SUMMARY:"Degrowth in the Parliaments" Panel Debate in Budapest (VIDEO Available)
DESCRIPTION:THEME:   \nCould we say that degrowth has entered parliamentary politics? Notably several party figures\, especially in Europe\, have raised the issue of degrowth in their parties and in the parliaments. \nFor this session\, we invited outstanding politicians from various European countries and political parties that\, in different ways\, have engaged with degrowth. First\, we asked them to share with the degrowth community the experiences they have had while attempting to promote degrowth within their parties and/or parliaments looking specifically at the opportunities and challenges they are facing.  Second\, we wanted to know what opportunities they see for the future and whether degrowth could gain momentum in public debates\, electoral campaigns and in the parliaments. Third\, we were eager to understand whether and how the degrowth community\, which includes grassroots activists\, practitioners and researchers\, could eventually support such processes from outside the parliaments. \nThe focus was on the national and European levels. On the one hand\, these levels are potentially very relevant to implement degrowth ideas in a systematic way\, but –on the other hand- they are also places were decision-making processes are complex\, the balance of powers not favorable\, and mainstream ideology very strong. \nSPEAKERS: \n\nPhilippe Lamberts\, Member of the European Parliament and Co-Spokeperson of the Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament\, member of Ecolo (Belgium);\nSabine Leidig\, former director of Attac Germany\, and Member of the Bundestag for Die Linke (Germany);\nFlorent Marcellesi\, Spokesperson of EQUO in the European Parliament (Spain);\nRebeka Szabó\, Vice-Mayor of the 14th district of Budapest – Zugló.\n\nMODERATORS: \n\nAurélie Maréchal\, Director of the Green European Foundation;\nFederico Demaria\, researcher at Research & Degrowth\, and ICTA UAB.\n\nVENUE: Corvinus University auditorium\, Budapest \nTIME: Friday\, the 2nd of September 2016\, 16h30 – 18h30 \nVIDEO: Watch this relevant debate in English or Hungarian.

SUMMARY:ECOPRO Debate at Budapest Degrowth Week: Work out of the box! (VIDEO Available)
DESCRIPTION:This event was a part of our ECOPRO project\, which this year has a special focus on work and its role in the post-growth society. \nTheme: \nThe world has reached the “Limits to Growth” – we are in the status of overshoot\, overuse\, overconsumption\, overpopulation. Our event on the 1st of September will be held 3 weeks after the Overshoot Day 2016 (the 8th of August)\, we will have used as much from nature as our planet can renew in the whole year. We need a new vision of a post-growth economy that fits again within the planetary boundaries while satisfying real societal needs\, guaranteeing well-being and a future for all. \nAmong many others\, we need to rethink our concept of WORK. Can we provide real\, meaningful\, added-value-generating jobs for all active-age men and women of the over 7 billion inhabitants of the Earth? If yes\, how? If not\, how shall we redefine and widen the meaning of WORK? \nWork is much more than spending time at a job – it includes running a household\, caring for children and elderly\, helping in the community and other forms of voluntary and political work. To grasp the diversity of work\, a green and feminist understanding of work\, questioning the gender and international division of labour\, is required. \nDoes work equal money? Equal work\, equal pay? Working for a living\, or a better life? What is the future of the work – and what is the work of the future? \nSpeakers: \nThis debate featured Bernadett Szél (Co-chair of Lehet Más a Politika\, Hungary)\, Beate Littig (Researcher at Institute for Advanced Studies\, University of Vienna\, Austria)\, Anne Snick (KU Leuven\, Belgium)\, Dirk Holemans (Coordinator and Editor at tink tank Oikos\, Belgium) and Jonathan Essex (Co-founder of the Green House think tank\, UK). \nVenue: Corvinus University of Budapest – Fôvám tér 8\, Budapest\, Hungary\, 1093 \nTime: 1st of September\, 16h00 – 19h00 \nVIDEO: Watch this debate in English or Hungarian.
