Already in its fourth year, the transnational project of GEF around the Commons will focus in 2018 on urban spaces as driving force towards socio-ecological societies and as a hub of transformative policies.

Cities – a driving force to transform our societies
In Europe, cities are becoming a crucial transnational governance level. They are organising themselves in networks, working together in domains like renewable energy and urban economy. Especially in cities with a progressive government, ambitious strategy plans are introduced going beyond what is considered feasible at the national level. In recent years, we have seen some cities moving a step further, building specific structures that aim at building synergies between the public and the commons domain. These can be the prototype of transformative cities, being the driving force towards socio-ecological societies.
A positive, progressive vision for Europe
By bringing together political, civil and economic actors from progressive cities developing transformative policies across Europe, we create platforms that communicate a credible positive picture of Europe.
The project aims to provide an overview on potential transformative cities in different countries across Europe, as well as new civil and economic actors. Specific events will be organised by GEF with the support of its project partners that will feed into the debate and connect with the relevant actors as well as with a wider audience.
