at the rapidly growing mobilisation of public around environmental issues. How could we leverage these small steps and use them to strengthen the Green movement in the region? \n\nProgramme\n\nDAY 1 – (6th June) Monday\n10:00-10:15 Opening of the conference (Live Stream)\n\n\n\n\n10:15-12:00 Eastern Europe as a region – a story of turbulent transformation (Live Stream)\n\nDescription:  For more than thirty years Eastern Europe is a region of independent nation-states. During this period there was the promise that after a long struggle democracy and well-being would be achieved. Looking at it today\, it is clear that most Eastern European countries are far from democracy and the well-being of citizens.\nIn this session\, we will try to analyse and reflect on the last decades of Eastern Europe\, mainly focusing to find the roots of current problems and possible solutions by looking back at the recent history – what shaped the region\, how the democratisation and transition took place.\n\n\n\nSpeakers: \nSonja Schiffers\, Director of Heinrich-Boell Foundation\, South Caucasus Office\nAnastasiya Dorofeeva\, Belarusian Green party\, Belarusian anti-nuclear campaign\, hub “Green foundations”\n\n\n\nModerator: Luka Gudek\, Green European Foundation\n\n\n\n12:00-13:30 Influence of Global Powers: Eastern Europe at the crossroads between democracy and autocracy (Live Stream)\n\nDescription: Discussing political dynamics and transformation of Eastern Europe cannot take place without paying attention to global powers and their involvement in the region. \nWith this session we aim to map global powers: EU – China\, Russia and US – and their interests; What role do they play in supporting democracy and progressive agenda or the opposite – encouraging and financing anti-democratic\, right-wing and authoritarian forces. \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\nAnton Cherepenko\, the Free Hong Kong Center in Kyiv\nZarina Burkadze\,  Associate Proffessor of Political Science\, Ilia State University \nRaluca Besliu\, Fundraising Manager\, Green European Foundation and contributor of the Green European Journal focusing on Eastern European affairs\nTeo Comet\, TILT Coordinator at European Greens\, Board Member at Green European Foundation \n\n\n\n\nModerator: Giorgi Ptskialadze\, Network Coordinator of CDN\n\n\n\n15:30-17:00 War in Ukraine: Context\, Present and the Effect on the region (Live Stream) \n\nDescription: Russian aggression against Ukraine is continuing. Every day we are witnessing atrocities\, war crimes and violations of international law from the Russian side\, at the same time Ukraine is bravely defending its people\, sovereignty\, democracy and even Europe as a whole.\nIn this session\, we will take a look at a few different aspects of the conflict: the context of the war\, the historical roots of Russian aggression\, the current events\, as well as what greens should do to help Ukraine\, and how the ongoing war affects countries in the region.\n\n\n\nFacilitator: Katya Andrieieva\, Executive Committee Member of CDN\n\n\n\n17:30-19:00 Energy – a veto point and/or a chance for democracy? (Live Stream)\n\nDescription: The energy we choose reflects the systems we support. In this session\, we will discuss energy as the core factor for sustaining authoritarian regimes and the way the energy sector influences political dynamics. As well as we are going to focus on the possibility of democratisation through energy – decentralisation\, renewables and the prospect of energy cooperatives in Eastern Europe. \n\n\n\nSpeakers:\n\n\nManana Kochladze\, Bankwatch Strategic Area Leader – Democratization and Human Rights\n \nYevheniia Zasiadko\, Head of climate and transport department at Ecoaction – Centre for Environmental Initiatives\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWorkshop: Sandy-Kyriaki Fameliari\, ElectaEnergy Cooperative\n\n\n\n\nModerator: Lusine Kosakyn\, Executive Committee Member of CDN\n\n\n\n\nDAY 2 – (7th June) Tuesday\n\n\n10:00-11:30 Eco-Democracy as a new paradigm for Eastern Europe\n\nDescription: The Workshop aims to add a philosophical\, ethical and institutional dimension to the conversations on the Future of Eastern Europe happening at the Conference. It hopes to bring together the different voices and ideas from the wealth of participants and facilitate a meaningful discussion on how to put Ecology at the Centre of Democracy.\n\nHow can we make democracy more ecological? What kind of changes do we need to apply to our thinking about participation\, institutions and decision-making to put ecology and the environment at the forefront of our political systems? \n\nThese are some of the questions that we’ll be asking and trying to answer at our Ecodemocracy Workshop!                              \n\n\n\nFacilitators: Anna Maniadi and Dimitris Papageorgiou\, Green Institute Greece            \n\n\n\n12:00-13:30  Conflicts in Eastern Europe: the theory and beyond\n\nDescription: \nThe session aims to provide participants with the basis of conflict theory and conflict resolution and analyze the conflicts in EE through case studies.  The session encompasses theoretical and practical parts that will be conducted through non-formal education methods. The objectives of the session are 1)to understand the concept of conflict (origin\, causes\, consequences)\, 2) to discuss the mechanisms of handling conflict\, particularly\, conflict resolution\, and 3) to explore the conflicts that happened in EE in recent years\, their consequences and current state.\n\n\n\n15:30-17:00 Open Mic\n\n\n\n17:30-19:30 Movements into politics: Green Wave in Eastern Europe (Live Stream)\n\n\nDescription: For the last decades\, if you checked the electoral map of Europe intending to see how Green parties have been performing\, you would see a clear pattern: Greens in the west and north do well – they get elected in national and regional parliaments\, city councils\, win mayorships and even participate in governing coalitions; while in the east – you would see a grey colour representing either absence of Green parties from the political landscape or lack of support and therefore relevance. However\, in recent years the pattern is dissolving and becoming a blur\, the Green wave spreading to the East. \n\nDuring the panel\, we will discuss the ongoing Green wave with newly established Green political parties across Eastern Europe with the aim to analyse current success\, find the patterns and similarities\, understand the importance of grassroots movements and civil society\, map challenges\, envision the future and their influence on the political landscape.\n\n\n\nSpeakers:\nJustine Pantelejeva\, Progresīvie\, Latvia\nPredrag Momčilović\, Ne davimo Beograd\, Serbia\nSopo Shubitidze\, Mtsvaneebi\, Georgia\nMozemo Croatia TBC\nStefan Vukmanovic\, Ura Montenegro\nVesna TBC\nKoray Doğan Urbarlı\, Green Party Turkey\n\nPracticalities\nDate: 6-7th June \nTime Zone: Eastern European Summer Time (EEST) / Coordinated Universal\nTime (UTC) + 3 \nLocation: Rija VEF Hotel\, Brīvības 199c\, Riga\, Latvija\, LV-1039  \nFormat: Hybrid format (some sessions will be Livestreamed) \nLanguage: The main language of this activity will be English. But not being comfortable with interacting in English should not prevent you from applying. GEF & CDN strives to create an inclusive atmosphere at the events\, where participants are encouraged to express themselves and ask for clarifications or translations from peers that speak the same language. \nCosts: Anyone is welcome to take part in the conference with their own expenses. There is no participation fee. \nIn addition\, CDN can cover the participation of a limited number of applications of young greens and activists from Eastern Europe (with a maximum age of 30). Meaning the cost of travel\, and lodging (accommodation in multi-bed rooms\, vegetarian/vegan food and refreshments). \nIn any case\, take into consideration choosing the most economic and environmentally friendly means of travel (lowest price + travel time + CO2 emissions) and in case the trip would take less than 15 hours only travelling by land (train+bus) is reimbursed (IRPs §9.1). \nDeadline: 20th of May (if applying for CDN to cover your participation.)\n \nYou will be informed by e-mail approximately 1 week after the deadline. SUMMARY:Energy Sobriety: Holy Grail of the Green Transition?
DESCRIPTION:About the event:\nWelcome to the Collaborative University a platform that consists of several sessions revolving around a specific theme. The registered participants meet on a few Saturdays during the year to work on the given subject\, receive advice from experts in the field and visit relevant initiatives. The aim? To gain and exchange knowledge and to sharpen one’s critical mind… \nDesigned by our partner Etopia\, GEF is hosting the third and final session of this series on the notion of energy sobriety–seeking to identify the reasons for but also the obstacles to reduce energy consumption in our society. \nParticipants will work in plenary and smaller groups\, enjoying background reading and information\, a collaborative space and participative methodology\, and input from invited speakers and experts. Key insights from the day will be harvested in the form of podcast interviews and summary reflections for the general public. \nContext\nThis event is part of the GEF transnational project Climate Emergency Economy: Rethinking Demand. Building on several years of work exploring what it means to create an economy fit for the climate emergency\, GEF and its partners are this year focusing on the crucial question of how to reduce demand for energy and materials. With the support of Green House Think Tank\, Etopia\, and Green Foundation Ireland\, we will explore how to frame rethinking demand politically\, and articulate clear plans for demand reduction so green narratives are better grounded in reality and a shared vision of hope.  \nSpeakers\nMathilde Szuba – Political sociologist\, Sciences Po Lille\, Institut Momentum. \nLuc Semal – Political scientist\, Centre d’Écologie et des Sciences de la Conservation (CESCO)\, Institut Momentum. \nProgramme\nThe morning sessions will cover governance in the context of the end of energy abundance – possible consequences for institutions and potentially for the functioning of representative democracy as we know it. This is followed by lunch and group work in the afternoon.   \nPracticalities\nDate: June 4th (9:00 – 16:30)  \nLocation: Auberge de jeunesse Jacques Brel\, Rue de la Sablonnière 30\, Brussels  \nLanguage: French  \nRegistrations for the collaborative university are now closed. If you wish to learn more\, please email arnaud.deflorenne@etopia.be.   \n\nThis session of the Collaborative University is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Etopia and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

We will bring together Authors and speakers from the EU and the Balkans on this topic with their experiences and solutions to promote the importance of just transition. \nWe have to rethink production and consumption from the perspective of a social circular economy. Only if the transformation is executed in a just and fair way\, it will find enough support among the population. With this project\, we are researching the different dimensions of Just Transition and what are the politics and policies we should develop to change our economic realities. \nContext\nThis event is part of the Green European Foundation’s Just Transition transnational project. The project looks into the question of transforming from an extractive to a regenerative economy in a just and equitable way to find the necessary support among the population. It seeks to show that the green family\, including GEF in its specific role\, is a leading actor in the development of future-proof politics and policies\, developed in a sensitive way that keeps in mind local specificities. \nThis and more will be discussed this evening. \nSpeakers\n\nVedran Horvat\, executive director of the Institute of Political Ecology (Croatia(ç) and co-author of the book.\nAleksandar Gjorgjievski\, ASSED Sunrise (North Macedonia) and co-author of the book.\nŽaklina Živković\, Polekol & Right to Water Initiative (Serbia)\nStefan Boužarovski\, Professor of Geography at the University of Manchester (United Kingdom)\n\nPracticalities\nWhen: 27th May 2022\, 19:00h – 20:30h CEST \nWhere: Javna Soba\, Skopje\, North Macedonia \nFormat: In person \nLanguage: The main language of this event will be in Macedonian with English interpretation \nRegistrations: If you’d like to attend please get in touch with adrian.toth@gef.eu for more information \n  \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Sunrise and with the financial support of the European parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:City and countryside: so close\, so far
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nWith around 55% of the world’s population living in urban areas (over 75% in Europe)\, building resilient cities has become a challenge. But to successfully meet this challenge\, we cannot focus only on urban areas. The strategies put in place must consider the territory they are part of and their dependence on the resources of rural areas. Establishing a balanced relationship with its rural environment will bring mutual benefits\, as well as giving greater autonomy and independence to the city itself in obtaining the basic resources it needs. \nBased on this premise\, how should we manage food\, water or energy to make our cities and territories more resilient? We will talk about this in this session organised by the Green European Foundation (GEF) with the support of the Transición Verde Foundation. \nSpeakers\n\nMarta Olazabal is the head of the Adaptation research group at the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3). She has participated in the drafting of the IPCC 2022 report\, in chapter 6 on Urban Areas.\nJorge Molero is a consultant and project technician at the Entretantos Foundation and is in charge of the technical secretariat of the Network of Municipalities for Agroecology.\nFrancesc La Roca is a founding member of Fundación Nueva Cultura del Agua (New Water Culture Foundation) and professor in the Department of Applied Economics at the University of Valencia.\nIsmael Morales is the head of communications at the Fundación Renovables (Renewables Foundation) and a contributor on energy issues to the newspaper El Confidencial.\n\nModerator: Lidia Ucher\, journalist specialising in communication for social and climate justice. \nPracticalities\nWhen: 26th May\, 18:00-19:30 PM CEST \nWhere: The event is online on Zoom\, open and free of charge. \nLanguage: The main language of this activity will be in Spanish. SUMMARY:'A European Just Transition for a Better World' Book presentation (Brussels)
DESCRIPTION:Context\nThis event is organized by the Green European Foundation with the support of Oikos Think Tank and Member of European Parliament Sara Matthieu\, to present the book on Just Transition\, published within the GEF project Just Transition. \nThis transnational project tackles the question of a Just Transition – transforming from an extractive to a regenerative economy in a just and equitable way to find the necessary support among the population. It seeks to show that the green family\, including GEF in its specific role\, is a leading actor in the development of futureproof politics and policies\, developed in a sensitive way that keeps in mind local specificities. \nAbout the event \nAs we argue in this book\, a just transition requires a new social contract. A new contract for Europe – this time a social–ecological contract – can only be written from a global perspective\, taking into account human rights and respect for nature worldwide. At the same time\, this major transformation will need to be very context specific. The differences between European regions are enormous\, not least in terms of income disparity between and within countries. So\, too\, are the financial\, innovative and structural capacities to shape and implement the transformative changes that are needed. From these perspectives\, we critically appreciate the European Commission’s Green Deal. \nThis and more will be discussed this evening. \nSpeakers\n\nSara Matthieu\, Member of European Parliament (Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance)\nDirk Holemans\, coordinator of Think Tank Oikos & Co-President of GEF\nJoaquin Nieto\, Former Director of the ILO Office for Spain\nAnne Chapman\, Green House Think Tank\nPhilippe Pochet\, General Director of the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI)\nModerator: Annabelle Van Nieuwenhuyse\n\nPracticalities:\nDate: 11th May \nTime: Doors open at 19:45h \nEvent starts at 20:00h and event ends at 21:30h\, including a drink \nLocation: Zilverenzaal/Foyer en dakterras\, Beursschouwburg Brussels (20 – 28 Rue Auguste Orts\, 1000 Brussels). \nRegistrations: Registrations are open << \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Oikos think tank and Member of the European Parliament Sara Matthieu and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. SUMMARY:Green-Red Dialogues: Ukraine and Europe’s New Role in the World
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nThe devastating war in Ukraine is a humanitarian disaster\, with horrific consequences for the country’s inhabitants and more lives lost every day. Europe has taken a leading role in the international response\, not just because of proximity and the direct consequences that this unprecedented conflict is having for the continent\, but also because it marks an undeniable turning point that demands a joint and transversal response. \nThis crisis\, however\, will require not just short-term\, but also mid-to-long term action\, and a shift in how Europe positions itself in various domains. There are economic\, energy\, geopolitical and other implications\, and important choices to be made. Faced with all this\, we need to create room for debate where we can bring green and left-wing perspectives to the questions and consequences we will have to face. \nAnna Lührmann and Ernest Urtasun will try to give us answers from this perspective\, a European vision that will draw different perspectives from both Germany and southern Europe. \nContext\nGEF’s Green Red Dialogues\, organised with the support of Fundació Nous Horitzons\, aim to tackle pressing issues of our time and the challenges Europe faces with an explicit social and green lens. In doing so\, these debates connect the red and the green and highlight Southern European perspectives on crucial topics like energy\, mobility\, and security in the 21st century. \nSpeakers\n\nAnna Lührmann – Minister of State for Europe and Climate of the German government \nErnest Urtasun – Member of the European Parliament\, Greens/EFA \n\nPracticalities\nDate and Time: Monday\, April 25th (18:00 – 19:00 CEST)  \nLocation: Online\, via Zoom  \nLanguage: English and Catalan\, with simultaneous translation  \nRegistration: Please sign-up in advance via this link.   \nFurther Reading\nSince the war in Ukraine began\, our independent publication\, the Green European Journal has been publishing articles and interviews to look into the regional context and impacts\, the role of media and civil society\, and the energy and environmental dimension\, as well as its implications for the future of the European Union. Here’s what the Journal has published so far. \n\nThis webinar is organised by the Green European Foundation\, with the support of Fundacio Nous Horitzons and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Just Transition in the Western Balkans
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nWhile the EU has tried to extend some of its climate objectives to candidate countries via the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans\, civil society and other actors have raised questions as to what extent it meets the needs and will bring clear\, transparent\, and sustainable change to the region. Renewed efforts and public debate are crucial to drive the transition to a sustainable and carbon-neutral wellbeing economy that works for the people of the Western Balkans.    \nIn this webinar\, we will explore the transition to an economy of the future by bringing together experts on the topic who will share their experiences and solutions to promote a just transition in the Western Balkan region. We have to rethink production and consumption from the perspective of a social circular economy. Only when the transformation is planned and executed in a just and equitable way\, will it find the necessary support in short time among the population. Through this project\, we are researching the different dimensions of a Just Transition and the politics and policies we should develop nationally and regionally to make the change in our economic realities.   \n\nContext\nThis seminar is part of the Green European Foundation’s Just Transition transnational project. The project looks into the question of transforming from an extractive to a regenerative economy in a just and equitable way to find the necessary support among the population. It seeks to show that the green movement\, including GEF in its specific role\, is a leading actor in the development of future-proof politics and policies\, developed in a sensitive way that keeps in mind local specificities.  \n\nSpeakers\n\nDragan Minovski – Professor at the Electro Technical Faculty of Shtip \nSonja Risteska – Project Manager Southeast Europe at Agora Energiewende \nAleksandar Gjorgjievski – National Project Coordinator for GEF Just Transition project (ASSED Sunrise) \n\nModerated by: Hristijan Stanoevikj \n\nProgramme\n10:55-11:00  Participants join the call  \n11:00-11:10  Introduction  \n11:10-11:50  Speaker presentations: exploring Just Transition  \n *announcement of the upcoming GEF  book ”A European Just Transition for a Better World”  (May\, 2022)  \n11:50-12:10  Panel discussion and Q&A  \n\nPracticalities\nDate and Time: Saturday\, March 26th (11:00 – 12:00)  \nLanguage: Macedonian  \nRegistration: This event will be taking place online. SUMMARY:Hydrogen and the Green Transition
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nGreen hydrogen is produced from water and renewable energy. It can be used as an energy carrier and as a raw material\, replacing fossil fuels. But its production requires a lot of green electricity\, and green hydrogen will remain scarce well into the next decade.   \nThis webinar will run through oft-proposed solutions for green hydrogen scarcity\, including the risks they carry and criteria that should be considered. These potential options include the production of blue hydrogen\, prioritisation via a hydrogen ladder\, and importing hydrogen from countries with sun\, wind\, and physical space to produce renewable energy.   \nWe will also discuss broader questions around the role of hydrogen in the green transition.  Does ditching Russian gas require a revision of the hydrogen strategy\, with even less of a role for blue hydrogen? Which industries have a future in a sustainable Netherlands and how big is their demand for hydrogen? What infrastructure is needed to transport hydrogen and its derivatives? How will the costs of scaling up hydrogen production be divided between government and industry?  \n  \nContext\nThis webinar is part of the project Climate Emergency Economy – organised by GEF with the support of Green House Think Tank\, Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks\, and Green Foundation Ireland. The project explores what an economy fit for the climate emergency looks like\, focusing particularly on the policies required in ‘hard-to-reach’ sectors for Europe to reach zero carbon.   \nThe webinar will begin with an overview of key project findings and proposals. This will be followed by political reactions from the MEPs and MPs\, and then room for questions and discussions between all of the participants.   \n  \nSpeakers\n\nBas Eickhout (MEP\, Greens/EFA) \nSuzanne Kröger (MP\, GroenLinks) \nMohammed Chahim (MEP\, S&D) \nJoris Thijssen (MP\, PvdA) \nEvert Nieuwenhuis and Richard Wouters (Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks) \n Paul Apeldoorn (PvdA Duurzaam) \nNienke Homan (Sustainable Hydrogen Club)\nTitia van Leeuwen (Milieunetwerk GroenLinks) – Chair \n\n\nProgramme\n10:00 – Opening by Titia van Leeuwen\n10:05 – Presentation: hydrogen in a European perspectives\, followed by Q&A\n10:30 – Presentation: role of the Netherlands in the hydrogen economy\, followed by Q&A\n10:45 – Political responses\n11:15 – Expert responses\n11:30 –  Discussion with politicians and participants\n11:55 – Closing remarks \n\nPracticalities\nDate and time: 18 March\, 10:00 – 12:00 CET  \nLocation: Online\, via Zoom  \nLanguage: Dutch  \nRegistration: via this link  \n\nDiving in:\nDive into this topic and prepare for the webinar by checking out some of our work on this topic:  \nGreen European Journal article: The Limits of Europe’s Corporate-Led Hydrogen Project  \nProject Publication: Greening Hydrogen – Big issues around a small molecule  \n  \n  \n  \nSummary Video: Greening Hydrogen  \n\n  \n\nThis webinar is organised by the Green European Foundation\, with the support of Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Reporting for a Green and Feminist Europe
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nDebates and decision-making around the climate crisis too often revolve around the voices and experiences of a limited few\, depriving us of crucial perspectives in national and European conversations. Moreover\, we know that the effects of the climate crisis have a disproportionate impact on specific demographics\, such as women and  rural communities.   \nThis training will provide selected young Green feminists with skills and knowledge on fair and ethical reporting\, writing\, and research; as well as fostering creativity\, empathising and recognising the intersections of gender and climate. Aimed at participants in Central and Eastern Europe\, the training will also tackle press freedom more broadly\, exploring some hot topics and discussing what the EU can\, does\, and should do to in this domain.   \nParticipants will use the skills and knowledge they have acquired to go back to their home countries and crease inspiring\, professional content which will reflect stories of those who are often forgotten about in discussions of climate change.  \nContext:\nThis training is part of Feminists in the Environmental Movement\, a GEF transnational project that seeks to stimulate conversations around (the intersections of) gender and environmental justice across Europe. The project is implemented with the support of Visio (Finland)\, Green Economics Institute (UK)\, Oikos (Belgium)\, Strefa Zieleni (Poland)\, Green Thought Association (Turkey)\, and CDNEE.   \nProgramme\nFull programme to be announced shortly!  \nPracticalities\nWhen? March 7th\, 2022 (12:00 – 20:00 GET)  \nWhere? Tbilisi\, Georgia  \nWho? This is a closed training session for already selected participants. The represented countries are: Croatia\, Belarus/Latvia\, Bosnia and Herzegovina\, Czech Republic\, Serbia\, Turkey\, and Russia.  \n  \n\n  \nThis training day is organised by the Green European Foundation\, with the support of Cooperation and Development Network Eastern Europe (CDNEE) and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:The Potential of Railways
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nThe event is open to all those interested in mobility\, especially members of organisations and platforms working on the issue\, government officials\, politicians and civil society associations. \nOur aim is to publicise more sustainable alternatives when choosing a means of transport and to raise awareness of the need to change our mobility habits. \nThe events will be held via zoom and will have simultaneous translation from Spanish-English. Prior registration is required. \n\n\n\nContext\nThis is the third event of the series of conferences entitled “The Future of European Mobility” \nOne of the key factors in the economic development in our global society has been the ease of mobility for people and goods due to the abundance of cheap oil. But we can already witness the consequences of this irrational mobility in the form of the climate crisis and air pollution. \nIn order to achieve Europe’s decarbonisation goals\, the transport sector is a priority. That is why the German Heinrich Böll Foundation launched last year the European Mobility Atlas\, a comprehensive analysis of the situation of the sector in Europe. The Green European Foundation and the Fundació Nous Horitzons have translated the Atlas into Spanish and\, together with Transición Verde\, have prepared a specific annex on the situation in Spain. For its launch\, we have organised three online events on some modes of transport whose future is key to move towards low-emission mobility. \nThe last session of the series will focus on the railway. The most efficient means of motorised transport which\, beyond the AVE (high-speed rail line)\, has been losing its condition as the backbone of the Spanish geography. Should it recover that condition? Can a large part of freight be transferred to the railway? \nSpeakers\n\nJuantxo López de Uralde\, national Deputy and president of the Commission for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge of the Spanish Congress.\nJosé Luis Ordóñez\, spokesperson of the State Coordination for a Public\, Social and Sustainable Train.\nTilly Metz\, MEP in the Greens/EFA group and member of the Committee on Transport and Tourism.\nManel Ferri \, Spanish Sustainable Mobility Foundation)\n\nModeration: Lidia Ucher\, environmental journalist. \n\n\n\nPracticalities\nDate ant Time: 8th February 18:00-19:30 \nLanguage: The events will be held in Spanish via zoom\, and will have simultaneous translation in English. \nRegistration: Prior registration is required- Please register here. \nThe day before each session we will send a message to the registered persons with the access link. \nThe sessions will be recorded and made available on YouTube. \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Transición Verde and Fundació Nous Horitzons\, and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.
