SUMMARY:Green Talks with GEF at the Green Days 2025 (Białowieża National Park)
DESCRIPTION:What does security mean in a time of war\, climate crisis\, and democratic backsliding? Join us at Green Talks with GEF during Green Days 2025 in Białowieża for a day of powerful discussions on defense\, democracy\, and environmental justice! \nAbout the event\nGreen Talks with GEF is a special contribution by the Green European Foundation (GEF) to Green Days 2025\, a Green summer school taking place this year in the iconic Białowieża National Park. Returning to the site of the very first Green Days held in 2015\, this edition marks the event’s 10-year anniversary\, bringing renewed focus on security\, democracy\, and environmental protection in a region facing ongoing geopolitical and social turbulence. \nStarting on 4 July 2025\, the event will consist of several panel discussions and workshops\, offering a space for reflection\, exchange\, and alliance-building. The Green Talks organized by GEF will gather Green politicians\, civil society actors\, and grassroots activists from across Central and Eastern Europe to explore what Green security means in today’s Europe. \nAt the core of the event is a belief that security must go beyond borders and weapons – it must also mean access to justice\, safety for the most vulnerable\, climate resilience\, and democratic freedoms. \nProject background\nThis year’s Green Talks reflect GEF’s long-term commitment to strategic engagement in Central and Eastern Europe\, and Poland in particular. With new political leadership since 2023 and Poland’s Greens in government\, the country is at a critical crossroads for its future direction. Yet even under a pro-European coalition\, hard questions persist: What kind of security do we want? Who defines it? And at what cost? \nThe symbolic location of Białowieża – a biodiversity hotspot straddling the Polish-Belarusian border and a crossing point for vulnerable migrants – underscores the complexity of these debates. GEF’s contribution will explore the intersections between defence\, environment\, civil liberties\, and the future of Europe through a Green lens\, asking how we can build safer\, fairer societies without reproducing oppressive models of “order.” \nProgramme:\nYou may find the GEF sponsored session down below\, but in case you’re interested in the full programme\, please click here. \nFriday 4.07: \nParallel sessions: \n10:00 – 11:30\nGreen vision of a safe city [PL/EN]\n \nConfirmed speakers: \n\nDirk Holemmans\, Ghent (Oikos\, video)\,\nVedran Horvat\, Zagreb (IPE/GEF\, video) \nMirosław Kaznowski (vice-burgmestr of Milanówek)\nKatarzyna Pilitowska (urban activist Kraków)\nDenis Gerard (Kooperatywa “Dobrze”)\nWaldemar Kamiński\, Warszawa-Białołęka (local councillor)\n\n\nWorkshop: the Climate Fresk [PL\, EN individual interpretation]\nConfirmed speaker:\nNathalie Bolgert \n\n\nPlenary debate:\n\n16:00 – 17:00\n\nGreen perspective on defence [PL/EN]\n \nConfirmed speakers: \n\nJoanna Kamińska (Committee Member\, European Green Party; Zieloni) \nElina Pinto (Committee Member\, European Green Party; Progresivie)\n\nModeration: Laurent Standaert (GEF) \nSaturday 5.07: \nParallel sessions: \n10:00 – 11:30\nSecurity and new technologies: facing AI and disinformation [PL/EN] \nConfirmed speakers:\n \n\nAnna Mierzyńska (OKO.press) lub/or Maia Mazurkiewicz (StratCom Alliance4Europe) (tbc.)\nTomasz Piątek (Reset Obywatelski)\nKlementyna Suchanow (UW)\nAlice Stollmeyer (Defend Democracy)\n\n\nPracticalities:\nDate and Time: 4 July 2025\nLocation: Białowieża National Park\, Poland\nLanguage:  English / Polish (simultaneous interpretation provided)\nRegistration: you may find the registration form to this link. SUMMARY:Making our economies fit for the people and the planet (Brussels)
DESCRIPTION:About the event:\nGeopolitical tensions and inequality between and within countries highlight the urgent need for a socially just transition that leaves no one behind. While the EU has taken significant steps through the EU Green Deal\, contradictions persist. Wellbeing is mentioned in EU documents\, but a comprehensive plan for making human and planetary wellbeing a priority in decision-making is still missing. \nAs we strive for an economy that aligns with human needs and planetary boundaries\, new economic approaches are emerging across academia\, civil society\, and institutions. The publication we are launching aims to address this challenge by developing ideas and political proposals to turn the EU’s ambition to “work towards an integrated framework for wellbeing” into action. \nOur political brief is the result of a one-year-long exchange within a  Knowledge Community of more than 60 experts\, mapping key challenges and offering recommendations to guide European institutions in making wellbeing a reality. Join us for the launch event to explore the findings and exchange ideas on pathways forward. View the agenda here. \n\nPracticalities\nDate and Time: 4 March 10:00-12:30 – the debate will be followed by a networking lunch\nLocation: Topos Parlement\, Brussels\, and online\nLanguage: English\nRegistration: please register now to join the event \n\nThis publication launch is organised by the Green European Foundation in collaboration with the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP) and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.

SUMMARY:About Degrowth and Geopolitics
DESCRIPTION:About the event\nStopping the climate and ecological crisis would be unlikely as long as our economy continues growing. In fact\, the degrowth movement\, which is rapidly gaining popularity among activists and scientists\, advocates for the deliberate scaling back of overproduction and overconsumption to bring the economy back into balance with the living world in a way that reduces inequality and improves human well-being.\nBut what would a farewell to economic growth mean for geopolitics? Can a European Union that is the first to enter the post-growth era still remain (or become) a global player? Will it be able to defend itself\, its allies\, democracy\, and the international rule of law against aggressive autocrats?\nThe transition to a post-growth society must be a democratic one. But that is far from obvious at a time when authoritarian regimes are invading or threatening their democratic neighbours. \nContext\nThe new transnational project Geopolitics of a post-growth Europe will explore the tensions between degrowth/post-growth and geopolitics. The project aims to ignite a conversation between critics of economic growth and progressive thinkers on foreign and security policy\, who now often operate in separate circuits. What are the points of contention? SUMMARY:'A European Just Transition for a Better World' Book presentation (Brussels)
DESCRIPTION:Context\nThis event is organized by the Green European Foundation with the support of Oikos Think Tank and Member of European Parliament Sara Matthieu\, to present the book on Just Transition\, published within the GEF project Just Transition. \nThis transnational project tackles the question of a Just Transition – transforming from an extractive to a regenerative economy in a just and equitable way to find the necessary support among the population. It seeks to show that the green family\, including GEF in its specific role\, is a leading actor in the development of futureproof politics and policies\, developed in a sensitive way that keeps in mind local specificities. \nAbout the event \nAs we argue in this book\, a just transition requires a new social contract. A new contract for Europe – this time a social–ecological contract – can only be written from a global perspective\, taking into account human rights and respect for nature worldwide. At the same time\, this major transformation will need to be very context specific. The differences between European regions are enormous\, not least in terms of income disparity between and within countries. So\, too\, are the financial\, innovative and structural capacities to shape and implement the transformative changes that are needed. From these perspectives\, we critically appreciate the European Commission’s Green Deal. \nThis and more will be discussed this evening. \nSpeakers\n\nSara Matthieu\, Member of European Parliament (Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance)\nDirk Holemans\, coordinator of Think Tank Oikos & Co-President of GEF\nJoaquin Nieto\, Former Director of the ILO Office for Spain\nAnne Chapman\, Green House Think Tank\nPhilippe Pochet\, General Director of the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI)\nModerator: Annabelle Van Nieuwenhuyse\n\nPracticalities:\nDate: 11th May \nTime: Doors open at 19:45h \nEvent starts at 20:00h and event ends at 21:30h\, including a drink \nLocation: Zilverenzaal/Foyer en dakterras\, Beursschouwburg Brussels (20 – 28 Rue Auguste Orts\, 1000 Brussels). \nRegistrations: Registrations are open << \n\nThis event is organised by the Green European Foundation with the support of Oikos think tank and Member of the European Parliament Sara Matthieu and with the financial support of the European Parliament to the Green European Foundation.
