SUMMARY:Transition to Sustainability in Europe post-Brexit (Belfast)
DESCRIPTION:The event is a part of the ongoing transnational project “The potential impact of Brexit on the prospects for a Green transition in Europe” which attempts to support the much-needed public discussion of Brexit’s impact on individual Member States\, as well as on the EU level\, while exploring what this means for the Green movement’s endeavour in the transition to sustainability. \nDebate in Belfast\n“Transition to Sustainability in Europe post-Brexit” will be a one day event\, consisting out of critical debates in which prominent speakers will provide insights into potential impacts of Brexit in the context of Ireland and the EU. \nWhat are the implications and impacts of Brexit for the Green transformation of Europe? Are there progressive political potentials in the wake of the referendum decision in the UK last June and the ongoing political turmoil it has created? How should Greens and other progressives understand the rise of populism across Europe? And what are the likely impacts of Brexit for the island of Ireland? \nAll thematic sessions and confirmed speakers are listed below: \n1. DESCRIPTION:This event was a chance to continue the fruitful discussions about the topics featured in the book “Green Values\, Religion and Secularism”. With this publication\, the Green European Foundation aspires to foster the debate within the Greens towards a more coherent stance on the changing role of religion in European society. \nThe debate in Belfast was entitled “Green values and progressive politics: religion\, humanism and the ethical basis for political activism”. It featured Erica Meijers (Co-Editor\, Bureau de Helling) who will speak about “Marx\, Religion and Politics” and a discussion about the book\, with Nuala Ahern (Co-Editor\, Green Foundation Ireland)\, John Barry (Professor of Green Political Economy at Queen’s University Belfast) and Erica Meijers. \nThe debate was organised with the help of the Centre for Sustainability and Environmental Governance in Queen’s University Belfast. \nTIME AND LOCATION: Saturday the 9th of July\, between 11h00 and 16h00\, at Queen’s University Belfast.
