The Feminists in the Climate Movement project aims to promote the growth of the green feminist movement across Europe.
About the project
Given Finland’s leading example in women’s leadership and political participation, GEF and its Finnish partner implemented a project in 2020 to support the growth of the green feminist movement across Europe. We wanted to highlight the connections between gender and climate justice, while empowering leaders and activists to become active in their own communities and across Europe.
Building on this successful pilot with our first generation of Feminist Climate Ambassadors, we are joined this year by three new partners from the UK, Belgium, and Poland to expand our training programme and also host relevant events and materials for the general public.
Feminist Climate Ambassadors
In February, we launched a call for our new group of Feminist Climate Ambassadors–activists, social media influencers, academics, politicians, and first timers in change making who share the goal of climate action through a feminist lens. Selected participants have been taking part in a transnational training programme. This comprises a participatory online training course, and a study trip to either the COP26 in Glasgow or Ecopolis, and the European Parliament in Brussels. The course aims to build safer spaces, where feminists can learn tactics, share their experiences, and network with other activists for a sustainable future. International experts provide our participants with training on capacity-building, movement-building, and campaign strategies, empowering them to launch their own projects, outreach, and initiatives.
Webinar Series and Summer Schools
Besides the closed training course, this project also aims to highlight the gendered aspects and impacts of the climate crisis and raise awareness to a broader audience. To that end, we are organising a webinar series touching on topics like gender and economics, gender mainstreaming in EU policies, and ecofeminism. Additionally, our Climate Feminist Summer School and session at the Polish Green Days provide further opportunities for interested participants to learn, discuss, and network with a particular eye on COP26.
Round Tables and Publications
Throughout the year, we will publish outputs and materials that highlight some of the project’s key lessons, including a booklet to be released in early 2022 on ecofeminism and its meaning today. This booklet is accompanied by a series of round tables, where interested participants will have the chance to discuss its content and give feedback and input of their own.
