SUMMARY:GEF at the European Forum (Madrid)
DESCRIPTION:  \nAbout the event\nThe European Forum is a unique space for the left\, greens and progressives to come together. This event allows like-minded political foundations to organise debates and discussions on key social and green topics. Within this context and in collaboration with Transform! Europe and FEPS\, GEF is organising two workshops on 11 November. \nGEF’s role in the European Forum will draw from our Knowledge Community: the Future of the EU’s Energy Project and our work on Post- and Degrowth. \n  \nProgramme\n9:30-11:30 The Role of the State   \nForging a socio-ecological welfare state defined by wellbeing within planetary boundaries could be the chance to face the polycrisis. Indeed\, our welfare states should ensure universal access to high-quality essential services such as clean\, affordable and energy-efficient housing and mobility\, as well as strengthened social protection systems that mitigate the devastating consequences of climate change and environmental degradation. A new socio-ecological state would have a responsibility in enabling policy frameworks so citizens everywhere can take into their stride the new challenges brought about by digital breakthroughs and the climate crisis. By implementing social policies that tackle socio-economic inequalities\, reduce our carbon emissions and limit our environmental impact\, socio-ecological welfare states stand the chance to improve people’s quality of life and strengthen their resilience to shocks.  \n  \n12:00-14:00 The Climate Dimension of the Future of the EU’s Energy Project \nThe current EU energy framework showed its weaknesses over the past couple of years – amidst crises. These uncovered problems with fossil fuel resource dependency\, as well as with dependences on single countries as such. They showed the missing links between EU energy policy and security/geopolitics. The polycrisis also showed the lack of social safeguards and consideration in the EU and MS energy policy\, it showed that the democracy dimension has been too much underlit\, and above all – it clearly showed that\, if the EU had doubled down on its clean energy transition a decade earlier\, it would have been much more resilient to what it is experiencing today.  Mitigating and adapting to climate change is in other words not solely extremely important in terms of avoiding climate damage and emergency\, but also has positive spillover effects on energy security\, and if done rightly on the social and democratic dimension of energy. So why isn’t it going faster? Panelists will be asked how to speed up the EU’s clean transition\, zooming in as well on the existing stumbling blocks and cross-cutting policy areas.  \n  \nSpeakers\nThe Role of the State   \n\n (Moderated by Kevin Le Merle\, FEPS) \nDiego Lopez Garrido\, Former Secretary of State for the European Union in the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation \nCornelia Hildebrandt\, co-president Transform ! Europe \nLéa Das Neves Bicho\, Political adviser to MEP Lamberts \nAjda Pistotnik\, Co-founder and Director\, Policy Lab (Slovenia) \nMarta Iglesias Lopéz\, International Action Director\, Movimiento Por La Paz \n\n The Climate Dimension of the Future of the EU’s Energy Project \n\n(Moderated by Taube Van Melkebeke\, GEF) \nDavide Panzeri\, ECCO\, Italian think tank on climate change \nEva García Sempere\, Environmental activists\, former MP and energy transition expert \nKevin Le Merle\, Analyst at the Foundation for European Progressive Studies\, FEPS \nSean Currie\, Co-spokesperson Federation of Young European Greens \n\n  \n  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 11th November \nLocation: Madrid \nLanguage:  The main languages of the event will be English\, Spanish and French. \nYou can read the full programme here. For more info\, get in touch with Taube Van Melkebeke \n  \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of with Transform! Europe \, FEPS and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. The European Parliament is not responsible for the content of this event.

SUMMARY:How Can Greens and Progressives Influence NATO?
DESCRIPTION:About the event: \nGreen and progressive parties across Europe have historically held a sceptical view towards NATO\, with many deeming such a military alliance incompatible with disarmament and a shift towards non-military solutions to international conflicts.   \nThe Russian war of aggression against Ukraine shifted some of these stances\, prompting extensive internal and external debates within the green movement\, particularly in Western and Northern Europe. These debates have cast a light on the desperate need for a green and progressive policy path within security and defence issues\, and revealed gaps that exist within green and progressive parties’ positions on military defence.   \nTo contribute to this crucial European debate\, GEF commissioned a report with the support of Cogito that maps out stances towards NATO across Europe\, explores how Greens and progressives can influence NATO\, and asks specific questions around topics like nuclear disarmament or focusing on European defence cooperation instead.   \nThis webinar will present some key findings of the working paper\, and discuss these questions further with a panel of interviewees.    \nProject background: \nWith a focus on the Eastern flank of Europe\, the 2022-2023 debates series seeks to enrich green and political ecology discourse. The series aim to provide spaces to hear the voices of green actors\, peace and security experts\, as well as partners from different regions. With the support of Cogito\, GEF is delving specifically into the question of NATO and anchoring the green movement’s debates on this topic within its many historical and geographical dimensions.  \nSpeakers:\n\nJacob Risberg\, Miljöpartiet de gröna \nAtte Harjanne\, Vihreät  \nMerle Spellerberg\, Bündnis 90/Die Grünen \nAndrés Ingi\, Píratar \nModerated by Sarah Bitamazire (report author) \n\nPracticalities: \nDate and Time: November 8th (20:30 – 22:00 CET)  \nLanguage: English    \nRegistration: This is an online event\, please register in advance via this link.  \n\nThis webinar is organised by the Green European Foundation\, with the support of Cogito and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Green Perspectives on European Security
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nDespite the ideals and the efforts of several generations to stop wars\, the reality is that armed conflicts are still ravaging societies worldwide. Besides the most brutal war affecting the youth in Europe\, the Russian invasion of Ukraine\, armed conflicts continue to rise in South Caucasus\, Turkey\, and the Balkans. While the Green movement is rooted in non-violence and pacifism\, it’s also vaguely defined and understood within and outside the Green movement. These principles are also easier to defend in peaceful times. However\, these conflicts and the aspects of life (such as energy\, infrastructure\, food\, housing) once again remind us that we need to have a better definition of non-violence\, pacifism\, peace\, security\, and stability. During this Study Session\, the green youth of Europe will consider these issues and discuss them with the experts directly working on and around the impacts of these conflicts on energy security\, digital security\, propaganda\, media\, freedom of speech\, and civil society activities. \n  \nProject background\nThis event is a part of Green European Foundation’s Green Visions on European Security project\, which aims to explore how the Greens could adopt the necessary tools to understand contemporary conflicts and develop mechanisms to anticipate\, respond\, and terminate them. By facilitating a frank discussion on key tension points and vacuums\, across historical\, geographical\, and national sensitivities\, and with political ecology values at its core\, GEF and its partners contribute to the green movement’s reflections and anchoring of an updated vision on security and defence. \n  \nProgramme and Speakers:\n10:00 – 11:30      Session on Energy Security \n\nOlena Rutkovska – project manager for Ukrainian NGO Khmelnitsky Energy Cluster\nMorgan Henley – EU heating sector decarbonisation campaigner at Bankwatch\n\n12:00 – 13:30     Session on Democracy & Civil Society in Ensuring Security \n\nBalin Mikola – research fellow at the Democracy Institute of Central European University\n\n15:00 – 16:30    Workshop on Media Security & Propaganda \n\nIryna Zemlyana – media expert at the Institute for Mass Information\n\n17:00 – 18:30    Session on Digital Security \n\nAnastasiya Zhyrmont – campaigner for Eastern Europe and Central Asia at Access Now\n\n20:30 – 22:00  Forum on Sharing Experiences \n  \nPracticalities:\nDate and Time: 27th October (10:00-22:00) \nLocation: European Youth Center Budapest \nLanguage:  The main language of the event will be English. \nRegistration: Registration is now closed\, but links will be provided for the streams of some sessions. \n\n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation\, with the support of Cooperation and Development Network Eastern Europe\, as well as the Federation of Young European Greens and the European Youth Centre Budapest. SUMMARY:Anticipating the Climate Collapse (Barcelona)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThe future we predicted is unfolding before us. Devastating climate changes have resulted from pushing the planet to unprecedented limits. We must continue to fight to reverse the effects we have\, unfortunately\, already provoked. But in the meantime\, we are living with climate changes that are here to stay. What can we do about it? How can we fight increasingly hot summers in our cities? How can we ensure the protection of the natural environment\, so that deforestation and mistreatment do not continue? How can we live comfortably without damaging natural and energy resources? What can we do to ensure that our children live in a less polluted environment? How can we help young people who suffer from climate anxiety? How can we continue fighting and prevent ourselves from succumbing to inaction and helplessness? \nContext\nGEF’s Green Red Dialogues\, organised with the support of Fundació Nous Horitzons\, aim to tackle pressing issues of our time and the challenges Europe faces with an explicit social and green lens. From COVID-19 to the war in Ukraine\, far right resurgence to feminist struggles – these issues tend to reverberate across multiple countries and domains. Through the dialogues\, we connect the red and the green and highlight Southern European perspectives on crucial topics and developments across the continent.  \nSpeakers\n\nFrancesc Mauri – Weather Forecaster\nJúlia Boada – Member of the Spanish Congress\, former Political Advisor to the European Greens\,\nLlorenç Serrano – Just Transition manager (CCOO Catalonia)\nMercè Conangla– Psychologist\n\nPracticalities\nDate and time: Thursday\, December 15th\, 18:00 – 19:30  \nLocation: Espai Assemblea of CCOO (Via Laietana\, 16 Barcelona) \nLanguage: The main languages of this event will be Catalan and English. \nRegistration: Please register in advance via this link.  \n  \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Fundacio Nous Horitzons and the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:Green Political Activist Training - Sustainable Energy Politics (Budapest)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThis event is divided into different sections. The first part of the workshop will cover the basics of EU energy policy and climate policy nexus.  It will also look at Hungary’s energy policy objectives\, compliance with EU targets\, and current investments\, with a particular focus on the construction of Paks2. \nThe part\, will look at current energy policy developments. What determines the price of energy commodities\, what can be expected in the near future\, how will the war in Ukraine and inflation affect energy conditions? \nFor the third part\,  we will analyse the EU’s renewable energy targets and the current developments in Hungary: solar and wind energy\, the potential of geothermal energy. The speaker in this section will analyse the chances of a green transition at EU and national level. We will continue familiarising ourselves with the role of statistics in the field of energy politics\, and then we will turn to the following topics: \n\nEU Clean Energy Package (CEP)\nThe possibilities of the Hungarian CEP implementation\nThe solidarity economy paradigm and the possibilities of creating energy communities\nThe development of energy community financing\nCooperative principles.\n\nThe event will close with an analysis on the potential of energy efficiency. \n  \nProject background\nThis event is part of the Green European Foundation’s Green Political Activist Training Project. We put together a series of learning activities aiming to help participants to understand the concepts of political ecology and apply them to both local and European-level politics. We will examine various policies and policy proposals ranging from local politics to the European Green Deal. Our goal is to prepare participants for both assessing and advocating policies in line with progressive green values. We’ll also provide young green activists with them tools and knowledge\, as well as an opportunity to network\, get in contact with political actors and experts on multiple levels and come together as a political community. It is essential for us to help like-minded movements and actors connect in order to help the political ecosystem flourish. \n  \nSpeakers\n\nBenedek Jávor\, Green European Foundation Board Member\nRosa Martinex\, Green European Journal Board Member\nBalázs Felsmann\, Regional Centre for Energy Policy Research\nNóra Feldmár\, Habitat for Humanity\nZsolt Balajti\, expert on energy industry\nBéla Munkácsy\, Eötvös Loránd University & World Wildlife Forum\nMárton Fabók\, Solidarity Economy Center\n\n  \nProgramme\n9:30 – 10:00 Arrival\, registration \n10:00 – 10:10 Opening – Rosa Martinez on the EU energy architecture \n10:10 – 10:50 Benedek Jávor: Hungary’s sustainable energy policy – how are EU commitments being met? \n10:50 – 11:30 Balázs Felsmann: Current situation on the energy market\, availability of energy resources\, energy prices (tbc) \n11:30 – 11:40 Coffee break \n11:40 – 12:20 Béla Munkácsy: Situation of renewable energy use – EU overview \n12:20 – 12:50 Lunch break \n12:50 – 13:30 Nóra Feldmár: Energy poverty\, social issues \n13:30 – 14:10 Márton Fabók: Energy self-determination\, energy communities \n14:10 – 14:50 Zsolt Balajti: The potential of energy efficiency (tbc) \n14:50 – 15:20 Discussion \n  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time:  14th October\, 2023\,  9:30 am – 15:30 pm \nLocation: Budapest. SUMMARY:Geopolitics of Degrowth in a Conflicted Europe (Leipzig)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nGreen policies that respect planetary boundaries and allow the Global South to develop seem incompatible with unlimited economic growth in the EU. We need a realistic scenario for a future in which we consume more sparingly but live better together. A scenario that could be possible within a degrowth context. \nThe war in Ukraine completely changed the geopolitical landscape. Today\, the idea of ending GDP growth in the EU encounters new and important impediments\, with power and wealth being measured in military capacity. Can a degrowth Europe build strength and resilience in this context? \nTo tackle this issue\, the Green European Foundation with the support of BlueLink is organising a workshop in Leipzig\, as part of a series of expert meetings across Europe. The outcomes from these meetings and further research and interviews will feed into a final publication to be launched in the autumn of 2023. \nWe invite researchers\, activists and policy makers – particularly from Central and Eastern Europe and Ukraine – with an interest in green policies and geopolitics to present perspectives\, experiences\, analytical or activity reports and to engage in a discussion around the following questions: \n\nHow does degrowth within the EU affect the EU’s ability to achieve geopolitical objectives like providing security\, and what are the resulting tensions and synergies?\nCan such tensions be mitigated? If so\, how?\nHow would it be possible to optimize the possibilities that degrowth offers\, including for democratic flourishing and a safer Europe and world?\n\nNot every question has a definitive answer and we promote creativity\, analytical thinking\, and a fresh approaches to the challenge. \nProject Background\nThis event is part of GEF’s project Geopolitics of a Post-Growth Europe\, which explores the tensions between degrowth/post-growth and geopolitics. The project aims to ignite a conversation between critics of economic growth and progressive thinkers on foreign and security policy\, who now often operate in separate circuits. It aims to find solutions beyond naïve anti-militarism and convenient belief in green growth. Find out more about the project and its findings at geopoliticspostgrowth.eu. \nPracticalities\nThis GEF workshop will take place as part of the International Roundtable 2023 held by the Peaceful Revolution Foundation in Leipzig. You can find out more information about this conference here.  \nDate and time: October 11th\, 2023 (14:30 CET)  \nLocation: Leipzig\, Germany and online (hybrid event)  \nLanguage: English  \nRegistration: Open to all interested participants\, but please register in advance via this link. Please use the ‘Questions and Comments’ field to specify your scope of interest or proposed intervention. You will receive a confirmation email after registration.  \nIn case you want to attend the workshop in person in Leipzig\, please also email office@bluelink.net by Friday\, October 6th.   \n  \n\nThis event is organized by the Green European Foundation with the support of BlueLink. It will take place as part of the Revolutionale International Round Table 2023 held in Leipzig by the Peaceful Revolution Foundation.   \n

SUMMARY:GEF at the Budapest Forum
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThe Budapest forum is an annual event organised by the Municipality of Budapest\, Political Capital\, and CEU Democracy Institute to push forward the ‘Building [of] Sustainable Democracies’. You can find more information on the programme and speakers here. \nThe European Energy Governance is a critical component for building and sustaining democratic systems in the EU. The way we envisage our energy systems impacts the very fabric of our societies and\, therefore\, our common future as Europeans. The war of aggression in Ukraine and the numerous turbulences in the global economic and geopolitical landscape have stressed more than ever the consequences the European energy policy implementation. The wide-ranging impacts extend beyond energy procurement and security\, encompassing democracy\, environmental sustainability\, and social justice. \nThe current EU energy framework showed its weaknesses over the past couple of years amidst the polycrisis. These uncovered issues\, ranging from fossil fuel resource dependency to dependences on single countries. It thereby showed the missing links between EU energy policy and security. The polycrisis also showed the lack of social safeguards and consideration in the EU and energy policy. It showed that the democracy dimension has been severely neglected. And above all\, it showed that if the EU had doubled down on its clean energy transition at least a decade earlier\, it would have been much more resilient than it is today. \nGEF will tackle the future of the EU’s energy project as part of the Budapest Forum with a panel entitled Tomorrow’s Europe – replacing energy at the centre of the European political and democratic project\, building on GEF’s Knowledge Community: the Future of the EU’s Energy Project. \n  \nSpeakers\n\nJesse Scott- Research Fellow at the German Institute for Economic Research.\nStéphane Bourgeois-Leader of Collaborative Low Energy Vision for the European Region and European Relations and Policy Manager at NégaWatt Association.\nRosa Martínez Rodríguez-  Board member of the Green European Journal\, member of the political ecology think tank Ecopolítica\, and Former Green member of the Spanish Parliament.\nEero Yrjö-Koskinen-\, executive Director of the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP).\nBenjamin Denis- Senior Policy advisor and Head of industrial policy coordination at industriAll Europe.\n\nModerated by Taube Van Melkebeke- Policy Mnaager (Green European Foundation) \n  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 11th – 12th October \nLocation: online and CEU\, Nador 15\, Budapest \nLanguage:  The main languages of the event will be English. \nRegistration: Please find the link to online and on site registration here You can read the full programme here. \n  \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of City of Budapest\, Political Capital Institute\, CEU Democracy Institute and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. SUMMARY:Vienna Feminist Climate Conference / Feministische Klimakonferenz
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nWomen are taking a strong and successful stand to curb the climate crisis. In many countries\, the climate movement has female faces. However\, neither the causes and impacts nor the efforts to find solutions are equally distributed among women and men. A recent analysis by the aid organization CARE with data from more than 100 countries shows that 150 million more women are affected by the hunger crisis than men – due to impacts of climate change and the biodiversity crisis\, the Corona pandemic and the war in Ukraine. Food security declines as gender inequality grows. Globally\, inequality has risen (again) in the past three years. \nBased on these findings\, it is high time for a second Feminist Climate Conference – in order to raise awareness of the range and interconnections of the effects outlined above and to continue working on the development of long-term solution models. All crises are causally or impactfully interconnected. Holistic approaches to solutions are therefore a top priority. In the framework of the conference\, the Green European Foundation is organising the evening event From Grassroots to City Halls. Talk with feminist and ecological urban visionaries\,  giving space to female thinkers\, creators and activists from different European towns to share their experience. \nSpeakers & Programme\n9:00 Arrival (day programme organised by Grünen Bildungswerkstatt Wien) \n9:30 Welcome words by organisers \n\nJudith Pühringer (Stadträtin\, Parteivorsitzende Grüne Wien)\nElisabeth Kittl (Bundesrätin\, Obfrau Grüne Bildungswerkstatt Wien)\nMeri Disoski (Nationalrätin\, Grüne Frauensprecherin)\nJulia Schriffl (stellv. SUMMARY:Sustainable Cities (Budapes)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nIn the European Union\, 70% of the population lives in cities and therefore\,  80% of all GDP is also generated in cities. This concentration also brings forth numerous challenges\, including rising forced displacement\, traffic congestion\, and increased levels of noise and air pollution stemming from vehicular activities. EU cities have accumulated a wealth of experience in tackling these problems paving the way for the concept of compact cities. This training session welcomes all individuals interested in gaining insights into sustainable urban development\, exploring key considerations\, and understanding policy avenues for achieving sustainability. \n  \nProject background\nThis event is part of the Green European Foundation`s Green Political Activist Training Project.  We put together a series of trainings and seminars which aim to help participants to understand the concepts of political ecology and apply those to both local and European-level politics. We will examine policies and policy proposals on various levels\, hence\, local currents as well as the European Green Deal. Our goal is to prepare participants for both assessing and advocating policies in line with progressive green values. Moreover\,\, we aim to help young green activists by offering them tools and knowledge\, as well as an opportunity to network\, get in contact with political actors and experts on multiple levels and come together as a political community. It is essential for us to help like-minded movements and actors connect in order to help the political ecosystem flourish. \n  \nProgramme and Speakers\n9.30 – 10.00 – Arrival\, registration \n10.00 – 10.10 – Opening – \n10.10 – 11.10 – Péter Udvardi : The compact city\, sustainable urban planning \nSustainable mobility in the 21st century \n  \n11.10 – 11.20 Coffee break \n11.20 – 12.20 László Szilágyi: Urban air quality – new EU framework \nWaste management and circular economy \n  \n12.20 – 13.20 Lunch break \n13.20 – 13.50 Sándor Bardóczi:  Protecting urban green spaces \n  \n13.50 – 14.00 Coffee break \n14:00 – 14:30 Ada Ámon: 100 climate problems in 100 European cities \n  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 16th September\, 2023\,  9:30 am – 14:30 pm \nLocation:  Budapest \, Gödör Klub\, Budapest\, Király u. 50\, 1061 \nLanguage:  Hungarian \nRegistration: Please register here \n  \n\nThis training has been organised by the Green Europe Foundation with the support of Progressive Hungary Foundation and with the financial support of the European Parliament for the Green Europe Foundation.

SUMMARY:North-South Relations and the Post-Growth Challenge (Málaga)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThe Club of Rome report “The limits to growth” was published in 1972 . These 50 years have gradually confirmed the validity of the study. However\, despite the ever-closer risk of environmental and social collapse\, the main focus of the economy remains profit growth\, which is clearly unsustainable and profoundly unequal. In response to this crisis of the hegemonic socio-economic model\, the degrowth/post-growth movements advocate for an economic model that overcomes the ecological limits of the planet\, improves human well-being and reduces inequalities\, challenging the growth dogma. In Europe\, these movements are becoming increasingly popular among activists and scientists\, and the debate has even begun open up at the institutional level.         \nMoving away from growth may represent an opportunity for the EU to increase its resilience and reduce its energy and raw materials dependence. However\, this is something that undoubtedly poses important geopolitical and geostrategic challenges\, including that of North-South relations. How would the EU’s post-growth approach influence relations with the global South\, what would be the main tensions and synergies\, and what challenges will it face in establishing cooperative and equal relations with these countries? \nIn this expert meeting\, we will explore the advantages and also the challenges that the post-growth EU would face in its external relations with the Global South\, and more specifically with the African continent. To this end\, we will introduce into the equation the prospects of demographics and global population movements as a geopolitical factor\, and as an opportunity for European foreign policy to put human rights\, gender equality\, sustainability of life and care\, reduction of inequalities and a profound environmental transition at the centre.  \n  \nProject background\nThis event is part of GEF’s project Geopolitics of a Post-Growth Europe\, which explores the tensions between degrowth/post-growth and geopolitics. The project aims to ignite a conversation between critics of economic growth and progressive thinkers on foreign and security policy\, who now often operate in separate circuits. It aims to find solutions beyond naïve anti-militarism and convenient belief in green growth. SUMMARY:Geopolitics of Post-Growth
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nScientists increasingly doubt whether we can stop the climate and ecological crises as long as our economy continues to grow. So we had better prepare for a future without GDP growth. In fact\, the degrowth movement\, which is rapidly gaining popularity among activists and scientists\, advocates the deliberate scaling back of overproduction and overconsumption to bring the economy back into balance with the living world\, in a way that reduces inequality and improves human well-being. \nBut what would a farewell to economic growth mean for geopolitics? Can a European Union that is the first to enter the post-growth era remain (or become) a global player? Will it be able to defend itself\, its allies\, democracy\, and the international rule of law against aggressive autocrats? The transition to a post-growth society must be a democratic one. But that is far from obvious at a time when authoritarian regimes are invading or threatening their democratic neighbours. \nOn the plus side\, a post-growth EU might gain resilience. Without economic growth\, it will be easier for the EU to reduce its dependence on imported energy and raw materials. This favours strategic autonomy. It also provides an opportunity to move beyond the neo-colonial ‘extractivism’ that burdens relations with the global South. \nIn this webinar\, we will identify points of contention and try to develop commonalities. After some brief introductions\, there will be ample time for participants to have their say. \n\nProject background\nThis event is part of GEF’s project Geopolitics of a Post-Growth Europe\, which explores the tensions between degrowth/post-growth and geopolitics. The project aims to ignite a conversation between critics of economic growth and progressive thinkers on foreign and security policy\, who now often operate in separate circuits. SUMMARY:Meet the Thinker: Helen Thompson (Brussels)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nIf fossil fuels have always been a matter of international struggle\, the transition to renewable energy will be no different. Energy will continue to define geopolitics. In this talk Helen Thompson explains how the energy transition to renewables can be described as revolutionary. Over a period of 30 years\, we will redraw the entire energy base of modern civilisation. Renewable energy sources require a lot of metals\, which are readily available in some parts of the world\, such as China. This brings with it new relationships and dynamics in world politics that will affect us all.  \nContext\nThis event is part of the Green European Foundation’s A Just Green Deal And Beyond project. The project looks into the social dimension of the European Green Deal (EGD) and what needs to be done so that social measures are embedded in Green Deal policies. So far\, it rests on a ‘compensation logic’ while we urgently need a holistic approach that integrates the social rights from the beginning. The energy transition is a crucial aspect in the EGD and will bring with it new relationships in world politics. If we don’t take into account social justice\, it will affect vulnerable groups the most. We need more geopolitical insight about the energy transition to be able to make it socially just.  \nSpeakers\nHelen Thompson\, British professor of Political Economy and author of the influential book Disorder: Hard Times in the 21st Century.\n  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 7th September\, 19:30-21:00  \nLocation: Bozar\, Brussels   \nLanguage: English    \nRegistration: Get your ticket here \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Oikos and in collaboration with Bozar. SUMMARY:Geopolitics of Degrowth (Zagreb)
DESCRIPTION:About the conference\nA perspective on degrowth from the post-socialist semi-periphery of Croatia\, with a turbulent transition to capitalism in hindsight\, suggests that capitalist development can lead to dedevelopment\, depopulation and environmental degradation — making an alternative pathway into a just and sustainable future not only necessary but also politically desirable. \nAfter the Hague\, Manchester\, Malmö\, Budapest\, Leipzig\, Venice\, Barcelona and Paris\, the 9th International Degrowth Conference is taking place this summer in Zagreb. It will sit at the heart of a broader Zagreb Degrowth Week\, a free arts and conviviality festival realised in cooperation with neighbouring capitals. \n\nAbout GEF’s session\nIt makes sense for the EU to be a frontrunner in the transition to a degrowth society. This is a matter of ecological justice: EU countries bear the greatest historical responsibility for the crises of climate and biodiversity\, and can free up natural resources for the Global South without loss of wellbeing. But what would degrowth mean for geopolitics? Can a Europe that is the first to renounce economic growth still remain (or become) a global player? Will it be able to defend itself\, its allies\, democracy and the international rule of law against aggressive autocrats? After all\, the power of countries and alliances is largely determined by their wealth and military capabilities. Without billions in Western support\, both money and arms\, Ukraine would not be able to hold out against the Russian aggressor. This panel brings together policymakers\, experts and practitioners for a frank conversation on the geopolitical risks and opportunities for a degrowth Europe. What concepts\, alliances\, or alternative forms of power might answer to the challenge of combining ecological\, democratic\, and geopolitical resilience? \n  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 30.08.2023 at 6pm\nLocation: Zagreb\nVenue: Centar Mladih ribnjak – Center for Youth Ribnjak\, Park Ribnjak 1\, 10000\, Zagreb; room ZV-KC-2\nType: Non-academic Session

SUMMARY:EGAT Czech Republic (Akumulátor): '23-'24 edition
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nSign up for Accumulator and become one of 15 young activists! You don’t need a CV full of experience. What’s important is the motivation to change things around you .During this programme\, you will explore different aspects of politics and activism with experts in green issues\, including journalists\, academics\, experts\, and politicians. We will awake your sense of initiative and support your skills in advocacy\, teamwork\, campaigning\, and work with the media. Together we will go through a whole range of approaches and tools that will help participants do their bit to change the world for the better. It is important for us to connect theory and practice. Besides practical skills\, we will focus on important cross-cutting themes such as climate change\, education\, feminism and more. \nIn addition\, you will become a member of a wide alumni network\, which includes all former participants who today are often engaged in activism\, politics and other exciting projects. Together we organize a big alumni weekend every summer where we get together to share our experiences. \nWe are starting this year’s Accumulator with a weekend at the end of October 2023\, in the spring of 2024 we will meet in Brussels with young people from Finland\, Lithuania\, Latvia\, Spain\, Poland and Croatia who are delving into similar programmes as the Accumulator. \n  \nParticipation Requirements\n\nYou are between 18 – 24 years (recommended)\nYou live in the Czech Republic (but you do not have to have permanent residence in the Czech Republic or Czech citizenship)\nYou are willing to be proactive and participative\nYou have to participate in ALL phases of the training: please check details below.\n\nIf there is any obstacle (for example financial\, or regarding health or language) that could prevent you from participating in the project\, let us know and we will adjust the program and conditions so that you can still participate. The accumulator is an open and inclusive space and all young people are welcome to apply despite their background. \nApply HERE by August 27! \n  \nCost\nOur goal is that all selected applicants are able to participate in the Accumulator\, regardless of financial possibilities. Nevertheless\, we ask for a solidarity fee to be able to fund all the activities. Please consider what your personal financial contribution possibilities are for the realization of the Accumulator. You can let us know the amount of your contribution when filling out the application form HERE. Please note that the amount of the contribution you are able to provide won’t influence the selection process. \n  \nProgram\nThe EGAT Akumulator consists of two weekend trainings and separate preparation for these trainings. It also includes a one-week study trip to Brussels\, which is preceded by the EU for Beginners e-learning course and a preparatory meeting that will take place over a day the week before the visit to Brussels. \n1. Accumulator\, 20 – 22 October 2023\, Veronici Centre\, Hoštětín \nSYSTEM ERROR: How to change it?\nDuring the first weekend\, we will get to know each other and decide how we want the entire Accumulator to work together. We will share our expectations\, fears\, experiences\, and motivations. In short\, we will try to create a safe environment for everyone to feel good and positive about the training.\nWe refer to the time in which we live in different ways. However\, the common denominator is often the word “crisis”. We are talking about a climate\, economic\, global\, energy crisis\, but also a crisis of imagination. During the first weekend training\, we will cover a little bit of all of the above. Through formal and non-formal education methods\, we will try to think together about how individual crises are related to each other and try to examine problems at system level. \nWith a focus on deepening the ability to think systemically\, we will try to understand the basic concepts that we will work with during the following weekends. We will talk\, for example\, about capitalism\, but also globalization and colonialism. \nAt the end of the weekend\, we should have a unified level of knowledge\, clarified shared values and a deepened ability to think systems. \n2. Accumulator\, November 24-26\, 2023\, ČSOP Hostel\, Vlašim \nENVIRONMENTAL MOVEMENT: From where and where? \nFrom theory to practice. First\, we will clarify the theoretical roots of political ecology\, then we dive into activist political practice. Who are the green actors? What and who is involved in the environmental movement? How to become part of the change? We will solve all this during the second weekend together with specific actors from environmental organizations and platforms\, for example Greenpeace\, Fridays for Future or Re-set. In addition to activism\, we will also explore the waters of politics with members of three political parties – Pirates\, Greens and Future. \nFinally\, we will focus on creating campaigns. What to watch out for? What is the good practice of well-known environmental organizations? \n3. Preparation for a study stay in Brussels\, March 2024\, one day (online or offline) \nThe main topic of the third weekend will be the European Union. The Impact Europe e-learning course will allow us not to have to deal with how the EU works all weekend\, and we can then go straight to a critical discussion about its pros and cons and the relationship between its policies and the policies of the Czech Republic. We will talk about how political processes at the national and European level can be realistically influenced. At this meeting\, which will take place online or offline\, we will share practical information about the study trip to Brussels. At the same time\, we will open here some of the topics that are dealt with at the European level by experts\, MEPs and activists that we will meet in Brussels. \n4. (BST – Brussels Study Trip) Study stay in Brussels\, spring 2024 \nEUROPEAN GREEN ACTIVIST’S TRAINING – EGAT \nAccumulator takes place in various forms simultaneously in Finland\, Croatia\, Spain\, the Czech Republic\, Poland\, Lithuania and Latvia. Participants from these countries will meet for a one-week excursion in Brussels to share knowledge from individual trainings and take a look behind the scenes at the activities of the institutions of the European Union. We will visit the European Parliament and meet people who work in various positions in Brussels. Even with several members of the European Parliament. \nBut Brussels is not only about the EU\, and we will have the chance to learn about local initiatives and how grassroots activism is done in a place where European politics intersects with Belgian politics. \n  \nWho will train me and how?\nNon-formal education lecturers Zuzana Kašparová and Miriam Macurová will guide you through the training and excursion to Brussels. Both have been active in the field of alternative education for several years and educate young people to take an active approach to public affairs. They themselves are socially engaged in the topics that will be discussed at the trainings. Both were members of the non-profit educational organization Be International. Zuzana is dedicated to the feminist project Vyhonit dábla\, she is the author of the program “Na zachodce” for CT\, she is involved in the activist crip collective and lectures on a freelance basis\, for example sex education or intercultural competence. Miriam works as a campaigner and expert on European climate policy at Greenpeace\, where she is also part of the environmental education program. The program is thus created on the basis of real experiences from the public space. \nThe program itself is based on meetings with people from practice\, i.e. politicians\, journalists\, experts and activists\, who will introduce the participants to politics and public events based on their experience. \nIn addition to workshops and guest lectures\, the program is based on informal education. His methods are based on working in groups with an emphasis on individual initiative. So what you get from the Accumulator depends on how much you put into the training. An important part of the educational process is the sharing of experiences and reflection. \nIn informal education\, they learn by experiencing and trying new things\, which not only leads to new information\, but also to the acquisition of practical skills and thinking about values. It is not graded\, it does not know the role of the teacher\, it is voluntary and the participants are themselves responsible for what they learn. \nDeveloping the ability to work in a group is essential for the Accumulator. Although everyone takes away newly acquired skills and knowledge\, we believe that the ability to collaborate collectively is crucial when trying to change the world around us and when involving other people in future activities. \n  \n\nThis EGAT programme is organised by Green European Foundation with the support of Institute of Active Citizenship and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation. \n

SUMMARY:Deliberative democracy in tackling climate justice? (Požega)
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nDuring this lecture and discussion\, we will try to define some advantages and ambiguities of Deliberative Democracy when confronted with other participatory practices based on self-mobilisation\, as a leverage to discuss about “hybrid” practices and how they must be related to the pre-existing struggles in a territory\, and to the next-steps of decision making. A series of filed-of-contested-actions will emerge\, for opening space to the working groups for imagining solutions that can better relate mini-publics to maxi-publics\, and lay-and-expert knowledge. Leading questions will be formulated about what can we intend as justice (included epistemic justice)\, how can we tackle the asymmetries of information\, and avoiding to consider territories as a neutral ground on which a debate on a specific issues (for example: those related to energy) has to start from scratch. \n  \nProject background\nThe projects aims to explore the different levels and possibilities of citizen participation. Experiences from different countries are presented and discussed\, this summer school event being one oft them. \n  \nSpeakers\nGiovanni Allegretti\, Centre for Social Studies (CES) of the Coimbra University\, researcher on citizen participation in the management of territorial transformations and budgeting. \n  \nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 26th August 2023\, 10am-12am \nLocation: Osnovna skola Emilija Ostojic\, Knjaza Miloša 26\, Požega 31210\, Serbia \nLanguage:  The main languags of the event will be English. \n  \n\nThis EGAT programme is organised by Green European Foundation with the support of Institute of  Center for Green Politics and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:EGAT Latvia: 2023-2024 edition
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nThe youth organization “Protests” in cooperation with the Freedom and Solidarity Fund announces applications for the summer camp “Young Activists Academy” or JAA! It will be a great opportunity for young people to get inspired and prepare for active participation in civil society. \nThe camp will be held on 25-27 in August near Kandava\, Latvia. It is organized as a part of “European Green Activists Training – Latvia”. “Young Activists Academy” will be a 3-day camp\, during which we will introduce young people with little or no activism experience to various NGOs and movements\, such as the Green Movement\, as well as inspire them to actively participate in civil society. We will identify local problems and find ways how we can solve them and become heard at the political level as well. We will learn how the European Union and its institutions work and how you\, as an individual\, can be heard in it. We will identify  the threats to European democracy and how we can prevent them while also promoting an inclusive\, feminist and green society. \nProject “JAA” is organized by the “Freedom and Solidarity Fund” in cooperation with the youth organization “Protests”. The project is funded by the Green European Foundation through the “European Green Activists training” project. \n  \nWho can apply?\nWe are looking for young people between the ages of 15 and 30 who speak and understand the Latvian language. We will give preference to younger young people from the regions of Latvia and/or with less experience of activism\, but we invite everyone who is interested in the topics raised to apply. \n  \nPractical information\n  \nThe camp will be held in Latvian. \nThere is no fee to participate. The organizers will pay the travel and accommodation costs of the participants. \nThe application is open until August 14 at 23.59! SUMMARY:Geopolitics of a Post-Growth Europe: Rethinking Relations with the Global South?
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nRivalries between states or political entities for sovereignty over a territory or a resource are often enough to justify the development of (often commercial) armed forces and alliances. Geopolitics\, if it is to mean anything other than the analysis of this interplay of forces and influences\, would therefore affirm that no state would voluntarily reduce its economy at the risk of being overpowered by another one not willing to make this sacrifice. \nThis generality about international relations partly explains the expansion of empires throughout history\, and from this point of view\, the great European and industrial powers are doing nothing new by colonizing\, enslaving\, and establishing asymmetrical trade relations. \nWhat’s new\, however\, is that the intensity of the economic flows of industrial means of production is ravaging ecosystems and climatic balances. In other words\, the economic growth of the major powers (exploiting resources extending far beyond their sovereign territories) is unsustainable. \nIn response\, many intellectuals are striving to bring out a convincing macro-economic model of post-growth. These efforts are taking place when economic growth is slowing down\, or even stagnating\, and producing increasingly irreversible and lethal effects on the environment and people’s health. \nTheoretical models of post-growth postulate that it is possible to reduce the intensity of physical and economic flows while maintaining a satisfactory standard of living.  That is to say\, maintaining a “good standard of living” (with access for all to education\, healthcare\, leisure\, culture…) without using fossil fuels implies developing a large-scale renewable energy system\, which we know very well has a lower energy rate of return and requires large quantities of materials. \nIn any case\, the abandonment of fossil fuels and the development of a decarbonized\, non-growthiest economic model holds the seeds of new international relations and new balances of power. It aims to find solutions beyond naïve anti-militarism and convenient belief in green growth. Find out more about the project and its findings at geopoliticspostgrowth.eu.    \n\nPracticalities\nDate and Time: Friday\, July 7th (12:00 – 14:00 CEST)  \nLocation: Online\, via Zoom  \nLanguage: French  \nRegistration: This is a closed expert meeting.
