About the Project

Mobility plays a fundamental role in people’s daily lives. The ease of movement not only favours the freedom to choose one’s place of residence and exercise the right to work, but it is also essential to access public services such as education and health, as well as leisure and enjoyment of free time. In short, mobility is a determining element of people’s wellbeing and quality of life.

Unequal access to and availability of mobility options have far-reaching implications, and this is all the more evident in 2022, as skyrocketing energy prices are putting pressure on all parts of society.

In Spain, the issues of mobility poverty and rural mobility connect closely to the underinvestment and depopulation characterising ‘empty Spain,’ but also affect transit and opportunities in mid-sized cities. At the same time, transport is one of the sectors most in need of radical change, if the EU is to deliver on its Green Deal and become climate neutral by 2050.

How can we make sure no one gets left behind in Europe’s push for greener, more sustainable mobility? And how can we safeguard a green and socially just mobility transition amid Europe’s current energy crisis? By putting a spotlight on these challenges while fostering a trans-European exchange on best practices, this project seeks to bring together relevant stakeholders from within Spain as well as other European countries, to discuss the challenges of rural mobility and mobility poverty, and the importance of addressing these as part of any green transition.

The project is based on the European Mobility Atlas, corresponding Spanish translation, and associated booklet, Present and Future of Mobility in Spain.
