SUMMARY:EGAT Catalonia: 2023-2024 edition
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nWe are looking for 15 young people (18-25 years old) who want to be agents of change towards a more sustainable\, supportive and fair society. \nWe are offering an opportunity for you to participate in a training program for young European green activists\, or aspiring ones. As part of this training we will deal with the pillars of political ecology\, European values and the possibilities that European institutions offer in terms of green  policies for the European community. \nThis edition is focused on rethinking our life models and exploring the alternatives promoted by European green political ecology under the title “An(other) way of living”. \nYou will learn how European institutions work and how things can be changed from politics\, from values of social\, ecological and feminist justice. You will also meet other activists\, with whom you will share your struggles and experiences. You will be able to go to Brussels to meet key actors from European institutions and civil society as well as the other participating people from 6 other countries (Croatia\, Hungary\, Poland\, Czech Republic\, Greece and Finland). \n\nProgramme\nThe training consists of two training seminars\, lasting one weekend (Saturday morning to Sunday afternoon). Each of the seminars will have a specific theme based on the values of European green policy and intercommunity social justice. \nWe will engage with people who fight for the planet from a political background\, and expert people who will offer their vision. In small groups\, you will delve deeper into the concepts and techniques to achieve the change we want. \nWhen will it take place? \nNovember 4-5\, 2023  (Barcelona) \nFirst seminar \n2-3 December 2023 (Barcelona) \nSecond seminar \nJanuary 2023 (Online) \nOnline meeting with activists from other countries \nMarch 2023 (Brussels) \nTrip to Brussels \n\nPracticalities\nIf you are between 18 and 25 years old and fit the profile we are looking for\, send us an email and tell us why you are interested in participating. From there we will tell you what the next steps are. You have until September 20 to do it! \nCost of the training \nThe activity has a solidarity fee of 40 euros for the two seminars and the trip to Brussels. However\, if you can afford the cost\, tell us in your email and we will find a solution for you to participate. For any doubts contact us at egat@noushoritzons.cat \n  \n\nThis project is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Fundació Nous Horitzons and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Green Political Activists Training on Climate Policy (Budapest)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nWhat is climate policy and what does it look like in Hungary and at the EU level? Together we’ll explore concrete steps we can take to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees or explore issues such as disappearing pollinators and animal and plant species becoming extinct. \nWould you like to debate the responsibility of individuals and decision-makers in environmental protection? Have you heard of plants that can withstand extreme urban climates? Do you think electric cars are a green solution? Do we even need a nuclear power plant? Why can’t wind farms be built in Hungary? What is the European Green Deal about? What does a fair green transition in Europe mean? \nIn our first session of the green political activist training\, we will discuss these issues with a focus on Hungary and the European Union. We will highlight current political action and plausible solutions. Special emphasis will be put on EU green policy and viable tools for political activism. \nProject background\nThis event is part of the Green European Foundation’s Green Political Activist Training Project. We put together a series of learning activities aiming to help participants to understand the concepts of political ecology and apply them to both local and European-level politics. We will examine various policies and policy proposals ranging from local politics to the European Green Deal. Our goal is to prepare participants for both assessing and advocating policies in line with progressive green values. We’ll also provide young green activists with them tools and knowledge\, as well as an opportunity to network\, get in contact with political actors and experts on multiple levels and come together as a political community. It is essential for us to help like-minded movements and actors connect in order to help the political ecosystem flourish. \nSpeakers\nDr habil. SUMMARY:Democracy and its enemies
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThis debate will focus on the dangers that democracy in Europe is currently facing. We will explore how fake news\, hate speech\, and the discrediting of social movements\, politics and organisations harm democratic processes. \nThe debate will focus on the influence these issues have on the younger generations and how young people experience messages such as climate change denial or lost hope in the face of the climate emergency or how unbridled capitalism delegitimise governments to favour of economic growth. \nThis debate is particularly relevant now that the pandemic and war in Ukraine produce a sense of unease\, providing an opportunity for authoritarian views to become more widespread. \nProject background\nThe event is the first one in a series of three debates\, taking place in Barcelona and revolving around three pressing issues; the state of democracy\, local policies for a fair and just transition\, and Green Taxation. \nSpeakers\n\nPablo Simon\, Political Scientist\nCristina Monge\, Sociologist and Political Activist\nEudald Espluga\, Philosopher\nGwendoline Delbos-Corfield\, MEP Greens/EFA\n\nProgramme\n6.30 p.m. Introduction of the speakers start of speakers’ interventions. \n7.30 p.m. – 8 p.m. discussion with the audience \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 24th April\, 18:30 \nLocation: Espai Assemblea of CCOO (Via Laietana\, 16 Barcelona) \nLanguage:  Catalan/Spanish and English \nRegistration: Please reserve your spot here \n  \n\nThis event organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Fundació Nous Horitzons and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. The European Parliament is not responsible for the content of this event.

SUMMARY:Feminist Leadership Survey
DESCRIPTION:About the survey\nThe past decade has seen a growth in the number of women taking up leadership roles in Civil Society Organisations at all levels\, seeking to bring systemic change approaches to their work. We have also seen how difficult it still is for women to flourish\, even in our allegedly progressive organisations where patriarchal and long hours cultures prevail. Women leaders seeking to bring much needed transformative and feminist leadership styles are facing challenges within their organisations as well as within wider society\, which came into sharper focus during COVID. \nThrough this survey\, we are seeking to shine a light on what is happening for Women CSO leaders in Europe as working culture and systems are shifting in the wake of COVID; in light of multiple systemic crises as well as the impact of #MeToo\, #BLM and climate movements. \nWe are seeking your concrete ideas for how employers and donors can invest in improving the situation for diverse women in leadership roles in civil society. By contributing a little of your time to this survey you will be helping to deepen our collective understanding how organisations and donors can invest in transforming outdated systems and workplace dynamics to bring about a much-needed seismic shift culture of work. \nYour responses and contributions which will be entirely confidential and anonymized will also bring recommendations for the NGOs as employers as well as for their donors and supporters within the EU institutions\, Member States and philanthropic arena. \nWho is this survey for?\nThis survey is aimed at women in a leadership position working in civil society\, in Europe and beyond. Take it here! \nWho are we?\nFour progressive European foundations join forces around this joint project: GEF (Green European Foundation)\, FEPS (Foundation for European Progressive Studies)\, FES (Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung)\, and Heinrich Böll Stiftung. The feminist leadership expert Joanna Maycock and systemic change specialist Céline Charveriat are working together to conduct the research. \nAs well as the survey\, we will also be carrying out structured interviews and focus groups. You will be able to indicate your willingness to participate in these at the end of the survey! \nFinally: As a recognition of the time you contribute to completing this survey we are offering a free quickfire coaching session with qualified Coach Angela Philips. You can book your free session at the end of the survey! \n

SUMMARY:How to protect a Post-Growth Europe? (Sofia)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nGreen policies that respect planetary boundaries and allow the Global South to develop seem incompatible with unlimited economic growth in the EU. We need a realistic scenario for a future in which we consume more sparingly but live better together\, a scenario that concepts of degrowth and post-growth can offer. \nThe war in Ukraine completely changed the global landscape. Today\, the idea of ending GDP growth in the EU encounters new and important geopolitical impediments with power and wealth being measured in military capacity. Can a degrowth Europe build strength and resilience in this context? \nTo tackle this issue\, the Green European Foundation is organising a series of expert meetings across Europe\, including the present one with the support of BlueLink in Bulgaria. Outcomes from these expert meetings and further research and interviews will feed into a final publication to be launched in autumn 2023. \nWe invite Bulgarian researchers\, activists and policy makers with an interest in green policies and geopolitics to present papers and/or engage in an analytical discussion defined by the following analytical framework: \n\nWhat are the tensions and synergies between managed degrowth within the EU and the EU’s ability to achieve its geopolitical objectives\, such as promoting security in a broad sense?\nCan tension be mitigated? If so\, how?\nHow would it be possible to optimize the possibilities that degrowth offer?\n\nNot every question has a definitive answer and we promote creativity\, analytical thinking and fresh approaches to the challenge. \nProject background\nThis event is part of GEF’s Geopolitics of Post-Growth project\, which explores the tensions between degrowth/post-growth and geopolitics. The project aims to ignite a conversation between critics of economic growth and progressive thinkers on foreign and security policy\, who now often operate in separate circuits. It aims to find solutions beyond naïve anti-militarism and convenient belief in green growth.  \nSpeakers and Programme \nFurther details to be announced.  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: April 28th\, 14:00 – 17:00 CET \nLocation: House of Europe – 124\, 1000 Sofia Center\, Sofia\, Bulgaria \nLanguage:  The seminar will be held in Bulgarian\, but presentations in English are acceptable. \nRegistration: Researchers\, experts\, activists or politicians wishing to join the discussion with academic or conceptual contributions\, opinions and opinions\, or as discussants on the subject\, are invited to register for participation via this link. Only registered participants will be admitted to the event. \nIf you have any further questions or wish to discuss your potential contribution\, please reach Pavel Antonov\, PhD at tel. 0888 704 661 or by e-mail at office@bluelink.net.  \n  \n\nThis expert seminar is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of BlueLink and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. SUMMARY:Green Political Activists Training (Budapest)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThe second session of the Green Political Activism Training will tackle the sustainable countryside. Alongside experts\, we will explore the issues of water management\, ecosystems\, sustainable agriculture and food sovereignty\, biodiversity and agricultural policy at both national and EU level. \nSpeakers\nAnikó Csecserits  \nAnikó will describe what are the main current and future habitats of the region and what influences have shaped them in the past and now. This session will look at the condition of our native forests\, grasslands\, wetlands and agricultural habitats\, what ecosystem services they can provide\, and what sources of information are available? What is the importance of biodiversity for human life? \nPéter Kajner \nIn recent years\, Hungary’s drought has accelerated spectacularly: the water yield of our watercourses is decreasing\, especially in the eastern part of the country\, and long and devastating droughts and heat waves are frequent. Yet\, the phenomenon was spread out in almost whole Eurpe. Agriculture is not only a victim but also partly responsible for this. Excessively high rates of intensive arable cultivation\, the decline of natural habitats\, the drainage of inland water and the increasing exploitation of surface water resources are accelerating the drying of landscapes. Climate change is expected to worsen the situation and we need to find a rapid and effective response to these challenges. The solution may be to retain water in landscapes using near-natural methods. However\, this requires space\, which in turn requires land-use change and sustainable management practices. \nLili Balogh \nDalma Dedák \nThe functioning of natural systems has been altered\, the renewability of natural resources has been compromised and the quality of life of present and future generations is fundamentally affected. Recognising the economic and social costs of environmental degradation\, the European Union has launched an intensive effort to restore natural systems\, the steps of which are set out in the policy framework of the Green Agreement. This presentation will show how the EU’s biodiversity and agriculture strategy fits into the EU’s green policy framework and will discuss the implications for domestic environmental and agricultural policy. SUMMARY:Beyond Growth Conference
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nWith this event \, the organisers aim to challenge conventional policy-making in the European Union and to redefine societal goals across the board\, in order to move away from the harmful focus on the sole economic growth – that is\, the growth of GDP – as the basis of our development model. The conference will put into practice the idea of a post-growth future-fit EU that combines social well-being and viable economic development with the respect of planetary boundaries. \nThis three-day event is a cross-party initiative of 20 Members of the European Parliament\, supported by a wide-range of partner organisations\, which follows the success of the Post-Growth 2018 conference. The conference offers an opportunity for discussion across institutional boundaries and with European citizens. It will involve stakeholders from EU and national policymaking\, academia\, social partners and civil society organisations. As it aims to discuss the future of European citizens\, it will take place in their house\, in the European Parliament (Brussels’ site) on 15-16-17 May 2023. Live streaming will also be available. \n  \n  \n  \nContext\nThe Green European Foundation supports innovative approaches to economic sustainability in Europe and\, together with its European and national partners\, aspires to contribute to the transition towards societies that enable a good life for all within planetary boundaries. \nEconomic transformation has been a core area of work for GEF since its beginning. Today the foundation is active in fostering the reflection on the creation of a society and the functioning of an economy beyond GDP growth. GEF also  aims to be at the forefront of the critique of economic growth and the existing economic model by supporting the coming to light of alternative models and ideas. In this context\, it is with great pleasure that the foundation will actively support the organisation of the upcoming Beyond Growth Conference. \n  \n  \n  \nPracticalities\nDates: 15-17 May \nLocation: European Parliament (Brussels) and online \nRegistration: Please sign up here \n\nDegrowth Open Letter\nThere is no empirical basis indicating that it is possible to globally and sufficiently decouple economic growth from environmental pressures. \n \nRead here \n  \nGEF in the Media\nEU Observer \n\nHow would a #postgrowth EU defend itself\, its allies\, democracy\, human rights and a rules-based international order against attacks by the likes of Russia or China? \nIn the run up to the #BeyondGrowth Conference\, @RichardWouters writes how 👇🇪🇺https://t.co/LEUnGq8kyz \n— Green European Foundation (@GEF_Europe) May 11\, 2023 \n \nElDiario.es \n\nUn cambio de paradigma "no significa un empeoramiento de nuestro nivel de vida\, si exploramos cómo es realmente una vida sana y de calidad. SUMMARY:Green Growth vs. Degrowth (Utrecht)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nCan our economy continue to grow if we want to respect planetary boundaries and give developing countries room to meet the needs of their inhabitants?   \nYes\, say proponents of ‘green growth’. To do so\, we need strict climate and environmental policies that drive technological innovation and reduce the most polluting forms of consumption. The drive for green growth underpins the European Green Deal.   \nNo\, say the advocates of ‘de-growth’. Decoupling economic growth from ecological damage is an illusion. Therefore\, rich countries must abandon the growth imperative\, scale back overproduction and overconsumption and focus on collective well-being. The degrowth movement is gaining popularity among scientists and activists.   \nIn this seminar\, we explore the differences and similarities between ‘green growth’ and ‘degrowth’ with proponents of both schools of thought as well as Green and Labour politicians. What facts and trends do the two movements invoke? What are the underlying visions of society? Is there any overlap between the political agendas?  \nProject background\nThis event is part of GEF’s Geopolitics of Post-Growth project\, which explores the tensions between degrowth/post-growth and geopolitics. The project aims to ignite a conversation between critics of economic growth and progressive thinkers on foreign and security policy\, who now often operate in separate circuits. It aims to find solutions beyond naïve anti-militarism and convenient belief in green growth.   \nThe geopolitical ramifications of (de)growth will be discussed in a follow-up seminar.  \nSpeakers and Programme\n14:00 – 14:10 Opening by moderator Suzanne Kröger (MP GroenLinks)  \n14:10 – 14:20 Presentation by Diederik Samsom (head of cabinet of European Commission VP Frans Timmermans)  \n14:20 – 14:30 Presentation by Karolien van Teijlingen (social geographer Radboud University Nijmegen)  \n14:30 – 14:40 Audience Q&A  \n14:40 – 14:50 Presentation by Wim Naudé (professor technology & innovation management RWTH Aachen University)  \n14:50 – 15:00 Presentation by Hans Stegeman (chief economist Triodos Bank\, columnist)  \n15:00 – 15:10 Audience Q&A  \n15:10 – 15:50 Discussion  \n15:50 – 16:00   Closing words  \nPracticalities: \nDate and Time: Friday 19 May\, from 14:00 to 16:00 CEST \nLocation: De Kargadoor\, Oudegracht 36\, Utrecht\, Netherlands \nLanguage:  Dutch   \nRegistration: Participation is free of charge. SUMMARY:European Green Deal: Degrowth and Deliberative Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThe European Green Deal (EGD) is an ambitious long-term program of the European Commission to implement a green and just transition in Europe. With EGD\, we should become a climate neutral continent focused on the well-being of citizens and operating within ecological limits. \nThis ambitious plan is often threatened by financial interests which aim to implement it under the umbrella of green growth\, in an authoritarian\, technocratic and technology dependent manner. The social and democratic dimension of the Green Deal remains unclear\, and the prosperity of citizens in such a narrative is still linked to the idea of indefinite economic growth. Therefore\, as part of this event we will dive deeper into the debate related to deliberative democracy/civic participation from a degrwoth perspective -a concept that approaches the question of well-being as not dependent on economic growth. Discussants from Ljubljana\, Zagreb and Belgrade will share with us insights on the reception of the concept of degrowth in the European semi-periphery\, in the context of the European Green Deal. \nEvent aims to attract variety of stakeholders and bring them into discussion; scholars\, researchers\, activists\, municipal politicians\, intellectuals\, trade unionists\, cultural workers and all other citizens interested to discuss the future of well-being beyond the growth. It combines European perspective which will be brought by European key note speaker on deliberative and participatory democracy and green activists from the region to discuss development of narrative and idea of degrowth/postgrowth in the region. \n  \nProject background\nThis project is part of the Postgrowth Future(s) one partner project aiming  to draw attention to the topic of Degrowth as well as the forthcoming 9th International Degrowth Conference which will take place in August 2023 in Zagreb. With thematic focus on the European Green Deal it brings additional perspectives and angles to the discussion\, originating from degrowth movement and deliberative practices. \n  \nSpeakers\n\nGiovanni Allegreti\, University of Coimbra\, Portugal\nVedran Horvat\, Institute for Political Ecology/GEF\nJelena Puđak\, Scientists for Climate\, Croatia\nAjda Pistotnik\, Policy Lab\, Slovenia\nPredrag Momčilović\, Center for green politics\, Serbia\nMladen Domazet\, Institute for philosophy\n\n  \nProgramme\n18:00 Introduction and welcome – Vedran Horvat \n18.10 Key not lecture – Giovanni Allegreti \n18.40 Discussion \n19.10 Public debate – Ajda Pistotnik \n19.20 Public Debate – Predrag Momčilović \n19.30 Public – Debate Jelena Puđak \n19.40 – discussion \n20.00 Conclusion and announcement \n  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: Friday 26th May 2023. \nLocation: Botaničar café\, Marulićev trg\, Zagreb \nRegistration:  No registration needed \nLanguage: Croatian \n  \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of  Institute for Political Ecology and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation

SUMMARY:Tomorrow’s Europe – replacing energy at the centre of the European political\, security and democratic project
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThe conference will bring together around 60 intellectuals\, policy makers\, entrepreneurs\, journalists\, economists\, political scientists\, activists and students\, and is an important opportunity for us to join the conversation in collaboration with other European political foundations and families. The GEF plenary will take place on 9 June\, from 17:45-18:45\, and will focus on the need to rethink the European Energy project. \nContext\nEnergy was the cornerstone of the European economic and political project after the second World War. The way we envisage our energy systems impacts the very fabric of our societies and therefore our common future as Europeans. The war of aggression in Ukraine and the numerous turbulences in the global economic and geopolitical landscape have stressed more than ever that the way the European Union designs and implements its energy policy has far reaching consequences on security\, democracy\, environmental sustainability and social justice. Based on a framing paper initially authored by Benedek Javor for the Green European Foundation\, the keynote speaker and the panelists will present their take and political ideas on how the European energy architecture and system could be more fair\, democratic\, resilient and secure. \nSpeakers\nIntroduction : Laurent Standaert (Political Director at GEF) \nDiscussants: \n\nJesse Scott (Visiting Research Fellow\, German Institute for Economic Research\, Berlin)\nRosa Martinez (Green European Journal – editorial board and former Spanish MEP)\nShahin Vallée (German Council on Foreign Relations\, France-Germany)\nStéphane Bourgeois (leader of the Collaborative Low Energy Vision for the European Region (CLEVER) research project and European relations and policy manager at NEGAWATT\, France)\nModerated by Seden Anlar (Climate Communicator & Journalist Podcast Producer & Trainer)\n\nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 9 June\, from 17:45-18:4 \nPlace: Certosa di Pontignano 5\, località Pontignano\, 53019 Castelnuovo Berardenga\, Siena \nLanguage: The main language of this event will be English \nContact: To receive more information and to participate please contact Giorgia Caianiello (giorgia.caianiello@visionandvalue.com). \n  \n\nThis event is organised in collaboration with the Green European Foundation \, with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Geopolitics of a Post-Growth Europe: Rethinking Relations with the Global South?
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nRivalries between states or political entities for sovereignty over a territory or a resource are often enough to justify the development of (often commercial) armed forces and alliances. Geopolitics\, if it is to mean anything other than the analysis of this interplay of forces and influences\, would therefore affirm that no state would voluntarily reduce its economy at the risk of being overpowered by another one not willing to make this sacrifice. \nThis generality about international relations partly explains the expansion of empires throughout history\, and from this point of view\, the great European and industrial powers are doing nothing new by colonizing\, enslaving\, and establishing asymmetrical trade relations. \nWhat’s new\, however\, is that the intensity of the economic flows of industrial means of production is ravaging ecosystems and climatic balances. In other words\, the economic growth of the major powers (exploiting resources extending far beyond their sovereign territories) is unsustainable. \nIn response\, many intellectuals are striving to bring out a convincing macro-economic model of post-growth. These efforts are taking place when economic growth is slowing down\, or even stagnating\, and producing increasingly irreversible and lethal effects on the environment and people’s health. \nTheoretical models of post-growth postulate that it is possible to reduce the intensity of physical and economic flows while maintaining a satisfactory standard of living.  That is to say\, maintaining a “good standard of living” (with access for all to education\, healthcare\, leisure\, culture…) without using fossil fuels implies developing a large-scale renewable energy system\, which we know very well has a lower energy rate of return and requires large quantities of materials. \nIn any case\, the abandonment of fossil fuels and the development of a decarbonized\, non-growthiest economic model holds the seeds of new international relations and new balances of power. \n\nProject background\nThis event is part of GEF’s project Geopolitics of a Post-Growth Europe\, which explores the tensions between degrowth/post-growth and geopolitics. The project aims to ignite a conversation between critics of economic growth and progressive thinkers on foreign and security policy\, who now often operate in separate circuits. It aims to find solutions beyond naïve anti-militarism and convenient belief in green growth. Find out more about the project and its findings at geopoliticspostgrowth.eu.    \n\nPracticalities\nDate and Time: Friday\, July 7th (12:00 – 14:00 CEST)  \nLocation: Online\, via Zoom  \nLanguage: French  \nRegistration: This is a closed expert meeting. However\, if you wish to learn more or receive an invitation\, please get in touch with Kévin Puisieux via k.puisieux (at) fondationecolo.org.  \n\nThis expert meeting is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of the Fondation de l’Ecologie Politique and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:EGAT Latvia: 2023-2024 edition
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThe youth organization “Protests” in cooperation with the Freedom and Solidarity Fund announces applications for the summer camp “Young Activists Academy” or JAA! It will be a great opportunity for young people to get inspired and prepare for active participation in civil society. \nThe camp will be held on 25-27 in August near Kandava\, Latvia. It is organized as a part of “European Green Activists Training – Latvia”. “Young Activists Academy” will be a 3-day camp\, during which we will introduce young people with little or no activism experience to various NGOs and movements\, such as the Green Movement\, as well as inspire them to actively participate in civil society. We will identify local problems and find ways how we can solve them and become heard at the political level as well. We will learn how the European Union and its institutions work and how you\, as an individual\, can be heard in it. We will identify  the threats to European democracy and how we can prevent them while also promoting an inclusive\, feminist and green society. \nProject “JAA” is organized by the “Freedom and Solidarity Fund” in cooperation with the youth organization “Protests”. The project is funded by the Green European Foundation through the “European Green Activists training” project. \n  \nWho can apply?\nWe are looking for young people between the ages of 15 and 30 who speak and understand the Latvian language. We will give preference to younger young people from the regions of Latvia and/or with less experience of activism\, but we invite everyone who is interested in the topics raised to apply. \n  \nPractical information\n  \nThe camp will be held in Latvian. \nThere is no fee to participate. The organizers will pay the travel and accommodation costs of the participants. \nThe application is open until August 14 at 23.59! Apply by clicking here. \nAfter the summer camp\, there will also be a follow-up event\, where we will continue to develop and explore activism basing on the already built knowledge. Since this event is part of the “EGAT” project\, the camp participants will have the opportunity to go to Brussels next March for a 3-day training organized by the European Green Fund. \nIn case of questions\, contact the coordinator Marta Bogustova by email at marta.bogustova@hotmail.com. \nThe project is financed by the Green European Foundation within the framework of the “EGAT” project. \n  \n\nThis EGAT programme is organised by Green European Foundation with the support of Protests and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. \n

SUMMARY:Deliberative democracy in tackling climate justice? (Požega)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nDuring this lecture and discussion\, we will try to define some advantages and ambiguities of Deliberative Democracy when confronted with other participatory practices based on self-mobilisation\, as a leverage to discuss about “hybrid” practices and how they must be related to the pre-existing struggles in a territory\, and to the next-steps of decision making. A series of filed-of-contested-actions will emerge\, for opening space to the working groups for imagining solutions that can better relate mini-publics to maxi-publics\, and lay-and-expert knowledge. Leading questions will be formulated about what can we intend as justice (included epistemic justice)\, how can we tackle the asymmetries of information\, and avoiding to consider territories as a neutral ground on which a debate on a specific issues (for example: those related to energy) has to start from scratch. \n  \nProject background\nThe projects aims to explore the different levels and possibilities of citizen participation. Experiences from different countries are presented and discussed\, this summer school event being one oft them. \n  \nSpeakers\nGiovanni Allegretti\, Centre for Social Studies (CES) of the Coimbra University\, researcher on citizen participation in the management of territorial transformations and budgeting. \n  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 26th August 2023\, 10am-12am \nLocation: Osnovna skola Emilija Ostojic\, Knjaza Miloša 26\, Požega 31210\, Serbia \nLanguage:  The main languags of the event will be English. \n  \n\nThis EGAT programme is organised by Green European Foundation with the support of Institute of  Center for Green Politics and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:EGAT Czech Republic (Akumulátor): '23-'24 edition
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nSign up for Accumulator and become one of 15 young activists! You don’t need a CV full of experience. What’s important is the motivation to change things around you .During this programme\, you will explore different aspects of politics and activism with experts in green issues\, including journalists\, academics\, experts\, and politicians. We will awake your sense of initiative and support your skills in advocacy\, teamwork\, campaigning\, and work with the media. Together we will go through a whole range of approaches and tools that will help participants do their bit to change the world for the better. It is important for us to connect theory and practice. Besides practical skills\, we will focus on important cross-cutting themes such as climate change\, education\, feminism and more. \nIn addition\, you will become a member of a wide alumni network\, which includes all former participants who today are often engaged in activism\, politics and other exciting projects. Together we organize a big alumni weekend every summer where we get together to share our experiences. \nWe are starting this year’s Accumulator with a weekend at the end of October 2023\, in the spring of 2024 we will meet in Brussels with young people from Finland\, Lithuania\, Latvia\, Spain\, Poland and Croatia who are delving into similar programmes as the Accumulator. \n  \nParticipation Requirements\n\nYou are between 18 – 24 years (recommended)\nYou live in the Czech Republic (but you do not have to have permanent residence in the Czech Republic or Czech citizenship)\nYou are willing to be proactive and participative\nYou have to participate in ALL phases of the training: please check details below.\n\nIf there is any obstacle (for example financial\, or regarding health or language) that could prevent you from participating in the project\, let us know and we will adjust the program and conditions so that you can still participate. The accumulator is an open and inclusive space and all young people are welcome to apply despite their background. \nApply HERE by August 27! \n  \nCost\nOur goal is that all selected applicants are able to participate in the Accumulator\, regardless of financial possibilities. Nevertheless\, we ask for a solidarity fee to be able to fund all the activities. Please consider what your personal financial contribution possibilities are for the realization of the Accumulator. You can let us know the amount of your contribution when filling out the application form HERE. Please note that the amount of the contribution you are able to provide won’t influence the selection process. \n  \nProgram\nThe EGAT Akumulator consists of two weekend trainings and separate preparation for these trainings. It also includes a one-week study trip to Brussels\, which is preceded by the EU for Beginners e-learning course and a preparatory meeting that will take place over a day the week before the visit to Brussels. \n1. Accumulator\, 20 – 22 October 2023\, Veronici Centre\, Hoštětín \nSYSTEM ERROR: How to change it?\nDuring the first weekend\, we will get to know each other and decide how we want the entire Accumulator to work together. We will share our expectations\, fears\, experiences\, and motivations. In short\, we will try to create a safe environment for everyone to feel good and positive about the training.\nWe refer to the time in which we live in different ways. However\, the common denominator is often the word “crisis”. We are talking about a climate\, economic\, global\, energy crisis\, but also a crisis of imagination. During the first weekend training\, we will cover a little bit of all of the above. Through formal and non-formal education methods\, we will try to think together about how individual crises are related to each other and try to examine problems at system level. \nWith a focus on deepening the ability to think systemically\, we will try to understand the basic concepts that we will work with during the following weekends. We will talk\, for example\, about capitalism\, but also globalization and colonialism. \nAt the end of the weekend\, we should have a unified level of knowledge\, clarified shared values and a deepened ability to think systems. \n2. Accumulator\, November 24-26\, 2023\, ČSOP Hostel\, Vlašim \nENVIRONMENTAL MOVEMENT: From where and where? \nFrom theory to practice. First\, we will clarify the theoretical roots of political ecology\, then we dive into activist political practice. Who are the green actors? What and who is involved in the environmental movement? How to become part of the change? We will solve all this during the second weekend together with specific actors from environmental organizations and platforms\, for example Greenpeace\, Fridays for Future or Re-set. In addition to activism\, we will also explore the waters of politics with members of three political parties – Pirates\, Greens and Future. \nFinally\, we will focus on creating campaigns. What to watch out for? What is the good practice of well-known environmental organizations? \n3. Preparation for a study stay in Brussels\, March 2024\, one day (online or offline) \nThe main topic of the third weekend will be the European Union. The Impact Europe e-learning course will allow us not to have to deal with how the EU works all weekend\, and we can then go straight to a critical discussion about its pros and cons and the relationship between its policies and the policies of the Czech Republic. We will talk about how political processes at the national and European level can be realistically influenced. At this meeting\, which will take place online or offline\, we will share practical information about the study trip to Brussels. At the same time\, we will open here some of the topics that are dealt with at the European level by experts\, MEPs and activists that we will meet in Brussels. \n4. (BST – Brussels Study Trip) Study stay in Brussels\, spring 2024 \nEUROPEAN GREEN ACTIVIST’S TRAINING – EGAT \nAccumulator takes place in various forms simultaneously in Finland\, Croatia\, Spain\, the Czech Republic\, Poland\, Lithuania and Latvia. Participants from these countries will meet for a one-week excursion in Brussels to share knowledge from individual trainings and take a look behind the scenes at the activities of the institutions of the European Union. We will visit the European Parliament and meet people who work in various positions in Brussels. Even with several members of the European Parliament. \nBut Brussels is not only about the EU\, and we will have the chance to learn about local initiatives and how grassroots activism is done in a place where European politics intersects with Belgian politics. \n  \nWho will train me and how?\nNon-formal education lecturers Zuzana Kašparová and Miriam Macurová will guide you through the training and excursion to Brussels. Both have been active in the field of alternative education for several years and educate young people to take an active approach to public affairs. They themselves are socially engaged in the topics that will be discussed at the trainings. Both were members of the non-profit educational organization Be International. Zuzana is dedicated to the feminist project Vyhonit dábla\, she is the author of the program “Na zachodce” for CT\, she is involved in the activist crip collective and lectures on a freelance basis\, for example sex education or intercultural competence. Miriam works as a campaigner and expert on European climate policy at Greenpeace\, where she is also part of the environmental education program. The program is thus created on the basis of real experiences from the public space. \nThe program itself is based on meetings with people from practice\, i.e. politicians\, journalists\, experts and activists\, who will introduce the participants to politics and public events based on their experience. \nIn addition to workshops and guest lectures\, the program is based on informal education. His methods are based on working in groups with an emphasis on individual initiative. So what you get from the Accumulator depends on how much you put into the training. An important part of the educational process is the sharing of experiences and reflection. \nIn informal education\, they learn by experiencing and trying new things\, which not only leads to new information\, but also to the acquisition of practical skills and thinking about values. It is not graded\, it does not know the role of the teacher\, it is voluntary and the participants are themselves responsible for what they learn. \nDeveloping the ability to work in a group is essential for the Accumulator. Although everyone takes away newly acquired skills and knowledge\, we believe that the ability to collaborate collectively is crucial when trying to change the world around us and when involving other people in future activities. \n  \n\nThis EGAT programme is organised by Green European Foundation with the support of Institute of Active Citizenship and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. \n

SUMMARY:Geopolitics of Degrowth (Zagreb)
DESCRIPTION:About the conference\nA perspective on degrowth from the post-socialist semi-periphery of Croatia\, with a turbulent transition to capitalism in hindsight\, suggests that capitalist development can lead to dedevelopment\, depopulation and environmental degradation — making an alternative pathway into a just and sustainable future not only necessary but also politically desirable. \nAfter the Hague\, Manchester\, Malmö\, Budapest\, Leipzig\, Venice\, Barcelona and Paris\, the 9th International Degrowth Conference is taking place this summer in Zagreb. It will sit at the heart of a broader Zagreb Degrowth Week\, a free arts and conviviality festival realised in cooperation with neighbouring capitals. \n\nAbout GEF’s session\nIt makes sense for the EU to be a frontrunner in the transition to a degrowth society. This is a matter of ecological justice: EU countries bear the greatest historical responsibility for the crises of climate and biodiversity\, and can free up natural resources for the Global South without loss of wellbeing. But what would degrowth mean for geopolitics? Can a Europe that is the first to renounce economic growth still remain (or become) a global player? Will it be able to defend itself\, its allies\, democracy and the international rule of law against aggressive autocrats? After all\, the power of countries and alliances is largely determined by their wealth and military capabilities. Without billions in Western support\, both money and arms\, Ukraine would not be able to hold out against the Russian aggressor. This panel brings together policymakers\, experts and practitioners for a frank conversation on the geopolitical risks and opportunities for a degrowth Europe. What concepts\, alliances\, or alternative forms of power might answer to the challenge of combining ecological\, democratic\, and geopolitical resilience? \n  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 30.08.2023 at 6pm\nLocation: Zagreb\nVenue: Centar Mladih ribnjak – Center for Youth Ribnjak\, Park Ribnjak 1\, 10000\, Zagreb; room ZV-KC-2\nType: Non-academic Session

SUMMARY:Meet the Thinker: Helen Thompson (Brussels)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nIf fossil fuels have always been a matter of international struggle\, the transition to renewable energy will be no different. Energy will continue to define geopolitics. In this talk Helen Thompson explains how the energy transition to renewables can be described as revolutionary. Over a period of 30 years\, we will redraw the entire energy base of modern civilisation. Renewable energy sources require a lot of metals\, which are readily available in some parts of the world\, such as China. This brings with it new relationships and dynamics in world politics that will affect us all.  \nContext\nThis event is part of the Green European Foundation’s A Just Green Deal And Beyond project. The project looks into the social dimension of the European Green Deal (EGD) and what needs to be done so that social measures are embedded in Green Deal policies. So far\, it rests on a ‘compensation logic’ while we urgently need a holistic approach that integrates the social rights from the beginning. The energy transition is a crucial aspect in the EGD and will bring with it new relationships in world politics. If we don’t take into account social justice\, it will affect vulnerable groups the most. We need more geopolitical insight about the energy transition to be able to make it socially just.  \nSpeakers\nHelen Thompson\, British professor of Political Economy and author of the influential book Disorder: Hard Times in the 21st Century.\n  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 7th September\, 19:30-21:00  \nLocation: Bozar\, Brussels   \nLanguage: English    \nRegistration: Get your ticket here \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Oikos and in collaboration with Bozar. It is organised with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Geopolitics of Post-Growth
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nScientists increasingly doubt whether we can stop the climate and ecological crises as long as our economy continues to grow. So we had better prepare for a future without GDP growth. In fact\, the degrowth movement\, which is rapidly gaining popularity among activists and scientists\, advocates the deliberate scaling back of overproduction and overconsumption to bring the economy back into balance with the living world\, in a way that reduces inequality and improves human well-being. \nBut what would a farewell to economic growth mean for geopolitics? Can a European Union that is the first to enter the post-growth era remain (or become) a global player? Will it be able to defend itself\, its allies\, democracy\, and the international rule of law against aggressive autocrats? The transition to a post-growth society must be a democratic one. But that is far from obvious at a time when authoritarian regimes are invading or threatening their democratic neighbours. \nOn the plus side\, a post-growth EU might gain resilience. Without economic growth\, it will be easier for the EU to reduce its dependence on imported energy and raw materials. This favours strategic autonomy. It also provides an opportunity to move beyond the neo-colonial ‘extractivism’ that burdens relations with the global South. \nIn this webinar\, we will identify points of contention and try to develop commonalities. After some brief introductions\, there will be ample time for participants to have their say. \n\nSpeakers\n\nSophie Bloemen\, co-director Commons Network\nRoderick Kefferpütz\, director of the European Union office of the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung \nRichard Wouters\, project leader ‘Geopolitics of a post-growth Europe’ for GEF \n\nThe webinar will be moderated by Judith Sargentini\, former MEP for GroenLinks and CEO in the not-for-profit sector. \n\nPracticalities\nDate and Time: Friday\, 8 September (14:00 – 16:00 CEST)  \nLanguage: English  \nAudience: Public event online\, via Zoom    \nRegistration: Please register online via this link.  \nIn case of further questions\, contact project lead Richard Wouters – rwouters (at) groenlinks.nl  \n\nThis project is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Wetenschappelijk Bureau GroenLinks and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. SUMMARY:North-South Relations and the Post-Growth Challenge (Málaga)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThe Club of Rome report “The limits to growth” was published in 1972 . These 50 years have gradually confirmed the validity of the study. However\, despite the ever-closer risk of environmental and social collapse\, the main focus of the economy remains profit growth\, which is clearly unsustainable and profoundly unequal. In response to this crisis of the hegemonic socio-economic model\, the degrowth/post-growth movements advocate for an economic model that overcomes the ecological limits of the planet\, improves human well-being and reduces inequalities\, challenging the growth dogma. In Europe\, these movements are becoming increasingly popular among activists and scientists\, and the debate has even begun open up at the institutional level.         \nMoving away from growth may represent an opportunity for the EU to increase its resilience and reduce its energy and raw materials dependence. However\, this is something that undoubtedly poses important geopolitical and geostrategic challenges\, including that of North-South relations. How would the EU’s post-growth approach influence relations with the global South\, what would be the main tensions and synergies\, and what challenges will it face in establishing cooperative and equal relations with these countries? \nIn this expert meeting\, we will explore the advantages and also the challenges that the post-growth EU would face in its external relations with the Global South\, and more specifically with the African continent. To this end\, we will introduce into the equation the prospects of demographics and global population movements as a geopolitical factor\, and as an opportunity for European foreign policy to put human rights\, gender equality\, sustainability of life and care\, reduction of inequalities and a profound environmental transition at the centre.  \n  \nProject background\nThis event is part of GEF’s project Geopolitics of a Post-Growth Europe\, which explores the tensions between degrowth/post-growth and geopolitics. The project aims to ignite a conversation between critics of economic growth and progressive thinkers on foreign and security policy\, who now often operate in separate circuits. SUMMARY:Sustainable Cities (Budapes)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nIn the European Union\, 70% of the population lives in cities and therefore\,  80% of all GDP is also generated in cities. This concentration also brings forth numerous challenges\, including rising forced displacement\, traffic congestion\, and increased levels of noise and air pollution stemming from vehicular activities. EU cities have accumulated a wealth of experience in tackling these problems paving the way for the concept of compact cities. This training session welcomes all individuals interested in gaining insights into sustainable urban development\, exploring key considerations\, and understanding policy avenues for achieving sustainability. \n  \nProject background\nThis event is part of the Green European Foundation`s Green Political Activist Training Project.  We put together a series of trainings and seminars which aim to help participants to understand the concepts of political ecology and apply those to both local and European-level politics. We will examine policies and policy proposals on various levels\, hence\, local currents as well as the European Green Deal. Our goal is to prepare participants for both assessing and advocating policies in line with progressive green values. Moreover\,\, we aim to help young green activists by offering them tools and knowledge\, as well as an opportunity to network\, get in contact with political actors and experts on multiple levels and come together as a political community. It is essential for us to help like-minded movements and actors connect in order to help the political ecosystem flourish. \n  \nProgramme and Speakers\n9.30 – 10.00 – Arrival\, registration \n10.00 – 10.10 – Opening – \n10.10 – 11.10 – Péter Udvardi : The compact city\, sustainable urban planning \nSustainable mobility in the 21st century \n  \n11.10 – 11.20 Coffee break \n11.20 – 12.20 László Szilágyi: Urban air quality – new EU framework \nWaste management and circular economy \n  \n12.20 – 13.20 Lunch break \n13.20 – 13.50 Sándor Bardóczi:  Protecting urban green spaces \n  \n13.50 – 14.00 Coffee break \n14:00 – 14:30 Ada Ámon: 100 climate problems in 100 European cities \n  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 16th September\, 2023\,  9:30 am – 14:30 pm \nLocation:  Budapest \, Gödör Klub\, Budapest\, Király u. 50\, 1061 \nLanguage:  Hungarian \nRegistration: Please register here \n  \n\nThis training has been organised by the Green Europe Foundation with the support of Progressive Hungary Foundation and with the financial support of the European Parliament for the Green Europe Foundation.
