SUMMARY:Cities as Places of Hope (Brussels)
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nIf we look at the European Union today\, many things do not appear so bright: rising far right nationalism\, Brexit\, member States resisting alignment on policies concerning climate change or migration. \nHowever\, there is another\, more optimistic perspective of Europe: one that sees how hopeful movements are unfolding and where progressive cities\, together with their citizens\, are succeeding in developing future-orientated answers. \nCities are the social laboratories where new answers are designed\, tested and implemented. Think of local food policies\, cities full of bikes and public transport\, renewable energy systems. Those iniatives are embedded in cross-border networks\, sharing knowledge and experience\, aiming for a sustainable society that respects social and ecological boundaries. \nWe will welcome speakers at the forefront of these inspiring movements in cities\, to discuss and exchange on their experiences and best practices! \nProgramme\n16:00 Welcome \n16:10 Cities as places of hope in the EU: presentation of the GEF paper – Merlijn De Rijcke\, Oikos Think Tank + Q & A \n16:35 How a bold and progressive local mobility policy improved the living conditions of the residents of Ghent – Filip Watteeuw – Alderman of Mobility of the city of Ghent + Q & A \n17:05 Coffee break \n17:25 Agathe Cavicchioli\, Interim Head of City Diplomacy at C40 \n17:55 Municipal power – Vedran Horvat – Director of Institute for Political Ecology (Croatia) and GEF Board member + Q & A \n18:25 BEES Coop (TBC) – Brussels’ first participative supermarket + Q & A \n19:00 Networking drinks \nRegistration\nAttendance to this event is free\, please register your place via the form found here. \n\n

SUMMARY:Basic Income as a Tool Towards the Ecological Transition (Córdoba)
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nIn a society threatened by different and converging environmental and social crises\, Universal Basic Income has more and more support as an instrument to mitigate the great social inequalities that the economic system\, based on the infinite economic growth\, cannot solve. \nOn the contrary\, neoliberal capitalism is not only opening a widening gap between rich and poor countries\, but it is accentuating it within the countries themselves\, creating large pockets of poverty. Much has been written about UBI in relation to work\, freedom\, inequality\, gender\, but the ecological dimension has hardly been taken into account. For this reason we want to focus on the UBI-socio-environmental sustainability relationship. \nWould the implementation of a basic income have positive effects on the protection of the Planet? What would be its relationship with economic growth / degrowth? How would it affect consumption patterns? How should it be financed so that it can be an effective instrument for ecological transition? In this session we will try to answer these and many other questions and contribute to the debate on this forgotten but necessary and urgent aspect of Basic Income. \nThis event is part of the Basic Income – European Public Debate project and will take place at the Univerde: Capitalism in Front of the Mirror – the Socio-Environmental Response to a Predatory System\, \nSpeakers\n– Lucía Baratech – economist specialized in Ecological and Social Economics from the Vienna University of Economics. Member of the Basic Income Network. Consultant for Public Administration \n– Jorge Pinto – research associate at the Centre for Ethics\, Politics and Society University of Minho\, Portugal and co-founder of the Portuguese party LIVRE \n– Julen Bollain – economist and researcher\, member of the Basic Income Network and of the BIEN (Basic Income Earth Network). Member of the Basque Parliament by Elkarrekin Podemos \n\n

SUMMARY:Univerde: Capitalism in Front of the Mirror - the Socio-Environmental Response to a Predatory System (Córdoba)
DESCRIPTION:Event Background\nThe capitalist model of the 21st centuray has generated serious socio-evironmental crise\, chiefly those of climate change and the degradation of biodiversity. \nIn the face of these challenges and the worryingly low levels of concern and action on the social and political levels\, society must reflect on our future path to reverse the deterioration of the planet’s vital systems. SUMMARY:The Climate Emergency - how to build a bridge between scientific knowledge and the political and social reality? (Brussels)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nIn cooperation with transform europe and the Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS)\, the Green European Foundation (GEF) is organising a workshop at this year’s European Forum of Left\, Green and Progressive Forces\, taking place in Brussels. \nVarious cities all over the world have declared a climate emergency in the past months and for more than a year\, Fridays For Future and the Extinction Rebellion have been demonstrating and blocking traffic all over the world. At the same time\, governments seem to not be acting fast enough. \nIt is up to progressive political forces to take this climate emergency serious and find answers to urgent questions: how can we achieve a good\, a prosperous life for all now and in future? Moreover\, how can we rally the political majorities for the necessary transformation of our societies? Is it possible to channel the powerful wave of climate awareness to redress the economic growth paradigm that caused this emergency?  \nThe Green European Foundation\, transform europe\, and the Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS) will organise this workshop at the 3rd European Forum to share analyses and proposals on which differences might arise on specific policy solutions but also explore commonalities to stimulate political debate on the necessary way forward. \nSpeakers\n\nZuzana Pavelková\, human rights lawyer and climate activist\, former Co-Spokesperson of the Federation of Young European Greens (FYEG) 2018-2019\nAlexandra Lutz\, former president of CliMates and assistant in the European Parliament in the Greens/EFA group\nYann Le Lann\, Director Espaces Marx\nGitte Pedersen\, transform Denmark\nAnia Skrzypek\, Director of Research and Training\nCéline Charveriat\, Executive Director\, Institute for European Environmental Policy\n\nThe workshop will be moderated by Walter Baier\, Political Coordinator of transform!europe \nPracticalities\nFor more details on the programme\, visit www.europeanforum.eu.  \nTo register\, please send an email to marseilleforum2017@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Making Basic Income a European Reality (Tampere)
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nThe long lived dream of a basic income has gained relevance in Europe in the last few years. Changing working life and an uncertain economy has sparked the need for social security reforms in many countries. The Finnish basic income study has received world wide coverage. The goals have long been established but how do countries move forward to make it actually happen? Is a European BI possible? Should we approach BI incrementally? \nIn this seminar\, taking place at the 30th European Green Party Council\, guest speakers will discuss the status of basic income developments in different countries and outline paths to make the utopia a reality. Both national and Europe-wide points of view will be discussed. The seminar is a chance to spread ideas among the participants and help implement change across Europe. \nSpeakers\nVia video: Jamie Cooke\, The RSA Scotland \nPathways to a Basic Income in Scotland and the UK \nJane Millar\, University of Bath\, UK\nUniversal Credit: designing and implementing the UK’s new working-age benefit and how this differs from Basic Income \nKim Evangelista\, Belgian Green party (Ecolo)\nA Basic Income for the young: Inventing tomorrow’s solidarities \nLukas Korpelainen\, Visio – Finnish Green Think Tank\nA hybrid model for basic social security and the steps for the next 10 years in Finland \n  \nSpeaker Biographies\nJane Millar OBE\, FBA\, FAcSS is Professor of Social Policy in the Institute for Policy Research at the University of Bath\, UK. Her research interests include the design\, implementation and impact of social policy and comparative research on family policy\, social security and employment policy\, with particular reference to gender and changing family patterns. Her current research examines the impact of Universal Credit on couples\, focusing on labour market decisions and family budgeting. \nKim Evangelista is a policy advisor for the Belgian Green party (Ecolo). He is in charge of economic\, social and fiscal policies. He worked on a concrete Basic Income proposition included in the political program of the party for the May 2019 election. He studied economics and political sciences\, and was later a researcher in applied economics. He worked in both the private and public sector \nLukas Korpelainen is a research coordinator at the Finnish Green think tank Visio. Earlier this year he wrote a report on improving the basic social security system in Finland. The work includes a new model for a basic income combined with means-tested benefits and a realistic first step with economic simulations. He has also helped the Finnish Green party develop its social security policies. \nJamie Cooke is the head of The RSA Scotland and leads on the development of the RSA’s activity in Scotland\, through innovative partnerships\, projects and programmes. He is also a leading advocate\, writer\, and speaker on the subject of basic income. SUMMARY:Green Academy Winter Seminar - Degrowth Kaleidoscope: Real-Existing Utopia(s) (Plitvička Jezera)
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nThe Green European Foundation\, in cooperation with the Institute for Political Ecology\, the Open Society Initiative for Europe and the Heinrich Böll Stiftung – Prague office\, is organising the 3rd edition of the Green Academy Winter Seminar. \nThe seminar will focus on the ongoing debates around the Green New Deal and degrowth concepts and practices in the context of the climate emergency. Deeper avenues to be explored will look at the theoretical\, political and practical level and identify convergencies and conflicts. The seminar will allow for exchanges to develop strategies for concrete change and policies. \nParticipants will be introduced to “degrowth doughnut” visualisations\, underlining the cultural excesses and shortfalls in a democratic construction of a degrowth transition. \nA “kaleidoscopic” perspective of the movement and various interconnections and differences will explore specific sectors where degrowth can make a fundamental difference\, while also considering the significance of the emerging Green New Deal policies on both sides of the Atlantic. \nDemands for a socially just and planned transition need to be articulated precisely in order to head off reactionary responses to the climate emergency. And this we shall redesign as we go\, for the further Europeans slide into climate chaos without establishing a convivial sociality\, the more likely we are to contend with authoritarian and inegalitarian powers to which emergency conditions often give rise. \nThe politics of this historical dynamic – the actors\, alliances\, institutions and social processes creating degrowth transitions is the subject of lively debate in Europe and beyond\, shaping up right before our eyes. Given the fact that in 2020 Croatia will take over the EU Presidency\, we will aim to explore ways how our thinking and actions can become turning points for Europe to be able to take another course. \nProgramme\nFRIDAY 8th OF NOVEMBER \n15:00 DEPARTURE FROM ZAGREB (ORGANISED BUS TRANSPORT – PARKING NEXT TO MAIN TRAIN STATION (ACCROSS IMPORTANE CENTRE ENTRANCE) \n17:15 ARRIVAL TO HOTEL – CHECK-IN AND REGISTRATION \n18:00 WELCOME NOTE AND INTRODUCTION \nVedran Horvat\, IPE Zagreb\, Head/Board of Directors\, GEF \nNino Lejava\, HBS\, Head of Prague office \nJagoda Munić\, FoEE\, Director\, Bruxelles/GA program council \nDanijela Dolenec\, Faculty of Political Sciences\, Associate Professor\,Zagreb/GA program council \nPresentation of working groups: Clara Dellaire-Fortier\, Nikolina Rajković\, Andro Rilović\, Ajda Pistotnik \nEVENING CONVERSATION: ”DEGROWTH MOVEMENT\, THOUGHT AND ACTION IN THE MIDST OF CLIMATE COLLAPS” \nEvening conversation with Vincent Liegey\, Cargonomia\, Hungary/France \n20:00 DINNER \nSATURDAY 9TH OF NOVEMBER \n09:00 MORNING LECTURE – Tiziano Distefano \n”Social cohesion in the ecological transition” \n10:00 MORNING PANEL \nGREEN NEW DEAL AND DEGROWTH – REAL-EXISTING UTOPIAS IN ACTION \nWith: Sean Sweney (TUED)\, Pawel Wargan (DiEM25)\, Marija Bartl (UA)\, Jagoda Munić (FoEE) \nModerated by: Danijela Dolenec and Vedran Horvat \n11:30 COFFEE BREAK \n11:30 WORKING GROUPS 1 \n\nLABOR\, DEMOCRACY AND DEGROWTH (Clara Dallaire-Fortier & Nina Rajković with Dario Farcy\, Sean Sweney and Marija Bartl)\nDEGROWTH AND DEBT (Ajda Pistotnik with Mark Perreira and Tilman Hartley)\nDEGROWTH (&) MUNICIPALISM (Andro Rilović with Eugen Vuković\, Eleanor Finley\, Vincent Liegey)\n\n13:30 LUNCH BREAK & WALK \n17:30 WORKING GROUPS 2 \n\nLABOR\, DEMOCRACY AND DEGROWTH (Clara Dallaire Fortier & Nina Rajković with Dario Farcy\, Sean Sweney and Marija Bartl)\nDEGROWTH AND DEBT (Ajda Pistotnik with Mark Perreira and Tilman Hartley)\nDEGROWTH (&) MUNICIPALISM (Andro Rilović with Eugen Vuković\, Eleanor Finley\, Vincent Liegey)\n\n19:30 DINNER \n21:00 DONUTS AND WINE EVENING TALK ON SUSTAINABILITY ON EUROPEAN (SEMI)PERIPHERY – \n\nMladen Domazet \nClara Dallaire-Forter\nJenny Ufer\nBranko Ančić\n\nSUNDAY 10TH NOVEMBER \n09:00 MORNING LECTURE \nPetr Jiehlička\, Open University\, UK \nDegrowth lessons from the European East: self-provisioning\, sharing and the resilient food system \n10:00 WORKING GROUPS 3 \n\nLABOR\, DEMOCRACY AND DEGROWTH (Clara Dallaire Fortier & Nina Rajković with Dario Farcy\, Sean Sweney and Marija Bartl)\nDEGROWTH AND DEBT (Ajda Pistotnik with Mark Perreira and Tilman Hartley)\nDEGROWTH (&) MUNICIPALISM (Andro Rilović with Eugen Vuković\, Eleanor Finley\, Vincent Liegey)\n\n11:30 BREAK \n12:00 REPORTS FROM WORKING GROUPS \n12:30 Post-growth awakening for EU: positioning degrowth agenda and international cooperation on climate action within the context of EU Croatian Presidency \nModeration: Dražen Šimleša \n13:15 Closing \n13:30 Lunch \n14:30 Departure to Zagreb \n17:00 estimated arrival \n\nThis event is a cooperation between the Institute for Political Ecology\, the Green European Foundation\, the Open Society Initiative for Europe and the Heinrich Böll Stiftung Prague office\, with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:The Climate Crisis and the European Media (Prague)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nWhat is the role of the media in Europe in communicating the climate crisis? What needs to be changed? And how can this be achieved? These and other questions will guide our panel debate\, which takes place in prostor39 café and community centre\, and features contributions from MEPs\, activists\, and journalists. \nThey touch on a wide range of topics\, from ownership structures and oligarchisation of the media\, to fossil industry disinformation campaigns and the sometimes bizarre consequences of media emphasis on balancing content. Concerns are expressed\, but there is also room for hope and solutions. While the internet environment may be prone to opinion bubbles and misinformation\, it facilitates diversified news sources and can also give rise to social movements and allow for mobilization. For journalists\, informing people of the vital and indisputable science behind climate change is perhaps a way to defend the very need for their profession. \nThe panel debate marks another successful step in cooperation between Deník Referendum and the Green European Journal. \n  \nSpeakers\nThe panel will consist of two MEPs and two journalists. It will be moderated by Zuzana Vlasatá\, reporter and Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Denik Referendum\, and Laurent Standaert\, Editor-in-Chief of the Green European Journal. \nThe panel composition is as follows: \n\nBas Eickhout – Dutch MEP for GroenLinks and co-leading candidate for the European Green Party in the last European elections\nMarkéta Gregorová – Czech MEP for Česká pirátská strana (Czech Pirate Party) and member of the European Parliament Committee on International Trade\nAude Massiot – journalist from the international desk of the French daily Libération\nJosef Patočka\, climate reporter for Deník Referendum and co-founder of the grassroots anti-coal initiative Limity jsme my\n\n  \nPracticalities\nThis event is taking place in prostor39 in Prague. The panel and debate are all in English. It is free and open to the public\, with no pre-registration necessary.

SUMMARY:The Leading Role of Cities in Fighting Against Climate Change (Madrid)
DESCRIPTION:Event Background\nThe role of cities is gaining prominence in the fight against climate change. The extreme severity of the environmental crisis would require urgent and courageous decision taking and action by government institutions at national\, European and global levels\, in the short\, medium and long term\, but on the contrary\, the interference of economic powers is making this decision-making extremely slow and with little ambitious goals. \nThe municipalities\, as institutions closer to citizenship\, and citizen movements are getting many cities to take measures that are making them the forefront of the fight against climate change in the face of the paralysis of other institutions. \nAbout the Event\nThis round table discussion will take place as part of the GEF transnational project Cities as Places of Hope in the European Union. \nIt will allow the speakers and guests to listen to and exchange on the different experiences of European cities and analyse the role that citizens can play in fighting a global crisis that threatens us all. \nSpeakers\n\nInés Sabanés\, Councilor for More Madrid at the Madrid City Council\nJúlia López Ventura\, European Regional Director in C40\nRosa Fraga\, Architect. Administrative Coordinator of the Platform for a New Energy Model (Px1NME)\nDirk Holemans\, former Councilor of Ghent (Belgium)\, Director of the Think Tank Oikos\, member of the board of the Green European Foundation.\n\nPracticalities\nThis roundtable discussion is an open event. If you like to attend\, please register your interest by contacting our partner at info@fundacionequo.es. \n\nRound table organized by the Green European Foundation (GEF) with the support of Fundación EQUO and the collaboration of La Casa Encendida.  \n

SUMMARY:Climate Emergency – Raising Ambition (London)
DESCRIPTION:Event Background\nWith the consequences of climate change beinng increasingly perceptible through extreme weather events (both worldwide and in European countries)\, verifiable research is urgently needed to set targets and policies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions by the amount necessary to secure a livable environment. At the same time\, policies to reduce greenhouse emissions are often attacked for threatening existing jobs.  \nGEF’s transnational project “Strengthening Climate Targets\, Creating Local Climate Jobs” sets out to explore what greenhouse emissions reductions would mean in practical terms for our job markets and economies\, and whether jobs could be created in rural areas across Europe. Can both a safe and just economically sound life for all be achieved? To this end\, our project undertook research on the potential to create more climate jobs in three EU countries with diverse historic and economic prerequisites: United Kingdom\, Ireland and Hungary. In 2019 the project is expanding also to Poland.  \nAbout the Event: \nThis climate energy conference is a one-day event for those looking to act on the climate emergency.  What can local authorities and communities do?  What scale of change do we need to be looking at?  What could the benefits be for jobs and local economies?  How do we keep fossil fuels in the ground?  \nSpeakers:  \n\nAndrew Simms\, (Rapid Transition Alliance) – the Climate Emergency\nNadine Andrews\, (Green House) – Climate psychology & cultural shifts\nPaul Allen\, (Centre for Alternative Technology) – Zero Carbon Britain\nJonathan Essex and Peter Sims\, (Green House) – Climate Jobs\nSam Mason (PCS Union) – Need for a Just Transition\nFatima Ibrahim (IPPR Environmental Justice Commission) – Need for a Just Transition\nYves Marignac\, (Association négaWatt) – Europe-wide transition\nSimon Pickering (Councillor\, Stroud District Council) – Reducing in-house emissions\nPhilip Webber (formerly of Kirklees Council) – Street by street retrofit\nIan Christie (University of Surrey) – Widening the coalition\nAgamemnon Otero (Repowering London) – Renewable energy\nPage Dykstra (Community Supported Agriculture Network UK) – Land/Food Transition\nRobert Read (The A Team Foundation) – Land/Food Transition\nJohn Webb (Herts WithOut Waste) – Materials/Waste Transition\nNeil Pitcairn (United Kingdom Without Incineration Network) – Materials/Waste Transition\nStephen Joseph (Transport Policy Consultant) – Transport Transition\n\nProgramme:  \n10:00-10:30 – Registration & refreshment \n10:30 – Welcome and introductions – Natalie Bennett Green European Foundation\, Anne Chapman Green House\n– The Climate Emergency – Andrew Simms\n– Climate Psychology and cultural change – Nadine Andrews\n– Questions and discussion\n– Introduction to parallel sessions and workshops \n11:45 – Tea/ coffee break \n12:00 – Parallel sessions – Making a plan\n– Green New Deal and Just Transition – Fatima Ibrahim and Sam Mason\n– Climate Jobs – Jonathan Essex and Peter Sims\n– Zero Carbon plans – Paul Allen (Centre for Alternative Technology) and Yves Marignac (negaWatt) \n13:00 – Lunch and information/discussion tables on:\n– Reuse and recycling – Herts WithOut Waste & UKWIN\n– Sustainable and Active Transport – Stephen Joseph\,\n– Renewable energy – Repowering London\n– Food and farming – Community Supported Agriculture Network & Team A Foundation\n– Street by street retrofit – Philip Webber (formerly Kirklees council)\n– Local councils – Simon Pickering\, Stroud District Council \n14:30 – Workshops – Making it happen\n– Making an Action Plan – Simon Pickering\, with Jonathan Essex and Peter Simms\n– Identifying key enablers and blockers of a step change in emissions.\n– Widening the Coalition – Ian Christie\, Surrey Climate Commission\n– Establishing partnerships\, setting up a local climate commission and citizens assemblies. \n15:30 – tea/coffee break \n15:45 – Making change happen – Feed back from workshops and panel discussion chaired by Natalie Bennett \n17:00 – Conference Ends \nPracticalities: \nConference fee: £10 \nPlease register for this event via the form found here. \n\n
