SUMMARY:Europe On the Move: Shaping the Future of Sustainable Mobility in the Iberian Peninsula
DESCRIPTION:About\nIn the face of multiple crises – climate and energy\, geopolitical\, cost-of-living – the challenges and opportunities for sustainable mobility are complex and evolving. What implications do these challenges hold for the specific contexts of Portugal and Spain\, within the wider context of the European Green Deal? SUMMARY:Far from the Center: Mobility in the Ultra-Periphery (Ponta Delgada)
DESCRIPTION:About\nMobility plays a crucial role in shaping the quality of people’s lives by influencing multiple aspects. To name a few examples\, it determines which jobs people can apply to\, how often they can see relatives and friends\, and the amount of free time they have. It can also amplify prejudice and inequality\, namely those regarding gender\, race and others. The way people move has a huge impact on the environment that should always be taken into consideration. \nWith both wonderful but challenging geography\, the Azores is a good place to discuss these problems as there is much work to be done towards sustainable mobility that works for all. Far from mainland Portugal\, travelling to or from Azores is not affordable to everyone’s pockets; there are inequalities between the islands in the archipelago\, with some having much better connections than others. In this debate\, we seek to address the pressing issues connected to mobility in the ultra-periphery with multiple analytical and geographical lenses. We will bring together diverse perspectives to analyse the challenges and opportunities for mobility on island and in ultra-peripheral contexts\, the impacts of tourism on mobility and how mobility is also a gender issue. Besides the Azorean perspective\, we welcome an international panel with insights from Greece\, Croatia and Spain. \n  \nProject background\nThis event is part of “Europe On the Move: Shaping the Future of Sustainable Mobility in the Iberian Peninsula”\, which aims to nurture the debate in Portugal and Spain around the future of mobility and the Green Deal\, with a particular eye for the challenges and opportunities for sustainable mobility and how they relate to Iberian realities. \n  \nSpeakers\no            Filipe Roque (moderator) – Councillor of Ponta Delgada\, Portugal \no            Henar Martín – Consultant of Sustainable Mobility in Canarias\, Spain \no            Nikolina Rajkovic – Institute for Political Ecology\, Croatia \no            Rosa Simas – Universidade dos Açores e Universidade Nova de Lisboa\, Portugal \no            Theocharis Tsoutsos – Technical University of Crete\, Greece \n  \nProgramme\n\nIntroduction and presentation of the speakers\n\nFilipe Roque (moderator) – Councillor of Ponta Delgada\, Portugal \n\nMobility on the island: the Azorean case\n\nNikolina Rajkovic – Institute for Political Ecology\, Croatia \n\nThe impact of tourism on mobility\n\nTheocharis Tsoutsos – Technical University of Crete\, Greece \n\nSustainable mobility in and between islands\n\nRosa Simas – Universidade dos Açores e Universidade Nova de Lisboa\, Portugal \n\nA gender perspective on mobility in Azores and its links with sustainability\n\nHenar Martín – Consultant of Sustainable Mobility in Canarias\, Spain \n\nMobility in the ultra-periphery\, the example of Canarias and connection with sustainable mobility\nModerated discussion followed by Q&A\n\n  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 25th November\, 15:30pm-17:30pm GMT-1 \nLocation: Anfiteatro VIII\, Universidade dos Açores and Online (streamed on GEF Youtube). \nLanguage:  The main languages of the event will be Portuguese and English\, with simultaneous interpretation provided EN<>PT. \nRegistration: This is public event; no prior registration is required. \nSocial media event page: Longe do Centro: Mobilidade na Ultraperiferia | Facebook \nRecommended reading: European Mobility Atlas \n  \n  \n  \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation and Heinrich Böll Stiftung EU with the support of Instituto José Tengarrinha and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation

SUMMARY:Beyond Electrification: Social and Geopolitical Costs of Lithium
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThe growing demand for electrification does not come without its own costs. Environmental\, social and ethical considerations arise when taking into account the impact on local communities. To obtain the necessary resources\, huge extractivist industries threaten to devastate entire regions. How can we resist them? Furthermore\, electrification also poses some serious global issues. Can we move beyond our outdated electricity and mobility model without compromising social justice and the exploitation of the Global South? \nThis session will bring together voices and expertise from politics and civil society to expose the flaws and limitations of the current model of electrification at local\, national and European levels. The aim of the event is to create a dynamic space for debate where we can explore ways to ensure a more sustainable and socially just electrified future. \n  \nProject background\nThis event is part of a series of debates entitled “Europe on the Move: Shaping the Future of Sustainable Mobility in the Iberian Peninsula” organised by the Green European Foundation and Heinrich Böll Stiftung EU with the support of Transición Verde\, Instituto José Tengarrinha\, Fundació Nous Horitzons\, EcoPolítica and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. \nThis series of debates aims to foster debate in Portugal and Spain around the future of mobility\, bringing together relevant stakeholders from civil society\, academia and politics to analyse and explore challenges and opportunities for the future of mobility and the Green Deal in Europe. \n  \nSpeakers\n\nCatalina Abell (moderator)\, EcoPolitica\, expert in political communication and political processes.\nFlorent Marcellesi\, former-MEP. SUMMARY:Citizens Assemblies in Action (Skopje)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nBoth the climate and energy crises are at their peak across Europe and very often policymakers are required to make quick and short-notice decisions based on the executive power they gained through elections. In many cases the voices and needs of citizens are not properly represented and recognized as it appears that crisis mode does not allow sufficient time nor resources to allow a deeper democratic process. \nCitizen’s assemblies have the potential to empower citizens to engage in a diverse of topics (climate\, energy\, water\, biodiversity\, health)\, but also to strengthening linkages between the Greens across Europe and engaged citizens\, with the purpose of making them more relevant\, inclusive and connected with social groups and movements. \nGuests and experts from academic and practical backgrounds will share their expertise with the participants and enable an exchange of ideas and concepts. \n  \nProject background\nThis event is part of the Green European Foundation’s project Green deal for All – Citizens Assemblies in Action. The emergence of assemblies across Europe is a symptom which shows that citizens don’t feel sufficiently involved in policy making or decision-making processes that relate to the green transition. Citizen assemblies emerge as a form of civic deliberation to underline the societal dimension of the green transition policies present in the European Green Deal\, to reflect the full spectrum of society and very often to boost local or national decision makers who often don’t have sufficient legitimacy to take more ambitious\, bolder actions. \nThis project aims to increase the knowledge on the work of citizen assemblies\, their methodologies\, successes and failures\, but also to work proactively with them or create the supportive conditions for the emergence of new ones. Not only with the purpose of building public ownership over tough choices to be taken\, but also to democratize climate action across Europe. \n  \nSpeakers\nEwa Sufin Jaquemart\, Strefa Zieleni\, Poland and Board member of GEF \nHristijan Stanoevikj – SUNRISE Association \nVedran Horvat – IPE Croatia – Board member of GEF and Leading partner of GEF project “Citizen’s Assemblies in Action” \nModerator Nevena Georgievska\, O2 Initiative and Independents for Karposh \nProgramme\n13:00-14:00 Registrations and welcome coffee \n14:00-14:20 Introduction of participants \n14:20-14:40 Introduction of Green European Foundation – Ewa Sufin Jaquemart\, Strefa Zieleni\, Poland and Board member of GEF \n14:40-15:10 Introduction to Citizens assemblies – Regional and European experiences\, Hristijan Stanoevikj – SUNRISE Association \n15:10-15:45 Vedran Horvat – IPE Croatia – Board member of GEF and Leading partner of GEF project “Citizen’s Assemblies in Action” \n15:45-16:00 Coffee Break \n16:00-18:00 Networking opportunities in green activism (Informal round table) – Moderator Nevena Georgievska Grad. SUMMARY:Green deal and Beyond II (Skopje)
DESCRIPTION:About the event:\nIn the face of multiple crises – geopolitical\, climate and energy\, but also the very erosion of Europe’s social fabric by its outdated economic model – what should the Greens bring to the table to ensure that the European Green Deal (EGD) switches to the next gear into a social EGD or EGD 2.0? This session will bring together voices and expertise from politics and civil society to lay bare the flaws and limitations of the current Green Deal and propose the pathways we need to explore to make a Green Deal worthy of its name. \nThe Green Deal is a comprehensive progressive plan to combat the climate disaster while eliminating socio-economic inequalities in the country. The plan is a strategic framework for collective action towards transforming the functioning of the economic and energy system by creating thousands of low-carbon jobs for a better life for all living beings in harmony with nature. The same principles that will apply to EU member states by European Green Deal are mirrored in the region by the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans. \nIn the Green Agenda document regarding the circular economy\, the countries of the Western Balkans will strive to contribute to the protection of the environment and the minimization of the amount of waste generated in the region\, while with a large set of activities to be committed to the depollution of the air\, water and soil. \nIn proposing this project as a transnational project\, we see a huge importance not only in empowering citizens to engage with topics of our interest (climate\, energy\, water\, biodiversity\, health)\, but also in strengthening linkages between the Greens across Europe and engaged citizens\, with the purpose of making them more relevant\, inclusive and connected with social groups and movements. \nGuests and experts from academic and practical backgrounds will share their expertise with the participants and enable an exchange of ideas and concepts. \nOn this event we will discuss with experts\, institutions\, NGOs and activists on the perspectives of the Green Agenda for the WB. \n  \nProject background\nThis event is part of the Green European Foundation’s project Green deal and Beyond. The first focus of this project is based on proposals of the green family to integrate ambitiously the social dimension\, so to work on a ‘Just Green Deal’. The second level will ‘Go Beyond’ the Green Deal and mobilize future-oriented concepts such as Sustainable Welfare\, related to an Ecological Welfare State and the operational concept of Universal Public Services. \n  \nSpeakers\n\nEwa Sufin Jaquemart\, Strefa Zieleni\, Poland and Board member of GEF\nVanja Djinlev\, Scientific assistant and researcher\, Transdisciplinary Lab (TdLab)\, ETH Zurich\, Switzerland\nZekija Memedova Hristova – speaker and researcher – Association SUNRISE\n\n  \nProgramme \n10:00-12:00 Introduction to GEF projects and research – Ewa Sufin Jaquemart\, Strefa Zieleni\, Poland and Board member of GEF \n10:00-12:00 Green European Deal and Transition of the Energy Sector – Vanja Djinlev\, Scientific assistant and researcher\, Transdisciplinary Lab (TdLab)\, ETH Zurich\, Switzerland \n12:00-12:30 Coffee Break \n12:30-13:30 European Green Deal and Energy Democracy – Zekija Memedova Hristova \n13:30-14:00 Summarizing and conclusions \n14:00-15:00 Lunch and departure \nWorking language: Macedonian\, English \n  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 3rd December\, 10am-15:00pm CET \nLocation: Skopje \nLanguage:  The main language of the event will be Macedonian \nPlease note this is a closed-doors event. \n  \n\nThis event is organized by the Green European Foundation with the support of Sunrise and with the financial support of the European parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:The metallic core of the energy transition (Porto)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThe ecological crisis needs urgent action which brings along its own challenges. One of these challenges is the increasing use of certain materials within the context of the energy transition\, resulting from the need to substitute old technologies with new ones. The shift to such materials increases the demand for metals which are particularly necessary for electricity storage and conductivity.  \nHowever\, mining activities have serious impacts on the environment and local populations. Therefore\, there is a tension that arises between the energy transition and the increasing demand for metals. How can we minimize the demand for metals? How should mining activities be regulated and where should they occur? How can the energy transition be fair?  \nIn this debate we will address these questions and look for possible solutions to make the energy transition fair. Join us!   \nProject background\nThis event is part of “Europe on the Move: Shaping the Future of Sustainable Mobility in the Iberian Peninsula” event series\, which aim to nurture the debate in Portugal and Spain around the future of mobility and the Green Deal\, with a particular eye for the challenges and opportunities for sustainable mobility and how they relate to Iberian realities.  \nSpeakers:\n\nAna Rita Antunes\, Coopérnico \nArtur Patuleia\, E3G \nDiego Marín\, European Environmental Bureau  \n\nPracticalities \nDate and Time: 4th December\, 6:30pm-7:45pm GMT  \nLocation: Avenida Fernão de Magalhães 1147\, Porto   \nLanguage:  The main language of the event will be English.    \nOther useful info: In-person event with further publication of the recording online.  \nRecommended readings\nMetals for a Green and Digital Europe- An Agenda for Action (available in multiple languages\, namely Portuguese)  \nEuropean Mobility Atlas   \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation and Heinrich Böll Stiftung EU with the support of Instituto José Tengarrinha and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Geopolitics of Degrowth in a Conflicted Europe - Global South’s Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nGreen policies that respect planetary boundaries and allow the Global South to develop seem incompatible with unlimited economic growth within the EU. We need a realistic scenario for a future in which we consume more sparingly but live better together.  \nCould a post-growth EU that considerably reduces its ecological footprint with the purpose of freeing up natural resources find partners in the Global South? What should these partnerships entail? \nTo tackle this issue\, the Green European Foundation with the support of BlueLink is organising a webinar focusing on the Global South. Participants will have the opportunity to review and reflect upon the outcomes from expert meetings\, research and interviews\, held across Europe during 2023.  \nWe invite researchers\, activists and policy makers – particularly from the Global South  – with an interest in green policies and geopolitics to present perspectives\, experiences\, analytical or activity reports and to engage in a discussion around the following questions: \n\nHow would it be possible to optimize the possibilities that degrowth offers\, including for democratic flourishing and a safer Europe and world?\nCould a post-growth EU considerably reduce its environmental footprint with the express purpose of freeing up natural resources for the Global South?\nCan the EU hope for strategic partnerships with (democratic) Global South countries\, which are vital for greater security and legitimacy?\nCould a post-growth EU still make a larger contribution to poverty reduction\, global public goods\, tax justice\, legal migration routes\, international climate finance\, and compensation for climate loss and damage?\nCould the older EU members come to terms with their colonial pasts\, and on what conditions? How important is this for the Global South?\nWill exports from Global South suffer if a post-growth EU  reduces its overconsumption of global resources?\nHow much EU’s partnership with the Global South depend on technology transfer?\nWhat role of technology beyond trade\, development\, and climate: is it intertwined with geopolitics?\n\nNot every question has a definitive answer and we promote creativity\, analytical thinking\, and a fresh approaches to the challenge. \n  \nProject Background\nThis event is part of GEF’s project Geopolitics of a Post-Growth Europe\, which explores the tensions between degrowth/post-growth and geopolitics. The project aims to ignite a conversation between critics of economic growth and progressive thinkers on foreign and security policy\, who now often operate in separate circuits. It aims to find solutions beyond naïve anti-militarism and convenient belief in green growth. Find out more about the project and its findings at geopoliticspostgrowth.eu. \n  \nPracticalities\nThis GEF e-workshop will be held in Zoom by BlueLInk..  \nDate and time: December 11\, 2023 (14:00 UCT / 15:00 CET / 16:00 EET)  \nLanguage: English  \nRegistration: Open to all interested participants\, but please register in advance via this link. Please use the ‘Questions and Comments’ field to specify your scope of interest or proposed intervention. You will receive a confirmation email after registration.  \n  \n\nThis event is organized by the Green European Foundation with the support of BlueLink. It will take place online\, in partnership with the Association for Progressive Commnunications and its members.

SUMMARY:Moving to the Future: Reimagining Urban Mobility (Lisbon)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThe present ecological crisis impels us to seek a change in the way we move\, leading to increased efforts towards the decarbonisation of mobility. A mix of new and old solutions are key to change the urban mobility panorama\, namely the electrification and the expansion of public transportation networks\, and the creation of walking or cycling infrastructure to make active mobility attractive and pleasant. This change can also be seen as an opportunity to improve people’s lives by decreasing commuting time\, improving the air quality\, reducing noise\, and promoting an active lifestyle.  \nIn a simple sentence\, there is a need to shift the cities’ focus from cars to people. To achieve this\, a new mindset that prioritises public transportation is needed\, or “the social ideology of the motorcar”\, as the philosopher André Gorz named it back in 1973.  \nSustainable mobility must not only encompass ecological considerations\, but also needs to include an intersectional approach which takes gender and accessibility dimensions into account. As such\, we will also speak about gender and accessibility\, and dive into how to make daily commuting in metropolitan areas more sustainable\, accessible\, and inclusive.  \nProject background\nThis event is part of “Europe on the Move: Shaping the Future of Sustainable Mobility in the Iberian Peninsula” event series\, which aims to nurture the debate in Portugal and Spain around the future of mobility and the Green Deal\, with a particular eye for the challenges and opportunities for sustainable mobility and how they relate to Iberian realities.   \nSpeakers\n\nManuel Banza\, EMEL \nCarla Castelo\, Local Councillor at Oeiras \nRosa Félix\, Instituto Superior Técnico \nPhilipp Cerny\, Chief Executive Editor of the European Mobility Atlas \nMore to be announced \n\nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 12th December\, 6:30pm-8:30pm GMT  \nLocation: Sala do Conselho\, UACS\, Rua Castilho 14\, Lisboa  \nLanguage: The main languages of the event will be Portuguese and English\, with simultaneous interpretation provided EN<>PT.    \nRegistration: N/A  \nOther useful info: A recording will be uploaded to the GEF Youtube channel following the event.  \nRecommended reading: \n\nEuropean Mobility Atlas \nMetals for a Green and Digital Europe – An Agenda for Action \n\n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation and Heinrich Böll Stiftung EU with the support of Instituto José Tengarrinha and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:The Challenges of Metropolitan Sustainable Mobility
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nSustainable mobility is a particular priority in metropolitan areas because of its impact on air quality\, on the daily lives of millions of people and economic actors\, and as an instrument of territorial cohesion. Public transport\, cycling and walking are at the heart of a model that guarantees the right to sustainable mobility. \nThe Barcelona metropolitan area\, with its population exceeding 3.5 million inhabitants\, is a paradigmatic case in this debate\, as it is an area that risks being sanctioned by the EU due to its poor air quality. \nWithin this context\, what are the examples of good and bad practices of mobility? What are the challenges that lie ahead? Can we find successful sustainable urban mobility practices in other European cities? \nThese questions and possible answers will be the subject of this dynamic debate\, bringing together diverse experts\, academics\, and local government actors. \n  \nSpeakers\n\nGuille Lopez\, Barcelona City Councillor and Promoter of the Eixample Breathe platform\nCarme Miralles\, Professor of Urban Geography at the UAB\nLaura Campos\, Montcada I Reixac City Councillor\nZeeger Ernsting\, Amsterdam City Councillor\n\n  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 14th December\, 6:30pm CET \nLocation: Ateneu Barcelones\, Carrer Canuda\, 6 \nRegistration: Prior registration is required – please register here. \nLanguage:  Catalan with English simultaneous translation \nRecommended reading: European Mobility Atlas \n  \n\nThis event is organized by the Green European Foundation and Heinrich Böll Stiftung EU with the support of Fundació Nous Horitzons and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Green Perspectives on European Peace and Security
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nAs part of this webinar\, we will analyse various Green perspectives on peace and security currently present at the European level. The webinar is mainly but not only based on a mapping of green policy stances that GEF and its partners are conducting with the support of the think tank GRIP. \nTogether with the panellists\, we will discuss different perspectives present at the regional level\, with a particular focus on prevailing views in Serbia\, Bosnia and Herzegovina\, and Croatia. We will consider how the history and experiences of this region should feed into any green conception of peace and security\, today and in the future. \n  \nProject background\nThis event is a part of Green European Foundation’s Green Visions on European Security project\, which aims to explore how the Greens could adopt the necessary tools to understand contemporary conflicts and develop mechanisms to anticipate\, avoid\, respond to\, and terminate them. By facilitating a frank discussion on key tension points and vacuums\, across historical\, geographical\, and national sensitivities\, and with political ecology values at its core\, GEF and its partners contribute to the green movement’s reflections and anchoring of an updated vision on security and defence.  \n  \nSpeakers\nSenada Šelo-Šabić – Institute for Development and International Relations\nBranka Vierda – Youth Initiative for Human Rights Croatia\nVelma Šarić – Post-Conflict Research Center\nMatija Šaljić – Green Youth of Serbia  \n  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: December 18 2023\, 5pm-6:30pm CET \nLocation: Zoom – the event will be streamed on Facebook and the recording will later be available on YouTube \nLanguage:  The main languages of the event will be Croatian\, Bosnian and Serbian \nRegistration: Please register in advance here \n   \n\nThis conference  is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of  Forum Green Window and the financial support of the European parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Post-Growth Geopolitics: Europe at a Crossroads
DESCRIPTION:  \nAbout the event\nOur current socio-economic model is leading us to a dead end\, that’s widely recognised.  However\, concerns abound that a Europe prioritising the abandonment of GDP growth as a policy goal may face potential disadvantages on the complex geopolitical chessboard. \nFor the past year\, GEF – with the support of its partners – has been exploring the possible geopolitical consequences of a post-growth Europe. This launch event will highlight the importance of this topic\, delve into some of our main findings and recommendations\, and spotlight the Spanish translation of the resulting report. With our panel of experts\, we will reflect on the difficult challenge ahead for Europe\, standing at the crossroads of navigating a substantial environmental and climate crisis while concurrently surviving in a  progressively intricate geopolitical landscape. \n  \nSpeakers\n\nGaya Herrington – Research and econometrician. Author of ‘Update to Limits to Growth.’\nJesús A. Núñez – Geopolitical expert. Co-director of IECAH (Institute of Studies on Conflicts and Humanitarian Action)\nRichard Wouters – Think tanker at Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks. Coordinator and co-author of Geopolitics of a Post-Growth Europe.\n\nModerated by Lourdes Lucía\, lawyer and publisher. \n  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: Thursday\, February 8th at 17:30 CEST \nLanguage: Spanish and English (simultaneous translation will be provided) \nLocation: Online\, via Zoom. \nRegistration: Please register in advance via this link in order to receive the Zoom details. \n  \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Fundación Transición Verde\, and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Green European Horizons Academy: Good for All (Belgrade)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nGEF’s Green European Horizons Academy aims to expand the imaginarium of the green movement towards an alternative livable future equally across Europe and beyond. After the first two successful Academies\, (1) The Good Story (focused on green narratives) and (2) The Good Collective (dealt with structures for resilient green organisations)\, with this Green European Horizons Academy: Good for All\, the organisers wish to address raising extractivist and neocolonial practices being enacted inside the territory of the EU\, in member and candidate EU countries\, and outside the borders of the EU\, especially in the light of the green energy transition and the ambitious goals of carbon neutrality. \n\n\nWhat to expect \n\n\n\nUnder the noble goal of climate change mitigation\, the mainstream decarbonisation agenda demands not just cuts in the use of old materials but also the exponential growth of demand for new ones. Thus far\, it is blatantly evident that exploiting natural resources does not mean good for everyone. Neither profit nor pollution is evenly distributed worldwide and locally. With the desire to find answers to the questions of who earns and who pays with health\, dependency\, and poverty and how to achieve well-being for all while avoiding extractivist practices\, we hope to contribute to both the domestic and the international networks of green actors by forging new ties and alliances and setting the basis for further discussion on EU’s policies regarding renewable energy. \nIn this Academy\, we aim to disseminate both academic insights and activist perspectives on extractivism. Our discussions will span its historical roots\, present-day practices\, role in the global economy\, and impact on international politics. We will delve into the conceptual framework of extractivism\, exploring its potential and constraints\, and examining its intersections with neocolonialism and exploitation. However\, our primary emphasis will be on the escalating prevalence of contemporary extractivism\, highlighting the environmental risks and harm it poses\, as well as the grassroots efforts and local struggles against its detrimental effects. \n\nContext \n\n\n\nPositioned as an attractive prospect for foreign multinational companies and trade ministries\, the Western Balkan countries are often marketed as a region with “low earnings and low environmental standards.” Unfortunately\, this portrayal puts at risk the remaining protected nature areas\, drinking water resources\, and the potential for sustainable and organic agriculture. The looming threat comes from an escalating “mining frenzy” and unsustainable hydropower projects\, poised to compromise various locations. Concurrently\, a robust grassroots movement has emerged over the past decade\, opposing extractivism in its various forms. Your presence and expertise could significantly benefit this movement. Our goal is to strengthen both domestic and international networks of green actors by fostering new connections and coalitions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\nIskra Krstić – Polekol\nDiego Marin –  European Environmental Bureau\nJan Moril –  Earthworks\nShanai Matteson –  Tamarack Water Alliance\nJohnny Barber –  Honor the Earth\nAllen Richardson – Honor the Earth\nAnishinaabe elder Ricky DeFoe – Fond du Lac Band of Minnesota Chippewa\nLynda Sullivan – Yes to Life\, No to Mining\nMarijana Petkovic – Alliance of Environmental Organizations of Serbia – Gornje Nedeljice Village\nFrancisco Venes – Unidos em Defesa de Covas do Barroso (UCDB)\nMajda Ibraković –  Eko forum Zenica\n\nProgramme\n\nFebruary 15th Thursday  \n14:30 – 15:00 Registration\n15:00 – 15:30 Setting the scene – presentation of the program and expectations\n15:30 – 17:00 From global to local: getting to know each other and share different perspectives on green transition and extractivism – first part\n17:00 – 17:30 Pause\n17:30 – 19:00 From global to local: getting to know each other and share various perspectives on green transition and extractivism – second part \nFebruary 16th Friday  \n10:00 – 10:30 Opening and welcome\n10:30 – 12:00 Lecture and discussion: What do we mean when we say extractivism – Iskra Krstić\, Polekol\n12:00 – 12:30 Pause\n12:30 – 13:30 Lecture and discussion: EU Critical Raw Material Act and Green New Deal – Diego Marin\, European Environmental Bureau\n13:30 – 15:00 Lunch\n15:00 – 16:30 Lecture and discussion: Right to Say No \n\nwith Jan Moril\, Earthworks\, Shanai Matteson\, Tamarack Water Alliance\, Johnny Barber\, Honor the Earth\, Allen Richardson\, Honor the Earth\n\n16:30 – 17:00 Pause\n17:00 – 19:00 Panel discussion: Moving from Extraction to Regeneration \n\nwith Anishinaabe elder Ricky DeFoe\, Fond du Lac Band of Minnesota Chippewa\, Lynda Sullivan\, Yes to Life\, No to Mining\, Marijana Petkovic\, Alliance of Environmental Organizations of Serbia – Gornje Nedeljice Village\, Francisco Venes\, Unidos em Defesa de Covas do Barroso (UCDB)\, Majda Ibraković\, Eko forum Zenica\n\n20:00 Dinner \nPracticalities\nDate : 15-17 February \nLocation:  Belgrade\, Miljenko Dereta Space\, Dobračina 55\, Belgrade\nRegistration: If you are interested in participating\, please send an email to: organizacija.polekol@gmail.com \n  \n\nThe event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of PolEkol and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Green Thinking on Defence and Security (Brussels)
DESCRIPTION:  \nAbout the event\nThis event will feature the launch of two brand-new GEF publications. We will discuss their content with the authors alongside two expert panels\, leaving  ample time for questions and networking.   \nLAUNCH: Credible yet Critical? Green Approaches to Defence (upcoming) – with GRIP \nIn a shifting geopolitical landscape\, Greens are grappling with the interplay between their traditional pacifist roots and the post-February 2022 security challenges. This report delves into their evolving stances on key defence issues\, from EU military cooperation to disarmament\, offering insights into the varied approaches adopted by Green parties from eight EU countries. Expert viewpoints featured throughout provide further feedback and inputs as to what a Green defence policy could (or should) look like. As Europe navigates turbulent waters\, the report calls for renewed commitment to progressive and principled approaches to security and defence. \nLAUNCH: Geopolitics of a Post-Growth Europe \nIt is unlikely that we will be able to defuse the climate time bomb\, let alone other ecological threats\, as long as our economy continues to grow. But what would the end of economic growth mean for geopolitics? Could a European Union that is the first to embrace post-growth still be a global actor? Would it be able to defend itself\, its allies\, democracy\, human rights\, and the international rule of law at a time when aggressive autocracies are invading or threatening their democratic neighbours? By igniting a conversation between critics of economic growth and progressive thinkers on foreign and security policy\, this report addresses uneasy questions that few have dared to ask.   \n  \nProject background\nThis event is part of the Green European Foundation’s thematic focus on geopolitics\, peace\, and security. In a complex\, fractured\, and volatile geopolitical environment\, GEF works to bring together CSOs\, activists\, academics\, and other experts for open and multi-faceted discussions on Europe’s security challenges. With a clear eye on the future\, the foundation aims to cultivate green thinking and European policy proposals that address not just the crises of today\, but can build resilience in a more just and sustainable world.   \n  \nSpeakers\n\nAgatha Verdebout – Groupe de recherche et d’information sur la paix et la sécurité \nAntoine Oger – Institute for European Environmental Policy\nLaëtitia Sédou – European Network Against the Arms Trade \nNicoletta Pirozzi – Istituto Affari Internazionali \nOlivia Lazard – Carnegie Europe\nRichard Wouters – Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks\nRoderick Kefferpütz – Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung EU\n\nAnd more to be announced!  \n  \nProgramme\n15:00 – 15:15 Opening words  \n15:15 – 16:30 Presentation and panel discussion on Green Visions on European Security   \n16:30 – 16:45 Coffee break  \n16:45 – 18:00 Presentation and panel discussion on Geopolitics of a Post-Growth Europe  \n18:00 – 19:00 Closing remarks and networking drinks  \n  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: Wednesday\, March 6th (15:00 – 19:00 CET) \nLocation: Press Club Brussels Europe \nLanguage: English \nRegistration: This event is taking place in person with limited spots. SUMMARY:Dismantling the growth narrative
DESCRIPTION:About\nPerpetual economic growth on a finite planet is unsustainable\, yet entrenched economic and media forces persist in upholding it as the sole truth. How did this ideology of growth become so dominant? And more importantly\, how can we shift towards constructing new paradigms? \nTo explore these pressing questions\, GEF is launching the  Spanish translation of the publication\, “On the Narrative of Growth: Unlearning Dogmas.” Delve into thought-provoking insights and participate in a compelling debate on reimagining our economic future. Don’t miss this opportunity to gain a firsthand impression of our publication and contribute to the dialogue shaping our collective tomorrow. Stay tuned for the forthcoming English translation. \nWith this event we wish to contribute to dismantle the discourse of economic growth so that other visions of the world can penetrate the social imaginary. We will review how this discourse became hegemonic\, how to build new paradigms and how to involve the social majority in new imaginaries capable of breaking down the wall of dogmas that the economic model has built. \nTo do so\, we will be joined by the economist José Manuel Naredo\, the professor Julia Steinberger and the social researcher Aurora Rodríguez del Barrio. \n  \nProject background\nThis event is part of GEF’s project Countering the growth narrative\, This project arose with the idea of encouraging the questioning of faith in economic growth as the only path to prosperity\, introducing into society a reflection on the narrative of growth as a necessary step to prepare the ground for proposals that include as a basic principle protecting the livability of the planet with justice and equity. \n  \nSpeakers\n\nJosé Manuel Naredo. Economist and statistician\, pioneer in the study and dissemination of ecological economics in Spain and beyond\nJulia Steinberger. Professor of Societal Challenges of Climate Change at the University of Lausanne. Her research examines the connections between resource use and societal performance. She is Lead Author for the IPCC’s 6th Assessment Report.\nAurora Rodríguez del Barrio. Social and cultural researcher. Member of the team that produced the report “On the Narrative of Growth. Unlearning dogmas” of the Green European Foundation.\n\n  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 21st March\, 5:30pm – 7pm CET \nLocation: Zoom \nLanguage: Spanish and English (simultaneous translation will be provided) \nRegistration: Prior registration is required. SUMMARY:Materials\, (De)Growth and Geopolitics (Utrecht)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nEuropean demand for materials has impacts all over the world. Our consumption\, far greater than the global average\, contributes to the destruction of ecosystems near and far. For some materials and goods\, we depend on autocratic regimes. So there is an ecological and a geopolitical need to reduce our resource consumption. To do so\, should we abandon the pursuit of economic growth\, as advocated by the degrowth movement? Could we still meet everyone’s needs and grow our well-being?  \nMany of the materials that we use\, including for the energy transition\, are extracted in the Global South. There\, mining often comes at the expense of the environment\, nature and local communities. At the same time\, millions of people depend on mining for their livelihoods. Can the EU assist developing countries in earning more with less mining? Can we break with neo-colonial exploitation and build new partnerships with the Global South? After all\, we need partners in a time of mounting geopolitical conflicts and a deepening ecological crisis.  \nThe questions we discuss in this seminar are inspired by GEF’s report Geopolitics of a Post-Growth Europe and a (forthcoming) report by the Dutch Young Climate Movement on what young people need to live sustainably. We will discuss them with experts\, in plenary and break-out sessions\, and formulate political action points together.  \n  \nProgramme and Speakers\n13:00 Arrivals and registration  \n13:30 Welcome by moderator Erika van der Linden (young climate activist)  \n13:35 Short introductions  \n\nEcology and geopolitics – Richard Wouters (Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks) \nResource hunger and the Global South – Marius Troost (Both Ends) \n\n13:55 Interactive discussion  \n14:30 Break  \n14:40 Breakout sessions  \n\nCircularity and post-growth \nSustainable and just mobility \nResource partnership with the Global South  \nTechnology and geopolitics \n\n15:40 Break  \n16:00 Closing panel with Erika van der Linden\, Richard Wouters\, Trineke Palm (Wetenschappelijk Instituut ChristenUnie)\, Tishana Martijn (Jonge Klimaatbeweging)\, René Kleijn (University Leiden)\, and others  \n17:00 Closing and drinks  \n  \nPracticalities\nDate and time: Friday\, 14 June\, from 13:30 to 17:00 CEST  \nLocation: De Kargadoor\, Oudegracht 36\, Utrecht  \nLanguage: Dutch  \nRegistration: This event is open to the general public\, but prior registration is required. SUMMARY:Enough: Thriving Societies Beyond Growth (Brussels)
DESCRIPTION:About the event \nThe term “degrowth” often causes panic among mainstream opinion makers and many economists in Europe. Economic growth is the lubricant of capitalism. We are told that if the economy is growing\, all is well. But what do we mean by growth? Should everything keep growing endlessly? The ecological crisis shows that infinite growth on a finite planet is impossible. Meanwhile\, the current economic system fails to secure livelihoods and deepens inequalities. There is an alternative to this self-destructive system: an economy of enough\, which would provide for everyone’s basic needs while tackling greed and overconsumption. \n The EU has the potential to lead the ecological transition. Although the Green Deal was a significant step forward\, it remains locked within a growth-addicted economy with a core principle of competition in a single market\, and it does not sufficiently address social inequality. We need to imagine a different European economy\, rooted in a new paradigm\, before we can build it. \nThis is why the Green European Foundation is launching “Enough: Thriving Societies Beyond Growth”. Written by Dirk Holemans\, Lara Ferrante\, and Elze Vermaas\, this essay explores how societies can thrive without depending on economic growth. It presents a compelling vision of fewer private jets\, less inequality\, fewer burnouts\, and reduced waste\, alongside more quality of life\, more time for each other\, more sustainable products\, and a healthier planet. In other words\, a good life for everyone within the planet’s limits. This essay gives us the keys to imagine a different Europe. \n\n\n\n\nDuring this event\, we will be joined by the authors of the book to delve into its intricacies and explore ideas for achieving true well-being in a society beyond growth. \n\n\n\n\nThis book launch is part of GEF’s focus on the Green Deal for All. It builds on research and events in 2023 that sought to explore how we can strengthen the social dimension of the EGD and what novel ideas and policy proposals can help us look even further\, to future-proof ideas for thriving societies within planetary boundaries.   \n  \nSpeakers\n \n\nBen Eersels – Executive Director at G1000\nSibo Rugwiza Kanobana – lecturer in sociolinguistics and postcolonial studies at Ghent University & author of Witte Orde\nMartine Delsemme – co-operator of Brussels based co-operative supermarket Bees Coop\nRebekka Eschauzier – climate activist extinction rebellion\nLara Ferrante – Enough co-author\nElze Vermaas – Enough co-author\n\nModerated by Dirk Holemans (Oikos\, Enough co-author) \n  \nProgramme\n19h30: Doors open  \n20h-21h30: Start of the event\, presentation and discussion around the book  \n21h30: Networking drinks  \n  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 21 June 2024\, 20h-21h30 (doors open at 19h30\, bar opens at 21h30) \nLocation: De Buren\, Leopoldstraat 6\, 1000 Brussels \nLanguage:  English \nRegistration: This event is free and open to all\, but please register in advance here to help us keep track of expected participant numbers. \n  \n\nThis book launch is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Oikos and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:About the event\nDo we really want to continue on the path of exponential growth and increasing consumerism? If we do\, a major global catastrophe is inevitable. Rapid change is needed at all levels: global\, European\, national\, regional\, and local. While the European Green Deal has provided a much-needed roadmap at the EU level\, its implementation\, particularly the social dimension\, has fallen short of many greens’ hopes and expectations. More worryingly\, the progress made over the past five years is now under threat from growing conservative and far-right voices in the European Parliament and certain national governments. Amid these forces of delay and distraction\, it is crucial to equip European citizens with the tools to continue fighting for a European Green Deal for All. \nPoland “returned to the European Union” thanks to the extraordinary electoral mobilisation of Polish society\, especially women and young people. However\, with this new progressive coalition in power\, it is crucial for progressive stakeholders to strengthen their bonds to ensure a lasting impact on society. Additionally\, they must ensure that the new coalition remains true to the principles for which they were elected. \n\n\n\n\nThis one-day GEF summer school in Poland aims to connect the green movement\, NGOs\, activists\, and other relevant stakeholders. The program will cover topics such as just energy transition\, alternative models like doughnut cities and the wellbeing economy\, and the future of the European Green Deal (EGD). \nSessions will explore the connections between the ecological and social dimensions of the doughnut model\, with a backdrop of the European Union’s landscape following the 2024 elections\, especially concerning the fate of the EGD. Particular attention will be given to exchanging local solutions and best practices to build grassroots support and resilience for eco-social policies\, utilizing European tools and leverage where possible. \nRegarding energy transition\, the focus will be on lignite mining\, which dominates this Polish-Czech-German border region\, seeking cross-border exchanges and ideas. \n\n\n\n\n  \nProject background\nThis project connects to GEF’s strategic and thematic priorities Capacity Building for All\, Go Green East and South\, and Green Deal for All. Additionally\, it reinforces GEF’s specific focus on Poland and maintains the momentum of our work as the European Green Academy moves to Brussels in 2024.  \n  \nSpeakers\nTo be announced  \n  \nProgramme\n10:00 – 11:30 Doughnut morning: building a thriving\, just\, and inclusive Europe within planetary boundaries   \nCONFERENCE HALL (EN/PL): Roundtable on the social doughnut – how to ensure inclusion of women\, youth\, LGBTQ+ residents\, and people with disabilities?    \nPARALLEL ROOM (EN): Workshop on introducing the city-level doughnut as a social pact   \n   \n11:30 – 12:00 Coffee break   \n   \n12:00 – 12:45 Official opening and keynote speeches   \nCONFERENCE HALL (EN/PL)   \n   \n12:45 – 13:45 Plenary debate: Future of the European Green Deal   \nCONFERENCE HALL (EN/PL): Panel discussion on EU 2024: What about the European Green Deal for All?   \n   \n13:45 – 15:00 Lunch break   \n   \n15:00 – 17:30 Energy transition afternoon: transborder exchanges   \n   \n15:00 CONFERENCE HALL (EN/PL): Plenary presentations on transborder approach to energy transition: the future of lignite in the Tri-Earth region   \n16:00 CONFERENCE HALL (EN/PL): Round table discussion on the future of lignite areas of the Tri-Earth transborder region   \n  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 29th of June\, 10AM-6PM CEST \nLocation: Szklarska Poręba\, Poland \nLanguage:  English and Polish (simultaneous translation will be provided) \nRegistration and logistics: This summer school is open to everyone. SUMMARY:A European Green Caring Society
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThis event marks the launch of the GEF Political Brief: A European Green Caring Society – Overcoming Fragmentation. This publication is a result of a Knowledge Community led by Proto(to)pia founder and GEF core expert Céline Charveriat\, with contributions of a wider group of experts. It examines the interconnections between care for the climate\, biodiversity and the environment on the one hand and care for humans on the other. It argues that the related systems are currently in a twin crisis and advocate for integrated political solutions. \nKey proposals to achieve this goal are put forward in the Brief. They include extending the EU’s Do No Harm principle to encompass both human and environmental care\, fostering a green care sector\, implementing ecological and progressive tax reforms\, establishing a People’s Sovereignty Fund and creating a new Commission Vice-Presidency for Caring Societies. These initiatives aim to bridge policy silos\, promote sustainability\, and ensure social equity\, thus fostering a resilient and inclusive European society. The concept of a Green Caring Society also has significant international implications. The interconnected nature of both the ecological crisis and public health risks necessitates global cooperation. The EU must minimize the negative impacts of its (care) systems on the rest of the world while maximizing positive outcomes through mutually beneficial partnerships. Supporting a global green care strategy and advocating for the rights of future generations and nature are essential components of this effort. \nA Green Caring Society can bring the EU closer to its citizens and enhance overall well-being while respecting the planet’s boundaries. This unified approach of green and human care policy strands has the potential to significantly enhance public support for the European project and ensure a sustainable\, resilient future for all. \nOn the 11th of July Celine Charveriat will present the Political Brief\, after which we will have experts joining us for a panel discussion. \n  \nSpeakers\n\nCéline Charveriat – Founder of Proto(to)pia Consulting and core expert of the Knowledge Community A European Green Caring Society\nRobbie Stakelum – Head of Policy and Advocacy Social Platform\nNicolas Galudec – Senior Policy Advisor at United Nations Environment Programme\, Brussels office\nSylvia Lorek – Chair of Sustainable Europe Research Institute Germany (SERI)\nBlanca De Riquer Gatell – Advisor Greens /EFA group in the European Parliament\nMaria Nikolopoulou – Member of the European Economic and Social Committee\nModerated by Taube Van Melkebeke – Policy Manager at Green European Foundation\n\n\nAgenda\n9h30: Doors open \n10h – 10h30: Opening of the event\, presentation of the Political Brief A European Green Caring Society – Overcoming Fragmentation \n10h30 – 12h00: Panel discussion: moving towards a European Green Caring Society – what steps to take in the next EU legislation? \n  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 11 July 2024\, 9h30 – 12h \nLocation: Mundo Madou\, Av. des Arts 7/8\, 1210 Brussels (Room: Artemisia)\nand online (link will be shared with registered participants) \nLanguage:  English \nRegistration: This event is free and open to all. SUMMARY:Tbilisi Security Conference
DESCRIPTION:About the event:\nDespite the ideals and efforts of several generations to bring lasting peace to Europe and the world\, armed conflict and escalation remain a daily presence in the lives of many young Europeans – whether in their direct lived experience\, their fears for the future\, or their contacts and solidarity with peers elsewhere. This includes not just Russia’s invasion of Ukraine\, but also violence in the South Caucasus and Gaza\, among others. While the Green movement is rooted in non-violence and pacifism\, these terms are at times vaguely defined and understood within and outside the Green movement. They are also easier to defend in times of peace. \nThis one-day conference in Tbilisi will spotlight and dive deeper into GEF’s ongoing work on geopolitics\, peace\, and security\, combining expert inputs with non-formal education on topics ranging from peacebuilding in practice\, to environment and security\, to green practice and proposals on European defence. With a particular focus on enlargement as well as youth perspectives\, the conference aims to be a space for learning and reflection\, and to highlight green visions for a safer Europe and world. \n  \nProject background:\nThis project connects directly to GEF’s thematic priority Geopolitics\, Peace\, and Security\, as well as the transversal focus on youth. SUMMARY:Green Academy: Stay with the Trouble! (Komiža)
DESCRIPTION:About the event:\nThe Green Academy is a discussion and dialogue platform\, established in 2010 as a space for advanced learning in political ecology. The 9th edition of Green Academy is entitled ”Stay with the Trouble\,” and will feature a varied programme of keynotes\, panels\, workshops\, and social activities. As part of the programme\, GEF is hosting a series of Green Talks spotlighting our latest work on the wellbeing economy\, adaptation\, and building a resilient Europe beyond growth. \n\nProject background:\nIf trends continue\, the summer of 2024 is likely to be the hottest yet\, with the daily reality of the climate crisis coming into even sharper focus for ever more citizens. Yet unlike five years ago\, climate and biodiversity do not dominate the political headlines or European voter priorities\, whether due to disillusionment\, disinformation\, or competing concerns like cost-of-living and (in)security. \nMore than ever\, it is important to demonstrate how social and ecological justice go hand in hand\, and to foster the bottom-up democracy to make that happen. Concepts and ideas like post-growth\, the commons\, and citizen assemblies may hold some of the answers\, but need the right narratives and policy grounding to truly pierce the mainstream European debate. GEF has supported this endeavour for a long time\, including as a partner of the 2023 Beyond Growth Conference in the European Parliament and the International Degrowth Conference that took place in Zagreb that same year. \nAs we get ready to enter a new EU cycle\, with a reshuffled parliament and Commission\, it is crucial to keep the momentum going and ensure that wellbeing and a prosperous Europe beyond growth remain on the agenda. The Green Academy provides a constructive yet convivial setting in which to learn\, exchange and expand on this challenge\, in line with GEF’s role as a hub for political education and laboratory for new ideas. \n\nProgramme and Speakers:\nGEF’s Green Talks  are featured in specific slots throughout the programme. August 24th and August 28th are arrival and departure days. \nMonday\, 26/08 (12 – 13:30): Enough – Thriving Democracies for Tomorrow’s Europe \nPanel discussion with Remy Bonny\, Danijela Dolenec\, Dirk Holemans\, and Elze Vermaas (moderated by Alice Hubbard) \nTuesday\, 27/08 (12 – 13:30): A Race Against the Clock? Time and Climate Adaptation \nPanel discussion with Marc Martorell Escofet\, Marie-Monique Franssen\, and Katarina Kusic (moderated by Alessio Giussani) \nTuesday\, 27/08 (17 – 19:00): Knowledge Community on the European Wellbeing Economy \nInteractive workshop with Emma Bergeling and Antoine Oger (moderated by Sien Hasker and Laurent Standaert) \n\nPracticalities:\nDate and Time: 24-28 August \nLocation: Hotel Biševo – Komiža\, Croatia \nLanguage: English   \nThis is an invitation-only event with limited capacity.
